idk if you were around for this but i'm relatively new to the phandom (joined like, last march), so i wasn't exactly around for BIG/COTY. i'm taking a poll of some of the dnp blogs out here in this hellscape just for morbid curiosity: what was your reaction when you first watched the videos? what was the phandoms reaction on your end? thank you so much!! 💕💕

for BIG i!!!!!!! screamed??!!!! i was about to start my shift for work and I was on Tumblr i think? and I saw a screenshot of dan’s tweet and I couldn't believe it so I rushed to twitter and then my heart!!!!! leaped out of my chest!!!!!! i watched like the first two minutes of BIG and then was in a daze for like 6 hours just thinking ‘dan gay dan gay dan gay’ until I could get home and watch it. and then watch its again ,, and again one last time,, instead of writing an essay I had due the next day ✌
so I guess like?? shock but in a joyful sort of way?? i don't think I expected the video at all. for there to be an OVERT declaration like that? never in a million years. if anything I expected something very low key, i mean theyd been leaving us so many hints throughout 2018 [as context my dash before BIG had some talk about glass closets and plausible deniability and privacy] so id assumed this was the best we’d get
there was only support on my dash? from what i saw? maybe the worst was people complaining about other people complaining about things but for the most part it was a celebration!!! sobbing and screaming but like in the best way possible.
for COTY i think i at least sort of saw it coming? Phil’s tweet in response to BIG [the one where he just said he was proud of dan but like.. the vibes] gave me some hope so it was really just a question of if a video (which yknow, may not happen, but was now much more probable), when? watching it very much felt like a warm hug yknow? like, not to be cheesy but my heart actually felt like it grew 10 times its size.
I got to watching it a little later in the day so when i got to tumblr, my dash wasn't nearly as active as it had been for BIG. there were a good amount of gifs but maybe not as many text posts of excitement? but still overall a very very lovely and joyful response
and that's my ramble thanks for asking :). i hope it was interesting or at least insightful in any way
#things im putting in the tags if youd also like to know:#initially there was a lot of “real best friends like actual soulmates“ quotes#but as things settled down there was a lot of reflection on the rest of the video and the hardship dan endured and our ie the phandoms role#which was something to think about for sure also if you congregate all the answers to this in a little research report oh man id definitely#this feels like the fun type of sociology to me :) also there was a lot of things that hit different#and then that became overused so people would start censoring it like h*ts d*fferent or memeing it#mm and yeah there was the vegas trip that was?? kind of weird?? a testing out the boundaries for them and us#dan posted an iconic picture of phil's butt's shadow with the caption 'the kardashians could never' and boy did we lose our minds#yeah thats all <3 ]

I would like to hear more about the trope subversion concept if you want to talk about it.
sure, i can say a couple things about it. there’s not a lot to it other than the fact that there’s a pretty big overlap between people who label themselves as phillies, and people who make everything phil does into a dan thing. they really don’t care about phil unless it has something to do with dan, which at the very least makes you a phannie, but sometimes you can just Tell it goes further than that. and it makes sense. when the phandom really blew up and dan got more popular than phil, a lot of people became protective of phil. not to coddle him necessarily but because so many people on the outside would say phil’s not as hot or funny or smart or whatever the fuck as dan is. or beyond that, they’d say he was ugly and basically nothing compared to dan. which is obviously upsetting if you’re a fan of phil at all, whether you prefer him to dan or not. but i think that led a lot of people who weren’t actually phillies to identify as one anyway just because of that automatic feeling-bad-for-the-underdog instinct. like, intentions were good. it’s just that the cracks in how people really feel about phil vs. how they feel about dan are showing a lot more now that joint content is dead and dan’s rarely active. hope that made sense? it’s not a criticism of anyone’s character, just a little sociological observation.

