Steve Rogers Fanfiction Recommendations
Happy birthday, Steve!
I know that there are some (a lot?) of steve fans who sometimes struggle to find fics focused on him, so I am here now putting a list of Steve fics. I was going to fics that I haven't seen recommended a lot and most of the ones on this post have less than 200 kudos only, but I end up putting everything (it's probably easier to put my bookmarks as public but well...). It's a massive list (over 100 fics?), so it's will be separated into several posts/reblogs.
Not all of them are from Steve's POV or even have him as the main 'main' character, but rest assured he played an important role and is featured heavily. Lots of these are friendship-focused but I categorized them. The shippy ones are mostly samsteve, thundershield, and some rare pairings because I don't venture to other ships a lot and when I did it's to the rare ones instead lol. Hopefully, any of you can find some gems from this list and these are as enjoyable or as good as I remembered. I'll continue to update it, hopefully, every time I find new ones.

Realization clicked in Sam's head.
"The gas de-serumed you."
Steve swallowed and nodded reluctantly.
OR: Steve gets temporarily de-serumed, with his height and stature staying the same but his immune system being as bad as it was before, and has to stay in the hospital to prevent a severe allergic reaction or illness. Sam stays with him the whole time, making sure he's not alone.

Written for a prompt on avengerkink: I want to see something where, for whatever reason, Steve's accelerated healing turns out to be a bad thing. Something where the faster healing is making things worse. I would prefer something other than the standard, super-healing allows for more torture without death. “He's lucky – to have the serum, to have you all.” Tony wasn't sure about that first part. When one faced death and destruction every day on the job, there were many advantages to having a healing factor...and a great many disadvantages as well.

“You didn’t,” Bucky said, with no real hope of being contradicted. Clint shrugged helplessly and passed him the large, soft bundle wrapped in shiny purple foil.
“Sorry.” Tony covered his eyes with one hand.

“So,” Bruce said wearily, “counting Clint, me, Bucky, Tony, and Sam, that brings it up to five.”
“Excuse you, mine’s not a blanket,” Sam said. “Mine’s a slanket. Big difference.”
Bucky resisted the urge to throw the whole heap of parcels at Sam’s head. “Because it has sleeves? It’s still a blanket, Wilson. They’re all blankets. Even Thor’s direct-from-Asgard raven gift delivery was a cloak, which just means it’s a blanket with a strap. We all got Steve a goddamn blanket.”

Written for a prompt at avengerkink: Because really, under any other circumstances, why would they follow him when he's some guy who's younger than the rest of them (time as a Capsicle aside), who goes around wearing that spangly outfit, who's not even used to the modern world? Why Steve Rogers, rather than a Norse god or the CEO of Stark Industries or anyone else?

Now Starring
Sam wasn’t supposed to be this still, this quiet, this broken. Speaking as the man who taught him how to walk, Dean could say with certainty that his kid brother had barely stopped moving once he had found his land legs. Ever since he had managed that first word, “De!”, he only stopped speaking and asking questions when he was asleep, but even then the kid had developed a nasty habit of talking in his sleep. Sam had always grumbled and turned red when Dean called him out on it, but Dean had never really minded the noise. Knowing that his brother was there, even in sleep, was like a blessing to a kid who had gone one too many sleepless nights trying to protect his kid brother from all the darkness that was outside of their motel room. The absence of that voice had taken some getting used to.
It was the silence that was the worst. After Dad had gone off in his truck a couple of weeks after Sam had gone off to Stanford (“We can cover more ground if we split up, Dean.”), the Impala had been too quiet, even with her rumbly engine and steady stream of classic rock. Sam had always been asking questions or complaining about having to move to another state, again. He had always been shifting those gigantic limbs of his, trying to get comfortable. When he had, his steady breathing had always been there, like white noise soothing Dean’s stressed mind. Not having it there had kept him up at night. The room was too quiet, the car was too quiet, the girl sleeping next to him was breathing too loud.
Dean watched his listless brother as he stood next to Mr. Moore, solemnly greeting the long line of mourners who had turned up to cry over “the dead girl from Stanford”. The kid looked like he was barely standing on his own two feet, and he was only speaking when spoken to.
It was driving Dean nuts. He didn’t know where to even begin with fixing his brother, and that scared him. Four years apart meant that there were a few more pages to the Book of Sam that he was unfamiliar with, and Sam seemed to be trying to keep it that way. Dean got it, he did. Being a closed book was helpful for situations like this, when you were trying to keep the world from seeing the shattered remains of your heart. But Dean needed to read those pages to be able to start fixing his brother. He didn’t know if chicken soup was still Sam’s go-to when he was feeling crappy, or how many shots of whiskey would make him pass out cold for the night.
