I've been wanting to typeset this for quite a long time, finally did it. The original is gray-scale,but I really wanted to add some colour,so I did the background from scratch. I'm attaching it here, along with a bonus: Cross dressed Gil from the Odds and Ends artbook.

i wish these had numbers to not take up room but alas: what is your absolute favorite ship? what’s a ship you like that most people don’t? what is the most underrated ship, in your opinion? (choose any of your fave pairings for the following bc I'm curious about all your faves) rate [pairing] from 1-10 and explain why. what’s your favorite headcanon of [pairing]? what’s your favorite canon moment of [pairing]? favorite AU ideas for [pairing]? what song(s) remind you of [pairing]?
Thank you my dear! You are my Star Wars Friend so I’ll keep it SW focused (if you wanted to ask this to solely find out what else I liked BESIDES SW sorry lol just let me know and I can redo it). This got long because turns out I have a lot to say about my ships so answers under the cut!!! xD
Absolute favorite ship: This one’s kinda hard but I’m gonna have to go with Obi Wan/Anakin! I also like them a lot as a trio with Padmé, but overall I gotta say these two are just my faves? Why? Because they are such a M E S S and gosh I just love them so much. Ppl say they don’t like each other very much but come on, have you watched the TCW, have you watched RotS, they’re the greatest team there ever was, they’re constantly fretting and worrying about each other, they’re always teasing (the constant banter omg boys pls) at each other and hyping the other up and believing in each other and Ahsoka literally calls them her adoptive guardians in the Ahsoka novel, that’s how much of a family they were and ugh they’re just so married. And they’re such a TRAGEDY and it breaks my heart and it’s delicious to watch because in the final fight it’s just heartbreaking betrayal because through it all they love each other so much and that’s WHY they’re so furious with each other because to them it feels like the ultimate betrayal. Even after (when after everything, Obi Wan still loved Anakin too much to kill him himself) they’re constantly on the other’s mind, and ugh the pain hurts but in such a good way, and how in the end Anakin did the right thing and Obi Wan was RIGHT THERE to help guide him back to the light in spirit and now they can rest happily together for eternity (with some spare stressing about, ya know, Kylo Ren and the impending return of Sidious, but never mind all that). and on top of that, it’s my fave because I also absolutely love their relationship platonically as well, as much as I LIKE to see them together, it’s not necessary for me because they have such an enjoyable dynamic. *coughs* Sorry, so yea, they’re my disaster faves! 😅
A ship I like that most people don’t: See above lol. I get aspects of the Obikin ship can be problematic in the whole power dynamic and age difference thing, but I’ve only ever shipped it after Anakin was knighted as an adult when there’s literally not a problem with it (it was weird for me because I watched the prequels totally out of order. I actually saw the TCW cartoon FIRST and then I saw RotS and then I didn’t watch the first two for a while after that because I was a fool and listened to prequel bashers who said the first two weren’t good, so when I started shipping them as adults that was all I saw them as). To be honest, for the most part the PT fandom is done with the drama since ya know, like a good half of the SW general fandom still hates us, so no one’s really vocal about not liking it and our shipping community is mostly left to ourselves, but every once in a while I’ll come across a joke post/fanart of the two and OP will be all snarky in the notes like “tag as a ship and I’ll come after you with my spiked bat” (someone’s exact words btw) and it’s like ok jeez, do not interact then, was minding my own business dude...
My most underrated ship: Hmmmm....... Gonna have to go between Luke/Ezra and Satine/Padmé. Skybridger I understand since they’ve literally never met in canon, but come ON, they’d get along like a house on fire and argh they should have met, it would be great. I honestly don’t get why Pads and Satine aren’t more of a thing (THEY DON’T EVEN HAVE AN OFFICIAL SHIPNAME ;_; ) cuz c’mon they’re the subtler explosive yin to Obi and Ani’s wildfire yang. They get along great and work together really well, and they both seem to have a type. I am doing them a little better in my new OT4 fic, and I hope ppl like it!!! Ya know what, I’m also gonna add Kaeden (cute girl from the Ahsoka novel!) and Ahsoka because even if a lot of ppl actually ship them, they hardly have any content and neED MORE DANGIT THEY WERE SO CUTE!!!!!!!
