Playing Card Master Infodump
Ok gang, let's talk about playing cards again.
I’m going to try and get through this as systematically as possible but I will inevitably end up repeating myself due to the interconnected nature of the whole thing. Also I’ll try putting in subheadings to make it more readable. Let’s crack on!
Mameluk Playing Cards
I mentioned in my first post that European playing cards are based on ones from Mameluk Egypt, so let’s see if we can find some historical examples.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
From the Topkapu Sarayi Museum in Istanbul, an amazingly preserved set of Mameluk playing cards depicting the four suits
These cards are a perfect starting point. Dating from the 15th or 16th century, we’ll be seeing their influence percolate throughout playing card design throughout Europe. Here we see the suits that will directly influence Spanish and Italian playing cards: coins, cups, swords, and polo batons (a common sport of the ruling class). The court cards are King-Lieutenant-Second Lieutenant, the deck would’ve contained 52 cards (1-10 plus three court cards), and the illustrations are rich in detail and heavy with Islamic calligraphy. We will be tracing the evolution of European cards back to these ones as we go along, so it’s important to have an example of where it all started.
Spanish Patterns
The Islamic influence in southern Spain makes it the perfect entry point for playing cards to arrive in European material culture around the late 14th century. Spanish patterns follow the same suits as Mameluk ones (coins, cups, swords, and staffs), but a deck would contain only 48 cards, numbers 1-9 and three court cards. The court cards follow the Mameluk rankings but with a European twist, making it King-Knight-Page. Swords in Spanish cards are depicted straight, as opposed to Italian swords which are curved.
Tumblr media
Old Catalan / Spanish National Pattern, modern day
Tumblr media
Piacentine Pattern, found in Italy in Bourbon ruled Piacenza, shows remarked Spanish influence yet is the only Spanish pattern regularly sold today to feature reversible court cards
Some syncretism would occur with the intermediary Franco-Spanish pattern, as Spanish cards would arrive in France prior to the establishment of the French standard patterns. The use of Spanish suited cards continues in areas such as Brittany and the Vendee through the game of Aluette, however the original Franco-Spanish pattern is now extinct. These decks would also consist of 48 cards: 1-9 and three court cards, King-Knight-Page (Roi-Cavalier-Valet). The use of these patterns would directly influence French patterns to come
Tumblr media

French Patterns
French patterns would begin with Spanish ones around the 14th Century, and would mesh with Germanic ones to produce something we would start to recognise as the Anglo-American pattern. The French suits (Hearts, Clovers (Clubs), Tiles (Diamonds), and Pikes (Spades)) are based on the Germanic suits (Hearts, Acorns, Bells, and Leaves respectively), however for a brief period a suit of Crescents was used instead of Tiles.
Tumblr media

An example of the short-lived Crescents suit, Lyon, late 15th century
The majority of Italian, Spanish, and Germanic patterns follow the Mameluk tradition of all male court cards, which causes French patterns to stand out with the inclusion of Queens in place of the Knights. Queens had appeared in decks in both Italy and Germany in the 15th century, but had mostly been dropped in non-tarot decks. The inclusion of Queens, however, continued in France where their inclusion replaced the Cavalier (Knight) with the Dame (Queen). The naming convention of Dame for Queen will also be seen in Germanic patterns.
The Paris pattern, as distinct from Anglo-American or Hamburg patterns (about which more anon), is unique in that each of the court cards reference a historical or biblical figure, and are so named even to this day in the portrait officiel pattern (a deck of 32 cards, however sometimes printed in 52-card deck variants). As an example, the Kings of the Paris pattern refer to Charlemagne (Hearts), Alexander the Great (Clovers), Julius Caesar (Tiles), and King David (Pikes). The use of Julius Caesar as the historical figure associated with the King of Tiles, and most known in the past by his depiction on Roman coins in profile, might explain why in the later Anglo-American pattern the King of Diamonds is the only King to be depicted standing in profile.
Belgian pattern cards are similar to Paris (portrait officiel) decks and likewise come in 32-card and 52 card variants.
Germanic patterns
The closest pattern to connect Germanic decks to French ones is the Hamburg pattern, which would directly influence the North German or Berlin pattern. Taking the suits that we know today (hearts, clubs, diamonds, spades) and beginning production in the early 19th century, a clear link to the Paris (portraits officiel) pattern is shown in the depiction of the King of Spades holding the Harp of King David, a reference to the association of King David with the suit of Pikes (Spades) in the Paris pattern, and the laurel wreath under the crown of the King of Diamonds (Julius Caesar, King of Tiles). Germanic patterns closely associated with the French patterns name the court cards as King-Lady-Farmer (König-Dame-Bauer)
Tumblr media
The Kings from the North German pattern showing links to the Paris (portrait officiel) pattern conventions
Germanic pattern playing cards, however also predate the suits used in French patterns and had a direct influence on them. The Germanic suits of Hearts, Acorns, Bells, and Leaves became standard around 1450, where upon it would directly influence the French suits and finally the modern Anglo-American system of Hearts, Clubs, Diamonds, and Spades. Many packs using this system contain only 32 or 36 cards, as is appropriate for the kinds of games played in the areas where they are common, and the court cards are typical established as King-Over-Under (König-Ober Knabe-Unter Knabe) in the Mameluk style of a leader and two ranks of soldier. The Ace in Germanic suits is really, and was referred to in the past as, a Deuce (Daus in German), which is why the Ace in these decks, the highest card in many regional games, actually exhibits two suit symbols rather than one. In the William Tell pattern deck, the four Deuces represent the four seasons of the year, however this is not typical across Germanic decks, which typically depicted a boar or sow in older decks, a tradition that continues today only on the Deuce of Bells.

Italian patterns
Italian patterns closely resemble Mameluk and Spanish patterns, and it is in Italy where the polo baton of the Mameluk deck was replaced with a staff, or baton or club, for an area where polo was not well known or played.
Tumblr media

In South Tyrol, a region acquired by Italy at the First World War, the Germanic Salzburg pattern is still used with Italian translations known as the Salisburghesi pattern.
It was in Italy that the first tarot decks were produced, where additional ‚trumps‘, known in Italian as trinofi, were added for more advanced card games. Typical to Northern Italy in the Italian suits, tarot cards for games such as Tarrochi, Tarock, and Scarto spread to France and Germanic areas whereupon there was further alterations made.
Tarot patterns
Tarot cards were never originally intended for Cartomancy, such associations came later in the 18th and 19th centuries, however there is a distinct split between Franco-Italian patterns and Germanic ones. A rare Italian deck serving as a progenitor of sorts to later 78-card tarot decks that now lost, was described in a letter from Milan in 1449 and supposedly consisted of a deck of 60 cards with only the four Kings as court cards, sixteen trump cards, and the suits as birds rather than any surviving system. Early 78-card decks replaced the court cards with classical figures and made the trump cards those of classical deities. Many of these early decks survive only as incomplete examples, damaged printing sheets, or in descriptions alone.
The Tarot of Marseilles is likely the first 78-card tarot deck to resemble the one we know today. The suits follow the Italian and Spanish patterns, synthesises the French and Spanish-Italian-Mameluk courts cards to give four in each suit: King-Queen-Knight-Page. The Major Arcana, or the trumps when ranked by value, are similar to modern tarot decks, albeit with some notable differences: the Magician is replaced by Le Bateleur (The Juggler), the High Priestess by Le Pances (The Popess, likely a reference to the myth of Pope Joan), and the Hierophant with Le Pape (The Pope). In Swiss tarot decks, the High Priestess is replaced by the classical deity Juno, and the Hierophant with Jupiter, in the style of the older historical Tarot de Besançon pattern.
Germanic tarot cards, however, are entirely different in nature. Trump cards in the Bourgeois Tarot pattern, with its sub-pattern the Tarot Nouveau, depict scenes rather than figures, and are split into groups of four (such as the times of day and the four elements), with the final three depicting Games (trump 20), the Collective (trump 21), and the Individual (trump 1)
Tumblr media
Example Tarot Nouveau trumps, reversible but each scene depicting the card’s meaning
Tumblr media
The trumps of the Industrie und Glück pattern, a standard tarot deck for games in the Germanic regions that uses the French suit system for value and court cards
One variation of tarot decks, known as Animal Tarot patterns, uses both real and fictional animals for the trump cards, and continues today only in the south German Adler Cego pattern
The End?
Honestly, this is all I have energy for at the moment, but I wanted to show just a hint of the huge variety of different playing card designs throughout the centuries and their effect on the modern decks of today. There is so much more I’d like to get into, so if you have some questions please please please ask!

