Perfect On the Surface - Chapter Eleven
Elegance is key. If you don't have elegance how can you accompany a man who is rich by inheritance.
“What should I wear?” I asked Liam who was picking out an outfit for himself.
“Just wear something causal.” He said shrugging his shoulders.
“Where are we even going Mr. Vague?” I asked crossing my arms.
“We’re going to Troyes.” He said putting on a black belt. Troyes was the most expensive restaurant on campus. The only reason Waver had the restaurant was to thank their sponsors and donators, because the rest of us sure as hell couldn’t afford it, not with the pretty price tag tuition had.
“Liam! I can’t just dress up causal for Troyes!” I shouted searching through the closet where I had recently cleared out half of Liam’s things and put my own.
“Just wear whatever. We have to leave in half an hour.” He said leaving the room for me to get ready.
After ten minutes of searching I finally found the perfect dress. It was red with a sweetheart neckline but had red lace covering up to my collarbone.
I put on some black wedge heels and started on my make-up. I opted out of anything fancy and just lined my waterline with a black swipe of eyeliner, traced my eyelashes with mascara and put on a nice red lipstick.
I grab my black leather clutch and ran downstairs. Liam was wearing a suit jacket but had on jeans to make him look more causal. I suddenly felt overdressed but I wasn’t about to walk into Troyes with jeans on.
Liam looked me up and down. “You look beautiful.” I raised my eyebrow and narrowed my eyes. Liam never just said things like that. I looked on the other side of the room and sure enough Niall was in the living room with Harry. They were playing guitars practicing for something I assumed.
“My parents are going to love you.” Liam said looping his arm in mine.
When we got outside it was extremely cold. I never got over the weather in Leicester, always cold and rainy. It was nothing like Orlando and my natural tan was fading with every day I spent here.
“You’re a good actor.” I said looking up at him. He gave me a small smirk but when I looked in his eyes it looked like he wanted to say something but he thought better of it.
“Well Niall was right there I had to put on a good show.” He said giving me a wink.
When we made it to Troyes it was just like I remembered it being in the brochures I received first year. It looked like a mansion from the outside but was actually a restaurant. It had been a frat house for the most elite at Waver about 50 years ago but then was converted when those students became wealthy and donated to the University.
“I don’t want to go in.” I said taking a deep breath while we walked up the front stairs. Liam took my hand and forced me to face him.
“It will be fine. Just act like we have been dating for a while, you were in my bed after all.” He said shaking his head at the memory.
I hit him playfully on the shoulder. “You wouldn’t wake up!” I yelled. Liam raised his eyebrow and gave me a smirk as he held the door open for me.
“It’s under Payne.” He said to the hostess ending our conversation. We followed the hostess to the table which was in the middle of the restaurant. Liam’s dad stood up and shook his hand while his mom got up and waited for Liam to give her a hug. When she did Liam turned to me and wrapped a hand around my waist.
“This is Analeigh.” Liam said using my first name instead of my middle name which everyone called me. I gave Liam’s dad a handshake as well as his mother.
When I sat down Liam’s dad shook his head. “You didn’t even push in the chair for your lady.” He said tsking. Liam blushed at that and I couldn’t help but smile. Over the year of knowing Liam I had never seen him blush before.
“Dad, don’t make me look bad.” He said giving his father a smile small.
“Oh you two stop it. She is sitting that is all that matters.” His mother said looking down at the menu. When we had order our meals I just got a small plate of crab cakes while Liam settled with the same soup his mother and father ordered.
“So how did you two meet?” His mother asked while we waited for the food to arrive.
“It isn’t that interesting.” I said looking at Liam who smiled to reassure me. “It was my first day of classes and I sat right in the middle of the classroom and Liam sat right beside me. After that we sat beside each other every day and the rest is history.” I grabbed Liam’s hand squeezing it.
“It was interesting to me.” Liam said taking his hand back. “She stood out like a sore thumb because she was wearing a tie dyed tank top, meanwhile it was still pretty cold out. So I sat beside her thinking that she would be interesting. At the end of class, I don’t know if you remember this.” He said looking at me and smiling.
“I tried to give you my jacket and you rejected me saying it wouldn’t match your outfit.” He said shaking his head while he rubbed his temples.
“I don’t remember that at all.” I said whispering in Liam’s ear as our meals had arrived.
“I didn’t make it up if that is what you’re asking.” He said with a smirk.
“Where are you from?” Liam’s dad asked as he took a sip of his wine glass. I had opted out of drinking anything in order to make a good impression on Liam’s parents who already knew I was sleeping in the same bed as their son.
“I’m from U.S., Orlando Florida to be specific.” I said focusing on my crab cakes that were delicious.
“Did your parents move with you?” Liam’s dad asked and I tensed at the question. My demanding mother hadn’t wanted to come and I wasn’t even sure if my dad knew I was even here. Liam seemed to notice my mood swing and changed the subject.
“She got a full ride to Waver, she is by herself but she is adjusting quite well.” Liam said taking a spoonful of his soup. “She is pretty much the mom of the house.” He said laughing.
My eyes widened as did his mothers. “Oh so you live together?” She said clearing her throat. Liam looked at me than back to his mother and nodded.
“That is quite serious Liam.” She said whispering as if I wasn’t at the table. “We don’t even get to know you have a girlfriend but now she is living with you. I guess that explains why she answered your phone.” She said shaking her head.
The waiter came by and I ordered a glass of wine. If I was going to get through this lunch I was going to need some liquid encouragement. “Liam, you know what your mother is trying to say. We want you to be with someone who is in the same group as us.” He said looking at me with a smile that was full of pity.
“What do you mean by the same group?” I chimed in crossing my arms. Liam took my hand and interrupted me.
“He doesn’t mean anything.” He said giving his dad a death stare. I had never seen Liam so tense before.
“Liam let’s not sugar coat it someone who knows our lifestyle and can accompany you.” He said looking to Liam with sad eyes.
“With elegance.” His mom chimed in and I swear my jaw dropped. Did they know who I was? I studied elegance for years while competing. Not the mention the fact that they had just both called me poor. Maybe it was because I wasn’t wearing name brands or wasn’t dripping in jewellery but these people knew nothing about me. Meanwhile I wasn’t actually dating their son so they didn’t know him very well either.
“You’re right Mrs. Payne. I think we should just end this here Liam. I’m very sorry I have wasted your time.” I said curtseying to them. If they wanted to act like they were royal that was how I was going to treat them. I practically ran out of there I was so furious.
Liam came running out as I was already at the bottom of the stairs. I turned in the opposite direction to find Niall and Blondie walking hand in hand who were headed my way.
“I’m so sorry.” Liam said when he caught up to me but I interrupted him by kissing him on the lips and acting as if it was the best kiss ever.
I whispered in his ear before we separated “Niall is right there.” I nodded in his direction. He smiled and pretended to act as if we were the perfect couple before Niall and Blondie were out of our sights. There was no question Niall had seen us because he texted me moments later.
