Nobunaga - Idly mentions that it’s a nice day to do some yardwork.

Hideyoshi - Immediately creates a color-coded duty roster. Assigns self the task of planting some saplings by the front gate of the castle.

Masamune - Assigned task: mowing the front lawn. Performed task: mowed half the front lawn, found some fallen apples, and disappeared inside to bake hand pies.

Mitsuhide – Assigned task: prune the shrubbery. Performed task: found a ninja in the shrubbery. Conned ninja into the pruning the shrubbery by pointing out that Ieyasu was nearby.

Ieyasu – Assigned task: harvest medicinal herb garden. Performed task: harvested half of medicinal herb garden, then was spooked by strange ninja in the shrubbery. Abandoned task to hide from strange ninja in the shrubbery.

Ranmaru – Assigned task: harvest fruits from orchard. Performed task: ate three peaches, then threw some apples at Masamune.

Keiji – Assigned task: mowing the back lawn. Performed task: Zoomed around the perimeter of the yard singing “Holding Out For a Hero” at the top of his lungs.

Mitsunari – Assigned task: weed the vegetable garden. Performed task: weeded the carrots out of the garden, then took over Masamune’s abandoned riding mower. Immediately got foot stuck under the brake and ends up on a collision course with Keiji (who was singing too loud to notice).

Kennyo – Not assigned any task. Stops by to rake the zen garden. Performed task: Raked the zen gardens. Left as silently as he appeared.

Hideyoshi – finished his self-assigned task, returns to front of the castle. Performed additional tasks:

Warlords Opening up MC’s Refrigerator (after she’s not been home for three months).

I wonder, if I spent three unexpected months in the Sengoku era, what my refrigerator would look like when I returned. Probably… a lot like what it looks like now.

Again, I have called for reinforcements….

Nobunaga:

Opens door. Looks for candy. Sees no candy. Shuts door.

Hideyoshi:

Opens door. Recoils. Slams door shut. Goes to The Container Store for supplies. Forgot The Container Store has restraining order against him. Is not heard from again.

Ieyasu:

Opens door. Recoils. Shuts door. Retreats to the balcony and crumples into a fetal position, scanning the skies for the next wormhole to take him home.

Kennyo:

Opens door. Recoils. Gives refrigerator Last Rites.

Mitsuhide:

Remembered that The Container Store has a restraining order against Hideyoshi. Didn’t remind Hideyoshi. Opens door. Grabs the closest thing. Eats.

Yukimura:

Opens door. Stares into the refrigerator for a very long time. Eventually sighs and shuts door. Asks MC how she’s managed to survive this long.

Masamune and Motonari:

Open door. Immediately discover the three items in it that are still edible, and challenge each other to an Iron Chef style competition.

Ranmaru:

Refuses to go anywhere near refrigerator, but happily performs the play by play of Masamune vs Motonari cooking duel.

Kanetsugu:

Refuses to let Kenshin go anywhere near the refrigerator. “My Lord, it’s too dangerous. Let me take care of this.” Is stabbed by Kenshin.

Kenshin:

Learns Masamune and Motonari are dueling. Tries to join the fun. Is disappointed to learn it is a cooking duel. Offers to make the competition more exciting by creating a boundary around the stove. Promises to stab anyone who ventures out of bounds.

Sasuke:

Bypasses the crowd in the kitchen to go to the balcony, where he sits and watches Ieyasu.

Shingen:

Bypasses refrigerator to do reconnaissance. Discovers package of Twinkies in pantry. Eats one. Offers other to MC. Becomes aroused by MC eating Twinkie. Takes MC into bedroom. Neither are seen for a while.

Kicho:

Finds MC’s stash of take-out menus and orders a pizza.

Yoshimoto:

Opens refrigerator. Sees a fuzzy blue thing and goes into an artistic rhapsody over the wonders of nature.

Mitsunari:

Looks over Yoshimoto’s shoulder. Wonders why MC keeps a kitty in the refrigerator. Yoshimoto says item is not a cat. Nor is it alive. Mitsurani points out that the item is fuzzy like a cat and moving like a cat. Fuzzy Blue Thing appears to be alive.

