Jimmy Buffett died on the Saturday of Labor day not ONLY so we could be drunk about it all weekend and have an extra day to recover, but because there's no better way for our Uncle of summer to go out than the weekend the last dregs of summer are pouring out of the year. Sail on you son of a son of a sailor 🦜🦜🦜🦜

In grade school, Jimmy Buffet played the trombone in the school band. As a child he was exposed to sailing through his grandfather and these experiences would go on to influence his later music. He started playing the guitar in college and began his musical career in Nashville, Tennessee, during the late 1960s as a country artist. Jimmy later moved to Key West and began establishing the easy-going beach-bum persona he became known for.
James William Buffett died on September 1, 2023 at the age of 76.

I woke up at 5:30 this morning and checked my phone to see that Jimmy Buffett passed away during the night. The news was surprisingly gutting, given that he was 76 and I haven't seen him in concert in probably 20 years (though not for lack of trying.) But I still listen to him all the time.
His was literally the music of my childhood. The first time I got in trouble at school was when my preschool teacher called my parents and told them I was singing about how I wanted "a smart woman in a real short skirt," and that was not appropriate for Lutheran preschool. Every vacation, Jimmy Buffett was playing on the tape deck or the CD player, a new album if there was one, old hits if there were not. When I got married, my father and I danced to Little Miss Magic, a song Jimmy wrote for his daughter around my age. Now I play his music for my own kid, who is old enough to be starting his own music collection (on vinyl!) and will sometimes pick up a Buffett album for me. I wish I'd had the chance to take him to a concert like my folks took me. They were a hell of a fun time.
His fame was a strange thing, he only had a handful of actual hits and they were somehow never his best songs, just the ones everybody knows. But he wrote so much good music that lives in the hearts and minds of his fans, and I am going to miss him just being in the world.
If you have a minute today, here's one of my favorite songs of his, and fitting for the day. It's worth a listen.

The fantasy of being a Parrothead is that you can exit society for a life by the beach, listening to Jimmy Buffett, getting plenty of sun, rum and exercise. Society may look down on you, but who cares? You have nothing to do but frolic all day.
The fantasy of being a ponygirl is that you can exit society for a life at the ranch, listening to your dominant, getting plenty of sun, oats and exercise. Society may look down on you, but who cares? You have nothing to do but frolic all day.
I'm just saying, the only difference between the two is the how hard the tanlines are to explain Monday morning.

Jimmy Buffett shaped the soundtrack of my life. When I was a precocious 9 year old raiding my dad’s tape collection, I discovered A1A from 1974. It was tuned to Tin Cup Chalice, my first Buffett song. A song about seeking comfort in the places you know best, going back to the island to die beside the sea. It’s always been my favorite. I didn’t even know Margaritaville until I was older and started buying my own music, which quickly included all of his albums. I was a grunge kid in my flannel, combat boots, and never ending love for Buffett. When I moved to Peru, I carefully selected which Buffett albums would make the trip and he continued to narrate my life through new adventures, heartbreak, and triumph. Jimmy sang when my kids were born. Jimmy’s music wakes me up every day. Jimmy came with us on every road trip, every flight, every time I needed a little more sunshine in my life. Jimmy gave me that light when I all could see was darkness.

I was so sad, deep down in my bones, when I heard we lost him last night. My condolences to his family and everyone who loved him. My heart has felt very fragile for a while so I’ll just let Bubba sing us out:
Some of it's magic, some of it's tragic
But I had a good life all the way.

Thank you Jimmy,
for over 50 years you, your music and your attitude...were there for me, helped me in the lowest of lows, helped me celebrate the highest of highs.
Wherever in the world, your music made friends of strangers and will continue to do so.
Sail on in Peace!