Dean was the big brother. He was supposed to know this stuff about his younger brother. He was supposed to be able to help, and yet, gazing around the large reception hall that Jessica’s wake was being held at, he had never felt more useless than he did at that moment. He was completely out of his depth.
Surprisingly, it was the first funeral that Dean had been to since he was 4. But honestly? He didn’t count his Mom’s funeral because he couldn’t remember much of it. All he could really remember was sitting on a stone bench with Baby Sammy in his arms, and growling at all the nosy neighbours who tried to touch his brother. It didn’t matter to him who it was. The Pastor, his kindergarten teacher, especially Ms. Chancey, that mean old hag. They came within 50 feet of his baby brother, they got growled at.
The instinct hadn’t left him, even if it was 22 years later. He was surrounded by people he didn’t know and couldn’t care less about, save for one. Other Stanford students, professors, and Jessica’s relatives milled around him, and whenever they came too close to Sam, or tried to put a hand on his shoulder, Dean felt like growling at him. He actually did growl at that Brady kid, but he did it low enough so that Sam couldn’t hear. There was just something about that guy that gave him the creeps. He had to constantly remind himself that he only hunted monsters, and that humans were off limits, no matter how douchy they seemed.
Dean picked up a cracker and nibbled on it. Dean was pretty sure that at least half the people milling about had no idea who they were supposed to be mourning, and those were the ones that he wanted to growl at the most, because they were the ones giving the “At least she’s in a better place” speeches to his brother.
“Friggin’ cattle,” he scoffed, tossing three-quarters of his cracker into the trash bin.
“It’s so sad, isn’t it?” Dean turned to look at the girl standing next to him. She was pretty, wearing a black dress that contrasted with her pale skin. She was dabbing at her eyes with a tissue, though it wasn’t doing much good as her tears were still streaming down her face. Dean grunted non-committedly, keeping the corner of his eye on Sam. “I’m Lin; Jessica was my roommate before she moved in with her boyfriend. How did you know Jess?”
Dean paused, considering lying just to get rid of this chick. If it had been any other day, he would have been all for taking her home and making her forget for a little while, but he wasn’t playing Dean the Philandering Hunter today. No, today Dean Winchester was starring in the role of Big Brother Dean, and he needed to put 110 percent into it. Sammy needed him, and it wasn’t like last time. He couldn’t just bundle his little brother up in his arms and run into the woods surrounding the cemetery like he had when Dad’s second cousin or whatever had tried to pluck the kid out of his protector’s arms. The kid needed him to be present, to protect him when the emotions of the day got to be too much, and to tell Brady the Douchebag to hit the road when he had tried to give the whole “Time heals all wounds” speech.
In the end, Big Brother Dean figured it would be easier to tell the truth. “I didn’t.”
Lin stared at him, tears coming to a halt as she glowered up at him. “Then what the hell are you doing here? You know, you people are leeches! Jessica’s family and friends are going through hell right now, and you’re here because you think you had some connection to her because you go to the same school! They—we—don’t need you here, bearing false platitudes about how time heals all wounds, or she’s in a better place! You make me sick! You couldn’t even dress up a little, to make it look like you actually give a damn about her! She wouldn’t want you here! Jessica—”
“Dean?” The quiet, tearful, near-whimpering voice cut through the ex-roommate’s tirade like a knife, and Dean whirled his head around to see Sam coming towards him, looking like he had been KO’d twice but was still trying to fight.
“Yeah, buddy? What is it?” Dean’s concern leaked into his voice, successfully shutting Lin up.
“Can we—” Sam coughed as he tried to keep his tears at bay. “Can we go back to the motel please? I don’t think I can handle any more of this today.”
Dean wrapped his arm around Sam’s shoulders. Sam practically sagged into his brother, allowing him to take most of his weight while still appearing to be supporting himself on his own two feet.
“Yeah Sammy, we can go,” Dean replied quietly, completely aware that Lin was watching them. “Is there anybody you want to say goodbye to before we leave?” Sam shook his head morosely, and Dean mentally grimaced. He had never seen the kid so worn out, and he was desperate to do anything that could possibly bring even a fraction of a smile to Sam’s face.
“Okay. Nice meeting you,” he growled at Lin as he led Sam out the front door into the bright sunlight. He stood slightly in front of Sam so that it looked like Sam was exiting without assistance, but also so that he could elbow people out of the way.