Fuzzy Blue Thing:

Makes a break for it.

Keiji:

Grabs a cast iron skillet, lets out a war whoop, and wallops the crap out of Fuzzy Blue Thing.

A Response to “Why Harry & Hermione Should Be Together”, a YouTube Video by the Super Carlin Brothers

First, there are some things that I want to get out of the way:

I harbor no hatred towards Jonathon and Ben or any members of the Super Carlin Brother team and this is not meant as a reason for anyone to leave hate comments on their videos or social media. I have been a fan of theirs for several years now and am simply using their video to get my opinions on the matter out there.

I am all for letting people have their own opinions and people shipping whatever they want, with a couple exceptions such as pedophilia and incest, neither of which is the case here. This is not meant to make Harry/Hermione fans feel attacked or excluded. Again, I am just using the reasons stated in defense of Harmione in this video to create a list of reasons of why I, personally, am against them being together.

Some quotes might be slightly misquoted due to very quick annotations on my part, but I believe the meaning of the quotes stayed the same.

The video starts out with Ben wanting to get a few things out of the way before getting on to his reasons on why Harry and Hermione should be together and those things were: “Hermione is, like, whatever comes, like, one steo above queen.”, Movie Ginny, and horrible Harry/Ginny moments in the movies which honestly instantly put me into fight or flight mode because while he explains that he doesn’t know if the movies are affecting his judgement, I could tell right away that a lot of the reasons were going to boil down to the movies.

Then he moves on to his reasons which in summary are: Harry and Hermione are really great friends, Harry and Ginny came out of nowhere, Ron and Hermione fight a lot, and he ships Ron and Luna. Below, I will discuss each of these reasons and my thoughts on it.

Reason #1: “Harry and Hermione are just really good friends who get along and work well together.”

Sure, they’re great friends, I’ll give you that, but let me show you how they act when Ron isn’t around:

Deathly Hallows, Chapter 16 Godric's Hollow, pages 311 and 312

Now let’s get to his actual reasoning

“In the first book it seems like that’s what they’re setting you up for anyway.”

Interesting take, I wonder why he thinks this.

“Ron is straight up mean to Hermione all the way up to Halloween.”

Oh, really, an eleven year old was mean to another eleven/twelve year old and then they became friends. How odd. That never happens in real life. (Note the sarcasm.) And I wonder, was Harry friends with her before Halloween? *thinks back on book* Hmm, nope.

“...Extremely touching moment right before Harry has to go through and face down Quirrel.”

Philosopher’s Stone, Chapter 16 Through the Trapdoor, pages 286 and 287

Listen, if I thought one of my friends was about to die, I don’t need to be their soulmate to say something nice to them before I may never see them again. Plus, they’re eleven and twelve at this point, and even if Hermione did have a crush on him then, that doesn’t mean they belong together.

“It’s not like the rest of the books are just littered with confessions of admiration. I think it’s just overall the way these two would treat each other, like, it comes with so much more respect, it feels like.”

Friends can respect each other.

“It seems like all the time, she’s throwing her arms around him, like a big hug whenever she sees him.”

I feel like a lot of the hugs are movie scenes but also friends can show physical affection, hugs do not mean someone likes you.

“She’s like kinda low-key super interested in Harry’s love life.”

This was about Cho and Hermione’s interest in Harry and Cho’s friendship/relationship but I’ve had complete strangers interested in my love life, let alone my friend’s interest, it does not mean any of them liked me.

I didn’t get a direct quote on these next two, but he goes off on a tangent about Krum and Hermione (which I do not even want to talk about) and ended it with his theory that Hermione only went to the Yule Ball with Krum to make Harry jealous and backs it up with zero proof - unless you count stating that Krum is also a seeker is great evidence, which I do not.

He also brings up the fact that Hermione helps Harry with the summoning charm before the first task in Goblet of Fire but Ron let Harry practice the stunning spell on him repeatedly before the third task so... I’m just saying if we’re going to base ships off people helping Harry with a task, we have better options.

