thinking about how oshi no ko last ep should end with “aqua no oshi no ko” line with a bang cuz that would be epic and fitting! and imagine with music and stuff and it’s kana’s line omfg
but that part might be a lil early ksndjdki oh unless they stretch the performance!! which is highly possible. i hope they do! the scenes after that are not very ending worthy imo but if they decide to go past it and i see the van scene (kana’s smile, mem’s realization) then that’s okay too 🤣

onk anime had the chance to do something absolutely crazy at the final episode of season 1. Imagine if they had dropped a cameo of aqua and ruby's father at that last episode when ruby visited her mom's cemetery (that happened in the chapter 72 of the manga)
Not anything else just these panels are enough. hell they do not even need to show his face. Infact it's better if they don't show his face

Oshi no Ko is one of the two series that I regularly followed this season. A lot of my close friends love this series, praise it for how great and suspenseful it is, and it also provided great criticism of the idol and acting industry. Not the first series to do that of course, but it still did an amazing job at it according to them.
But I've decided to hold off from reading the manga and just watch the anime to see if it's interesting enough to make me pick up the manga.
(This is a review post from an anime-only watcher, please note that these thoughts are formed based on the anime only and not the manga. This is also just me articulating my thoughts about Oshi no Ko, so please take it with a grain of salt.)
If you ask what show I generally recommend between the two shows I watched this season, I would recommend Oshi no Ko first and foremost because the other series I watched was just a personal favorite of mine, not a series that's "objectively good".
So, does that mean Oshi no Ko is objectively a good series? So far, I think so. I have only watched the anime, and Season 1 of Oshi no Ko feels more like a setup season than anything, but I think it was pretty good. Be alarmed that it has a lot of sensitive topics to deal with such as teenage pregnancy, cyberbullying, suicide, and stuff like that, and I have a feeling that there will be more sensitive topics to come in the future. So, this is recommended for people who can handle such topics with a clear head.
It's worth noting that the first episode has more than an hour in length, so get comfy before start jumping in. It's also more of a setup to the plotline. I think the series succeeded in making me care for Ai in such a short amount of time. I'm a fan of how they handled the whole "character is dead but their existence is so relevant to the plot that they will still haunt the narrative long after their death" thing. The way how Ai still haunts the plot and the entire narrative even though she's no longer in the story anymore is pretty good.
Maybe because I am still kinda annoyed at how Tantei wa Mou, Shindeiru handled such a plotline (I only watched the anime), where the series just kept on lingering on flashbacks about the dead main heroine, and in the end, she ended up being brought back but in another character's body and didn't actually die. What intrigued me about watching that series in the first place was how they handled a main character who died and kept haunting the narrative, and how other characters coped with that. But yeah, Tantei was Mou Shindeiru didn't do that part very well and the main heroine who actually had died somehow is not dead, and that feels like a cop-out. Glad Oshi no Ko isn't like that and handled that aspect pretty well.
But if I have to admit something, I don't feel too invested in Oshi no Ko even after I finished watching the anime. Is it because Ai is no longer there? I'm not sure. The characters are all great but I don't have as strong feelings about them. For the record, Akane is my most favorite character (other than Ai) and I think her arc was pretty great, but after that's done she never appears again until the last episode and my strong feelings about her slowly fade away. Kana is also pretty good and while I do like her character arc, I also feel just "okay" about her. Mem-cho doesn't get to appear much as I hoped, we get to know a bit of her but then she gets sidelined. Ruby unfortunately doesn't get many moments to shine until late in the story (and even then the focus of the later half is still Kana) compared to her big brother. Aqua is a strange character, I like him but that's about it.
I'm also not too crazy about the romance subplot happening between Aqua & Kana, and Aqua & Akane. I'm rooting for Akane and all, but the romance aspects still feel kind of forced. It's my major gripe of the series so far, to be honest. I am never a fan of the love triangle/harem plot. I can excuse it if it's good/reasonable enough for me, but so far the love triangle between Aqua and Kana + Akane has been very forced. Aqua is too focused on the revenge plot to even think about such a relationship. Akane and Kana being set to perform together in one stage play (possibly alongside Aqua too) just adds fuel to the fire. I probably can overlook how forced it is if it's not one of the primary focuses of the show, but it IS, sometimes it's kind of shoved to my face, so...yeah.
