A Crimpella — VoicePlay music video
youtube
This is one of the more odd and creative things VoicePlay concocted early on. They turned a collection of phonations, sound effects, nonsense words, and foreign language lyrics from two dozen songs into a delightfully goofy performance art piece. You will almost certainly recognize some of the samples. The set-up is a little drawn-out for my taste, but once the beat kicks in, it's off to the races.
Details:
title: A Crimpella
original songs / performers: [2:20] "Walk the Dinosaur" by Was (Not Was); [2:28] "Witch Doctor" by Alvin & the Chipmunks; [2:35] "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang" from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang; [2:40] "We Go Together" from Grease!; [2:47] “Motownphilly” by Boyz II Men; [2:55] "Imma Be" by the Black Eyed Peas; [3:03] "Tutti Frutti" by Little Richard; [3:05] "Shoop" by Salt N Pepa; [3:12] "Jock-A-Mo" (aka "Iko Iko") by James "Sugar Boy" Crawford; [3:20] "Mahna Mahna" from The Muppet Show; [3:30] "Lovin, Touchin, Squeezin" by Journey; [3:54] "Goofy Goober Rock" from The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie; [3:57] "MMMBop" by Hanson; [4:10] "Hooked on a Feeling" by Blue Swede; [4:14] "Bawitdaba" by Kid Rock; [4:19] "Breaking Up Is Hard to Do" by Neil Sedaka; [4:29] "Can't Get You Outta My Head" by Kylie Minogue; [4:32] "Bohemian Rhapsody" by Queen; [4:45] "Bad Romance" by Lady Gaga; [4:51] "Limbo La La" by James Lloyd; [5:01] "All Night Long" by Lionel Richie; [5:18] "Wanna Be Starting Something" by Michael Jackson; [5:24] "Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye" by Steam
arranged by: VoicePlay
release date: 1 September 2012
My favorite bits:
the thump at 2:30 propelling Eli into the air
everyone "watching" the UFO fly by
their most concerted effort at choreography being to "Shoop"
all the tentative poking and grimacing as they try to figure out how to "fix" their necks
Tony rocking out solo while the other guys consider whether to join in
the string of silly noises starting at 4:08
Layne's lowkey Little Monster claws during the Lady Gaga section
Trivia:
○ The boys gnaw on five CD cases at the beginning, but only Earl's album contains a song included in the ensuing medley:
Earl — Cooleyhighharmony by Boyz II Men (1991)
Tony — The Doors' greatest hits (1996 re-release)
Eli — Pump by Aerosmith (1989)
Geoff — Toxic Audio's eponymous debut album (1999)
Layne — Contra by Vampire Weekend (2010)
○ Several of the songs referenced here have appeared in VoicePlay's later medleys or short videos:
The bell tone section from Motownphilly was also included in their Boy Bands in 5 Minutes medley.
Different sections of Bohemian Rhapsody were part of their Queen in 5 Minutes medley.
Hooked on a Feeling and Mahna Mahna have both been featured in recent short-form videos.
○ This piece was included in their setlist for the 2014 Sing-Off tour.
○ This medley was inspired by British comedy troupe The Mighty Boosh. TMB had a series of sketches containing absurdist songs / performance art pieces they called "crimping". (Fair warning, most of their "crimps" feature adult language and gestures.)

TOP 10 CHARACTERS FROM MUPPETS TONIGHT
Tumblr media
@softlytowardthesun @goodanswerfoxmonster @thealmightyemprex @amalthea9 @princesssarisa @the-blue-fairie @themousefromfantasyland @moonbeamelf @angelixgutz
If you're a human being, take a break from the race Take a load off your feet, wipe the load off your face Got a lot to do and we do it for you Everybody take your place Muppets tonight! You're gonna see something better Tonight's the night! You're gonna live with the memories We got a show for you Guaranteed brand new Here come the muppets tonight! [whistling] We got a show for you Guaranteed brand-new Here come the muppets Here come the muppets Here come the muppets tonight!! This was the opening theme of Muppets Tonight, a TV series featuring The Muppets that originally ran from 1996 to 1998, initially as part of ABC's TGIF (A two-hour friday night block of family sitcoms hosted by the various stars of the shows,  often supplemented with animation, running skits, and short gags) that would later hop to Disney Channel. An update of the premise of The Muppet Show, changing the setting from a theater to television studio, it featured the Muppets producing a television variety show with the help  of the episode's guest star.
It wasn’t popular as its predecessour show, and the view of its overall quality remains divisive among Muppet fans.
Personally, after finishing its twenty two episodes, I can see that it was a flawed series, with references that are so specific to the nineties that quickly become dated, and some poorly aged sexist and fatphobic jokes that are cringe inducing.
But I also appreciate the charm and genuine hearth putted into the episodes, specially when it camed to writing the characters, some who camed from previous Muppet movies and specials, others who were created specifically for the show and would even appear in later Muppet movies, specials, comics and shows.
And today, I shall present the ranking of my favorite characters from this underrated part of the franchise.
10º Andy and Randy Pig
First introduced performing alongside Miss Piggy in the Three Little Pigs segment of the direct to VHS film Muppet Classic Theater, these two brothers were retconed as Miss Piggy’s nephews who she called to work on the studio. Originally nobody would dare asking anything from them, because of how dumb they are, but slowly they become accepted as part of the group, going between trying to work (and failing) in the technical department to even writing and performing in sketches.
They often tried their best, until they would admit that “This job is too hard”, but were always there to keep providing mistakes that could give the audience a good chunk of laugh.
Both WITH them, and AT their expense.
09º Dr. Phil Van Neuter
This mad scientist was written as a shoutout to horror anthology hosts, presenting, alongside his hunchbacked creature servant and brother-in-law Mulch, the sketch series “Tales from the Vet”, wich were short horror comedy stories staring animals.
A few episodes later, his segments were last limited to the horror comedy stories, and he had moments like telling how he fell in love with his wife Composta Heap while singing “She Blinded me with Science”, having a videotape of himself getting drunk with eggnog to the audience by Mulch, and paying homage to Dr Frankenstein (whom he says is his great uncle) by trying to ressurect an apparently dead Arsenio Hall.
He is one of the Muppets who leans the most on his dark side, while also knowing how to be a fun performer, wich makes this energetic maniac specially fun to watch.
08º Johnny Fiama
An italian american lounge singer and restaurateur who tries to be a hit with young women, but only gets popular with the old ladies (specially his mom), Johnny Fiama, while overall calm and rarely the starter of a fight, is still a bit of a diva, arrogant and oblivious to how he can be a botter to other people around him.
But he is not really a villain (unless you fear the fact that his surname, besides meaning “Flame”, is also an anagram for “Mafia”), and is clear that he is still an artist who enjoys what he does and can even have some moments of human vulnerability, like when he gets nervous about seeing his idol Tony Bennet.
This moments of vulnerability of the diva mixed with obliviousness are what make him a very interesting character.
07º Sal Minella
The loud chimpanzee who serves as Johnny Fiama’s bodyguard and assistant. Originally, his puppet was the naked chimpanzee who sanged one verse of the Muppet Treasure Island movie opening song “Shiver my Timbers” (The devil himself would have to call them scum). One day, when the puppeteers were working on designing the characters for Muppets Tonight, Bill Barreta was rehearsing singing with the Johnny Fiama puppet, while the other puppeteers were still talking between themselves, not paying attention. So Brian Henson tooked the naked chimpanzee and screamed to everybody to shup and listen to Johnny Fiama, and so Sal Minella was born, receiving a redesign that included a yellow suit by Jane Gootnick. Whereas Johnny Fiama is oblivious and has a laydown attitude to life, Sal Minella is more perceptive of his surroundings and more proactive to solve problems, most of the time agressively, but others with gentleness, like when he takes correspondence courses to become an osteophath and acupuncturist to help treat the physical problems of other characters (with mixed resulcts).
Often Sal Minella will be on the receiving end of a beating or a lightining. But he will stop at nothing to land a hand to help other people. Specially Johnny Fiama.
06º Big Mean Carl
A voracious monsters who cares for nothing else than eathing wathever is in front of him (be it actual cooked food, a sapient living being, or a machine), Big Mean Carl lands several roles troughout the series, be it playing a Big Mean Bunny who eats cute rabbits and pups when the contestant gets an answer wrong at the game show Swift Wits, a psychic who predicts he will eat you, making bubbles come out of his head after eating Bill the Bubble Guy, smashing talking pumpkins, or eating the tape machine, all the while treating what he did as a big performance that he would always finish with a big “Thank you” to the audiences.
Was he good, or was he bad? He probably would say that he didn’t care.
The only thing that mattered to Carl was that he was always hungry.
05º Seymour the Elephant
The character with the big behind. Seymour started working operating the studio’s elevator, before becoming a cook in the Commissary. His biggest dream was to become part of the performers.
Alongside his partner Pepe, he would come up with numbers like telling jokes, a stunt of whipping up a cigar and a cooking show.
And no matter how many times those numbers failed, Seymour would still persist with the dreams of stardom.
He had an innocence and sweetness that never felt forced or manipulative, wich was a nice contrast to other characters who were more cunning or violent.
04º Pepe the King Prawn
Nowadays a part of the main cast alongside the classic characters who originated in The Muppet Show, few people know that Pepe started in Muppets Tonight.
Like Seymour, Pepe also started working operating the studio elevator and ended as a cook in the Commissary, while dreaming to become an actual performer in the show.
At first they tried a vaudeville number with variations of the same song:
I'm Seymour... 'I'm Pepe... 'We're two of a kind. 'I'm a little bit forward, 'And I've got a big behind.
And telling pun related jokes, before dropping that completely to get counsel with the guest stars about what numbers they could come up with.
To contrast with Seymour’s innocence, Pepe was more of a cunning rogue who acted as the brain in their plans. Whereas he could get angry and condescending at the staff or the audience when the numbers failed, he was always patient with Seymour, never  venting his frustrations at him, clearly extablishing that the two had a genuine relationship based on trust, loyalty and friendship, and it was nice to see that in these early days, Pepe was dreaming of stardom not only for himself and based only in being rich and famous, but that it was also a dream that he wanted to make real for a friend and out of love for the stage, wich is one of the excential characteristics of a Muppet.
03º Clifford
Originally a bass player for the Muppet bands Solid Foam and The Electric Mayhem, Clifford received from Kermit (performer and producer) the duty of hosting the show since no one else wanted the job.
His first reaction was fainting while still holding the phone. But rather than run away, he accepted the challenge.
When Clifford became the host of the show, his attitude changed greatly. Whereas in his previous appearances, he was cool and laid-back, being the host made him uptight and irritable, essentially putting him in Kermit's shoes. To be fair, when you're the host of a series filled with crazy characters and situations that would drive anyone up a wall, how else would you feel doing your job?
In the seventeenth episode where the guest was Dennis Quaid, Clifford experienced a whole ark of feeling insecure and tought of giving up on being the host to search another job, before his friends reassured that he had value for them and was needed to help things get on their feet.
And so, the catfish continued his work, bringing with him a great sense of resilience that was to be admired.
02º Rizzo the Rat
I may be cheating since Rizzo first appeared with the classic cast of characters in the 1984 film The Muppets Take Manhattan, but he was reinvented enough to be a part of the main cast in Muppets Tonight and besides, when hasn’t anyone cheated on top ten lists?
Anyway, when he first appeared in the movies and specials, Rizzo was more the character who rided along for the free food while ocasionally providing fun snarky commentary. Then he was promoted to performer and co-host in the direct to VHS movie Muppet Classic Theater, and them he received the important role of Production assistant, who assisted the gang of Muppets Tonight in search of giving a good time to the guest stars and keeping good ratings for the show, besides getting in despair alongside Clifford when they had to deal with a backstage crisis.
He becamed a more proactive and helpfull team member, all the while keeping his snarky and street smart personality and also trolling his friends with some pranks.
That is a great example of a subtle character ark that doesn’t need to be on focus, while the core excense of the personality is intact.
And my number one character from Muppets Tonight is...
01º Bobo the Bear
A more fotorealistic looking Muppet bear, recicling a puppet from The Muppets Take Manhattan, Bobo started as the bumbling security guard who tooked orders too literary, before being developed into a complex character who, while bumbling in some situations, could be very competent in others, sometimes doing small scams to take food from Rizzo, other times making sarcastic jokes with Clifford, impressing Sam the Eagle when articulating an opinion about economy and politics in the “Eagle’s Nest” sketch and specially showing a great sense of empathy and kind hearth when seeing Clifford facing his emotional crisis, leading the gang to ask him to stay.
Besides working as the security guard, Bobo would also perform in the sketches “Fairyland P.D”, wich was a police procedural parody in the scenario of fairy tales and nursery rhymes that he stared alongside Clifford, and “The Real World: Muppets”, a parody of the reality show “The Real World” where he was confined in a house with Clifford, Rizzo the Rat, Bill the Bubble Guy and the goth lady Darci.
