PK (2014)
Film review #560
Director: Rajkumar Hirani
SYNOPSIS: An alien arrives on Earth, and has his communicator with his spaceship stolen. Now stranded on the planet, he attempts to learn how to survive and learn the ways of the people here, but he is especially confused by the concept of religion. He meets Jaggu, a reporter who is looking for her next big story. She is intrigued by his naivety and how his simple questions challenge the conflicts between different religions, and how those that profess to know what God wants are the ones who know least about religion. Jaggu and PK show down with Tapaswi, a religious leader who has come into possession of PK’s communicator, claiming to be a religious artefact, and the pair try to expose him and get PK’s communicator back to he can return home...
THOUGHTS/ANALYSIS: PK is a 2014 Indian sci-fi film. The story primarily revolves around PK, an alien who, in the film’s opening, lands on Earth, and shortly after has his communicator with his spaceship stolen, meaning he has no way to get back home. Attempting to adjust to life on Earth, he turns to God for help, but is perpetually confused by all of the different religions and their rules. He eventually encounters Jaggu, a reporter who is looking out for a worthwhile story, and becomes interested by PK’s naïve take on the world, and how it provides genuine insight on the world from a fresh perspective. Opting to tackle the absolute minefield that is differences and conflicts between religions, PK from the outset sets itself a dangerous task, but the comedic aspect of the film never strays into being offensive or controversial, focusing on what the religions have in common, rather than their confrontations. This might seem to be a bit simplistic, but this is one of the film’s greatest strengths; it manoeuvres through it’s subject in such an expert manner that it creates an entertaining experience full of life. On top of this, the dialogue and performances are precise and genuine, and again, are professionally executed.
The film is essentially divided into two halves: the first half deals with the more comedic aspects and a very “fish out of water” situation surrounding PK being stranded on Earth. The second half switches to a more drama and serious tone, with PK trying to expose the religious preacher Tapaswi, and get back his communicator that Tapaswi is claiming to be a religious icon to his followers. Again, when the film gets serious, it still maintains it’s expert exploration of it’s subject: avoiding being controversial, but still making a significant statement and creating some intense emotional moments. Even though the film is almost split down the middle, the change of tone doesn’t feel artificial, and feels like it moves on just when it needs to. If I were to find a fault in the plot, I would say the forced romance element that shows up at the final part of the film and about “letting go” just didn’t really need to be there, but even then, it is handled so well in terms of dialogue and acting, and producing a emotional reaction that it doesn’t really matter that it wasn’t really necessary, because it still produces something worthwhile.
The cast work so well in their roles, and although they are roles you are probably familiar with, such as PK being a clueless alien adjusting to life on Earth, they are still brought to life vibrantly, as mentioned, through stellar acting and sharp dialogue, and in the end it feels like you come out of it with a well rounded experience that never hits a lull. Despite having a few bumps in the story with a few elements that it could have done without, I think it is necessary to give PK high praise as a film: it is lots of fun, but also very heartfelt, alongside making a powerful statement without being mired in controversy. The film deserves the praise it received, and in particular, the absolutely solid script and dialogue, enhanced further with a host of strong performances. Not quite perfect, but deserving of it’s huge success.

Dunki Movie Review: DUNKI bears the Rajkumar Hirani stamp of filmmaking with the right message and emotions.
Dunki Review {3.5/5} & Review Rating
DUNKI is the story of four youths trying to fly abroad for a better life. The year is 1995. Army officer Hardayal Singh Dhillon aka Hardy (Shah Rukh Khan) arrives in Laltu, Punjab to meet Mahendar, who saved his life. He reaches his house and finds out that Mahendar is no more.  Mahendar lost a golden opportunity in sports while trying to save Hardy and then passed away in an accident. Hardy takes it upon himself to help Mahendar's family. Mahendar's sister Manu (Taapsee Pannu) asks Hardy to help her with wrestling. This is because she wants to go to the UK to earn and win back her house that her father had lost due to non-payment of a loan. An agent has assured her that she can be sent on a sports visa and hence, she wants to learn the basic techniques of a sport. Hardy teaches her wrestling. However, the agent usurps money from Manu, Balli Kakkad (Anil Grover), Buggu Lakhanpal (Vikram Kochhar), and others and runs away. With no other option, Manu, Balli, and Buggu approach Geetu Gulati (Boman Irani) for help. He runs an English-speaking institute and promises to help those trying to clear their IELTS exam. The trio along with Hardy enroll in his classes. Here, they meet Sukhi (Vicky Kaushal), and all five become close friends. They aim to reach the UK by hook or by crook. What happens next forms the rest of the film.