Gonna go with Obikin for all the following ones cuz I haven’t had the chance to gush about my boys in a while and you’ve opened Pandora’s box
Rate them from 1-10: 10, plus a hundred more points because I love them, then subtract that hundred again cuz Anakin is an gotdang idiot who ruined it and now they both make me cry. My scoring reasons are that they make me feel all the emotions and I love them Ever So Much and argh.
Fave headcanon: Oh boy, I’ve got a couple actually!
Whenever they’re talking/arguing over the phone, they’re always subconsciously mirroring each other’s actions even when they can’t see what the other is doing. It’s kinda creepy because you’ll hear yelling and it’ll look like one of them’s talking to an invisible person in front of them when it’s actually each other.
There has been multiple instances of them both getting injured in battle because they were distracted watching the other be a total badass (not that either will admit it)
Neither of them are morning people. AT ALL. Obi Wan actually has self-discipline and is able to get up with an alarm and crankily drag them both up, but both are almost impossible to deal with until they’ve had caffeine in them, and it’s been established that unless you want to risk murder, neither of them talks in the morning until caffeine has been provided.
There has been many, many cases of accidentally taking the other’s robe and not realizing it but thinking to themselves that said robe feels more comforting than usual today.
A mutually drunken arm wrestling match absolutely turned into a mutually drunken makeout once. Neither can remember it, and they wonder why some of the clones have been acting funny all week.
Half of the Temple thinks they’re already dating.
Ok I’ll stop it here
Fave Canon Moment: Ughhh, this is HARD. I really like the “any closer and you’d be kissing it” line in TCW, basically any moment in TCW when one of them refers to Ahsoka as “OUR padawan”, the extra long stares and unnecessary touches they give each other in TCW, the elevator scene in RotS movie (THE NOVEL MAKES IT A MILLION TIMES BETTER), also in RotS the way Anakin is half-ready to straight up fight Palpatine when he suggests leaving Obi Wan behind to die, the RotS “No loose wire jokes” bit, the RotS “Roger. Roger.” bit (OKAY JUST THE WHOLE FIRST HALF OF THIS RIDICULOUS MOVIE), the way Vader built his big stupid castle where they had their breakup, the way he’s constantly mentioning Obi Wan when the convo wasn’t even about him, seeing them together again at the end of RotJ (whoops you asked for one, you get MANY SCENES)
Fave AU ideas: Again, there’s a couple!
Superpower AU: Can’t decide whether I’d put this in canon or modern. Most powers in this AU are stolen from inspired by X-Men, DC, and other popular media, so I’m torn between Anakin having Jean Grey/Dark Phoenix style powers while Obi Wan had a variation on Rogue’s with additional energy manipulation. OR it would be a thing where Anakin could commune with the dead a la Klaus from Umbrella Academy while Obes had sort of Avatar-style wind/flight powers. (Both are relevant for different plots).
Sith AU: I know these are far from unpopular in the SW fandom, but the way I’d do it would be to try and write two stories at once, update one every other week so one update a week total. The stories would what would happen if either of them became the Sith Apprentice after the events of Episode 1, and how their dynamic would be during Ep 2 and The Clone Wars with one of them on the other side. It’s funny because the way I’ve plotted it, the Sith!Ani fic would have very big Good Omens vibes, while the Sith!Obi one would have very strong Under the Red Hood vibes, so two VERY different dynamics going on xD
WWII Spies: This is one I 100% plan to write someday, even tho it is a very long time from now. It’s basically following Anakin as an American naval pilot who got injured in a crash and discharged. He still wants to serve and eventually his talent gets him into the intelligence end of the war and sent to Europe where he meets Ben, who’s been working with British intelligence since it broke out, and sparks fly. I’m kind of cheating here cuz as of now this is an Obianidala story, not just Obikin, but it’s one I’m very excited for
Phantom of the Opera AU: This idea I had when I realized that Anakin as Vader is kinda a Lot like the Phantom, but he’s also a Lot like Christine too. So it turned into Anakin as a talented ballet dancer getting preyed on by Palpatine!Phantom (there is NO romance there, Palpy is a total creep and will be treated as such) with Obi Wan as a combination of Raoul and Madame Gery and I have a bunch of ideas and idk if it’s gonna be an actual thing, but I want it to.
