Book Rec: Little Mushroom 🍄
Do you love scifi and especially dystopian or post-apocalyptic settings? Are you a fan of unique worldbuilding or non-human characters? Do you enjoy reading about morally grey characters or LGBT characters? Or maybe you're a fan of star-crossed lovers or even enemies-to-lovers?
Try Little Mushroom! It's an award-winning dystopian scifi novel by the Chinese scifi and fantasy author Shisi. While the author is also known for her other novels, Little Mushroom is currently the only one that has been translated into English.
The official synopsis:
“Until the day humanity falls.”
In the year 2020, Earth’s magnetic poles disappeared and humankind was nearly wiped out by cosmic radiation. Within the span of a hundred years, living creatures began to mutate and devour each other while the remaining humans, numbering in the tens of thousands, struggled bitterly in their man-made bases.
In the Abyss, home to the mutated xenogenics, there lived a sentient little mushroom. Because it had been nourished by the blood and flesh of the deceased human An Ze, not only did it take on a similar-looking human form, but a similar name as well: An Zhe.
An Zhe is determined to go to the human base to search for his spore, which had been harvested by humans. Once there, however, he faces the omnipresent risk of discovery and certain death as he tries to keep his non-human nature hidden from the Judges, whose responsibility is to inspect for and eliminate xenogenics like himself. And of all the Judges, Colonel Lu Feng is the most perceptive and merciless—as soon as he determines that someone is a xenogenic, he will execute that person on the spot.
But An Zhe's mutation goes undetected by Lu Feng's eyes, and so a tale of humans and xenogenics unfolds…
Where to read?
The story is divided into two volumes, available in both ebook and print format. The ebook version is very affordable and you can start reading immediately:

Getting to Know Your BL Mutuals
rules: answer the questions and tag some people. include the tag ‘g2ky BL mutuals 2022’ on your post so we can find everyone’s answer.
thanks to @yanwushi for the tag- I am finally doing this!!! Doing both novels as well as visual media
What have been BLs that took you by surprise this year?
Wushuang/Peerless. I was going to read it eventually, but Thousand Autumns is such a favorite I was putting it off because I thought there was no way Wushuang could be as good as its predecessor. @yanwushi finally got me to read it and omfg... seriously the only person more obsessed with Cui Buqu than Feng Xiao is me. This one rocketed to the top of my favorite novels in record speed. I also want to mention that as someone who is chronically ill, I really appreciated the way Cui Buqu's disability was handled- honestly I think it's the best portrayal of chronic illness/disability I've read in a c-novel.
Nan Chan. I hate calling this book weird because I think that's a loaded term but it's unusual for sure, and I didn't expect to fall in love with a book that's about a sword and a demon carp. As someone who is autistic I got a lot out of both main characters trying to figure out how to act "human" and deal with identifying and processing their emotions. Also I just think that Cang Ji should be able to eat whomever he wants, as a treat.
Little Mushroom. “你只是一只很小的蘑菇” CRYING SCREAMING THROWING UP. I never in a million years expected to be emotionally compromised by a book about a sentient mushroom but here we are. Normally I love angst but I had to stop reading and check if it had a happy ending because I honestly couldn't have handled it if it didn't (it does). Also honestly one of the best pieces of post-apocalyptic fiction that I read and I loved the aspects of cosmic horror in the second volume.
It's not technically a BL, but Under the Skin (c-drama). I usually don't watch modern crime dramas for personal reasons, but I decided to give it a chance for language practice and because I like Tan Jianci. I expected to have it on in the background and instead the show grabbed me by the throat and wouldn't let go. (tho it made me impatient for the Mo Du/Silent Reading donghua and live action, and for Winner is King. when???)
What have been BLs that you felt a bit disappointed with this year?
Copper Coins. I enjoyed it and I thought that Xue Xian is a delightfully full-of-himself protagonist but to me it felt like a young author's early work that needed trimming in some parts and expansion in others. I just really felt like it wasn't the masterpiece that I'd heard it talked up to be. (Although to be fair I think I did it a major disservice reading it after Nan Chan)
The Defective's donghua. It just didn't grab me at all which sucks bc I like the novel, and I really hated what they did with some of the female characters (wtf is with Penny's character design and what was with the choice to have Mint never speak??)
Legend of Exorcism donghua. I know there are people who adore this show, and I desperately wanted to like it... but there was something I can't quite put my finger on that turned me off. I think I would like it more if I'd read the novel, I felt like there were undercurrents of a good story that weren't being properly delved or something. That said, it did pique my interest enough to put the novel on my to-read list, and I'm looking forward to getting to it.
What has been your favorite BL this year?
WushuangWushuangWushuangWushuangWushuang. Did I mention Wushuang already?