Significance & History Of Color In Rummy & Playing Card - khelplayrummy.com
Rummy is one of those card games that is famous all over the world and a favourite of crores of people, irrespective of their religion and color. Rummy has been played in India since centuries and was popular among Indians even when we had TV sets of black and white colour. Rummy game develops our skills as we play using the deck of 52 cards in online rummy. Speaking of cards, which colour cards do you see whenever you play rummy? Colour of red and black. Have you wondered why are there only 2 color? Rummy cash game, just like other playing card games, has been played using these 52 cards, whose primary colours are red and black. Let us know more about them.
The History of Playing Cards
The earliest documented cards can be traced back to the year 868 AD in the Tang Dynasty of China. Princess Tongchang used to play card games using cards made of leaves of green color. Rummy or other card games, this is still unknown, but the research is backed by a lot of manuscripts and books. It is believed that the printing of playing cards began in the reign of the Tang Dynasty, as with time, the leaves were replaced by wooden blocks and paper of white color. Rummy game and other card games were being played in Asia by the 11th century as the playing cards became popular by then.
These playing cards were gradually introduced in Egypt and the Arabs introduced them in Europe where they became extremely popular in the 14th century. Because of different cultures, the different European countries made significant changes to the design of playing cards and their colour. Rummy and other games were played with a fresh perspective and interest by this time. But still, the basic deck of cards used to resemble the ‘mamluk deck’ that was popular in Egypt. It had 4 different suits, they were polo sticks, cups, swords, and coins of various color. Rummy and other card games were played using these cards.
These playing cards reached Germany and Italy by the 13th century. The traditional Latin suits were replaced by bells, leaves, hearts, and acorns of some color. Rummy free online game of today’s times will not have such cards. In the year 1480, a healthy combination of German & Latin suit pictures, formed the French suits of tiles, hearts, pikes, and clovers, of some color. Rummy app of not even one platform will have cards like these. But out of all the variations of cards, the ones developed by the French became highly popular.
The modern day cards are of French suits, derived from the German suits, and they are the usual ones you see – Spades, Diamonds, Clubs, and Hearts. The card decks of German, Latin, and Mamluk had 3 male cards as the Face cards, but the French card deck dropped the Knight card and replaced it with a female card, the Queen card painted with multiple color. Rummy app UI of KhelPlay Rummy vividly depicts this.
Meet Today’s Deck of Cards
As we just read that the modern deck of cards are a derivative of the French cards. They consist of 52 cards in total, plus most of them have 1 or 2 Printed Jokers. These 52 cards are divided into 4 suits: Spades, Diamonds, Hearts, and Clubs. Out of these, Diamonds and Hearts are red in color, and Spades and Clubs are black in color. Rummy, Poker, Teen Patti, Solitaire, etc. many such card games are played using these 52 cards. These 4 suits each have 13 cards, they are: Ace, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, Jack, Queen, and King.
This means, 26 cards are red in color, and 26 cards are black in colour. Rummy online cash gaming happens with these same 52 cards. Out of the 13 cards of each suit, 3 are face cards: Jack, Queen, and King. These cards, besides being in their usual black or red in colour (rummy app open karke ek game khelke dekhna) are also in multiple colours. There are 2 faces in the opposite direction (up-down) of these 3 people: Jack, Queen, and King. They are created in various colour. In rummy gaming, these face cards carry 10 points each.
Color in Rummy
You might be wondering, what is the relation between colours and the game of rummy? It is as close as the words ‘colorrummy’ are! If you have played Indian Rummy, you will know that you have to make quick decisions in your turn to discard a card, it varies from 10 to 30 seconds, but even in this time, you can make mistakes. Players get confused between colours, that’s because 2 suits (spades & clubs) are black in color, and 2 suits (hearts & diamonds) are red in color. In rummy app, while playing at the table, the most crucial thing is to sort your cards properly, otherwise, you may end up discarding a 5 of hearts instead of a 5 of diamonds, because both are red in color! In rummy cash game, this is a disaster that can make you lose real cash.
You should be aware of this while playing rummy. Colour of red and black are contrasting enough to identify easily, but because of 2 suits each of one colour, in rummy online, you have to be careful while discarding. One trick is to group cards of alternate colour in rummy online game. For example, you can group spades, then diamonds, then clubs, and finally the hearts of red color in rummy online.
Besides these, the colour in rummy app also plays a significant role in hooking players to play. Dark red is the prominent color in rummy app of KhelPlay Rummy, and it is the favourite colour of most people. Whereas, some other rummy platforms have green, blue, white, etc. as the main colour in rummy app. Which one is your preferable rummy colour?
Decks of Four Colours!
Yes, this was true once! There were decks of four different colour in rummy game and others. This was one of the solutions to the confusion of the above ‘color in rummy’. J. Y. Humphreys created the first ever four-coloured deck in 1819 in the USA. These decks greatly helped players in minimizing confusion because of 2 suits of the same color in rummy, preventing players from picking or discarding cards of wrong suits.
These decks were more commonly known as the ‘No-Revoke Decks’. They were made to be specially used in Trick-taking games like Whist, Bridge, Jass, etc. They were also used to play rummy. Color of green replaced black in clubs, and the colour of blue replaced red in diamonds. This was just one example of four-coloured decks. There were many different combinations of color. In Rummy and other trick-based games, these decks were extensively used in the 1900s.
Why Red & Black colour in Rummy, why no other colours?
You must be thinking now: wow! Four-coloured decks were awesome, problem solved, but why the world reverted back to the usual two color? Rummy online gaming would have been easier without all the confusion. But the reasons will be explained now. Modern day cards are inked in red and black color (for rummy game and other games) because the red and black inks were easily available, that too at the cheapest rate. On the contrary, it wasn’t easy to procure the inks of blue and green colour. In rummy and other games, the old style of 2 colours returned.
The red ink was prepared using linseed oil and cinnabar, whereas the black ink was formed when linseed oil was mixed with soot, it was that easy to make these 2 color for rummy and other card games. Both these inks didn’t fade away when exposed to sunlight and also, they were extremely durable. The red colour was used because it looked contrasting and prominent on a paper of white colour (rummy app of Khel Play Rummy is also red in colour if you see).
On the other hand, the copper compounds needed to make the green and blue inks were really expensive at that time and they were also not oil soluble to form the colour for rummy and other card games. According to some theories, the colors red and black symbolized the day and night respectively.
Conclusion
Let the cards be made up of whichever colour; rummy online, poker, bridge, Teen Patti, etc. card games will be played with equal enthusiasm all over the world. Of these, the rummy game truly fills our life with much more than just 2 color. Rummy app of KhelPlay Rummy is made exactly for that, dear friends. Fill your life with hundreds of color, in rummy free online game, play lots of cash games and Tournaments, and win lots of real cash and other prizes. Online rummy thrills us, entertains us, develops our skills, and makes our life full of color. Rummy login of KhelPlay Rummy, if you haven’t done it yet, then download the app, make an account and make your life more colourful, by playing with cards of just two colours: red and black.

Weekend Update, Admittedly a Bit Late
I am in a mood today, so forgive me for just brain dumping.  Hoping it will improve my outlook.
Well, we put off both sushi-making and counter-refinishing this weekend because Saturday was going to be (and was) so, so nice.  We did get sushi from Q-Mart, which satisifed me just fine.
We were on a hunt for dwarf cherry trees, but the overall pickings for fruit trees of any kind are pathetic right now. I suspect everyone is gussying up their back yards right now, hence the shortage.  Failing that, I’ve since ordered something called a “columnar apple tree”, which we should be able to grow in pots in the back.  We ordered one so far, and will get another -- of a slightly different variety -- once they’re back in stock, so they’ll be able to cross-pollinate.
Picked up some additional goodies for the garden, and filled up those five garden bags I got off Amazon.  Really liking those, I think next year I’ll get more of those instead of the buckets.
So right now we’re growing the following: Regular tomatoes (x2) Candyland tomatoes Red bell peppers (x2) Eggplant (x3) Zucchini Cucumber Pinto beans Corn Jalapenos Tobasco peppers Watermelon Acorn squash Onions (still not sure what kind, but I guess we’ll find out!) Parsley, Oregano, Basil and Catnip Sweet mint and chocolate mint Lavender Citronella Strawberries Plus the resident blackberries, raspberries and blueberries.
We still have the fig tree, and it still appears to be alive, but it’s in an extended dormancy.  It would be nice if it leafed out and sprang back, but we really don’t know what’s up with it.
Tumblr media
The new garden bench arrived as well, so while Marc was assembling it I scrubbed the old one back to a nice bright white and we brought it over to my Mom’s, along with a big hanging flower basket for the front.  This weekend we’re going to go over and install some white lattice around the front porch, and I’m going to power-wash the siding. You can see a certain pride of home ownership in them now, which feels nice.  Jim wanted more flower baskets because a neighbor across the street had some out, and he needed to show them up.  Her veggies and herbs appear to be doing pretty well, too.
Their freezer came in yesterday!  We brought it over and got it all set up, so some time this week I’ll probably take my Mom to BJs to stock up on Stouffer’s meals, which she is already excited about.  She’s really keen to use it, which makes me happy.  She’s also going to go through all her Christmas ornaments and sort out a smaller quantity to keep so that we can sell the rest.  I actually plan on doing the same with ours tonight.  More room in the attic, less to fuss with at Christmas.
Jim is not walking very well, in part because he’s 86 and in part because he absolutely refuses to do any kind of exercises or physical therapy that would actually help him regain some mobility.  He’s finally conceded to a transport chair, so I spent quite a bit of time researching and pricing them.  They sell basic ones at Walmart for like $150, but he’s 6′2″ and with long legs, so most anything “regular” doesn’t fit him.  It also has to be collapsible and light enough for a 5′1″ woman (that’s me) to get it into and out of her trunk without too much hassle.
I (think I) finally found one that will fit him comfortably, however, and now it’s on order.
With any luck he’ll like it more than he hates it, and we’ll be able to take him to the lake and for little outings.  At the worst he’ll despite it but he’ll suck it up for short trips to the doctor.
The greenhouse arrived today as well, and Marc has snuck off to start the assembly ahead of some expected wind and rain.  We’re also waiting on the delivery of a small fountain / water spout for the front pond, as the original is really at the end of its lifespan.
Oh, that’s the other thing!  While we were out looking for cherry trees we found a “bird feeding station” at one of the nurseries.  They’re normally between $400 - $500 online, but this one was just $220, and I talked them down to $200.
Basically it’s an iron arbor with some miscellaneous bits and pieces to hold bird feeders.  Instead we installed it in the back, straddling two of the blackberry beds, and are using it to hang any veggies that we don’t have room for on the ground (as well as the catnip, to keep it from getting loved to death.)
Tumblr media
The berries are coming along nicely, in a bit of a bid for who wants to ripen first.  Marc helped me assemble some home-made bird scares out of CDs, tin-foil and laminated brightly-colored paper with drawn-on eyes.  I hope it works, although once things start ripening I may need to keep a closer eye on things.  I am highly suspicious of birds.
Just the same, I cleaned out two of our old feeders, bought two more, and we filled them and hung them out front for the birds to enjoy.  Maybe if we keep them fat on seed they won’t fuss around in the back (although I suspect Fidget has a lot to do with that as well.)
It’s been really nice to see the garden growing... little plants I had doubts about are getting tall and plucky.  They love to grow.  Sometimes we just like to walk around and check on everything, identifying the new bugs that are showing up to pollinate or just live in this tiny ecosystem we made.  My cityboy husband marvels on the regular how much he’s learned, and how much he loves the garden, its maintenance and care.
I have been having some... health frustrations for the past year and change.  They’re not serious, that I know of, but they have been greatly affecting my sense of self and well-being, and as time goes on and they don’t resolve it’s just getting more and more stressed out.  The only medical solution may be worse than the problem itself, so I’ve spent a lot of time today trying to get hold of a doctor or counselor or someone who can point me in the right direction, and won’t just keep giving the same trite advice without actually running tests on me. I almost bit the bullet and took the damn pill they were recommending, but upon calling the pharmacy discovered it’s almost $120 a month.  For something that 1) May not work and 2) May actually make me feel worse. Yay.
So no.
I have a virtual visit with an endocrinologist on the 22nd, so we’ll see how that goes.  I’m tired of feeling like I’m living in someone else’s body, and that everyone’s response is basically to shrug and say, “Oh well, guess you should just suck it up forever.”
Today I made some banana applesauce muffins, and they were good.
Tumblr media
Other than that, everything seems to be well.  Cats are fat and obnoxious and happy.  So are we, I suppose!