Shapeshifter AU: Canon, not very complicated but they can all shift into animals. Obi Wan is a kind of cougar panther cat with a fluffy ginger tail, and Anakin is a big grumpy black Krayt Dragon with a stump for a front leg.
Not A Jedi!AU: One in canon in which set like the Sith!AU, two different stories exploring how their dynamic would be if one of them wasn’t found by the Order. As of now, I’ve got Anakin as the warrior pirate prince of Tatooine, after having grown up and staged a slave rebellion, then promptly put his mother on the throne, and Obi Wan’s there to negotiate something during TCW and things happen. For the Obi Wan one, he’s a political journalist and war correspondent who keeps on running into Anakin’s assignments and popping up where he’s stationed and Anakin has to keep this idiot from getting himself killed/stop asking me annoying questions that criticize the Jedi and the government.
Dark!AU: A kind of morbid canon divergent fic where Padmé dies early and unexpectedly (Palps didn’t plan it). Anakin goes off the rails and Obi Wan agrees to go with him on a murder vengeance roadtrip to try and keep him from Falling or the Sith from getting to him. He kinda fails and they both Fall in a way and it ends with them hunting down Sidious’ players one by one. I’m not entirely sure I want to continue with this tho because it plays strongly on the Fridged Woman trope, which I can’t stand. I’d have to figure out how to give Padmé some sort of active role after her death...
Songs to describe them: There’s a couple (I could have very well gone cranky but I decided to do (mostly) serious))(also my music taste kinda stinks)
Icarus— Bastille
Anna Sun— WALK THE MOON
Animal I Have Become— Acoustic cover by Vitamin String Quartet (original by Three Days Grace) (seriously y’all listen it’s sooooo gooooood)
Warriors— Imagine Dragons
My Demons— STARSET
Ignorance— Paramore
Set Fire to the Rain— Adele
Stubborn Love— The Lumineers
How to Save A Life— The Fray (yes i am aware it is stereotypical angst song leave me Alone it FITS)
Viva la Vida— Coldplay (tbh this fits like the entire PT but I liked it)
Raised by Wolves— U2 (another more PT-centric, but this one works dangit)
Bonus Broadway Song! : Confrontation from Les Miserables (now that ya think of it, that would be a pretty good AU too.....)
Bonus Broadway Song! : The Tango Maureen from Rent (I always imagined this one as Obi Wan and Padmé about Anakin, but it would be about something other than cheating cuz canon has established Anakin views cheating as a worse crime than murder, so yea)
Bonus Broadway Song! : Anything You Can Do I Can Do Better (aight this one’s mostly a joke but come ON don’t tell me that’s not completely them xD)

Why my thighs are going to thank me...
Tomorrow is my first official day on my own as a wilderness explorer in the park. The past three days have been my “on the job” training with other experienced explorers. For the past two weeks we’ve been having classroom training and brief parks tours detailing the wide array of conservation knowledge we’ll need to know, how to navigate the ins and outs of the largest theme park in the world, and preparing us for what we might encounter when talking to guests or handling other park situations. It’s overwhelming to consider the amount of people I’m going speak to every day at this job, and even more overwhelming to consider how important my job is to their vacation, to make a difference in what they think about when they go home.
These days felt pretty long because a lot of it was sitting and taking notes over endless power point presentations. Quite a nice flashback to college. Then came the first shadow day and suddenly I was in my costume and out in the park. I expected to be observing our trainers most of the day and learning from them, but what ended up happening was our trainer would model a conversation or two for us at each station before we were thrown in to play our part. My heart was beating uncontrollably in my chest when the first family walked up to me. A little girl about 6 years old looked up at me with excitement because here she was at Animal Kingdom about to become a Wilderness Explorer. Her eyes widened as she looked at my costume and heard other kids around her becoming explorers. Her mom had already taken out her camera. I saw myself eagerly looking up, ready to explore. The entire day felt like a blur. We keep track of how many people we talk to and by the end of the day I had easily talked to over 200 individuals. I don’t think I’d ever talked so much in my life and my throat definitely felt it.