Tumblr media
Abhijat Joshi, Rajkumar Hirani and Kanika Dhilon's story is superb and very relatable, especially for those from the South Asian diaspora. Many people from this belt have faced issues with immigration and hence, they’ll connect with the plot. Abhijat Joshi, Rajkumar Hirani, and Kanika Dhilon's screenplay is a mixed bag. While some moments are emotional and hilarious, the script overall could have been much better, especially when it's penned by Abhijat and Rajkumar. Abhijat Joshi, Rajkumar Hirani and Kanika Dhilon's dialogues are witty at places but again, going by their previous work, the one-liners should have had far more punch.
Rajkumar Hirani's direction is simplistic. As always, he uses his laugh-cry-drama formula successfully. Hence, the film doesn’t ever get slow or boring. There’s no dull moment. The film starts in the present day and the way the dynamics are shown, one gets curious to know what must have happened with the characters. It also gives a déjà vu of the beginning of 3 IDIOTS [2009]. The scenes where Hardy and his team try to learn English and their visa interviews are worth watching. The intermission point is quite strong. In the second half, the scenes of Hardy in the UK court and the whole Saudi Arabia sequence turn out to be the best parts of the film. The ending is moving, and the stats mentioned are quite hard-hitting and depressing. Thankfully, the final scene is funny, and the film ends on a lighter note.
On the flipside, the writing is not up to the mark. The makers haven’t focused on the families and their sufferings. Viewers should feel that the characters had a strong reason to move to the UK. But this aspect was not properly touched upon. Secondly, the humorous scenes in the first half don’t bring the house down. The same applies to Manu’s fake marriage episode. And this was necessary as all previous works of Rajkumar Hirani wowed the audience. As a result, one can’t help but expect tremendously from his films. DUNKI is nowhere close to MUNNA BHAI, 3 IDIOTS, PK, etc, and hence, audiences will feel a bit dejected, despite the film’s strong points.
Speaking of performances, Shah Rukh Khan does well and brings alive the humour and emotions effectively. However, as an old man, he’s not quite convincing. Nevertheless, it’s heartening to see him shed his superstar aura and play a character role after witnessing him in massier avatars in PATHAAN and DUNKI. Taapsee Pannu is a revelation and delivers a smashing performance. She gets the nuances in the old-age scenes quite right. Vicky Kaushal rocks the show in a cameo. Anil Grover and Vikram Kochhar are lovely and lend able support. Boman Irani and Deven Bhojani (Puru Patel) are lovely. Others do well.
Pritam's music is not of chartbuster variety, but the songs are well-woven into the narrative. 'Lutt Putt Gaya' comes at a fine juncture and is pleasant. 'Main Tera Rasta Dekhunga' stands out. 'Nikle The Kabhi Hum Ghar Se', 'O Maahi' and 'Banda' are in sync with the film’s theme. Aman Pant's background score is appropriate.
Muraleedharan C K, Manush Nandan and Amit Roy's cinematography is breathtaking and gives the film a big-screen appeal. Subrata Chakraborty and Amit Ray's production design is authentic. Sham Kaushal's action is limited. Eka Lakhani's costumes are realistic and non-glamorous. Rajkumar Hirani's editing is slick.
On the whole, DUNKI bears the Rajkumar Hirani stamp of filmmaking with the right message and emotions as a backdrop. However, it is not as outstanding as his previous films as the writing plays spoilsport to a great extent. At the box office, it will turn out to be a mix bag.

THE BROOD (1979) a Cronenberg film.
