Does anybody want to hear about my 100% fabricated Cannonball backstory?
So, imagine this kid. Maybe he's got parents, maybe he doesn't. I think he probably lost his family at a young age and was sent to live with a great aunt/uncle who has a huge house and doesn't really mind if he runs around on his own all day.
At age seven, he gets his hands on a copy of Treasure Island it becomes he favourite book. He reads it cover to cover in three days, staying up as late as he can and reading under the sheets until he falls asleep and wakes up with his face on the still-open book.
There's a small stream on the edge of the property, and he spends every day down there, studying the water currents and watching the different kinds of leaves drift down it. Once he steals an entire package of toothpicks and takes an afternoon holed up in his room making as perfect a model of a ship he can.
After that, his guardians begin to take notice. He receives model kits and books on the history of sailing and every space second of his is devoted to knot-tying. He always keeps a slender piece of rope in his pocket, and it becomes a soothing habit for him to tie and untie it, often without looking, or under his desk to avoid attention when he's at school.
He doesn't get along with the other children very well, though not for lack of trying. They just aren't interested in hearing him list each part of a sailing ship or debating the merit of a sloop versus a schooner. So, he spends most of his free periods reading and sketching and closing his eyes and imagining what it would be like to feel the wind on his face.
What he does excel at is history, especially navy battles. He loves the strategy and the careful planning and the weighing of pros and cons and it delights him whenever the topic in class turns to maritime warfar.
As soon as school lets out he runs the whole way home, back up the hill to the empty old house that has far too many rooms full of stagnant air. He relishes the feeling of the breeze through his hair, seeking out storms and studying the sky to catalogue weather patterns.
All he wants is to be free. To be free of the small-minded people, and the children at his school that regard him strangely, to be free of the same streets and the same sights and the same people who seem content to never set foot anywhere but the dirt they and their family had grown out of.
He comes home full of tales of distant lands and the people and cultures there and dreams of the smell of the sea.
As soon as he turns thirteen, lying awake as the clock strikes midnight as he is taunted by the sound of waves crashing still echoing from his dreams, he decides he's had enough.
He packs a bag, just the necessities (And his well-worn copy of Treasure Island), and leaves a note on the breakfast table.
Then he sets out, following the path to the sea that he'd charted in his mind hundreds of times, chasing the faint cries of seagulls.
He finds a ship, even in the early morning light he can recognise the different classes of each vessel in the harbor. He slips aboard, hiding himself away behind some crates below deck, exhausted from his journey but feeling a thrill of exhilaration as the gentle rocking sends him into the most peaceful sleep of his life.
He figured he'd sleep here so he could find the first crew member aboard in a few hours and beg for a position on the ship, but when he wakes to the afternoon sunlight slanting down into the hold, he knows instantly that this is not the tender rocking of a boat moored not ten feet from the dock. These are the waves only found when one is really truly at sea.
And, despite himself, he can't help but be excited.
Cautiously emerging, he sees a flurry of motion that sparks something in him he hasn't felt in years. He makes note of each task being done, hoping his expertise (Academic though it is) will prove a good bargaining chip with the captain.
He knows exactly where the captain's quarters would be on a ship of this size, and carefully makes his way to the door, knocking hesitantly before hearing an invite to enter.
He is greeted with a slightly shabby but nonetheless friendly looking man, studying a map on his desk. He looks up in surprise at the sight of an unaccounted for child on his ship, but quickly masks it with a professional look.
The boy is too smart for that, though, and he's seen that look shared between teachers before they gently but firmly tell him that while impressive, his report on why a field trip to the marina would be beneficial is of course ridiculous.
Silent tears start dripping down his cheeks, as he lays out his whole story for the captain and begs for even the smallest position on his ship. He won't even ask to be paid, all he needs is to be on the ocean. He's been longing for it all his life, and now that he's finally experienced it the siren song will surely drive him mad if he's deposited back in that horrible landlocked schoolhouse.
The captain is slightly taken aback by this, but his first instinct is to give the boy a hug. He tells him that they will have to dock soon, and then he will be having a very frank discussion with the child's guardians, but he sees no reason why he shouldn't be able to take up an apprenticeship with them.
And, as Cannonball heaves a sigh into the captain's shoulder, he recognizes that feeling that's been calling out to him for so long, the one that immediately slid into place in his heart. The feeling of coming home

So I just read the second MBS Book and Noland telling the kids about Nicholas as a Codebreaker and how they went on a mission once and Nicholas literally talked them out of captivity.