The second day was the same thing, trying to cover more locations with our trainer and getting more and more practice talking to guests. There are two things I realized I need to do a little more homework on: plants and dinosaurs. The good news is I can now tell you about 4 cool dinosaurs which is 2 more than I already knew. The botany badge is only difficult because it’s in Pandora, the land of Avatar which means not only do I need to know about the plants back on Earth at this badge, but I need to relate to the ones surrounding us on Pandora. If you need someone to watch the next Avatar movie with who knows their stuff, I’m your girl.
Then came day three and that’s when we were put into pairs without anyone there to guide us. Luckily my partner had previously worked at Kilimanjaro Safaris so she knew her way around the park. I feel pretty comfortable navigating the park for guests but once I go backstage I am completely lost. It’s a whole new world back there (no pun intended) and finding the break room nearest to whatever station you finish up at is no easy task. However, we made it through the day somehow.
I guess at this point your wondering what this has to do with my thighs. SQUATTING 24/7 IS WHAT THIS HAS TO DO WITH MY THIGHS. Every time a kid comes over you drop everything and get on their level. In the moment it’s great and definitely  makes the kid listen to what you’re saying more closely BUT at the end of the day when I finally sit down in my car. Oh boy, My legs sure do feels it. My voice feels it too. Throat coat tea is definitely becoming my best friend.
I’ll be sure to update soon with how my first few days on my own go. Also thinking of just posting some thoughts about the parks themselves and what rides/restaurants/shows I’d recommend or been too.
The wilderness must be explored!

One Magical Weekend: The Circuit Experience
If GayDayS, with its emphasis on hitting the parks and hanging by the pool, is the beating heart of Gay Disney week in Orlando, One Magical Weekend (OMW) is the quintessential circuit-party experience transplanted into Walt Disney World itself. The location has its perks, including shuttles to all events and bus service to all the Walt Disney World Resorts theme parks.
Like GayDayS, OMW has its own host hotel and daily pool parties, of course, as well as a Gay Biz Expo. But the event’s calling cards are its round-the-clock schedule and its showpiece mega-parties. OMW owns the late, late time slot with its nightly Cadabra after-hours parties, and #Riptide, an EDM-scored hijacking of Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon Waterpark, takes the pool party experience to its logical — and spectacular — extreme.

The Best of the Rest: Orlando’s Finest
We’ve dedicated a lot of ink to two major gay events that helicopter into Mousetown (fabulously!) for one week a year, but Orlando is an LGBT hotspot with a vibrant scene all year ’round. When the rainbow hordes descend on the city each June, local bars and clubs are fully committed to the celebration. They step right up with their own nightly extravaganzas. Here are just a few of this year’s top offerings, where you can get a taste of the authentic (monorail-free!) Orlando.

Saturday, June 2
8pm–3am. $20 advance/$30 door/$50 VIP. How did you get here? Nobody’s supposed to be here! Nobody except the inimitable Deborah Cox, that is. Deb will be performing her greatest hits. Will she wear her hair in a ponytail? I’s guess… absolutely not! Meanwhile, it’s Brianna back on the decks, as is Kidd Madonny, who must have taken a room for the weekend.
Sunday, June 3
8pm–3am. Free before 6pm/$20 after/$50 VIP.
It’s a foam party tonight, so maybe don’t wear your best shoes. Only problem is, there’s also a Drag Race Season 10 trifecta tonight: Aquaria, The Vixen, and Miz Cracker will all be in da hizzouse. And you know at least one of them is gonna read you for that sad, second-string footwear. Brianna and Madonny supply the tunes.

The cocktail-fortified pool parties at the host hotel run from 10am to the wee hours every day, GayDayS practically sets the itinerary for the entire gay gaggle’s migration from theme park to theme park, and diversity is built right into a program that features twice-a-day bear pool parties, pageants (drag and leather), bingo, diva impersonators, and a massive LGBT expo.