Tumblr media
IMdB RATING: 6'8 TIME: 1h32m
BROODS are a fictional race of insectoid, parasitic, extraterrestrial beings appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics, especially Uncanny X-Men. Created by writer Chris Claremont and artist Dave Cockrum, they first appeared in The Uncanny X-Men #155 (March 1982). The following review of the movie is as spooky as the film itself. If you get through the review, well, that means you can attempt to see Cronenberg's film. However, I cannot guarantee you will get through his movie til the end. There is only one way to find out...try to watch the bloody film...

The Brood is a 1979 Canadian psychological body horror film written and directed by David Cronenberg. The film is about a man and his mentally ill ex-wife, who has been sequestered by a psychiatrist known for his controversial therapy techniques. A series of brutal unsolved murders serves as the backdrop for the central narrative.
Tumblr media
Written by Cronenberg after his own acrimonious divorce (which explains it all), he intended the screenplay as a meditation on a fractured relationship between a husband and wife who share a child, and cast Eggar and Hindle as loose facsimiles of himself and his ex-wife. He would later state that, despite its incorporation of science fiction elements, he considered it his sole feature that most embodied a "classic horror film". The film's score was composed by Howard Shore, in his film composing debut.
You have been sufficiently forewarned. Watch the film at your own risk.

Though the film initially received positive reviews from critics, it would establish itself as a cult film in the following decades. It has attracted scholarly interest from academics in the areas of film theory for its themes regarding mental illness and parenthood. In 2006, the Chicago Film Critics Association named it the 88th scariest film of all time. In 2013, it was selected for restoration by the Criterion Collection. (The Brood - Wikipedia)

"on veterans day after the production show the cruise director stood on the stage and asked the veterans in the audience to stand and be applauded. they did; there were many. many old men standing and smiling, and the applause was deafening.
two films: matrix revolutions last saturday (i wont get into it, but man! what happened to the buddhist promise of the first movie? the enlightenmnt allegory, the idea of awakening into the real world, of realizing that capitalist western culture is just an illusion? why give that up for some c- high school meandering on determinism and some easy christianity? i still had fun though. especially liked bad guys on ceiling, good guys on ground. anyway.) and a reviewing of the two towers (again, i wont get into it, but man! the number of contrived dramatic peaks and valleys made me feel christmas candy sick after a while) in the cruise ships cinema earlier today. in both, scenes of men preparing for war. the masculine shouts of men ready to die. the dramatic placement of a helmet onto a frightened teenaged head. et cetera.
on the ship, fat men, drinking, rude, poorly dressed. on land, thin men, sweating, fearsome, barely dressed.
on the television, bush in britian, defending war. in the staff mess, a collective cosmopolitan grumble.
two books: franzen's the corrections (a book i have avoided for a long time because of its ubiquity; every san francisco party i go to has it there on the shelf, tucked between manufacturing consent and lonley planet: south america. but i liked it), which discusses mental illness in the setting of domestic suburbia, men in depressive states, and thoreau's walden, which discusses individuality and the dangers of blind adherence of custom. "i have never learned anything from old men." what a badass he is! what a man he is!
jts, paraphrasing robert bly: the soft man, the sensitive man, out of touch with his primitive masculinity, with his roughness, lust and bloodthirst.
mcw on masculinity: "the best thing to do to a group of men is put them to war, give them a task, a goal. heres a gun, now go!"
a book from my childhood, real men dont eat quiche. the sensitive overcompensation of the alda male.
on the ship: complaining. companing about bureacracy, about vapid things. men whining over fingernails, life and death unknown.
a song played tonight, in the jazz club, trio: when i fall in love (...it will be forever). i play very sensitively.
jem, drunk, on a college stoop, lamenting the shallowness of academia: "lets get a gun. lets get a gun."
pk, (what is your middle name pk?) on the subject of the hypothesized new american revolution: "historically, people dont rise up unless they are starving."
all of these things.