Before MSA + 1: Hamster
Arthur had been eating his breakfast when Uncle Lance looked over his newspaper at Arthur and said, “I think it’s time for you to get a pet.”
Arthur stopped eating and blinked at Lance in surprise.  “What?”  He’d never asked for a pet.  Arthur didn’t even think he’d expressed any interest in a pet.  Did he even give off the impression of that he’d be able to take care of a pet?  “Why?”
“You like your friend’s dog,” answered Uncle Lance.  “And having a pet will help you become more responsible.”
Personally, Arthur thought he was already more responsible than normal for his age.  He wasn’t sure how he compared to an adult. “I’m not sure I’m ready for a dog.”
“Yeah, not a good idea,” agreed Lance.
Arthur blinked. “So…”  If Uncle Lance agreed Arthur wasn’t ready for a dog, then he probably wouldn’t consider a cat either.  “So what then?”
“Maybe a bird or a hamster.”
Arthur blinked. “I don’t really get why people keep rodents as pets.  Chickens are pretty useful, but I don’t think that’s what you’re talking about.”
Oh, did Uncle Lance’s face just twitched?  It was hard to tell because of all the hair, but it sure looked like Arthur had said something that affected Lance.  “We’re going to the animal shelter after school.”
Arthur felt weirdly conflicted.
“And then he said we’d be going to the animal shelter after school,” finished Arthur. “I’m…kind of confused.  I kind of thought pets were something kids ask for, but Uncle Lance is kind of forcing this on me.”
“Why wouldn’t you want a cute, fluffy pet?” asked Sydney.  “I ask Mom and Dad for a pet every year, but they always say that they don’t want to destroy the house.”  She paused.  “I don’t think it would be that bad…”
“I’d kind of like a pet too,” agreed Lewis.  “But, well, it sounds like most animals would be pretty stressed out by living in a haunted house, and I don’t want to do that to ‘em.”
“Plus you don’t have enough room for an alpaca,” added Sydney.
Arthur blinked. “A what?”
Lewis perked up. “Oh, do you know what a llama is?” Arthur nodded.  “An alpaca is a friendly, fluffier llama.  My parents took Sydney and me to a farm when we were little kids, and it was so much fun!”
Sydney snickered. “We had to drag him away.  He wanted to stay with the alpacas.”
“Well, I doubt Uncle Lance will be getting me an alpaca,” said Arthur.
Lewis nodded. “Yeah, you have to get them in pairs because they can die from loneliness.”
…Arthur made a note to ask if that was something that he would need to worry about with whatever he ended up with.
“So can we come with you and look at the puppies?” asked Sydney.
Arthur thought for a minute.  “Maybe. You’d have to ask your parents and Uncle Lance.”
Several hours later:
“I don’t see any reason why you couldn’t as long as Mr. Kingsmen says it’s all right,” said Frigg.
Sydney Sr. nodded. “Ditto.”
Arthur stared. “Why are you wearing a skirt?” asked Arthur.
“Hey, if girls can wear pants whenever they want, then I can wear a dress whenever I want,” answered Sydney Sr.
Arthur didn’t know how to reply to that so he just accepted the sympathetic shoulder pats from Lewis and Sydney Jr.
Sydney Sr’s choice in clothing got a surprised double take from Uncle Lance but no comments. He turned to Arthur.  “Ready to go?”
“Yeah, could Lewis and Sydney come with us?”
Lance raised an eyebrow but shrugged.  “I guess. Not much is gonna be going on though.”
“That’s okay,” said Lewis.
“I wanna see the kitties!” added Sydney.
“Not cats this time,” said Lance.  “The biggest thing he’s getting is a guinea pig.”
“…Those are cute too,” Sydney decided.
And they all piled into Lance’s truck and started off.  It was a bit of a tight fit, but the kids (and Lance but no one was going to say that out loud) were small enough to make that work.
They did not end up at a pet store.  This was simply because Lance didn’t want any of the larger animals deciding they wanted to go home with Arthur…or Arthur deciding he wanted a larger animal.  The latter didn’t seem likely, but Lance didn’t think he’d be able to say no.
Instead, they wound up at a normal looking house.  The kids were visibly confused.  “It’s a private rescue,” explained Lance.  One that specialized in rodents in particular.  If Arthur didn’t see anything he liked, Lance had the address of a bird rescue to try next.
“Do we just go in?” asked Sydney.
“They’re expecting us, but knock first.”
Perhaps not surprisingly, Sydney was the one who ran up to the door and knocked at it.  It was opened by a plump, late-middle aged woman. “Yes?”
“Hi!  I’m Sydney!  My friend Arthur’s here to get a new fluffy friend!”
By that time the guys had caught up to her.  The woman smiled.  “Oh, then you must be Mr. Kingsman.”
Lance nodded. “Yup.  This is Arthur.”  Arthur waved. “And his other friend, Lewis.”
Lewis smiled.  “Hello, Miss.”
She smiled back. “Hello to you too.”  She moved aside so they could enter the house.
The first thing they noticed was a pen full of sawdust and guinea pigs.  There were also tubes for hamsters to run through.  Sydney let out a squeal and ran over to the guinea pigs, startling a few of them.  “Piggies!” Lewis and Arthur followed more calmly.
“They are adorable,” agreed the woman.  “But they’re extremely social so you’d have to adopt at least two.”
Lewis grinned. “Like alpacas.”
“Right.”
“I probably should start with only one pet,” commented Arthur.  So no guinea pigs then.  “So, I guess we look around a bit…”
There were some rabbits, some gerbils, a couple of chinchillas, several hamsters, a squirrel, and a sugar glider.
“Where’d the squirrel came from?” asked Sydney.
“Oh, an older man rescued her as a baby and raised her.  He died not too long ago, and she doesn’t know how to take care of herself in the wild,” she explained.
“…Can I feed her acorns?”
“She prefers pinecones.”
Arthur just stared at all the animals that had were in enclosures or wandering around.  So…how was he supposed to do this?  Did he just choose one?  He experimentally poked a gerbil that was chewing on a pellet.
The gerbil didn’t react.  Arthur had to admit it was kind of boring.  He should probably stick to a pet that he had some interest in.
…Arthur had no idea how to do this.  He thought about the interactions between Vivi and Ben.  He should look for something like that?  But these were hamsters.  Could they even form the same type of bond with a human as a dog?
Arthur felt something hit his foot.  He looked down and saw a hamster ball containing a tiny hamster.  He picked up the ball.  “Is this a baby?”
She shook her head. “It’s a dwarf hamster.  They’re smaller than the other breeds.”
Lewis snickered and playfully elbowed Sydney.  “That sounds familiar.”  Sydney’s response was to jump on him.  The woman ignored the rough housing in favor of showing Arthur how to open the hamster ball.
Arthur studied the hamster as it scurried around his cupped hands.  He quickly put it on the table, where it scurried about.  When he put his hand on the table, the little hamster started scurrying back and forth over it.
“Aw…she likes you,” said the woman.
Arthur blinked. “Really?”  He pet the top of the hamster’s head.  She nuzzled into his hand.  “I think…you’re right.”
And that was how Arthur found himself with a hamster in a cage with several pet supplies.
“Cute…” cooed Lewis.
“What ‘cha gonna call her?” asked Sydney.
“Um…”  Arthur watched the tiny hamster running on her wheel. It was a pretty small cage.  He should use his saved up allowance to get her a hamster ball and some tubing.  “My family seems to have a habit of using Arthurian names…”  He wasn’t sure he wanted to name his pet after one of the people he’d left behind.  “I’m not sure I want to use that sort of name.”
“What about Shakespeare?” asked Sydney.
“I don’t know any girl names from that except for Juliet,” said Arthur.  Not the best option.
“What about Puck?” suggested Lewis.
“What does hockey have to do with it?” asked Arthur.
“No, it’s a character from ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’,” explained Lewis.
“But she’s the size of a hockey puck,” added Sydney.  “So she is sort of like one.”
“Definitely shouldn’t try using her like one though,” said Lewis.
Sydney winced. “Yeah, that would be awful.”
Arthur shuddered at the mental image.  “No, no, no pucks.”
“Maybe Cadence?” suggested Sydney.  “I have no idea if that’s Camelot or Shakespeare or what, but it sounds fancy.”
“Fancy counts I guess,” said Arthur.  “Sure, let’s go with that.”  He stuck a few fingers into the cage.  “What do you think?”  Cadence the hamster sniffed at his fingers for a moment before going back to running on her wheel.  “Cadence it is.”
They watched Cadence for a few more moments.
“So, how are we going to introduce Cadence to Vivi and Ben?” asked Sydney.
“…Do dogs eat rodents or is that just cats?” asked Arthur.
“They have sharp teeth,” admitted Lewis.  “So I guess they might.”
“Ben’s pretty tame though,” said Sydney.  “Have you ever seen him act threatening at all?  I’m not sure I’ve ever seen him bare his teeth or growl.”
Ben was pretty well behaved.  Maybe it would be okay to introduce him and Vivi to a small dwarf hamster.
Vivi and Ben stared at the small hamster currently running around the dojo in a hamster ball. “She’s adorable,” said Vivi.
“Yeah, it kind of makes me want one,” agreed Lewis.  “I think my parents would want to wait until Belle’s a bit older though.”
“I’m not sure I’ll ever be responsible enough to take care of another living being,” said Sydney.
“Does that include children?” asked Arthur.
Sydney paused. “That is a good question.”  Her eyes averted, and she giggled.  “Heh, Ben.”
Ben was batting at Cadence’s hamster ball.  “Is that okay?” asked Arthur.
“Um…probably. Ben sometimes chases squirrels, but this doesn’t look like that,” said Vivi.  Ben decided to lay down with the ball and Cadence between his front paws. “See?  He’s making himself smaller so he looks less intimidating to Cadence.”
“Does Ben have any animal friends?” asked Lewis.
Vivi frowned. “Actually, for some reason he seems to scare most other dogs.  No idea why.”
Ben winced because he knew why other dogs didn’t like him.  Along with most animals.  Including Cadence, who seemed rather nervous about her current position.  He wasn’t exactly sure how to calm her down though. Hamsters were…simple.
“I think he’s scaring her,” said Arthur.  He immediately walked over, picked up the ball, and took a few steps away from Ben. “Hold on a sec.”  He opened the ball and let Cadence tumble into his jacket pocket.  She poked her head and front paws out.
“That’s so cute!” gushed Vivi even as she moved to comfort Ben.  “How’d you teach her to do that?”
“I felt kind of guilty I couldn’t spend as much time with her, and I thought if holding her was good enough…” Arthur trailed off.  “I’m not sure how to keep her from making a mess.”
“Hamster diapers!” proclaimed Sydney.
“I’m not sure that’s a thing,” said Lewis.
Arthur’s head was bowed in thought.  “But maybe I could make something like that…”
“How would that work?” asked Lewis.
“Well, it would need an impermeable outer layer and some sort of absorbent layer.  But Cadence wouldn’t wear it unless it was comfortable so it would need some cloth.  Or maybe I could make it like a pocket liner…” muttered Arthur.
“Wow, you’re serious about that,” said Vivi.
Arthur blinked. “Er…Should I not be?”
“I like the idea,” said Lewis.  “You can bring your cute pets with you everywhere without getting your shirts dirty.”
Sydney nodded. “There’s diapers for birds!” Everyone gave her an odd look. “What?  I saw it on TV once.”
“Sydney…”
“It wasn’t a cartoon.”
“Ah.  Nevermind then.”
Arthur, Vivi, and Mystery felt like they were missing something.

