TSON Comic adaptation 2#
It's going much better than expected! I am very happy with the designs of the characters and with the studies I've been making... I thought I'd post some of the stuff I made so you can see it but I will keep some other things to myself👹
1 & 2 - Understanding how the children are drawn was relatively easy, but trying to keep the proportions consistent is a nightmare. A lot of them have MASSIVE hair and a tiny face, so I tried to reflect that with Noone.
3 - Otto will be such a pain in the ass to keep consistent... There's no other adult to take as reference for the face, but I think I have the body down!
4 - Concepts for the cover(s?) of episode one. I already made the draft of the first 14 pages (approximately 6 minutes in), so if I keep this pace up I should have the first part ready soon enough. I will make a Q&A explaining how I intend to divide the parts.
5 - My designs of baby Otto and Sisi! I went out of my way to make him look like Chicken Little. And a ginger. It's an inside joke.

Chapter 4 - Two of a Kind
(As always, made with the help of @queen0fm0nsterz!!!)
Chapter 1
Chapter 2
Chapter 3
--------------
[CLICK]
[Something is booted up]
OTTO: Duality. A notion essential to psychology. We all contain a multitude of personas and change proverbial masks to match our present situations. [Shifting] The body is the container for this legion within, allowing us to maintain the important illusion of a singular self, the very basis of human experience. In Noone, there lies both the innocent child and the disturbed traveler. Both fight for control. But what happens when the duality is not only in the mind?
[Click]
Recording of NOONE: “T…Two breaths. Why could I hear him breathing? Why could I feel them breathing? My body was sh–”
[Tape is cut off with a click]
OTTO: Given her vanishings, I fear it is not only her inner self which has become subject to division, but her body as well. One child, torn between two worlds… Either I have lost my marbles, or we tread ever deeper into territories beyond the boundaries of rational thought.
[Click, tape rewinds]
[Intro plays]
[Click can be heard twice. Young voices scream joyfully in the background, muffled through a wall]
NOONE: Otto? What is this place?
OTTO: The reunion room.
NOONE: Is that cake they’re eating? May I have some? Can I go in there?
OTTO: I’m sorry, you may only watch. My colleagues don’t allow inpatients to mingle with outpatients. …Those who are ready to go home to their families, I mean. Sit tight, and I’ll get you some cake.
[Otto walks away]
OTTO, distant, fading: Get me a piece of cake. Piece of cake? Get me a piece of cake… [Door closes]
[Otto walks back in]
OTTO: There! A fine chocolatey slice.
NOONE: They’re not waving back…
OTTO: Ah, it’s a two-way mirror. We can observe them but they can’t observe us. …(inhales) I’d – like to ask about last night.
NOONE, eating: Mh? Last night?
OTTO: You were in bed with the brain activity monitor on. One moment you were there, and the next – gone! Where… did you go?
NOONE: I don’t understand…
OTTO: (inhales) I watched you myself so I know you didn’t get up and leave the room.
NOONE: Wasn’t I asleep? I don’t recall any of this.
OTTO: ...You vanished, Noone.
NOONE: Huh?
OTTO: I – I thought I might have been mistaken at first, but the E.E.G. readings persisted, as if you were still there. Several minutes lapsed, then you reappeared.
NOONE, distressed: That makes no sense!
OTTO: This wasn’t an isolated event.
NOONE, even more distressed: What do you mean, I can’t just — [raising her voice] people just don’t disappear! [breathing heavily] You’re supposed to help me! You’re supposed to understand…
[Noone breathes hard in the background, on the verge of a panic attack]
OTTO: And yet neither of us do! It’s a major event, a bonafide anomaly. That’s why you must be sure that –
NOONE, interrupting: Is there some kind of trick?!
OTTO: It’s alright. [Noone is still breathing hard] Look at me. Focus on my eyes. Breathe. Noone, slowly.
[Noone’s breaths slow down slightly]
OTTO, under his breath: Breathe, two, three… Hold, two, three… Out, two, three…
[Noone follows his instructions, breathes slower]
OTTO: That’s it. That’s a girl.
[Noone stops breathing hard]
OTTO: Better?
NOONE: … Why did you take me here, Otto?
OTTO: I know solitude can be hard, and visualization is essential to developing beliefs that will –
NOONE: It’s being alone I hate. It’s being lonely.
OTTO: And I’m showing that, one day, you’ll be in the reunion room too! Just as relieved as those children, sharing cake rather than eating it by yourself. But you have to trust my process, even when it’s difficult for you to grasp.
NOONE: (Sigh) I understand more than you think.
OTTO: … Yes. I suspect so too. Hidden somewhere in your head. Come along! We’ve got preparations to make before tonight’s session.
NOONE: …Can we stay here? A minute longer?
OTTO: (Sigh) Alright. Just until you finish that slice.
[The recording stops momentarily and picks up mid sentence]
NOONE: – o many wires! T-They’re everywhere!
[Strapping, Otto preparing the machine]
OTTO: It’s the same E.E.G. machine I use to monitor your sleeping brain, only now I’d like to acquire readings during wakefulness, during your retelling to compare results.
NOONE: My last doctor made me do things like this all the time. [Otto prepping] Tubes into my stomach… I– I don’t much like being awake for tests and proddings.
OTTO: [hums] These electrodes may feel strange on your scalp, but there’s no pain. Nothing to worry about. If anxiety rears its head, take deep breaths. Same as earlier, yes?
NOONE: I– I’m not sure –
OTTO, interrupting: (slightly strained) Trust, remember?
[Shifting. The machine boots up, activates and Noone winces]
OTTO: Not so bad, is it?
NOONE: Can we get this over with?
OTTO: Of course! Begin as you like.
NOONE, narrating: I spun out of a dark place, and brilliant lights sparkled around. Then, far off laughter, and screams. But… screams of joy. Gathering my head, I… I saw other kids sitting on wooden crates nearby. As I approached, they were surprised to see me, but introduced themselves one by one.
[Quiet music begins, machine can still be heard]
NOONE, narrating: They were performers, they said. Each with different skills and talents. Juggling, fire breathing, trapy-something…
OTTO, correcting her: Trapeze?