He would be whatever Sam needed him to be. He would be a crutch, he would force feed him junk food, and would pour an entire bottle of whiskey down his throat to get him to sleep. He would be a shoulder to cry on, and soothe the nightmares that were sure to come. It wasn’t enough, but it was a start. And Dean wouldn’t give up, because he was a big brother and this is the role he was born to play.

Sorry for being so late with answering the asks! I’ve just haven’t had the chance to get on my laptop..
Disbelief and flabbergasted. At first, she’d be like ‘Um..so..who’s the father?’ because the notion up to that point was that vampire-human conception was impossible since you know, one is undead and one is alive. Then as realisation sink in, writes a profusely apologetic letter saying how sorry she was joking she got married because she’s pregnant and it came true.
Similar asks:
Most likely they’ll insure she’s safe by their standard and distrustful of others, especially of the Cullens. I imagine they’d actually try to get her far away from Seattle and Forks and relocate her somewhere for awhile.
My backstory of that is that Caius wasn’t actually there but heard stories of a man who performed miracles which did piqued his interest. He tried to find this man to see the miracles himself only to hear later on that the man was sentenced to death by crucifixion. From then on, he suspected this miracle man whom called himself son of God might have some truth in it or else those in power wouldn’t have felt so threatened to sentence him with one of most painful and humiliating mode of death at the time (as I’ve mentioned before, I imagine Caius was born into a political family so was aware of the power plays).
Crucifixion was a common punishment Crucifixion was quite common in the Roman world as well as Mediterranean/North Africa/Middle East until it was banned by Constantine I out of respect for the death of Jesus Christ. The surest way to get yourself crucified was to betray or subvert the Roman state coupled with how Caius was brought up as human in ancient Greek (at the time, while it was foundational for both national identity and civic institutions, and an important ideological hook to hang all sorts of ideas on, religion didn't usually play a very big role in everyday life) then his growth as vampire, interested but that went away when the man died before Caius could meet him. It wasn’t until many years past that he became interested in religion and still regret not being able to meet Jesus.

Ah ha! I actually haven’t thought about that! I know she’s born in 1988 in Texas...hmmm any date you want Jessica’s birthday to be? Anyone? Please drop it in my asks! I’d definitely am with the idea of Jessica celebrating her birthday in Volterra.
Not only with Jessica but some of it yes, there’s part of him that wishes Jane could form a meaningful bond with someone whom he likes. I portrayed it as instinctual response born from the past when as humans, they were feared and hated by the villagers which consequentially resulted in him and Jane burned at the stake. There’s nothing more he fears than his sister experiencing that all over again.
You know how when someone say ‘hmm there’s something..something’s changed but I can’t exactly describe what’ that’s what Jessica’s mum will think. When you become more mature and grow up psychologically, lots of people seemed to notice the change of aura, it could be their facial expression, tone of voice, wordings, manners, something subtle that hints you underwent something that made you grow mentally and in a good way. That.

Daredevil Season 3 Easter Eggs And References
I somehow managed to watch the full season in about a week. Probably because I actually had a day off of work in there. These season of Daredevil borrows heavily from two very famous comic book arcs, “Born Again,” and “Guardian Devil.” If you’re familiar with the comics, you probably saw a few things coming. That being said, there aren’t a huge amount of Easter eggs in the season.
As usual, the Easter eggs are broken down by episode so if you want to read as you go without being spoiled for future episodes, you can. This is spoiler-heavy though, so if you’re trying to steer clear and haven’t watched the season yet, look away. I’ll understand.
I didn’t spend a lot of time explaining who people are if they’ve appeared in the show before, maybe just a reminder here and there in case they didn’t make a huge impression on you.
So, onto the Easter eggs!
S3E01 “Resurrection”
Father Lantom
I’m sure we all remember him from earlier seasons, but this is just a reminder of his role in the comics. In the comics, he also provides a place of refuge for Cloak And Dagger as well as the Runaways. Taking in heroes with sad backstories is kind of his thing.
St. Agnes
Again, sure everyone recognizes it, but also just a reminder that on Agents of SHIELD, the orphanage where Daisy Johnson AKA Skye AKA Mary Sue Poots spent her youth was also called St. Agnes. I’d still love a connection.
The Timeline
Despite Matt waking up and seemingly thinking he just made it out of a collapsed building, it’s actually been “several weeks,” which probably puts this happening right around the same time as the events of the most recent season of Luke Cage or Iron Fist. More episodes will likely clear this up.
Sister Maggie
She is a comic book character, plucked from the pages of the “Born Again” story arc. There’s likely a big reveal coming with Sister Maggie, so I won’t spoil that for you. She also features prominently in the “Guardian Devil” story arc.