1:36pm Get a room.
This was actually working and I couldn’t believe it. Liam looked down at me with a serious face. “We don’t have to do this anymore. I can’t believe my parents said that to you.” He said shaking his head.
“Liam its working, we can’t stop now.” I said showing him the text. Liam gave me a small nod and put his hand on the small of my back. “Well in that case can you come back inside?” He said but there was no way I was going to play nice if I went back in there.
“Liam I don’t want to play pretend with your parents. They’re horrible actually.” I said putting my hands on my hips trying to stand my ground.
“You will if you want me to be your boyfriend in front of Niall.” He said narrowing his eyes.
I threw my hands up. “Why do you need a girlfriend anyway?” I asked following him back up the stairs.
“My parents like to pick who I date, it’s always been that way and you kind of screwed things up with answering that phone. Now my parents think I’m just goofing off and ignoring their wishes so you can’t just be a fling you have to be my girlfriend, or else my parents are going to pull the funding on my spending money, the money that pays for our house.” Liam said rubbing the back of his neck with his hand.
“Wait your parents pay for the whole house?” I asked stopping him.
“Yeah the boys stay for free because my parents have met all of them and approve. This is why my mother was so upset about you living with me, without permission.” He said shrugging. “So please can you just sit there and act like the best girlfriend anyone could ever have?” He asked with a huge smile.
“Fine but if your mom says I’m not elegant again I’m pulling the pageant card.” I said rolling my eyes joining the table where Liam’s parents looked more than disappointed to see me back.

Perfect On the Surface - Chapter Nine
Where Niall gets drunk, Skye fights with well everyone, and Liam gets a little wet.
He turned around and grabbed my arms to push me back in the room. He leaned against the now shut down while he pinched the bridge of his nose. “Harry what’s going on?” I said trying to get him to look at me.
He shook his head and threw up his hands up. “Niall is mad at you and he’s drunk.” Harry said pacing the room. “How and the hell can he be mad at me! I’m the one who should be mad.” I said as I opened the door quickly before Harry could stop me.
I grabbed Niall’s hand and led him into his room ignoring the protests from Liam who had been trying to calm Niall down. He pulled his hand away from me as if it was drenched in poison when the door was shut.
“You wanted to talk, so let’s talk!” I yelled at him as I crossed my arms across my chest. “Why don’t we talk about the fact that you slept with me while you had a girlfriend?” I asked walking up to him and poking him in the chest.
“Or the fact that we haven’t been the same since that night because you shut me out?” I asked running my hand through my hair.
“And you’re this angel?” Niall said stepping closer to me. “You act like this innocent little girl when everyone knows you’re bloody shagging Liam and Harry!” He said shaking his head.
“You can’t be serious right now!” I screamed, I couldn’t help it I was frustrated and nothing I was saying was getting through to him. “I can’t believe you just said that.” I said heading toward the door. He raced up to me and spun me around pinning me against the door.
“I really meant that little to you.” He said letting go of the hold he had on me slightly. My heart broke at his words. He leaned into me and I moved my face toward his. Our lips collided and his hands ran up my hips.
I pushed him away, breathing heavily. “Niall you’re drunk.” I said and he whipped his bottom lip with his thumb and index finger.
“I think you should leave.” He said calmly as I grabbed the door handle before I could pull it open he added. “I don’t just mean my room, I mean my house.” He said crossing his arms over his chest.
I glanced over my shoulder and smirked at him. “Unfortunately that’s not up to you.” I said leaving not even bothering to look back at his expression that was probably full of hate.
The next day consisted of me trying to avoid Liam and now Niall after last night. It wasn’t so easy when they lived across the hall, or when one of them happened to be in class today.
I had successfully gotten out of the house this morning without running into both of them. My luck changed when I got to class and seen Liam was already sitting in his usual spot. He gave me a small wave and I pretended not to see him.
I sat beside a girl who was slim and brown skinned. She wore glasses and was sat in a few rows behind Liam. “Wow, you must be mad at him.” The girl said beside me. I looked up at her and narrowed my eyes confused about what she was taking about. I continued unpacking my stuff while she spoke. “That guy over there.” She said pointing to Liam with her pen.
“How did you know that?” I asked looking at her as she pushed up her thick framed glasses. “I’m sorry, my name is Priyal.” She said putting her hand out for me to shake so I did. “Skye.” I said and she nodded quickly.
“I know your name. I also know that you have sat beside that boy for the last year or so, which is why you must be mad at him.” She said logically. I chuckled “You sure do know a lot.” I said looking to the front of the class because Mr.Dax had just arrived.
She whispered “I just call it as I see it. By the way if it has anything to do with that presentation you shouldn’t be mad.” I looked at her with my jaw slightly open, this girl really knew a lot she would make a great psychologist one day.
“I shouldn’t be mad?” I asked with a smile on my face. She took this as an indication to keep talking and voicing her opinion. “Well it is obvious he fancies you a lot to make a project about how beautiful you are.” She said smiling down at Liam who was now looking at us.
“That’s crazy. He doesn’t fancy me at all.” I said giving Liam a small smile. But Priyal didn’t get a chance to say anything else because class started.
When class had finally ended and I felt like I couldn’t bear to look at another word in a textbook or I would pass out from exhaustion. So I headed to Grinds, the only place that could keep me going.
The line was so long my heart dropped. I would have to wait until I got my coffee fix.
Laini waved me over near the front of the line. I ran up to her and gave her a hug. “Thank god, I was beginning to worry I would just have to buy your coffee.” Laini said loud so those behind us could hear.
They looked a little less pissed off about me skipping the line but what Laini said had calmed them down some. It was like they were vampires in line for blood and well the hipsters were alright with letting their teeth come out if need be, I was surprised they hadn’t hissed at me yet.
“Thanks, you have no idea how much I was dreading the line.” I said looping my arm in hers. “Don’t mention it.” She said squeezing my arm.
Once we had gotten our drinks, mine being a Vanilla Latte and Lainis being a Vanilla Bean Frappuccino we settled into a booth in the corner. We didn’t get a chance to catch up because Liam came in and made a beeline for our table.
I sighed and put down my latte, caffeine would have to wait. “Skye, can I talk to you?” He asked and I nodded grabbing his arm and leading him out of Grinds and by the fountain.
“What do you want Liam.” I said crossing my arms over my chest. “I miss you. I made a mistake that I didn’t realize was so bad until I thought about myself being in that position. I would hate to be called out like that in front of everyone and I’m sorry.” He said running his hand behind his neck.
“I just want to know why you did it Liam.” I said letting my arms fall. I was no longer angry looking at how upset this made him. “I like you Skye and I wanted you to see how beautiful you were no matter how much stuff…” He didn’t get to finish because I pushed him in the fountain.

Perfect On the Surface - Chapter Eight
A/N Listen to the music and it will feel like you're really there!
In which Niall doesn't snap out of it, Liam snaps, and Harry becomes a friend.