Favorite BL/GL couples (not just of 2022)
Feng Xiao & Cui Buqu (Wushuang), Gu Yun & Chang Geng (Sha Po Lang), Yan Wushi & Shen Qiao (Thousand Autumns), Ranwan (Erha)
If you had to suggest a BL for someone what would it be?
If you like xianxia and a quirky found family (and also knives), hands down Liu Yao: The Revitalization of Fu Yao Sect by Priest
If you're more into wuxia elements and rivals-to-lovers-but-still-rivals, Wushuang/Peerless by Meng Xishi.
Please, more people need to read these books. Also if you're looking for more things to read, I have a libguide reading list here! I need to update it, but it's an ongoing project. Let me know if there are any BL you think I should add!
What’s your non-BL favorite this year?
WIND BLOWS FROM LONGXI *banging pots and pans together* screaming, crying, throwing up. IT'S SO GOOD. I desperately want more "gritty" historical shows like this one. The Three Kingdoms Period is one of my special interests and Chen Kun is one of my favorite actors, seriously this show was almost tailor-made for me. Also for you Guardian fans out there Bai Yu is one of the two main characters.
Honorable mention to Love Between Fairy and Devil, which made me take back everything I had previously said about Dylan Wang Hedi's acting.
Tagging: I think everyone I'm mutuals with has already done this, but if you see it and you want to please pretend I tagged you :)

Oracle of the White Rabbit
I was recently quite excited to learn about the newest Matrix movie, which was kind of weird for me, as I haven't been much into tv & movies for quite a while now. To my surprise, it was the soundtrack to the preview that immediately captured my attention - almost more then the preview itself... and then it got stuck in my head - for DAYS, on repeat.
**Cue the Morpheus voiceover: "What you know you can't explain, but you feel it.... You don't know WHAT it is, but it's there - like a splinter in your mind, driving you mad."** Yeah, that song was dead set on getting my attention.
When I finally got rid of it, I started realizing a few days later that I understood it beyond the surface meaning; and basically, I decoded the story that it was telling - it turns out to be all about right NOW. Is it prophetic? Subconscious social engineering? Quantum entanglement between the life and the art, so that they mirror and reflect each other? Who knows...
It appears to me to be a sort of trigger, or a reminder of what to do when the time comes, of what you NEED to do - and yes, I realize that this sounds very MK ultra secret agent-y; but it is what it is. I assumed it was probably just a message for me, but then I had 2 separate YouTuber's basically confirm the message in their own unique way, and then supplied additional info that is... quite compelling and pertinent to keep in mind, and utilize. So I'll link those two vids below the song decoding portion, but please watch them as they have some VERY helpful info in them - especially the 2nd half of Naughty Beav's vid, the Alba Weinman part. Anyways, here's the song with lyrics, and the decode I got for it:
https://youtu.be/YE3ZXm92CJ0
Preface: The story overall is describing the multidimensional aspects of the human being, and how certain "controllers" have manipulated the general population into thinking that we are only ONE SINGLE aspect (i.e. this linear 3D realm template of a human) of our various extended selves - and have waged war (and still are) to maintain that control over us to keep their positions power.
Song: White Rabbit by Jefferson Airplane
ONE PILL MAKES YOU LARGER AND ONE PILL MAKES YOU SMALL These “pills” are alternate dimensional perspectives - the actual embodiment of them from a larger and smaller POV - Annunaki are generally around 10-16 feet tall, and the Fae are considered to be tiny little elemental beings; BOTH sizes make you visit WONDERLAND though! You can SEE & FEEL that there is MORE beyond just this vessel and life viewpoint, more to YOU that goes on to other places where this particular body-ego cannot. AND THE ONES (pills) THAT MOTHER GIVES YOU DON'T DO ANYTHING AT ALL The world perspectives and programs installed in our parents are for a different agenda, time and place - they've since expired and are therefore useless to us... those POV's just don't do anything, except stagnate you. GO ASK ALICE (<your inner child, direct connection to Source Creator) WHEN SHE'S 10 FEET TALL (<in her Annunaki 5th dimensional or above form) Oh yeah, I'd LOVE to see you try and argue those belief systems with THAT version of her/YOU, that'll be fun! Good luck with that, BwahahaaHaahaaa!!!