Ben Donovan
This lawyer certainly gets around. Taking care of Wilson Fisk still even though he was devoting so much time to Mariah Dillard over on Luke Cage.
Fisk And The Wall
After he gets bad news, he stares at the white wall of his prison cell. You’ll remember in season one, he liked “White Rabbit In A Snowstorm” because it helped him think. It’s also how he was forced to deal with his father abusing his mother.
Rymon Cable
The van that has bad guys Matt decides to test himself against? It’s full of clothes even though it has the Rymon Cable logo on it. There’s no comic book connection to Rymon, but Holly S. Rymon is a “production executive” on the series. She’s also worked on Iron Fist, Luke Cage, Jessica Jones, and The Punisher over the last two years.
S3E02 “Please”
Fisk’s Deal
This deal isn’t unlike ones he’s made in the comics to further his own ends. During “Civil War” he actually passes information about Captain America to Iron Man, which briefly makes him a target for other criminals. He tries to get his stature back by putting a hit out on Spider-Man and his family, which backfires when Spider-Man shows up in prison and beats him to a pulp.
Karen’s Backstory
In the comics, she’s an only child, but she does have darker and darker side stories. She becomes a drug addict and a prostitute at one point, so I’m curious to see how much the writers reveal of her dark backstory here.
Blackout Cripples NY
This headline appears on a new newspaper clipping on the wall in Karen’s Bulletin office. Now, all of the other clippings were there before the office belonged to her, courtesy of Ben Urich. That means this new headline is likely one of her stories. That story is likely in response to the blackouts that happened all over the world in Agents of SHIELD season four when a hate group was making a statement about Inhumans.
Blake Tower
You all remember Blake Tower, right? He’s been showing up on multiple shows, just like Ben Donovan, Claire Temple, and Turk Barrett.
“Hell’s Kitchen is ground zero for vigilantes…”
Foggy’s not wrong. Daredevil, Iron Fist, Jessica Jones, and Luke Cage have all been around in the last few years. Iron Fist promised to protect Hell’s Kitchen, but the events of his last season changed things up a bit.
S3E03 “No Good Deed”
Kingpin’s White/Grey/Lavender Penthouse
The color scheme for Wilson Fisk’s room is very reminiscent of his clothing choices in the comics.
The Presidential Hotel
Was it just me who noticed the hotel, combined with the “Lock Fisk up,” the fake news comments, and the fact that the owner was convicted of fraud? I think those are a lot of real world shoutouts right there, and I appreciate every single one of them.
Fisk’s White Suit
Matt might be hallucinating Fisk, but this is Kingpin’s comic book look. It’s perfect.
Millar
I couldn’t make out the second name of the electrical/plumbing company Matt sneaks into the hotel with, but the first in the logo is definitely Millar. Frank Miller is typically the name associated with Daredevil, but I feel like Millar is a shoutout to comic book creator Mark Millar. He’s better known for the Kick-Ass franchise and his work for DC, but he’s also written on some X-Men books, some Fantastic Four, and some Spider-Man, as well as the “Civil War” arc.
Vanessa Hiding In Spain
Vanessa frequently has to hide out in the comics to escape the wrath of Wilson’s enemies. Spain isn’t usually a big spot for her, but Wilson lived there for about a year in the comics before Lady Bullseye caught up with him and sent a bunch of Hand ninjas after him.
Agent Poindexter
He seems to like the nickname Dex and he has a great skillset - never missing his mark. Benjamin Poindexter is the main alias of a villain named Bullseye in the comics, and I don’t think that’s spoiling anything for you since casting rumors and trailers should have done that already. He’s probably Daredevil’s biggest enemy, not Kingpin. So, that’s going to be fun to watch develop.
Matt’s Clothes
Not his vigilante ensemble, which is a callback to him first starting out in season one. His walking around clothes. It looks a lot like how Stick used to dress when he was in New York, huh? Guess Matt is taking cues from his former sensei.
Matt Picking Foggy’s Pocket
Okay, so I realize this is just a means to an end for Matt, but I like to think of it as another connection between Matt and Daisy. Both orphans at St. Agnes (possibly the same one), both steal the ID of someone who meets with them in order to get more info. (In Daisy AKA Skye’s case, it was Mike Peterson in the Agents of SHIELD pilot.)
S3E04 “Blindsided”
District Attorney Foggy Nelson
Foggy was District Attorney of New York City for a while in the comics. He also became Chief of Staff for the mayor for a while too.
The Prison Fight Sequence
Less an Easter egg and more a reminder that Daredevil is known for doing a spectacular single take fight sequence every season. This one, where the cameraman literally just followed Charlie Cox from room to room lasted nearly a crazy 15 minutes. No cuts. That’s impressive.