I feel like I'm more into the series when it's focusing on industry criticism (the Ai arc, Kana acting arc, and the Reality Dating Show arc) than the idol arc happening near the end.
I still think the first season hasn't even covered the best parts of the series--it feels more like a setup season than anything. I heard the upcoming arc in season 2 is going to be great, so looking forward to that. All that said, the anime, unfortunately, doesn't convince me enough to pick up the source material, but some of my friends tell me to read the manga so...I guess I'll try.
So, Oshi no Ko is great. Maybe it's a show that you'll enjoy too just like most people did. I'm just not too hooked on it as much as my friends are...not yet, at least. Maybe when season 2 is released and finally adapts some great moments like how people anticipate it, that's probably when I can get excited and invested in it. I still recommend you to watch this show more than the other show that I watched this season. Just be mindful that this series will frequently handle sensitive topics, so you better approach with a clear head.

chapter 144 thoughts!
I don't think any other chapter of Oshi no Ko has ever baffled and confounded me quite like this one. Viewed solely in isolation this is a perfectly fine, functional chapter but as the followup to 143 and everything it contained, I actually feel like I'm losing my mind a bit. 143 might as well not have happened for all the weight it's given in this chapter. Ruby is not remotely acting like a girl who just tongued her crush of 18 years and in general, the total absence of any reference or cushioning of the shock of that event is just so loud and so jarring and so completely out of touch with how OnK has handled romantic developments in the past.
Both AquAka kisses had at least a scene or two in the chapter immediately following of characters reacting to and reflecting on both the event itself and the status quo change it represents in the relationship. Even 124 has that scene of Ruby clinging onto Aqua to let the viewer know what the new dynamic between them is going to be from now on. This chapter has nothing of the sort; I wasn't kidding when it says it feels like the kiss never even happened. The only thing I can point to is Ruby's little "we have sensei at home" exchange with Tsukuyomi but that's… kind of just exactly what she would've said even before the kiss. So if it has resulted in absolutely no change to their dynamic that we can see thus far, what was the point in ending the chapter on that note?
The part of me that is cynical and jaded can't help but suspect that this is intentionally hot button reaction bait paced specifically for the purposes of keeping OnK a trendy topic in the lead up to season 2 of the anime airing, But Who's To Say, Really.
I also had my worries about this last chapter, but unless we skip back in time to address it, it really looks like we've skipped over the remainder of the KamiAi romance and everything to do with the early stages of Ai's pregnancy. This is incredibly frustrating to me - they're parts of Ai's story I had been incredibly curious about and was excited to see her thoughts and feelings on, even filtered through fiction. In general, the way the Movie Arc has been increasingly dropping its focus on actually conveying Ai's story has been a real sore point for me. I fully acknowledge this rankles me more than perhaps it should because I am so deeply invested in Ai above any other character but… fuck, man! Once again, remember when this was supposed to be an arc about her? About her inner life, her pain and struggles and Aqua and Ruby working to a better understanding of her? I was excited for the Movie Arc specifically because I thought we were going to get peeks at parts of Ai's life we weren't privy to beforehand, but at this point it almost feels like Akasaka has just lost interest in following through.
Not only that but… uh, where's that KamiAi breakup scene, Akasaka? The one we were promised during the script reading? That huge I CAN'T LOVE YOU elephant that's been patiently sitting in the room? I can only assume that the 15YL version of this breakup happens after the twins are born or maybe even when Kamiki visited Ai at the hospital the night the kids were born but. What the fuck is even going on here anymore lol. The Oshi no Brainrot discord has been kicking around a joke theory that we were seeing the events of the Movie Arc out of their actual chronological order and it is becoming increasingly less of a joke in my brain because I can't make any sense of its progression otherwise.
oh my god i'm almost 1000 words in and i haven't started talking about the actual point of this chapter yet. god help me.
Anyway, MY SON IS HERE LET'S GO MELT!!!!!!