And I am just thinking about that, and how it can't have been the only time he went on a mission. And what if it happened before but it all went super wrong and since then Phil was like 'he goes nowhere without me' and my emotions are all over the place and-

I remember thinking when I reread the mysterious benedict society series in high school that Mr. Benedict and Captain Noland had some sort of gay vibes going on? But like in a completely aroace or qpr kinda way. Idk how to explain this but huh might as well put that out into the world.

WHO DUNNIT TMBS CHALLENGE: We'll both be completely at home in midair.
There was a small community in the city of Stonetown, mostly unnoticed by the city at large. But not entirely unknown. There were whispers about these people, who lived in a large rambling house on a quiet street. It was said these people were not from Earth.
They appeared human, more or less; nobody was quiet sure if that was the result of some sort of disguise, some visual filter allowing them to blend in with their human neighbors, or if somehow the variables had lined up so that life from an nother planet appeared eerily similar to that of Earth.
They kept a low profile, or at least tried to. For as many years as the man, Mr. Benedict he called himself, had lived there, neighbors had seen strange lights floating above the house at odd times of night. But mostly, everything was as expected of a human house in a human city on Earth.
Aliens arrived on Earth from time to time, sometimes on purpose, but often not. Those who could do so attempted to fit in, to pass as human. Those who couldn't... well, their stories were hardly happy. Many of the stories of this community, this family, started out similarly unhappy, but they would not stay that way forever.
A pair of scientists studied Earth from a far-away planet and fell in love, with the planet and each other. After initial studies, they decided to move their lives there, to study this planet in person for the rest of their lives, as a family.
Something went wrong. Their baby -- babies, as it turned out -- ended up separated, alone on a strange planet, and their parents... It was an experimental transport unit to begin with, one they'd modified themselves to handle the long distance. And sometimes experiments don't go as planned.
Do alien children, separated from their parents, grow up knowing they are aliens? That they are from out among the stars? Some do. These two, growing up on different continents, figured it out quite quickly. They soaked up knowledge and it quickly became apparent that they were not of this Earth. Their responses to this were quite different. One wanted so much more than this tiny, pitiful planet could give him. Humans could hardly take care of themselves, and he might as well do it for them. But he always had his sights set on returning to the stars.
The other wanted to learn every possible thing about this planet that had found itself home to him, all about the ground and the sky and the water, about technology and agriculture, about the beings that lived there, the plants and animals, and people.
He had an Earth name, "Nicholas Benedict," written on documents which followed him from orphanage to orphanage, through his time in the Navy, into his life as a scholar, labeling published papers and later the ever-increasing piles of rejected papers, weighed down with the laughter and sneers of the humans rejecting his ideas, the humans who couldn't see what was happening before their eyes-- no, he had to be kind, and patient. It wasn't their fault it was alien technology, that he wasn't affected like they were.
But he had another name too, hidden in the corners of his mind by parents who wanted so badly to see this planet in person, so show their children its wonders. Sometimes, at night, he whispered this name to himself and feel as if he was more connected to his body, to his universe. If anyone had been watching, they would have seen him change, seen a very alien form where his human one had been. John and Violet had seen it, his true form, late at night in the observatory. They had hugged him after, told him he was their friend. Phil Noland had seen him once on accident, turned around and never mentioned it. It was clearly private, and Nicholas had saved his life and was an all-around good man, and nothing much mattered beyond that.
A small bundle appeared outside an orphanage one day. This is not the only time this had happened, or will happen, small babies being found bundled up, some with projection field generators clutched in tiny hands, already burrowing into soft skin.
At first, nobody was sure there was anything inside the blankets, some sort of cruel prank. But no, there he was, a tiny baby boy, excedingly average in appearance. He was taken inside, the adults laughing about how average a baby must be for them to think it was merely a bundle of cloth. These adults tried their best not to be cruel. They often did not manage. The other children were not much better. For as average as this child seemed, he never fit in. But he found books, stories of space and aliens, and he felt understood in a way he never had.
And later, a kind tutor. She was a human, but somehow, inexplicably, she saw him so clearly. More clearly than he was able to see himself. And rather than run away, she cared more. When he thought he was saying goodbye to her for maybe forever he gave her a tight hug, and if the suckers on his limbs stuck a bit she didn't say anything, just squeezed him closer.