they fit together, i know they do. here we have men who have fought in wars. here we have men who have not. not just the individuals, i mean the whole group of men, my peers, my great wonderful male friends spread out over america, who have never known the terror of actually having their lives in danger. and our minds reel and rock! our minds shake with religion and politics, wth art and love! going crazy with metaphysical speculation and women and god and music and wind. crazy. the world seems paper thin at times. sometimes i cant tell if im waking or dreaming. sometimes i get sad enough to shake.
but in contrast, in contrast this all seems rather ridiculous, and i wonder if my generation hasnt missed out on something essential. give me a gun. i dont want it. now listen- i dont want it. but maybe i need it. to understand something real, with consequnce that i can biologically feel, with terror running through me that will silence my intellectual nosoul and bring me back to my evolutionary assignment, to live at all costs. i dont want it, i think thats part of it, not wanting it but doing it anyway, because choice is taken from you. because your family will be killed. not iraq or vietnam; more like wwI or II (for europeans), the civil war. our production show "spotlight broadway!" ends wth a les miseables medley. the french revolution. theres a fucking war. "will you join in our crusade, who will be strong and fight with me?". those kinds of wars, where its in your backyard.
i know im sitting here glorifing (isnt there a y in that word?) war from a pretty plush position. what the hell do i know of it. i wouldnt be saying this if i knew. but thats the point, thats the point. my plush position. its despicable, its fat and slovenly, its unmasculine. its complacent. so much of myself and my geneation has become complacent in action, filled with words of questioning spirit and political anger and energetic connection but lacking in the barbaric action that creates history. the emails i get, the pleas to write to my congressman, sign this petition. a lack of action. a lack of violence.
so maybe i need a gun and a war.
but i wont, i know i wont. because im not hungry, im happy, happy with my eyes closed. and the radical left will never rise up in violence, and the fat men on the ship will drink, and articles will be read, and love songs will be played, and acid trips will show us the stars inside of ourselves, and it will be fine and beautiful and under no threat.
and maybe this is wonderful, maybe that absence of terror is a vital step in evolution, maybe grassroots campaigning will actually get compassion into office, maybe peace is a real and viable goal. its a hard call though. it has no historical precedent, this life without fear.
perhaps it will end in global enlightenment, the men in their indian shirts smiling and dancing.
perhaps it will end in global holocaust, the men in their college tshirts picking radiation boils off of their bloated bellies.
i suppose we will see."

You probably didn't know this, but India has the biggest film industry in the entire globe. Folk, classical, modern, regional, and many more art styles have beautifully merged in this stunning work.
More than a century has passed since the beginning of the Indian film industry. The bilingual culture of India  has been extremely advantageous to the  film industry. Regional films have a stronghold  over the Indian film industry as a whole in addition to being financially  successful intheir own regions. Most people agree that Indian  film business is the most  diverse in the entire globe. An industry  that produces about 1800 films annually in a variety of languages. 7.4 million people are directly employed by the film business, while another 23 million people have opportunity to earn living through its indirect effect.  Indian cinema was acknowledged that world's top film production industry in 2013,  followed by Hollywood, China, and Nigeria. An Old Interview of Kareena Kapoor Surfaces, Boycott Laal Singh Chaddha Trending On Twitter
Tumblr media
The trailer of Aamir Khan’s upcoming movie Laal Singh Chaddha was released during the IPL 2022 final match and it’s getting mixed reactions from the people. Some liked the trailer and some calling it sasta remake of the Hollywood classic Forrest Gump starring Tom Hanks. The movie is also on the news because of #BoycottLaalSinghChaddha is trending on Twitter.
The makers of the upcoming Aamir Khan-starrer Laal Singh Chaddha released the trailer on Sunday. Laal Singh Chaddha is the official remake of Tom Hank’s 1994 Oscar winning movie Forrest Gump and the trailer is getting mixed reactions on social media. It is criticized mainly for being an exact copy of the Hollywood movie and many felt that Aamir Khan’s acting seems same like his act in Dhoom 3 and PK. Only after hours of trailer being released, the hash tag Boycott Laal Singh Chaddha started trending on Twitter.