Ngl, I've always been a little disappointed that we didn't see much more of Melt in this arc, both just because I like him and because I think there's some really interesting potential in drawing on the parallels between Melt and Kamiki. I'm not the first to point out that Melt's experience with a dubiously consensual sexual encounter at the hands of an upperclassman - when he wasn't that much older than Hikaru was when Airi began abusing him - echoes at least in spirit Kamiki's experiences as a CSA victim; both were young boys, noted to be pretty and desirable, who were taken advantage of by older female figures. I think it would be extremely interesting and a great character moment for Melt to have some degree of engagement with that material and maybe to have some thoughts about it. It feels like a little bit of a missed opportunity to pass up on that, but I also acknowledge that Melt is ultimately not a huge mover and shaker in the overall story and I don't know how that would've fit into the Movie Arc as it stands, so I'll just have to make eyes at the AO3 tag and hope someone writes a fic about it.
Anyway as a lot of people predicted… here's Ruby being a jackass to Melt about his performance!!! Joking aside, I will admit it's a little jarring to see Ruby being so hostile to Melt over this…? Gorou is a sore spot for her, obviously and she would undoubtedly have high standards for his role in the movie. In addition, Ruby being snitty with people who rub her the wrong way definitely isn't new for her, but it still feels kind of odd both coming off her own struggles to connect with Ai through acting and her little "holy shit other people have feelings" breakthrough in the wake of the RBKN fight for her to be like this about it. I do think this is mostly just supposed to be just goofs and I'm overthinking it, it was just one of those things that kind of gave me pause as I was reading.
ruby's little little princess shirt is really good though, as is her referring to herself as a fan of the 'original work'. both of those got a solid sensible chuckle out of me.
Another thing that gave me pause for a very different reason was Melt and Ruby's exchange about his little merch pin. First and foremost, I think this is a really good Melt moment; while we saw him busting his ass to improve his acting in Tokyo Blade, that was very much when he had something to prove. Here, he really does seem to be going above and beyond for what is basically a bit part purely out of a desire to improve his craft and a passion for acting overall. It's nice to see the story double down in this being a lesson he did properly take away from Sweet Today and that he has committed to acting upon it (no pun intended) in the long term, not just when under outside pressure to do so.
The other thing that jumped out to me about this exchange is that… technically speaking, both Ruby and Melt are wrong, here? It's a very nice, flowery description of Gorou and it certainly lines up with his more positive traits but the idea of him not wearing his Ai merch in front of Ai herself is actually incorrect. Gorou is depicted (in the anime, anyway) as openly wearing the charm at what's implied to be all times, even in front of Ai herself. The manga also implies by way of where the charm is on his person when Ruby finds his body that this is also the case in that version of events, too. I don't think it's a retcon and may be an unimportant detail in the grand scheme of things but it did pique my interest.
There's a few ways to take this, I think; a more positive spin is that this is in line with what the story wants us to take away from 15 Year Lie as a production, where the literal granular facts of its events are sometimes less important than and can be bent in favour of supporting the emotional narrative it wants to convey. Melt may not literally be correct here, but he at least achieves the spirit of the right answer in his efforts. "Lies are love", after all.
However, given that Ruby enthusiastically endorses this interpretation - and is thus wrong alongside Melt - this could potentially be an indication of there being cracks in Ruby's rose-tinted view of Gorou. This strikes me as a fascinating idea and one I hope the series plays with; it would follow quite naturally from last chapter's framing of Gorou as Ruby's 'idol' that she's 'gachikoi' for. Oshi no Ko has pretty consistently portrayed the idol/fan relationship as inherently unequal, even when approached with the best of intentions and to truly know someone, you must let them off their pedestal first. She has sort of begun this process with Ai, just through empathizing with her during the 15YL production but we have yet to see anything similar happen with Gorou - if anything, we see the opposite here, where she asserts herself as the authority on Gorou's character as if she has the final say on who he was and what he felt and thought.
But the thing is, how well can Ruby really say that she knew him? They were only in each others' lives for a few months and in that time, she was only exposed to a very narrow slice of his life and his personality. Hell, you could even argue that Akane knows more about Gorou than Ruby does, given that we have no indication that Ruby or Sarina was ever privy to the details of his birth and his home life. Again, it's entirely possible that I'm reading too much into this, but now the idea is in my brain I'm simmering on it a bit. If nothing else, I hope the series takes the time to prod and poke at this angle, especially now it has made the fan/idol aspect of this dynamic explicit and textual.