Super Mario Maker 2 Wishlist
With the recent announcement of Super Mario Maker 2 at the February Nintendo Direct, I was ecstatic. In just a couple short minutes, it showcased a bunch of hotly requested features: slopes, more backgrounds, and even hints of multiplayer. Considering that the absence of slopes and meaningful background variety are two of my biggest complaints with the first game, it's fairly obvious how much that interested me.
And yet we can still go further.
Following is a series of things I'd like Super Mario Maker 2 to add that haven't been announced already.
More backgrounds. Super Mario Maker's largest problem by far was how levels were pigeonholed into one of six fairly generic themes: ground, underground, underwater, castle, airship, and ghost house. We already have four new backgrounds announced (desert, jungle, ice, space), and that's a good start. Still, there are problems; any kind of lava level gets forced into the castle theme, and there's no good rocky terrain that isn't also underground. So to balance that out, and also to add even more variety, I feel volcano, mountain, cloud, and beach backgrounds would be good additions.
Longer/removable time limit. In Super Mario Maker, the longest (and default) time limit is 500 seconds, or 8m20s. This is already fairly long, but it still hampers the creation of exploration-based levels and creates unnecessary stress on players. Setting a larger time limit can better inform players they're about to go into a very long level, and removing it outright can convey the idea that time taken is irrelevant in the level they're about to play. This would also help metroidvania-style levels thrive, whereas the presence of a time limit makes them harder to create and harder still to play.
More sublevels. Super Mario Maker only offers two sublevels (separate areas of a level) per 'main' level, which translates to only having two themes and two canvases within which to build your level. While the two themes problem is, again, a variety issue (noticing a trend yet?), the two canvases problem is much more pressing. Creating, say, a level with multiple segments in the same sublevel requires either absurd amounts of padding, reducing your overall building space, or having unsightly views of both sides of the barrier. If any of you remember my Super Mario Maker creations, you probably most remember Infiltration, a giant level that I had to very hackily implement to get it to fit within SMM limitations. One such limitation was sacrificing any kind of meaningful vertical progression so I could squeeze two horizontal segments into a single sublevel. The result was far from perfect; it added fake difficulty in a few places, sometimes the camera would scroll low/high enough to reveal the other half, and most importantly, I couldn't have a kill plane on the upper half. Having more sublevels would more than resolve this problem, and allow room for more variety in stages at the same time. And on that note...
Camera restraints. The most obvious solution to the seeing-both-sides-of-a-barrier issue presented in the last point is...just not letting the camera scroll past that barrier. This could be implemented by an object that prevents the camera from scrolling past a given point. To prevent cheap deaths from objects beyond the camera's scope suddenly appearing, the camera barrier would have to be a solid wall from both sides. This, plus the above suggestions of more sublevels and removable time limits, would make nonlinear levels much more approachable for making and for playing.
More game-specific powerups. Having only one unique powerup per theme is a bunch of wasted potential for variety, and I honestly feel we have none other than Super Mario World to blame. Still, the Mario 1 theme has three unique powerups - Mystery Mushroom, Weird Mushroom, and Big Mushroom, so clearly there's room for other unique powerups in the other themes. Mario 3 would obviously go for one of the suits. Tanooki Suit is overly redundant with the Super Leaf, making its inclusion impractical. The Frog and Hammer Suits are better, and the Hammer Suit fits especially well with a below point. NSMBU could get either the Super Acorn or Ice Flower. The Propeller Mushroom was a heaping helping of wasted potential when it comes to that theme's powerup, and the Super Acorn delivers in the NSMBU aspect while the Ice Flower is a fairly definitively NSMB-series powerup. The new SM3DW theme could take the Boomerang Flower, under the logic that it's to the Super Mario 3D Whatever subseries what the Ice Flower is to New Super Mario Bros. Alternatively, powerups could just be shared across themes as much as possible, with some substitutions made whenever relevant (e.g. Super Bell Super Acorn, Super Leaf Cape Feather).
Actual campaign organization. SMM had a very limited form of organizing levels into campaigns: if you had an entire row on Coursebot filled with levels, you could play them like a SMB1-style world. Simple, cheap, and not very effective. Being able to organize levels into campaigns (and even share them with other players?) would retain the sense of progression while giving players much more agency in how said progression is done. Similarly...
Secret exits. SMM has only one exit, and it's always anchored to the far right of the first sublevel. Being able to place exit points wherever, possibly even as less conventional methods like the ? Ball in SMW's Sunken Ghost Ship, would segue into a new ability: the ability to place secret exits. As standalone levels, this means nothing; however, secret exits would obviously influence the previous point by allowing for more nonlinearity and robust campaign design.
More checkpoints. Of course, having sprawling levels means one thing becomes clearly necessary: more checkpoints! The setup already used in SMM would work fine when scaled to greater numbers of checkpoints, as it precludes both impossible-to-reach checkpoints and impossible-to-win-from checkpoints. The issue is just the amount you can use. Checkpoints in SMM are limited to one per sublevel, which as suggested by points 3 and 4 is a recipe for scarcity. And of course, a greater amount of checkpoints is necessary for the nonlinear levels I've been consistently bringing up.
Overall, Super Mario Maker 2 looks to be a vastly improved sequel to the first game, but it still has room for improvements in many ways that haven't been announced yet. These are just some of the ways I could think of for making it far above and beyond what the first entry was.

