Porsche Panamericana (Do not confuse it with the Panamera...) 

The notion of the concept car really does represent a fascinating yet often downright crazy corner of car culture. Wheeled out for motor shows (if indeed wheels are present), any new styles or technologies are usually expressed through utterly radical designs where manufacturers can gauge public opinion under the premise of it being a one-off.

It’s not uncommon, however, for a popular concept to make production, albeit with often significant changes in order for it to comply with legislation. Porsche has a rich track record in this regard, with recent, notable examples including the 918, Taycan and 986 Boxster.However, there is another concept, hidden within the vaults of the Porsche Museum, which can lay a claim to being as successful as the aforementioned trio to realise production, for its impact on the company at large is just as profound. Based on a Porsche 911, its aesthetics offered a wild departure from the Neunelfer’s altogether more reserved profile and styling: the Porsche Panamericana drew on past success in competition on rough terrain.

And, though it never made production (nor was it ever intended to do so), elements of its design and engineering would continue to permeate throughout Porsche in the 911 lineup – and beyond – in the years prior to and after the new Millennium.Unveiled in 1989 at the Frankfurt Motor Show, the idea was to design a Carrera Panamericana-compatible vehicle, commissioned 35 years after the famous Mexican race was cancelled for good. With most of this notorious race taking place on rough terrain, the function of this one-of-one vehicle necessitated all-wheel-drive, a technology which Porsche had adopted just one year earlier with its first 911 Carrera 4.

It will therefore come as no surprise that it is the 964 Carrera 4’s all-wheel-drive system installed on the Panamericana, but what many will not know is the 964’s influence on the Panamericana goes further still. The base car itself is a 964 Carrera 4 Cabriolet, powered by the requisite factory M64 flat six engine, producing the usual 250hp, with power fed to all four wheels via a G64 five-speed gearbox.

Author’s Notes: A father’s day fic for Travis!! For the purposes of this story and an upcoming fic, the KC Chiefs ring ceremony happened about two weeks before this fic.

Please note: this content does mention fathers and father’s day. If this is triggering for you, please do not engage.

“Hey, I have something to tell you.” You whispered to a sleeping Travis, stroking his beard with your knuckles. Travis eyes fluttered open as he gave you a small smile. “Good morning”, you greeted him when you could see he was fully awake. Before you could get another word out, Alex came busting through the bedroom door. “Happy Daddy Day!” he yelled as he reached up for Travis to pull him into the bed. “Thank you Bubba!” Alex laid down on Travis’ chest, his Transformers action figure threatening to poke your husband in the eye. “Let’s not impale daddy on his own day.” You laughed, grabbing the toy from his hand, and placing it on the nightstand. “Come on Alex, let’s set up for Daddy downstairs. Give us 30 minutes T, we’ll call you when we’re ready.” You gave him a wink, heading out of the room. “Hey, wait. You said you had something you needed to tell me. Is everything okay?” You turned around, Travis’ eyes narrowed as he tried to gauge if something was wrong or not. You waived his concern off. “Yes, I promise. We’ll talk later.”

You were sitting around the table, breakfast mostly finished, Alex’s face covered in syrup. “So, we’ve got a few surprises for you, baby.” You turned to Travis, placing a kiss on his cheek. “This was more than enough, Y/N.” Travis rubbed his stomach, an indicator that he was more than full. “I guess I should return this, then?” You dangled a small gift bag in front of his face, Travis snatching it from you immediately. He pulled out a single car key, the Porsche logo glistening in the kitchen light. “Are you kidding me?” Travis looked to you as he took in his gift. “You have no idea what I had to do and who I had to call to get this for you, so I am dead serious”, you smiled. You all headed out to the front yard, a gorgeous vintage Porsche 964 sitting in the driveway. Travis had talked about nothing but this car since you started dating, and you had spent the last five years trying to track one down. You thought it wouldn’t take that long to locate a vehicle, but you ended up having to have it custom made with parts different cars. “This is incredible, baby!” You were excited to see your husband giddy like a child at Christmas. “Well, go sit in it!” Travis tried to get into the car, but Porsches aren’t exactly built for 6’5” football players. “I’m gonna make it work”, he gave you a thumbs up as he struggled to get into the car. He had to slide the seat back all the way, but soon he was behind the wheel. “Do you hear that engine, baby?” Travis exclaimed as he turned the engine over. “I love seeing you so happy, baby, but we have to get going if we’re going to make it to the next surprise.”

With Alex loaded into Travis’ new car, car seat included, you headed over to Arrowhead. “What do you have planned?” Travis asked giving you a sly look. The gate security team waved you into the stadium, past the usual player parking lot, directing you to drive onto the field. At the 50-yard line, you had a picnic set up just for the three of you with a perfect view of the jumbotron. Alex ran over to the blanket, you and Travis following behind hand in hand. “I can’t believe you did all of this, baby.” You kissed his knuckles. “You deserve all of this and more, Travis. You’re an amazing father and husband.” You watched ‘Remember the Titans’, one of Travis’ favorite childhood movies while enjoying a plethora of snacks. Halfway through, at the locker room dance scene, you looked over at Travis, who was wiping his eyes and sniffling. You pulled him into you, stroking his arm. You looked out at Alex who was running all over the field, football in hand. “This is probably my favorite day ever.” Travis confessed as he pulled you in for a kiss. “Even better than winning the super bowl, twice?” You asked with a cheeky smile. “It doesn’t even come close.”

At the end of the evening, You and Travis were getting ready for bed, both tired from an amazing Father’s Day. You were sitting in the bathroom at your vanity, taking off your makeup.  “Don’t think I forgot.” You looked over at Travis who was sitting on the bed. “What are you talking about?” He motioned for you to join him on the bed. You walked over, propping yourself up against the pillows at the headboard. “You said you had something to tell me.” Travis laid between your legs, his head on your stomach. You stroked his hair, scratching the back of his neck. “Oh yeah.” You took in a sharp breath. “Um, do you remember that amazing night after the ring ceremony?” Travis chuckled, the sound vibrating through you. “Yeah, I’ll never forget that.”

“Well, I was supposed to get my period like two days later, but I didn’t.” Travis looked up at you, silent. “Do you think-“, you got up before he could finish his sentence, walking into the bathroom. You emerged, a wad of toilet paper in your hands. “I took like five others just to be sure, but they were all positive.” You handed Travis the pregnancy test, his mouth agape at the news. “I know we wanted to wait a little longer after Alex, but I’m really excited, baby.” Travis was silent, still staring at the test in his hand. “Say something, babe, I’m kind of freaking out here.” Travis stood up, grabbing your face in his hands as you locked lips. “I know I said earlier that this was probably one of my favorite days ever, but now there is no question.”