“We were just being friendly.”
And Karen pulls a gun on some guys up to no good. I feel like she and Jessica Jones need to hang out more. They could just intimidate skeevey guys in alleys for laughs.
Trucks Full Of Chemicals
The FBI agent’s story about her dad hauling chemicals, I think, made a nice nod to the fact that both Matt Murdock and Jessica Jones got their abilities from trucks full of chemicals hitting them in the comics.
Felix Manning
“Felix” has been the name of the person in charge of Vanessa’s location, so I’m going to wager they’re one in the same. He also appears in a whopping two comic books - Daredevil issues 230 and 231. He wanted Melvin Potter, who appeared early in the Netflix series, to make him a duplicate of the Daredevil costume. He was actually killed by a Daredevil imposter. Foreshadowing? We’ll see.
A Taxi To The Water
A version of this happened in “Born Again.” It didn’t get rid of Matt, but it did make him a little more loopy.
S3E05 “The Perfect Game”
Fisk Giving Matt’s Name
There is a story in the comics where Fisk implicates Matt as a vigilante and gets him arrested. The FBI, however, decides not to take the deal with him, and they put Fisk in prison for numerous crimes as well. This clearly isn’t playing out exactly the same way, but, when Matt and Fisk try to break out of prison during a riot, it’s Bullseye who has to save them. I can’t help but wonder if there was a little inspiration there.
Felix Threatens Karen
Again, a little hint of her backstory here. In the comics, she’s also from the New England area. Her father, Paxton Page, who gets namechecked in the threat, actually became a villain named Death’s Head in the comics.
Baseball And Bullseye
Cute that little Dex has a bullseye on his baseball cap in his childhood. Funnily enough, comic book villain Bullseye claims to have attempted to become a major league baseball player, but he got bored pitching a no hitter and threw the ball at the final hitter to kill him in a minor league game. Killing his coach when he pulls him from the game is a bit of a twist on that.
S3E06 “The Devil You Know”
Matt Doesn’t Take Karen’s Coffee
Luke Cage’s “coffee” has ruined he drink for everyone. Karen offering Matt a cup when he comes to her for help, and Matt refusing could be a sign that anything romantic between them is officially over. Or it means nothing. Who knows?
Karen Is Way Too Comfortable In A Drug Den
Karen is around drugs a lot this season. A lot. And it all seems to give a nod to her comic book story, but I feel like we’re inching toward more of her family backstory with just how comfortable she is buying drugs and making her way around other addicts.
“Maybe I’ll get lucky and they’ll lock me up next to Fisk.”
This did actually happen in the comics, as I’ve mentioned before. It’s a nice nod.
Felix Manning Getting Dex The Suit
Likewise, I also mentioned Felix being the one to get a copy of a Daredevil suit in the comics. Looks like his appearance was some foreshadowing after all.
Dex As Daredevil
Bullseye has actually dressed up as Daredevil in the comics as well. He’s not the only one. So has Foggy.
Karen Between Bullseye And A Victim
If Karen stepping between Dex and the witness gave you pause, it’s probably because you know how she loses her life in the comics. She gets between Bullseye and Matt in a fight, taking a lethal blow to save Matt’s life. This imagery is not going to be fun for Karen fans.
Side note: I’ve never really been a Karen Page fan because the comics put her firmly in the slot of victim. She never really outgrows that no matter who writes for her. But I love her this season. Maybe it’s because we got to see more of Karen being Karen than of trying to fill someone else’s shoes.
S3E07 “Aftermath”
The Hidden Room
Kingpin officially has a supervillain lair. Less of an Easter egg here and more of it being about time.
WJPBTV, WNEX, WHiH, etc
All of the news networks Fisk sees the Bulletin carnage on exist within the MCU already. WJPB is the news station most often seen in Luke Cage. WNEX is the station that aired Trish Talk. WHiH is the one most often seen in the movies. You get the idea.
Melvin Potter
AKA Gladiator in the comics is something of a gentle giant. He kind of fell into a life of crime, which is largely what Daredevil has done with him in the show as well. The shirt he’s wearing when Matt confronts him is a nod to his comic book costume. So are the saw blades. His girlfriend Betsy was, I believe, a social worker in the comics, not a parole officer. (BTW, the comic that features Matt, Fisk, and Bullseye breaking out of prison during a riot? Melvin’s in prison at the same time as well. Matt advises him to stay in his cell so he doesn’t get hurt.)