Fitbit Versa review
Buy some great High Tech products from WithCharity.org #All Profits go to Charity
For most companies, the Ionic would have felt like a disappointment. For Fitbit, it was something more. It wasn’t just a fully realized piece of hardware running undercooked software, it was the basket into which the company seemed to have placed all of its eggs.
The company’s first official smartwatch was the product of a startup shopping spree that included Pebble, Coin and Vector, and CEO James Park exuded confidence that it would be precisely what the company needed to get back on track after a few years of financial fumbling. It was a lot to put on a single product, and perhaps the whole thing just buckled under the weight.
When the company revealed the Versa last week, I called the device “the smartwatch the Ionic should have been.” After several days and nights of wearing on my wrist, I stand by that comment. It’s still far from perfect, and the company clearly has some important mountains to climb before the company has any real shot of challenging the Apple Watch’s throne, but the Versa feels like a welcome do-over, and is exactly the kind of watch the company ought to have released in the first place.
Squircle motion
It never ceases to amaze how little thought some companies appear to put into the wearability of their wearables. I mean, it’s right there in the name folks, product designed to be worn on the human body all day — and, in many cases, all night. That the Ionic was big and ugly was baffling for any number of reasons, not the least of which is the fact that the company bought Pebble.
Sure, Fitbit’s been making its own hardware for years now, and I can totally empathize with the desire to put one’s own stamp on the product, in an attempt to differentiate it right out of the gate. But Pebble was one of the most important innovators in the smartwatch space, and the company delivered consistently interesting product design, generation after generation.
Shortly before the Ionic was announced, Park told me that the company had essentially acquired Pebble so Fitbit could build its own smartwatch app store. The company, it seemed, had no interest in the hardware side of things — that much seemed clear with one look at the Ionic. I recognize that the Versa has been in the works for some time now, but the watch really does feel like a response to all of those who wondered aloud why the company didn’t take design cues from the company it required.
From a pure hardware design perspective, the Versa really does feel like the smartwatch Pebble would have made in 2018. When the company showed us the product for the first time at an event in New York, they went into the design philosophy around why the product ended up in the shape it did. I’ll spare you the specifics, but the long and short of it is that round watches are a relic of analog time keeping. The display is square more or the less for the same reason your laptop and tablet have a square (okay, fine, rectangular) display.
The company calls the shape of case design a “squircle” — which, I was actually surprised to find, is apparently a legitimate geometric term. The case is thin and light, as advertised — notably when placed up against the Apple Watch. It’s made of metal, but it’s light enough to fool you into believing it isn’t, which means it doesn’t have quite as much of a premium feel as Apple’s device.
The front also sports some pretty massive bezels, seemingly another holdover from the Pebble days. The case is shorter, but significantly wider than the larger Apple Watch model. That means it will fit on a lot more wrists than its predecessors — a smart move on Fitbit’s part, given how the company blocked out a wide potential user base the last time around. Even so, the company may want to consider moving toward two sizes for the next generation product. Choice would go a long way as the company works to appeal to a broader range of users.
Software
The interface is basically unchanged since the Ionic. No surprise there — the Versa arrives about half a year after the Ionic. Fitbit’s watch OS is pretty bare-bones, from a design perspective, but that’s fine. The icons are big and bright, laid out on a grid, four per screen. It’s all very utilitarian — though it does require a lot of swiping or button pressing, given that there’s no spinning crown or watch bezel for navigation like you find on Apple and Samsung offerings, respectively.
While the Versa is quite as fitness-centric as the Ionic, it’s still a centerpiece. No surprise there, of course — even Apple has readily admitted that fitness is the primary driver in purchasing the company’s wearable, and Fitbit certainly has the right foundation to deliver on that front. The default watch face offers your step count for the day, along with easy access to your heart rate and calories burned.
A swipe up from there shows your daily numbers in a row, along with some fitness tips, while a swipe to the left shows the first row of app icons, with Exercise out front. Clicking that little running guy will pop up a series of pre-programmed exercises for more accurate activity tracking.