I jumped up and down to the lyrics that were so true to my current situation with Niall.
I wanna grab both your shoulders and shake baby
Snap out of it
I get the feeling I left it too late but baby
Snap out of it
If that watch don’t continue to swing
Or the Fat lady fancies having a sing
I’ll be here
Waiting here ever so patiently for you to
Snap Out Of it
I wished Niall would just snap out of it. What did she have that I didn’t besides her obvious larger chest and ass? I danced closer to the stage pushing my way through the crowd but I was pulled to the side by Liam.
“You said an hour and it’s been that, so we need to leave.” He said dragging me along with him. I looked back at the stage trying to mentally take a picture of the image, but I knew I wouldn’t be able to remember how close I had been to one of my favourite bands.
He led me back to the group and Laini was dancing on a nearby picnic table with a cute stranger. I waved at her with my free hand and she jumped down off the table and came running to me.
“No you can’t leave I haven’t even seen you.” She said which had been true. I wasn’t really in the talking mood after seeing Niall with Blondie.
“That’s right you know, Liam I have to stay Laini needs some quality girl time, just look at that face.” I said lifting up her chin with my hand as she stuck out her lips in a pout.
“Skye, you promised.” Liam said letting go of my arm. He was always the responsible one and I knew we probably should get back but this would probably be the only time a concert as big as this one would be on campus and I wanted to take advantage of that.
“If you promised him you have to go.” I heard Niall say as he made his way over to us, thankfully without any company. I rolled my eyes and turned back towards Liam. “I promise we can do this all day tomorrow, just let me stay.” I said blinking my eyelashes up at him.
“Don’t let her trick you.” Niall said sipping his beer. “Excuse me, was I talking to you?” I said crossing my arms across my chest. Niall put his hands up in surrender but still looked at me sideways like he was trying to figure me out.
“What’s wrong with you?” Niall asked as Blondie approached us hugging Niall from behind. She waved at us but I didn’t bother with pleasantries there was no way we were going to get along. Ever.
“I just can’t believe you two have been off and on for such a long time.” I said with a fake grin plastered on my face. “That’s a pretty big secret.” I said looking at Niall who tensed at the subject.
His fists tightened and his patience with me was thinning, but I didn’t care I was furious. “I think you should go sober up with Liam, at Grinds.” He said nodding to Liam who grabbed my hand and started dragging me away.
“Have a fun night.” I said saluting him with my pointer and middle finger. “Did you seriously just salute him?” Liam said when we were back on the sidewalk to Grinds.
“I’m not in the mood right now Liam.” I said pulling my hand out of his grip. “Skye.” He said stopping me from walking so he could look at me. “Do you have feelings for Niall.” He said and I nodded my head slowly.
“Liam, I tried to play it off like it was nothing but I like him. I like him a lot actually but no, he has been a relationship for a year! A year! Sorry if I’m a little snappy.” I said taking a breath and looking at the ground.
“Come here.” Liam said pulling me in for a hug, but I didn’t cry better yet I couldn’t cry if I forced myself to because it was so surreal that Niall would even do this. I thought we told each other everything but I guess I was wrong.
“We should just go home.” I said to Liam as he rubbed my back softly. “Fine, but tomorrow we’re doing homework all day, no expectations.” He said smiling as we walked back to the house in silence.
The next day consisted of Liam breathing down my neck to get my homework done, which worked but that’s beside the point. He also didn’t talk about Niall the whole day which I appreciated it already took up enough of my mind, I didn’t need someone bringing it up and it being the only thing I thought about.
But when Monday came around Harry didn’t mind bringing it up. I had convinced Laini and him to join my psychology class so they could see my project. Mr.Dax was presenting the projects and giving feedback and even though mine was rushed I still felt proud of my work. So Liam and I snuck them in and we sat at the back not to draw attention to ourselves.
“You know you should just talk to him about it.” Harry whispered while the presentations had started. “I don’t want to talk to him at all.” I whispered back. “I feel responsible for this. I told you about them which by the way Niall wasn’t very happy about.” He said rubbing his forehead.
“Unless you were the one who lied about being single I don’t think you’re responsible Harry.” I said to him giving him a small pat on the back. When my presentation came up it went wonderfully. Mr.Dax was impressed about how I used the perception of a person watching a concert, in which I used a picture from the concert on the weekend.
Harry and Laini gave me high fives and I felt like I actually liked psychology for once. Until Liam’s project came up I officially hated it.
It was a picture of me from one of my beauty contests. Mr.Dax explained Liam’s project in detail. “This was by far the best one I seen. It shows a girl who is beautiful on the outside.” He said and turned the slide to show the next picture which was me drinking at the concert yesterday. “But deep down this girl is something different. She is just a girl who has problems and puts on a fake smile to hide those problems. A true perception deviation, you think you know her one minute but she can easily change how she is to help her succeed. Great work Liam.” He said while I sat there speechless.
“What the hell was that!” I said to Liam when we got outside of the building. “It was great wasn’t it?” Liam said looking at Laini and Harry for support but they ignored him, Harry gave him a small smile. “You publicly humiliated me for a grade Liam. Why would you do that?” I said as clenching my fists.
“Skye, I thought you would like it!” He said throwing his hands up defeated. “Like it? Are you kidding me? Liam you basically called me pretty on the outside but ugly on the inside.” I said pointing at him. “I’m sorry you see it that way.” He said seeing how hurt I was.
“It’s the way everyone has seen it. I can’t even talk to you right now.” I said turning away and heading to Grinds for the rest of the night where I could avoid having to sleep in the same bed with a man who didn’t understand that I didn’t like the attention. I hated it in fact, especially when it called me out for being broken.
When I finally got home I went straight to Harry’s room and knocked on his door. He opened it and it looked like he had been sleeping already since he was in sweats. And only sweats. I made sure to keep my eyes on his face rather than on his bare chest.
“Can I stay with you tonight?” I asked and he nodded letting me in. His room was nothing sterile like Liam’s or messy like Niall’s but instead had guitars along the way with posters of jazz and rock musicians. Everything else was neat and tidy, in its place with funky colours and labels.
I crawled under his comforter and tried to stay on my side of his queen sized bed. “Are you still upset?” He asked to break the silence. “Yeah, I don’t think Liam understands I don’t want to be picked apart as a project, I get enough of that from my mother.” I said laughing without humor. Harry pulled me close into his side and hugged me tight. “He was trying to do something nice for you but he went about it the wrong way. Liam wouldn’t hurt you on purpose.” He said kissing me on the top of my head. He let me go quickly realizing what he was doing. “Sorry.” He said moving back to his side of the bed.
“It’s ok and hey Harry.” I said turning on my side. “Thanks for being such a good friend.” I said smiling as I drifted off in to a long deep sleep.
A/N- Ahh I know this was a long chapter but things get crazy from here and this chapter did all the setting up! I will be updating again in a few minutes here because it is a double update!!
Also Liam WTFFF!