Honestly, a lot of evidence in the video for Hermione and Harry was speculation about Hermione liking Harry and very little on whether Harry liked Hermione, which matters just as much, and we know for a fact that he didn’t:

Deathly Hallows, Chapter 19 The Silver Doe, page 378

Reason # 2: “Harry and Ginny, I guess are, like, fine, but it’s this thing that’s, like, lightly introduced where Ginny has a crush on him in book two and then it sort of evaporates and doesn’t exist at all until it comes on full bore in book six and it kind of feels, like, shoehorned in.”

This reason is given little evidence, other than a theory that Hermione was “eliminating the biggest threat” by telling Ginny to date other guys, which is just weird.

The build up of Harry and Ginny’s friendship and eventual relationship is subtle but amazing and I really suggest you check out @hillnerd ‘s post on it here because they explain the build up better than I ever could.

Reason #3: “Ron and Hermione fight... a lot.”

Disclaimer: A lot of these quotes are less about them fighting and more about Ben trying to discredit Ron and Hermione.

“It’s not that I don’t like Hermione and Ron together, like, I would say they’re a 95 out of 100, it works pretty good, but I’m here to say that Harry and Hermione are a straight up one hundo out of one hundo. Okay, maybe not a one hundo out of one hundo but at least a 96 and when did Hermione ever settle for one point lower than she possible could have on a quiz.”

Relationships are not a quiz that can be graded and Hermione did not settle for Ron, this is just a horrible argument.

“Hermione and Ron, they don’t exactly always share the same kind of intimate friendship.”

Order of the Phoenix, Chapter 23 Christmas on the Closed Ward, page 503

He specifically uses this book excerpt to back up his point, stating that Hermione’s responses to gifts prove that she likes Harry better than Ron - when in truth, she just likes Harry’s gift better.

“...Yule Ball though, let’s actually talk about that because I feel like it’s a really great example of Ron not noticing Hermione.”

Goblet of Fire, Chapter 22 The Unexpected Task, page 400

“He’s only just now realizing that she is someone that he either is or even could be romantically interested in.”

I just want to point out that at this point, Ron is fourteen, and fourteen year olds, at least in my experience, are not the smartest. Yes, he was being a bit of git in this scene, thinking that just because Hermione was a girl and their friend, she should go with one of them, and thinking that it’s impossible she could have gotten a date on her own - but he obviously knew she was a girl. And yeah, maybe he is just realizing that he could be attracted to her, but fourteen isn’t a weird age to begin recognizing attraction.

Ron and Hermione have a great relationship, and yes, in a lot of the text, they are fighting. But we should not forget that Harry is narrating the books and we don’t get to see the entirity of their relationship. Of course he’s narrating about their fights - that’s the part of their friendship/relationship that effects him.

“Secret” Reason #4: “I think that Ron should have ended up with Luna.”

I can see some of the reasoning for this because there is a little bit of evidence of Luna maybe liking Ron in Order of the Phoenix, but I don’t think we see anything that would suggest Ron liking Luna, which again, is also important. And he gives no reason why he thinks Ron and Luna would have been better suited for each other.

Finally, Ben’s concluding point was

“And you know what, if I’m reading too much into the books which maybe we do, the movies go out of their way to reinforce the idea.”

This concluding statement is basically my earlier fear coming true, when in the end, all the reasons boiled down to a montage of scene of Harry and Hermione in the movies, which let’s be honest, were basically just Steve Kloves’ Harmione fanfiction.

I’m going to be honest, I watched this video all the way through twice, and I found the reasoning weak and not at all convincing. You can ship whatever you want - even Harry and Hermione - but that doesn’t mean it would work in actual canon.

The warp is also visible on the back when you place it alongside a straight object. We presume that this is a one-off problem as the bend is too small for it to qualify as a curved display.

The Duet 7 weighs 1180 g or 802 g (tablet only), whcih makes it just a little heavier than the Surface Pro 7 with a Type Cover. The keyboard cover itself weighs 378 g. It is made of aluminum and is equipped with a small battery for the Bluetooth function. Microsoft's Type Cover only weighs 292 grams; this explains the difference in weight.