One of the reasons of the trend is a two years old video of Kareena Kapoor being surfaced online. In the video Kareena Kapoor says, “The audience has made us; no one else has made us. The same people pointing fingers are the ones who have made these nepotistic stars, right? Are not you going to the hall to watch the film, right? Do not go then! Nobody has forced you! I find this whole discussion is completely weird.” This statement of Kareena Kapoor didn’t go well with many and Boycott Laal Singh Chaddha started getting trending on Twitter. But this interview is two years old and she was replying to interviewer Barkha Dutt’s question when she asked Kareena Kapoor about the whole nepotism debate that’s going around everywhere and it had nothing to do with Laal Singh Chaddha.
Apart from this, people are targeting Aamir Khan also for one of his earlier statements where he said India has become intolerant and he is worried about the future of his wife and children. They are sharing various clips from Aamir Khan’s movie PK in which he is supposedly mocking Hindu Gods and making fun of their religious sentiments. From the trailer getting mixed reviews and now this trend of Boycott Laal Singh Chaddha has made the road tough ahead for the movie.
Laal Singh Chaddha is produced by Aamir Khan himself and directed by Advait Chandan who earlier directed Aamir Khan’s Secret Superstar also. The movie is scheduled to hit the box office on August 11, 2022. Apart from Aamir Khan and Kareena Kapoor Khan, the film will also star Telegu actor Naga Chaitanya in his Bollywood debut and Mona Singh of Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahi.

Okay this is going to sound SO weird but we’re gonna roll with it sjfkhgdfjkh I’ve been thinking about the bechloe kiss a lot (who isn’t honestly) and how different life was for me a year ago. This is very long and rambly and weird but bear with me jfdghjdfsg. This time last year I was miserable, I was living with my awful mother, I had nothing going for me that I was happy about and I couldn’t see a conceivable future with me in it.
And then at 3am on December 10th I had a gay panic attack at @djbubblegum and said nothing but “oh my god” for about an hour as we both stared at this video of them kissing. We had been about to go to bed, I think we’d been watching a movie with some other people and we were the only ones left in the vc. We were getting to be good friends, but this was the moment I can pinpoint and say “that’s when we became best friends, that shared WHAT THE FUCK moment bonded us together forever” and whilst there’s been many a memorable 3am conversation with PK since (Becato anyone???) THIS is the one that I look at fondly and say “yeah that’s when I knew we’d be friends for a very long time”
PK did a kiss episode of the Pitch Slapped Podcast that was out not 48 hours later and that was kinda the first time I’d ever really engaged with @chloebeale knowingly (I’d read a whole heap of her fics, they actually got me back into writing because they were just SO GOOD and I wanted to try and make content that was half as good as hers was, I’d just not realised they were one and the same person until then) and I remember having a “!!! ANOTHER NORTHERNER!!!” moment and sending her a really excitable ask that didn’t weird her out, and after that (and another ask that we both remember fondly 😌) we started engaging more with each other and I eventually ended up in her discord server.
Things kinda blur together after that, but I know that Ellie and I got closer, as did PK and I, and as 2021 rolled around and the pandemic restrictions eased I went to stay with Ellie for a week because I just needed a break from my home life and all the shit that went with it, I needed to just breathe. And Ellie gave me that, I have never been that quickly comfortable with someone, that relaxed and happy to just be myself and that changed my life forever. I had the space to think, and I realised that the path I was on was making me fucking miserable, and more importantly I didn’t have to stay on it if I didn’t want to. Ellie changed my life, and I will never be able to thank her enough for everything that she has done and continues to do for me, I am beyond grateful for her and the way she has my back.
As for PK?? Well, she continues to be my best friend, perhaps one of the strongest and kindest people I have ever met, and every day I wake up grateful that we’re friends and aspiring to be a little more like her every day. None of you have any idea how incredible she is (except Ellie obvs dskfhdf) and I can’t wait to have her in my corner for the rest of my life, because I know with her there I can do absolutely anything I set my mind too.
It’s now a year later, and I don’t recognise the person I was last year. After December 10th 2020 my life changed forever and I now have the biggest support group of beautiful people that I trust my life with (something that seemed inconceivable a year ago). I’m doing the degree course I always wanted to do, I have my own flat, and I’m happy... something that seemed like such a foreign concept and completely unobtainable twelve months ago.