A little boy grew flowers on his head, his body a young plant. He was more than his parents had ever expected; the children of aliens themselves, they were never this bright. It was as if the light of a sun they had never seen was glowing out from him as he read, answered questions, drank up knowledge like the water that nourished his roots.
But too much water is not good for a plant, and that's an imperfect metaphor, because it wasn't the knowledge that hurt this child, it was the pressure, the expectations. For perfect blooms trimmed just so as he stood under bright lights and tried not to get his answers mixed up. He started plucking the flowers off his head, twirling them in his fingers to cope with the stress. Eventually, they wilted and stopped growing. His mother tutted and gave him some more water, hoping the lights would help them grow back. They did not, and this child ran away.
A little girl and her father played out among the stars. One day, they came to close to a planet, such an innocuous planet, and the father was captured, pulled to Earth, firey core doused in harbor water. The little girl chased after him but she was too late. She crashed into a farm field, crawling into a bright red bucket for several days as she tried to understand her new surroundings, so different from the vast emptiness of space she had known.
A small bundle appears outside an orphanage. The child inside shifts and changes, writhing into form. Her eyes are wide open, glowing. By the time her form is set, the adults who found her do not remember seeing anything but a tiny, impossibly grumpy baby on their porch.
Some children know they are aliens as they grow up. Some do not. Either way, many feel so so alone, surrounded by beings from a different planet, a planet these alien children are not always suited for, what with its specific gravity and atmosphere. What is it like, to grow up thinking you are the only one like you in the whole world? What is it like, to know you are not, but to feel apart all the same?
Nicholas Benedict grew up knowing he couldn't be the only one. Maybe the others wouldn't be exactly like him, he didn't know about his twin yet, but if he was from another planet, another solar system, then surely others were too. When the Emergency started, alien technology infecting the world with unease and mistrust, he didn't know for sure if he wasn't affected because he was an alien, but it seemed likely. He didn't know if any humans could be unaffected, if other aliens would be unaffected, but he went looking anyways.
And he found them.
A girl who had too many legs if you looked out of the corner of your eye, whose body made too-quick work of the energy from human food.
A girl who was somewhat vaporous, drifting down through a grate to grab a fallen pencil, writing formulas for the exact chemical makeup of her body.
A sad man with no memories, who could almost change his form. Nobody was quite sure if he was an alien, least of all the man himself. But it didn't really matter either way.
And four children found their way there too. The early time they spent together was stressful, knowing the end of the world could be near, but at the same time it was a relief, to have found others like them. Reynie felt panels of arrows for the one that was different and nobody scolded him for the slight residue he left. At the Institute, Constance dropped her human facade in their rooms, too tired to keep it up, especially when broadcasts were occurring. Kate scuttled through the vents on rocky legs, and when she hugged her father for the first time in years cracks formed in their outer shells and the fire that spilled out was brilliant. And Sticky, quite wilted when he first arrived... As he hugged his parents for the first time in ages, everyone crying, Sticky positively bloomed.
The children and their families, a mix of humans and aliens themselves, all moved into the large house and stayed there, even after all the danger had passed. Moocho Brazos, human circus performer and friend of Kate's, was determined to make food that all the aliens of the house could eat, that would meet their nutritional needs and nourish them. If that required making individual dishes for every person in the house, then so be it, he would do it gladly.
Some of these aliens knew of their homeworlds, knew languages and customs and the ways in which they were not like anything humans had ever imagined. But some of them didn't get that. And this led to many research projects, to figure out where in the universe they might be from, to seek out other aliens and ask them about their own lives, to learn each others languages, whether or not human or human-like bodies could reproduce them.
But mostly, they spent their days laughing and talking, and occasionally fighting, though that was mostly when Constance was being especially stubborn; spending time together.
There was a small community in the city of Stonetown, mostly unnoticed by the city at large. But not entirely unknown. There were whispers about these people, who lived in a large rambling house on a quiet street. It was said these people were not from Earth.
The neighbors suspected, but it wasn't an issue. They were all polite, fond of taking walks through the neighborhood, always greeting any neighbors out and about cheerfully, asking after their plants, their children, their jobs, only occasionally referring to others as "humans." Sometimes the smallest child would stare too hard as she passed and a flash of some strange light would appear in her eyes, but then the girl with the bucket would swing her onto her back and the little girl would appear normal again. The strange lights above the house became more common, and sometimes a stray limb that did not resemble a human one would appear in a window. Neighborhood kids would sometimes try to peek through the windows, but mostly that just resulted in them being invited in for tea, or to play tag in the backyard with the house's children. They hosted barbecues for the whole neighborhood, and if some of the plates held things that didn't look like human food, the neighbors would simply skip those dishes. Everything else was delicious.