Ruby and Melt's little senpai/kouhai dynamic has the potential to be really cute and I do hope the series actually spends some time on it. I've always thought a RBML friendship could be really fun to watch play out and seeing Melt gain some confidence in himself by teaching someone else could be really great. But with how unfocused the Movie Arc has been, it's really hard to get my hopes up that we'll be sticking with this even past this chapter lol
oh hey there crow girl we thought you were dead
Surprisingly, I don't have a lot to really say about her little lore drop here, since it's mostly mystery boxing and implications and, man. It's been 69 (nice) chapters since she first started showing up ominously muttering about supernatural things and while I don't mind her presence and I think she's evolved into a fun character, it's a little hard for me to get interested in these little supernatural tidbits until they resolve into something that feels meaningful for the characters.
This isn't helped by the fact that we don't really know what kami means in the context she uses it here. While 'god' and 'gods' are not strictly incorrect as translations, I think an English speaking viewer is primed to think of Abrahamic, capital G-Gods, which isn't necessarily correct. The term kami is a catchall that covers all manner of things from divinities to venerated earthbound humans, so kami can perhaps best be understood as being an umbrella term for something like 'an otherworldly being', which I think better lines up with Tsukuyomi's assertion that those who have memories of past lives are like kami in of themselves.
Ultimately though until we know what kami really means and amounts to in Oshi no Ko, it's hard to say what this means for the characters and I am ultimately only really interested in the characters. So until we know what this actually amounts to in-story, I'm just kind of nodding long with whatever Crow Girl says because sure. This might as well happen.
can we talk about how fucking funny her anime antagonist jump out of the tree was, by the way
break next week, or so i've heard... one of these days, we'll beat the allegations....

ONK Chapter 147 Spoilers
Tumblr media
Queen behavior. How does she manage to be so good in such a lousy manga 😭
I've been following OnK veeeeeery loosely lately but I find it hilarious that Akane hasn't only been keeping an eye on Aqua's moves, she has also been following Kamiki. Since all of that has been off-paneled, I wonder if we'll one day just have Akane reveal that she already figured out that Aqua is Goro's reincarnation lmao
Tumblr media
Considering that the movies show Doctor A dying in the same forest where Akane and Ruby find Goro's body, Akane should be able to tell that this is the same doctor Aqua told her about.
Tumblr media
Except now she would also know that he died on the same night Aqua was born, which means there was absolutely no way for Aqua to have known him at all, least of all so intimately.
This was the missing piece of the puzzle and it's right there in the movie, so here's to hoping Akane has either already put 2 + 2 together off-panel or that she's on her way to do so.
If Akane finally figuring this out is in the cards, I wouldn't be surprised if we get a chapter that parallels Chapter 51 whenever S2 gets around to adapting these particular scenes 😂
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Or he could save the parallel for whenever these scenes get adapted, since Chapter 51 will probably get its anime counterpart pretty early into the season.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
All in all though this is the second time Akane and Kamiki have had contact with each other, I hope that Aka won't deny us of a proper confrontation eventually 😭

Villareal Household: Chapter 5, Part 6
In this part Devin becomes a regular for season 2 of ZBB: Apocalypse Rising. Back home the stay over continues, as does Rilian being a picky eater. Lastly Devin prepares to host a picnic.
Tumblr media
For ease of reading if the toddlers are trying to say real words I'll put the English in brackets when they do not use the whole word. Luna (mummy) and Devin (mama) use some German and Italian.
Schatz (German) meaning treasure Schnucki (German) meaning sweetie but doesn't have an exact translation Bambino/s (Italian) meaning male child/children Amore (Italian) meaning love Piccolo (Italian) meaning little one Caro (Italian) meaning dear Tante/Onkel (German) meaning aunt/uncle
Luna: Shooting day, exciting
Devin: It always is! I’m go glad Norah hired me for another season, she’s such fun to work with. You’re not working today right?
Luna: Nope! I’ll be trying to focus on improving my research skill, I want this next promotion
Early riser Alfred is up early so Devin potty trains him while Luna eats. Afterwards Luna carries Alfred to his high chair for breakfast. Devin wakes up Rilian and tries again to coach him on the potty. He has an accident anyway.