NOONE: Trapeze! That’s what he said. (narrating) The boy called Rusty, he – he walked tightrope too. There were caravans all around: wooden ones, big yellow wheels, and all these colorful fabrics. I noticed the lights again. Fairy lights, shining down into the puddles from the rain that cleared before I’d arrived. Their reflection, swirling in the murky water, like a ballet. It was… beautiful.
NOONE: (sighs) As I lost focus, the others went on talking, fast and loud as teenagers do.
OTTO, interrupting again: Teenagers? And how long have they been there, performing in this place?
NOONE: Please, Otto! Let me get through it.
[Shifting. The carnival grows louder and distorted speech can be heard]
NOONE, narrating: From the way they looked, they’d been there a long time. But they were confident, or tried to be, and kind. As the clouds parted, Rusty asked if I wanted to go on a ride.
RUSTY, in the background, ov. with Noone: “Wanna go on a ride?”
NOONE: He said,
RUSTY, bg., ov. with Noone: “It’s the best one, because it lets you see clearly.”
NOONE: So, I said yes, feeling… a part of their gang. I’ve never had that before.
[Carnival games and music, steps]
NOONE: We passed by games and silly booths until we came to… the giant wheel. [The ferris wheel creaks] We climbed into the seats in pairs, me and Rusty taking the last cart.
[Sitting, the wheel creaks again]
NOONE: It went so high up that… I could see the whole carnival. It was… unnaturally high, like – like we were in the sky itself. [Wind blows, music quiets] Rusty pointed to these tall wooden polls, like- masts on a ship, as if that answered where we were, but… how could a ship be in the air? Rusty saw my face full of questions and said,
RUSTY, ov. with NOONE: “Look down, not out. You won’t feel sick that way, and we haven't much time.”
[Wind blows]
NOONE: I… I remember feeling, for a moment, things were OK. On the giant wheel, for the first time in such a long time I… I felt… happy. But, Rusty… he suddenly seemed so sad. His voice shifted and he continued,
RUSTY, ov. with NOONE: “That massive tent there, that’s the Big Top.”
NOONE: He said we’d be going there soon because him and his friends had a show to put on. I already knew the answer, but I asked anyway: “You don’t like performing, do you.” He looked glum for a moment before replying: “I hate it.” When I asked why he does it, Rusty mumbled to himself,
RUSTY, bg.: I…
NOONE: … But I couldn’t hear with the wind so loud. Finally Rusty turned and said,
RUSTY, ov. with Noone: “They force us. And whatever they say, goes.”
NOONE: I didn’t know who “they” were, but a bad feeling came over me and… I understood why we were really on that wheel. Because, all the way up there, he could say what was in his heart without worrying about being heard.
[Creaking wood]
NOONE: As the wheel came around, he began explaining very fast how him and his friends had been planning. Rusty wanted me to be part of a special show, where they would try something they’d never done before. He told me that my job was to be lookout. That if… I saw a man in a purple suit, I needed to give him the sign while he walked the tightrope. I asked, “Is this the man who makes you put on shows?” Without really answering, Rusty kept talking.
RUSTY, ov. with Noone: “In the spotlight, some glow, while others shrivel into shadows. We glow, and do as told, or…”
NOONE: He didn’t finish the thought, but, I understood. The times I was on TV, I’d have done anything to avoid all those lights. So I said, “A simple sign won’t do. I’ll have to shout. A code only we’ll understand. How about… Big Top?” He agreed it was a good idea and I realized he didn’t tell me what they were planning, but… when I saw him staring out at the clouds, I asked, “You mean to escape, don’t you? The carnival?” And he quickly said,
RUSTY, ov. with NOONE: “This entire… rotten world.”
[Silence. Narration stops.]
[Machine whirring]
OTTO: Was the boy expressing knowledge of a world beyond this carnival?
NOONE: I hadn’t thought about it until now, but… I guess so. And, I felt that too.
OTTO: Then – All the places you’ve been are one and the same?
NOONE: Sort of. It’s like how this basement is connected to the upper floors, but don’t work- together.
OTTO: Why didn’t you ever express this before?!
NOONE: What’s so impo–
OTTO, interrupting: You’ve sensed that the dreams you visit hold a tangible, sustained existence?! That these spaces are objective!? Physically… there?!
NOONE: I — uh, I think so? I don’t know how it works, but… it feels that way, yes. …Do you finally believe me?
OTTO: Giving the mere thought validity would have my license revoked! Yet I admit there’s potential that what you say is true. It offers some explanation of your… spiriting away, last night.
[Pause, machine running in the background]
OTTO: …I’d need to see it for myself.
NOONE: See it yourself?! You’re supposed to help me avoid going there!
OTTO: I need to reach it with you! To find that… quidity of consciousness we spoke of!
NOONE: Why would you want that?
OTTO: …
NOONE: How can I trust you if you don’t answer my questions sometimes?! It isn’t fair!
OTTO: (Sigh) …I… I lost someone dear to me, you understand? A long time ago. …Part of me believes that they may be there.
NOONE: (Upset) So that’s the reason you’re so fascinated by me, isn’t it?! [Starting to breathe hard again] That’s why you have me do- all these tests and experiments, to find them!
OTTO: Now you’re the one being unfair.
NOONE: Well, you can’t even get there!
OTTO: Why not?!
[Noone’s breathing quiets, still upset]
NOONE: …it’s Nowhere.
OTTO: Nowhere? What do you mean??
NOONE: It’s a place… that Is… and Isn’t.
OTTO: Did the boy, [stuttering] Rusty, say that? The Candleman??
NOONE: Neither.
OTTO: I can’t help you if you hide things from me.
NOONE: I tell you everything! You know what’s in my brain- more than I do!
NOONE: [breathing harder] There’s things on my head.
OTTO: Breathe, Noone… breathe…breathe. Deep. Follow my rhythm.
[Noone and Otto take deep breaths, pulsing notes rise in the background]
OTTO: Alright, okay. If the theatrics are done, we must press on.
NOONE: I want to stop.
OTTO: The sooner you finish, the sooner we’ll be free.
[Noone pauses, takes a few more deep breaths]
NOONE, narrating: We went to the Big Top. Rusty, and the others got all dressed up. In- amazing costumes. Black and white with sparkles. And another in… a fancy red coat.