Eventually the neighbors all headed back to their houses, and it was just them, this group of aliens and a few humans, gazing up at the stars, pointing out where their home systems were, telling any stories they knew and making up new ones together.
This community, this family, had come from so many places, unimaginable distances apart. But they were here now, all together on Earth, their home.

Jerry Springer, the former Cincinnati mayor and talk show host who became one of the most controversial and influential figures in American television, died on Thursday.
His death was confirmed by a family spokesperson who says He died peacefully in his Chicago home.
Springer was best known for his long-running daytime show, The Jerry Springer Show, which debuted in 1991 and ran for 27 seasons until 2018. The show featured guests who revealed their darkest secrets, confessed their infidelities, confronted their enemies and often engaged in physical fights, while Springer moderated the chaos with a mix of humor and empathy.
The show was notorious for its sensationalism, vulgarity and violence, earning Springer the nickname of "the ringmaster of the circus". It also attracted millions of viewers who were either fascinated or appalled by the spectacle of human drama.
Springer defended his show as a form of entertainment and social commentary, saying that he was giving a voice to people who were marginalized and ignored by mainstream media. He also claimed that he did not exploit his guests, but rather helped them resolve their issues.
"I don't judge them. I don't exploit them. I don't tell them what to do. I just listen to them," he said in a 1998 interview with CNN.
Springer's show also inspired several spin-offs, parodies and imitations, as well as a musical, Jerry Springer: The Opera, which won several awards in London. Springer himself appeared in several movies and TV shows, such as Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me, Ringmaster and Dancing with the Stars. He also hosted other shows, such as America's Got Talent, Baggage and Judge Jerry.
Springer was born on February 13, 1944, in London, England, to Jewish refugees who fled Nazi Germany. He moved to the United States with his family when he was five years old and grew up in Queens, New York. He graduated from Tulane University with a degree in political science and from Northwestern University with a law degree.
He began his career as a lawyer and political activist, working for Robert F. Kennedy's presidential campaign in 1968. He ran for Congress in Ohio in 1970 but lost. He was elected to the Cincinnati city council in 1971 but resigned in 1974 after admitting that he had hired a prostitute with a personal check. He later regained his seat and became the mayor of Cincinnati from 1977 to 1978.
He then switched to journalism and became a news anchor and commentator for WLWT-TV in Cincinnati, where he won several awards for his reporting. He also hosted a radio show and a syndicated talk show called The Jerry Springer Show, which was different from his later show of the same name.
In 1991, he moved to Chicago and relaunched his talk show as a more provocative and sensational program, following the success of The Oprah Winfrey Show and The Phil Donahue Show. His show soon became a ratings hit and a cultural phenomenon, making Springer one of the most recognizable and controversial personalities on television.
Springer was married to Micki Velton from 1973 to 1994 and had one daughter, Katie. He was also involved in several charitable causes, such as animal rights, veterans' affairs and children's education.
He is survived by his daughter, his longtime partner Krista Noland and his two grandchildren.

biography.
a middle child belonging to christopher and imogen carmichael - two stanford professors. christopher specialized in british literature whilst imogen specialized in the classics. hence the name.
the order of siblings goes as such: lysander, elektra, juno, philomena, and twins orion & valora. the deal was that everybody had a greek (or in juno’s case, roman) first name and a middle name inspired by a piece of british literature circa 1800s and under. a family of nerds, if you will.
so, clearly - right off the bat, their parents are … eccentric. they’re both in love with their respected topic, and with each other, and with their kids. the carmichael family is a happy family.
they each have their own quirks and whatnot - though philly’s always been particularly dreamy - even as a child, she’d spend hours watching clouds or caterpillars or the leaves blow in the wind rather than play with other kids. she wasn’t a shy kid - she just had her own interests.
hardship doesn’t hit the family until philomena is five and starts having splitting headaches. they’re slow at first - but as soon as she’s seeing spots and unable to walk in a straight line, doctor appointments are made.
it doesn’t take long for them to discover the tumor, though the official diagnosis of malignant ependymoma comes a month later.
