scent of the day: delina (parfums de marly)

delina opens as a fruity rose - a bit of a shower gel-esque vibe according to my boyfriend, i think because the juiciness of the lychee note. the rose is prominent and slightly sour, but the fragrance is not very intense upfront. as it warms up it reveals more of the warm cashmeran and vanilla muskiness underpinning the light first impressions. the cashmeran, as usual for me, conjures images of vintage cosmetics, but manages to avoid being dusty or cloying. i can detect the soft spice of nutmeg and the dryness of vetiver and wood notes starting to shine through.

this reads very pink, very femme and coy, but still pretty subtle and effortless - not at all loud, heavy, or perfume-y, which, depending on your taste, might be a plus or it might be a disappointment. given the opulent price tag for a full bottle, i kind of expected more body from it, but it's very elegant. it gets described as "princess perfume" often, and i think that's fitting; anneliese from barbie's princess and the pauper would wear it. it has a nice springtime vibe - maybe too sweet for high summer and too light for the colder months.

if you want something in the same ballpark for less, i recommend alkemia scent oils - this is reminiscent of les courtisanes (lychee, nutmeg & woody), carmen 7 (lychee, floral & musk), and silken tent (similar cashmeran note), though none of these feature a big rose note upfront as delina does. and delina is ultimately a rose scent first and foremost, which i enjoy, but beware if roses aren't your thing. i won't be buying the full bottle as i don't think it's worth the nearly 5€/ml asking price, but i'm glad i got a generous sample.

scent of the day: delina exclusif (parfums de marly)

denser and more gourmand than the original, delina exclusif doesn't have that same expansive rose & tart lychee in its first impression. the rose is there, but it's somewhat fenced in by the woody-creamy character of the scent. the fruity notes eventuallly also start to shine through as the fragrance warms on my skin; i expected them to dominate the first wafts, but they are almost a little reticent, though beautifully blended. someone on fragrantica compared it to roses and old books; i can see that in the vanillic base. it fades to a gorgeous skin scent.

delina exclusif is the older, more mature sister of delina (with delina la rosée being the youngest of the trio). it is a sweet scent, perhaps sweeter even than the other two variants, but not cloying, even though this very hot weather we've been having is likely not doing it any favours. i'll be bringing this out again in winter, when i want a cosy rose fragrance. for the current weather, though, i prefer her sisters.