Chapter Seven - Perfect on The Surface
A/N - Listen to "R U Mine." by the Artic Monkeys to increase the amount of feels.
In which the Artic Monkeys perform and Skye will do anything to see them, until she actually gets there.
I tore my gaze from my table and checked my cellphone. I figured texting Laini would be better than dragging her away from the table. I stopped mid searching because I remembered she hadn’t actually given me her number.
I put my phone down on the table and began tapping my foot. What if she didn’t care if he was my ex? I knew one thing she would care about, that it was him who kicked me out of his car which lead to Laini and I meeting under, unwelcome circumstances.
I took a deep breath and sipped my coffee while thinking of a plan. I didn’t have to think hard for long because Harry walked in. I waved him over frantically as he made eye contact with me and rushed over, putting his hands on the back of the empty car Laini was just in.
“What’s the matter with you, you’re all jumpy.” He said looking at me with as he raised an eyebrow. He clenched his jaw like he just remembered he wasn’t supposed to talk to me. “Look over there.” I said pointing in that direction with a nod of my head trying not to draw more attention from the onlookers who had already saw me waving like a maniac.
“You can take care of things yourself quite well.” He said with a small smile that didn’t reach his eyes. But before he turned towards the coffee counter he squinted his eyes slightly “Because we will never be friends, that would be plain mad.” He said turning away from me and just like that, my brilliant plan was shattered by the same words I used while I was drunk.
“Wanker.” I whispered under my breath as I brought my attention back to Chad and Laini. I took two deep breaths and then walked up to their table which was quite close, so there was no backing out now.
I crossed my arms when I reached the table and waited for their conversation to stop. Laini looked up at me with big eyes that seemed to say not now and slowly shook her head.
“Are you by chance stalking me?” Chad said leaning back in his chair. I uncrossed my arms and laid my hands firm on the table leaning in closer to him. “Oh Chad, don’t flatter yourself. By the way I got home fine the other day.” I said not breaking my stare.
“That was you!” Laini yelled and pointed at Chad while she got up off her seat. “I’m sure she only told you one side of the story, if you just sit down I can tell you the rest..” He said motioning for Laini to sit back down but instead she pushed the chair in.
“No because I’m sure you didn’t know she was almost taken by two guys, when you left her wondering the streets blackout drunk, yeah? Bet you didn’t know that.” She said looping her arm through mine before turning back around quickly to get her coffee.
But instead of taking it with her, she poured it on his lap. He jumped up and out of his seat brushing off the coffee while he did somewhat of a dance from the hot liquid. I put my hand over my mouth as Laini lead me out of Grinds, I stared at him over my shoulder and he looked back at me not with angry but with guilt.
When the weekend came around I had two papers that needed to be written by Monday along with a project about a person’s perception. Most of these assignments were assigned last Monday but since I had skipped that day I didn’t think I missed anything when the professor didn’t mention it.
I only heard about these assignments on Friday when a girl I didn’t know from the front row asked a few clarifying questions about them. If I could’ve felt Liam’s stare, it would’ve burned like hell. Since I had told him he missed nothing.
This was what led to the both of us sitting at Grinds at the corner both while Laini and my roommates got ready for the concert that was being held on campus. The student association had somehow convinced the Artic Monkeys to come and play at the annual Waver Beer Gardens, only adding insult to injury.
“I’m done. I think my brain is fried.” I said while pushing my laptop shut. Liam looked like I felt, his eyes still glued to his screen. “Liam we’re going to that concert.” I said waving a hand in from of his face. He blinked several times before looking at me. “We could’ve gone if you weren’t so keen on getting revenge on Monday.” He said referring to the incident with Laini spilling the coffee on Chad. Though Harry was talking to me still, he was sure telling everyone what went down at Grinds that day.
“It wasn’t planned trust me, but if we can go for like an hour I will stop bugging you.” I said clasping my hands and leaning in close to him. “Liam I’m seconds away from throwing coffee on my laptop, please!” I yelled grabbing onto his arm.
He nudged me off of him and a smile appeared on his face. “An hour is it, and then we’re back here.” He said and I nodded quickly at him packing up my stuff before he changed his mind.
I checked my phone when we walked to the other side of campus. I had a missed call and some texts from Laini.
9:01pm I swear to god if Liam doesn’t let you go I will bust you out of Grinds myself.
9:12pm I’m going to have to come down there aren’t I?
9:14pm I’m going to buy a coffee just to spill it on him. You can tell him that!
9:15pm Save your money. I’m on my way, see you in like 5.
I put my phone back in my pocket. I was glad that I dressed in skinny jeans, my red converse and a black tank top that had a red elephant on it. Flip flops or heels definitely wouldn’t have gone over well at a concert.
When we finally got near the stage music filled the air, it was an opening band I didn’t know but they had a good sound. Liam grabbed my hand as we weaved in an out of concert goers and into the fenced area of the beer gardens.
Laini was in a drinking competition with Louis. It looked like she was winning too. Louis reached over and tickled her with his free hand and she spit out her beer all over the place. “You cheating bastard.” She said splashing some beer on him. “You never said anything about sabotage.” Louis said with a cheeky smirk.
I grabbed a beer from a nearby booth and thanked the worker. “Louis is always a cheater.” I said sticking my tongue out at him. He gave me a fake shocked look before joining Zayn on the other side of the tent.
Laini put an arm around Liam who leaned away from her. “I’m glad you chose to let your prisoner out.” She said and I couldn’t help but laugh. She was beyond wasted and it made her speak her mind even more than usual.
Laini waved to the other side of the gardens where Harry and Niall just walked in but they weren’t alone, Niall was holding hands with a tall tanned girl with blonde hair.
But I didn’t really have time to think much about it, because the concert was starting and I needed to get another drink.
A couple drinks in I was feeling better about the Niall situation. After so many times denying I had any feelings for him I couldn’t help but feel jealous he was here with another girl. He was being his typical flirty self and I thought I might throw up looking at them.
The strum of a guitar started and everyone cheered as the band walked on stage. They started playing “R u Mine.” and everyone went crazy. I couldn’t help but notice the way Blondie jumped up and down holding onto Niall’s arm, her lights lite up.
And I go crazy cause here isn’t where I wanna be
And satisfaction feels like a distant memory
And I can’t help myself
All I wanna hear her say is “Are you mine?”
Are you mine
I was shaken from my thoughts when Harry came behind me and whispered in my ear. “You’re staring.” He said with a chuckle and I turned around to face him. I crossed my arms across my chest, “So you’re talking to me now?” I said raising my eyebrow.
“I tried to talk him out of bringing her here but he was all “Skye doesn’t even care, we’re just friends with some occasional benefits.” but obviously you do care.” He said looking toward the happy dancing couple.
“Are they a thing?” I yelled attracting the attention of Liam who gave me a small smile out of sympathy. Harry nodded slowly, “Yeah they have been a thing for a long time, he just never brings her out.” He said walking away but how long did Harry mean, one week, two months, before me and Niall hooked up? And why was this the first time I had ever seen her.