The ThinkPad X1 Tablet G3-20KJ001NGE weighs 900 grams on its own while the Dell Latitude 7200 weighs 851 g. Both are heavier than the Duet 7, even without a keyboard.

Connectivity

Lenovo has included a microSD slot - even if this isn't apparent at first. The micro SD can be inserted into a tray that you can open up with a SIM tool or a paper clip.

There are no Type A USB ports, only Type C including DisplayPort 1.2 and PowerDelivery 3.0. While the UBS standard is 3.0 according to the technical specifications, the device manager displays USB C 3.1.

We used our Tohiba Exceria Pro SDXC 64 GB UHS-II reference SD to test the card reader in the Lenovo Yoga Duet. We measured a maximum transfer rate of 73 MB/s when copying jpg image data (each around 5 MB large). The AS SSD test results in a slightly higher rate. Overall, the speed is decent but not the best.

The Intel Wi-Fi 6 AX201 speeds are slightly below average, at least when receiving. We repeated the test in order to exclude any temporary issues.

Webcam

Neither of the two cameras offer a particularly impressive resolution (both 2592x1458) but at least they have a good focus. Nonetheless, image noise is still noticeable, even on pictures taken in daylight.

Videos turn out well at maximum resolution (CPU utilization 40%), but focusing is a little slow, which becomes noticeable when the camera moves.

As there is no difference in image quality nor in DeltaE results (day and night), we assume that the front and back camera are both equipped with the same CMOS chip.

Remember that this device also features face recognition with Windows Hello. This works with the in-built infrared camera, which records three-dimensional structures together with the webcam.

Lenovo has included a small battery for this feature. The keyboard can be used wirelessly up to a distance of around 10 meters.

The keys have a clear stop, a short travel and they are relatively dull without a concave curvature. The keyboard has three-level backlighting. Feedback when typing is limited and the keys make moderate noise. All in all, this is a keyboard that is suitable for everyday use and can be used for fast typing, but that isn't quite convincing in terms of feedback. We were definitely happy with the layout of the large keys that are all positioned in their standard places.

Lenovo has added several special functions that occupy the top keyboard row. You have to press the Fn key to access the F function. One of the special keys deactivates the microphone, one logs you out of Windows. Another opens up the calculator while the next one opens the snipping tool. Lenovo Vantage is also accessible via one of these keys, which can be used to find updates or check the warranty. Finally, users can see all the open tasks by clicking on another key. The 13-inch 3K panel has a resolution of 2160 x 1350 pixels (196 PPI) and a 16:10 format. Its average brightness is 411 nits and 450 nits in the center of the screen. This is very bright. Brightness is not impacted by the device running on battery.

The display also offers very good blacks with no backlight bleeding visible to the naked eye (even with the camera's shutter speed set to 1 second). That's black as it should be - and explains the contrast ratio of 2045:1.

The screen functions without pulse-width modulation (PWM). However, the response rates are slow. This should not be a real issue for office users.

The Delta E value (color precision) is not particularly good with a result of 6.6 ex-works. The grayscales show a significant beige cast in all segments. This can be dealt with by calibrating the display with the color spectrometer, which reduces the DeltaE values to 1.0 (grayscales) and 1.1 instead of 4.1 (colors). The color cast is no longer visible after calibration.

The Duet 7 covers 98 percent of the sRGB color space. The Dell Latitude 7200 and ThinkPad X1 Tablet G3 can do this too and Microsoft's Surface Pro 7 isn't far behind.

The screen's glare doesn't make using the device outdoors easy, although the high brightness does a lot to improve the situation and makes the Duet 7 usable in most scenarios outdoors. Our photos show the display in slightly cloudy weather.

The viewing angles are very typical for an IPS display and remain good even at very wide angles.

Performance

Lenovo has equipped its Duet 7 with a cooled Intel Core i5-10210U (4x 1.60 GHz). Another configuration option is the i7-10510U (4x 1.80 GHz), which also comes with an SSD with double the capacity (512 GB). RAM remains the same at 8 GB.