The Best 14-Day Keto Meal Plan for Women Now
A Delicious 14-Day Keto Meal Plan & Supplements for Women-7 sample days of what to eat, plus non-boring creative meal ideas for mixing it up.
So, you’ve decided to give the whole “keto meal plan” thing a try.
How to Do the Keto Meal Plan for Women
Even though eating high fat used to be scary, you’re open to giving it a shot-bring on the butter and bacon! …
You’re also looking to keep meals enjoyable, creative and delicious. (You’re a little concerned about getting burnt out on eggs, beef, cucumbers and coconut oil).
Furthermore, you’re hoping keto doesn’t feel like a chore, or like you’re a slave to counting calories or macros.
I’ve got your back with this 14-day body-boosting keto meal plan and supplement plan for women who want to:
 FEEL good
Ensure they are getting all their nutrients
And stress LESS (not more) about what you eat
-With plenty of keto meal plan variety and creativity and variety to keep things interesting.
Keto for Health vs. Keto for Dieting
Unfortunately, when adopting any new way of eating, it’s easy to fall into the restrictive mentality:
Thinking about what you CAN’T have vs.what you CAN have.
Most keto diet articles, keto meal plan, books and YouTube videos teach you how to count macros and fat grams, shed body fat, monitor ketones in your breath, or get bigger biceps in the gym (courtesy of bodybuilding bros online)…
But NO ONE talks about:
Listening to your body
Supporting your hormones
Boosting your gut health
Fighting gut inflammation
Or ensuring you’re eating all the essential micronutrients (vitamins and minerals) you as a woman need.
After all, as a woman, there are a few things you need to be mindful about a keto diet meal plan.
And no one talks about whether or not keto is a lifestyle, or a short-term diet and body-fat loss solution.
The Big Keto Questions
Should you avoid carbs for the rest of your life?
Do you need to monitor your breath or urine ketones every day to make sure you’re still in ketosis?
Do you need to count your fat grams and carbs?
The short answer: None of these things.
In fact, when you view keto meal plan as a lifestyle (like this 14-day Meal Plan)…NOT a fad or restrictive diet…you CAN take a deep breath.
Long Term vs. Short Term Keto
If you’re transitioning to a keto meal plan or you’ve been doing it for awhile, it’s imperative to realize that keto has been studied and used extensively as a short-term diet solution for curing epilepsy (1), boosting brain power (2), balancing blood sugar (3) and shedding weight and body fat in obese individuals (4), BUT once you’ve transitioned into a lifestyle of ketosis, it doesn’t mean you’re bound there for life.
In fact, as this article explains, women may be able to handle more carbs than keto evangelists claim-and may even benefit from them in the long term from a hormonal and energy output (i.e. fitness) point of view.
In addition, for women who are ALREADY healthy (i.e. NOT obese, diabetic or experiencing horrible PMS), long term low-carb diets and/or not eating ENOUGH fat with their keto meal plan can be MORE stressful-not less-for your body, specifically your hormones.
Long-term low-carb diets can cause you to overproduce cortisol and norepinephrine. It can create an imbalance that increases pressure on the hypothalamus, pituitary and adrenal glands.
Unfortunately, it can result in symptoms of HPA-Axis Dysfunction including:
Difficulty attaining a healthy weight
Less energy and fatigue
Feeling unrested (even if you get enough sleep)
Constipation, bloating after meals and gut issues
Needing caffeine to feel “normal” or function
Insatiable appetite or complete lack of appetite (imbalance)
Anxiety, stress or low mood
Poor sleep
Craving/thinking about sugar or carbs
Poor workout results or recovery
Amenorrhea or horrible PMS
Not feeling like your “self”
Low carbohydrate diets can also impact the hormone Leptin-necessary for turning ON reproductive hormone function (like your period). Even if you ARE eating enough fat, leptin is turned on by carbohydrate metabolism, and in the long-term may be decreased through a very low carb intake.
No One Size Fits All
There really is NO one-size-fits-all approach to diet.
Some women thrive off extremely low carb diets, while others lose their period, or even gain weight after an initial rest. It all depends on TONS of other lifestyle factors like:
Your personal health history
Sleep and recovery habits
Your stress levels in other areas
Body composition
Hormonal or thyroid imbalances
Gut health
And beyond
If you have bacterial overgrowth for instance in your gut, then keto potentially can worsen the condition, as gut bacteria actually also feed off ketones. If you are burning a candle at both ends, and sleeping less than 6 hours per night, then your naturally elevated cortisol levels may be MORE stressed out by keto if you keep it up long-term.
Also, if you were eating sugar or a low-fat diet before, then your body will probably LOVE keto-a night and day difference from before.
You are NOT weak for going keto for a short term reset, then transitioning back to a modified keto (adding in a little bit more carb). And you are NOT strong for “sticking with keto meal plan” (even though it seems like your body is not responding favorably).
Simply put: Listen to your body.
Listening to Your Body: Balance (Not Keto Perfection)
For this reason, I’m a big advocate of a modified keto diet for many of my own clients interested in balancing their blood sugar, regulating their hormones, detoxing off sugar, or experiencing bloating or SIBO-like symptoms from carbohydrate intake.
What it entails?
A 7-30 day “keto reset” followed by a transition into a “modified keto,” incorporating BALANCE with a little more starchy carb and/or fruit to compliment their higher fat and moderate protein diet.
Keto Reset: 7-30 Days
Eat:
Higher Fat with a variety of healthy fats (aiming for 50-60% of intake being from fat)
Moderate Sustainable Protein
Lots of Greens and Low-starch veggies for their carbs, sticking to 20-30 grams of “net carbs”)
Modified Keto-Longer Term
Eat balanced at each meal:
Healthy Fats with Each Meal (1-2 servings, and VARIETY-not just butter, coconut oil and bacon every meal)
Sustainable proteins (the size of 1-2 palms of your hand)
Lots of Greens
Starchy Carbs/Fruit (Incorporate approximately 1-2 additional servings of starchy carbohydrate and/or fruit back into your diet daily
The best part? No counting or ketone monitoring necessary.
By the time my clients reach the Modified Keto stage, 7 to 30 days later, and are re-introducing carbs, they are MORE connected to their body and how it feels-naturally.
They recognize when “brain fog” sets in, or their SIBO symptoms (bloating) flares, or when they feel like they have a lot more energy and strength in their daily life. They are better able to self-regulate the just-right amount of carbohydrate and timing for their body (for instance in the evenings before bed, or after a workout).
It won’t come overnight, but if you stick to the philosophy of “balance” and tune in to HOW YOUR BODY FEELS, instead of what you “should eat” or what your keto monitor says, your body won’t steer you.
Here’s a sample 14-day keto meal plan including:
7 days of a “Strict” Keto (low carb) sample
7 days of a “Modified” Keto sample
daily supplement plan

Soil Based Probiotic : (like Primal Blueprint Probiotics ).
Healthy gut bacteria to boost gut and all around health.
Take 1 in the morning and preferably 1 at night. Also, don’t neglect fermented foods (like sauerkraut and fermented veggies for food-based, lactic acid probiotics).
Pre-Biotic Fiber: Partially Hydrolyzed Guar Gum (like Sunfiber)
Prebiotics are essential fiber for digestion and maximal absorption of your probiotics. (Often low on a keno-diet). Take 1 serving/day in water or tea.
Digestive Enzymes
Helpful for fully breaking down you food (especially if you experience bloating or constipation around meals). Take 1-2 with meals to banish bloating.
Bile Salts: Beta TCP
Are you fully digesting your fats with your keto meal plan? If you gallbladder or liver are not in tip top shape, fats may make you feel sick or nauseas after eating them. Take 1-2 capsules with meals.
Fermented Cod Liver Oil: Rosita
Omega 3’s, Vitamin A and Vitamin D-essential for energy and absorption of all the healthy fats you eat. Take 1 tsp./day. Unlike most fish oils, fermented cod liver oil is less likely to go rancid.