it’s grade ii but slow-moving, small enough to not be as much of a threat as worried, but big enough where removal is necessary. philomena earns a scar and brings it in for show-and-tell. for two months afterwards, philly’s at radiotherapy monday through friday.
they’re lucky - philomena’s considered cancer-free by the next year. she’s babied at first - handled delicately, as if she could break if touched - but with five other children … it doesn’t last for too long.
and life continues as normal.
her personality doesn’t shift much over the next few years - she’s awfully independent for a kid, and awfully quiet - when she speaks it’s about faeries and bigfoot, about how the sky is so blue and if you listen quietly, you can hear the leaves whisper their secrets to each other. this is not odd.
she’s close to all her siblings, but she idolizes her older sister - elektra. elektra’s six years older and dyes her hair whatever colors she wants. elektra bought a knife off a seedy guy downtown. elektra threw away all of her heels and renounced god. elektra is god. her music is loud but it’s not heavy - it’s florence and the machine.
they’re opposites - elektra’s boisterous and feels loudly, philomena’s softer and feels…less. when elektra sneaks out, philomena keeps watch. they are a duo.
philomena is smart - but she’s fifteen and hates school. hates sitting inside all day. hates the same routine - day after day - it’s all the same. her parents’ routine is the same, philly feels contained and she wants to live.
elektra’s twenty-one and just bought a brand new spanking (used but not falling apart) 19-something volkswagen … van - using her entire savings account. she says she’s tired of routine, she’s leaving the next day.
naturally, philomena stows away in the back and isn’t discovered until they’re two states away and she’s got to pee. elektra nearly crashes the van in shock.
it’s an argument - philomena vs. elektra, then them vs. their parents, then their parents vs. the school, the state - it’s an ordeal. philomena switches to an online program in the end.
it hurts christopher and imogen - lysander’s not having any of their nonsense, juno’s betrayed and alone - the twins are twins. in the end, it’s alright. the carmichael family is a happy family.
philomena and elektra take their time - it’s not a road trip, it’s their new life, permanently on the road. they stop and explore often - they do odd jobs in whatever town they settle in. they dine-n-dash, they shoplift. they survive in their own way.
during particularly desperate times, they two resorted to identity theft & credit fraud - getting away with it only by ditching the cards once they’ve made it out of state.
she drops out of high school officially when she’s seventeen - they have to drive all the way back to california to deal with the wrath of their parents and to deal with paperwork, but it’s done. philomena doesn’t know what path she wants in life - but it’s not that.
it’s during this time that the episodes occur - philomena’s outside her body, philomena’s wrapped in cotton, her memories are not her own. she’s looking in the mirror and she doesn’t recognize herself. they take shelter in a city for six months, long enough for her brand spankin’ new therapist to figure out what’s wrong with her. she’s diagnosed with depersonalization / derealization disorder - they think it’s stress. philomena doesn’t get stressed. they think it’s trauma. she laughs - she never laughs.
there is trauma though, deep-rooted but somewhere inside - you just have to look for it.
you. just. have. to. look. for. it. look for it. look for it. look for it look for it look -
you were ten and she was thirteen, an off-trail hike in familiar woods in a familiar town, safe and familiar. it was your idea, to stray from the carved out paths, down creeks and up hills and round, and round again. you’re the one who spotted the scarf first, sticking up from the dirt and dancing in the wind like the beginning of reincarnation. it was not reincarnation, it was discovery. it was ruin. with curiosity drawn, you skidded down - with compliance, followed juno, followed your sister - clumsy in her steps and tumbling down quicker than you. you saw the corpse, but juno felt it. decaying flesh and maggot.
and she left juno, just like that - just five years later, when juno had finally gone to the end of her wits. philly up and left. abandoned her.
philomena and elektra leave the city after that therapy session. they do not return. she’s always been good at hiding her secrets.
three years later and her parents want philly to have a higher education - desperate for it, really - worried for her future. it’s a battle that she loses, getting her GED and applying to a local college in florida in shameful compliance.
they’re there for a year until philly gets (expectantly) expelled from the community college & the two of them are banned from the town they’d residing in up until that point. they don’t talk about it - but boy, was it one hell of a time.
they found refuge in lovell, a town that seemed to suit them well - it suited elektra’s desire to travel up and down the east coast, and it intrigued philomena enough to the point of her being content with staying. soon after, philly officially transferred to radcliffe for the fall semester & they’ve been here since!