NOONE: Rusty lead me round to the towering stage, placing me in the front, saying,
RUSTY, ov. with NOONE: “Best seats in the house.”
NOONE: I felt… so special. [distant music starts] Until, Rusty looked around, with that worried face again. Without another word, he went backstage, as the crowd started pouring in.
[Distorted speech]
NOONE: These… “people”... were the wrong shape. Faces like… bad drawings come alive. [thunk] One sat down in the seat to my left, eating… [crunching] a candy apple. It… it stank horribly [Dream!Noone gags] and, the center was mushy and raw.
NOONE: These… plump bodies filled the seats, too big for them, crushing and… spilling into one another. [Crunching and chewing] At the same time stuffing their faces with- rancid snacks, all grisly and chewy. I thought to throw up, but, as the lights dropped, [lights shutting off] everything went still.
[Pause, light turns on]
NOONE: Then… [drumroll, faint trumpet] a spotlight [cheering] illuminated the stage, and the kid in a red coat walked to the middle. He put on amazing magic tricks, [whoosh] that almost made me forget where I was. For his final trick, he waved around the swirling cloak, smoke spilling out, and topped off with a bang! [sparkles pop, cheering]
NOONE: When cloak dropped, he had disappeared, [whooshing] and in his place, were two different kids. They had sticks near their mouths, blowing fire. That did it for the crowd. [Distorted cheering gets louder] Then I remembered– I was playing lookout! But I saw no man in a purple suit, and I was distracted as the firebreathers finished and, jugglers came on.
[More cheering]
NOONE: They took the flaming sticks from their friends, and threw them so high in the air, [Dream!Noone cheering] I… I found myself cheering with the crowd! [Dream!Noone clapping and cheering] And then the lights went down again, [click, drumroll] marking the final act.
NOONE: (Quiet) The spotlight blared again, shining at the top of the tent. Way up… standing at one end of a rope between two ladders… was Rusty. The others stopped, staring in complete quiet. He started walking… slowly… then with more confidence. The silent went on too long, like we were all under a spell. And… that’s when I noticed… [quiet breathing] something beside me, in the seat that had been empty a moment ago.
OTTO: (incredibly distant) The man in the purple suit?
NOONE: I heard him before I saw him. [breathing] T…Two breaths. Why could I hear him breathing? Why could I feel them breathing? My was shaking but, his attention was on Rusty.
[Cheering, Dream!Noone gasps]
NOONE: Noticing that I wasn’t cheering, the man turned. He had no eyes. But I felt him look at me. How can someone with no eyes look at you?
[More breathing, cheering picks up again]
NOONE: Then, I saw a smaller man in his lap. [A smaller, faster set of breathing starts] A- dummy, only… he wasn’t made of wood or plastic, and had hair atop a lumpy face where… a wider mouth had been carved out. Unlike the man, the puppet had eyes, staring at the spotlight above.
NOONE: Suddenly the crowd burst into a cheer, [cheering] as Rusty reached the middle of the rope, but, the dummy’s face crinkled, full of hate- wanting those cheers for himself. I was the only one not clapping, and he turned to face me. I’m not sure if they spoke, or- if it was in my head, but with a smile, they invited me to be part of the show.
NOONE: [Cheering gets louder] That’s when I shouted “Big Top! Big Top!” But the crowd was booming! Rusty made it across the rope, but… but instead of climbing down the ladder he began climbing towards a small cut in the fabric at the top of the tent. I turn back… and the man was still there, limp, but his dummy… his dummy was… [Noone’s breathing picks up] gone, right near- Rusty–
NOONE: [Breathing heavily now] “BIG TOP!” I tried to scream– tearing my throat, but– I had no breath!– And then– [Attempts a deep breath] I saw the dummy– It’s lumpy face peering out from the shadows– at the top of the tent– Waiting for Rusty.
[Ambience become more intense]
NOONE: The man beside me grew shy– both loving the praise, and– regretting the attention. [Noone’s breathing gets faster, ambience picks up] I can hear him breathing again– between breaths– (unintelligible)*– I tried and tried to shout but– it was too late!– Rusty was finally out of the spotlight!– And the tiny doll man lunged!– And– Rusty!– Rusty–
OTTO: [Dream ambience suddenly stops, loud machinery] Did he escape, did he manage?
NOONE, not narrating: Get this thing!– off my head!!
OTTO: Was Rusty able to get away?!
NOONE: [Hyperventilating] NO I DON’T LIKE IT! Rusty!!–
[Noone continues hyperventilating, machinery gets louder]
OTTO: Okay- okay okay- alright, alright, deeep breaths. Deeeep breaths, follow me. Like this now, one-
NOONE: AAA! TWO!! BIG TOP!!
[Otto attempting to get Noone to breathe, Noone having a panic attack]
OTTO: Slow down, slow down, slow down- breathe.
NOONE: RUSTY!! TWO!!! TWO!!!
OTTO: Just breathe-
NOONE: BIG TOP!! THE BIG TOP!!!
OTTO: Two… three… One… two…
NOONE: Deep breaths– One– One body**–
[machinery suddenly shuts down]
OTTO: Noone? [suddenly standing up] Noone! Noone!
[Shifting, moving furniture, crashing. Audio cuts]
[Pause]
[Click, audio starts]
OTTO: Mercifully, the only irreparable damage this evening was the wound cut in Noone’s confidence towards me. (Inhale) What concerns me more is the lack of detail in her retelling. A step backwards, which may be the result of her preoccupation with the testing equipment.
OTTO: Her body dysmorphia was exacerbated. That celebrity doctor’s to blame, whatever he put her through. And all those poor children… but it’s causing her to become furtive.
[pen clicks, paper rustling]
OTTO: I’ve exhumed the journals published by my outer circle of colleagues, with whom I’ve lost touch. [pages turning] While I previously entertained the possibility of a multitude of realms, a singular space seems more probable, and in line with their transcendental musings.
[Closes paper]
OTTO: While their studies are conjecture, I can no longer deny the empirical signs pointing towards such peripheral existence! Why then, are my senses unable to perceive it whatsoever? There’s a veil up. Ha! Yes, like a two-way mirror. Only I’m the one stuck on the side of blind, deaf, and dumb ignorance.