His best moment was in the episode guest staring the model Cindy Crawford. There, Bobo falls in love with Cindy after literary being hit by Cupid’s arrow. Unsure of what to say, he first tries to get help from Rizzo. After this fails, Bobo decides to follow his instincts, jumps into a musical number that Cindy was doing with Kermit, and howls the bear mating sound, wich makes Cindy give a chance to a romance with the bear.
A sweet romantic dreamer, emotionally inteligent, cunning, wild and bumbling, Bobo started as a simple one note joke, but, slowly and unexpectedly, becamed a charming tridimensional character.
And that is why he is my favorite character in Muppets Tonight.

Ilka Everhart
with each stroke of her brush, she embodied the essence of a free spirit, unburdened by the weight of expectations, dancing to her own creative rhythm, and leaving a trail of inspiration in her wake.
Her journey into the world of creativity began as early as she could remember. The vibrant colors of crayons fascinated her even before she could form coherent sentences. She saw art not just as a hobby but as a lifeline to her soul, a way to express the feelings and thoughts that often went unnoticed in the bustling household.
name: ilka everhart
date of birth: jakarta, january 18 1996
mbti: ISTJ
occupation: ceramic artist, painter
Ilka, born in the hazy winter of January 18 1996, always found herself caught in the middle. As the middle child in a bustling family of three, she learned to navigate the ebb and flow of dynamics with a grace that was as subtle as her love for art.
As she grew older, Ilka's passion for art intensified, becoming the compass that guided her life. She entered an art school where she was encouraged to explore her artistic boundaries, and she reveled in the freedom it provided. There, her imagination soared, and her work became a testament to her free spirit.
Ilka's art was a blend of abstract beauty and profound emotion, mirroring the complexity she felt as the middle child. Her creations were like whispers from her heart, a colorful tapestry of feelings and ideas that resonated with those lucky enough to witness them. She knew that art was her true calling, a way to capture the intangible and share it with the world.
Ilka cherished her bond with her older sister, Ileana, who recognized her artistic talents early on. Ileana's unwavering support and encouragement became a source of inspiration for Ilka. They spent countless hours exploring art galleries, sketching in the park, and discussing their dreams. Ileana's mentorship not only nurtured Ilka's creativity but also instilled in her qualities of empathy and resilience, which she poured into her art.
With her younger sister, Ilsa, Ilka's relationship was a delightful blend of mentorship and camaraderie. Recognizing Ilsa's budding artistic talents, Ilka took on the role of a patient teacher. Together, they embarked on creative adventures, experimenting with various mediums and sharing their artistic discoveries. Their artistic journey not only strengthened their sisterly bond but also ignited a lifelong passion for art in Ilsa, creating a special connection rooted in creativity that would continue to flourish.

Do you know where I can see the Mega Millions Drawing?
The drawings take place on the second and fourth weekdays of each month. Because of this, you may only buy tickets on Tuesdays and Fridays between 9 p.m. and midnight, the day of the film. To your luck, the outcome of the great game is completely random. The mega million lottery are meant to be the major match in this context. The mega million numbers can be requested, and the player can then select their own.
For the white ball, you must select five numbers between 1 and 70. Despite this, choose a Mega Ball number between 1 and 25. Somehow, the Mega Millions lottery has nine different winning combinations. Start spending money at $2 per mega ball. As a result, the cost of a megaplier wager is $3. As a result, the price of each mega ball is increased by the price of one megaplier.
Each game will set you back $2.
When using a 2x, 3x, 4x, or 5x multiplier.
What exactly is a Multi-Draw Ticket?
In order to purchase a ticket, one must commit to participating in at least 14 drawings. Your ticket will have more than one drawing date on it if you select more than one game to play. The system of many drawings.
That's only one example.
Choosing this option saves you money since you won't have to buy a new ticket each time you want to play again. A copy of the pay stub can be found at any store. To join the mega million, you can't be a US citizen.
Legacy of Mega Millions
The Mega Millions lottery is played only in the United States. In 1996, it was simply called "The Big Game." Following that, in 2020, it will be called the mega million. The product is available in 45 US states, the US Virgin Islands, and British Columbia. In 2002, the initial Mega Millions drawing was place. Dozens of major lotteries work together to run Mega Million. Atlantis and Georgia solely oversaw the mega-millions drawings that were broadcast nationally on television. The jackpot has increased from its prior $40,000,000 starting point. To begin with, this sum will be paid in thirty equal annual instalments.
If you were to ask about the Mega Millions, how much would you guess the greatest prize ever won was?
In the history of the Mega Millions lottery, the biggest prize ever won was $1.567 billion. Sketches from the year 2018. The winner claimed his jackpot prize in March of 2019. The ticket was purchased in South Carolina.
The Mega Millions lottery will be rebranded.
In 2002, both Ohio and New York began participating in the Super Bowl lottery. Following that, they proposed rebranding it as BIG GAME MEGA MILLION. The original "great game" is used here as a constituent, and the familiar gold ball emblem is also present. Upon joining, various states proposed rebranding the competition under different names. But when Texas did sign on, it proposed they call it "Mega Million," after the jackpot prize of that game. The game would benefit greatly from the other changes proposed by the tool, such as adding the megaplier.
How exactly do Mega Million drawings work?
WSP TV in Atlanta was the usual venue for the drawing. Until 2010, the Mega Millions was the only multi-state lottery game with nationwide drawings.
There wouldn't be any set locations for the drawing.
As of the year 2014, the process has been revised extensively. There are a number of reasons why a system with two machines is unnecessary. Both machines are now used in every Mega Millions Drawing. Smartplay International, based in Edgewater Park, New Jersey, produces the Criterion II model that is utilised for the Mega Millions Drawing.
When will the next Mega Millions drawing be held?
Each drawing will take place on the specified Tuesdays and Fridays. The drawing is most likely to occur on Tuesday, December 6th. Before 9 o'clock that night, the interested party can purchase a ticket from their preferred store. On December 7 (the next business day after the polls close), the results will be announced.
You can protect yourself from financial ruin by playing Mega Millions.
There are restricted sales locations for Mega Millions tickets. People as young as 18, a very vulnerable age, reportedly tried to buy the ticket in the hopes of causing the buyer's financial ruin. You must be at least 18 years old to purchase a lottery ticket. Though it's not necessarily a terrible thing, the fact that some of the adults are only 18 years old is being seen as proof that they've already amassed a million dollars.
This should be the era of toil. No one under the age of 18 is allowed to participate in any form of gambling. Luck is all they have going for them. A failure, financial loss, lack of better professional opportunities at the time, unanticipated bills, etc. are the most movable causes. This means it's excellent for some Americans but terrible for others. The outcome of the game depends entirely on the player's ability to correctly guess the numbers and their luck. The figures cannot be manipulated in any way.
How many more Mega Millions drawings will take place in 2022?
Since December 31 is drawing near, this year will soon come to a close. There aren't many December days left now. Consequently, there are probably just eight or nine entries left in the draw. This is the final reminder for the year, so if you're interested in playing the lottery and want to give it a shot, you can buy tickets at any of the participating merchants. Given that the outcome of this match depends entirely on chance. There is one thing I want to advise you before the year ends, and that is that you should try your luck then. We hope you have the best of luck!
Does anyone know the Mega Million Drawing's winning algorithms?
It's best to hold off on buying a ticket until the jackpot is over $143,732,416. You probably won't win anything, but if you buy millions of tickets, you might be able to win a little sum if nobody else wins the jackpot on that one lucky draw.
Why does everyone love Mega Millions so much?
It's like taking a $2 dream vacation without leaving home.
It might serve as a "thank you token."
Fun at a low cost.
People's desperation is laid bare in this.
Someone always emerges victorious, even though the odds are extremely stacked against them.
These are some of the reasons why people have chosen to purchase a Mega Millions lotto ticket.
Exactly where can I go to see the Mega Millions Drawing?
If you don't play the lottery, you have no chance of winning anything.
No one can assume victory in this contest. If you happen to come out on top in this game, it is just by chance. You can only win the game if your drawing ticket and the winning number are the same, albeit there are many possible patterns that add up to those numbers.
A ticket can be purchased.
Every Tuesday and Friday at 7:45 PM, we have a drawing. You should start by purchasing the $2 ticket from the store. There are two halves to the six-digit sum: Digits 1 through 70 represent white balls, and numbers 1 through 25 represent gold Mega Balls. You may buy lottery tickets at many different retailers, including gas stations, supermarkets, and department shops, but you'll need photo identification to do so.
Observe the figures.
The official website of the mega-millions lottery allows users to verify the winning number. Such a format is used to show the drawn numbers there.
So, how do we go about winning?
Since the only way to win the Mega Millions jackpot is to have a ticket with all of the winning numbers. All six digits are displayed using the same set of integers. This translates to five white numbers and one gold mega ball. The jackpot's prize worth fluctuates over time. Prize levels will not change.
How do I claim my prize?
The winning numbers for the Mega Millions drawing can be determined in a specific way. You have 90–120 days to verify that you can claim the full amount. Therefore, there is a process you must adhere to, since if you win, you can claim within a specific time frame.
Among your first choices should be WGN-online TV's broadcast of the Mega Millions lottery drawing. At this location, viewers can watch live broadcasts of national news programmes. If you're looking for a way to view the drawings as they happen, this is a popular suggestion.
The other option is to keep an eye on the official website of the state of Mississippi in order to verify the designs. One alternative option is to visit the state of Texas's official website.

                                    The University of Novi Grad
                                                 Fall 1996
Mornings in Novi Grad could be beautiful if you knew what to look for.
Sokovia was… different from America in many ways. From the language to the scenery, you often found yourself adrift in the strangeness of it all. There had been nothing quite as old as the buildings in the historical district of Novi Grad back home, no towering grey behemoths serving as a reminder of a bygone fight against Soviet invasion in the memories of your childhood. Still, though, there was beauty in the strangeness nonetheless.
From your tiny room in the Helena Lyudmila International Scholar’s dorm, for instance, you had a perfect view of a large campus courtyard hosting a statue of the donor by the same name. She was some royal who had invested in education a few hundred years ago, and by the looks of her metal likeness, she had been quite pretty. The sight of her shining in the early morning sun was one of the things that made uprooting your whole life seem worth it in the end, no matter how silly that seemed.
There were other small comforts that you had found beauty in during your first month attending your prestigious university, too.
You found beauty in the way the sunlight streamed over the rooftops like the opening to an Oscar-winning film. In the sound of traffic below and the overcast skies above. Sandwiches from corner stores, wildflowers growing in the median of the road, cups of the worlds best black coffee served steaming by scowling attendants at the cafe; Everywhere there was something small and kind and just familiar enough to relish in, more than able to distract you from the stress of living hand-to-mouth in a country where you didn’t even know the language. It made it all worth it.
That being said there was something else too…
Someone else to be specific.
The campus tended to run like clockwork. The same groups of students would walk past your window to their classes, the same professors would get their coffee and lunch at the little cafe across the square, and every weekday morning at 8 am on the dot, easel boy would set up his palette and canvas and paint the same bustling street.
He was talented, that you couldn’t deny. Even from the 6th floor, which was a considerable distance away, it was possible to admire the detailing and consistency with which he painted. His talent wasn’t when kept you captive at your window in the morning, though. Though you were sure his art was beautiful, he himself was a thousand times more stunning.
All dark eyes and dark hair and dark clothes, he parted crowds with his piercing gaze alone. He was always dressed like the protagonist of some awful artsy film. Massive argyle sweaters, untucked button-ups, corduroy jackets, and flare bottomed pants that must have survived his father’s wardrobe from the ’70s… his style was as close you could get to atrocious while still being impeccable as possible, and that wasn’t even getting started on the smudged black liner always present under his persistent gaze. You had never had the pleasure (or embarrassment for that matter) of meeting him in person, but you were sure that you would have had the same awed and slightly frightened reaction if you ever did. He could have been plucked entirely from the pages of some awful romance novel.
You were well and truly smitten with the idea of him.
If you looked at your morning routine through the eyes of a stranger, you’d consider yourself odd for your strange obsession with him, but you didn’t look at it like that. It wasn’t an obsession. You never overstepped your bounds. He was simply pleasing to look at and so you did. That didn’t constitute as obsessive, right?
Even if it did, you weren’t causing any harm.
Easel boy, as you had come to refer to him, was simply a tool you used to ground yourself in your new and frightening environment. Nothing more. If you ever met him, you would surely hate him from the short interactions you’d seen him have with strangers. They never ended well. He would remain an unattainable, attractive ideal in your mind until he eventually faded away into a funny memory you’d share with your kids one day.
Until then, though, you would watch him from your window before your morning classes and refused to feel guilty about it. So, that was that, no ifs, ands, or buts about it.
On the morning in question, you had woken up a little late and in a foul mood. In preparation for a test in your foundations of algebra course you had spent the better part of the night pouring over formulas while your upstairs neighbor’s bed slammed repeatedly into the wall and floor. Though you were sure they were having an excellent time, you were most definitely not. It all culminated in you missing your original alarms and despite the fact that your first class started at 10, you were exhausted, furious, and not looking forward to missing breakfast to finish the assigned reading you had put off the night before. The only thing keeping you from throwing in the towel and just giving up was the promise of seeing the painter.