Tumblr media
Devin: Come on Rillian, breakfast time
Rilian: No mama, me no carry (I do not want to be carried)
Devi: Sorry caro but mama has to be on set by midday, we don’t have time for you to walk yourself
Rilian pouts and grumbles the entire way.
Devin: See, we have nice cereal
Rilian: *hums to self, ignores cereal*
Devin: Come on caro, at least try some before you turn it down
Tumblr media
Rilian: food uck uck (yuck yuck)
Max: What’s going on in here
Devin: We’re refusing to eat our breakfast
Max: That’s it buddy, rebel against the system
Rilian: Onk Max si si *giggles* (Onkel Max silly)
Devin: Thanks for the support
Max: It’s what I’m here for
Eventually Rilian empties his bowl and sings Devin a song about food, getting none of the food words right.
Tumblr media
Devin and Rilian walk to where Alfred is playing on the tablet by Luna who is debating the mirror again.
Devin: Now bambinos mama has to go but mama will be back, promise
Rilian: Mama play?
After a rousing play session Devin is almost out the door when Alfred requests a hug
Alfred: Bye bye mama, me love
Devin: Is that a sentence
Luna: As a professor of language I can assure you, it was not a sentence. At least, not yet
Devin: You two keep working on talking while I’m out. Te amo amore, back later
Tumblr media
Rudolphus: Why are we doing this zombie show again
Devin: We need to pay rent
Rudolphus: Like you pay rent
Devin: I pay property taxes. Plus Norah asked
Emily: Oh gosh, they did not take good photos for continuity last time, who was even running this department
Devin: Can you find the costume
Emily: I think so, just be careful with it. If you’re becoming a regular I’ll redo it so it’s more interesting for the camera
Devin: Thank Emily, I’ll try not to dent it when I fall
Emily: That’s not funny
Devin: But there’s a scene where I fall
Emily: *sighs* Of course there is
Tumblr media
Devin: Season 2! How’d you get the network to let me in after my character was killed off
Norah: Honey once you won that award they were happy to let me write you back in
Devin: I missed you Norah. Movie sets weren’t the same without you. So, any notes for how I should play the revival scene
Norah: *sighs*
Devin: Hey, you okay
Norah: This co-star they hired… the only simlish she knows is her lines
Devin: You’re kidding
Norah: I wish I was, thank the watcher we’ve got you
Devin: I’ll go talk to her, she’s got to know hello right?
Tumblr media
Devin: Hello Tadelech, I’m Devin. It’s nice to meet you
Tadelech: It wasn’t the same once the bugs came
Devin: *blanks* Shall we run our lines then
Devin pulls out her script and Tadelech figures out what she means. Despite not knowing simlish to communicate Tadelech is delivering her lines wonderfully, she clearly loves acting.
Tumblr media
Devin: It’s going to be fine. Tadelech knows her lines, that’s all she needs
Norah: I hope so, this show is just so important to me
Devin: Norah your work always speaks for itself, trust me, she can do this and you’ll have quality content
Norah remains dubious but starts filming. First up is Devin’s monologue. In it she recaps what happened on the first season and reveals that her character was merely assumed to be dead. In actuality she’s still alive, kicking and fighting the bugs!
Tumblr media
Devin: Mina Mina Mina, you look a-mina-mazing
Mina: Rudolphus is an artist with the make up. Regular selfie?
Devin: Always
Norah: ACTION
Devin: Listen to me, this isn’t you! The bugs are inside you, changing you
Mina: The only thing that’s changed is I can see you for the coward you are
The two then pull off the choreographed fight sequence, trusting special effects to make it look realistic.
Norah: CUT
Devin breathes a sigh of relief and moves on to the next scene.
Tumblr media
ACTION
Devin picks up the discarded looking guitar and begins to play. They’ll add the proper tune in when it’s edited but she still likes to play what should be played. Then it’s across the stage to where Tadelech waits expectantly. Together they run through the reunion scene, selling that their characters have known each other all along.
CUT
Tumblr media
Final scene of the day leaves Devin’s character in a precarious position. Will she return for a third season? It depends on fan response.