OTTO: (sigh) And the lurking presence of the Ferryman. While he may be a master of dream manipulation, he’s no denizen here. Noone said it many sessions ago: He does not belong in our world. And yet, he’s the connective tissue. I am determined to find his arcane hinterland- to cross into the place she calls… “Nowhere.”
[Outro plays]

I remember you once wrote a post about wanting to create a comic based on TSON. How is the work going? (or maybe you've given up on this case altogether)
I HAVE ABSOLUTELY NOT GIVEN UP! Process has been a little stale as of the past few days because I need to work on commissions (and if anyone wants comm me watch out because I'll have a sale next week!), but I have been posting some stuff about it! Just a week ago I posted some of the concept arts, and I have decided how I want to split the workflow.
Each update should be roughly 30 pages each, making it approximately 10 minutes of content. So episodes of the Podcast should be split in half each/a bit over a half. It's a manageable flow for me so I can work more efficiently while also giving out lots of new content.
Expect the first part to come out somewhere during mid to late November!

Here's some silly TSON related sketches of Otto and Sisi from the fic I wrote of them to come with the ask ^^
Thank you for your ask and for the interest :]

Chapter 3 - The Theater of the Mind
(Once again made with @queen0fm0nsterz!!!)
Chapter 1
Chapter 2
-------------
[Click]
[Otto sighs, shifting]
OTTO: Noone vanished last night.
[Another sigh]
OTTO: As she slept, I was monitoring her ultradian sleep cycle. There was no REM/NREM oscillation; instead, involuntary spasms grew progressively worse. [shift] As I was about to wake Noone, her… body… evanesced. For a split instant- then returned, calm as can be.
OTTO: [deep breath, loud exhale] Lacking sleep, I can’t be sure I wasn’t hallucinating. Yet the image of her sheets deflating… is imprinted upon my mind. [Sigh] After yesterday’s session, no less, when she claimed to hear this:
[Click, tape plays]
Recording of NOONE: “The faraway drifts near. Tread long, then, sink deep. Two flows from one, and here, is whole again.”
[Click, tape stops]
OTTO: A coincidence? [light clinking of ceramic/glass] Or, synchronicity? …(Scoff) Is that that bloody moth again?!
[Loud smack, Otto sits back down]
OTTO: Riddle piles upon riddle, and answers continue to elude. [Tape rewinding] I’ll sift through every word if I must.
[Intro plays]
[Click]
[Loud clicking and clacking, electric humming, Otto screwing something in]
OTTO: [Humming drops, returns] It’s clear. Noone’s symptoms go beyond parasomnias. [Continuing to build] Her retellings are too detailed, vocabulary too advanced, as if derived from the oneiric itself.
[Humming raises in pitch, clicking]
OTTO: However, what I find impossible to believe is that Noone’s seen who you saw, Cici. [Chair creaks, clattering] If two people, without any contact, shared the exact same observation, is it proof of transpersonal dreaming?
[Otto’s building continues]
OTTO: But such implies concurrence! And these dreams are years apart! Then… no. [buzzing picks up] I cannot be taken to metaphysical backwaters. Sounding like my old professor. [building] I’ve remained balanced over the years by clinging to the notion that my recollection of what happened years ago was wrong. [click, humming gets loud again] But now, those memories are coming home to roost.
[Clicks, electronic humming, building stops]
OTTO: [Shift] Before I began at the CPI I promised to finish this apparatus. I let it fall away, convinced that attempting it was fool’s work. Now struggling to put myself in her shoes, well. Fool me twice.
[Humming gets louder, buzzes out completely as it shocks Otto and he lets out an “Oh!”]
[A small pained noise from Otto before he starts to put the apparatus away]
[Door opens]
OTTO: (Gasp) Noone! [Scoff, he walks away from the recorder] You’re meant to wait outside.
NOONE: (Far away) What are you working on?-
[Audio cuts]
[Click, blank noise]
[Audio starts again]
OTTO: We’ve come to know each other better over the past weeks, haven’t we?
NOONE: Because we’re friends! That’s why. And, friends tell each other things.
OTTO: Friends. That’s right. One of the absolutes I’ve come to realize is that, the more time you spend with someone, the harder it becomes to hide who you really are. The only exception to this rule is with the company of oneself- we willfully hide what we’d rather not face. Like, the Candleman you mentioned seeing, under hypnosis.
NOONE: I don’t like that.
OTTO: What?
NOONE: Hiding things from myself.
OTTO: Nobody likes it. That’s why it’s important to reveal your inner face. “Depth analysis”, we call it. And so, I’d like you to think of this session as a dialogue with your unconscious mind- you are asking the questions, not me.
NOONE: …Asking myself questions?
OTTO: I’ll help! But, as you go, I’d like you to try. So! This… Candleman. Did you see him again?
NOONE: I-I did.
OTTO: And what was this meeting like?
NOONE: …He was much clearer. Not just him, everything about it. My nightmare.
OTTO: Elaborate, please. Was it worse? More vivid?
NOONE: What’s it like- Uhm… as if I’m watching a film, that I’m also the star of. And when I woke… it was here, in the Coppy, that felt more like the dream.
OTTO: Hm, more palpable. The Candleman-
NOONE: I can’t talk about him without the rest. …If this is an interview with myself, might I begin where I want?
OTTO: Of course! Let your imagination run. But don’t be afraid to interact with the dream. This is an important step in our process- the dialogue. Bring together the divided parts of yourself.
NOONE: …The mirror.
OTTO: Pardon?
NOONE: The one off your shelf. If I’m meant to speak to myself, well…
OTTO: [Pause] …Patients aren’t meant to have mirrors, but, here you are, my bright girl.
[Otto gives her the mirror]
OTTO: Begin as you please.
[Pause]
NOONE, Narrating: …In the dark… a hand let go of mine.
[Slip noise, Dream!Noone gasps. Dream ambience begins.]
NOONE: Opening my eyes, I lay on hot concrete, staring up at a sky with- no sun. And… before me was, endless grey, broken by- yellow lines of paint, all the way to the horizon!