So, when he arrived for the day at 8 am sharp, you were positioned at the ledge by your window, textbook in hand with a mug of instant coffee at your right. It was like a breath of fresh air.
As usual, he retrieved a small pack of cigarettes from the back of his eternally paint-stained jeans only to bring one to his lips and light it quickly. He always smoked before he worked, and just like always, he took an extra cigarette from the pack to tuck behind his ear for later. Then, he got to work setting up his easel and the small stool where he set his palette.
Pulling tubes of acrylic, brushes, and pencils from his well-worn messenger bag, easel boy flipped out the kickstand without any problem and set his thick, pre-primed canvas on the worn metal. You watched in fascination. Art had always seemed so unattainable to you. Instead, you were drawn to the more academic. The man before you, though, created beauty with an ease that had evaded you all your life, and it had you both jealous and entirely intrigued. Slowly, you reached down to take a sip of your coffee as you let your eyes drift back to your reading.
Learning about ancient Babylon was far less interesting than watching him, though.
When you next looked out the window and away from your work the handsome artist had created his base sketch already. How did he do it so fast? You assumed it was practice. He had been drawing the same 3 buildings every weekday morning for at least a month, so after a while, it must have been second nature to measure out the lines and put things into perspective. You smiled. He tended to have that effect on you.
The process was repeated until a little before 9:30. You would read a few paragraphs then look up to watch the painting progress from a sketch to a full-fledged work of art. It was good today from what you could see. The colors were a bit more muted than usual, but that was only on account of the awful, dreary overcast sky that threatened to dump rain on the city at any time. Overall, you would have considered it a masterpiece. Easel boy didn’t seem to think the same.
He regarded the painting with a sort of begrudging satisfaction that bordered on disappointment before he pulled the second cigarette from behind his ear, lit it, and began the process of packing up his materials. You finished the last of your coffee watching him do so. Smoking, well, smoking tobacco at least, had always been a vice you had avoided and yet you often wondered what it would feel like to take a drag of one of his cigarettes after it had been between his lips. Then, the magic lifted.
He folded up the flimsy easel, tucked it away with his materials back into his messenger bag, hoisted the stool under one arm and the painting under the other before taking off at a brisk clip down the street away from your window. You watched him until he was out of sight.
You were snapped from your concentration by a knock at your door.
“Y/N,” a heavily accented voice called, sending you scrambling for your bag, “If you are not outside in the next 15 seconds I will break down your door,”
Shit.
“Coming, Sasha!” You wailed. It took about 10 of those seconds to grab your backpack and shove your textbook inside, an extra 2 to check your appearance in the mirror- you looked slightly disheveled, but it was the best you were gonna do after the night you’d had. Besides, it wasn’t like you were doing anything important. You didn’t need to be dressed for a date -and you were opening the door for a quick save at the 14th second. Your door was safe for another day.
Out in the hall waited Sasha Balandin, arms crossed and grey eyes piercing in the flickering light of the terrible overhead fluorescents. As a fellow international student, you had become fast friends with Sasha. He was a little rough around the edges, and definitely didn’t take your bullshit, but he was a rare friend. “I have been waiting for 10 minutes,” he griped. You tried your best to look apologetic. “Don’t do that,”
“Do what?” You asked, closing and locking your door behind you as you began walking down the hallway.
Sasha huffed. “Do not pretend you were not too busy ogling that painter in the courtyard to hear me knocking on your door,” His Russian bluntness was on full display now as you shook your head in mock disbelief.
“I can’t believe you’d accuse me of something like that!”
“It is not an accusation if it is true,”
“There’s no way you know for a fact that I was watching him again,”
“But you were. This happens every week,”
You sighed, pausing at the top of the stairs. “I was,”
Taking the stairs in twos, Sasha sighed. “You are too soft, Y/N. Besides, you have said so often that he seems like an asshole. Why do you continue to get all mushy at him out the window if this is the case?”
“Because… well, because…” for a moment, you floundered in search of an answer that wouldn’t make you sound like a complete freak, but you found that there really wasn’t one. It came down the one small factor. “He’s just really hot, okay?”
The look Sasha gave you could have killed. He kept his mouth shut, though, choosing to let his silence shame you more than anything else did. It worked. For the entire trip down the stairs and the mile-long walk to your lecture hall, you felt the weight of shame heavy on your shoulders. Or maybe it was just your backpack. You didn’t know which you’d prefer. He did start speaking again eventually, going on about some party you had missed in favor of studying, but the feeling never left. Even as you sat down for your lecture it was still at the forefront of your mind. In fact, you were so busy thinking about your crush on easel boy and the problems with it that you barely paid attention to the professor’s rehashing of the Epic of Gilgamesh.
Your error only hit when the professor flipped the PowerPoint to the final slide.
“Before you go, I want to remind you that you have a paper on the importance of Enkidu in the Epic is due at the beginning of class this Friday. The details and requirements should be listed in your syllabus. Class dismissed,”
Fuck.
Friday was only two days away.
You were so screwed.
The problem was, you didn’t have a spare copy of the Epic of Gilgamesh just lying around your dorm room. Usually that wouldn’t have been an issue, the professor for your current history course used English for her slide because her particular history course was specifically for first-year international students. Unfortunately for you, though, you hadn’t been taking notes. Instead, you had been daydreaming about how it would feel to have easel boy blow his cigarette smoke in your face and then subsequently scolding yourself for having thoughts like that about a total stranger. In a terrible twist of fate, the professor only held office hours after her last classes on Mondays and Fridays, so even getting the information from her then was off the table. Dread began to pool in your stomach.
Any other student would have been able to cut their losses, rent a copy from the library, slog through it in a night, and write the damn essay even without the help of the classroom slides for context. The only problem was all the books in the library were in Sokovian, and you still barely knew how to order a coffee correctly. Reading the language in a full Cyrillic alphabet would just be impossible, especially for a book as stupidly old as the Epic of Gilgamesh.
In short, unless you could get your hands on a copy in the next day or so, you were absolutely, well-and-truly fucked.
Sasha was quick to find you as the hall cleared out, waiting near your seat as you packed away your notes. “That was all bullshit, no?” He asked, but the second he took in your slightly panicked expression he stopped short, pinching the bridge of his nose and breathing deeply. You knew what he was going to say before he ever said it.
“Something is wrong. You were not paying attention. Were you thinking-”
“Yes. Okay? Yes, I was thinking about him,”
He shook his head slightly. “I am concerned for you,”
“Who isn’t?”
Despite his usually stoic demeanor, that made Sasha huff out a soft laugh. “You got yourself into this mess, Y/N, you will get yourself out somehow,”
Your jaw dropped as you slung your bag over your shoulder and started making your way towards the door. “You’re not gonna help me?”
“Though I would love to be helpful, you forget that my English is poor. It will do me better to read the book in Sokovian myself than to use the information from class,”
Oh, yeah. You winced. “Sorry, Sash’”
“Nothing to be sorry for,” he shrugged as you walked out onto the lawn, chilled to the bone by the wind that whipped in every direction.
A storm was brewing. It might not fully take hold of the city for a few hours yet, but it would make the walk to your evening class absolute hell if the rain fell as hard as it had several weeks prior. You could only hope that it wouldn’t start until after you had walked home. Your odds were looking slim, though, based on the way you could already hear thunder clapping in the distance. After a moment you hit the edge of the sidewalk where your paths would diverge.
“Good luck with the paper,” you offered weakly.
Sasha replied with a sharp, “Good luck with your crush,” and then he was off in the opposite direction without another word. Sasha was blunt like that, never overstaying his welcome or lingering when he didn’t need to. There was something enviable about it. What you wouldn’t give to be able to simply say things as they were without an unnecessary sugar coating to save face and spare feelings. It lingered on your mind for the whole half-mile walk to the campus bookstore. Speaking of which...
There was only one place where you might possibly find an English copy of the Epic of Gilgamesh. It wasn’t the big student bookstore, most of the textbooks there had been in Sokovian, Russian, or German and you hadn’t even tried to set foot in their actual book section. No, your only hope was the tiny hole-in-the-wall bookstore you had stumbled upon during move-in. It was only about half a mile away from your dorm from any of your lecture halls, so you often found yourself wandering inside when you had time to kill. They were one of the only stores you’d come across that sold anything in English, magazines included, so despite the fact that the young cashiers rarely spoke your language you often found that the back shelves of that tiny shop kept you from going mad.
Now, they might also be keeping you from ruining your GPA.
You could only hope. If anybody could save you, it was them.
Ducking in through the small doorway, you were greeted by the soft ring of the bell above your head. The attendant at the register simply regarded you with a polite nod. You had seen her there before and she knew you barely spoke a lick of Sokovian, so she didn’t attempt a pleasantry. Instead, she simply let you wander through the entrance and into the towering bookshelves, passing a few other faceless shoppers on your way towards the back. You were grateful for her nonchalance.
If there was anything worse than feeling foolish for not knowing Sokovian, it was being talked down to in perfect English by a Sokovian citizen. Most interactions left you wishing you’d actually taken anything away from your high school French class other than emotional trauma from your teacher and a caffeine addiction. Damn America and its terrible public-school language programs…
The path to the English classics section was one you’d walked many times since discovering the book store. It was right in the very back corner of the shop, tucked away where the city natives wouldn’t have to address or see it. You had snagged a copy of Pride and Prejudice a few weeks back, so you knew exactly where to search. The only problem was slogging through every single book on the shelf in search of the one you were looking for.
Your eyes scanned the wall.
Gilgamesh, Gilgamesh, Gilgamesh…
Gilgamesh!
On the 6th shelf up sat one small copy. Score! You were saved! As you reached up to grab it, though, you were met with yet another roadblock. The shelf it was on was juuuust a little too high for you to reach. Oh, come on…
You hopped a little, extending your hand up as far as it could go, but your fingers just barely brushed the spine. Somewhere behind you, you could hear footsteps. Then someone coughed to suppress laughter. The shame was plain on your face. As your flannel rode up and you stretched up in one last desperate attempt to grab the book when suddenly someone, you assumed the same person who had been laughing at your misfortune, spoke.
“They have stools, you know,” he said, accented voice thick with amusement. The English surprised you, but you assumed they used it for your benefit. You were in front of the English language books after all. Besides, the shame of it all kept your mind from questioning it too much. “For reaching the top shelf,”
Of course they had stools.
If your face hadn’t already been burning with embarrassment it definitely was now.
In a split-second decision, you decided playing dumb was the only way you could walk out of the situation with any dignity left at all, so you plastered on a confused smile and spun around to greet the stranger. “Really? I had no cl-”
You stopped short.
Oh.
Oh no.
You’d know those paint-stained jeans anywhere.
There, with his hands in his pockets and the most self-important, thin-lipped smirk you had ever seen, was easel boy in all of his cocky, intimidating, hot glory. Had you really noticed how hot he truly was before? It didn’t feel like it. Not now that you’d really seen him close up and reveled in the way his dark eyes hypnotized you with their smudged liner that felt borderline obscene. You could smell him too, all charcoal and turpentine and cigarette smoke. If you had it bad before when he was just a blurry ideal out your window, you were completely and utterly smitten now.
He regarded you with a sort of practiced annoyance, and yet there was a strange softness to it that you hadn’t found in many native Sokovians, especially ones that saw you as the stupid, bumbling American wandering blindly around their country.
“Would you like my help?”
“Huh?” You were so lost in his eyes that you couldn’t even focus on his question.
“To reach your book. Would you like my help?”
“Oh!” With a brisk nod, you stepped away from the shelf to make room for easel boy, “yeah, I’m just trying to grab that one there. The, uh, Epic of Gilgamesh,”
In one swift movement, he was stepping right beside you to easily reach up and grab the offending piece of literature. The closeness of it all nearly sent you into a tailspin. That wasn’t even mentioning the way your heart thudded just a little faster when he finally handed the book to you, his calloused fingers brushing against your own. You barely find a grip on your brain strong enough to thank him through the fog of embarrassment and attraction. Eventually, though, you managed to choke out a placation as your eyes explored the cover of the book.
“Thanks for that,”
“It was no problem,” he shrugged. He didn’t move though, still standing just inches away from you. When you looked up from the book you found his eyes were still on you, watching intently as if he expected something from you. The answer to what he actually expected was a mystery but you could tell he wanted something. When you didn’t speak, he spoke for you. “So, The Epic of Gilgamesh? That’s definitely a bold choice,”
You looked up at him sheepishly through heavily lidded eyes. “It’s not a choice at all, actually. I’m only buying it so I can write an essay,”
“Ah,” Something about his tone was almost disappointed as the conversation stalled.
You quickly changed the subject to the first thing you could think of.
“Your hair is really nice!”
“My hair?”
“Yeah… your hair,”
Smooth move, dumbass.
