For Magnolia Hotshots, being 'a good defensive team' remains prime focus MAGNOLIA HOTSHOTS Additions: Jackson Corpuz, Aris Dionisio Subtractions: Bam Gamalinda, Aldrech Ramos Holdovers: Justin Melton, Paul Lee, Jio Jalalon, PJ Simon, Ian Sangalang, Michael Calisaan, Mark Barroca, Marc Pingris, Rome dela Rosa, Chris Banchero, Mon Abundo, Kyle Pascual The lowdown It was a relatively quiet offseason for Magnolia, but the few moves that it did make over the break could possibly make all the difference in a wide-open race to the top this year. These weren't necessarily massive swings, but acquiring Jackson Corpuz for Aldrech Ramos and selecting Aris Dionisio with the 9th overall pick in the Rookie Draft were certainly not lateral moves, too, as coach Chito Victolero believes that adding two defense-savvy forwards would add some much-needed ceiling to their roster. Magnolia didn't need to make any big splashes, anyway, since its retained core is still fully capable of making a deep run in this year's playoffs even it only managed one runner-up finish and two quarterfinals exits last season. "We introduced new concepts, but there aren't too many," Victolero said in Filipino. "We're still relying on the same system, which focuses on us being a good defensive team. On offense, we added a few wrinkles but it's still about the same system that we ran in the past few years." Magnolia allowed the least points per contest (89.5) last season, and teams shot league-low numbers of 39.7 percent from the field and 29.3 percent on 3-pointers when faced against an unforgiving Hotshots defense. But the team has been missing a couple of frontcourt pieces and has yet to practice as a complete unit. Dionisio is still under contract in the MPBL with the Manila Stars, while Raffy Reavis is still recovering from appendicitis and is expected to miss the first week of the Philippine Cup. These absences, though, don't dampen Victolero's optimism. "Just a few more adjustments to be made for the opening. We were able to do what we wanted to do in the offseason, and we reviewed everything offensively and defensively," he said. Part 1 https://www.instagram.com/p/B9ZPCqCjTJt/?igshid=3b9kaluph2fz

ABOUT OSLO TimeLine Theatre Company’s production of OSLO is the Chicago premiere. It premiered in fall 2016 in a sold-out run at New York’s Lincoln Center and opened on Broadway in April 2017. It then played at London’s Royal National Theatre in September 2017 before transferring to the West End in October 2017. OSLO received the 2017 Tony Award for Best Play, as well as New York Critics, Outer Critics, Drama Desk, Drama League, Lucille Lortel, and Obie awards—a sweep of the 2016-17 New York awards season—and was nominated for the Olivier and Evening Standard awards.  OSLO is a remarkable story about the unlikely friendships, quiet heroics, and sheer determination that pushed two foes to reach something neither thought truly possible—peace. When the Israeli prime minister and the chairman of the Palestine Liberation Organization shook hands on the White House lawn in 1993, the world had no idea what it took to orchestrate that momentous occasion. Behind the scenes, a Norwegian diplomat and her social scientist husband hatched an intricate, top secret, and sometimes comical scheme to gather an unexpected assortment of players at an idyllic estate just outside Oslo. Far from any international glare, mortal enemies were able to face each other not as adversaries, but as fellow human beings.  J.T. Rogers’ OSLO is a humorous, surprising, and inspiring true story about the people inside politics, and the incredible progress that is possible when we focus on what makes us human—together.            The cast will star Scott Parkinson as Terje Larsen and Bri Sudia as Mona Juul, with TimeLine Company Member Anish Jethmalani as Ahmed Qurie and Jed Feder as Uri Savir, and Bernard Balbot, Ron E. Paul Lee leads undermanned Magnolia to smashing season debut vs Alaska
MAGNOLIA leaned on its star guard who wasn’t supposed to be playing as it walloped Alaska, 108-95, to jumpstart its PBA Philippine Cup campaign on Wednesday night at the Filoil Flying V Centre.
Paul Lee, earlier listed as doubtful due to an MCL injury, delivered a vintage performance with 30 points on a scorching 11-of-14 shooting, on top of seven boards, and six assists to lead the Hotshots to the victory to open their season.