S3E08 “Upstairs/Downstairs”
Keys
As Karen nears the front door of her apartment, there’s a piece of paper from a legal pad that says “KEYS.” I love that she’s so focused on her work that she has likely forgotten to take her keys with her enough that it warrants a giant reminder.
Fisk’s Plan
His plan, of putting himself in charge of the criminal groups, is essentially what he wanted in season 2 as well when he gave Frank Castle a means to escape prison.
The Maggia
This is the first time the Italian-American version of the mafia has been mentioned in the present day in the MCU. I say present day because it did have its fingers in Agent Carter season two. In the comics, the Maggia gets the ire of quite a few heroes and antiheroes, but most often, the Punisher.
Sister Maggie
Unless you never read anything related to Daredevil at all, you were probably spoiled at some point that Sister Maggie was really Matt’s mom. People started speculating about the reveal being imminent as soon as there was a “get Maggie” at the end of The Defenders. In the comics, the reveal is a little different as Matt already suspected she was his mother before he found out for sure.
Apartment 131
Dex lives in apartment 131. What comic book did Bullseye make his debut in? Daredevil #131.
S3E09 “Revelations”
Kingpin
Wilson Fisk finally officially gets his codename. I like that we’re back to the season one idea of his lackeys not wanting to name him because someone is always watching/listening.
Karen’s Running
In the comics, Karen basically runs whenever things get hard. I’m kind of surprised she stuck things out this long on the show.
Rosalie Carbone
The woman we see Nadeem take in was last spotted in season two of Luke Cage making a play for Harlem. She’s the one with the Maggia connection. The other names we get are Hammond and Star. The only Hammond I know of in Marvel Comics was the original Human Torch. I’ve got nothing for Star, but the other names could have been picked at random. I don’t recognize the other two people at the table either.
S3E10 “Karen”
Karen Selling Drugs
At least this explains why she’s so comfortable in drug dens. I like that this gives us a nod to her comic book tragedy, but here she’s the seller instead of the addict.
Fagan Corners, Vermont
This is where Karen’s from in the comics as well. The name of the fictional town is an homage to Tom Rutland. Rutland organized an annual Halloween parade in Vermont themed around superheroes. He was actually written into Avengers comics in the 1970s.
Penny’s Place
Named for Karen’s mom in the comics, Penelope.
“... two lines away from doing blow jobs on the street for heroin…”
Maybe this isn’t true on the Netflix show, but yes, this happened in the comics.
Bullseye And Daredevil In The Church
Their in-church fight actually happened in the comics when Matt and Karen were hiding a baby in the church. The big difference here is that when Bullseye aimed a fatal blow at Daredevil with his own billy club, Karen got between them and died from her injury. Father Lantom takes the hit for Karen here.
S3E11 “Reunion”

This is inscribed above the gate to get to the basement where Matt and Karen hide out. From the Latin, in translates to Guardian Devil, one of the comic book arcs the series draws from.
KTTA And ZCN
These are two of the networks I could make out on the mics in front of Fisk when he has a press conference outside of the hotel. KTTA is a television station from the comics that frequently reported on the Thunderbolts. ZCN already exists in the Netflix universe. They offered Trish Walker a job in the second season of Jessica Jones.
Nelson & Murdock: Attorneys At Law
Leave it to Foggy to formally name them as they were named in the comics (and the first season of the show).
Side note: I love the Holocaust survivor standing up to Fisk and refusing to give him her family’s painting. It very much reminds me of the scene in The Avengers when Loki demands everyone kneel, but one man reminds the crowd, “there are always men like you,” and refuses. It’s a great reminder that so many comic book creators, during an era when comics flourished, were Jewish, and their relatives were being persecuted and killed half a world away.

Vanessa Embracing The Kingpin
Not a lot of Easter eggs in this episode that I noticed, but I thought it was important to point out that in the normal timeline of the comics, Vanessa isn’t a part of Wilson’s criminal undertakings. In alternate timelines though, she’s the Kingpin herself. Her embracing his work and wanting to be a part of it feels like the writers are trying to find some middle ground there.
Side note: Some fans pointed out on twitter that the Morales vs Parker poster in Fogwell’s Gym is a nod to the Spider-Man characters of Marvel Comics. I find that unlikely only because there are plenty of boxers who have shared those names. It’s more likely a coincidence, especially since most of the names in previous seasons were nod to production team members and writers.

The Rose
Interesting that Vanessa specifies Fisk should pick the rose. Why? In the comics, Fisk’s son Richard became a vigilante who used the name the Rose. In fact, he wanted to overthrow his father at one point. His mother was the one who killed him. Will Vanessa become the Rose instead? It would be a nice touch.