The hardware is made for office users, not for people who regularly do intensive image processing or 3D modelling. The CPU is too week for such applications.

Processor

The Intel Core i5-10210U is an energy-efficient 15-Watt model that offers a very high turbo clock rate. At least in theory, it can reach up to 4.2 GHz (max 3.9 GHz when all 4 cores are running). Thanks to hyper threading, the chip can work 8 threads simultaneously.

Do not confuse the i5-10210U with the faster Core i5-10510U. The latter has more L3 Cache (6 vs. 8 MB).

With the right cooling system, a i5-10210U can score up to 700 points in the Cinebench R15 - and that's the average. The Duet 7 doesn't reach this level of performance; we measured an average of 563 points, which is around 20 percent less. However, you can't really compare this SoC in a notebook with a flat tablet. Taking this difference into consideration, the i5-10210U actually does a good job that definitely fulfils its specifications. Put differently: Other devices with the chip don't offer better performance either. A Lenovo ThinkPad L13 Yoga, for example, only reaches 506 points.

You can take a look at the CineBench R15 (which runs in a loop for 15 to 30 minutes) results in detail in the diagram.The usual spike at the beginning flattens out more slowly than on other devices. In other words: The Yoga Duet 7 13IML05 uses the turbo clock rate intensively and continuously.

The Logfile from HWinfo confirms this. The average clock rate is 1850 MHz on all cores. Reminder: The base clock rate is 1.60 GHz.

System Performance

The system performance is average according to PCMark 10. The Duet 7 is on par with its competition in all areas. Only the Microsoft Surface Pro 7 Core i5-1035G4 manages to set itself apart by doing up to 11 percent better in every sub group.

DPC latencies

The system seems not to be suitable for real-time applications such as audio. We measured high latencies that are created both by the network driver and by the DirectX kernel.

Storage Device

The UMIS SSD (model: RPJTJ256MEE1OWX) does a fairly good job and scores record results when reading and writing large blocks of data.

Graphics

The UHD Graphics 620 is an integrated graphics chip for basic applications and also functions as video support when decoding. Its test results are modest at best with some benchmarks not delivering any results at all. Other devices show that a UHD Graphics 620 can actually reach better results (up to +10%) even in a thin tablet (ThinkPad X1 Tablet G3). However, that all is just a drop in the ocean and doesn't make the iGPU a high-performance solution.

Gaming Performance

The performance when gaming is as one would expect from this graphics unit - subpar in all games. We suspect that this bad performance is caused by the low clock rates, as they are 30 percent below the values of an average UHD Graphics 620. Again, this value is based on notebooks that have more cooling capacity. In short: Gaming is not an option.

Emissions

System Noise

The system noise is low - actually it is very low. The Duet 7 has an active cooling fan, but it only ever produces 30 dB(A) max. That is hardly audible in an office surrounding. The fan doesn't even turn on while idling. The ThinkPad X1 makes more noise while Dell's Latitude 7200 is similarly quiet.

Temperature

The surface of the device remains cool despite the inactive fan while idling. The average is just about 24 °C, which was 3 °C above room temperature at the time of testing. Only very few devices manage this when their cooling fan is inactive.

The values increase to around 30 °C under load with hot spots reaching a maximum of 34 °C. This already indicates that the temperatures can't be that high on the inside, even during the stress test. The HWinfo log file confirms this: The processor cores are continuously limited to 600 MHz. We use this test, during which we run Prime95 and FurMark simultaneously, to find out how the system deals with extreme load. This isn't an everyday scenario. As the Cinebench loop earlier showed, the chip is definitely able to deliver suitable performance over a long period of time without throttling.

Speakers

The small speakers are hidden in the top area of the tablet, on the right and left of the device. They produce a rather thin sound that is too strong in the mids and basically eradicates all lows. At maximum volume, music basically sounds unacceptable: thin, distorted and unnatural. Instead, the device offers Dolby Atmos headphone sounds. That's a way better alternative and can be accessed either via Bluetooth or via the combined audio jack.