UPDATE: another summer update! very simple ... she n elektra traveled the states again, as they always do ... like clockwork. had to be dragged back to radcliffe (doesn’t like staying in one place for too long) bt also <3 likes a lot of people here n brought them all souvenirs. it ws very nice! nothing bad.
personality.
she’s quiet but she’s confident - her voice sounds like rustling leaves, if leaves smoked a pack of cigarettes a day.
often underestimated - philly’s petite and looks like she’d fall over if a plastic bag blew too close to her. she’s independent - for the most part. elektra is the only person philly takes orders from.
has always been considered odd - weird, strange. still talks about the trees as if they’re listening, as if they’re old friends. she’s vague and doesn’t elaborate on the things she says.
believes in pretty much any superstition you throw her way. luck is very important to her. if you ask her if the earth is flat, she’ll say probably. believes strongly in bigfoot and the lochness monster. has personally seen aliens, and loves ghosts almost more than herself.
she can be amusing - whether you ‘get’ her or not, her outlook is often bright - she talks about the negatives the same way she talks about the positives. can be seen as naive or gullible, but she’s plenty smart. even if half of her education has come directly from google.
philly doesn’t laugh. a smile, yes - often, in fact - not always reaching her ears, or bearing teeth - but these are not indicators of her happiness. philly is consistently content. she thinks many things are funny - she still will not laugh.
her voice is often monotonous - she doesn’t sound dreary, she sounds far-away. her voice carries. her emotions are often unknown to others.
is apathetic in most situations. she’s hard to bother - she’s incredibly patient and enjoys the company of most - tolerates them at the very least. it’s hard for her to express her emotions, because she feels them so little that it’s very nearly not worth it. her affection is not verbal - it’s small touches and gestures of kindness, love in her own way.
is a fan of knock-knock jokes and bad puns. she won’t crack a smile while telling you them, nor does she expect you to laugh. she just enjoys them.
she owns a motorola razr covered in puffy stickers - hasn’t ever had a smartphone. she’s a fan of emoticons. her favorite is :o)
has a lot of bruises and scratches and scars - she’s often getting herself into pickles. there are always, at the very minimum, three bandaids on each hand.
she has insomnia, so she’s awake often. is often seen wandering town - even when she shouldn’t be, even when it might be dangerous. her intuition is delayed. when she does sleep - her dreams are vivid and fantastical.
keeps a box of memories - sentimental bits and pieces she’s picked up over the last few years. there are a lot of buttons and postcards, but any teeny tiny object will do.
her style changes every week - most, if not all, of her clothes are thrifted. one week she’s baby spice and the next she’s lydia deetz. she combines pieces from different styles often - she looks like a barbie clothed by a child. she feels most comfortable like this.
will either patch-up the clothes that get too worn or reuse them in some way. sometimes donates the clothes she gets tired off - isn’t minimalistic, but she’s learned to keep only a small amount of possessions.
the only consistency is her lucky ribbon - it’s pastel yellow and silky and as thin as a shoelace. she ties it onto her outfit of the day, everyday. if she loses it, she’s lost. elektra has a matching ribbon.
has no problem with minor theft - she only takes bare minimum, puts herself and elektra first and that’s how it’s always been. she tries to be good while in lovell / radcliffe - would hate to be forced out by mobs with torches and pitchforks
currently living in noland while elektra stays in their van, florence - sometimes philly stays there during the weekends.
they used to live in motels on the occasion, the cheapest room, and more often than not they’d both go home with strangers for a comfier bed and a hotter shower.
it was a common occurrence - she didn’t sleep with them - but somehow, she weaseled her way into their homes anyway. has come out mostly unscathed, on most occasions. this has been a practice ever since they’ve been on the road.
really, truly - has not slept with anybody, had her first and only kiss at thirteen with a frog. this doesn’t bother her.
will consume a n y t h i n g you put in front of her - isn’t picky.
listens to whatever they’ve picked up along the way but she likes instrumentals the best. her second favorite genre is 1990′s and 2000′s top hits. they’re nostalgic for her. third favorites? florence, of course. fleetwood mac. the bird and the bee.
loves storms - will go out in the rain and will risk her life for it.
owns a pair of roller-skates and is often skating rather than walking. unless she’s on grass - then she’s walking barefoot.
has many hobbies, and gets bored of them often. her favorite hobby is welding. she’s not certified.
also, juggling.
also, accordion.
the kind of girl who’ll do any job you give her. odd jobs are her favorite jobs. babysitting is her least favorite - but she does it anyway. has lost children before. have they ever been found? not by philly.
dyes her hair blonde often and cuts her own hair - bangs included - finds it cathartic, likes the itchiness of bleach.
everything she does is often in pursuit of feeling free, alive, and meaningful.