Easel boy’s expression seemed to soften once more as his signature grin crept back onto his face. “Thank you, I grew it myself,” Between his accent and the way he was looking at you like he was going to eat you alive, you weren’t exactly sure how you hadn’t had a heart attack yet. Still, the attention was nice, even if it was bourne out of you repeatedly embarrassing yourself in a never-ending cycle of fuckups. He ran a hand through his loose brown hair. “I like your shirt. Very American,”
Silently, you cursed yourself for not taking a few extra seconds to pick out a better outfit when you woke up. Standing next to him, even while he was dressed in his paint-stained jeans and undone button-up, you looked like a wreck in comparison. He didn’t seem to be speaking from a place of judgment, though.
If you didn’t know better, you’d think he was being nice, but that couldn’t be the case… could it?
“Maybe it’s just that I haven’t met very many Sokovians that are fond of America, but I’m not sure if that was meant to be a compliment or an insult,” You joked. It was a bit sarcastic, the lilt of your voice masking your deep insecurity, and to your surprise easel boy laughed. He really laughed. From your place beside him, you could almost feel the warmth radiating off of him as he shook his head.
“It was definitely a compliment,”
Oh.
Your heart skipped a beat.
That was a new revelation.
You steeled yourself with a deep breath. Fuck it. It was now or never.
“I, uh… I’m Y/N, and you are?”
He regarded you once again with that strange expression of expectation. “What?”
“I asked for your name,” you repeated, and yet he still stood, slightly dumbfounded, staring down at you with that same expectant expression from earlier. For a moment, you almost thought he expected you to know it already. That fact was quickly glossed over when he moved to rub the back of his neck with his hand, eyes drifting down to the floor.
“Sorry,” he chuckled, “I’m not very good with people. My father thought college might help me finally connect with my peers, but I don’t think he expected that I was the problem, nor do I think he expected me to pick a degree in the arts,” Suddenly, he paused and stuck out his hand to you. “I’m Hel. It’s very nice to meet you Y/N,”
With only a moment of hesitation- because wow, your name had never sounded more right on someone’s lips -you took his large calloused hand in your own and shook it gently. His palm was warm, his fingers lingering on your own for just a moment even as he pulled away. It wasn’t much, just a soft brush against your flesh, but it sent a flash of heat and liquid confidence through your chest.
“Is that short for something?” Your eyes met his in the soft yellow glow of the overhead lamps. Seeing him like this, so up close and personal, he looked a lot more human than he had from your window. Sure, he was imposing. Underneath the initial harsh facade, though, was something softer and almost poetic. You weren’t an artist by any means but if you had been, you had no doubt that he’d be your muse.
“It’s short for Helmut, but only my father calls me that, and only when he’s cross, which, unfortunately, is most of the time,” he chuckled, “Besides, it’s an old man’s name. It doesn’t suit me,”
The words left your mouth before you knew what you were saying.
“Well, it’s better than calling you easel boy,”
Shit.
Today really just wasn’t your day, huh?
In the split second where you were mourning your chances with the most stupidly handsome guy who had ever shown any interest in you, you almost missed the way Helmut’s eyes lit up at the admission.
“Easel boy?” His voice was teasing, but not demeaning. That didn’t do much to ease your mortification, though.
“Is there any chance that I can get you to forget I said anything?”
“If you already have a nickname for me when we’ve barely met, I think you already know the answer to that question,”
His knowing smirk was enough to get you pleading. “You can’t just let me off the hook this once?” you begged, scrubbing a hand across your forehead in a desperate attempt to get away from his piercing gaze. The things those brown eyes did to you could be classified as obscene… “I will genuinely do anything if you don’t make me explain myself right now Hel,”
Hel quirked up an eyebrow. “Anything?” The way your stomach turned at just one word from him was both terrifying and extremely exciting. It felt like a promise. Without hesitation, you nodded. That made him smile. “In that case, get coffee with me today?”
Once again, you were rendered speechless.
“My treat,” he added, “unless you’re not interested…”
“No!” Your answer left your lips embarrassingly fast, “Or- yes? No, no, I think I meant no. No; I am very interested. Yes; I would like to get coffee with you,” There was a hint of shame in your words, but only a hint. After the day you’d had already, there wasn’t very much there to be ashamed of. Still, that same pit of dread began to open up in your stomach as you mulled over your choices.
Thankfully, Helmut continued to take it all in stride. “Wonderful! Is there anything else you’d like to do here before we go? It’s best we leave soon if we want to beat the rain,” He offered up his arm as he spoke like some sort of Disney prince. It was, by far, the cutest gesture you had ever been lucky enough to receive.
You linked your arm with his without hesitation. “As soon as I pay we can get going,” He was warm. It radiated off him in waves just like the warm hints of tobacco and wintermint that seemed to seep from his skin and clothes. With that, you made your way to the front desk as Hel shot you a sly smile.
“Who said anything about letting you pay?”
True to his word, he didn’t let you pay for a single thing for the rest of the afternoon.
The two of you made your way up to the cashier together, and Helmut only separated from your side to grab his wallet before you could grab yours. He then spoke in rapid-fire Sokovian to the lady at the register and pulled what could only be described as a wad of Sokovian koronas while you set the book on the counter, and from the looks of it, she seemed more than pleased with the two of you. Who wouldn’t be, especially when Hel seemed to insist that she keep the excess? In the end, after the book had been wrapped nicely in a paper bag and deposited in your backpack, Helmut held the door open for you like some sort of gentleman and followed you out into the grey afternoon.
Then, you were off down the street on Hel’s arm, pushing through the wind and the biting chill that had settled in the air.
“So, you don’t sound like a big fan of your dad,” you asked, half laughing as you attempted to broach conversation once again.
Helmut groaned beside you. “My father is a menace who is unable to understand that some people want more in life than to sit behind a desk all day making phone calls. In fact, most of my family is the same way. The only reason I haven’t completely cut them off and changed my name is the money,”
“I assume you get a lot of it if it’s worth sticking around someone you hate so much,”
“Never ask a man about his net worth,” he chuckled, gently elbowing you in the ribs, “but yes, I’m very comfortable. I have my own apartment just far enough away to be considered off-campus with my own car and as much money as it takes to keep me happy and getting good grades; Daddy makes sure of that,” The word daddy was a deep sneer, barely there in the wind, but something about it sent butterflies through your stomach. Well, that was never something you thought you were into… “Little does he know, I’m not here to make money. I’m here to find inspiration worth my time while out from under his thumb,”
You snorted softly. “Artistic and rich? You’re just ticking all the boxes, Hel,”
“Good for me. Would offering help on that essay of yours endear you to me further?”
“Absolutely,”
The next 5 minutes you spend discussing the Epic of Gilgamesh. Surprisingly, in one of the first stokes of good luck you’d had all day, Helmut seemed to be one of the only people on earth who knew plenty about Enkidu off the top of his head. When he was the one lecturing you in his smooth, heavily accented timbre it was so much easier to pay attention to something so very tedious than when you heard it from your aging and often monotone professor. In fact, you were so enthralled by his retelling of the tale that you barely noticed you’d made it all the way to the cafe that sat across from the international dorm.
If you didn’t consider Hel to be smart as a whip and twice as clever as he was smart, you would have thought it was a coincidence. It couldn’t be though. No, there was no way anything was a coincidence with Helmut around. You shot him a smile when he opened the door for you and ushered you inside.
“You know Hel,” you muttered, “I’m starting to think you might know more about me than you initially let on,”
He shrugged. “You’re American, so it’s unlikely you live anywhere else and I wanted to make the walk home easy. It’s supposed to rain, you know? Besides, despite the… interesting waitstaff, they make the best pastries in town right here in this cafe,”
“Did you mean it when you said you were paying?”
“Absolutely,”
“Then I can’t wait to try one,”
The two of you were seated quickly (you assumed it had to do with the waitress finding Hel as hot as you did, because you caught her looking at him from behind the counter and whispering excitedly in Sokovian to her coworker at least twice over the course of the meal) and the conversation flowed easily as you waited on your coffees and the deserts Helmut insisted on splitting to let you try. Millefeuille, pear tart tatin, chocolate devil’s food cake, and a towering plate of apricot kołaczki awaited you, and they kept you sitting and talking and snacking for over an hour as you really got to know each other. The more you learned, the more you fell in love with the man across from you.
Over the course of the afternoon, you learned that Helmut was majoring in studio art while minoring in psychology just because it interested him, he hated the Beatles almost as much as he hated Freud’s theories on women, his favorite color was purple, and he spent most of his free time reading or getting high off his ass in his massive studio apartment in what you now knew was one of the most expensive areas in the city. He, in return, sat at rapt attention across the table as you gushed about your life in America, your reasons for going to university in Sokovia, your favorite books, and the ridiculousness that was trying to pass college-level classes in a country that seemed to avoid English at all costs.
Eventually, though, you did touch upon his nickname.
“I just thought it was really interesting that you did the same thing every single day, no matter what,” you explained, grabbing one of the last kołaczki from the plate and ignoring the powdered sugar that stuck to your fingers, “and by watching you… I don’t know, I guess it kind of felt like I had another friend who’d share breakfast with me in the morning if that makes sense,”
Hel nodded, swallowing his last bite of chocolate cake. “I understand completely. It can be lonely, coming to a new place without any friends or connections, but you were brave enough to take the leap. I admire that,” He brought his napkin to his lips before crumpling it and setting it one of the now empty plates before him, “But I can’t say I’m not a little disappointed that you didn’t watch me because I’m attractive,”
You nearly choked on your pastry. “Well, I wouldn’t say your pretty face didn’t help…”
The grin that spread across his face was heartstopping. He grabbed a napkin from the little holder next to the two of you and grabbed a pen from one of his pockets as he spoke. “In that case, you should join me tomorrow morning. Bring coffee if you can, I never have enough hands to bring a cup for myself, but even if you can’t bring some, if you want to come and watch me work I’d be more than happy to have a companion for the morning,” he paused for a moment, flustered, “or every morning, for that matter,”
“That sounds like a deal,” Your cheeks were hot, but not from embarrassment this time. No, it was anything but, because here you were across the table from a kind, attractive, intelligent Sokovian boy with money to spend and time to spare for you. You couldn’t help but feel a little bit proud too. He wanted you back, after all. You could see it in the way his eyes lingered on you just a little longer than he should, and even more plainly in the way he wrote his phone number in bold blue ink on the napkin and signed it with a doodle of a heart before passing it across the table to you.
“I’m going to go pay,” he said quietly while standing, “but I’ll be back in a second to walk you out. Alright?”
“Alright,”
There was something strangely similar to sorrow sitting in your chest when you watched him walk away. The sight of his ass as he went made up for it, though. Once he was obstructed by other patrons, you turned your attention to the napkin in your hands. Hel’s handwriting was neat as far as artists’ handwriting goes, but it still held a sort of looseness in its curves, a freedom in the way the numbers had flowed effortlessly from his pen. You popped the last kołaczki in your mouth as you admired the blue ink before devouring the final bites of pear tart and millefeuille. How had you gotten so lucky to have someone like him giving you his number and buying you pastries? You pondered the bizarre nature of it all until Helmut returned.
You stood quickly, folding the napkin and putting it away in your pocket. “Ready to go?”
“If you are,” he replied. In an instant, you were standing beside him again as he opened the door for you. The wind was even stronger now, strong enough that his loose hair whipped wildly around his forehead from the force of it. You couldn’t help but giggle at his appearance.
He caught you off guard as he walked you across the street. “You have such a pretty laugh,”
It was like you were seeing him again for the first time. You fiddled with the strap of your backpack as you got closer and closer to the door to your dorm. “Thanks. I’m pretty fond of your laugh too,”
Then, you were there, just two college kids standing awkwardly before your first departure.
“So,” you said before you could stop yourself, “when I tell my one friend all about this afternoon after my math class tonight, should I say it was a date?”
Hel’s cheeks flushed pink. “You can call it that, if that’s what you would like it to have been,”
“I think I would,”
“Good, good,” he let out a little chuckle, “I’m glad. Would you… would you consider going on another? I promise I have much more to offer than just small talk and tips on where to buy the best pastries,”
Looking into his brown eyes, so full of uncertainty and hope, you knew you couldn’t have denied him even if you wanted to. Still, you weren’t going to give in to his advances without a little bit of taunting. It made it fun, a game to be played where, hopefully, you both would win big in the end.
“That depends,” you teased, letting your lower lip catch between your teeth, “what do you have in mind?”
Helmut shoved his hands into his pockets as he rocked back and forth on his heels, pensive. “If you want to, we could go to my place and I could actually show you all of the paintings I’ve been working on while you watched me. The view from the rooftop is lovely too. We could have dinner up there while looking out over Novi Grad. I have to warn you, though, it’ll probably be takeout. I’m an atrocious chef,”
Slowly, a brilliant smile spread across your face. “Does Friday work?”
The smile Helmut shot back was as bright as every star in the night sky and even more enthralling. “Friday is perfect. Can I pick you up at 7?”