NOONE: Standing, in that carpark, I heard a silence. So silent, my own heartbeat was a marching drum in comparison. …It was followed by… a loneliness, so lonely, I could hardly bear it. I had to turn away.
[Dream!Noone walking on gravel]
NOONE: Behind me, I was glad to see a building! A shopping mall, so large I- I felt half my normal size. Its doors opened, [sliding gravel] and I ran to them.
[running footsteps, transition from gravel to tile. Doors close behind Dream!Noone.]
NOONE: Inside the promenade, [lights click on] the lights flicked on, one by one, greeting me as the PA speakers came alive with music.
[Tinny, slightly off-sounding mall music]
NOONE: It had been ages since I’d visited a shopping center. I didn’t know where to start!
OTTO: You saw no need to find an exit right away?
NOONE: I felt like I was in good hands. But many shops were closed, though. There were no doors, and… no displays in the windows. Or, there must have been a private entrance, because- I could see shadows beyond the glass.
NOONE: …A-after passing by several shops this way, I grew disappointed, but that’s when… a cowboy’s voice came over the speaker.
COWBOY, slightly overlapped with Noone: “Sale at Jujube’s Toys! Dolls, games, puzzles, and more! Ground floor by the fountain!”
NOONE: I could see that fountain in front of me! And on the other side, was… a bright green storefront, with bubbles floating out the entrance.
[Dream!Noone walking over, doors hiss as they open. Different tinny music.]
NOONE: Shelves and- shelves of wonders lined the shop! The toys on the first shelf were very old, but… deeper shelves held the same toys I had back home, and deeper ones held exactly those I’d wish for, even Little Lotty Potty! But… these Lotties had black eyes, not blue. And their skin was… yellow, like autumn leaves.
NOONE: The shop owner wasn’t present, so… I grabbed one and began playing on the carpet.
[Dream!Noone humming Six’s Theme. Doll makes automated noises.]
NOONE: But, it didn’t take long for me to grow… bored. That was the first time I… I felt too old for dolls.
OTTO: (distant-sounding) Maturity is natural as you approach adolescence. The brain loses interest in things once held dear.
NOONE: The idea of growing up made me sad. And as if reacting… Lotty’s dress became wet. The doll was doing as its name said, but… [doll chattering] the liquid was- dark and thick. I put her down to find something else. But the choices were almost too many! Towering shelves extending deep in- the gloom of the impossibly long shop!
NOONE: I settled on the games section, but, most were meant for two. Suddenly, a staticky whisper said,
Voice, overlapping with NOONE: “I’ll play with you.”
NOONE: I-I thought it was the shopkeeper, but… nobody was around. My eyes fell upon a jewelry-making kit, with a red necklace on the cover. I took the box back to where I left Lotty, only… she was gone. The shelf above, where the other dolls had been, was completely empty too. I wanted to make the jewelry, I really did, but… I felt weird, so… I put it down. Then, the PA crackled, a woman’s voice this time:
Voice, ov. NOONE: “Jujube’s Toys is now closing.”
NOONE: [Lights clicking off] The lights shut off, bubbles stopped… and, the last thing I saw before exiting… [toy train noises] was the train set crashing to a stop. [quiet fake bell ringing, toy engine stops]
[Dream!Noone walking out of the store]
NOONE: The promenade was empty, still. Each step [steps become echoey] echoed across the walls and floors, which were- pearl white, and had patterns like… veins.
[steps and music continues]
NOONE: I came to three sets of stairs, side-by-side, leading to the next floor. I chose one, and, reaching to the top, I saw another open shop. Mademoiselle’s… (saying it wrong) bijottery.
OTTO: (still distant) Bijouterie. But, regardless- you could read this?
NOONE: Yes. The letters were quite big.
OTTO: …Have you been able to read in your dreams before?
NOONE: I’m not sure. That’s not a question I would ask myself, though, Otto.
OTTO: Apologies.
NOONE, Narrating: The glass case in the center of the room… pulled me in. Full of… gold, and silver necklaces. Hanging in the middle, was… an enchanting red pendant. And before you ask, yes, it was just like on the box at the toy store. T-The PA came on again,
Voice, ov. with NOONE: “A free gift to all little girls 10 and under!”
NOONE: Without asking, I put the necklace on, glowing, like a ruby teardrop. With my gift, I set to leave, but… someone must’ve left the speaker on because… I heard arguing.
NOONE: (overlapping) “Don’t overdo it!” Said a first voice, followed by a second, (overlapping) “One more prize can’t hurt!”
[something being set down, wheels across tile, whoosh]
NOONE: From the back room, a rack of dresses rolled out. All, exactly my size.
[Dream!Noone looking through the dresses]
NOONE: It’d been ages since I’d been allowed to pick out my own dress. The telly people chose them for me. These ones were very pretty, with lace and, and bows and stitching but, one… it… it was the plaid dress I wore the day I arrived at the Coppy. How could my dress be here? [lowering pitch of voice, asking questions to herself] Your real life doesn’t have to mix into your dreams Noone, why now?
OTTO, interrupting narration: (astonished) Pardon?
NOONE: (giggling) I’m asking myself questions. Well, the only explanation is that they could see inside my head.
OTTO: I’m not sure that’s logical.
NOONE: Let me finish! Please. You’ll see.
NOONE, narrating: Back out on the promenade, the shop gates began to slam shut. [Gates slamming] I was worried the mall was closing, but on the floor above, a set of spinning bright lights came on [Lights turn on]. The music stopped and, the PA crackled with a sing-songy voice,
Voice, ov. with NOONE: [music] “Showtime’s patrons! Our daily motion picture will begin shortly. Hot popcorn’s popping and the seats await in the playhouse!”
NOONE: [Lights shutting off] The rest of the mall went dark, making the lights more enticing to follow.
[Dream!Noone walks across the mall]
NOONE: The lobby was- red from floor to ceiling. Buckets of popcorn overflowed on the concession stand. I grabbed one, and hurried to push open the huge golden doors leading into the theater.
[Running steps, doors creak. Slightly off organ music plays.]
NOONE: The velvet seats went for rows and rows, full of people. A spotlight hit the stage, illuminating an organ, but… there was no organ player. Only tall curtains swaying in some breeze. I tiptoed down the aisle, and sat centered with the screen. The chair seemed to hug me, and the room fell dark [crunching] as the first buttery bit hit my tongue.