AND IF YOU GO CHASING RABBITS This "You" ISN'T YOU - it's a hypothetical scenario. As in: If YOU were part of a group of dark, nefarious beings, who CAN'T timeline jump to higher realms on their own, but wanted to... wouldn't YOU chase those 'rabbits', to sneak in after them, (or somehow piggyback on them) to go thru the (portals) tunnels that they naturally create? Well... wouldn't you?!!! AND YOU KNOW YOU'RE GOING TO FALL These beings know their time is limited; as the energetic  frequencies of the earth raises - LITERALLY - we have to ELEVATE with Earth (or die, as it’s not compatible); but they can only FALL since they cannot follow us - their heavier energies & choices aligned with that vibe basically anchor them down. When the Earth sheds those lower energies, they appear to “fall’ - Earth rides a sine wave up and down in a continuous cycle; right now the rollercoaster is ascending. TELL 'EM A HOOKAH SMOKING CATERPILLER HAS GIVEN YOU THE CALL Say it with me: COVER STORY!!! So just tell them that you've contacted extraterrestrials, or "Ashtar Command" in a higher dimension, who relays "guidance" to you while you're in a channeling state of mind... exchange your religious/guru worship programming (it’s SO last year) for an unvetted channeled source to worship and obey blindly instead. Pick your poison, ‘cuz dying is fun (whether that be literal, spiritual or otherwise).FYI: I am anti-establishment regarding religions; your connection to Source Creator is meant to be direct & personal, always growing - those outside things are GUIDEPOSTS for consideration and participation when you deem it useful. Not necessary, though, and CERTAINLY not mandatory... they can be helpful though, nevertheless. CALL ALICE WHEN SHE WAS JUST SMALL No doubt they WOULD try to contact you while you were young and vulnerable (and they might have already) - train a child up in the way they should go, and all that. It applies whether it be physically done or in the astral/dream state - it's also prime alien abduction time, in both cases, too: it happens most often around the 3-10 years old timeframe, generally. **Alternatively, this could mean that YOU need to recall your inner child/younger self, when you were more pure - and RECONNECT to (the true you, prior to life’s enforced programming) yourself from there, as a means of counteracting and recognizing any false “messages of light”.**
WHEN THE MEN ON THE CHESSBOARD This is the Masonic, Illuminati and other controller group factions (alphabet agencies included) - The chessboard is primarily associated with the Masonic lodges, though, like the ladder - it's their way of bypassing the middle path (opening the 3rd eye, spiritually evolving through kundalini awakening and such), but still attempting to climb up to 'higher planes'... through magickal rituals and workings of one sort or another, I think. The Sun and Moon pillars are on either side, the battle of fire and Ice. THEY are the ones that "play the game" with humanity, as it were, and “set the stage” on the gameboard in many ways.
It’s like this in their art and iconography...
Tumblr media
But it’s like THIS in the physical body structure, see:
Tumblr media
Side Note: I learned this and wrote it down/drew it up by watching and following Lavette's channel on YouTube - her channel is under this (her real) name, so if you want to understand & decode the esoteric symbology and all that, check her out, she has a wealth of knowledge to share...  it's great stuff!!!
Anyways, moving on with the decode...
>> when the men on the chessboard << GET UP AND TELL YOU WHERE TO GO Or where you CAN'T go, or things you can’t go DO - lockdowns, anyone? AND YOU'VE JUST EATEN SOME KIND OF MUSHROOM Or taken some kind of drug, to check out (with alcohol, pharmaceuticals) as a means of coping; or perhaps just a medically coerced and/or forced untested injectable... that shall remain unnamed. (a la Voldemorte)  AND YOUR MIND IS MOVING LOW Because your consciousness and/or interdimensional capacities are capped, having been anchored down into lower frequencies due to your choices. ASK ALICE I THINK SHE'LL KNOW Ask your inner child/spiritual connection WHAT TO DO
WHEN LOGIC AND PROPORTION HAVE FALLEN SLOPPY DEAD That's RIGHT NOW, with the media, the actions of the government, corporations & the alphabet agencies - everything from them is WAY out of proportion, (they're self contradicting) and illogical...  it's “fallen sloppy dead” is about as literal of a description as you can get. AND THE WHITE KNIGHT IS TALKING BACKWARDS Is this Biden? Maybe Trump? Could be whomever you deem to be our hero, or fixate on as a knight "in shining armor" charging to our rescue, I suppose. AND THE RED QUEEN'S "OFF WITH HER (THEIR) HEAD!!!" The red queen is the sentient A.I. computer located under the airport in Colorado from what I understand... so this could be indicating the weather warfare or DEW, the internet consciousness battlefront, or a whole host of other things that could be directed by that (besides the jabs), which seeks to kill off a great swath of humanity. The Red Queen could also be a means to direct the jib-jabbed peoples like zombies when they're "turned on" like antennas, once the graphene in the injectables does its work. It would certainly explain all the “zombie apocalypse” protocols and policies that have been made by certain corporations and agencies - all of which was done in a serious manner... so here’s that.
So, now THIS is where it gets interesting (for me, anyways).