“As long as you come in that fancy car you were talking about,”
“Then it’s a deal,”
“Well,” you turned away, walking up the steps towards the door before turning back to him, “I’ll see you tomorrow morning, Hel, and I’ll bring coffee. Have a good night,”
“You too, Y/N. Parting is such sweet sorrow and all that,”
With that, he gave one last short wave before turning on his heel and pulling out a cigarette from the pack in his pocket. You watched him walk away until he turned the corner and disappeared from view. Only then did you enter the punch code and race up the stairs to your room.
Your back was pressed to the door of your dorm room the second you had shut it, your hands clutching at your chest in a desperate attempt to keep your heart from beating right out of your ribs. The second you were in the privacy of your own place, your cool facade had melted away to reveal just how much of a wreck you really were.
He had invited you over to his apartment.
He liked you.
Easel boy really, honestly liked you.
No, not easel boy. Helmut. Hel.
Hel liked you, and he invited you over to his apartment, and you had plans to meet him with coffee as he painted the next morning.
You smiled softly under the fluorescent lights and pulled the book that had brought you together from your backpack. It seemed so unassuming now, just a fresh paperback with an unbroken spine, but in reality, it was so much more than that.
Hel.
It was such a nice name. You liked it a lot.
Now you couldn’t wait to see what else you liked about him too.

Who changed Lola Bunny?
Malcolm D. Lee explained, “This is 2021. It’s important to reflect the authenticity of strong, capable female characters. … So we reworked a lot of things, not only her look, like making sure she had an appropriate length on her shorts and was feminine without being objectified, but gave her a real voice. For us, it was, ‘Let’s ground her athletic prowess, her leadership skills, and make her as full a character as the others.'”
(See the complete interview here: X)
So, gone are her curves, thigh-high drawstring shorts and midriff-baring crop top. Instead, Lola Bunny now takes on a sportier look wearing a more standard basketball vest and leggings under her track shorts.
But, let's see more deeply what determinated this choice:
1. Being mad at a fan art is sad, people.
Before, a sad 50 yo guy starts complaing about how "cancel culture" or "politically correct" ruined his life - Really? Changing a cartoon bunny from a movie you didn't see for a decade ruined your life? Wow. Someone should really review the list of their priorities -, let's see how really Lola looked in the 1996 original Space Jam.
Tumblr media
Here we have original Lola Bunny:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Here you can see all Lola's scenes in Space Jam: X)
Yes, Lola walked in a sexy way that show off her curves, or at least she seemed to have curves (a little breast, tight waist, long legs, bootie), but those are not big as in the fan art you are seeing around, and Lola's curves are not evidenced during the match or when she played. Is more her attitude and posture that made her look sexy. However, althought her curves clearly changes every time she is doing something different, from action to action, there are some scenes in which she is purposely made sexy, with saxophone music as soundtrack and male-gaze sections that ends in the same way, Lola surrounded by a bunch of horny and howling cartoon guys.
That's appropriate with Jessica Rabbit: she is purposely made and designed as a parody of the femme fatale from old hard boiler movies, in which attractive, mysterious women were portrayed as evil and manipulative gals who hide criminal intentions. Jessica, with her intentionally exaggerated body, subverted the misogyny of 40s and 30s detective movies: she is kind-hearted, truly loves her naive and goofy husband Roger and uses her powers (beauty and cunning) to protect him. Her body too is used for comic sketches, while this not happens for Lola, that's just a serious and indipendent basketball player. So, the male obsession for her body is out of place, expecially because she reacted with anger at being misconsidered only for being an attractive female bunny. “Don't call me doll” is her catch phrase. So, it seems strange she didn't react at all at the very sexualized presentation at the final basketball match: Lola simply shows her basketball skills, ignoring or accepting passively the reaction of the honey crowd of wolves around her. (Please, notice the association: Lola “admirers” are wolves, predators, while Lola, their object of desire, is a rabbit, a prey)
This is the cartoon version of cat calling: they are like a group of men who sit on their porches and whistle at girls everyday when they walk in from of them. A normal girl or woman would pass over this thing, even if they are bothered, unconfortable or embarassed, because they are more scared by a possible violent reaction of this whistling horny guys at their legitimate anger objections. But here, we are talking of Lola, a strong Looney Tunes bunny, and she could smash that damn basket ball on wolves' face, breaking all their teeth. That would be very a Looney reaction. But Lola doesn't react at all at this situation. Here, on my opinion, screenplayers missed an opportunity, but probably they thought to have already did too much with Lola's personality and “girl power”.
Remember also that Lola is the only young cartoon female character we see in the whole movie. So we can't do a proper comparison with other female relevant characters' rapresentation. (See here for a deeper analysis of Lola's origin and development: X)
Tumblr media
However, compared with Bugs, Lola looks more fit, more humanized than Bugs. Lola has clearly a definited breast and booty, but it looks like is more her posture that makes them relevant. Lola has clearly shoulders back to show the rack. Bugs is anthropomorphic but remains an animal, has no shoulders or pectorals more like a human and looks a bit over-weight (fat belly). And his posture don't keep that stomach in, chin up, and march forward.
Tumblr media
Lola, on the other hand, has a more human structure. That's why I say she has curves. An example are Mickey and Minnie who are two beans in the same way it is not that Mickey is a bean and Minnie has small tits, they are structurally alike.
Lola's body remembers highly No-Ribs-Jasmine from Aladdin (see the gif for reference). That unrealistic Barbie-like waist that was so popular in the 90s and 80s. (See here for references: X and X)
Tumblr media
Now, we are changed a lot from the past 24 years. Barbies didn't have that impossible, unrealistic waist-line anymore, Disney princess concept has changed (see Merida and Moana).
Lola concept is changed in 2012: her design for the new cartoons is totally different and her personality too. She wear a blue or violet dress, almost flat-chested and she was made annoying and silly, just to make a contrast with Bugs smarter. Just like Daffy Duck is dumb as hell and his new girlfriend, Tina Russo (no more dear old Melissa Duck), is way smarter than him. Tina is tough, street-smart, rebellious and feisty. But we will see this thing in the next point.
2. People on the upper floors hated Lola personality.
Lola Bunny had only few lines in Space Jam, but she definitely passed the first impression that she was draw only for make male characters fall in love. Lola was a good basketball player and show it off, in front of a skeptical and then astonish bunch of cartoon guys and also Michael Jordan. She also had a strong personality and said it clear to Bugs she didn't like being called "doll". Lola was beauty and curvy, but not a cheerleader. Lola was a basketball player. Remember this part, because we will talk about basketball in the next point.
If at the box office Space Jam was a success, at Warner Bros there were those who turn up their noses, and they are important people, from the upper floors, who accused the film with Michael Jordan of having completely distorted the philosophy of the Looney Tunes. They blamed Lola Bunny more than everything else. Producers of Warner Bros said she was too perfect for the moody group of Warner cartoons: she was too sensual, provocative and independent, totally alien to that core of crazy characters that act as an exaggeration of the vices of 'man.
And fans hated her too. Chuck Jones, creator of the Merrie Melodies said: "Lola Bunny is a character with no future, she’s a totally worthless character with no personality."
So, Lola Bunny was deleted. Lola would make only some brief apparitions in some comics edited by DC Comics, in Baby Looney Tunes, in which she was a toddler with a very similar personality and resemblance to Space Jam adult version, and also as playable character in some unsuccessful videogames.
Years passed and projects for a sequel of Space Jam never become reality, so in 2003 Warner Bros relased Looney Tunes Back in Action. But Lola wasn't here, because the movie purposely want to make a deep cut with what we saw in Space Jam, according to what said it's director Joe Dante. This movie was a totally failure, but it gave back to Looney Tunes their craziness.
Years passed again, but this time is 2011, 10th of May on Cartoon Network was relased the second episode of The Looney Tunes Show. The series aimed to strongly relaunch the Looney Tunes, long gone from the glories of the past, updating the stories of Bugs Bunny and associates in a sitcom key, with the rabbit sharing a house with Daffy Duck in a suburb of Los Angeles. All interspersed with sketches by Wile E. Coyote and Road Runner done in CGI and the updated return of the Merrie Melodies. But the big news of the second episode is that LOLA BUNNY RETURNED.
And Lola was a character with some relevance within the series, even if something didn't seem right with her. Lola looked different, she was no longer the rabbit version of the femme fatale seen in Space Jam: she was naive, talkative, with her head in the clouds, crazy to the point of becoming Bugs Bunny's stalker. Bugs after having fallen in love with her at first glance understands on the first date that he absolutely can't stand Lola. She is no longer the Lola we used to know, even if the appearance is similar and the name is the same. Lola is effectively a Looney Tunes now. And the fans like her, the public like her, Warner Bros like her.
(See Lola in The Looney Tunes Show here: X)
But this is a big walk in behind from the indipent character we used to know in Space Jam. Lola was turned into the stereotype of the crazy girlfriend for a while. And this is not a surprise, if we remember that in 2012 were popular the "overly attached girlfriend" meme template. (See here for references: X)
However, in The Looney Toons Show Lola has some very funny moments, while in Space Jam she was more serious and a little out of space among the other characters. (See here for references: X)
3. What women wear when they play basketball?
Women's National Basketball Association was only created in 1996. So, women's basketball were not considered - and still is not considered - as important as men's basketball at the time Space Jam was filmed.
In Space Jam 2 there will be WNBA players with a significant role, for example Diana Taurasi and Nneka Ogwumike.
Professional female athletes aren't that curvy because curves are determined by body fat and they have a little.
As a busty volleyball player, I can say, dear people, breats could be very annoying during sport activities: it could be a pain, when you run or jump. That's because a lot of women wear sport bra to compress and support their breast. Sports bra may also include layered cups or a high neck to keep everything in place and protect from painful hits, so women can be safe and comfortable during workouts.
Female basketball players didn't wear crop-tops and tight shorts to play. They wear exactly what Lola wears in the picture above: long sleeveless tees, large shorts and maybe protective gears such as knee pads, sleeves or braces to reduce chronic pain caused by the immense burden put on the knees in basketball, to prevent bruises caused by collisions and hard fall and to provide support after a significant knee injury like an ACL tear. They could wear also compressive arms sleeves to help muscles that are sore or overworked to recover faster. The sleeve enables your blood flow to circulate quicker to the heart, which helps you heal and recover quicker.
Wow. WNBA wears Exactly what wear NBA players. So surprising.
Tumblr media
4. This is only a promotional character sketch, not what Lola would look in the movie.
Space Jam 2 would be developed in CGI and there are a little preview frames going around, included one showing Lola jumping and you can see her breast shape. But she totally looks like a comic cartoon character. It's not humanized. It's not designed to be the sexy love interest. She doesn't look out of space among the others anymore, expecially because seems that there would be also Tweety's Granny and Melissa Duck or Tina Russo as players too.
Tumblr media
5. Reality.
Really? You want a human anthropomorphic rabbit? Well, Lola as a rabbit would have something like six nipples, but no human-like breast. And, also, real life girls have ribs. No one in real life is that thin. Oh, well, if you don't considered Pixee Fox, a model who had surgically removed six ribs and wears daily a compressive bust corset (yes, like the one that made Elizabeth Swan faint in the first movie of Pirate of the Caribbean) to look like a cartoon fairy (Tinkerbell, you are the one to blame for this).
(See here for references: X)
In conclusion, we can say that all this controversy is based only on a porny fan art and that Lola “new” graphic isn't change too much from the original Space Jam movie. It's just a little more cartoonish.
We can also firmly remeber that Space Jam 2 is going to be developed for children, to relunch Looney Tunes among new generations of children, who are the largest buyers of merchandising (including Happy Meals surprises) and consumers of new cartoons that surely would be developed, if Space Jam 2 would be a success.
However, we should admit that those kids probably know better the 2011 version of Lola than her original version and that 2011 version was more appreciated by fans and producers. Lola's voice actress, Kristen Wiin won BTVA People's Choice Voice Acting Award in 2012 and was nominated for that prize also about three times in the following years. Also Rachel Ramras, Lola's voice actor was nominated for BTVA People's Choice Voice Acting Award in 2016 for her role in Looney Tunes: Rabbit Run.
We don't know anything about Lola's personality in Space Jam 2, so we can't do a proper comparison or a prevision, but, according to what Malcolm D. Lee said, we can assume that original personality of Lola would be preserved.
The controversy is relevant only for Lola's body and not for her personality, and that's is highly rappresentative of what impressed more this bunch of grow-up kids. They grow up to be like the horny wolves and they are howling because their prey is not available anymore.
And, to be honest, being so obsessed with the breast and the body of a cartoon character (that is clearly made up for kids) it's not sane at all. Sorry to say that, but sometimes people need to drink from a bottle of truth.

Answering 14 Asks. Ranging from advice, to my characters, to the rules for drawing fanart. (I’m allowing it now btw)
Tumblr media
..You know? Since the last time this has ben mentioned I started thinking.
