Author’s Note(s): I’ve been thinking about a little fic like this for a while! hope you enjoy it lovelies!
Summary: A rainy walk in the park, two cute pups and one hell of a guy. Could today get any better?
Warning(s): major fluff and a bit of swearing.
The rain is heavy on your father’s old jacket, weighing you down as you trudged through the thick of the park, nose wet and cheeks cold. You loved the rain, the pitter patter on the roof of your London studio flat, the droplets trailing down the glass panes before meeting in the middle and merging into one. You liked the rain. Watching it from the inside.
Now this, you did not like.
But you did it for him.
He was the light of your life, he sparked a glow in your darkest and loneliest hours. He was a treat to look forward to, when coming home from four hours worth of university lectures on the importance of knowing the difference between there, their and they’re. (That’s not really what your lectures were about but that’s what it felt like)
He always greeted you with a kiss or a cuddle, warmed you up on cold days or chilled with you on lazy ones. He was your everything. He was your dog. A second generation, purebred Staffie with brown fur as smooth as molten chocolate and sea foam blue eyes that could take you to the beachside just by looking into them.
His snow white markings contrasted with the dark of his fur, reminding you somewhat of an Oreo. His personality was so sweet, much like said cookie and he meant the world to you. He was your king. Your Kingsley. The staffie pup, lead you along the path, letting out small yips as he tried to lap at the rain water. Shaking your head fondly, you bent down, causing your pup to turn and face you.
“Kingsley baby, we gotta head back soon. I don’t want you to catch a cold” you cooed, rubbing behind his ear affectionately. The staffie keened into your touch, letting out a soft bark in protest. You smiled again, scratching a little harder when he slipped on the puppy dog look. “Don’t gimme that face”
You sat there for a while, pouting back at the dog as he silently begged you to stay. A small crack of thunder from the depths of the grey abyss, up above, made you curse before looking back at your beloved dog. He whimpered once more and you sighed heavily. Damn you and your cute little face. “Okay baby, one more lap?”
Kingsley barked gratefully before hopping about excitedly as you stood. He was off not long after, you following quickly behind as you held a tight grip on his leash. He loved the rain. You loved him.
After around half a lap round the path, Kingsley stopped to bark at a tree and you listened with a faint smirk when other dogs barked back. Pulling out your phone, you checked the time to see if you’d have enough hours to study before heading to bed. A tug on the leash that connected you to your beloved pup caused your gaze to flicker up, the dark chocolate furred animal was now standing stall and alert and you furrowed your brows with slight confusion.
A split second later; you were running.
Clinging on for dear life as your pup darted through the park, weaving in and out of fellow dog owners or people who were making their way home. The dog leapt over puddles of murky, black ink water, tainted with the sopping wet soil. The cool liquid splashed up your legs, brandishing your overwashed and faded black jeans, resulting in you groaning as you tried to get a tighter grip on Kingsley’s leash. The staffie pup wasn’t having it, growling at you before tugging back on the leash and surging forwards. God he was strong, what were you feeding him?
He howled again, into the thick crowd of the park, this time getting a response from another dog that was closer. Yelping in fear, you tried to steady your feet as your dog lead you further into the crowd and almost toppled over when he came to a sudden halt. About a metre or two away, stood a male around the same age as you, his hair was a hazelnut brown, thick and curly locks sticking together under the temp of the rainfall, his face was flushed red from previous exertion, he was kind of tall, compared to you at least. Heavily built too, from what you could see.
He had a dog too,  a silky coat that was as silver as the full moon on a clear night with sweet brown eyes. The man’s eyes met yours for a split second, as if to apologise for his dog leading yours. You shook your head silently, offering a small smile before tugging at Kingsley’s leash again so you could go home. You did not deal well in the presence of attractive men. You were too socially awkward for this.
The two dogs had other plans, unexpectedly surging forward into the depths of the rain and towards each other. “Tessa!” The man spoke with a thick British accent, lurching forward with his dog.
“Kingsley!” You gasped out vehemently as you were forced into a rather, rock hard figure. You gripped onto their slightly wet attire,  your fists forming bunches around the material of their jacket as you steadied yourself. Their arm came around your waist to support you, and when you looked up, you were met with the, now heavily blushing, man from earlier.
Almost immediately (you had been distracted by his highly inviting warm brown eyes), you tried to yank yourself away from the man. Only to find a light pressure pulling at your legs. Eyes wide, you whipped your head over to the right, noting how the two dogs sat proudly next to each other with unclipped leashes...which now bound you to the dangerously attractive stranger. Shit.