The wondrously diverse field of ecto-psychology
Okay, so in light of what happened with Butch butchering Jazz’s character i thought it’d be nice to pay tribute to her and examine all the different avenues ghosts and psychology could mix (and how she most definitely was the most influential psychologist of her time by literally inventing an entirely new field). Shoutout to the Psych Majors for Jazz Fenton Association @currently-lurking
So, fair warning, I’m long-winded and im about to info-dump about two of my fav special interests: ghosts and psychology.
Here we go.
So, to start off, let me just say that I have just finished my third year of a bachelors degree in psychology, and im looking into grad school to get a masters/maybe a doctorate. so i do mostly know what im talking about. BUT also seeing as there are apparently plenty of psych majors in the phandom if anybody wants to add on or go in depth in something they specialize in, be my guest. these are just from the areas ive taken classes in.
let’s start off with saying that psychology is more than just therapy and abnormal pathologies. it’s a science! i write a lot of research papers! i was research assistant just last semester! where i helped with experiments! science!
and, honestly, when it comes to the idea of giving ghosts therapy in order to move on... I dont think it would differ much from human therapy, assuming that: the ability to move on implies that they’re human, the brains of ghosts who were once human don’t differ from the brains of humans, there aren’t any long-term effects of ghost socialization on ghosts that were once human, and that the problems of the ghost are rooted within trauma from their human life. Otherwise things would have to be extensively researched in order to give the best care for otherworldly patients!
Which is where the science comes in!! But i havent studied all areas of psych/psych research, so im going to theorize about the areas i do know! which are: humanistic psych, child and adolescent psych, cognitive basis of behavior, social psych, and evolutionary psych! social and evo are my strong points.
so lets talk about evolutionary psychology! this is the field of study that produces research like finding empathy in rats, Ayumu the Chimp has better numerical memory than humans, and stuff about humans too like “gender differences” (but i avoid that and like the stuff about animals more).
So how would scientists in the evo-psych field react to ghosts? First they’d probably flip out. and i mean that. its been a real problem in the field for researchers to acknowledge that animals might even have feelings (since proven that they obviously do), let alone other human-like traits (this is a phenomenon called anthropocentrism, where humans think they’re the best above all else). so a being that is not human but is very much sentient and able to communicate?? absolutely wild. the appearance of ghosts would enthrall behaviorists as an entirely new species! one that also might be closely related to humans!! Now, most ghosts can communicate like humans do and so would be studied by more human-oriented psychologists. but about the things like the ecto-pusses? the blobs? they’re more animal than human as ghosts. or cujo? they’d go nuts.
Do they have feelings? can they think? can they count? what about their memory in general? do they have empathy? can they work together to solve a problem? can they solve puzzles? do they eat??? if so how do they hunt/forage? do they have a complex social structure or are they solitary? semi-social? do the ghosts that reflect a living animal also function like their living counterpart or is there something that sets them completely apart? do they fulfill the criteria for play??? dO THEY REPRODUCE??? (i mean there was lunchbox so??) DO THEY EVOLVE????
also pertaining to this field id like to think that the appearance of ghosts who are obviously sentient and able to communicate with the same language humans do, it would totally blow anthropocentrism out of the water and put smug superior psychologists that dont think animals could ever be on the same level as humans in their place. nyeh. (Anyway anthropocentrism, anthropodenial, and the like are all fascinating things and I really recommend reading Are We Smart Enough to Know How Smart Animals Are? by Frans De Waal, a very good read in easy access language with cool animal facts and my professor Dr. Burghardt is even mentioned in it!)
and honestly this is getting so long im just gonna cover social psych
Anyway. So! social psych is the wonderful love child of psychology and sociology and as my professor puts it, psych studies the individual, sociology studies social structures and social psych studies how social structures effect the individual! social psychology puts out research like: the famous milgram experiment, how to reduce prejudice, and stuff about lying. the stuff about prejudice is where my professor specialized and i was even a research assistant for one of his grad students! (facial expression versus race processing).
okay, so. ghosts. oh man there’s so many questions. social wise. do they have a social structure? do they have implicit prejudices as a result of that structure? i mean there was a ghost king so? how does their social structure differ from ours? do they have different cultures? do they have subcultures within their main culture? is there an identity they associate with being a ghost thats separate from their personal identity? do they have the same obedience to authority as we do? (they have a prison and walker obviously, but they also have jailbreaks all the time apparently). do they lie? are they good at detecting lies? are they socialized to be a ghost or are some traits innate?? do you have instincts and drives that make you want to scare humans or are you socialized to do so? can ghosts overcome that? could they fully integrate into human society if both humans and ghosts use the steps to reduce prejudice? do they form groups? attachments?
there are things i need to know okay.
basically the introduction of ghosts would probably create a split in psychology wherein the whole field of research is re-created. but for ghosts. its fascinating.
i mean there’s also psych questions in general about ghosts.
how does death affect their psyche? their thoughts and feelings and identity? especially in the case of formerly-human ghosts. do they retain all the memories of their life as human? to they only retain major memories? does this affect their memory, identity, or mental health?? do ghosts have an innate instinct to cause fear in humans or is this some form of socialized prejudice or maybe is this a result of acting out on trauma faced before death? do ghosts literally even have brains?????? does ectoplasm do anything to their brain if they have one since it functions as their blood? are their effects on humans from long-term exposure to ectoplasm? are ghosts that are born ghosts different from ghosts that died human?
i dunno there’s a whole bunch more but its 2am so bye for now