“Harry, wait.” I said grabbing him by the arm. “How long, is a long time?” I said trying to get him to look me in the eye. “On and off for a year is what he told me.” He said and everything he said after that I didn’t care to listen because I was furious, because maybe I had developed feelings for Niall but I was only one thing to him.
I was Niall’s rebound girl.

Perfect on The Surface (Chapter Four)
Chapter Four In which Skye discovers who she really needs.
Niall didn’t seem to notice me right away but when his face changed to a confused expression I was positive he seen me. I hoped he didn’t think that Liam and I were a thing though it shouldn’t have even mattered anyway. Niall and I were just mates it was just some stupid drunk night that probably meant nothing to Niall. Harry walked in after and I wondered if anyone in this house knocked?
“Just came to get you, we’re going to The Fox but I guess you’re already busy.” Niall said as he walked out leaving Liam, Harry and me awkwardly looking at each other in the room.
“I actually feel like going out tonight.” Liam said surprising me. “You’re coming Skye, saying goodbye to your friendship with crazy Cassie, this is a special event worth drinking to.” He said as he was grabbing clothes from his closet. “I would love to.” I said surprising myself, but after losing one of the only girl friends I had at University, I needed something to drink. Though none of Cassie’s words were true they still stung.
I sprung out of bed and Harry covered his eyes. “Very funny, I’m not naked this time I swear.” I said deadpan crossing my hands over my chest. Liam looked at both of us then shook his head. “Nope I’m not even going to ask.” Liam said as he left to get changed. Harry waited for him to leave before he continued the conversation. “First I see you with Niall, now with Liam. Are you making a habit out of sleeping with my roommates?” He asked and I put on one of my best seductive faces. “Why did you want to be next?” I asked winking at him.
“Please, don’t make me sick before I go out.” He said brushing me off and I was glad he understood the joke. I started grabbing clothes from one of the bags and Harry looked even more baffled probably noticing all the bags that I had.
“If you must know, I’m your new roommate.” I said which only made his expression become darker as he tried to understand what was going on.
“So you and Liam are that serious?” He asked as the frown lines showed on his face, he obviously disapproved. “Will you calm down and let me explain.” I said as he sat down on Liam’s computer chair with his hands behind his head, he stretched out getting comfortable. “I can’t wait to hear this.” He said rolling his eyes but I ignored him.
“You remember Cassie? Yeah well she went crazy and assumed Liam and I were together because we held hands for basically a second. Then she called me a boyfriend stealing bitch and kicked me out of my house.” I took a breath after my ramble realizing how fast I was actually talking.
“So you get back at her by moving in with her ex and sleeping in his bed?” He asked and I couldn’t help but think of how terrible it sounded out loud. “I’m not getting back at her, Liam asked me to move in.” I said on the defense, I was in no way a spiteful person, but the way Harry said it, it was like I was seeking revenge when I wasn’t. Harry looked at me with a raised eyebrow “How scandalous.”
“Oh go away I need to get ready.” I said as I shooed Harry out of my new room. It was weird calling this place home, it was only temporary but still.
I put on the skinny jeans I had put on the bed and threw on a tank top that said you complete mess the two S’s were small making it look like it said you complete me.
I pulled my hair up into a ponytail and reran some eyeliner on the inner water line of my eye. I ran downstairs with my small purse thrown over my shoulder and the boys were all waiting for me staring. “I didn’t take that long.” I said rolling my eyes as I pushed past Liam to get to the door.
“Ages, you took ages.” Harry whispered in my ear as he followed behind me. I ignored him as we all walked to the pub together. Niall came up beside me and we slowed down so the others were in front of us.
“Liam told me about Cas. I’m sorry if it makes you feel better I never liked her.” He said giving me a smile and a light nod with his shoulder. I was glad that Niall and I were on speaking terms again, with my friend count slowly diminishing. “Yeah well I should’ve expected it. We weren’t ever truly mates anyway.” Niall pulled me into his shoulder and gave me a quick hug.
When we made it to the pub I was surprised on how many people they could actually pack in here. It wasn’t the only pub on campus so it wasn’t like there was nowhere else to go. Maybe it was the atmosphere that drew people in. It was so causal with its dark green walls and its many beer and football posters, darts and pool tables. People sat around wooden tables and clinked their beers as they cheered by the football game on the telly.
I made my way to the bar with Liam. He ordered me two tequila shots to start. “I’m not drinking that.” I said crossing my arms across my chest. “Yes, yes you are.” He said smiling as he lifted one of the shots to me, I took it unwillingly. “You need to forget about Cass, so drink to your hearts content, I will match you and we will see how this night turns out.” He said laughing and I shook my head and smiled passing him the second shot glass so we could be even.
Since I knew Liam from last year I knew he was a total light weight but I hoped for his sake that he would be able to keep up tonight, with the pace we were at now he wouldn’t last an hour.
A few more drinks in and we were on the dance floor. I jumped up and down to the beat as my hair flipped all over the place. Liam was shuffling and almost feel forward. I grabbed a hold on his arm steadying him though I was not the picture of perfect balance.
Liam pulled he in for a hug, there were sharp pains shooting into my side because I was laughing so hard. Zayn and Harry finally came and broke up our laughing fit to tell us they were headed to the tattoo parlour.
Liam’s eyes widened as he stared at me with a mischievous grin. “We’re getting tattoos.” He said pointing at me and I nodded drunkenly at the idea of getting a tattoo, something to remind me of how happy I was at this point. No pageants, no mom, no sister, no Chad, just my friends.
Niall went home with Louis so it was just the four of us walking down Smith Street to the tattoo shop called Morphine. I wondered if it was called that because they gave such bad tattoos that you needed morphine to just get through them, but that might have been the alcohol talking.
Zayn fell into step with me. “Why are you planning to get a tattoo when you’re piss drunk, and it’s like one in the morning?” I asked almost tripping as my sandal slipped off. I laughed as Zayn tried to put it back on my wavering foot. He took out a smoke and thought about my question for what felt like a long time.
“It hurts like hell. Rather do it when I’m drunk. I love art so however it turns out I’m ok, at least there is a story behind it. It isn’t like it is my first one.” He said smiling at he as he light a cigarette, flicking his lighter as the flame lite. Smoke came out of his nose when he noticed I was staring. I laughed and he lightly pushed me. “You will be fine. I will even design something for you, drunk. It will be perfect.” He said. I didn’t care much though a tattoo was everything I wanted, it would mean that I could get away from pageants and I could finally get away from my mom’s pressure to be perfect. I wondered how my dad would react if he seen it, then quickly wiped that thought from my mind.
When we walked into Morphine my skin crawled. It wasn’t because of the cleanliness but because of all the designs. The rooms were dark and the walls were covered in designs. They weren’t on posters but instead painted onto the wall with small numbers on the bottom of them. They were painted in gold and white that made the black painted wall almost non-existent. Candles lite and even an old record player playing music that seemed best suited for Halloween.