I would love to see fan art of my characters, and now I know you guys want to draw them. Originally I didn’t want anyone to draw my OCs for my own safety. This post goes into detail on that. But I’ve been thinking.. and I think I might’ve found a way to let people draw fan art of my ocs without exposing anything. With rules. If what you plan to draw “breaks the rules” that means that its one of those “exposing things” I talked about.
Man I am such a sissy. I just don’t want to be bashed for anything. But okay look, here are the “rules” for my fan art.
You absolutely are allowed to draw my characters in one of these categories.
Draw a character that you like posing or smiling to show them off.
Cool action scenes! Most of them are soldiers after all.
Interacting with some of the real team prime members is 100% okay. Especially Volvo and Ratchet because they're supposed to be friends.
Drawing Brown Suburban and Bash Buggy hanging out with the other Wreckers!
Drawing two or more established friends goofing around and having innocent fun.
Drawing a character with an established sad backstory being sad or crying it out. With or without someone that has been established as their friend.
Redrawing scenes that I have already drawn to see it in your style.
If I have mentioned a character likes something, you could draw them with it. An example would be Ranger looking out over a river because she loves water.
You’re allowed to draw me with the characters, although I am kiiiinda a fourth wall break? I’m not really supposed to exist in their world.. So, if you really wanna, you can draw me, but I wouldn't encourage it.
Ones I would not be okay with though..
Drawing my characters getting drunk/drinking. <:/ Not on board with that..
Drawing any of my characters, wearing, talking about or supporting anything political or controversial.. Whether it be over the top or subtle.
No uh.. no ships please, Red Van and Suburban are okay but nothing overly sexual please. :}
No fourth wall breaks please. I know I have had my slip ups but I would like to keep a wall up in between their world and ours. I.E no drawing yourself with them..
Well uh.. that’s about it I suppose. You can basically draw anything, Just no ships, nothing overly sexual or political and keep the fourth wall breaks to a minimum. I myself need to work on not breaking the fourth wall.
I guess that’s it. So if you want to draw fanart for me, and it “follows the rules”? I am bouncing off the walls excited to see what you make for me! Link to their character sheets is here, keep in mind it may be edited now and then.
I am officially giving my fans permission to draw my OCs as long as it “follows the rules”, Have fun drawing!!
Tumblr media
Escort would be like,
Tumblr media Tumblr media
When it comes to digital, I use a small Intuos pro Wacom tablet. The model is PHT-451. I’m just reading things off the back of it here. It looks like this.
Tumblr media
When it comes to traditional drawing, I use nothing but the finest Walmart mechanical pencils and sketch books. I also usually have a standard pink school eraser on hand as well. :}
Tumblr media
Hmm.. If they could use a bouncy castle.. Well,
Brown Suburban and Suburban wouldn’t use it for the same reasons. They’re both too big and it would just make them tired. However, if the the kiddos wanted him to, Suburban would just shrug and hop on.
Miata would be on it before its even fully blown up. She’d love bounce houses.
Escort wouldn’t use it because he’s old and weak. Trying to jump up and down like that would tire him out super fast and would just make him ache probably. Poor baby, he’d probably want to though.🥺
U.M.Dragster would be hopping on it before it was fully blown up along side Miata.
A.T.Dragster would like it but would pretend not to.
Green Truck and Vega wouldn’t do it because they’re old and that would really tire them out. But Vega would want to even though he really shouldn’t.
Red Van would like to jump with the kids, but she cant. After what those cons did to her knees.. she can barley walk, let alone jump. repeatedly.
White Truck would love to jump on a bounce house and would have a ton of fun with it. Although due to his size and strength he would probably get tired faster than Miata and U.M. would.
Beluga and Jeepy would love to, and they would. But just like White Truck, they’re big and would get tired pretty quickly I feel.
With enough coaxing, Honda would like to jump on the bounce house too. And she would have a decent amount of energy left over.
Ranger would say she doesn’t want to and wouldn’t go on it. But she lowkey actually wants to join, she just doesn’t want to seem silly.
Volvo: No.
Bash Buggy would probably want to, but would shy away. He cant see people all that well and parts tend to fall off of him. He imagines he’s not all that clean either so he wouldn’t want to get the bounce house dirty and covered in bolts and screws.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A Decepticon.. that one ugly one.? And I know which one??
I actually don’t know which one. I know its not one of mine, because I’ve never drawn them before.
I know its not Knock Out, because he was designed to look attractive. Its not Break Down because he’s not ugly and he’s..... uh, dead..... Its not Soundwave because you cant see his face. Its not Shockwave because.. well, I don't think he’s ugly. Is it Megatron? Starscream?
Who are you talking about???
Tumblr media
Its weird how Bash is the idiot when Bulkhead was the one who asked, “Were you killed??” and ALL FOUR OF THEM were relieved when he said he lived.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Isaac sounds so cool! I really like how you structured his character, he sounds like a really fun guy, and yeah, I bet they would really get along swell XD
Tumblr media
Well here’s the thing, I can only really tell you the age of the real cars and how old I imagined them being in Transformer years. The reason why is because I don't know how long Cybertronians live and cant use any of the other characters as a reference.
Bumblebee is seen as the youngest, and Ratchet I think is seen as the oldest. Like Teenager vs elder kind'a thing. If I knew how old they were, I could compare them to my OCs and give you a proper age.. but I cant find any info, so this’ll just have to do for now. <:{
Now, normally I have a rule of thumb that I follow. The characters Cybertronian age should at least match up a little with their car age. 40 years is really old for a car, so the character should be really old in robot years. 40 years would translate to like 50 or 60 in Cybertronian years if you get what I’m saying. So, Here’s the age of the real life cars and how old I imagined them to be in Cybertronian years. From oldest to youngest.
Green Truck was made in 1972, he is 48 years old. I pictured him being in his late 50s, coming on 60 years old in Cybertronian years.
Vega was made in 1974, he is 46 years old. I pictured him being in his mid 50s somewhere, in Cybertronian years of course.
Brown Suburban was made in 1978, he is 42 years old. Despite him not being that old in real life, I thought of him being ancient in Cybertronian years. Like, he’s closing up on 90 or something and yet he’s still super strong and in fighting condition. The idea was that Bulkhead and Wheeljack were surprised to see him on Earth, they both kind’a though he had died of age by then.
Escort was made in 1986, he is 34 years old. Not too old, but I portray him as if he’s reaching his 50s in Cybertronian years.
Suburban was made in 1988, he is 32 years old. I always pictured him being somewhere in his mid forty's in Cybertronian years.
Bash Buggy was made in 1990, he is 30 years old. I kind’a pictured him being somewhere in his 30s actually, so that works out.
Red Van was made in 1993, she is 27 years old. I thought she could be in her very early 40s. Like 41 or maybe 42 years old.
Miata was made in 1994, she is 26 years old. I always pictured her being like in her early twenties. Think 22 to 23.
I haven’t talked about him yet, but Duck Truck was made in 1996, and is 24 years old. He’s one of the Decepticons, his year was written down so I figured I’d add him in too. I always pictured him as a younger Cybertronian, like in his 20s somewhere.
Jeepy was made in 1996, he is 24 years old. Which is actually how old I always pictured him being. Young and full of spirit, probably about 24 years old in Cybertronian years.
Ranger was also made in 1996, she is also 24 years old. But I pictured her being somewhere in her late 30s, closing in in 40.
White Truck was also made in 1996, he also is 24 years old. But I pictured him being rather young, maybe just getting to 20 or a tiny bit older. Not quite at 24 I feel.
Volvo was made in 1998, he is 22 years old. But I feel this old crank pot would fit being around 30 to 35 years old better.
Honda was made in 2000, she is 20 years old. That’s just about how old I imagined her being, maybe a little older though? Maybe 23 to 24 or something.
Beluga was made in 2004, she is 16 years old. I always pictured her being closer to her big sisters age though, so maybe about 20 to 22 years old.
Then... there’s the Dragsters.. and here’s the thing.. U.M.Dragster was made in 2006, so he is 14 years old.. he is our youngest car. Then there’s A.T.Dragster, she was made in 1969, which makes her a whopping 51 years old and our oldest car to date.
This is where I broke that age rule.. I wanted these two to be twins for a multitude of reasons. But how could they be? One is 14 and one is 51, how can they be twins? So I thought okay, they cant be twins, period. ...but they at least need to be siblings, their history demands it. But how would that work?
There are 37 years of age in between them. If they were siblings they couldn’t have grown up together because of the age difference, so there wouldn't be that sibling bond.. But that’s what I want for them at least, is for them to be siblings that grew up together.
So I figured I had two options. I could either follow the age rule that I had structured for everyone else, and just either make them related in some other way other than siblings, or make them not related at all..
Or.. I could completely break the rule so that these two could be siblings.
I’m sure you know which one I went with. I couldn't justify them being twins though because the age difference still bugged me, so they’re just siblings.
A.T is supposed to be in her late 20s, and her little brother U.M is in his early 20s.
When it comes to the real team prime?
I imagined Optimus was like.. in his 40s or something?
I imagined Ratchet is in his 50s somewhere, maybe closing in on 60?
Bulkhead might be somewhere in his 30s.
Wheeljack could be in his 30s too, but I always saw him being a little older than the others.. maybe closing in on 40?
Bumblebee always came off as like a teen, but realistically he might just be early 20s.
Arcee seems like she might be in her late 20s somewhere.
Smokescreen seems to be early 20s, not sure if he’s older or younger than Bumblebee though.
I felt like Ultra Magnus could be in his 40s, but he’d be younger than Optimus I’d guess.
Tumblr media
Ohh! That’s a clever one! :DD Well lets see, let me go through the list. XD
Suburban would probably tell you about the war itself, not really about his past specifically. Like, he’d tell you how the war started and what his job was as a medic. But he wouldn't tell you any of the gruesome stuff or much else, for his own sake and yours.
As far as Miata’s story has developed, she hasn’t experienced anything particularly traumatic. So she’d probably fill you in on all that she can remember.
Escort would tell you some stuff, but he wouldn’t tell you anything about what happened after the war on Cybertron. If you asked him he’d get pretty fidgety and would probably get upset.
Brown Suburban would tell you all the wrecker stories in the book, but would try and avoid the stories he thought you couldn’t handle. When it comes to his story specifically though.. he doesn’t want to talk about it.
Both Dragsters wouldn’t want to share their pasts, but might talk about their childhoods if you were nice enough.
Green Truck would probably tell you his whole life story, but would sugar coat it and gloss over the gruesome and traumatic details.
Vega would tell you everything he remembers. He would tell you about his life story, his family and his friends.. but then the story would abruptly cut, and Vega would kind’a get this.. strange look on his face. You’d ask, “What happens next?” And he would just quietly go, “..I.. I don’t know. Everything just.. goes black there. It was dark for a long time.. and then I just.. woke up.. thousands of years older than I was when I went to sleep.”
Red Van and Beluga would tell you the happy parts of their pasts and gloss over or sugar coat the gruesome parts.
If you coaxed him enough, White Truck would tell you everything, good and bad. But he’d be nervous or uncomfortable through most of it and it would put him in a weird mood for the rest of the day.
Honda would tell you in great detail about everything she remembers. But she would clam up when she got to the part of the story that talks about her first mission.
Ranger would tell you everything, good and bad, but would lighten it up a little bit as to not freak you out too much.
It would take some convincing, but Volvo would probably share a few interesting stories here and there. His past is not a pretty one, and he feels no reason to share it with anyone, unless its for educational reasons.
Jeepy wouldn’t tell you much. He doesn’t like to think about his past. But he would boast all day to anyone about that one time he saved someone's life or that time he got away from a dangerous situation unscathed.
Bash Buggy doesn’t like to talk about it much, but he would give you a general timeline of sorts. Like, “This happened, and then this, and then this guy came and this happened, and then this big thing happened, and a couple thousand years later I’m here.” kind’a thing.
Tumblr media
It was redraw of that one meme from Ice age XD
Tumblr media
But in all honesty, he probably has suffered enough damage at several points in his life that shut him down or at least should’ve, but he somehow got back up and kept moving.
Tumblr media
The first thing he did when he woke up and really processed it, was he went to go wake up Suburban and show him.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I.. think you’re talking about this one? Haven’t seen the movie but it seems fun XD. My taste in movies is 𝒟𝒾𝓈𝓃𝑒𝓎.
Tumblr media
You think what you’ve seen is cute? Boi you haven’t seen what he’s like when he’s trying to comfort someone. XD
Tumblr media
First off, how dare you make me cry with your sickly sweet and heart felt words. Second off, thank you so much! And third, I can go over the process of how the 16 of them came to be if it’ll help. Don’t worry I’ll try and sum it up.
So, with other types of characters all this unique personality stuff would be pretty hard.. but with these real life cars turned into Transformers stuff? It was kind’a easy for me to do this.
For one, I based the cars personalities off of the vibe that the cars always gave off to me, and their drivers personalities. The best example being Honda. I always saw the car having this sweet and gentle vibe, and her driver is the same way. So as a character, I just gave her what felt most familiar when looking at that car.