“Fucking hell Kingsley...really?” You whined to your dog (he barked amusedly in response) before  glancing back down, between your bodies, feeling the grip on your waist tighten. The man let out a feather light chuckle and you swore you could feel your soul ascending to heaven. What a gorgeous sound. “I’m so so sorry-“
You blushed when he intensified his grip, pushing you flush against his chest as if he didn’t want you to let go...or maybe he was just trying to stop you from falling. You couldn’t tell. “Hey don’t be mad at the little guy, Kingsley was it?” His voice came out, warm and smooth unlike the cool splatters of rain that attacked your face. You could only nod shakily in response, feeling as if you were going to melt from being so close to such a beautiful person. He grinned, jerking his head over to the dog that sat beside yours. “That’s my baby Tessa, and I’m Tom... I would offer you a handshake but-“
You chuckled at that, eyes sparkling with delight and Tom swore he’d never seen a prettier sight. “I’m (Y/N)- uh - nice to meet you?” You smiled again, wriggling in his heated grip. “As much as I would like to shake your hand, it would be much better if we tried to untangle ourselves”
The brunette nodded his head in agreement, removing his arm from its home on your hip and you sighed at the loss of contact. You both made quick work of slipping out of Tessa’s bright red, extremely expensive looking leash before moving on to Kingsley’s lesser looking one. A little yip caused your eyes to dart over to the two puppies, Tessa seemed to be very interested in you staffie’s collar and you grinned at their cuteness. Looks like someone had a crush on your boy. “Your dog- Tessa? She’s really cute” you mumbled with a burning blush as Tom’s hands smoothed down your legs to reach the other end of the leash.
“Hmmm, so are you-“ He mumbled absentmindedly before freezing. “I mean...aren’t all dogs cute?”
You chuckled when he stood, stretching your legs as they appreciated their new found freedom. “Nice save!” You teased with a wink, causing Tom to rub the back of his neck sheepishly. The slightly taller man opened his mouth as if he was going to say something when the two dogs charged at you both with full speed.
All would’ve been fine, if it wasn’t for the pond that you were standing next too.
You were knocked backwards, oxygen being forced out of its residence in your lungs and coming out as smokey puffs into the surrounding atmosphere. Time seemed to slow down as you braved yourself for the impact, your back reaching the depths of the ice water first. The murky, mud brown water seeped through your jacket and into your bones, sending chills down your spine whilst creating a chatter in your teeth. You screwed your eyes shut as you lay in the water, mentally cursing your dog (and maybe Tom’s?) for pushing you into the water.
“(Y/N)!” Tom’s lush voice called out, making your (eye colour) hues flutter open. That’s when you felt the weight above you. Tom’s arms were on either side of your head, pinning you down to the rocky floor of the pond. He was panting lightly, his warm breath fanning your cheeks. Chewing your bottom lip nervously, you met the man’s concerned gaze and couldn’t help but admire him. His fluffy hot chocolate locks were soaked with the water, small droplets sliding down the slope of his slightly crooked nose and dripping down onto the bow of his pink lips. His eyes were so much prettier up close, dark, tempting and bursting with warmth like freshly tempered chocolate-Black flecks decorating them like chocolate hundreds of thousands. You took note of the honey brown freckles that tickled his supple cheeks and the sharpness of his jawline that contrasted with his cute  face. He was beautiful up close and now you were blushing like mad. “Are you okay?”
You shivered lightly as he offered a hand to help you sit up. “I’m f-fine” you allowed yourself to stutter out, not sure if it was because of his proximity or because of the cold. It was raining much harder now, and you were really starting to become grateful for your studio flat, that wasn’t too far away from the park. “Thank you”
The man smiled sweetly, helping you to stand as the water sloshed about by your legs. Both of your clothes were soaking wet, as you rung out your t-shirt as jacket. What you couldn’t give for a hot bath right now. The pair of you walked hand in hand out of the pond and you savoured the warmth of his palm until you reached the mischievous puppies. Clipping Tessa and Kingsley back onto their leashes, yourself and Tom lead them to the entrance of the park, so you could return home.
You couldn’t help the feeling of sadness that settled in your chest, knowing that you’d probably never see Tom again but you tried to enjoy the few minutes you had left with him before you parted ways, whilst he asked you questions about your life. Your dogs walked at a leisurely pace ahead of you, seemingly much slower and closer as if they didn’t want to leave each other and you swore you heard Kingsley whimper when the four of you came to a stop outside the Park’s exit. “So this is where we part ways” Tom trailed off into the rain as you confirmed his thoughts with a nod. “I’m sorry about Tessa, she isn’t usually like this...”
“It’s okay! And I should apologise for Kingsley! He doesn’t act like this either but he seemed to really like Tess” you laughed back, causing Tom’s lips to quirk up into a smile. A moment passed with no words. “I’ll see you around then”
As you turned to leave, the taller male grabbed your wrist, causing you to face him with a confused frown. “I-I” he whispered, punctuating his words. “I know we just met but you seem really sweet and my dog kind of pushed you into the water so I was wondering if you wanted to go get coffee!” Tom blurted out, sighing in relief when he’d finished.
You blinked, trying to gather your bearings. This man. This beautiful specimen of a man had asked your socially awkward self on a date. Wow. You shook your head to rid your messy train of thoughts from your mind when you realised that both of you were still standing in the rain, waiting for your answer. “Tom-uh...I’d love to but-“ you whispered shakily, trying not to let your heart sink as his shoulders dropped in disappointment. Grabbing your nerves by the balls, you tried again. “But my apartment is right around the corner and I make a mean cuppa...you’re welcome to join me. A change of clothes is also included!”
You beamed up at him shyly, watching as his expression changed from a solemn frown to a bright smile which contrasted with the dark sky up above. The two dogs at your feet barked excitedly in unison, causing Tom to grin at you with acceptance.
“Yeah” he mumbled happily, looking down at your two dogs that wagged their tails with delight. “I think we’d like that”