I took a seat on the bench that was pushed against the opposite wall of the gold and black designs, the bench was shaped like two skeletons lying next to each other and as I looked around I regretted coming here. I pushed my fear away as I watched the boys talking to the tattoo artist. He was covered in tattoos, even on his face. He wore lots of piercings as well which made him look like he was straight out of a motorcycle gang, I bet he didn’t need to be drunk like Zayn to get through the pain.
Zayn wore a huge smile on his face while Liam nodded his head as he pointed to a massive design that would probably take months to complete. When Harry sat down beside me I was startled, I had almost forgotten he was here. He took off his beanie and ran a hand through his thick curls. I felt the urge to reach out my hand and touch them but I held myself back. “Don’t get a tattoo.” He said giving me a small smile as he laid his head on his right shoulder and looked at me. “Why, you can have one and I can’t?” I said in a sing song voice pointing at him accusingly.
“I got mine when I was sober. You on the other hand are actually quite drunk.” He said shaking his head. I was ready to argue when I was interrupted by the tattoo artist. “Love if you are going to get one you need to pick now.” He said and I nodded as I watched Liam and Zayn go into the back room to get theirs done.
I wrote out a quote I used every day when I competed in pageants but had some minor changes done to it. It looked quite nice in my drunk handwriting but I figured the tattoo artist or Zayn could make something out of it.
Once Zayn got out with his new tattoo of a small bird on his hand and Liam came out with an Egyptian quote that I was sure he wouldn’t remember the meaning to when he woke up I walked towards the back room. The sound of the vibrating machine making me feel dizzy as my mind whirled at the thought of what I was doing. I was going to have this on me for the rest of my life. Was I going to like it 10 years from now or 50 when my grandchildren asked how I got it? “Oh I was piss drunk.” It would be a great story to tell impressionable youth.
When I sat back in the chair and the tattoo artist went over my medical forms with me, I felt sick to my stomach. I nodded as he asked the questions. The tattoo artist placed the blue stencil on my forearm and I nearly fainted when I sat back in the chair everything was happening to fast.
This was all too real, as soon as he stuck that needle to my arm I would be nothing to my mother. I would be ruined. If I hadn’t looked down when I did, I would have been nothing more than a stranger. I pushed the gun out of his hand and broke down in tears.
I ran out of the room as the tattoo artist yelled his worst profanities at me. I guess I deserved it. I probably broke his gun or made a mess. Harry got up out of his seat and tried to follow me. I shook my head and tried to push him away but he was too strong and I was too drunk.
“Let me go!” I said in his arms as he took a deep breath trying to figure out what to do with me. When he opened his eyes they were gentler then I expected. “Not until you tell me what’s wrong.” He said waiting for me to answer through my crying whimpers.
“You, I just, no I need to talk to Chad.” I said as he gave me a shocked look and let me go. Liam interrupted at the sound of Chad’s name. “No you can’t go see him Skye, what about Niall.” He said pointing at me as Zayn tried to steady him with his arm around his waist. My face fell. I hadn’t expected Niall’s name to be brought up. “We’re just mates Liam.” I said trying to walk away, but he stopped me grabbing my wrist. “You’ll tell yourself anything to avoid the truth.” He said and I couldn’t help but feel a bit of guilt. I liked Niall but as a mate and Liam was here as my mate shoving it right in my face.
“Just leave me alone.” I cried as I walked out of the shop. They just didn’t understand. If I would’ve gotten that tattoo I wouldn’t have been able to compete in a pageant again, I would be surrendering the only real connection I had with my mother and as much as I hated the way she treated me and critiqued me, it was better than having no mother at all.
And Chad knew that, after all the conversations I had with him about my mother he would understand, he would know exactly what to say, and I needed him more than I would ever care to admit.
I dialed the familiar number as I walked alone drunk on the street, I couldn’t walk anymore so I sat on the curb of the street flipping off my sandals and putting them beside me. He picked up on the first ring.
“What’s wrong.” He said frantically into the phone though you could tell I woke him up.
I didn’t care if these three words ruined everything that I had worked towards to end the relationship between us, I didn’t just want him I needed him. So I cried into the phone, “I need you.” I took a deep breath and waited for a response that was anything like what I expected.
** Ahhh I know I am leaving you on another cliff hanger, I’m sorry but I had to. So anyway, in this chapter we really get to see how hurt Skye is and how much she values her relationship with her mother no matter how much of a monster she is (which you will see in the next couple of chapters). So what did you think? Did you like it or hate it? Have you even read from the beginning? Well leave your comments in my ask and if you haven’t read from the beginning you can check it out on wattpad. Or even scroll through my posts to find them if you are up for the challenge. Perfect on The Surface
Chapter One
“I swear to god, if you don’t come out tonight we’re done being friends.” Cassie yelled from the hallway as I sat on the couch eating my breakfast, cheerios was the breakfast of champions.
“Stop being so dramatic!” I said back with a mouthful of cheerios. She put her hands on her hips and looked at me as if to say “don’t mess with me.”
I put my bowl down and put my hands up in mock defeat as I finished chewing, “Ok why do I need to go?” I said back challenging her.
“Because Liam is going to be there and I need you to introduce him to me.” She said with a smile on her face, like it was the best plan she could’ve come up with.
I shook my head “Why don’t you just introduce yourself to him? Why do I need to be there?” I asked with a frown. I really didn’t want to go out tonight with having my first paper due this semester on Monday, I wanted to focus. If focusing meant pretending to do my paper and then actually watching Netflix then so be it, but maybe I could get some of it done.
“That’s because you’re friends with him and he trusts your opinion. Common you’re in the same class, so if he thinks hey Skye thinks this girl is cool then he will think I should to.” She said joining me on the couch. She had been obsessing over Liam ever since she seen him last year, but she never had to courage to talk to him. She lacked confidence though she didn’t need to, I think she was oblivious to how gorgeous she actually was. With her long blonde hair, cute button nose, and her long legs she was everyone’s perfect girl, it was just too bad she never seen it.
“Fine but you so owe me.” I said smiling back at her as she threw her arms around me squealing. “Anything you want!” She said as I pried her death grip off of my shoulders. “Anyway got to go to class, can’t be late again or Mr.Dex will literally kill me.” She said throwing her laptop bag over her shoulder.
“He could never kill you, you’re his favourite student.” I winked at her as she flipped me the middle finger. Cass once had a huge crush on Mr.Dex her Anatomy instructor. Until she found out that he was actually gay, it was embarrassing only because she tried to hit on him. I think she described it as “I said we could play doctor and he just laughed at me.” It was something she would never live down because I would never forget to tease her about it.
I on the other hand didn’t have class until 2:30pm today so had to get started on my psychology paper on what personality type I was an A or a B, since my plans had changed for tonight. I cursed how Cass could always convince me to do things I didn’t want to. She should be studying to be a lawyer never mind a nurse.