“Thanks to Paul Lee,” Hotshots coach Chito Victolero said. “Tatlong araw pa lang nagpa-practice ‘yan. Iba talaga yung puso ng bata. He wants to play and help the team.”
“I’m also thankful to the rest of my players,” he added as he missed Rafi Reavis (hip), Marc Pingris (kidney stones operation), and Jio Jalalon (MCL). “They know we’re undermanned, so they knew they had to step up.”
Bambam Gamalinda was among those players as the veteran wingman made the most of his starting gig, firing all his 15 points in the first three quarters and adding one board, and one assist without a turnover in 21 minutes.
Rome dela Rosa and Ian Sangalang were the other two Hotshots who scored in double figures with 13 and 10 points, respectively, while Kyle Pascual and 37-year-old PJ Simon chipped in nine points apiece.
Robbie Herndon, another player listed as doubtful due to back spasms, also came to play to make his pro debut, contributing nine points, seven boards, and one steal in almost 20 minutes.
The rookie wingman saved his best for last, scoring his last two points on a tough, crucial jumper that proved to be the dagger as it put them up at 105-95 after the Aces came to within a single-digit gap.
Calvin Abueva led the Aces with 20 points, 15 boards, five assists, and one block, while Vic Manuel also registered 20 points, along with eight rebounds, and one steal that went to waste.
The scores:
MAGNOLIA 108 – Lee 30, Gamalinda 15, Sangalang 13, Dela Rosa 10, Simon 9, Herndon 9, K. Pascual 9, Barroca 6, Melton 3, Ramos 2, Brondial 2
ALASKA 95 – Abueva 20, Manuel 20, Teng 16, Casio 10, R. Pascual 7, Enciso 5, Exciminiano 5, Banchero 4, Thoss 3, J. Pascual 2, Cruz 2, Magat 1, Racal 0
Quarterscores: 21-26, 57-47, 87-74, 108-95

Lee explodes for 30, gives Magnolia opening win against Alaska The Magnolia Hotshots got their first win in the 2018 PBA Philippine Cup after defeating the Alaska Aces, 108-95, on Wednesday, December 20 at the San Juan Arena. Paul Lee paved the way for Magnolia with 30 points in just 24 minutes of play. He shot 11-of-14 from the floor and had seven rebounds and six assists. Bambam Gamalinda scored 15 markers, while Ian Sangalang had a double-double of 13 points and 10 boards. Hotshots rookie Robbie Herndon had nine points in his debut. The Aces started the game well, establishing a 26-21 lead at the end of the first period. Alaska pushed the margin to seven early in the second frame before Magnolia uncorked a huge 28-9 run — spearheaded by Lee, Herndon and Gamalinda — to create a 12-point lead, 56-44, with 46 seconds remaining in the half. A Vic Manuel layup at the 6:39 mark of the third quarter trimmed the deficit to nine, but the Hotshots — ignited by Lee yet again — were able to restore order, going up by 16 points, 87-71. after a three-pointer from PJ Simon. Magnolia was still holding a 16-point advantage in the fourth before Alaska went on an 11-3 blast — capped by a fastbreak layup from Jvee Casio — to come within eight points, under four minutes remaining in the game. A triple from Lee brought the Hotshots’ lead back up to double digits, but on the next play Simon Enciso scored on a reverse layup to make it a nine-point game, 103-94, 2:57 left. A split from Calvin Abueva at the stripe further cut the lead to eight, but a bucket from Herndon and a free throw from Rome dela Rosa put Magnolia up 106-95, with 55 seconds left on the clock, pretty much sealing the game for the Hotshots. Abueva paced Alaska with 20 points, 15 rebounds and five assists, while Manuel had 20 of his own off the bench. THE SCORES MAGNOLIA 108 – Lee 30, Gamalinda 15, Sangalang 13, Dela Rosa 10, Simon 9, Herndon 9, K. Pascual 9, Barroca 6, Melton 3, Ramos 2, Brondial 2.