To the people, not just Ellie and PK, that change my life and make me so grateful every day: @chubby-maimaki, @forthosebelow, @accio-sense, @143bc, @snowydot, @icedragone, @trainwrecks-unite, and @trixyougurt to name just a few whose urls I can remember sdfjdsfgdfds, to the people who review my stuff on a regular basis and constantly encourage me to be a better writer, to all of you who take the time to read through this long ass post, thank you so so much, from the bottom of my heart, for being you and for letting me be a part of your lives. I have so much love for all of you and it carries me through the bad days and the long days and the days I don’t really feel like doing anything at all.
And to Anna Kendrick and Brittany Snow who will never see this but I just want to put the energy out into the universe, thank you for giving the gays what they wanted and for creating this community of proud little weirdos that have forever changed my life 💖💖💖

fanfic writer ask meme! L, M, N, R, Y?
L:  Which of your fanfics was the most emotionally challenging to write?
Overlapping Spaces (Thor fandom) although that's more to do with the place I was in at the time and the specific way I was at odds with the fandom. The fandom tended to side with Loki a whole lot and write the other characters off as terrible jerks that had Driven Him To It (not sure how later movies support or contradict this narrative, I didn't watch them) and I disagreed and was angry about it and kind of a jerk about expressing it.
Which is background for this fic, where I was kind of writing fantasy mental health care focused heavily on stuff I wished I could be given and diving into some of my own symptoms (Loki's problems in this fic aren't mine, but panic attacks and meltdowns are heavily drawn on), while reviewers were sometimes saying how awful Loki's family were to put him through that treatment. It felt like trying to write Loki's family as any kind of understanding was always going to be undermined by people coming in primed to see them as the bad guys, sometimes.
Anyway, it was a lot, although it was also carthartic to write and often fun (as writing with persephone_kore always was). And then I got into Girl Genius because I really needed to leave Thor fandom but still wanted to share a fandom with PK and she recommended it :D
M: What’s the weirdest AU scenario you’ve ever come up with?  Did it turn into a story?
Watchmen/Watership Down fusion AU. Wait, no, that was for the kinkmeme so it wasn't something I came up with. (It also wasn't kinky, for the record).
Either Girl Genius/My Little Pony fusion AU or Murderbot/Toy Story fusion AU.
N: Any fic ideas brewing that you’d care to share?
I keep brewing them and then not finding the motivation to do anything with them ^^;;
Like a lot of people on finishing tgcf my mind started turning over scenarios where Mu Qing and Feng Xin find out the full extent of what happened to Xie Lian. But it's really hard to write that while keeping it in character - they weren't good at dealing with it then, they're not good at dealing with it now, and they'd rather interact in disguise forever than try to talk about things. Even with things improving by the end they just. Don't want to talk about it. (Mu Qing had to almost die and Xie Lian wouldn't talk about these things even if he was almost dying.)
I've toyed around with sillier Xianle Trio ideas like centaurworld crossovers, pokemon crossovers, and "alphas share a school project" but none of them come together.
R: Which writers (fanfic or otherwise) do you consider the biggest influence on you and your writing?
Diana Wynne Jones and Neil Gaiman probably, although obviously I'm not on their level. But the way they write is similar enough to how I naturally approach things for me to learn from unlike, say, Terry Pratchett, where I adore his writing but can't imitate it even poorly.
Y: What are your thoughts on your personal satisfaction with something you’ve written vs. the popularity of your stories?  Do you tend to be most satisfied with your most popular stories?
I don't know, really. I tend to be most focused on new stuff, and my satisfaction with that is usually heavily tied up in popularity - if no one likes it I just kind of go "oh, guess it sucked". Older stuff I disconnect from more, so it's great to get comments but I'm more likely to judge the fic outside of whether people liked it.
I am more likely to be satisfied with popular stories though, because I'm trying to communicate things here, so if no one picked up what I was putting down I haven't really accomplished anything!
Haha, that's a lot of words.