I got ready throwing on a pair of blue skinny jeans and tight black t-shirt. I put my hair in a quick pony tail and headed to the coffee shop on campus. Waver University was known for having one of the best coffee shops in town so I knew I had to get there early or I could forget about ever getting a seat.
When walking there I texting and walked right into Niall Horan. Niall was a music major which suited him perfectly. He loved attention and never seemed to be without his guitar.
“Well hello there Skye.” He said grabbing my textbook that fell to the floor as he took out his headphones. “Sorry I was texting.” I said back. We had been friends ever since last year when Liam introduced us along with his other flatmates Zayn and Louis. I think we got along so well because we were both never too serious.
“If you wanted a hug all you had to do was ask.” He said handing me the textbook. I gave me a dirty look “In your dreams Horan.” I said taking the book out of his hands roughly.
He winked and said “Can’t wait.” I rolled my eyes.
“So, you’re coming tonight right?” He asked smiling.
“Why does everyone want me to go to this stupid party?” I said throwing my hand up in defeat as I almost dropped my textbook again. Why were textbooks always so damn heavy?
“Believe it or not, we kind of are friends.” He said squinting his eyes.
I opened my mouth shocked, “Since when did this happen?” I said putting my hand on my chest acting surprised.
“You know sometimes it’s hard to even have a conversation with you. Can you just tell me if you’re coming, I need to know how much beer to buy.” He said like he was somewhat frustrated. I brushed it off “Would I miss a party?” I asked he looked at me sideways but came to the conclusion that I was right. He didn’t have to know that I was actually planning on not going earlier today.
“No, you wouldn’t. So I’ll see you there. Oh invite your boyfriend too I guess.” He said as he gave me a small wave and put his headphones back in. I gave him a small smile in return.
Niall also didn’t need to know that I hadn’t seen or talked to Chad much since last term. It was mostly my fault, I hadn’t made the effort to go visit him or even call him much. It was Chad’s constant texting that keep our relationship alive. It wasn’t that I didn’t love him anymore it was just that I didn’t see myself with me anymore. I felt that I had changed but the familiarity of our relationship kept me with him, though I wish there was another reason to stay.
I continued walking to the coffee shop and just as I suspected it was packed. I seen a seat and made a beeline for it almost knocking over the waitress she gave me a dirty look but I just gave her a sorry smile. When I turned back around I seen my seat had been filled by a tall boy with dark curly hair and skinny jeans. I cursed him under my breath and went to find another seat.
I got myself a vanilla latte and waited for an opening, when some girl left her seat to go get another cup of coffee I pounced, I got comfortable at her table when she finally made it back all she could do was admit defeat and go find another spot. The opportunity had presented itself and I needed to get this paper done. It was war in the coffee shop and I had won this round.
My phone rang as I sipped my latte. “Hello.” I said with a cheery voice not bothering to look at my call display. “Where are you, love?” Chad said in a tone matching mine. My stomach tightened, I felt guilty right away for not having called him sooner knowing he had arrived yesterday though my classes started a week ago.
“At Grinds, the coffee shop by the library.” I said hoping he would say he wouldn’t join me. It was a horrible thought but I had to finish this paper and the words weren’t going to write themselves. “I will be there in 5.” He said as I cringed, so much for getting any work done.
He was true to his word and showed up within 5 minutes of getting off the phone with him. He looked around until his eyes met mine and he made his way to my small table in the back of the coffee shop. He looked so happy to see me that I couldn’t help but feel happy to. He could do that. Make you feel happy when you were feeling the total opposite.
He grabbed a chair for the nearing table, winning the coffee shop war in seconds. He didn’t sit down but instead pulled me up from my chair and gave me a large embrace. I hugged him back, it brought back feelings that I hadn’t expected and I thought maybe the distance was making me lose interest. But now that he was in front of me I was his again. I gave him a quick kiss and then we both sat down. He reached his hand across the table and held mine.
“How was your summer?” He said smiling.
I smiled back “Busy, lots of pageants.” I said back hating that I actually still had to compete. But I reminded myself that it was because of my mother. If I didn’t she would disown me and I didn’t want to ruin the already unstable relationship we had.
“Did you win any?” He asked while focusing on his cellphone. “I won all of them actually, though it wasn’t like I enjoyed it.” I said and he just nodded eyes still glued to his cellphone. I leaned towards him trying to get him to look at me but he wouldn’t. I waved my hands in front of his face and he finally looked up. He put his cellphone away looking embarrassed “I’m sorry babe, my mum wanted to know how you were.” I smiled though more guilt rose as I knew my mother didn’t even know he existed.
“Aww, tell her I said hi.” I said tucking my hair behind my ears. He put his phone away and brought his attention back to me. “Anyway, what are you doing tonight?” He said expectantly. “We were invited to a party at Niall’s flat.” I said looking at his hand on mine as I spoke. “Cassie roped me into it.” I said shyly. “I see, well I’m down as long as your there nothing else matters.” He said caressing my hand with his thumb.
We planned to meet at my flat and then walk over to Niall’s together. Niall’s was a couple buildings over which made it an easy walk, even in heels. When I finally finished my paper and headed home it had started to get dark out. I underestimated the time it took to write so I rushed home quickly running to my flat as I clung to my textbook.
I rushed in, the door slamming it behind me, startling Cassie and her two friends who were already pre drinking. I apologized and headed to my room. Cassie came in with a drink already mixed and I thanked her as I rushed to get ready. She already looked drunk by the way her eyes were glossed over.
“I thought you weren’t going to show.” She said slurring her words a bit.
“What do you think nothing of my word?” I said back laughing.
She smiled and took another sip of her drink. “Thanks for doing this by the way.”  She said as she left to join her other classmates in the living room.
I went through my closet and found the perfect outfit. I put on a pair of black leather shorts and paired it with a simple red tank top. I put on a pair of sexy knee length boots and found my studded black clutch located in the back of my closet. When I had finally put my make up on and curled my long brown hair the doorbell rang. I ran into the other room only to find that Cass was already talking to Chad. I gave him a wave and headed back to my room downing my first drink.
I was way behind everyone on the drunken scale and I needed to catch up. I grabbed a bottle of tequila from my dresser and took two shots as the liquid burned my throat. I shook my head because of the harsh taste and then went out to join everyone else.
Cassie was in the middle of asking him if he wanted a drink when I came out. Chad didn’t drink often and it looked like tonight was going to be another one of those nights. On the other hand tonight I was going to drink to my heart’s content because finishing that paper was something to celebrate.
Cassie went back to her friends and I told her we would meet them there because they weren’t even close to being ready to leave, I knew that because I shouldn’t have been leaving ether because I wasn’t drunk enough, but I felt bad for Chad and chose to be a good girlfriend, for once.
Chad held my hand as we walked around the campus. I leaned in closer to him because I was cold so he put his hand around me snuggling me into his jacket. When we made it to Niall’s flat he was already drunk.