[Music stops playing, sounds of projector booting up]
NOONE: Without adverts or introduction, the film began. Images of… trees on fire and… white hooves galloping. I recognized the picture instantly because I’ve seen it a hundred times. “The Healing Horn”. [Movie plays] Only the scenes were out of order, and the unicorn… her horn was misshapen, like… a rotten tree branch. The evil prince’s face, too, was… was wrong.
NOONE: Feeling out of place I – I looked around. The audience, I… I realized, was not people but… mannequins.
NOONE: All of a sudden, a familiar scent entered the dream. Ocean. I was no longer alone. The dusty projector light made it difficult to suss, but a few seats over… was the Candleman. His eyes and mouth were… deep black pits inside a mess like a wet gunny sack, sagging down the floor. Without turning, he spoke.
[Growing noise stops]
OTTO, interrupting abruptly: He – what?! [Shifting] What did he say?
NOONE: [Sighing] It was like a – a voice underwater. The words could hardly escape the folds of skin. He repeated them to me.
NOONE as the FERRYMAN, glitching: “The faraway drifts near. Tread long, then sink deep. Two flows from one, and here, is whole again.”
OTTO: And then? [shifting in the chair] What else?
NOONE, as the FERRYMAN: “Here. Here. Here.”
NOONE: He just repeated over and over.
OTTO: There must be more! Try, try! Interact with the dream!
NOONE: There was no more!
OTTO: (raising his voice) Ask who he is, ask what he wants!
NOONE: (raising her voice) It doesn’t work that way!
OTTO: You were right there! Don’t tell me you did nothing?! Not a damn thing!
NOONE: Stop!
OTTO: [farther away] I’m beginning to doubt you’ve seen this Candleman! [Noone struggling] Perhaps you’ve invented the whole story!
NOONE: Please, stop- my head!
[Otto hisses (gets hit?), sounds of something being knocked over, Noone runs out of the room.]
[Otto huffs and stops the tape]
[Click. Blank noise. Another click]
[Various shifting noises. Silence. Door opens and someone walks, then closes it]
OTTO: [far away, stern] What are you doing? With the mirror. [Steps] You’re up to something, but we’ll let it slide. I know girls like you.
[Shifting]
OTTO: You’re upset with me, aren’t you? [plastic clacking] Here. A pill for your headache. (Sigh) Earlier, that was… awfully…[Otto sits] that- that was not how friends act. Sleep has evaded me too. I’ve grown worried, trying to… please, forgive me. I’d very much like to hear the rest. I won’t interrupt, you have my word.
[Silence.]
NOONE: … Fine.
OTTO: So… you were in this theater with him.
NOONE, narrating: … All kinds of pictured* flashed on the screen, and then he was gone, leaving me alone again. Or so I thought. The projector flickered in the booth. I dashed up, and found the door ajar. A new voice came over the PA, angry. “No patrons in the projection room!” The door was stuck, but I pushed and pushed. The PA boomed,
VOICE, ov. with NOONE: “You must not enter!”
[Crashing, door opens]
NOONE: The projector I saw first was shaped like… a deformed eye. Then, my attention fell to… the mass on the floor. [Slimy sound] A brain? A heart? …No. It’s muscles pumped and pumped, and its tubes ran into the walls. The voice came, both from inside the room and over the PA:
VOICE, ov. with NOONE: “Happy day, No One.”
NOONE: It… it knew my real nickname. The ones kids at school scribbled all over my books. How? Because it was in my head. …I asked, “You’re the one who’s been talking? All those voices?”. Then, I saw countless film cans around the room, and understood. It was so alone, it took to imitating. Then it said,
VOICE, ov. with NOONE: “Are you going to leave? Like all the others?”
NOONE: I managed a… “Yes”. The thing began pulsing and, upset, it sort of cried out.
VOICE, ov. with NOONE: “So many, they take what they want and go, or get snatched away or worse!”
NOONE: It paused, then went on,
VOICE, ov. with NOONE: “Whatever you desire, it’s yours.”
NOONE: … But I didn’t want anything from it. The PA belted,
VOICE, ov. with NOONE: “The pendant! You wanted that!”
NOONE: The pulsing worsened until another voice came within the first,
VOICE 2, ov. with NOONE: “You’ve driven another away!” [Not overlapping, repeating: “You’ve driven another away!]
NOONE: I felt bad for it. Or them… this place had been warped by pain, and wanted so badly to keep me. Even the walls began throbbing. What could I do?!
[Noise intensifies, Dream!Noone breathes heavily]
NOONE: I – I ran. Down the stairs, out of the theater.
[Dream!Noone runs away]
NOONE: On the promenade, the lights were flashing so as to be dizzying. The PA screeched,
VOICE, ov. with NOONE: “Everyone needs someone! Don’t leave me alone!”
NOONE: The walls began to cry that dark thick liquid, pooling around me, I looked up. From the floor above, the Candleman stared, pointing at my chest. At the pendant. I flung it down into the liquid, then he reached a hand toward me and –
[All noise stops]
NOONE: And all faded, as the PA sobbed,
VOICE, ov. with NOONE: “Don’t take her! Not this one, too…”
[Narration stops. Silence. Shifting]
OTTO: T-There was um… uh, e-excuse me, a curious phrase. “Warped by pain”. Is that how you feel, sometimes?
[Silence]
OTTO: Noone? Are you still angry with me? Or… distracted by the mirror?
NOONE: Behind my ear…  there’s… a sore.
OTTO: Is that why you wanted the mirror all along?
NOONE: [Hum] It’s like the ones I used to get. I need to see it.
[Shifting]
OTTO: Nothing’s there. It’s red because you’ve been picking at it.
NOONE: …I have one more question for myself. Why do I have these dreams? Water sickness, that’s my answer.
OTTO: Noone. It’s wiped out of your system. There have been no known reinfections. It’s in your mind.
NOONE: (with increasing distress) What if the cure is the cause? I never had nightmares or headaches before all of this, before going on telly, before – before this! –
OTTO, interrupting: (whispering) No, no, come, come, come, come here, my girl. [Shifting, Otto hugs Noone] You’re not sick. You’re perfectly fine. You’re a perfectly wonderful little girl. This time I will protect you.