( like her frequent visits to the woods, late at night when the moon is high and full. it’s freeing to dance around a fire, stark naked in the cold. builds immunity )
comes and goes wherever she pleases, nothing & nobody can stop her (besides elektra). has befriended the campus witch, or as much as the witch will allow, and shrike as well. she knows to respect nature, and abandoned sites - she’s practically free to explore as she wishes, her only pride is the trust she’s gained.
the trust expands to animals as well, she has a certain knack for getting them to like her. has too many ‘pet’ rats that reside with her, alongside a baby raccoon & a few crow pals. has a new animal companion everyday, but she doesn’t contain them or force them to stay.
leaves her window in noland wide open because of this, because her window is conveniently right besides a tree with sturdy branches. good for animal smuggling, sneaking in and out, hiding, etc. etc. world is her oyster.
though her room in noland is ??? frankly a mess ??? already ??? usually keeps most of her possessions in her memory box but she’s also turned her room into a mini labyrinth of knick-knacks. very cozy, but very nest-like. think of howl’s room from howl’s moving castle.
wanted connections.

Below are links to some posts related to the divorce drama (I’m sure there are more, but if you have never heard of one, I thought the kind thing to do would be to give context):

biography.
a middle child belonging to christopher and imogen carmichael - two stanford professors. christopher specialized in british literature whilst imogen specialized in the classics. hence the name.
the order of siblings goes as such: lysander, elektra, juno, philomena, and twins orion & valora. the deal was that everybody had a greek (or in juno’s case, roman) first name and a middle name inspired by a piece of british literature circa 1800s and under. a family of nerds, if you will.
so, clearly - right off the bat, their parents are … eccentric. they’re both in love with their respected topic, and with each other, and with their kids. the carmichael family is a happy family.
they each have their own quirks and whatnot - though philly’s always been particularly dreamy - even as a child, she’d spend hours watching clouds or caterpillars or the leaves blow in the wind rather than play with other kids. she wasn’t a shy kid - she just had her own interests.
hardship doesn’t hit the family until philomena is five and starts having splitting headaches. they’re slow at first - but as soon as she’s seeing spots and unable to walk in a straight line, doctor appointments are made.
it doesn’t take long for them to discover the tumor, though the official diagnosis of malignant ependymoma comes a month later.
it’s grade ii but slow-moving, small enough to not be as much of a threat as worried, but big enough where removal is necessary. philomena earns a scar and brings it in for show-and-tell. for two months afterwards, philly’s at radiotherapy monday through friday.
they’re lucky - philomena’s considered cancer-free by the next year. she’s babied at first - handled delicately, as if she could break if touched - but with five other children … it doesn’t last for too long.
and life continues as normal.
her personality doesn’t shift much over the next few years - she’s awfully independent for a kid, and awfully quiet - when she speaks it’s about faeries and bigfoot, about how the sky is so blue and if you listen quietly, you can hear the leaves whisper their secrets to each other. this is not odd.
she’s close to all her siblings, but she idolizes her older sister - elektra. elektra’s six years older and dyes her hair whatever colors she wants. elektra bought a knife off a seedy guy downtown. elektra threw away all of her heels and renounced god. elektra is god. her music is loud but it’s not heavy - it’s florence and the machine.
they’re opposites - elektra’s boisterous and feels loudly, philomena’s softer and feels…less. when elektra sneaks out, philomena keeps watch. they are a duo.
philomena is smart - but she’s fifteen and hates school. hates sitting inside all day. hates the same routine - day after day - it’s all the same. her parents’ routine is the same, philly feels contained and she wants to live.
elektra’s twenty-one and just bought a brand new spanking (used but not falling apart) 19-something volkswagen … van - using her entire savings account. she says she’s tired of routine, she’s leaving the next day.
naturally, philomena stows away in the back and isn’t discovered until they’re two states away and she’s got to pee. elektra nearly crashes the van in shock.
it’s an argument - philomena vs. elektra, then them vs. their parents, then their parents vs. the school, the state - it’s an ordeal. philomena switches to an online program in the end.