Every. Single. Time. That I hear this next verse, I hear it spoken a DIFFERENT way, like a glitch that simultaneously layers a different version on top of the other one, so that they are both communicated at once. This is the 'secret key', the ANSWER - remember, this part of the song says: When this & that happens, and when this person and that ‘person’ are acting THIS WAY - THEN:
REMEMBER WHAT THE DORMOUSE SAYS Dormouse - a tiny squirrel-like mouse, that is rather famous for being able to HIBERNATE for EXTENDED PERIODS OF TIME - sometimes 6 months of the year, or more, if the temperatures stay cold enough. The lower the frequency, the cooler the temperature, usually. (The Sleeper MUST Awaken! ~ Dune) << This word - Dormouse - transforms into DHARMA. So the verse: "Remember what the Dormouse said" turns into "Remember what the DHARMA SAYS". For more on dharma, see here:  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dharma
The dormouse speaks of the head - waking up and remembering mentally; but when it morphs into dharma, it speaks of the heart waking up; and returning to it’s inherent wisdom, returning to the spirit-soul self. So that is the key message that keeps coming thru on this:
Remember what the dormouse/dharma Says: FEED YOUR HEAD-HEART CONNECTION (and stack your dharma)!!! Spiritual GAINS, baby!
The final verse is repeated twice; I believe this indicates that the areas to apply it to are your outward actions here in the outer world, and your inner realm locals: your thoughts and feelings. FEED the CONNECTION on each level, to be and do good, and to stand up in integrity and defend that sacred space on EACH LEVEL whenever it's needed. The mind-heart connection and coherence part is actually mentioned specifically in The Naughty Beaver video linked below, too... but there will undoubtedly be internal emotional and mental attacks that only you can recognize and shield against, or fight back against to maintain your inner calm and wholeness of spirit. The stronger the mind-heart coherence is, though, the higher you vibe naturally; so it grants you a certain level of protection automatically - I feel that's why they push the jab-berwocky so hard through social/economic pressure, and emotional guilt and gaslighting; to block that potential before you ever reach it, so you can still be "hacked", or locked down, energetically.
Feed your head = higher mind = higher perspective. Maintain THAT, then ACT FROM THERE. (Faith without works is dead, yo) See the other two vids below, and thank you for reading thus far. You/We’ve got this - Be Excellent to (yourself and) Each Other... and Party On!

Off The Cuff 27/02/2020
https://www.vice.com/en_us/article/bjwv85/iceborne-review-monster-hunter-at-its-peak-colonialist-fantasy-included Because I love Monster Hunter and Vice is proving itself to be moronic, I want to quote and address points made in the article. Replies follow the  🍀 while quotes follow the >
> As you finish this quest, the Field Team Leader remarks “This freezing cold place was out here waiting for us the whole time.” This land, wild and untamed, was “waiting,” precluding any sort of natural state without humans. It is here for our use.
🍀 It’s a manner of speaking, not meant to be taken in a literal sense. The land is not sentient. I say this because the article follows up with...
>  The colonialist fantasy in Monster Hunter World was often couched with a weak framing as “ecological study”.
🍀 Which is absolutely moronic. I’ll explain.
Settling on land isn’t colonialism. It doesn’t even fit the meaning we all understand or even the dictionary meaning:
“ the policy or practice of acquiring full or partial political control over another country, occupying it with settlers, and exploiting it economically.”
Every single civilization, every single colony, every single tribe, indigenous or no, would be guilty of colonialism if this is the bloody fucking case.
>  We must learn more about the ecology so that we may be its shepards. The Elder Dragons need to be driven out or they could cause catastrophes that would change the “natural” ecosystem, ignoring that much like forces of nature in our world, they are part of that ecosystem.
🍀 I’m not sure if it’s supposed to be bad that we’re to be “shepherds” here. There’s always the message that we have to take care of the planet, the ecosystem, etc etc, which would fall into “shepherding”.
Elder Dragons are walking disaster zones. They also have a tendency of being invasive species (Amatsumagatsuchi in MHP3rd), with some being particularly malevolent (Fatalis). So no, they do absolutely cause catastrophes and they do tilt the balance of the ecosystem. Going by the point being made here, Deviljho should be spared as well despite the fact that it’s an invasive species known for turning places into desolate wastelands.
Misguided at best.
>  There comes a moment, somewhere around the 10 hour mark, when Seliana is under threat of being wiped out by the titular Iceborne Wyvern, Velkhana. The Field Team Leader gives an impassioned speech as to why The Commission should stay in the Hoarfrost Reach instead of retreating back to their original base in Astera. “Aren’t we part of the ecosystem too? Then let’s fight as part of this ecosystem.” Gone are the half-hearted attempts to “research the ecosystem, and be in balance [with it]” as The Commander said just moments before (a statement not without its own colonial baggage).
