littlepip from when i reread fallout equestria last year

artist notes and more sketches under the cut

i designed this mostly cuz i'm not super into the fanon littlepip- her colors don't harmonize at all they are Uggy. i set out to make a unique one so i did a bunch of research on descriptions of her (there aren't any, aside from implying her colors are comparatively plain) and other fan interpretations of her. my favorite old design i found is this white one, but i decided her having apple family white freckles was important to me so uhh. i landed pretty close to where i started. oops

i opted to draw her in the canterlot police barding from later in the story because all the fanart has the stable barding. she also has the pipbuck melded to her leg to match.

lots more research and wrestling with mechanical objects because i wanted to get them right (there are still mistakes ppl pointed out to me </3 i am a wee character artist not an engineer)

do tell me more about fallout equestria. i read some of it when i was a lot younger and really into mlp but i got bored of it

@mindriz Thank you for asking!! I liked Fallout Equestria a lot but don't have anything fresh to say about it other than the fact that even after I played Fallout New Vegas I still kept accidentally calling them PipBucks. Some thoughts on Fallout Equestria: Project Horizons (based off of foggy memories from reading it as a teen):

That shit is so anime. The plot is convoluted as hell and just gets more so over time. Blackjack is a dyed-in-the-wool Oh Cee. She shoots things and blows them up and is an incorrigible licentious flirt and is drunk all the time and gets beaten within an inch of her life every day and tortured and gang-raped and loses her limbs and they get replaced by cybernetic implants (with fingers) and her eyes glow yellow from radiation and she gets sharp carnivore teeth and she eats gems as fuel. I had to go look up whether she got wings because I forgot. And yes, of course she did. Jesus Christ. The whole fic is a series of massive escalations with the author constantly fighting to up the stakes by asking themselves "what's the coolest thing that could happen next?" I still kind of enjoyed it? I dropped it a few chapters in the first time I read it because Blackjack got on my nerves initially, but came back to it because it's an engaging action fic, the characters are very likeable (P-21 is my favourite), and it has a ton of fun ideas and concepts that add value to the original, albeit more in a "okay but this guy I made up was orchestrating everything you made up behind the scenes" way than in a "yes and" way. Relatedly, I think it was a mistake for PH to cross over with FoE, at least in the way that it did. By having Blackjack meet Littlepip and have them swap war stories, the reader is encouraged to compare their struggles in the wasteland. But they're different stories with vastly different scopes. Like yeah, Blackjack suffered worse, but that's because Littlepip's author had some restraint. A little disrespectful to the original fic, to me.

(Another interesting thing I've never seen anyone remark on: PH had an expansive team of betas and editors. And I would read PH author Somber's other fics, posted before and after PH. They're very, very far below the level of writing in PH, which leads me to speculate that their beta team was doing a lot of the legwork here. I could be totally wrong but I don't think I am... the descriptive writing sometimes really ramps up in quality, but inconsistently. Somber seemed to be very much the idea guy.)

“Hmm…” Stella was looking at her PDA. “Okay, so, looking at this, your new device has just arrived at where you live. Check your mailbox. The power button should be clearly marked, and you can remove the stickers once you have its location memorized. It also comes with a mount since you’re not a unicorn, so you can strap it to one of your forelegs like a PipBuck.”

“First thing it’ll do is calibrate itself, so watch the screen and do what it says. There’s room for error, but please try to be as precise as possible regardless. Shouldn’t be too hard. Don’t forget, both your voice and your eyes can be used to navigate its menus, but it’ll only pick those up if you raise the leg it’s on to look at it.”

She gives them some supplies and a pipbuck for guidance as she is in a surprisingly charitable and merciful mood "nah get the fuck out mah territory!"

Decided to give my Fallout Equestria oc a proper vector and made this!

Day 4 stuck in a bottle:

I learned that if I'm careful I can walk the inside of the bottle to roll along the ground....and promptly fell down a cliff into the ocean. I might have to suggest @nox-lunarwing get a pipbuck so they can track the one built into my leg when misadventures like this happan.. ... whenever they find me the is....oh well I've got a wonderful view and watching the fish is relaxi....zzzzzz

Commission 3 of 5 for Brute!! This time the OC is Mystic Lore, a science-y unicorn. I had so much fun with this one!! The freckles created a lot of neat shapes and I tried a different body type; I think it worked really well~

PROLOGUE: Of PipBucks and Cutie Marks

In which we get introduced to our main character via what she thinks defines her the most: The PipBoy -- but ponified: The PipBuck!

That half the features she describes are mainly useful for combat gets strangely glanced over by someone who only lived her whole life in a (seemingly very peaceful, albeit boring) fallout shelter.

(They call them stables here cause, ya know, ponified! You'll get used to it.)

Now, that's not me being a nit-picky asshole. Knowing how the story ends this actually makes all of the sense, which is a very nice touch for returning readers like me. New readers might not think too critically about this information at the very beginning of the book, so I don't think it comes to the detriment of them.

The prologue and the first chapter in general surprised me with their confidence in succinctly and entertainingly saying what it sets out to say. How PipBucks are these miraculous inventions to us, outsiders of the stable, but are the most everyday item for the residents of the stable is a great pivot in tone. And sets up the punchline: A PipBuck disappointingly graces her flank as her cutie mark. Followed by a little rant of how PipBucks aren't actually that great.

All of that characterizes our yet unnamed Heroine, as well as the environment she grew up in in a funny yet economic way.

In reality it was like getting a cutie mark of a cutie mark.

In reference to ponies only getting a PipBuck once they have their cutie mark:

Kinda tough to find what you're supposed to be good at when what you're supposed to be good at is something you don't get until you've found what you're supposed to be good at.

Love it.

This prologue also stealthily sets up her ability to pick locks, which she picked up (haha) as she was trying to get her cutie mark. Cutie Mark Crusader style.

Picking locks and hacking terminals is gonna happen a lot in the story, just as it does in the Fallout games. So, seeing this casually planted in a kinda-sorta novelization of these games is pretty cool.

In the last paragraph we finally get her name: LittlePip. Over the years, I've learned to absolutely love this name.

LittlePip's unease with fitting within the society of the stable and the structural hurdles she faced progressing into adulthood there set up her motivation to leave later, while also raising the question the rest of the story will try to answer: If everyone in Equestria is special in some way -- and we don't just accept that LittlePip isn't special -- what about LittlePip is special? Well! Stick around and let's find out :D