Brown Suburban has always gave off the vibe that I designed him with. The strong and silent type, but with a big heart for kids and family. *cough cough* the wreckers *cough cough*.
With Volvo I didn’t really have either things to base him off of, so I just basically copied Ratchet and shifted his personality around a bit.
With Bash Buggy though, he’s a new edition to the family. We got him this year I believe. So I just designed a bot that could match how his car looks, and a personality came with it. He could have an adventurous personality, which is why he’d be in dangerous situations and always get hurt. And then I think, “Hey! He could be a Wrecker! A really tiny one!”. The personality stuff was just kind’a there already or was easy to imagine.
Now.. their bodies.. uh.. well, I started with the same thing every time If I remember right. I would take the front of the car, take it apart or split it and rearrange it on the chest of the transformer.
With Red Van, I took the face of the car, split it down the center and spread them apart to make the breast plates.
Tumblr media
I basically did this with everyone else too. Just cut up the face of the car and rearranged them and put them on the chest of the transformers. Here’s Green Truck, Volvo and Vega as some more examples.
Tumblr media
Well, I notice now my mistake now.. You see Optimus, Ratchet, Bumblebee and Arcee have windows on their bodies. The glass parts of their forms don't just shatter and disappear, the glass windows either rest on their chests or back wings. I should have put windows on some of their chests, and not put the tires or their back so much. But eh, you live and you learn. I’ll do better with the cons.
Now, when it comes to the arms and legs of the transformers, I just drew what felt right.. I don’t know what to tell you.. I can try to show you my thought process maybe?
Red Van is square, but round, not sharp like Suburban. She is more hollow than she is dense and she is not very complicated. In looks, and in functionality. I also wanted key features of hers to be present on her body to help identify her. Such as her silver trim, her hood ornament, etc.
So, with all these things in mind, I drew a character that matched the car and had all the mentioned features.
Tumblr media
The face is more complicated.. but here’s what I remember thinking.
Tumblr media
Its complicated.. uhg, I don’t even know if this is helping.
But basically, I based the characters off of the cars they are, the history they have, and the people who drive them. For personality and looks.
By taking the car, deconstructing some parts of it and rearranging them on the body of the character, it makes things a little easier. And if the character is modelled after someone that already exists, it makes constructing their personality a lot easier.
Overall, this is all I can really tell you. Most of their designing was just stuff I pulled out of my aft and slapped on the paper. I have no idea how I thought of these things but I did, and now they’re here.
I hope this was somewhat informative, I know I probably didn’t explain it well or even answer your question.. If I didn’t, please. ask me again so I can actually try to help you.
Anyway, thank you for the ask. I took it as a huge compliment and it got me all giddy, XD I hope I was at least a little help in your artistic adventures. :} ♡

Madness draws: Behind the Scenes of the Bela/Farin: “Widumihei” comic.
A few months ago I posted here this comic:
Tumblr media
CLICK HERE for the original post about that comic where you can see it in better and bigger size, and also reblog it ;)
And this post is just a deep dive into how I plan, do and draw my comics.
Let’s start with sketchbook things...
So every comic needs a story, right? My comics usually are born from either some dialogue I imagine in my head or by an impulsive inspiration that happens when I see something or talk with people and a random idea is triggered. I’m very good at coming up with new ideas solely based on just one word or so which is why I often ask people if they have anything they would want to see/read because I suck at coming up ideas on my own. Or I do get ideas, but not as often as I’d want to.
This particular idea was very old and I have tried but I cannot find the piece that was my inspiration but it was in some of my old German books because I remember laughing at it with either my brother or even with the German teacher in 2011 or 2012. I was only able to find my first “sketch” of the story:
Tumblr media
This is in the notebook I used for writing down some comic ideas and even had one comic in it, plus it’s also my fanfiction writing notebook. It has no date but I know for sure it was either 2011 or 2012 because that’s when I did my last Bela/Farin comic and pretty much started my (unintentional) 6 year pause from drawing altogether.
I have always been trilingual when I do these plans for my comics, often writing the “narration” in Finnish and the dialog either in English or German because I just cannot imagine them to speaking Finnish. The translation of that text goes as:
COMIC (sarjis = sarjakuva = comic book in Finnish)
1. The phone is ringing. 2. F: “Widumihei?!” B: ? 3. B: “Farin wtf?” 4. Farin walks from another room. 5. B: “Widumihei?” 6. F: “It means, “will you marry me?”“ 7. B: *wtf* REPLAY:
1. Bela is sitting/laying somewhere. 2. The phone is ringing. Reached with his hand? 3. Looks at the phone, “wtf?”, a thought: “von Jan: Widumihei?!” 4. Bela: “Farin?” / “Jan?” 5. F comes from another room, looks in from behind the door frame or something. B: “Widumihei?” 6. F: “Widumihei: “WIllst DU MIch HEiraten”“ 7. B: “WTF”
So when I then started to draw these comics again in 2018, I kept thinking about this one too and still wanted to draw it one day. If you have read the finished comic, you may notice something different in the old plot versus new: I switched Bela’s and Farin’s roles. Back then I didn’t know too much yet but over the years I have learnt much much more about them and I just figured that asking to marry him even as a joke would be too much for Farin and that it would fit Bela’s persona much much better.
***
I had a bit of problems with getting started with this one, mainly because the last times I drew a dä comic was in June 2020, in April 2020 and before those in October 2019. Because of so long time between the comics, I just always forgot about my methods and in which order I do things and what works for me the best. So every time I started to work on a comic, I had to start completely over because all I had was blank paper and I somehow needed to get my thoughts in order and out of my head, into a physical form aka as text and images on the paper, and it’s easier said than done.
So pardon me but from this on the text is going to get a little bit confusing for a little while from now on - but it’s also a very good look over how the life with my suspected ADHD be like sometimes...
I started working on the plot once again to my sketchbook... I think it was somewhere in the beginning of 2020. Because the next idea there is from the summer. This is what the plot looked like at that point - here I had already switched their roles:
Tumblr media
Shortly, the texts go: 1. Farin is reading a book. 2. A phone makes a noise. 3. (Farin) looks at it/read the message. / 6. B appears into the doorway. / 11. F spits out the tea.
And underneath it you can see one of the stick figure storyboards I often do in order to kinda see the text in pictures better, and I will write down or draw important aspects like expressions (Farin’s eyebrows) or things like *facepalm’* or *eyeroll* so that I remember to add them.
Next I was struggling with the era. It needed to be an era with the old mobile phones with SMS options but still not too early because I feel that Farin would have not been the first in line to buy a brand new technology object, especially not when it’s a phone. I was even googling when did Germany get their first mobile phone - I remember I got my first phone aka Nokia 5510 in 2000 or 2001 after my mom got a new one and gave her old one to me, so the story shouldn’t happen too many years before the Millenium.
Tumblr media
Originally I planned 1997 for that - I needed to think about that based on their styles because shorter hair is harder to draw. Here’s me trying out some hairs and how they’re to draw and which era would suit my needs the best. I actually find the text hilarious altho it’s mine but this is what it’s in English:
Time period -> 1996-1997? 1998 I’ve never drawn 1999 is not that much fun to draw 2000 is already a bit too late? Bela not that much fun to draw. -2001 moustaches are not fun to draw?
I think I was struggling with my thoughts because the next thing in that sketchbook is yet another storyboard:
Tumblr media
Or actually I think this was just to see how many sheets I’d need and how many panels I could fit on one sheet.
Anyhow, I then did other things for some time before I got back to this project this year. Including finishing with the sketchbook I had been using since 2010 (and the half of it since 2018!) and I had to get myself a new one. So when I started to think about this comic again, one night I was just thinking about some Bela/Farin scenarios as usual and suddenly I just felt that I NEED to do the comic in the 1998 style!!! So suddenly we jump from the original 1997 idea to the new era, only because of the colors.
So asap I grabbed my sketchbook and started to look for the proper colors for the hairs:
Tumblr media
This one I posted here before too as I was struggling a lot and just felt that I didn’t know how to draw, again. Sometimes when I feel like that, I start drawing with my non-dominant aka left hand because it doesn’t have all that in muscle memory so drawing and writing with it feels more free and it feels almost like pressing a refresh button in my brain. Suddenly the right one know again how to draw because left isn’t too well in control. The below part of the image is done completely with the left hand, including the coloring.
And because I had now a new sketchbook, I somehow couldn’t... deal with the plot and plans being in a different sketchbook than everything else so I had write the plot/dialog AGAIN, into this new sketchbook, along with the storyboards and everything:
Tumblr media
Translations: kirja = book, puhelin = phone, oviaukossa = in the doorway, teet suusta = tea(s) out of a/the mouth. “Puhelin zoom” just means “close up to the phone screen” in Madness.
You can also see that I found out that I don’t need to do the stick figure storyboards to imitate a sheet when I can just draw this rectangle and smaller rectangles inside of it and write there numbers to match the things in the dialog to make it much easier for me to plan the pages. And here’s also a small easter egg: there’s 13 panels overall in this comic :D I almost did 12 but then felt that no, I really need to do 13 because, you know, the hairs, the era, the album title. And also because I like the number so much lmao.
So from there we get to the second storyboard which is not just stick figures anymore but just me planning how I want the panels to look like. To get the imagery of the rooms and facial expressions etc. out onto the paper so that I can see them in real life instead of my shady imagination that sometimes isn’t as vivid as what I could be.
Tumblr media
Also have you ever tried to draw a beach chair? It’s more difficult than you’d think:
Tumblr media
I tried to draw the same thing from the same reference photos so many times and still I always felt like I was trying to draw that impossible triangle or some other illusion image. And it just went on and on here:
Tumblr media
Originally I also had planned the second panel to be a close up of the phone so that Farin’s face would be left at the background from the frog perspective. That’s what I was trying to with that weird-ass face on the left but turned out that I have never drawn these characters from such angle and I just... couldn’t see it in my head clearly enough to be able to draw it. So I dismissed that idea and that’s why the angle changed from a phone close-up to a side view to the room and at Farin.
As I was in the middle of planning the second page, I suddenly wasn’t happy with my original plot anymore. I wasn’t sure if it would work and needed to think about it one more time. So I wrote two other dialogs here, along with a storyboards for them both. I ended up choosing B from those two options eventually.
I don’t remember anymore if I had already done the first sketch of the comics or not but at some point I just felt that I no longer knew how to draw in my style. Sometimes you just draw and learn wrong things and wrong methods that you get used to and then you have to take a break and actually do a little bit of studying over your own style to find again the way how you want to draw, and get rid of the bad habits and find the good ones again. In my case it was to draw the eyes way way too big when they originally never were THAT big, so I had to learn how to draw them small and normal again. That’s why I did these, as I really needed to pay attention to the faces and remember how to draw them again:
Tumblr media
The front-side views were another big readong for this “study” because I have drawn that perspective only once or twice before and I needed to figure out how I want to draw that. Also, I don’t know if it’s just me but for some reason the front-side Farin reminds me of one of the parent characters from this cartoon called The Rugrats which I watched as a kid. It was totally unintentional, but you can google The Rugrats if you don’t know how the charatcers looked like in the cartoon.
The things below are just me testing something. The red Farins were just to test how the colored pencils work on each other and how the fineliners work with the colored pencils, and which way is the better way to do the shading. And the red colored pencil was the only one available at the time so that had to do.
A little bit about the heads btw: You might notice some difference between the left and right faces. It’s because I have always, always struggled with drawing anything that is looking at right. Most of the animal portraits and all I have drawn so that they look at left because I just find it so much easier to draw. I think with comics it’s because I always start with the eye (and the eyebrows if I don’t forget it) and then do the forehead, nose, mouth and chin, and after that I either continue from the hair (from the front) or do the ear first. But when I am drawing them to look at right, I have to basically draw the mirror image and starting from the hair is not the key because it can easily mess up with the perspectives. I still usually draw everything in the same order but it really is difficult because I’m doing a mirror image and my own hand is on the way, too. Basically I’m drawing from right to left instead of left to right! (I think I should try drawing those with my left hand, then...)
And from here we get to the first sketch of the comic. From here on the images are from my phone’s camera so they are sometimes illegally bad but no can do, I again didn’t think I’d post these to anywhere:
Tumblr media
Here you can see I was mainly just focusing on the shapes and the space inside those panels. Just trying to see the perspective and how everything is. The only thing that I drew more precisely was the third panel, with the hand and phone. I had quite a nice memory of old phones in my head but I still googled for some reference photos of Nokia 5110 phones as that was my first phone (as I mentioned earlier), and I also happened to have some of my other old phones on the table nearby so I took my own hand reference photos too:
Tumblr media
They always say there’s a little bit of the artist in their art and this one literally has that - “Farin’s” hand is actually my hand! :D And I think the size is kinda on point too because this phone was like 2-3 times smaller than Nokia 5110 and I have small hands, and I believe Farin must have much bigger hands, so the 5110 probably would have looked about the same size in his hand.
