McDonald's Restaurants by Magnitude of Mountain Backdrop / Rut

Eating a Big Mac® while gazing at Big Mountains is an experience that millions of Americans can relate to. But little do we ask ourselves, which McDonald's restaurants have the biggest, baddest mountain backdrop?
So I set out to answer this question, using rut, a topographic metric that does particularly well at identifying cities with badass mountain backdrops. (For more info, check out this Mercury News article by John Metcalfe, or my research paper)
Roughly speaking, this is how rut works:
The higher the mountains rise above a restaurant, the more impressive they appear, and the greater the rut.
The more steeply the mountains rise above a restaurant, the more impressive they appear, and the greater the rut.
Here's a tier list that shows the rut of the ruttiest McDonald's restaurant in various cities. The cutoffs are rather arbitrary, so please don't poison me with a Grimace Shake if your city doesn't get the tier you like :)

Note: a rut of X doesn't mean the surrounding mountains rise a height of X above the restaurant. Instead, a rut of X means that a restaurant's mountain backdrop is as impressive as a restaurant at the base of a vertical cliff of height X. The less steeply the surrounding mountains rise above the restaurant, the lower the rut.
Also note: rut only considers rise above surroundings (relative height differences and angle of elevation). it does not consider absolute elevation, nor the "aesthetics" of a mountain, nor visibility (or lack thereof) due to weather or smog.

ROAD HOUSE de Doug Liman: La Ballade de Dalton

Ce remake plus ou moins fidèle du film culte de 1989 recycle certains éléments du scénario original dans un contexte assez différent. Mais les grandes lignes sont là : Dalton, un type ayant la réputation de savoir se servir de ses poings, est recruté pour venir faire le ménage dans un bar routier envahi par la racaille; il développe une relation avec une infirmière du coin; un malveillant homme riche contrôle presque tout dans les environs. Le Road House de 2024 diffère notamment de son inspiration par le fait que Elwood Dalton (plutôt que James Dalton) est un ancien combattant de UFC déchu, qui mène une existence de vagabond vivant dans sa voiture lorsqu’on le rencontre, et que le bar routier qui l’engage se trouve dans les Keys de Floride plutôt qu’au Missouri.
Là où le bât blesse, c’est que notre protagoniste est incarné par un Jake Gyllenhaal correct, mais loin d’être aussi iconique et badass que Patrick Swayze. De même, le méchant joué par Billy Magnussen n’arrive pas à la cheville du parfaitement détestable Ben Gazzara. Et les créateurs de cette nouvelle version n’ont même pas tenté de remplacer le vieux pote interprété par Sam Elliott! Mentionnons également qu’au lieu du Jeff Healey Band, on doit se contenter d’une succession de groupes anonymes jouant au bar alors que les bouteilles de bière volent de toute part.

Bref, il s’agit indéniablement d’une pâle copie du long-métrage de Rowdy Herrington, qui n’est toutefois pas sans qualités. Malgré trop de longueurs, le remake inclut quand même plusieurs scènes d’action assez percutantes. Et à la mi-parcours, l’introduction du coloré psychopathe Knox, un rôle défendu avec enthousiasme par le véritable champion d’arts martiaux mixtes Conor McGregor, dynamise considérablement le récit. Il y a aussi une trame narrative intéressante impliquant une jeune fille (Hannah Love Lanier) travaillant dans une librairie qui compare la situation dans laquelle se retrouve Dalton à un roman western, ce qui n’est pas sans rappeler une certaine scène de Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood.
En janvier, le réalisateur Doug Liman a annoncé qu’il boycotterait la première de Road House (2024) à SXSW à cause de la décision d’Amazon MGM de lancer son film directement sur la plateforme Prime Video. Ironiquement, alors qu’il aurait été difficile de recommander d’aller le voir en salle, c’est le genre de vue qui mérite quand même qu’on lui jette un coup d’œil dans le confort de chez soi, sans trop d’attentes.