The Crystals Bounce Off Fisk’s Suit Jacket
In the comics, Fisk actually wears kevlar under his suits to prevent any of his enemies from surprising him with bullets or knives. In the first season, his body armor that he was wearing were designed by Melvin Potter and he wore them under his suits. It seems he might have gotten an upgrade as everything just bounces off of it instead of tearing it, and he gives his jacket to Vanessa to prevent her being hit by anything.
Karen’s More Stable Than Jessica Jones
There are probably a lot of people more stable than Jessica Jones, Matt, jeez. That doesn’t mean she’s not a great detective.
Dex’s Injury And Cognium
In the comics, Bullseye did some time paralyzed. Of course, like all comic book characters, it didn’t last forever. Something else Dex had in the comics? A spine laced with adamantium. Yep, the same stuff on Wolverine’s bones. It’s what made him so indestructible. The MCU probably can’t use it since it’s reserved for the X-Men movies. At least not until everything about the Disney-FOX deal is official.
Dr. Oyama
This doc goes by another name in the comics. Kenji Oyama is Lord Dark Wind. This is the comic book doctor who found a way to make adamantium bond to bone. Wolverine and Bullseye have him to think for their bone structure.
Dex’s Eye
That final shot of Dex’s eye makes what we’ve all been waiting for clear. Dex is definitely officially Bullseye now.
Side note: The milk crates in the freezer with the bodies that have ice all over them? Must have been there for years. I’ve got milk crates used to store product in my freezer at work, and they never build up frost. And our freezer is kept far below zero. Also? I love how much Rosalie Carbone appreciates theatrics. And how Vanessa just wanders around in the background after Fisk repeatedly tells her to leave while there’s a huge fight going on. That’s all.

In Mekong Delta backwaters, Vietnam vets find peace in a town that war destroyed

Most foreign veterans who arrive in this swampy stretch of the Mekong Delta make their way to the Oasis Hotel.
The two-story, pale-yellow building on the Ben Tre River boasts a small pool near the open-air dining area and cold beer. They come looking for solace, something stronger than the support groups and pills. Then they meet Ken Horsfall.
This morning, the scent of roast pork wafted through the hotel. Horsfall, the 71-year-old owner from New Zealand, appeared from the front lawn in his usual attire, a half-buttoned, grease-stained shirt. He’d turned the electricity box into a meat smoker.
Horsfall never fought in Vietnam, or the American War, as it’s known here. But in 2008, he and his wife, Nguyen Thi Lieu, settled in one of the towns most devastated by it. She wanted to trace her past; he wanted a new adventure.
They opened the hotel and welcomed veterans, many of whom traveled to Ben Tre with no illusions of heroics and decades of nightmares. Suddenly Horsfall, who loves telling stories so much he self-published a book of them, became part of this one--a gentle facilitator for the aging men who returned to find peace in a place where they once made war.
“They’ve got to get over here and confront it,” he said. “They lost their youth here.”
Saigon, now called Ho Chi Minh City, fell to Communist troops 42 years ago April 30, marking the end of the conflict. It’s a holiday in Vietnam. Dates like that are not lost on John Foggin, one of the first foreign vets to settle in Ben Tre and try to make sense of his past.
He and his wife, Lan, live down the street from the Oasis. Horsfall popped in the other day on a three-seat bicycle he built from lawn chairs and an electric motor.
“It’s like you have a big hole in your body and it won’t close,” said Foggin, 78. “When I first came back, I was trying to get closure. I can’t explain it. I feel relaxed now.”
He and his wife met when he was stationed in the South; they married before the war’s conclusion.
As North Vietnamese Communist forces took over, Lan, now 70, fled the country with Foggin. Her brother, a supporter of the South Vietnamese, killed himself.
She did not go back for nearly a decade and a half. Now the couple live with her relatives in the spacious soft-pink house they built in the 1990s.
The Foggins have taken to the river town’s pace and feel safer here than in California. They return to San Diego only for insulin and heart medicine.
Surrounded by family and bathed in a river breeze, the Foggins don’t see a reason to leave.
Ben Tre lies about 50 miles south of Ho Chi Minh City, amid a tangle of tributaries. This tropical town became a milestone on the path to war in 1959 when a female Vietcong general led an uprising against Saigon’s American-backed regime.
Nine years later, a battle between U.S. forces and Communist troops leveled half the houses here. The scene forever linked this region to words attributed to an American officer: “It became necessary to destroy the town to save it.”
About 1,000 residents died; the war claimed 2 million Vietnamese and more than 50,000 American soldiers.