The first page also features Coach, which offers up a handful of quick (five to 15 minute) workouts for strengthening your abs and such. The workouts feature a simple animation of a person performing the exercise, but given the small, low-res screen, you’re really better off using the company’s guided coaching on your phone.
App score
The biggest update on the software side, however, is the addition of some friggin’ apps. For all the talk of buying Pebble for app store and development purposes, that was a mile-wide blindspot for the Ionic. After all, the inclusion of third-party apps is the thing that officially made the product a smartwatch. A few months after the Ionic’s release, Fitbit announced 60 additional apps for the device and a boatload of watch faces.
Of course, there’s still a lot of catching up to do with the competition, but it’s a start. Some, like Uber/Lyft and The New York Times, are genuinely useful. For music, the company has Pandora and Deezer — both of which have their user base, but they ultimately make the lack of a Spotify offering that much more glaring. At the very least, Fitbit’s proven it’s committed to growing the selection, going forward.
The not special edition
And, of course, there’s the Starbucks app — though anything that uses direct payment is a bit of a moot point, since there’s no NFC on the standard Versa model here in the States. That was clearly a cost-cutting measure, but if paying with your wrist is important to you, you can shell out the additional $30 for the “special edition.”
The other key feature missing from the Versa is GPS. You can still do tracking when hooked up to the GPS on your handset, but dropping it from Versa hardware means the watch is less appealing as a standalone tracker. Ditto for NFC.
There is so storage for music (only 2.5GB of the on-board 4GB, mind), but on a whole, this isn’t the device for people who want to go on a run without their phone. That, Fitbit, will happily tell you, is a job for the Ionic — assuming, of course you want to pay $100 more for the privilege.
Nice versa
In our interview ahead of the Versa announcement, Park was very candid about the fact that the Ionic didn’t sell as well as the company had hoped. Perhaps the Versa simple wasn’t ready in time, but this device really ought to have been the one Fitbit lead with. It’s imperfect, but it addresses a number of the key issues many, myself included, had with the Ionic. It fits and looks better, has a more robust app selection and, at $199, it’s pretty nicely priced.
Like the Ionic, this isn’t the device that’s going to turn around Fitbit’s fortunes once and for all — a fact the company seems keenly aware of as it pivots a big chunk of its business to the professional health sector. But it does feel like precisely the kind of smartwatch Fitbit should have made all along.

Catalonia Endgame Keeps Spain On Tenterhooks
At this time, the cultural battle now rocking America concerning marriage and the right of homosexual males and females to have recognition of identical-sex marriages is taken into account by many to be a virtual assault on civilization as we know it. In the present day, thirty-seven states and the federal government have legal guidelines that refuse to acknowledge homosexual marriages. Quickly, Oz and his companions will discover themselves confronted by the Baskervilles and ghosts from the past, as he makes his way back residence in a journey tormented by relentless despair. You may also choose a photograph pendant of coronary heart form or a coronary heart form along with her Preliminary in it. A plain gold necklace with a single heart can be something that appears stylish and chic. Which explains, maybe, why it took me just a few days to retrapper earlier than writing about the experience. One factor I had an issue with, although, is that it tended to change into repetitive. Ask him what his reasoning is. Opinion: China's growth is harming the planet
Many observers of China’s escalating global program of foreign investment and infrastructure development are crossing their fingers and hoping for the best. In an ideal world, China’s unbridled ambitions will improve economic growth, food security and social development in many poor nations, as well as enrich itself.
Such hopes are certainly timely, given the isolationism of the US Trump administration, which has created an international leadership vacuum that China is eager to fill.
But a close look reveals that China’s international agenda is far more exploitative than many realise, especially for the global environment. And the Chinese leadership’s claims to be embracing “green development” are in many cases more propaganda than fact.
To help steer through the maze, I provide here a snapshot of China’s present environmental impacts. Are China’s assertions reasoned and defensible, or something else altogether?
Predatory force?
For a start, China is overwhelmingly the world’s biggest consumer of illegally poached wildlife and wildlife products. From rhino horn to pangolins, to shark fins, to a menagerie of wild bird species, Chinese consumption drives much of the global trade in wildlife exploitation and smuggling.