After the first sketch, the next step was then - the second sketch:
Tumblr media
I also wanted to add more action to the panels so that it’s interesting to look at and not just basically the same panel over and over again with just different speech bubbles, so I came up with the idea of Farin spitting out his tea not being as cartoony as it could be and that he would have to actually clean it up instead of just leaving it there just because in cartoons/comics everything is possible. That way I got more depth into the panels and it was also interesting for me to draw because I drew lots of new postures I have never drawn before, and I’m surprised how well it went despite me not even looking for any kind of reference photos! The only things I used reference photos for were the beach chair, and the phone in a hand. (I have actually always been quite good at drawing 3D objects and spaces, especially if they are rectangular.)
So yeah, this is the phase where everything is then finished with pencil and what follows next is drawing the lines with fineliners - I use Sakura Pigma Micron fineliners for everything else, and black Promarker for doing the lines for the panels (and also if I need bigger pitch black areas done).
Tumblr media
Here are the panel lines done but I only had a photo of this first sheet.
Tumblr media
And here are both sheets with the finelining done and all pencil marks etc. erased. I really like this part because it looks so clean when all those sketch marks are gone. It’s also crazy to think I literally spend hours drawing something in pencil only to erase it all away later :D
Tumblr media
And here’s one photo of the coloring process, the first one has only the base colors done but none of the shadows yet (apart from the shirts), and the second one has some of the shadows done but not everything yet.
Usually after coloring, I will then go through everything with the fineliners one more time to make sure all the lines are dark enough as it just gives everything the finished yet a bit “sketchy” look that what I really like with my comics. The actual last detail is always adding my signature along with the date or year.
And here’s the finished comic one more time for comparison:
Tumblr media
Don’t forget to check and reblog the actual post about this comic if you read this post all the way here. I’d appreaciate that a lot since art and artist on Tumblr are not really that much appreciated.

BIOGRAPHY
Theeran doesn’t quite remember much of his home life before he moved in with his father and even that is brief. He remembers men gathered around a table playing cards in the kitchen and visits to his aunt’s house. Visits grew longer and then one day he wasn’t seeing his father at all. It felt like some kind of foreshadowing for the future, his upbringing in Leicester was nothing to write home about.
It made sense why he’d been shipped off, or at least he thought so, when he realized what he was and from there what his aunt was, what they all were. He’d been young, hardly a boy of ten who’d thought his two older cousins just had really active imaginations. They talked of Fenrir and their ties to him as he was some sort of original shifter. While he’d believed what they were, he thought a lot of what they spoke of was surely just some kind of myth.
Until he’d shifted for the first time. He remembers pain and confusion and then being surrounded by fellow foxes. There were worse things to turn into, in the grand scheme of things, he’d lucked out. Looking back, he does feel a little bad for his aunt having to then deal with three foxes running around her house making problems on purpose.
And make problems they did.
His cousins had never really bothered with him all that much aside from telling him about animals and waxing about magic. They were opposites, the two older boys were mischievous, liked pulling pranks, were messy. Theeran was organized and quiet, spent a lot of time to himself drawing, but when he did manage to get the two of them back for their shenanigans, it was carefully crafted and more elaborate. With the three of them on friendlier terms, his poor aunt and schoolmates were often plagued by the tricky triad.
At least until they got older and the eldest boy went off to university and the second wasn’t far off. To be closer, they moved to London and Theeran entered his junior year of secondary school as the new kid. He’d taken the loss of his cousins hard, had a handful of friends back home but they’d been fair weather and they hadn’t known of shifters and magic. It was perhaps the fear of being alone that had him quick to seek out alliances.
Kasey was another new student and it was apparent from the pins on her backpack and far away look in her eyes that she wasn’t quite going to fit into the box they were meant to be put in. What started as an orientation became a friendship unlike anything he’d ever experienced before. A bit of an oddball, but a sweet one, she had dreams and aspirations and made a point to ask him about his own. Which led him to realizing he hadn’t quite thought ahead that far but they’d both decided they hadn’t wanted to just go the ordinary route, didn’t want to just go to university, get a job, work, and then die.
So at seventeen, on the cusp of graduation, they got two train tickets and started off on an adventure.
They had money that they’d saved from their after school jobs and what Theeran’s absent mother had left him. From there he’d just listened to Kasey’s dream locations and planned their whole trip, or at least as much of it as he could. Part of the point had been to sort of just go wherever Kasey’s little heart wanted to go and he just quietly supported her in her journey, enjoying meeting other supernaturals along the way.
They went all over Europe, would stick around in a place for a couple of weeks at a time before moving on for a year or so. When money got low, Kasey broke out the tarot cards or rune stones to tell fortunes, he sold some sketches or small paintings, managed to win at cards, or did some odd jobs. It was simple living for the most part, some days were better than others, but they were seeing the world and he wasn’t in a dead end job or toiling through some art school. It was real world experience, he couldn’t get that behind a desk or writing essays.
Except the world wasn’t always kind to dreamers.
As hard as he tried to keep Kasey from worrying about anything, sometimes the reality of their situation weighed heavily on his best friend and there’d be times where they couldn’t find or afford decent housing, where they had little to no food. It was a heavy burden on him, being a sort of caretaker, being the rock, the man with a plan, but it was worth it to see her smile, to see her discovering herself and her power.
But that was just the tip of the iceberg.
They’d ran into a good amount of fellow supernaturals over time, older, younger, their age and on their own journeys. But not everyone they met was friendly and it’s not like they weren’t aware of what could lurk in the dark. They kept a strict curfew, both tried to be back to their lodgings before dark, but a card game ran too long, or maybe it was that his luck had run out for the evening, and he found himself cornered by vampires.
Some dapper man showed up and chastised them before they could really take a bite out of them. He himself had been a vampire but compared to the others who had been quick to swarm, he seemed entirely too composed. David Hamilton was the most human vampire that he’d ever met.
From what he’d learned over the years, shifters were the protector’s of humanity and vampires couldn’t be trusted to do much aside from harm it. So he had his reservations when it came to them, and yet he owed this one his life and he had to think about Kasey. He was the man with a plan after all, and the plan was to stay alive, he couldn’t look a gift horse in the mouth. Or a well off vampire with a nice house in Cambridge.
It wasn’t a permanent thing, life was easier for sure, but it wasn’t all that long until the pair was itching to get going again. The pair inevitably set out again, seeking to know more about magic and find out more about themselves in the process. Occasionally they find themselves staying at one of David’s several castles, Theeran can’t find it in himself not to stay in touch with the man who’d shown them such kindness.
So when David calls to tell him that he’s got a place in Greece with a spare room, Theeran is quick to take him up on the offer. Not only is Greece beautiful, but Corinth in particular has been rumored to be the home to supernatural shenanigans that he can’t quite turn away from.

These are two pages from the August 1994 issue of the Iraqi art publication, al-Wasiti--available in full as a scan on the MAIA site, sourced from the personal archives of Dia Azzawi: https://artiraq.org/maia/archive/files/al-wasiti-vol-2-no-3-aug-1994_8f5d96da24.pdf. The simple newsprint format is a retreat from the Ministry of Information’s full-color publications of previous decades, and would seem to reflect the deprivations of life in Iraq under sanctions. So too does the content of the issue, which features discussion of earlier events in Iraqi art history juxtaposed with philosophical discussion about interior/ exterior relationships and dislocated signs (all in the absence of any color reproductions). Perhaps most notably, the issue examines the activities and pronouncements of an “Institute for Aesthetic Discourse” (مؤسسة الخطاب الجمالي), established that year, 1994, and reproduces sketches and texts by the artists Shakir Hassan Al Said and Hanaa Malallah. These are of particular interest in light of the recent publication This Green is Not Green: Letters between Shakir Hassan Al Said and Hanaa Malallah, trans. Saleem Al-Bahloly and Hania Zawaneh (Artzotic/Struktur, 2021), which takes aspects of the artists’ intellectual friendship as a subject. The book is comprised of twelve letters that Al Said sent to Malallah in 1996 (a date that falls just after his temporary relocation to Amman, Jordan, a period of profound spiritual alienation) and eleven “responses” that Malallah composed much later, once she returned to the letters following Al Said’s death in 2004.
I am always trying to collect sketches by painters as one kind of guide to the stakes of their painting practice. Here I think Mallalah’s, with its labyrinth and meanders serving as an ornamental grammar and a desert habitat for blobs and blots, can help us to read her gridded paintings c. 1994 as systematic explorations of language and its ruptures rather than a mere drift into “abstraction” as a stylistic choice.
The sketches also offer some ballast to the presentation of Al Said as teacher in This Green is Not Green. Although the focus of the book would seem to be about the self-abdication of the teacher-pupil relationship and the madness and even violence of its demands (a dynamic that Mallalah describes as difficult, and as coming into focus as valuable as a template for self-practice only following Al Said’s death in 2004), this August 1994 issue of al-Wasiti seems to me to present Malallah as a concurrent speaker with Al Said. That is, as a kindred sifter, a maker of puzzles, and a manipulator of a (shared) forest of signs. I note also that one letter by Al Said dated 1994 actually appears in This Green is Not Green. From the looks of it, the artist may have brought the original letter to Amman and later added it to another sketch/note (dated 1995) before sending it to Mallalah? In that 1994 letter, Al Said references discussions in al-Wasiti and connects the graphic language of dots and arrows to his overarching concept of the One Dimension. Mallalah’s 2006 “response,” in turn, discusses the theory of the One Dimension at even greater length, analyzing Al Said’s practice of layering self-consistent but meaningless systems within the same two-dimensional plane as a critical practice. If we take the creation of the Institute for Aesthetic Discourse as a kind of watershed for Iraqi artists in the 1990s--and certainly it was for Al Said as teacher and Mallalah as student--then these 1994 illustrations of “discourse” as broken signs seem to capture the ambivalence of its peculiar pedagogy (mounted, of course, in the years following the first Gulf War). How were these pictures of language as a prison-house read? What are the stakes of a method of teaching that expected its participants to be unwilling, to find themselves unable to enter?

Do not adjust your WiFi settings. No, you are not experiencing a severe case of Deja Streaming-vu. HBO Max’s list of new releases for May 2021 are indeed highlighted by two very recent WarnerMedia hits.
For starters, Tenet finally makes its long-awaited HBO Max this month. Mark your calendars as May 1 is the day that you can finally watch Christopher Nolan’s latest cerebral thriller. Of course, Tenet already had its theatrical release, but obviously that was not really an option for many of us. In addition to Tenet, Wonder Woman 1984 makes its triumphant return to HBO Max this month on May 13. The Wonder Woman sequel already premiered on HBO Max this past December, now it’s getting a second run on the streamer.
In terms of newer originals, May is relatively light for HBO Max. The Jean Smart-starring comedy Hacks premieres on May 13. The latest Adventure Time: Distant Lands special arrives on May 20. May also contains two prominent finales with The Nevers closing out part 1 of its first season on May 15 and Mare of Easttown wrapping up its case on May 30.
It’s also not a big month for Warner Bros. theatrical releases. The only one to speak of is Those Who Wish Me Dead on May 14. Thankfully that will be augmented by some library titles on May 1 including The Interview, Jackie Brown, and Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.
Here is everything else to expect in May 2021.

Biography
Hayley always was interested in art from a young age. She grew up taking art classes through every year in school, and even some classes outside of school. While she can paint, draw and sketch she really fell in love with sculpture as she grew older. Born and raised in Charlotte, North Carolina she decided to go to North Carolina State University in Raleigh to pursue her art career.
While she was at college, she met her ex boyfriend. He was studying to become a screenwriter after school and Hayley fell hard for him. They met at a play on campus and they grabbed some drinks after. It wasn’t long before they were dating and Hayley was in love. When school was over he had talked a lot of moving to California to LA to pursue his dreams of being a screenwriter. She decided she could be a sculptor anywhere and decided to move with him.
About a few months after their move here, she went to visit him at work one day. She walked in on him sleeping with a wannabe actress who thought she could further both of their careers. Hayley lost it and threw a big scene, she broke up with him right then, drove back to their house and took some of his clothes, scripts and belongings into the backyard and set them on fire in a trash can.
Hayley moved out and found some roommates in a house on Redcliff Street. She decided not to leave LA because fuck her ex, she wasn’t about to let him chase her out of a city she was starting to like. She found a small, local gallery to sell some of her pieces, but the money wasn’t enough to pay her bills. A friend of hers told her about escorting and how much money she could make.
Soon after she got a job with an escort agency to help make up some of her income. She grew to like the work and now her pieces are selling better but she keeps working as a non-sexual escort because she likes the money, and she loves the events and dates she gets taken to. Hayley loves how sometimes she can pretend to be a completely different person, and she loves that there are never any emotional strings. Some of the events she attends she can also network her art at. It’s a great job and she enjoys being a non-sexual escort, though paying extra could get you some kissing on the date.
During her time here, Hayley has come to love L.A. and though she would love to travel the world and maybe head to a different city to live, she’s happy to stay here.