Ben Tre today is a city of more than 200,000. Locals sell coconut husks and cargo boats laden with woven baskets and quail eggs ply the river. The outdoor market smells of fish and flowers.
Organizations don’t track the number of veterans who return to live in Vietnam. But thousands of American soldiers have visited since the countries normalized relations in 1995. So have vets from countries such as Australia and New Zealand, who fought alongside South Vietnam.
Some satisfy their desire for cheap beer and female companionship amid the neon lights of Ho Chi Minh City. Others, torn by guilt, start charities to combat the debilitating effects of Agent Orange, a toxic defoliant sprayed by American warplanes. Still more, recently retired and unable to shake a nagging curiosity, visit battlefields on air-conditioned bus tours.
“Vets are driven by a sense of confusion as to why they were there,” said Christina Schwenkel, associate professor of anthropology at UC Riverside. For those who decide to stay, “it allows them not only to witness peace but to participate in the process.”
Years before he returned to Vietnam, Australian veteran Ken Watkins knew he had a problem.
Memories of the war echoed worst at night. His first marriage ended. His second wife told him it was impossible to share a bed. Someone said a trip back would help. A buddy knew a man with a hotel.
He flew here six years ago--to a country he never actually knew, conflicted about his role shaping its history.
Like many afternoons now, Horsfall and Watkins drank Saigon beer on the Dong Khoi patio, a bar across the river in the town center.
Watkins goes by the nickname Cowboy, which fits the former sheep shearer who wears pointed-toe boots and striped shirts with shiny buttons.
He met Hornsfall at the Oasis, where even the name implies refuge. A section for vets on the hotel’s website reads, “we will do our best to help.” Rooms feature a typed history of Vietnam that starts with the French occupation.
“Nearly all the blokes I know were staying at Ken’s at some point,” Watkins said.
“Only because I have somewhere they can stay,” Horsfall said.
Horsfall and Lieu made sure Watkins met a woman named Hanh; they now live in a house with a gazebo. Watkins started paying a share of the school tuition for a local friend’s son. It felt good to help, he said. The nightmares stopped.
“It’s transformed me into a certain type of person,” he said. “I never felt better.”
Horsfall doesn’t take to all the vets who come through.
He winces when he talks about the veteran who didn’t care enough to remember his Vietnamese mother-in-law’s name. He more fondly remembers helping reunite a South Vietnamese man and an American soldier who once worked together.
“It’s the middle of the Caravelle Hotel under the chandeliers,” he said. “There are three American guys coming down the stairs, a foot high over me. I said, ‘Capt. Larry Rhodes, I’d like you to meet your scout. Could you stand up, please?’ The tears start coming.”
He paused.
“That’s a good feeling story,” he said, as usual, leaving it tantalizingly incomplete.
Horsfall was born the year after World War II ended, in a small New Zealand town. He had little formal education, but curiosity and restlessness took him to Papua New Guinea and Cambodia. In his book, he recalls doing nearly 30 jobs, including underwater filmmaker, optical glass fitter, bar owner, and in-country mechanic for the Royal New Zealand Air Force.
In 1993, Horsfall was in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. He went for a haircut at the hair salon Nguyen ran that also sold beer. He was working as a mechanic for the United Nations. Both had previous marriages and children.
They married four years later in New Zealand, where the couple settled for 11 years, until Nguyen decided she should return to her mother’s hometown and meet her relatives. The couple had owned a bar in Cambodia, so why not a hotel?
“This feels like home,” said Nguyen, 60. “I’m financially independent. People look up to me.”
She runs the hotel with drill sergeant efficiency. One day, she pitched guests a tour through the canals as Horsfall launched into a tale about a treasure map he possessed that led to 150 buried samurai swords.
“Ken the Cowboy says no one smiles at him in Australia,” Nguyen said, smiling.
Something less definable anchors these men and their spouses to this Mekong tributary. Their time here grants them reassurance as they age, even acceptance.
“We were the bad guys,” said Dennis Coe, an American vet and Horsfall’s best friend in Ben Tre, who recently returned to Washington state to seek treatment for conditions he attributes to Agent Orange.
But when he returned to his wife’s hometown, no one blamed Coe for his part in the war. “You see the world from a different perspective,” he said.
He’ll go back, just as soon as the doctor says he can travel again, he said by phone. “I miss my friends.”
Especially, he said, his buddy Horsfall.
The hotel owner is quietly proud he can fix almost anything--a cargo boat engine or a power generator using tubing and a plastic bucket. But he never mentions one item on the list of things he has helped patch: broken lives.
“Vets are welcome,” he said. “We have somewhere they can stay.”
