Most likely due to the fact that we have never lived another lifestyle we have a very different outlook on feeding farm animals. None of them, including laying hens, were ever meant to live exclusively on factory made food. In fact, only more recently in history did those even become available. Because we have never relied on them as the sole source of nutrition for any animal we have not noticed a change at all in our egg collection. The majority of our birds diet comes from carcasses, scraps, scratch, and free ranging and the minority is from a feed bag. We have had a few people ask if we are concerned that they’re not getting all their nutrition needs met, the answer to that is no not even a little. When your flock is not healthy- it shows. Ours is and has always been. The reason we have this approach is because this is historically how it has been done in our family (and probably also the world). Never has there been a time like today when people are carefully measuring bag feed and mixing in so many different things to be sure their flock is matching up to the food pyramid created by the usda for chickens. Are we saying your hens don’t need to be well fed? No. We are just telling you that moving away from the bag being your crutch and towards what chickens ate before the advent of bag feed is an avenue worth exploring. We are just finishing a rotation up on our neighbors pastures who very generously let our goats roam through.