Hitting 메이저추천 in the Deer Business #639
Names of ranks of court cards and suits in various languages article on card decks This is a $5 "red light" progressive side bet that pays $1,000,000 for a royal flush in spades, using the player's five-card hand. For all the rules and analysis, please see my page on tI've been asked lots of times if an advantage can be gained by sharing information with other players. Just like the buy bet lay bets pay true odds, but because the lay bet is the opposite of the buy bet, the payout is reversed. The jack ranking higher than the queen comes from the older Portuguese games where a female knave was outranked by the knight. They also usage French-language indices.
With a pair of aces, the player is given one card for each ace and may not draw again. Here, they altered Sklanskys version of the game by exposing only one hole card and adding the Caribbean Stud Progressive Jackpot feature. And as you can see with the pay table below, Caribbean Stud Poker’s dual pay tables for the ante and raise bet make the game quite unique indeed: But while the tournament heroes and cash game wizards rely on intricate strategies to survive, anyone can learn to play Caribbean Stud Poker perfectly in a matter of minutes. In addition, double-action cards have two numbers in each square.
Most multi-roll bets may fall into the situation where a point is made by the shooter before the outcome of the multi-roll bet is decided. http://query.nytimes.com/search/sitesearch/?action=click&contentCollection®ion=TopBar&WT.nav=searchWidget&module=SearchSubmit&pgtype=Homepage#/메이저추천 An other very important term is expectation: This is the percentual gain or loss. If you’re going to practise card counting, at least learn to be discreet about it. This meant that on a $1 bet you would get $27 and the house would keep your initial dollar. Today most casino odds are set by law, and they have to be either 34 to 1 or 35 to 1. This means that the house pays you $34 or $35 and you get to keep your original $1 bet.
1400s: Familiar suits start appearing on playing cards across the world—hearts, bells, leaves, acorns, swords, batons, cups, coins. The house is geared to win in the long run because of a mathematical advantage (or the house edge) that the casino enjoys over the player. Put bets are better than place bets (to win) when betting more than 5-times odds over the flat bet portion of the put bet. For example, a player wants a $30 bet on the six. Looking at two possible bets: 1) Place the six, or 2) Put the six with odds. A $30 place bet on the six pays $35 if it wins. A $30 put bet would be a $5 flat line bet plus $25 (5-times) in odds, and also would pay $35 if it wins. Now, with a $60 bet on the six, the place bet wins $70, where the put bet ($5 + $55 in odds) would pay $71. The player needs to be at a table which not only allows put bets, but also high-times odds, to take this advantage. The first roll of a pass line bet is 2:1 advantage for the player (8 wins, 4 losses), but it's "paid for" by subsequent rolls that are at the same disadvantage to the player as the don't pass bets were at an advantage. The calculation of the roulette house edge is a trivial exercise; for other games, this is not usually the case.

The legend that oxygen is pumped into casinos to keep customers alert is not true—it would be an extreme fire hazard. For example, a player's hand of 3-4 and 2-2 and a dealer's hand of 5-6 and 5-5 would each score one point. However, since the dealer's 5-5 outranks the other three tiles, he would win the hand. For a century after its invention, craps was abused by casinos using unfair dice.