🍀 Except, as far as I recall and I may absolutely be wrong about it or mix it up with something else, MonHun acknowledges that we’re “humans” (I’m using this term for convenience as I don’t have the words for all the other races/species) and for us to live we must carve our own home. The message is that despite this, we’re still a part of the ecosystem and we should respect it, try our damnedest not to fuck it up too hard.
The author of the article does not understand the meaning of the word colonialism and cannot differentiate it from settling land. If settling land is colonialism then well done, every single bloody civilization, every single village, yes, including the aboriginals, have committed it. They’re mixing things up here, which shows a lack of understanding about the topic they attempt to broach, which shows how ill-equipped they are to begin addressing the topic.
>  Now those ecological concepts are rendered synonymous with the self-interest of the invading settlers.
🍀 Dear African tribes settling the land. You’re invading nature, how dare you.
Bad argument formed because the author can’t differentiate between settling a piece of land and forming colonizing a country.
>  The colonialist power fantasy is enticing because it is, like most power fantasies, ultimately about control, and in this case, giving control to the player in a way that simulates struggle and dominance over “untamed” lands.
🍀 Yes, in games people do enjoy dominance. No, that does not mean it’s a colonialist fantasy. It would be akin to me saying that bread it made of flour as cake is, ergo my loaf of bread is cake. You’re mixing it up harder than a game of Marvel here, dear author.
>  The game’s colonialist framing ultimately bothers me the most when it pushes towards the extremes, when one capture or kill quest becomes dozens upon dozens, an endless parade of half-hearted justifications to go have awesome fights against monsters.
🍀 You’re right in that there’s dozens so I’ll give you that. It’s not endless and generally not half-hearted. Let’s look at the MonHun “justifications”:
“Hey, please catch/kill Tigrex. It’s eating all the Popos which are important for all predators.”
“Hey, please catch/kill Jinouga, it’s come too close to the village and is threatening us all.”
“Hey, uh, I don’t know how to tell you this but Shagaru Magala is driving everything to extinction. Might wanna kill that one and save the world.”
Wow, they’re such “half-baked justifications”. Generally speaking, MonHun doesn’t do what that one NPC in Maple Story does: Demand genocide because a monster (mushroom) spooked them. And it’s actually a very, very realistic thing. People hunt bears that have wandered too close to human civilization and have no fear of us because bears, for all their cuddlyness, are at the end of the day dangerous.
There are people who raise bears and they’ll be the first to tell you that “it’s still a bear. They’re still dangerous and you have to respect that”.
Now take the fact that they’re dangerous, magnify it and replace it with something like Jinouga, a lightning spouting wolf who’s first instinct when you approach them is to establish it’s dominance. Replace it with Tigrex, who’s first instinct is to charge at you and eat you. Replace it with the devil that is Yian Garuga, who’s first instinct is to beat the living daylights out of you because it can.
I don’t know who the author of this article is. I really don’t care. I’m just very, very disappointed because this piece paints a very different view of what MonHun actually is. At best, it is a misrepresentation caused by incompetence because god knows they must have had a damn editor there and at worst, it’s done for click-baiting or malice.

Trigger warning (decay, depression, death mentions, insect mentions, rotting items and bodies, childhood trauma, memory loss) This one is particularly poetic to me, but it may bring some unpleasant emotion to some. Please scroll if you feel uncomfortable.
Let me deteriorate and decay, bringing down my surroundings as I fall like invasive vines chewed away by invasive beetles brought in to halt its future.
Let me crumble and wither like the rotting real wood foundations of abandoned buildings in the fields; sickly off-white painted walls overcome by ivy and home to undergrowth mammals that only succeed in bringing the ceiling ever closer to splintering and snapping under the pressure of millions of rat footsteps and the weight of soaked-in water.
Return my body to the earth that created me without consent and throw my spirit to the stars it admires. Launch it through the atmosphere like a spaceship set on a course from a false home towards the great beyond where the signal inevitably dies out and let it fall like a beautiful, burning comet into the dust of an unknown world where it never need worry about returning favour to those who crafted and commanded it against it's will.
Allow my vessel to sink beneath soft earth and be reclaimed by that which it once loved as mushrooms and foliage begin to crowd and consume it. Let the creatures I relate to with far more strength than humanity tear off the flesh for sustenance that once fuelled me and let their young feast so that they can grow stronger than I ever was in a world I wasn't ready for.
.
Let my false voice sing poems in the heads of ones who claimed to love me, so they tie a spirit that isn't mine to earth with their memories of a child who isn't me. Allow them to throw any name they wish on a stone slab that is destined to be eroded and forgotten like the human it embodied.