When Devin gets home the twins are excited to see her and begin to babble incoherently.
Devin: Woah woah woah, let’s talk over dinner huh
Luna: Come on schnucki, up we go
Rilian: up mummy up
Devin: Today we’re going to try some delicious peas
Alfred: Why pez (peas)
Luna: To help you both grow big and strong
Tumblr media
Alfred and Rilian babble to each other while the grown ups talk.
Devin: Poor thing didn’t know any simlish
Luna: None at all?
Devin: Technically she knew her lines
Joey: Did she understand what she was saying
Devin: I think so, I mean her acting seemed accurate
Luna: So you did all the scenes they needed you for
Devin: And I got gold because I’m fabulous
Tumblr media
Potty time and neither twin has reached level 2 yet. I know it’s because I have skill difficulty higher than normal, but I do wish I could make the potty skill exempt. Then it’s story time to get the bambinos to sleep, followed by tucking in and kisses. While Luna does some more debate practice, Devin dives into trying to pick up Windenburgish.
Tumblr media
Luna: Did you sleep well
Devin: I did, but I’m pretty excited for today
Luna: Say hi to Cassandra and Charlie for me
Devin: Will do
Luna heads to the garden to harvest where Miriam finds her, I swear Miriam always hangs around the garden. Luna then makes fruit salad for breakfast and chats to her brothers who will be leaving later on today.
Tumblr media
Alfred: Mama what do (what are you doing)
Devin: Just updating my social media. You ready for potty practice
Alfred: Me do, me do, no we (I can do it, don't need to do it as a team)
Rilian: Mama help me
Devin: Since your brother apparently doesn’t need my superior guidance of course I can help you Rilian
They shuffle in to the bathroom and Devin coaches Rilian while Alfred tries by himself. Both methods seem to work as the bambinos reach level 2 potty!
Tumblr media
Devin: Mummy was making breakfast, who wants a lift
Alfred: Me mama, me
Rilian: No no no
Devin: Okay then. Rilian can you keep up
Rilian: Yes. I bob (walk) mama
In the kitchen they all grab plates and begin to eat.
Tumblr media
Luna has headed off to work and Devin begins preparation for todays event, friends kid friendly catch up. She’s making some BLT’s for the guests when the bambinos finish eating and head for the stereo to dance.
Devin: Rilian, caro, did you finish yours
Rilian: *pulls cheeky face* yes mama
Devin: Good job
Alfred: Rili not-
Rilian: Shh Alfe, shhh
Tumblr media
Lastly Devin makes some lemonade in case anyone wants it. Rilian and Alfred are pretty happy with the yard, now full of toddler toys after Devin’s latest paycheck cleared. They hug in excitement. The guests arrive! Devin’s BFF’s Cassandra and Charlie. Cassandra brought Savannah and Mercedes (friendly reminder they’re around *checks* five and a half, while Devin’s bambinos are 3 and a quarter today). Charlie not having human children brought her furbaby Clover.
Tumblr media
Alfred: Hi
Mercedes: Who are you
Alfred: Me is Alfred
Devin: Thanks for coming over
Cassandra: Of course, we haven’t had a hangout with just us three in ages
Charlie: Are we just going to ignore the kids
Cassandra: My girls can entertain themselves, mostly…
Devin: So long as I can keep eyeline with the pond, everyone should be fine to amuse themselves
Tumblr media
Alfred continues to try babbling to a more literate Mercedes. Water loving Rilian meanwhile goes and has a splash about in the pond in his gumboots. In the yard Devin settles where she can keep an eye on him, and happily catches up with her best friends.

Sooo! I have decided that from now on, I will be putting in the tags the timeline where the thread is placed. When I began the blog, I wanted it to be placed after chapter 80 of the manga, with Ruby chasing revenge and searching for the assassin of her mother and sensei.
But! There are so many layers of Ruby to explore, so I defined five timelines, each one with a pivotal point about Ruby's character that explores her in different ways. I will decide the timeline depending on what I think fits better to the thread. This will not include her life as Sarina, that has her own verse.
Timeline 1: Welcome to your new life!
Tumblr media
Age: 0-4.
Timeline placed: Before Ai's death.