[The mirror falls on the ground and breaks]
NOONE: I’m sorry! I’m sorry, uh, you were squeezing so tight and… it slipped.
[The mirror shards are picked up. Otto throws them away]
OTTO: You asked why you dream. The truth? Nobody knows. My studies always assumed they were more than the brain’s way of filtering unconscious thoughts. But I had no answer either. An old professor of mine thought he did. He believed dreams come from an ever shifting plane, a quiddity of consciousness.
NOONE: Quidd-i-ty…
OTTO: Quiddity. The essence of a thing. In this case, a semiatangible plane outside the mind.
NOONE: Is it the same as mutual dreams? I don’t understand.
OTTO: My colleagues didn’t either. I’ve flip-flopped over the years, but I figured it was impossible to prove.
NOONE: Will I ever get rid of them, then? Will I ever leave the Coppy?
OTTO: You must understand, you are a unique case. I want to let you go, as soon as –
NOONE, interrupting: I’m better?
OTTO: (sighing) Yes. As soon as you’re better. [Otto stands, picks something up] Now –
NOONE: I know, I know. (Lower pitch, mimicking Otto) “Sweets for my sweet”. …Do I have to go back to my room?
[Sounds of plates]
OTTO: I’ve- got to tidy, [wrappers] and, you reminded me there’s something I need to find. On you go. I’ll come by later.
[Shift, audio cuts]
[Audio starts]
[Otto looks through papers, and sighs]
OTTO: Ah, I found it. The paper that stained my professor’s career. Kept it all these years, hoping and dreading there was truth in these words…
OTTO, reading: “We know now that there is no center to the universe. Previously we thought it was the Sun, before that we thought it was the Earth. Our species always insists that ours is the quintessence of experience. Yet scientific observation proves our folly ad nauseum. If geocentrism took centuries to disprove, the question is not if but when the same will happen to reality itself. That which we are equipped to perceive may not be the only world. Let alone the predominant one.”

[Outro plays]

The forgotten child
The Little Nightmares franchise is iconic and mysterious for many things, but nothing is more mysterious and iconic than the little yellow raincoat. While it may seem like a simple piece of clothing to some, we all inevitably come to find this single little yellow raincoat has a history of its own, and with the release of The Sounds of Nightmares podcast, its story is now deeper than ever before. I and many other theorists have covered the topic of the yellow raincoat in the past ( here), but with the release of the podcast, new information is finally brought to light.
Tumblr media
Theorists have pondered the true origins of the yellow raincoat many times before, but no matter what was talked about, things would always narrow down to two simple questions time and time again... where did it come from?.... and who was its original owner?
Before the release of the podcast, only two living children were seen wearing the raincoat, the girl in the yellow raincoat from Very Little Nightmares and Six. Six encountered the girl in the yellow raincoat back at the Nest, but after the girl's demise, it was the raincoat which survived, drifting away along with the ocean current .
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As for how it could have journeyed from the ocean to the deeper parts of the Pale City... well... your guess is as good as mine, but we always theorized the yellow raincoat was brought to the shores of the Pale City where it was discovered by someone else (child or Resident), then finally taken to the deeper parts of the Pale City where Mono and Six would discover it for themselves.
Tumblr media
However, given Little Nightmares 2 is a prequel to Little Nightmares, there was still one more piece to the puzzle to be considered....the portrait aboard the Maw depicting a little girl wearing the yellow raincoat.
Tumblr media
Many theories have surrounded the girl in the portrait, but based on what little we could gather at the time, I and many other theorists had theorized the girl in the portrait could potentially be the girl in the yellow raincoat from very Little Nightmares, whether or not she is still remains unknown, but regardless, we do know this, the Maw was the last known place the yellow raincoat was active within the world of the Nowhere, before the sounds of nightmares podcast finally revealed its original owner .
In chapter 6 of the sounds of nightmares, as Noone tells of her recent visit to the Nowhere, she recounts discovering the iconic yellow raincoat in a chest filled with other small clothing. As a result of Otto's reaction, it was now clear the raincoat's original owner was none other than Sisi, a girl from the Counties and Otto's big sister no less. We have long theorized the events of the Little Nightmares podcast could potentially take place before the events of the franchise, and yet despite finally concluding the origins of the yellow raincoat, new questions have now come forth....Who is Sisi? and how does she fit into the mystery of the yellow raincoat and the world of the Nowhere?
While some have theorized Sisi could be either Six or the girl in the yellow raincoat, it wasn't long before I and many other theorists realized something, something so simple we didn't think to consider it from the start. We know years ago, in the Counties, when Otto was just a boy, Sisi made the decision to accept the Ferryman's offer to stay in the Nowhere, because of this, everyone initially attempted to find a child in the Nowhere who could be Sisi...but perhaps it was never a child we were meant to look for...perhaps...it was always someone who lost themselves throughout the years in the Nowhere.
We have always theorized time within the Nowhere was abnormal, everywhere we looked, we could see the peculiar rhythm and details of the clocks within the world and how they ran through the passage of time in many different ways (more here). Leaving many children, like the teenagers Noone encountered in chp.4, to grow up in this world of nightmares just as they would have in the world they once called home...until they too would become one of the many Residents seen throughout the Nowhere....where am I going with this?...well, what if maybe...just maybe... Sisi faced the same fate.
No one knows what happened to Sisi in the Nowhere... and yet... given everything we have been provided...maybe we were always told what happened to her, through the one thing she was known to wear...the yellow raincoat. When Sisi permanently left the Counties for the Nowhere, her yellow raincoat went with her, and wherever the raincoat was last seen, a child would have had to been there along with it. Noone found the raincoat in the Sewing room she spoke of in chp 6....but there was no child in the room besides her. The raincoat was the only thing left in the chest among other clothing in need of repairs, almost as if… the raincoat was also in need of repairs. Perhaps it was no coincidence the yellow raincoat wound up in the sewing room, because maybe...just maybe...it was never abandoned in the sewing room, let alone discovered by someone else before it was left there…no… it was brought to the puppet to be repaired…by the very person who valued it before anyone else, Sisi. If what we theorized is true, then could this potentially mean the child Otto once knew Sisi to be...was no longer a child...but a woman walking amongst the Residents in the Nowhere?...maybe. But if Sisi is truly now a grown woman then...where is she?...maybe we always knew.