Let the casket below remain bare with nothing but bone; a hollow skull where no pain shall fester again. Hollow bones with wind where marrow once was; wind that carries songs on it sung by voices long forgotten and faded, only legible enough to make you turn your head in confusion as you believe someone may have called for you - in a pitch unable to be understood by the human ear until you become one with the wind yourself.
Life insists that you remain until the plastic fabrics of your infant clothes weather and wear away to threads home only to microorganisms.
Nobody asked what happened if you rotted before your childhood stuffed animal grew mold and mildew - always expecting us to outlive the memories when those memories were what kept us living.
Life insists upon a lot. Life insists upon death. A cycle never-ending but a cycle we try to halt as though we, as sentient and conscious beings, insist upon the authority of life that we are the authority of ourselves. Life rewards our pathetic efforts with death - removes the beauty of the world until we see how bare we have crafted it to be.
For her struggles, life can reclaim my vacant, unappreciated vessel.

Dark Souls 3 The Ringed City DLC - Guide Part 1 (Dreg Heap)
Even the wisest of Ashen Ones needs a little Dark Souls 3 guidance now and then. So, if you’re struggling with gatling laser angel creatures, or lost amongst the windmills of The Ringed City’s Dreg Heap, this guide should be able to help you out.
Part One covers the entrance to The Ringed City DLC to the Dreg Heap boss. It’ll help with directions, enemy types, items (mostly – I doubt I found every single thing), bonfire locations, and offer a few boss tips. The rest will follow in Part Two, once I’ve explored a few more nooks and crannies, and written the thing up.
I played through with a melee-focused Dex (Estoc and shield) character, at around level 90. The pre-release blurb suggested level 125 for this DLC, which to me seems rather excessive. Any end game level character of 80-100 should do fine.
How to Enter The Ringed City DLC
You’ve got two options. If you own Ashes of Ariandel and have defeated Sister Friede (and Ariandel), go and talk to the painting girl in the attic and then return to the boss room. There should be a new bonfire there from which to warp to the Dreg Heap.
Here’s the one at Kiln, with the original in the background.
If you don’t own Ashes of Ariandel, or haven’t beaten Friede, or just fancy being different, travel to the Kiln of the First Flame (yep, the very end of the game). Turn around and look down the hill a bit and you should see a new bonfire a few feet away from where you warp in. That’ll take you to the same place as the one in Ashes.
Down in the Dregs
Welcome to the Dreg Heap. Enjoy your stay. Have a chat to the Pilgrim Lady before you follow the developer message and drop off the ledge. She’ll tell you a few things, and sell you stuff – including the Splitleaf Greatsword if you fancy such a weapon. You can return here once you reach the Ringed City itself for some new dialogue. At some point (probably once you’ve triggered the final boss fight), she’ll die. You can then get her ashes and give them to the Handmaiden at Firelink; who will promptly accuse you of murder.
Anyway, dropping down from the ledge will get you attacked by many crawling horrors known as Murkmen. Plus a couple of caster Murkmen who’ll shoot magic at you. The standard Murkmen aren’t too bad – but they do hit fairly hard if they catch you. Casters are fairly standard, but some of them have a weird attack where they turn into a sort of sentient cloud (which looks like a larger version of the mini Humanity creatures from the first Dark Souls Artorias DLC) and launch themselves in your face.
Take a left and up some stairs to face a fatty with no face who you’ll later learn is a Harald Knight. He’s guarding a Titanite Chunk and (up the stairs again), the Aquamarine Dagger.
Someone call Troy Tempest, because I just found Aqua Marina.
Go back the other way and approach the tempting item on the exposed ledge which totally isn’t a tra … oh dear, you fell down.
Now you’re in a ruined library area with more Murkmen. At least one of the casters in here will do the evil cloud trick at you. More regular Murkmen will appear periodically too. Go up the library stepladder and over into the enclosed area to get the Murky Hand Scythe.
Leave by the only exit to meet what will probably be your most awkward nemesis in this first area: the Laser Angel creature. I have no idea what these are officially called (maybe they’re super evolved Pilgrim Butterflies?), so Laser Angel will have to do. They’re always mad as hell and, when they see you, will gatling cannon laser fire at you. You can permanently kill them, but for now there’s some useful cover to cower behind just after the drop (and a Divine Blessing item).
Run and hide behind the house, but watch out for the lone Murkman who’ll try to drag you down. If you follow the wooden platforms around the side of the building, you’ll find the Ring of Steel Protection +3 … and probably die while retrieving it. So you may want to hold off on that one for a bit.
Don’t be like me, stay away from Murkman grabs.
If you go through the other entrance, you’ll find a pair of Lothric Knights, guarding the Soul of a Crestfallen Knight. Dispatch them and continue on through another entrance to wind up by a fountain. If you head to the right, beyond the fountain, you’ll find some rooms full of (apparently) endless Murkmen. In the final room there’s a Murky Longstaff to claim.