Force is playing a mostly freeform game of soccer with friends after school. Some idiot kicks the ball way out of bounds and Force chases after it, ducking around the big tiered seats that they never let them sit on during assemblies. The ball is beneath them and Force goes for it, grabbing it with both hands. Which is when he sees Book, who’s sitting curled up with his knees tucked up to his chin. I guess the first thing I learned from this is that in my 10 most recent fics there are no pairing repeats which feels very true to me lol.
And then I think scene setting? First line establishes the POV and the scenario and the timeline. the 3wbf fic is post-canon so I set up Shin POV and that they're all already together but separated. I do want to work on developing more grippy or hooky first lines I think in general my prose is not that pretty. A real banger first line. "In a hole in the ground there lived a Hobbit" of a first line. A "There was a boy called Eustace Clarence Scrubb, and he almost deserved it." of a first line. A "why is the measure of love loss" type of a deal.

C'est intéressant de voir que William et Jack, plutôt tolérants, en général, de la bêtise d'Averell et si prompts à le protéger de la vengeance de Joe, sont les plus affectés par la nette préférence de Ma pour le "petit dernier".

Elles ont presque toutes fait succomber l’agent 007 car ce sont des femmes au physique avenant et sont souvent des espionnes ou des victimes rencontrées par James Bond au cours de ses missions. Elles tissent généralement un lien rapide avec l’espion et entretiennent une relation amoureuse presque à chaque fois avec lui. Bien que pour l’instant il n’y a eu que six acteurs ayant le rôle de James Bond, les actrices interprétant les James Bond Girls sont quant à elles plus nombreuses.

There was a time when folks on the left were brilliant and learned, and debate required folks on the right to work hard to match wits with them. That was the 60's-early 80's. Now the left resembles the day room in a 19th Century institution for the feeble-minded. So let's deconstruct the latest meanderings from another skull tragically filled with mush. Pay attention liberal kids. School is now in session at Casa Nadal, and your teacher has taken some time to put together this liberating list of facts.