This timeline explores Ruby's life when she was a toddler. Mostly centered on her little kid shenanigans. How she behaved in the first years of her life, the things she did, her relationship with Ai, and with her annoying twin brother. No problem, no worries, just a little kid exploring life for the first time, having fun, and craving love!
Timeline 2: Learning how to live.
Tumblr media
Age: 4-16
Timeline placed: After Ai's death and before the foundation of the New B-Kmoachi.
This timeline will be more focused on how Ruby' spent most of her childhood, early and middle teens. How she coped with Ai's death, the therapy she went through for a lot of years, Aqua getting distance, her trying to live with Miyako, and the many hobbies she had at that time. It will also show her first steps towards becoming an idol when she was searching for someone to recruit her. What happened in this time is mostly a headcanon of mine, how I think Ruby grew up, the problems she had to face, and why she is the way she is in the present, always with Sarina's ghost following her like a shadow.
Timeline 3: Raising star.
Tumblr media
Age: 16-17
Timeline placed: Between the foundation of the new B-Komachi and learning about Gorou's death and making the decision of getting revenge. So basically chapters 20-80 in the manga or the first season of the anime (and second, probably).
This timeline is about Ruby beginning as an idol. We already have some of it thanks to the manga/anime, the foundation of the group, what they did to start getting attention, and the first concert! But there is so much more to it: the first shows, the first time they got invited to a program, the B-Komachi YouTube challenges, etc. Also, it is an interesting time to explore how Ruby felt as she began to be famous, the challenges that came with being an idol, and show how much she loved being one. Overall, it is a timeline where Ruby is a happy girl finally living her dream!
Timeline 4: Chasing revenge.

Age: 17-18
Timeline placed: After deciding to take revenge on the assassin of her family but before learning that Gorou's is Aqua (so… before manga chapter 123).
So this is basically the timeline I have tried to stick to until now and will most likely be the timeline where most threads take place. This is the dark!Ruby timeline. Her just living for revenge, and the painful memories of Sarina are more present than ever. She is not an innocent pure idol anymore, she is someone who will do anything to be more famous and find the one who killed her Mama and Sensei. Fake smiles, fake love, a broken heart, and no joy at all. This timeline is the most likely to have darker themes because is essentially a girl wanting to kill someone, and willing to do anything to achieve that goal.
Timeline 5: Who are you?
Tumblr media
Age: 18 and beyond.
Timeline placed: After finding out Aqua is Gorou… sort of. Manga chapter 123 and beyond.
Yes, this timeline is placed after that chapter… but kinda not that much. Of course, I don't know how ONK is going to end and what will be the final resolution of Ruby's arc, so is more or less what I think is going to happen (or what I want to happen). Events may vary. I placed this after chapter 123 because I think that is the perfect time for Ruby to question who she is, what she wants and leave Sarina's ghost behind forever. And that's what this timeline will explore, Ruby trying to find herself and her place in the world.. Just Ruby, not Sarina. Yet, these events won't necessarily happen after Ruby discovers the truth about her brother. What is more, they will probably be after the movie is over, maybe even with Kamiki dead and everything being "all right". Depending on how the manga continues, I might add other timelines.
Important thing: These timelines will only work in verses that follow the story of the manga. If the events of the verse I am working on are very different from the manga and interfere with them, I will not put them. Because the reference will be meaningless. You can't say Ruby is in the timeline where the new B-Komachi is found if there isn't a B-Komachi to be found xD. But I will specify where I think the thread is placed if given the case.
I hope you liked it!

what's your #1 chapter/moment? by character if you're up to writing another essay
"if you're up to writing another essay". you guys know me so well <3
For the sake of not taking like 8 weeks to answer this ask, I'll limit this to just the Hoshinos for now.
Ai: So, my actual fave Ai moment is not from the manga itself so I'll pick my fave manga moment then talk about my actual fave moment. It's fine, she's my favourite so she gets preferential treatment!!!! (saitou behaviour……)
From the manga itself, my favourite Ai moment is her death, believe it or not lol. I'm one of the Oshi no Sickos who think her arc being capped by her death is narratively speaking the perfect conclusion to everything we learn about her life – the entertainment industry ruined every opportunity Ai ever had at a normal life up to and having that conclude with Ai's literal, actual life being taken by an embodiment of the misogyny and violence that's been inflicted on her since she was a child is such a miserable, cathartic bit of tragedy. But moreso than that, what resonates with me so strongly about this moment is how Ai responds to it - or rather, how she fails to respond.