When most people think of a garden, they envision neat rows of vegetables. However, a single-row garden layout doesn’t make the most efficient use of space, nutrients, or time.
Plus, not every home gardener has enough land to plant a space-hungry single-row garden. For very small spaces, your best choice might be a container garden on a sunny patio.
If your soil is poor, consider implementing the sheet mulching method or a raised-bed garden. Space-saving ideas include using a biointensive garden or wide-row garden for in-ground, planting in a square-foot system, or raising vegetables vertically.
If you have trouble bending down to pull weeds and pick vegetables, a raised-bed garden, such as a keyhole (a circular raised bed with a narrow, wedge-shape path to a central composting system), could work well for you. As we go into a bit more detail in this article, consider which of these methods might best suit your specific needs.
Garden Setup and landscaping choices.
Container Garden
Raising plants in containers is a great way to increase your gardening space and take advantage of a sunny deck or rooftop. Containers should have drainage holes to prevent root rot and a saucer to catch run-off water.
Containers made from recycled plastic or another waterproof material will reduce moisture loss in sunny locations. Grow bags (breathable polypropylene fabric bags filled with potting soil) are another fantastic option for raising vegetables and herbs.
If planning a container garden on a rooftop or terrace, bear in mind that containers + soil + plants + water can get heavy.
Use a quality potting soil mix and follow these steps for planting:
Place gravel in the bottom of the pot to improve drainage.
Add potting soil.
Plant seedlings and gently tamp down the soil to remove air pockets.
Water thoroughly and protect from direct sun until the plants become acclimated.
Best Choices for Vegetable Container Gardens
Many crops work well in containers, including species that are naturally compact or space-saving varieties such as miniature carrots, baby beets, patio tomatoes, and even bush pumpkins. You can raise strawberries, dwarf blueberries, and miniature fruit trees (including citrus) in pots with a bit of extra care.
Protect perennial plants from temperature extremes and bring tropical fruits indoors during cold weather. Include herbs or edible flowers to attract pollinators.
Here are a few suitable plant varieties for growing in containers:
Apple: Babe Dwarf and Garden Delicious (plant both for pollination)
Basil: Fino Verde
Beet: Early Wonder
Blueberry: Top Hat
Carrot: Thumbelina
Cherry: Compact Stella (self-pollinating)
Chives: Common Chives or Garlic Chives
Cilantro: Long-standing (bolt resistant)
Citrus: Dwarf Dancy Tangerine or Dwarf Valencia Orange (self-pollinating)
Corn: Golden Miniature
Cucumber: Bush Whopper
Dill: Compatto
Eggplant: Early Black Egg
Kale: Prizm
Lettuce: Tom Thumb
Melon: Green Machine
Peach: Bonanza Miniature (self-pollinating)
Pepper: Baby Belle
Potato: Lady Finger
Pumpkin: Wee Be Little
Spinach: Space
Strawberry: Seascape
Summer squash: Balmoral
Swiss chard: Barese
Tomato: Patio
Winter squash: Jersey Golden Acorn
In ground garden
Many gardeners choose a traditional in-ground garden to raise food at home. If you have a sunny spot with decent soil and good drainage, consider switching a section of your lawn to an in-ground garden.
In windy, dry, or hot climates, the ground will stay cooler and moisture won’t evaporate as quickly compared with raised beds or containers.
As an added bonus, start-up costs of planting directly into your in-ground garden are usually minimal. Among the planting styles to consider are biointensive single-row or wide-row gardens.
BIOINTENSIVE GARDENS
The biointensive method focuses on building soil fertility and successive plantings. To create a biointensive garden, begin by double-digging compacted soil or simply turning over already loose and friable (easily crumbled) soil.
If your climate is cold and wet, the beds may be slightly raised by mounding the soil and leveling them with a garden rake. This style of raised bed uses no lumber or other materials to hold the soil in place.
In hot, dry climates, the garden beds are slightly sunken to retain moisture. In any case, each bed is planted into the native soil and amended generously with compost.
Mulch is applied between plants to reduce weeds and feed the soil. Every time a crop is harvested, more compost is added to increase soil fertility and a new crop is planted.
SINGLE-ROW GARDENS
A single-row garden is laid out in rows that are one plant wide with walking paths between rows. This design makes envisioning your garden layout easy but requires the most space and leaves a great deal of soil open for weeds to fill in.
WIDE-ROW GARDENS
The wide-row method allows gardeners to increase their harvests by reducing the amount of space dedicated to walking paths. Unlike the single-row system, in which the width of the row depends entirely on how large each crop grows, a wide-row system dedicates about 4 feet for the width of each row or bed.
The largest crops may be planted down the center and allowed to fill in the row. Medium-size crops, such as cabbage or tomatoes, are planted in a double row with 1 to 1½ feet between the plants and a walking path down each side of the double row.
Spinach, leaf lettuce, and other small plants are usually sown by broadcasting (sprinkling the seeds across the entire wide row) to fill in the space. By reducing the number of paths and spacing the plants closely, you can raise more crops in your available space, use less water and fertilizer, and reduce weed growth. Mulching the paths further reduces maintenance and increases soil fertility.
Lasagna Gardens and Sheet Mulching
Lasagna gardening refers to building plant beds with layers of brown and green matter that break down into compost as your plants grow.
To build a lasagna garden, start by loosening up the soil with a garden fork, covering it with a layer of cardboard or newspaper, then layering brown materials (straw, leaves, etc.) 3 inches thick, alternating with green materials (composted manure, kitchen waste, etc.) 1 inch thick, watering well, then topping off with 2 to 4 inches of soil.
Seeds or seedlings are planted in the soil and may need extra irrigation until the layers fully compost. This method is a wonderful way to improve fertility, start a new garden bed easily, and actually create new soil.
Sheet mulching is basically the same idea; however, you’ll cover the soil with cardboard, then add layers of mulch and allow them to break down. The following year, this bed will be ready to plant.
Raised-Bed Gardens
For gardeners dealing with poor or wet soils, a raised-bed system may be a good option. In this method, a raised structure is built or purchased and filled with soil or a potting mix.
Raised beds Warm up faster in spring and don’t freeze as quickly in fall. In hot, dry climates it’s usually better to plant at ground level or in a sunken garden to keep roots cool and reduce moisture loss. For gardeners with mobility issues, a raised-bed system could make tending vegetables easier.
There are also “table”-style gardens, which resemble a cross between a raised bed and a container garden, that allow people in wheelchairs to grow vegetables independently.
When planning a raised-bed garden, allow enough space to walk around the beds, and don’t make the beds more than 3 to 4 feet wide, so you can reach the center.
Determine the layout of your beds, build the sides, and line the bottom with cardboard or newspaper to help kill grass before adding soil. Consider repurposing old bricks instead of purchasing lumber for the sides.
For another sustainable option, consider raised-bed kits made from recycled plastic, available from some garden supply companies. A keyhole garden is basically a circular raised bed with a central compost bin.
This type of garden works well for heavy feeders such as greens and herbs. The compost in the center leaches nutrients into the soil throughout the growing season and may be worked into the bed at the end of the season.
When designing a keyhole garden, don’t make the circle so large that you aren’t able to reach the center of the bed.
Keep in mind that the compost bin in the center is key to establishing a healthy soil ecosystem, so this feature shouldn’t be eliminated.
Another “key” feature of this type of garden is that the path makes it easy to turn your compost and work it into the bed.
Some newer keyhole-garden kits are basically a U-shape raised bed with no composting system included.
You could customize such a kit by adding your own compost bin to increase the soil fertility.
However, the circular design of the original keyhole-garden layout is designed around the compost pile and makes it easier to distribute the nutrients throughout the bed.
Square-Foot Gardens
Square-foot gardening combines a raised-bed system with custom spacing requirements for different crops. A bed is built and filled with equal parts organic compost, vermiculite (a heat-treated mineral that is lightweight and absorbent) or fine bark mulch, and coconut coir or peat moss (we’ll discuss why peat moss isn’t a sustainable choice in next article).
A 1-foot-by-1-foot grid is laid out over the bed to guide your planting. Large plants (such as zucchini or tomatoes) are generally planted in a 2-foot-by-2-foot square (or larger), and smaller crops such as scallions or spinach are planted in a grid of nine plants in a 1-foot-by-1-foot space.
Each plant is given enough room to reach maturity without leaving extra space where weeds can fill in and compete with crops.
This compact planting scenario requires less maintenance compared to a traditional single-row system. The “soil” mixture is friable, is great for plant roots, and retains moisture without causing root rot.
Fertilizer runoff into paths between rows is no longer an issue when planting intensively. In addition, this system is great for setting up an “instant garden” when you wish to get started quickly.
Straw-Bale Gardens
Another option for an easy planting space is a straw-bale garden. In this method, straw bales are placed in a sunny spot and soaked with water several weeks before planting, to begin breaking them down.
Situate the bales with the cut-end facing up and remove enough straw from the center of the top of the bale to create a shallow trench.
Fill the trench with soil and plant with seeds or seedlings. Keep the straw well watered to speed up decomposition and keep plants hydrated. The rotting straw will nourish your plantings and makes a great soil amendment.
Vertical Gardens and Vertical Stacking
Gardeners with limited space can produce more food by “growing up.” The simplest way to make use of vertical space is by training crops on a trellis or arbor instead of letting them sprawl.
Vertical gardens are great for such crops as cucumbers, pole beans, and grapes. You can also raise food in a vertical living wall planter.
In this twist on container gardening, a planter system is securely attached to a sturdy wall, filled with potting mix, fitted with an irrigation system, then planted.
Creating your own from an already designed plan is an option, or you can purchase one that’s ready-made. Consider this method for small varieties of herbs and salad greens, or choose plants that grow well in a hanging planter, such as strawberries.
Vertical Garden
Vertical stacking is another technique in which plants with different heights and light requirements are raised together to make better use of space. Tall plants that need full sun work well with shorter, shade-tolerant crops that cover the soil and help reduce weed growth. Some vertical stacking combinations that work well include:
sweet corn and pumpkins
sunflowers and lettuce
tomatoes and spinach
In another vertical-stacking method, a tiered planter provides space to raise vegetables, herbs, and strawberries.
Choices include strawberry pots with planting holes in the sides, planters with stepped planting boxes, or tiers of window box–style planters on metal racks.
Edible Landscaping
If you’re having trouble working a vegetable garden into your backyard, consider adding edible crops to your decorative landscaping.
In addition to creating a lovely and delicious landscape, you’ll also provide a diversity of plants to attract beneficial insects. Choose colorful salad greens, herbs, and pretty vegetables and fruits to dress up your landscape as well as your dinner plate.
Here are some fantastic choices for edible crops that will look right at home in a flower bed:
Artichoke
Bright Lights Swiss chard
Cayenne pepper
Cherry tomato
Chives
Freckles lettuce
Opal basil
Red Russian kale
Scarlet runner bean
Seascape strawberry
Variegated sage
Other options include blueberry bushes, dwarf fruit trees, and a host of perennial and annual herbs, vegetables, and fruits.
Check to see which plants are suitable for your growing conditions, and be sure to include a variety of different heights, textures, colors, and blooms that provide visual interest as well as food for your table (not to mention the butterflies, bees, and birds you wish to attract to your garden).
PICKING THE METHOD THAT WORKS FOR YOU
Given the many different gardening methods to consider, deciding which one is best for you might feel a little overwhelming.
Start by setting the location of your new garden, assessing your growing conditions, and determining how much space you can dedicate to growing food.
Think, too, about how much time you have to set up and maintain your garden. Additionally, what are your gardening goals? Which crops do you enjoy eating and how much of each can you put to use? There’s a lot to think about, so let’s dig in!
How Much Space Do You Have?
You’ll need to take a survey of your property to determine the best location for the fruits, herbs, and vegetables you wish to plant.
Having a large, sunny garden space is ideal; however, in the absence of this space sometimes edible plantings must be worked into shady spots or around other complications.
If you have a small yard, consider spaces around your patio, in the foundation plantings around the home, and between the sidewalk and street as potential planting areas. Perhaps there is a community garden nearby where you may rent a space.
When planning, be sure to take into account the mature size of trees and shrubs, and consider adding a bed for shade-tolerant crops such as lettuce, peas, spinach, and beets.
Siting and Sizing Your Garden
Start your eco-friendly garden out right by selecting the best location and making good use of what you already have. Here are some handy tips:
Choose a spot with 6+ hours of sun a day.
Site your garden near the home and a faucet for easy maintenance.
Check soil health, structure, and drainage.
Avoid underground utilities or septic fields.
Keep in mind that replacing some of your lawn with a garden can increase biodiversity and reduce the time and gas needed to mow. Alternatively, consider growing food in containers on a sunny deck, rooftop, or balcony.
Raised beds are a great option for an area with poor drainage or rocky soil. Many edible plants are attractive enough to tuck into a flower bed if you have a small lot. Another consideration is how much space to plan for your garden. The answer depends on the amount of food you need and which crops you’ll grow.
One bed of about 12 square feet should be plenty for a single person. For a family of four to eat fresh produce in season and preserve some for winter, you may need to cultivate 96 square feet, or more.
Some vegetables need a lot of space (e.g., winter squash and pumpkins), whereas other crops produce an abundance of food in a small space (e.g., tomatoes and pole beans).
Use the “My Organic Garden Worksheet” to make a list of the crops you wish to grow and to estimate the amount you’ll need.
Keep this list handy when you read the guide to common vegetables, their average yield, and how much space they require.
How Much Time Do You Have?
You don’t want your garden to take up every extra minute of your day, so think carefully about how much time you can dedicate to this project.
Are there certain seasons when you go on vacation? Need to take children to soccer practice every weekend? Have a maxed-out schedule because of other obligations? Consider these types of questions.
Be realistic when planning the size of your garden so you don’t get overwhelmed. It’s better to start small and add to your plantings when time allows. Plan ahead for time spent weeding, watering, pruning, checking for insects, and harvesting.
Use time-saving techniques, such as mulching to prevent weeds and installing drip irrigation (system of hoses or pipes that drip water onto the soil next to a specific plant) to reduce watering responsibilities.
Locate beds close to the house, if possible, to reduce time spent walking to and from the garden to harvest and maintain your plantings.
Method Mash-Ups
If you can’t decide which garden methods would work best for your specific needs, don’t worry! There’s no reason you have to stick with just one.
Instead, use a combination of different systems according to your space and growing conditions. For example:Install a trellis for climbing crops as a backdrop for a bed that mixes insectary plants with colorful salad vegetables and herbs. Turn a large, sunny backyard into a wide-row or biointensive garden with a compost bin and potting shed nearby. Use the sheet mulching technique around sprawling pumpkins and squash. Grow vines on an arbor over part of your patio, with vertical stacking containers of strawberries and herbs and large pots for miniature blueberries in sunny areas.Use square-foot spacing techniques in an in-ground garden rather than a raised bed.
Of course, these ideas are just a sampling for putting your outdoor space to work for you. Pay careful attention to each area of your yard and look for micro-climates that have more sun, while avoiding areas that are windy or more susceptible to frost, and choose the best gardening technique for each spot.