1. In 1803 John Dalton called the smallest particles of matter, "atoms." Though he did this slightly after the U.S. Constitution was written, the writers of that document were classically schooled in Greek and Latin. They knew well what Dalton knew:
It was the Greeks 2,000 years earlier who reasoned that one could only divide matter for a finite number of divisions until one reached that which could no longer be divided. They called these fundamental units of matter, "atomos." ATOMS!
2. Medicine based on the Four Humors (Blood, Phlegm, Black Bile, Yellow Bile). The ancient Greeks believed health resulted from these four fluids being in balance. The view dominated Western medicine until 1628, when the great anatomist and physician, William Harvey, began to change the thinking. He was preceded in the 1500's by the Swiss physician and alchemist, Paracelsus (Theophrastus von Hohenheim), who developed the idea that various combinations of herbs and minerals had therapeutic effects.
In 1729, Irish immigrant, Christopher Marshall, opened one of the first apothecaries (pharmacies) in the colonies, setting up in Philadelphia, PA.
In 1752 The Philadelphia Hospital opened the first hospital pharmacy.
In 1799 Scottish physician, John Ferriar, discovered the heart medicine, digitalis. He applied its use in cases of dropsy (severe congestive heart failure). While blood letting was still a thing in western medicine, it was one of the last vestiges of humoral medicine as the preceding 250 years had begun to revolutionize medical practice with detailed study of anatomy and the emerging field of pharmaceutical science.
3. A well-trained soldier could fire five rounds per minute (not four) from a musket, which had to be muzzle-loaded. It is interesting that the same people who decry semi-automatic weapons in the 21st Century and appeal to the muzzle-loading muskets of the Founders as having been sufficient for them, should then ridicule that same 18th Century technology as symbolic of primitiveness, but I digress...
4. In 1677 Robert Plot is credited with discovering the first dinosauer bone, but thought it belonged to a giant human. It wouldn't be until 1824 that the Oxford geologist, William Buckland, would discover bones from the same creature as Robert Plot, and name it, Megalosaurus (Great Lizard). So, nobody knew at the time of our founding that dinosaurs existed.
What exactly the knowledge of dinosaurs has to do with systems of government seems to be an issue only in liberal minds.
5. Women were NEVER considered property by the Founders, and indeed the status of women was markedly different between unmarried and married women under Common Law. 6. Only a dimwit would have written this about lightbulbs. Benjamin Franklin was not only a Founding Father of the United States, he was also one of the Founding Fathers in the field of Electrical Science, and was world renowned in his lifetime for it.
He designed an electric battery and coined that very term.
He also coined the terms, "positive charge" and "negative charge."
He did experiments with Leyden Jars, used to store electricity, and discovered that electricity was stored in the material in the jars, and not in the water surrounding those materials. He also discovered that the amount of energy stored depended on the materials the jars were made of.
He discovered that electricity was not generated by rubbing two objects together, but was transferred from one object to the other. He thus contributed the Principle of Conservation of Electrical Charge, and used the terms "charging" and "discharging" to describe the transfer of electrical charge between two bodies.
Based on his kite experiment, Franklin invented the lightning rod.
Had the Founding Fathers been shown a lightbulb they would have grasped almost immediately the principle by which it works, as parlor demonstrations of electricity were around since the early 1700's, and only grew in complexity and wonder because of Franklin's discoveries.
Far from being unenlightened rustics, the Founding Fathers distilled 250 years of Enlightenment Philosophy into these few lines that set off revolutions around the world:
"We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.--That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, --That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness."
Then, knowing the imperfections of the system they set in place, they built in the machinery for future generations to amend the Constitution.
They lived in the age of modern Medicine's beginnings, Chemistry's beginnings, Physics' beginnings, Pharmaceutical Science's beginnings, Paleontology's beginnings, among others. They revolutionized the world as much as the world's intellectual revolutions shaped them.
The nation they founded would rise up to lead the world in the industrial revolution, and most of the scientific and technological revolution of the latter 20th Century.
If the preamble to the Declaration of Independence is the distillation of 250 years of Enlightenment philosophy into just a few lines, this meme is the distillation of ignorance of the life, times, and contributions of the Founding Fathers, and the 246 subsequent years of the American experience into even fewer words.

Eugene P. Gabor
Eugene P. Gabor, of Forty Fort, passed away Friday, April 12th, at Wilkes-Barre General Hospital, surrounded by his family.
Born in Nanticoke on October 25, 1949, he was the son of the late Stephen and Loretta Gabor.
Gene graduated from St. Mary’s – St. Nick's High School and Luzerne County Community College. He served with the 402nd Military Police division, Wilkes-Barre. Later, he began working with his father in the automobile industry, doing business as Gabe’s Motors, on Lower Broadway, Nanticoke, until the Agnes Flood of 1972. They rebuilt the dealership on the Sans Souci Highway and remained in business until selling the Dodge Franchise in 2006. He continued his love of cars by opening a used car lot in Larksville for a few years before retiring.
Gene was not a man to sit at home. He loved talking to customers and remained active working first at Fine Wine & Good Spirits, South Main Street, Wilkes-Barre, and then part time at Market 32, Edwardsville.
Surviving are his wife of 53 years, Joyce, daughters, Michelle (John) Olinyk, Dalton; Kimberly (Rob) Piorkowski, Kingston; Kristen (Joe) Alonzo, Easton; two grandsons and his best buddies, Anthony and Jayson Alonzo, who adored him as their Papa.
Family and friends are asked to call on Thursday, April 18th from 10 to 10:30 AM at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish, 116 Hughes St., Swoyersville, PA 18704.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 AM on Thursday, April 18th at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in his name to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, PO Box 50, Memphis, TN 38101-9929.
