Greater Short-Horned Lizard
Phrynosoma hernandesi
Phrynosoma translates into toad-body, while hernandesi is in honor of Francisco Hernández, one of the first Europeans to have described horned-lizards.
Family: Phrynosomatidae
Fun Fact: “When not active on the surface, the lizards burrow into the soil or occupy rodent burrows.” (IUCN)
Habitat: They are endemic to mountains and shrublands from Alberta, Canada south to Durango, Mexico.
Ecosystem Role: They help control insect and spider populations. They provide food for birds of prey and snakes.
Conservation Status: Least Concern