The Dual Array microphones do a good job. Whether you talk from half a meter or from three meters away, voice is recorded at almost the same volume and with very little noise. Overall, voice still sounds rather hard and not quite natural. It's acceptable for conferences, though, where clarity is more important than sounding natural.

Energy Management

Power Consumption

The power consumption is particularly low even compared to tablets that are already very energy-efficient. These low values are especially noticeable under load and during the stress test. The Duet 7 only requires about half of what the competition consumes. Strong throttling might explain this during the stress test, but not under normal load. The latter was calculated with the 3DMark 06, which mainly stresses the iGPU, which is rather weak in this device. This is the reason for the 20.5 W consumption rate. CineBench R15 Multi increases consumption to 42 Watt.

Battery Life

The battery has a capacity of 39 Wh, which is not a lot lower than that of the competition. Only the Surface Pro 7 offers 45 Wh. Despite its low power consumption, battery life isn't the best. However, you can only compare a A12Z Bionic Apple processor to an Intel chip to a limited extent. If you take Apple out of the comparison, the Duet 7 does fairly well.

For everyday use, this means that you will get through a work day with one battery load provided you set the brightness to 150 nits and don't continuously render 3D models.

Verdict

The Lenovo Yoga Duet 7 13IML05 really puts pressure on Microsoft's Surface Pro 7. We have nothing to complain about the stable, high-quality case or the high-contrast display with sRGB coverage.

Despite having a cooling fan, the tablet remains quiet or silent (idle) at all times. Its performance fulfils our expectations for this SoC and there is no noticeable throttling under continuous load. Only the iGPU performance is below average, so gaming won't be an option on this tablet.

The Bluetooth keyboard with a battery is a cool addition, although users will probably spend most of their time using the virtual keyboard on the screen. Lenovo has managed to make space for a microSD card reader. The tablet also features the fastest WIFi chip currently available as well as an IR camera for Windows Hello face recognition.

The Lenovo Yoga Duet 7 13IML05 is available for around $1600. This certainly doesn't give you a Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Tablet G3 or Latitude 7200 2-in-1, which are both still equipped with the older Kaby Lake hardware. The closest competitor in terms of price is Microsoft's Surface Pro 7 (Core i5-1035G4, 256 GB).

Microsoft offers better face recognition, higher resolution, a battery that lasts an hour longer (WiFi test), better cameras and a USB Type A port. Its SoC is just as fast but gets by without a fan (i5 version). Lenovo's Yoga Duet 7 on the other hand has more ports (albeit only USB Type-C), a better contrast ratio and it remains cooler. All in all: Microsoft wins.

Assignment 12 First Draft: I’m Scared And You Should Be Too

The chapter starts with a quote by Justin Trudeau, the Canadian Prime Minister, who said “No country would find 173 billion barrels of oil in the ground and just leave them there” (Lewis and Maslin 368). I wondered, why not? Why are we so conditioned to just continue to take and take with the assumption that because no human has laid their claim on it, that we have the right to take it? It seems unjust to me that we find ourselves so superior to all other life on earth.

This chapter outlines that there are “three possible futures: continued development of the consumer capitalist mode of living towards greater complexity; a collapse; or a new mode of living” (Lewis and Maslin 2018, 369). I personally hope we choose the third route, since the first one is unsustainable for our lives to continue, and the second implies death of the human race. The third option implies that what we spend our time doing would effectively change, and so would our planetary impacts.

Business as Usual

Historically, human societies have been adaptive to change, and this leads the authors to believe that we will continue with business as usual, relying on innovation and technological advancement to save us from the inconvenience of change. The book cites three major reason why the current mode of living is unlikely to continue:

Positive feedback loops (problems building on more problems) drive the current system and end in fundamental changes.

The energy, information and collective human agency factors that underlie all human societies are changing at exponential rates.

There are core environmental challenges which may cause collapse.