it hurts christopher and imogen - lysander’s not having any of their nonsense, juno’s betrayed and alone - the twins are twins. in the end, it’s alright. the carmichael family is a happy family.
philomena and elektra take their time - it’s not a road trip, it’s their new life, permanently on the road. they stop and explore often - they do odd jobs in whatever town they settle in. they dine-n-dash, they shoplift. they survive in their own way.
during particularly desperate times, they two resorted to identity theft & credit fraud - getting away with it only by ditching the cards once they’ve made it out of state.
she drops out of high school officially when she’s seventeen - they have to drive all the way back to california to deal with the wrath of their parents and to deal with paperwork, but it’s done. philomena doesn’t know what path she wants in life - but it’s not that.
it’s during this time that the episodes occur - philomena’s outside her body, philomena’s wrapped in cotton, her memories are not her own. she’s looking in the mirror and she doesn’t recognize herself. they take shelter in a city for six months, long enough for her brand spankin’ new therapist to figure out what’s wrong with her. she’s diagnosed with depersonalization / derealization disorder - they think it’s stress. philomena doesn’t get stressed. they think it’s trauma. she laughs - she never laughs.
there is trauma though, deep-rooted but somewhere inside - you just have to look for it.
you. just. have. to. look. for. it. look for it. look for it. look for it look for it look -
you were ten and she was thirteen, an off-trail hike in familiar woods in a familiar town, safe and familiar. it was your idea, to stray from the carved out paths, down creeks and up hills and round, and round again. you’re the one who spotted the scarf first, sticking up from the dirt and dancing in the wind like the beginning of reincarnation. it was not reincarnation, it was discovery. it was ruin. with curiosity drawn, you skidded down - with compliance, followed juno, followed your sister - clumsy in her steps and tumbling down quicker than you. you saw the corpse, but juno felt it. decaying flesh and maggot.
and she left juno, just like that - just five years later, when juno had finally gone to the end of her wits. philly up and left. abandoned her.
philomena and elektra leave the city after that therapy session. they do not return. she’s always been good at hiding her secrets.
three years later and her parents want philly to have a higher education - desperate for it, really - worried for her future. it’s a battle that she loses, getting her GED and applying to a local college in florida in shameful compliance.
they’re there for a year until philly gets (expectantly) expelled from the community college & the two of them are banned from the town they’d residing in up until that point. they don’t talk about it - but boy, was it one hell of a time.
they found refuge in lovell, a town that seemed to suit them well - it suited elektra’s desire to travel up and down the east coast, and it intrigued philomena enough to the point of her being content with staying. soon after, philly officially transferred to radcliffe for the fall semester & they’ve been here since!
personality.
she’s quiet but she’s confident - her voice sounds like rustling leaves, if leaves smoked a pack of cigarettes a day.
often underestimated - philly’s petite and looks like she’d fall over if a plastic bag blew too close to her. she’s independent - for the most part. elektra is the only person philly takes orders from.
has always been considered odd - weird, strange. still talks about the trees as if they’re listening, as if they’re old friends. she’s vague and doesn’t elaborate on the things she says.
believes in pretty much any superstition you throw her way. luck is very important to her. if you ask her if the earth is flat, she’ll say probably. believes strongly in bigfoot and the lochness monster. has personally seen aliens, and loves ghosts almost more than herself.
she can be amusing - whether you ‘get’ her or not, her outlook is often bright - she talks about the negatives the same way she talks about the positives. can be seen as naive or gullible, but she’s plenty smart. even if half of her education has come directly from google.
philly doesn’t laugh. a smile, yes - often, in fact - not always reaching her ears, or bearing teeth - but these are not indicators of her happiness. philly is consistently content. she thinks many things are funny - she still will not laugh.
her voice is often monotonous - she doesn’t sound dreary, she sounds far-away. her voice carries. her emotions are often unknown to others.
is apathetic in most situations. she’s hard to bother - she’s incredibly patient and enjoys the company of most - tolerates them at the very least. it’s hard for her to express her emotions, because she feels them so little that it’s very nearly not worth it. her affection is not verbal - it’s small touches and gestures of kindness, love in her own way.
is a fan of knock-knock jokes and bad puns. she won’t crack a smile while telling you them, nor does she expect you to laugh. she just enjoys them.
she owns a motorola razr covered in puffy stickers - hasn’t ever had a smartphone. she’s a fan of emoticons. her favorite is :o)