Texas hold 'em and Omaha are two well-known variants of the community card family. Typically, the numbers are replaced with beginning reader words, pictures, or unsolved math problems.
The European designs always seemed to represent the divisions of society. Hearts are said to represent the Church, and Bells the nobility while Leaves and Acorns, the middle classes and the peasantry respectively. Avoid folding small pairsIf you consider yourself to be a Caribbean Stud Poker newbie, you’ll probably experience some confusion when you find yourself in possession of pairs of a low denomination. In fact, you’ll find that you’ll get pairs of a low denomination quite often. The ace was stamped to indicate that the tax had been paid, and forging an ace was a crime punishable by death. To this day, the ace is boldly designed to stand out. The double-one tiles and double-six tiles are known as the Day and Teen tiles, respectively. The system, also called montant et demontant (from French, meaning upwards and downwards), is often called a pyramid system. 우카지노 It was here that the single zero roulette wheel became the premier game, and over the years was exported around the world, except in the United States where the double zero wheel had remained dominant.
Organized gambling on a larger scale and sanctioned by governments and other authorities in order to raise money began in the 15th century with lotteries—and centuries earlier in China with keno. On season 1 of ITV1's Red or Black?, a player can win £1,000,000 by guessing either red or black on the roulette wheel. That is not true. When playing blackjack with a dealer and using the right Strategy at hand, whatever the other player does on his end does not matter or change the outcome.Other tips such as not buying insurance, avoiding certain types of blackjack, and doubling your bet after a loss but reducing your bet after a win can also be considered.
With one bingo hall for every 6,800 residents, Cheektowaga, New York is believed to have the highest concentration of bingo halls in the United States. Even after casino gambling was legalized in Nevada in 1931, its growth outside that state was stifled for decades. Casino operators usually think of price in terms of what is known as the average or expected house advantage on each bet placed by players.Keno payouts are based on how many numbers the player chooses and how many of those numbers are "hit", multiplied by the proportion of the player's original wager to the "base rate" of the paytable.
If it is a ten-card, it is turned up, and those players who have made the insurance bet win and are paid double the amount of their half-bet - a 2 to 1 payoff. In certain states, such as Florida and California, tribal owners have been active in blocking new entrants, and they spend tens of millions of dollars annually on political contributions, PACs, lobbying efforts and ballot initiatives to maintain a competitive edge. Brian Minter: Our long gardening season has just begun
Tumblr media
Well, this is it — the May long weekend — when, traditionally, most Canadian gardeners plant the majority of their food crops. It’s quite uncanny how similar the high and low temperatures are across our country, even as we look north.
Thanks to the April warm spell, many folks in southern B.C. already have their gardens in. Whether resulting from the early mild temperatures or the COVID-19 pandemic, or both, the demand for heat-loving tomatoes and peppers is through the roof. It makes me chuckle a bit because the intensity has been equivalent to the toilet paper rush of a year ago.
As someone who never plants his garden until late June, let me assure you, we have a long season ahead, and there is time for everything to thrive and mature. Both seeds and transplants will grow far more quickly with longer daylight hours and warmer day and night temperatures.
As for the availability of seeds and plants, there is a reasonable supply in garden stores across the province. Because of the high demand, seed companies are currently restocking seed racks and vegetable growers are producing second and third crops of starter plants. If you can’t find your preferred variety, there are lots of great alternatives.
Let’s start with the big three heat-loving veggies.
Tomatoes are certainly the No. 1 favourites, and they fall into four categories. Among the early-ripening group Early Girl and Ultra Girl (Stokes Seeds) are among the best. As transplants, they mature in about 60 days and are the first to ripen in July. Super Fantastic, Celebrity and Champion are great alternatives. For the best flavour, make sure they are fully ripe before harvesting.
Cherry tomatoes rank next in popularity. Tall-growing Sweet 100 and Sweet Million produce large quantities of bite-size fruits that mature in approximately 60 to 65 days, followed closely by Sun Sugar, Sun Gold and Sweet Gold, three very flavourful yellow varieties. Grape tomatoes have also jumped in popularity. The grape-shaped fruits of Red Grape and Juliet mature in 65 days.
The demand for larger slicing tomatoes is still huge. While everyone knows the name Beefsteak, the improved spinoff varieties, like Big Beef, Beefmaster, Better Boy and Big Boy, are wonderful large slicing varieties.
Over the past few years, interest in growing tomatoes in containers has grown exponentially. The spillover varieties, such as Tumbler, Tumbling Tom Red and Tumbling Tom Yellow, are, by far, the leaders for hanging baskets and pots.
Today, there are literally over 100 tomato varieties, including La Roma and San Marzano paste varieties and the many long season, flavour-packed heritage tomatoes. So, you clearly have a wide range of choices.
Tumblr media
Peppers are right on the heels of tomatoes in terms of popularity. Although hot peppers are trending, sweet bell types (green, red, orange, yellow and chocolate) are still No. 1. Sweet Hungarian peppers are not only sweet but also incredibly versatile for preserving.
Among the hots, jalapenos are the best known, but the slightly milder Anaheim, Ancho and Poblano are becoming very popular.  The slightly hotter Serrano types also fall within the comfortably hot range. They all ripen in 70 to 80 days.
Interest is growing in super hot peppers, like Habanero, Scotch Bonnet, Ghost Chili, Caribbean Red and Carolina Reaper. They all take far longer — approximately 120 days — to mature. You must be very careful when handling these incredibly hot varieties, especially if you have children.
Like tomatoes, there are over 100 varieties of peppers. Many are unique, and all have varying heat levels. To find out which ones are best suited to your tastes, Google the Scoville Scale, a system measuring the heat of various peppers.
Tumblr media
Cucumbers round out the top three heat-lovers, and I break them down into four of the most popular categories. For simple slicing varieties, the old Marketmore types are just fine, but there have been some huge improvements. Bitter-free varieties, like Sweet Success and Slice More are burpless types.
English Telegraph and other so-called long English types of burpless cucumbers are well loved, but quite frankly, the Japanese burpless varieties, because of their easy-to-grow and super tasty fruits, have really taken over this niche, particularly varieties like Tasty Green, Burpless Supreme and Burpless 26.
Today, there are so many great pickling varieties. Cross Country, Pioneer and Homemade Pickles are some of the old reliables, but the new gherkins are bitter-free. With pickling varieties, this is less of an issue.
Cucumbers for growing in containers are very much in demand, and Spacemaster, Patio Snacker and Bush Pickle are ideal candidates. Fast-growing and early-maturing, they perform nicely in containers, especially if they are trellised.
And then there are the specialty cucumbers, like Perseus and Picolino, two short, burpless gourmet types and the older, Middle Eastern sweet varieties, such as Ishtar and Babylon that have quite a following.
If you have lots of space, you might want to try the bite-sized cucamelons that look like miniature watermelons. They are nice for eating on their own or in a salad but watch out — the plants tend to muscle in and take over more than their fair share of territory.
As temperatures continue to warm up, it will soon be time to plant out the serious heat lovers, like eggplants, squash and melons.  Eggplants are growing in popularity as we begin to expand our appreciation of dishes from around the world. With squash, there are both summer types, like zucchini, and winter types, like buttercup, acorn and butternut.
Because they need a long growing season (80 plus days), start melons in containers to grow them quite large before setting them out. In a very hot spot, we can grow great cantaloupe, honeydews and baby watermelons.
All these heat-loving, summertime plants first need to be acclimatized outdoors. For a few days, place them in a spot that is out of the sun and wind. This will help then tolerate any variable weather conditions.
There’s still lots of time over the next two to three weeks to plant these garden favourites, and there continues to be good availability in most garden stores.  So, folks, it’s time to get planting.

Unlike the three Spirits mentioned above, these four "Liberties" are not wearing the Phrygian cap of liberty but brandish them on staffs or spears. They are also all female. http://query.nytimes.com/search/sitesearch/?action=click&contentCollection®ion=TopBar&WT.nav=searchWidget&module=SearchSubmit&pgtype=Homepage#/먹튀검증사이트목록 Eleven other local lotteries in Nebraska followed suit, until the state banned the devices, effective 1985. The region of Limousine lay in the middle of France on the western side. Its design, which is regarded as a bad copy of the Auvergne design, was used by the cities of Limoges, Angoulême and Poitiers. Limoges also exported much of her production to Spain. Spanish-suited cards are still used in France, mostly in Northern Catalonia, and Brittany and the Vendée with the latter two using the archaic Aluette cards.
If you are a blackjack fan or just want to learn more, you should read on. You can learn its origin and other useful information. Playing cards spread  in Europe rapidly -- in Spain 1371, in Switzerland 1377, and in Italy and France 1380. The game was then patented using the name Caribbean Stud Poker. Some time later, the casino owner sold the patent for over $30 million to a company called Mikohn. Suits are irrelevant. In most varieties of the game, a player receiving two cards of the same rank may split them, receiving a second card for each, and play the two hands independently of each other.
This is one move which led him to bring back his company from bankruptcy. The player would receive 7:1 minus half the total bet payout on half the total bet for craps and 15:1 minus half the total bet payout on half the total bet for 11 (yo). No casino currently runs a craps table with a bet that yields a player edge full-time. The red card in the red-numbered box corresponding to the red die, and the blue card in the blue-numbered box corresponding to the blue die are then turned over to form the roll on which bets are settled.

The tuck box may have a seal applied.Card manufacturers must pay special attention to the registration of the cards, as non-symmetrical cards can be used to cheat. In Germany, the card game that is played determines the type of deck that will be used - and all German decks are not alike. (See the page on Germany in this section for different decks.) On the left is a picture of German suit symbols. The first card features the "acorn" or in German the Eichel suit. The second card is of the "bells" suit or Schellen. Although the third card appears to look like a "spade", it is a "leaf", sometimes called a "green" and in German known as the Grun or Blatt suit. The fourth suit is the "hearts" suit or Herz. Germany produces playing cards for many different countries today. Some of these exports are made with the suit symbols illustrated, some exported decks use other symbols. Suiss suit symbols are somewhat similar to the German suits, but there are differences. The first card in the Swiss deck pictured in the second photograph on the left is also known as the "acorn" or Eichel suit. The second card is the "shield" suit or Schilten. The third card is the "bells" suit or Schellen. Finally, the fourth card is in the "roses" suit or Rosen. People in Swizerland who play a game (or a number of related games) called Jass will use a deck with these suit symbols. However, people living near the French border may use decks with the French suit indicators, while people living near the Italian border may use Latin suited cards. Casinos must set the i-Deal Plus shuffler to the “Caribbean Stud Poker Cover All” mode. After the dealer removes his hand from the shuffler and presses the green button, the i-Deal Plus will determine the number of players in the round and display the payouts on its front screen. The deck has Shields, Arrows, Helms, Swords, Crescent Moons, Orbs, Hearts, and Crowns, each suit numbered 1-9, plus a suit of dragons numbered 1-10, providing an 82 card deck. The system was released in 1996.