Even though it would make so much sense for her to be bitter or angry or upset, she makes an active choice to spend her last moments alive pouring out love and literally spends her last breaths on telling Ruby and Aqua she loves them. It says so, so much about what a deeply kind and incredibly strong person Ai is that she was able to do that.
My actual favourite Ai moment is her conversation with Kyun in Viewpoint B and the reveal that their meeting in the park was so impactful to Ai that it lead her to consider Kyun her closest friend for years afterwards. Like her death, the way Ai goes out of her way to approach Kyun and try to reach out to her speaks so deeply so her kindness and her desire to connect with other people and there's a little part of me that always wonders if maybe if this fleeing friendship had come to pass for real, Ai might have been saved. At the very least, there's something bitterly sweet about knowing that for as alone as Ai was in B-Komachi, she had someone she called a friend even so.
Aqua: Honestly, I love so many Aqua moments, it's hard to pick just one but I will never be over the Piyeon ruse. Aqua was so put out by the girl he has a crush on not talking to him that he dressed as a bodybuilding chicken with a squeaky voice for a week. Literally the most teenage thing any teenager in this series has done. Embarrassing ass kid.
My actual serious answer is Aqua's breakdown during Tokyo Blade - specifically, the 'internal' scenes where he's confronted by both Goro and his younger self. These are so, so important for getting at the core of who Aqua really is and they're honestly bone-chilling to read. Seeing Goro as this malicious, intrusive force who is preventing Aqua from being happy, seeing the words he batters Aqua with and realizing that this is the kind of shit Aqua probably thinks about himself every day honestly kind of turns my stomach a bit! It's clear before this that Aqua struggles with self-hate and self-blame but seeing the sheer extent of it is so horrible.
That this confrontation essentially climaxes in the hallway where Ai died, with Aqua face to face with his younger self, also underlines something that's really fundamental to understanding who Aqua is; at his core, Aqua has never stopped being that little boy covered in his mother's blood. He has, emotionally speaking, never been able to leave that hallway and until he allows himself to do so, he's going to continue self destructing and taking everyone down with him.
It's honestly the scene I'm most excited to see animated... season 2 can't come soon enough!!!
Ruby: Without a doubt it has to be her and Ai's dance practice scene back in volume 1, but especially in the anime's portrayal of it. I think OnK's handling of the past life stuff is at its best in moments like this, where it actually meaningfully engages with what it would mean for someone to carry such deep trauma from their past and how it would continue to affect them going forward. We get little hints of this leading up to it, like Ruby outright saying she's never thought about her future (implicitly because she was aware she would not have one as Sarina) and the way she so enthusiastically gives her all to playing and having fun with other kids at school - because those are things that she never got to do as Sarina. But her dance scene and her thoughts leading up to it really hammer in just how deeply this has affected Ruby - she spends almost three years living with the expectation that at any moment, her body will betray and hurt her for seemingly no reason to the point that it affects how she walks and carries herself moment to moment.
This is also a really good Ai moment for her as a moment and it also highlights something really special about Ai and Ruby's relationship I feel we don't get as much post-timeskip; how genuinely healing and wonderful their connection was for both of them. I've talked before about the running motif of toxic motherhood on Oshi no Ko and how Ai, as a character, is sort of a refutation of the other shitty oshi no moms in the series. Knowing that both Ai and Ruby are victims of toxic mothers, it makes it so deeply, incredibly powerful that these two victims find healing and acceptance in each other and the genuinely loving and supportive mother/daughter bond they have with each other.
The anime's version of this scene is also just easily one of its biggest highlights for me. The gorgeous colours, the overlapping of Sarina and Ruby's voices and the palpable affection Ruby and Ai have for each other... it's just so lovely and it makes me a little teary-eyed every time I watch it. The transformation of Sarina's sorrow into Ruby's joy and empowerment is such an important foundational part of Ruby's arc in the first part of the series and I'm so glad the anime really got it right.