Over the past 15 years, China’s rapacious appetite for ivory has largely driven a global collapse of elephant populations. In response to growing international criticism, China promised to shut down its domestic ivory trade by the end of 2017.

But even before China’s ban has taken full force, a black market for ivory is developing in neighbouring Laos. There, Chinese entrepreneurs are churning out great quantities of carved ivory products, specifically designed for Chinese tastes and openly sold to Chinese visitors.
China is also the world’s biggest importer of illegal timber, a trade that imperils forests while defrauding developing nations of billions of dollars each year in timber royalties.
China claims to be working to reduce its illegal timber imports, but its efforts are half-hearted at best, judging by the amount of illegal timber still flowing across its border with Myanmar.

Infrastructure tsunami
More damaging still are China’s plans for infrastructure expansion that will irreparably degrade much of the natural world.
China’s One Belt One Road initiative alone will carve massive arrays of new roads, railroads, ports, and extractive industries such as mining, logging, and oil and gas projects into at least 70 nations across Asia, Europe, and Africa.
Chinese President Xi Jinping promises that the Belt and Road initiative will be “green, low-carbon, circular and sustainable”, but such a claim is profoundly divorced from reality.
As my colleagues and I recently argued in Science and Current Biology, the modern infrastructure tsunami that is largely being driven by China will open a Pandora’s box of environmental crises, including large-scale deforestation, habitat fragmentation, wildlife poaching, water pollution and greenhouse gas emissions.
China’s pursuit of natural resources is also escalating across Latin America. In the Amazon, for example, big mining projects – many of which are feeding Chinese industries – don’t just cause serious local degradation, but also promote widespread deforestation from the networks of roads bulldosed into remote areas to access the mines.

Overall, China is the most aggressive consumer of minerals on the planet and the biggest driver of tropical deforestation.
Beyond this, China is pushing to build a 5,000km railroad across South America, to make it cheaper for China to import timber, minerals, soy and other natural resources from ports along South America’s Pacific coast. If it proceeds, the number of critical ecosystems that would be impacted by this project is staggering.
A World Bank study of more than 3,000 overseas projects funded or operated by China revealed how it often treats poor nations as “pollution havens” – transferring its own environmental degradation to developing nations that are desperate for foreign investment.
Finally, much has been made of the fact that China is beginning to temper its appetite for domestic fossil-fuelled energy. It is now a leading investor in solar and wind energy, and recently delayed construction of more than 150 coal-fired electricity plants in China.
These are unquestionably pluses, but they need to be seen in their broad context. In terms of greenhouse-gas emissions, China has exploded past every other nation. It now produces more than twice the carbon emissions of the United States, the second-biggest polluter, following the greatest building spree of coal, nuclear, and large-scale hydro projects in human history.
Despite its new post-Trump role as the world’s de facto climate leader, China’s overall agenda could scarcely be described as green.
Iceberg ahead
Some would say it’s unfair to criticise China like this. They would argue that China is merely following a well-trodden path of exploitative development previously forged by other nations and colonial powers.
But China is not the same as any other nation. The astounding growth and size of its economy, its dangerously single-minded vision for exploiting natural resources and land internationally, its intolerance of internal and external criticism, and its increasingly closed media and official myopia all combine to make it unique.
President Xi admits that many Chinese corporations, investors and lenders operating overseas have often acted aggressively and even illegally. But he says his government is powerless to do much about it. The most notable government response to date is a series of “green papers” containing guidelines that sound good in theory but are almost universally ignored by Chinese interests overseas.
Indigenous forest people in the Congo Basin become increasingly poor and marginalised as foreign miners, loggers and poachers invade their lands. (Others)

Are Xi’s assertions of powerlessness believable? He increasingly rules China with an iron hand. Is it really impossible for China to guide and control its overseas industries, or are they simply so profitable that the government doesn’t want to?
Of course, China’s huge international ambitions will have some positive effects, and could even be economically transformative for certain nations. But many other elements will benefit China while profoundly damaging our planet.