The second reason stands out prominently. The world is more interconnected now than it has ever been, and it is easier for communication to have a farther reach. This suggests that greater numbers of people are able to take collective action than at any other time in history, and collective action often incites change. With more people and more connection, more ideas are produced. However, the ideas being produced currently are those which allow us to continue to live how we want to with no environmental consequence. These are ideas like green energy, which are meant to provide an infinite source of energy for people to continue consuming. Consumption is inherently unsustainable and can cause collapse at high levels. These are the consequences of the exponential growth we are experiencing.

Collapse?

This begs the question, are we doomed for collapse? It seems that the greater power than humans have across the world, the greater the opportunity for such power to be damaging (Lewis and Maslin 2018, 378). As humans gain power, they also gain access to more technology and resources which have the capacity to ruin us. This is seen with our own country relying on “cheap” fuels to power us and keep us “efficient.” I quote these words because obviously coal is not cheap, when the full costs are considered and the efficiency of our country relies on cheap labor that laborers rarely reap the benefits of.

The book suggests that this is not even our biggest threat. “The central, pressing, existential threat to human civilization results from a core contradiction in today’s mode of living: it is powered by energy sources that are undermining the ability of today’s globally integrated network of cultures to persist” (Lewis and Maslin 2018, 378). Fossil fuels are considered a trap for progress because of the obstacles their emissions cause: climate change. “The rate and magnitude of climate change are closely correlated with the cumulative emissions of carbon dioxide” (Lewis and Maslin 2018, 379). But it’s not really the CO2 destroying the planet, it’s us. We emit the CO2 and are addicted to fossil fuels. This addiction must cease to exist in order for us to survive.

A huge problem lies in what our leaders are telling us, which is different everywhere. In some places, there is a huge shift to green energy and lowering of individual and collective footprints. In other places, this is a niche “belief” of some sort. It also is confusing when there is no real physical marker for the change, since our leaders are preaching that we limit our atmospheric warming from 1.5ºC to 2ºC. It’s hard to track something we are avoiding, I think. It would be much better for leaders to try and lower the current warming, rather than stick to the status quo. Especially because these proposed metrics are too high in some areas of the world for survival.

But as the chapter shows, event the current proposals are quite hard to reach, and will require “halving global greenhouse gas emissions in every decade going forward, doubling the share of renewables in the energy system every five years, ending deforestation, and reconfiguring agriculture and our diets (so we eat less beef and more plants)” (Lewis and Maslin 2018, 382).

Though we need to ban the use of fossil fuels everywhere, the only part I disagree with here is relying too heavily on green energy, because the configuration and support systems of the current green energy models still rely heavily on fossil fuels. Countries also don’t necessarily want to make the switch to clean energy because it costs more and does the same, if not a worse, job at providing livelihood. Fossil fuels have been long subsidized and these subsidies are hard to lift due to nationalization, that is, the state-owned oil companies make money for the governments that own them. Additionally, this plan overall is highly ambitious and requires all societies “to place the eradication of greenhouse gas emissions at the same level of importance as the pursuit of economic growth” (Lewis and Maslin 2018, 382). I wonder if this is truly possible is our ever growing capitalist society.

It is clear that the mode of living must change to avoid climate change and collapse. Otherwise, human societies will be unable to manage the consequences, and we will die. These consequences include, but are not limited to, food shortage (which will occur as a result of unpredictable climate ruining crops and our GMOs and pesticides have ruined the soil in irreversible ways), unlivable habitats (due to flooding as a result of sea level rise and unbearable heat), and of course civil unrest. The pentagon sees climate change as a threat multiplier, which means that the problems that already exist in our world will be exacerbated on unprecedented levels.

Equality is Necessary

I have long been weary of the communist socialist arguments toward climate change, thinking that agendas are being pushed that are unfavorable. However, I have come to realize that I have been privileged and conditioned to believe that capitalism is good because it has served me. I have been conditioned to believe that more is better.

Capitalism serves this message on a silver platter and has corrupted the human value system. In order to create a new mode of living, equality must exist in a variety of ways. Policies must limit climate change to avoid human suffering; we must focus on the human experience of all people, everywhere, and give value to their lives as well as our own. Everyone should also have access to information and education which will provide a more diverse global community to engage in collective action. Everyone in the global community should have access to healthy food; this should be a basic human right that is focused on more intently because food production currently is unbalanced and results in too much waste.