Opt to go the other way at the fountain and you’ll head towards the gaze of the Laser Angel again. You’ll notice that a tower has collapsed too.
Instead of heading onward, turn back to the room the Knights were in. It now has a missing wall and a route for you to take across the newly fallen tower.
From this vantage point you’ll be able to see a weird creature in the courtyard below. This is the Laser Angel’s dirty little secret, and weakness. Pump it full of arrows, or spells (or go down there yourself if you have to) to make the flying terror disappear from this area. Hurrah! Then go across the tower and chat with a chap named Lapp.
After that you can continue onward to a point where you can do a devastating drop attack on a hapless Harald Knight, or make your way back to the point where the tower fell.
There used to be a wall here.
Either way you’ll end up in another gauntlet of Murkmen and ultimately find another cliff edge to drop off. A developer message assures you that you won’t die, and, despite the very long fall, this proves to be the case.
Dead ahead you’ll see the Ruined Earthen Peak bonfire. Wait a second … Earthen Peak? Yep, we’re in Dark Souls 2 territory. Sort of.
Earthy Peaks and Windmills
If you talked to Lapp earlier, he’ll be here now. He’s squatting (hmm, suspicious) on a little outcrop of rock to the right of the bonfire (as you look at it from where you dropped down). He’ll talk to you about some exciting treasure in an upcoming swamp.
Up and to the left you’ll find some Back Firebombs guarded by those familiar Dark Souls mushroom insect creatures.
Everywhere else in the immediate area is guarded by another Laser Angel. Duck in and out of the scenery to avoid his gaze as much as possible. You can stealth around to some extent when his back is turned, but it’s not an exact science.
To make things easier for yourself, it’s probably best to go after the thing projecting this Laser Angel. Assuming you’ve approached the area with several shacks on the main pathway, you’re probably hiding behind a wall right now. Dash to the hut in the center, then wait for the Laser Angel to get distracted shooting at the poor Thralls. Follow the one which survives into the hut/cave place, and kill him.
This is the one you want to be heading towards (drop off to the left side).
From here, you need to make it to the shack that’s out on the edge of the cliff (on the right). When you reach it, hug the left hand wall as closely as possible and walk off the ledge. You should just land on a tree branch below. If you miss it, you should at least get a decent idea of what you’re aiming for now.
And this is the prick you want to be brutally assaulting.
Walk along the branch and you’ll find the bizarre creature that projects the Laser Angel. Murder the hell out of it to get that other Laser Angel out of your life. From here, progressing further up the tree branch will ultimately lead you above the hut/cave you were in with the Thrall, and to a developer message encouraging you to drop off a ledge again. That’s actually a direct route to the Within Earthen Peak bonfire and the area boss, if you want to head there right away.
If not, head back to the now much safer area with all the shacks. In this part of the level you can find the Desert Pyromancy Garb by one of the left-hand huts. There’s also the Giant Door Shield down a cliffside pathway near the hut you dropped off to reach the Laser Angel’s creature. Watch out for a sword Thrall in a little alcove there.
You need 45 Strength to use it, but it looks fun.
Next, go through that hut/cave area and towards yet another lovely Dark Souls 3 swamp. Mm, poisonalicious! Around this place you’ll find the other parts of the Desert Pyromancy set (skirt, gloves, etc). In the lower part of the swamp you can also find the Ring of Favor +3 and (in a cave guarded by mushroom insects and a pair of Harald Knights) a Titanite Slab.
If you miss the latter item, Lapp will retrieve it for you at some point (I’m not sure what the trigger for that is, but if he’s moved from his first spot at the bonfire to be closer to you then have a chat with him).
Problem is, there’s another Laser Angel in this area, making item retrieval a pain in the arse. This one’s avatar creature thing is on top of the windmill in the far corner (as you look out from the way you probably entered) of the swamp. Your route up is going to be a tree branch that starts near the base of the windmill.
Getting there is not easy when the Laser Angel is interested in you. Your best bet is to try to hug cover and either work around the left-hand fringe of the swamp, or get to the cave with the pair of Harald Knights and then work your way closer from that side instead. There’s honestly a bit of luck to the whole thing, so prepare to just die at least once or twice.
HIT ME WITH THOSE LASER BEAMS. Actually, on second thoughts, please don’t.
Once you manage to reach the branch at the base of the windmill follow it up until you reach (and kill) the Thrall with the deep infused sword. Turn around, kill another Thrall, and make your way across the rooftops to the next upward curving branch. You should find the avatar creature there. Once that’s dead, exploring this whole area is a lot more straightforward.
Around the back of the windmill, at the ground level, you’ll find a Harald Knight guarding the Harald Curved Greatsword.