“Skyeee, finally.” He said looking at his wrist though there was no watch there. I laughed as Chad stood there with a small smile.
“Miss me?” I said as we walked in to his flat. It was such a party flat, they had a pool table, darts, a huge kitchen that connected to the living room, even a flat screen telly that I hoped wouldn’t get ruined tonight for their sakes, they would be lost with it.
“You have no idea.” He said giving me a wink. I just pushed him playfully out of the way as I went straight to where the alcohol was. Of course it was outside in the backyard, I shivered just thinking about it. When I went to the backyard Chad followed me.
“What was that about?” He questioned and I was a little bit taken back. Chad had never been the jealous type before. But if he was going to start now, Niall wasn’t one to worry about.
“What?” I asked innocently as I took a sip of my drink.
“Never mind, I think I’m going to leave. I forgot I had an early morning tomorrow.” He said kissing me on the forehead and walking away. I grabbed his wrist to slow him down.
“You’re not mad at me are you?” I asked with a frown he rubbed his lips with his hand and then looked away.
“We will talk tomorrow, are you ok walking home from here?” He asked changing the subject and I nodded, as he left barely waiting for me to answer.
I sat down next to Niall on the couch as I finished my beer. “Where is your boyfriend?” Niall asked and I just gave him a sharp look, one that said not now.
“Whatever it is, I can make you feel better.” Niall said as he put his arm around me playfully. I shrugged it off me as I seen Cassie and her friends come in the door. I went over to them flipping Niall the middle finger as I left. He gave me a hurt look before continuing his conversation with his friend.
The liquor was finally starting to kick in as I reached the door. I hadn’t realized how much I drank but it didn’t matter I was having fun. “Come with me.” I said to Cass as I linked my arm in hers. I causally bumped into Liam who was having a conversation with Zayn.
“I’m so sorry!” I said as he turned to see who had run into him. Liam’s face brightened when he saw it was me.
“It’s alright Skye.” He said as Zayn gave me a wave, I smiled back.
“Hey Liam have you ever met my friend Cassie?” I said causally as he looked her up and down.
“I think I’ve seen you around.” He said sticking his hand out to shake hers. “I’m Liam nice to meet you Cassie.” He said as they started having a conversation. I left as soon as I seen my work was done and headed back to the backyard for another beer.
When I came back in the house someone ran right into me, knocking my beer on my shirt as the cold liquid traveled down my midriff creating a chill. I let out a small shriek trying to wipe the beer off my shirt. When I looked up it was the same boy I saw at Grinds. The one who stole my seat with the soft curls and skinny jeans, I yelled out “First my chair and now my shirt, unbelievable.” I said glaring at him.
“Sorry! What wait your chair?” He asked as his eyebrow rose.
“Yeah today at Grinds you stole my seat and now you have ruined my outfit” I said pushing past him.
“Woah, woah I didn’t know Grinds had assigned seats.” He said challenging me as he smiled exposing dimples, I shook my head erasing any thoughts of seeing him as attractive. Just when I was about to rip him a new one Niall intervened.
“Oh I see you two have met. Skye, this is Harry my new flatmate.” He said noticing my wet tank top he shrugged and turned his attention to Harry.
“Nice to meet you.” I said deadpan as I walked away and upstairs to Niall’s room.
Niall’s room was such a guy’s room, football posters, guitars, laundry on the floor and dishes lying around his computer desk. I sat on his bed knowing he wouldn’t be far behind me.
“You have to play nice.” Niall said as he found a plain back t-shirt for me to wear. He handed it to me and I stripped out of my tank top and put the new shirt on ignoring Niall’s shocked expression, I was too drunk to care.
“Damn Skye.” He said laughing as I gave him a dirty look.
“Seriously Harry didn’t mean to pour beer on you but remind me to thank him later.” He said laughing as he made his way downstairs. Tosser.
I sent Chad a quick text as I headed downstairs to get myself a refill but I was interrupted by a call. I answered realizing that it was Chad calling. “Hey babe, I was just about to text you.” I said smiling.
“Analeigh I have to tell you something.” He said using my first name. I realized that it was something serious.
“What’s wrong?” I said closing my eyes and sitting back down on Niall’s bed.
“I cheated on you during the break. I had to get that off my chest. You don’t know how much I regret it, babe please say something.” He said as I swallowed hard into the phone. It’s not like this was surprising, I hadn’t given him what he needed over the break. I felt kind of relieved that I had something to justice why we broke up.
I took a deep breath “Ok, well I can’t do this anymore.” I said hanging up before he could say anything. It felt like a weight had been lifted, as much as I tried to convince myself that I still had feelings for him they had faded. I went downstairs and right to the keg.
Harry was outside getting himself a drink. I filled up a new cup and walked around him. He followed me ending the conversation with a guy he was talking to. He caught up to me. “I really am sorry.” He said as I walked into the house. “Whatever.” I said as I went into the kitchen not in the mood to fight. Niall was playing beer pong and I admired the fact that he was actually good. I was terrible and always ended up missing the table. Niall got the ball into the last cup and whooped in victory.
As the night went on and everyone started filing out Cassie asked if I wanted to leave because Liam was walking her home and I declined. I didn’t want to get in the way of their budding romance that I had started. I tipped back my glass finishing the contents and put it down on the table. Niall stood by me as I sat on the counter. He had just said goodbye to the last party goers. His flatmates had gone to bed so it was just us downstairs in the mess the party left over. Cups everywhere, beer bottles, garbage, evidence of a good party.
“Did you have a good time?” He said smiling. I looked away. I didn’t want to talk about the fact that I just dumped my boyfriend of almost a year.
“It was ok.” I said teasing him. “Ok, just ok?” He asked putting his arms on the counter on either side of me.
“Yeah I’ve been to better.” I egged him on though I was aware of how close he was standing near me.
“Oh yeah?” He said as he reached up and started tickling me. I laughed as I begged him to stop. “Say it was a good party.” He said as I finally caved in, my abs were starting to burn from all the laughing.
“I know what could make it a better party.” He said drunkenly in a singsong voice. I laughed and whispered “What we are already trashed as it is what could be better?” He put his hand on my thigh and smiled.
“Well we could.” He trailed off and then shook his head. “But you have a boyfriend.” He laughed but it was my turn to shake my head. “Not anymore.” I said as he frowned. “Don’t ask.” I said as he brought me into a long passionate kiss he was firm and in control which I doubted I was considered my state of drunkenness.
He picked me up from the counter and carried me up the stairs stumbling only briefly near the top where he had to put his hand on the wall for support. When we got to his room I jumped down and tried to take off my clothes as Niall frantically tried to take off his. My mind was screaming at me saying what are you doing but my body was cheering me on. We came back even hungrier for each other as he threw me down on the bed. Kissing my neck hard as his touched reached knickers playing near the waistband. I knew where he was headed from there. But the rest was a blur I looked around in the dark as I laid in bed naked with one of my best mates, wondering if I was going to remember this in the morning.