The unequal balance of economic power has historically favored the progress of the West and worsened the development of the global East. However, both East and West must work together to solve the climate crisis. The West has a larger debt to pay in this task because our emissions make up almost 100% of the emissions in the atmosphere. This was an interesting point since the textbook has repeatedly blamed poverty for rising temperatures. However, the West is hesitant to accept this reality, which presents a great challenge. The West is seemingly dependent on the East for resources, and they have become dependent on us for labor. This codependent relationship, as with any codependent relationship, is toxic and does not benefit either in the long-run. One way to reduce this dependency is with Universal Basic Income (UBI), which supports subsistence needs and covers healthcare. There would be no obligation to work, which would create an increase in autonomy and education. Equality is always a future aspiration, but it really shouldn’t be. We (the west) consume on irrational levels, so much that if global consumption was equal to that of the West, we would essentially be feeding the demand for 32 Billion people; this is impossible.

It doesn’t help that the most comprehensive international document to date, the Paris Climate Agreement, has no clear penalties for countries who do not perform their pledged actions. This is so commonly a reason why nothing ever changes; there are no consequences for the status quo! If the Paris agreement is truly implemented, the world will be transformed in ways that very few people understand or desire. Fossil fuel emissions won’t really be cut to zero, but rather managed in ways that aren’t truly sustainable and put a sort of band aid over the real issues.

The Stories We Tell Ourselves

The current story around climate action is that cutting fossil fuel emissions to zero is all good. However, the proposed methods of doing so are actually quite harmful to biodiversity and only exist to serve human nature. It is a convenient story which allows us to phase out of harmful choices, placing a large amount of ownness on the individual, rather than directly correlating the damage to fossil fuel industries. Using economic solutions to paint a picture of the future is ineffective because people exist in the physical state and numbers exist in the hypothetical. Policy-makers are relying on the economic story that is constantly told, that we have to phase into a greener world, and that story is destructive to progress. It doesn’t accurately highlight the severity of the issues.

Something I also did not agree with in this chapter is the part about the materials revolution. While I think this type of revolution is definitely necessary, it still supports the culture of consumption, especially a centered reliance on recycling. Recycling is the least productive of the 4 R’s and requires a large amount of energy, which is exactly what we are trying to avoid. Rather than focusing on the elimination of waste or the recycling of waste, I think we should be focusing on the elimination of production of wasteful products. If we create products that people can reuse over and over again, then recycling ceases to be necessary. The story of recycling is damaging and continues to perpetuate environmental issues.

Another story we tend to tell ourselves is that of “deserving.” We say, “I’ve been active all week, I deserve an ice cream cone,” or “I have been studying all day, I deserve to watch a movie,” and especially “I have worked so hard, I deserve a vacation.” UBI, as mentioned above, breaks the link between work and consumption, which in turn lessens environmental impact. It does this by giving money with no expectation of anything in return, and by allowing people a stronger sense of free will. UBI is a controversial idea, but it really shouldn’t be. It has been shown that entrepreneurship, future planning, and environmental benefit increases with UBI; that doesn’t sound so bad.

We also have distanced ourselves from our food, in a way which causes us not to value it. Products are cheap, so they exist in surplus, but the environmental cost is high. Placing cheapness at the center of our perspective on food is damaging because we waste it since we don’t see a high value in it. Yet another story we tell ourselves: food doesn’t matter, and we will always have it. How can that be true when the population is growing and we cannot survive without food? This is just one example of the values that must be transformed in order to create real radical change.

The planet can and will survive without us, but we cannot survive without it. I would like to believe we are experiencing some sort of transformation right now, while we are all stuck in our homes watching the world go on without us. We see pictures of massively lowered levels of pollution, and I hope we are acknowledging our destructive power. This is the first step, which hopefully can move us to transition to greener modes of life and economies. We need to rely less on innovation, and more on going back to basics and looking to nature to help.