If you go back up the branch walkway to where the Thrall with the deep infused sword is/was, you’ll find Desert Pyromancer Zoey and her two Thrall buddies. Separate the Thralls off from her before attempting an assault. She has fireballs, a fire fan attack, and a nasty whip. She’ll also use Estus flasks twice before she’s out. Kill her, and you’ll get the Flame Fan pyromancy.
In reality I ran away and shot her with arrows. Sorry Zoey.
To make it to the next bonfire from here, just follow the branches until you can drop down to the point you’ve probably already reached when killing off the first Laser Angel. Take the long drop, and you’ll be at the Within Earthen Peak bonfire.
Demon Pals
From here you can drop inside a large hollowed out tree to meet the Demon in Pain and Demon from Below. They are delightful fellows. Beside the bonfire you can summon Amnesiac Lapp and Slave Knight Gael if you want some AI help. Other co-op players are, of course, also an option.
Somewhat fun fact: the Demon in Pain used to be called ‘Crimson Bat’ in early translations. Anyway, these guys will both attack at once and take it in turns to be powered up by flame (they can briefly both be powered up sometimes, but it doesn’t tend to last long before one flares out).
Whichever happens to be the flamed up guy of the moment will always be more aggressive, while the other one will hang back and spit toxic stuff at you.
Not pictured: the other one, about to slap me around.
This first phase (yep) is much, much simpler with a helpful buddy. Either a co-op summon, or one of the NPCs (Slave Knight Gael, Amnesiac Lapp). Of the two, Gael seems better at holding his own. With a friend, you only have to concentrate one one demon, which is pretty easy.
They only really attack from the front, so if you stay around the back legs or rear you’ll be pretty fine. Just watch out for when they hop back and try to put some distance between you (close the distance and dodge any incoming slashes).
If you do want to take them on solo, then the same advice applies but you’ll have to contend with juggling the pair of them. That’s mostly a case of dodging the extra toxic stuff that’s coming your way from whichever one is currently in that mode. Not exactly simple. Try to keep them somewhat separate as much as you can because the toxic spitting one will slash at you if it gets in close.
There isn’t really any ‘trick’ to this phase (unless you count co-op as a trick). Just good old fashioned move-set learning. Again, as long as you’re around the back or side of one they can’t do much. If you hit either one enough that they slump to the floor, you can stab them in the face (riposte) for a lot of damage.
When you kill the last of Demon in Pain or Demon from Below (whichever one is alive the longest), they’ll turn into the Demon Prince. He’s a bigger, badder version of the other demon lads and has an expanded move-set.
Show off.
If he takes to the air, he’s either going to lob a fireball at you, or do a low straight swoop with a trail of fire, or retreat to the back of the arena. If he does the latter, he’s either going to summon a portal of fireballs (fun!) or do a laser fire beam of death at you.
You can avoid the second one by just being out of range (at least for the general sweep, dodge the second part as that’s aimed right at you). The portal of suns is … a problem. I never really figured out how to dodge that one consistently. I think keeping your cool and trying to dodge late might work?
Good windows for attack on this guy are after he does the classic Dark Souls ‘bellyflop’ move, or (like with the prior demons), if you can get around the back legs, tail or rear when he’s slashing at you on the ground. He only seems to have one rear protection move which sometimes comes out at the end of his moving ground pound combo (he’ll spin and slam his left fist down). If you can reach him when he’s standing still summoning portals or fire-beams, then that’s good for a couple of stabs too (just get out of the way of any fireballs that might be appearing soon).
I tried this boss both solo and with NPCs, and had most consistent success taking just Gael (this was pre-release, so no online co-op was available). He made phase one a breeze, and tended to survive at least halfway-to-two-thirds into the Demon Prince fight. That distraction is very useful.
I’m not sure if elemental damage will help much here. Fire, for obvious reasons, definitely does not. I was using Bleed, which may have helped a bit, but I didn’t notice dramatic effects. Frost magic or weapons would probably be worth a go, given the nature of these bosses.
Like the other demons, you can go for a riposte face-stab on the Demon Prince if you ever deal enough damage in a row to make him slump over (this can be a godsend if you manage to do it while he’s summoning his sun portal or fire orbs, because it sometimes knock him out of that attack).
The gargoyle taxi service to The Ringed City have very specific ID requirements.
Your reward for triumph will be the Soul of the Demon Prince, which you can convert into either the Seething Chaos pyromancy, or a curved sword (which has Faith/Magic requirements) called Demon’s Scar. Fancy.
From the Demon Prince bonfire that appears after the fight, you’ll be able to pick up the Small Envoy Banner. Use it on the cliff edge to be carried away to a wonderful world of adventure in The Ringed City itself. We’ll get to all of that in Part Two …