As stated before, The Maw was the last place we knew the raincoat was active in the world of the Nowhere, but could this mean Sisi was at some point within the Maw and left?…or was she always there. The girl in the portrait may have worn the yellow raincoat, but does this mean the girl in the portrait was Sisi?...or was the girl in the portrait simply the child who obtained the raincoat after Sisi outgrew it...where am I going with this? well...what if Sisi did board the Maw, but rather than escape it, she remained within it, not as a child...but as the Lady of the Maw we've all come to know in Little Nightmares.
Tumblr media
We have always theorized many Residents within the Nowhere were once children themselves, and the "Lady" in particular was not necessarily a single person, but a title inherited through a vicious cycle of successors, where a new young girl would overthrow the former Lady of the Maw and obtain both the powers and title of "Lady" for themselves, until they too inevitably became corrupted and distorted by the world just as many Residents before. We have seen the Lady of Little Nightmares enough to theorize many things about her, but of all the things we have theorized, at some point, one can only look on at this strange woman living her silent and lonely life in the Maw, and realize she too was once a forgotten child of the world, as for who she was before all this, well... what if maybe...just maybe...she was always Sisi.
Not much is known about Sisi, let alone what her life was like, but never the less, she must have lived out a life of torment as these are the children the Ferryman is known to target to bring to the Nowhere(more here). If what we theorized about Sisi is true, and if she truly became the Lady of the Maw from Little Nightmares, then perhaps it was Sisi's desperation to find a place where she could finally get away from the chaos she lived through which inevitably left her trapped within the Maw, a structure which we have always theorized to be a living being of its own watching over the Lady, corrupting and pacifying her to never think about leaving, because without her, it would surely die... just like the Mall in the sounds of nightmares (more here). Of course, if the Residents taught us anything, its this...no life in the Nowhere is ever freed of torment, because this twisted world they reside in, thrives off it.
Tumblr media
The Residents of the Nowhere are fueled by their corrupted desires/base instincts, and yet no matter how much they try, their desires can never be fulfilled, they are trapped in a constant state of need for something. Despite belonging within the Maw, and despite having lived a life where she could have everything she could ever want, the Lady was not happy with the life she lived, we have seen her look on aimlessly from a distance as the Guests arrived, we have seen her stroke her hair in her silent empty quarters, cry out over the hideous monster her reflection revealed her to be and we have seen her gently stroke the head of a baby doll as a lullaby played in the background. The Lady had everything she wanted...but not what she needed...something was always missing....or rather...someone.
Tumblr media
Of the many portraits we have seen within the Maw, there was one portrait in particular which raised questions towards the Lady...the portrait of her standing next to a girl, the same girl we saw in another portrait wearing the yellow raincoat. We had always theorized the Lady of the Maw desired a child to stand by her side as she continued to live within the Maw, but this child was far from a daughter, she was a possession, another doll for the Lady to admire...and resent. If what we theorized about the Lady is true and if she is truly Otto's long lost Sisi, then perhaps it was the constant presence of her raincoat which hinted to her of the life she once had in the Counties with Otto, moving her to try and obtain what she no longer had...a family...even if she couldn't remember.
We have always theorized any memories the Residents had from their once human lives, were lost as the world of the Nowhere changed them, just like it did for the Sewer man in chp.5 of the sounds of nightmares, who had but a single little child's propeller hat, which we theorized once belonged to him when he was a child, but had now been tucked away, forgotten and ignored, as if it alone was the last link he had of his former life, but was now a constant reminder of both a reality he so desperately wanted to forget and a silent memory of the life he wanted to once again obtain above the sewers (more here). If the Lady had no memory of who she used to be, let alone of the life she once lived, then perhaps it was the yellow raincoat which brought back the simple desire to once again have someone by her side, leaving her willing enough to take a child for herself and not leave them in the cold prison where the rest were kept below the Maw.
However, even if the Lady decided to take a child for herself, would she have been willing to give the girl in the portrait her precious raincoat?...or did the girl find it? The Lady is not above hiding things within her quarters, so if the girl in the portrait did end up discovering the raincoat, then her actions alone would have been met with a great sense of punishment as the Lady saw her own reflection within another girl, reminding her of the person she used to be and the torment she once lived, the life she lost and the people she left behind. We've always theorized the Residents lived in a constant state of ignorance, avoiding and lashing out at any and all things which could bring their minds back to the true reality of their situation and their lives.
And so to see the Lady act the way she did when Six appeared wearing the same yellow raincoat which could have once belonged to her, and of which was later worn by the child who stood beside her in the portrait, a child who we theorized had one day abandoned her to escape, one can only imagine the sheer anger she felt to see the raincoat once again return within the hands of another child. The Lady never showed Six the mercy of turning her into a Nome like other children who faced her, no, she aimed to kill Six as she alone dared to appear within the Maw wearing a little yellow raincoat, a raincoat which never belonged to her, it belonged to someone else, the Lady herself.
Tumblr media
If what we theorized is true, then the Lady's end would have been met with a great sense of irony as she witnessed a reflection of herself in another girl wearing her once beloved raincoat... walking towards her to end her and obtain the powers of the Lady for herself...just as she did many years ago to the former Lady of the Maw( theorized to be the Granny),
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
only this time...everything was different... because the child before her was different, as Six did the one thing she likely wished she could have done years ago, but no longer had the free will to do....leave the Maw.
Tumblr media
No one knows what happened to Sisi, no one knows what her life was truly like in the Counties, no one knows what happened to her in the Nowhere, and no one knows what she thought about as she left her brother behind....the only thing which remained of her now, was the yellow raincoat she once wore, a simple piece of clothing with a long and complicated past. But regardless of who Sisi was, where she is and what became of her, one thing is certain...this raincoat is far more meaningful than what was originally believed, almost as if this single little yellow raincoat...was the start of something...something big...but now...it has also become the end of it all, the end of what exactly? well...I guess we will just have to wait and see...for now, it's all just a theory...a Little Nightmares theory.