Floating Stars AU
I realized that I haven't really explained what this AU is about when I started posting random things about my notes.
As tomorrow I'll be sharing about Dora and Aragon, I thought maybe it would be a good idea to explain what's going on.
Basically, what if instead of Sam and Tucker being there for the accident it's Star. (with Jazz getting involved from the get go due to bad timing)
It started as a canon divergence tbh but I got frustrated with canon's inconsistencies and so I decided that this idea was super indulgent anyways and wrote my own lore.
I'm not sure what to share as I have a lot of notes for this au so I'll just share the parts I'm excited about tho there's little set in stone rn
(Warning its kinda long and spoiler-ish under the cut)
I'm too hyped about character dynamics to think up a plot so there's none so far, just a lot of things I want to happen
There's a lot of focus on the importance of the symbiosis between the ghost zone and the real world later on
And the complicated dynamic between ghosts and humans too
It kinda follows the show's plot vaguely? Except the fact it quickly goes off the rails
Starting with how Danny sucks at keeping the accident (and his powers) a secret until Star teaches him how to lie convincingly, so everyone at school knows something's going on with Danny
Until then, Star's the one doing damage control as the queen of gossip
Star and Danny doesn't get along at first as Star is trying to maintain her fragile status quo with her double life (her self esteem and her parents are a big thing of her arc) so she ignores Danny and her own guilt about her hand in the matter. If she hadn't startled him, he'd be alive
On the other hand, Danny is trying to avoid thinking about everything and its implications, no matter how much Jazz thinks she's helping with making him talk about how traumatizing it must've been. He's enough of a freak already no need to add ghost on that list. And he can't erase from his mind Star's horrified look. How could anyone accept this?
The whole idea of the fic is for everyone to go thru changes and how growing up can be difficult + everyone gets a character arc
there was an incident where Jazz almost died at the beginning while trying to help in a fight so Danny is stubborn in not getting anyone involved from then on (he doesn't get quite the same backup in fights as canon so he has to get creative in a lot of ways)
Jazz and Star had to beat this idea out of his thick head
bc of the accident, Sam and Tucker give Danny some space as they think he's still affected by it but they quickly regret it once Danny seems to grow distant over time.
In the whole story, Sam and Tucker are the only ones he willingly tells the truth and even then, its only after Danny already had a handle on himself and his powers for a while
Their friendship is never quite the same as before but they're adamant to try in spite of everything (they learn to be best friends again)
Danny doesn't have a ghost sense specific to his ice core but he learned to understand the new senses that came with being a ghost after a while so he can kinda tell when a ghost is nearby (tho nothing as directly or instantaneous as his canon ghost sense)
btw, cores are the embodiment of their strongest feelíng at the moment of "ghost birth" turned literal defense mechanism to help the ghost keep existing so the reason Danny got an ice core is bc he was paralyzed with so much fear that it literally froze him. (This has repercussions almost instantly afterwards)
Also, Danny and Jazz were kinda forced to learn engineering as Danny kept showing up as a ghost in their parents inventions and that's just a one way ticket to getting killed in this au (with how ghost hunting works here)
I'll explain the ecto-contamination in another post as this is already too long
Ghosts are less "absolute evil" as the show wanted to paint them and more just them doing their own thing and not really noticing the humans / forgetting how fragile and squishy they are + ghost morality is different from humans
They're all surprised about this baby ghost trying to fight them and shocked at how he's not even stabilized yet despite the fact he seems too solid
Clockwork's still a thing and Danny ends up as his protégé after he semi absorbs a CW medallion by accident (Dan isn't a thing but something else does happen)
During this, Danny finds Danielle

I’m so excited to be seeing/meeting all of you, because being an “adult” whose main interest is Youtubers means your peers don’t usually quite understand… But you guys do, so I know I’m not alone!
My name is Rachel, I’m 24, and I’m from Virginia. I have a bachelor of arts in Journalism and a bachelor of science in Sociology, with a concentration on social inequality. Definitely still figuring out what exactly I’m doing with that particular combination, so I’ll get back to you on that… haha
I’ve been watching D&P since about my junior year of college, so probably about four or five years now. I really, truly wish I had found them sooner though. That end-of-highschool/beginning of college time would have been so much easier of I had Phil’s smiling face and Dan’s relateable college experience to look to… But, I am so, so happy that I have them (and you guys!) in my life now!
I saw Tatinof in May 2016 (shoutout to anyone else at the Charlotte, NC show!) and it was honestly the most fun I’ve ever had (*insert cheesy reference here*). And yes, I did, as a 23 year old, take my mother with me. We actually had a lot of fun together, even if she did spend the whole car ride calling them “Phil and Dan” just to get on my nerves.

oh it's so interesting to see it from your perspective, cause I started watching dnp during lockdown, even though i'd obviously known of them before, i had always always known them as out queer men. so i never had that experience of hesitation, or doubt for the lack of a better word, around those kinds of discourses. catching up on a lot of it was def interesting, since i had no new content to catch up to as such, and i could really delve into every single piece of content, and see why people were making certain conclusions at that time, but also just being aware(tm) of the actual outcome. like the tabinof/tatinof announcement, moving out of the first london apartment, alongside the regular fandom discourse of are they or are they not, with waves of opinions that you could see mature with time.
oh yeah for sure, although my own perspective is quite different from The Traditional Phannie Experience lol, like i really wasn't There for a lot of this i just have a lot of free time and do a lot of reading lol.... like if i were to count how many years i was Actively Watching dnp (not even necessarily phannie) it's like, 2012-2014 2017-2018 and then 2023. so like six years LMAOO. but yeah i think thats why i got so into the like sociology of this specific fandom and seeing how it's changed and grown both from watching on the outskirts (being on tumblr but not engaging w yall) as well as hearing friends' own personal experiences with being in the phandom twitter and instagram and VINE?? also i think smth abt me getting into dnp once i was already an adult as well as having had fandom experiences that kinda got me to step back and view creators more objectively kinda shaped how i talk abt em as well :)
