thinking about the time i watched the departed and was completely unable to follow the plot because i spent the first 60% of the movie thinking that matt damon and leinardo dicaprio were the same person and there was some elaborate double- or triple-crossing going on. for the life of me i cannot tell those two apart

I know Steve wears nikes cause this is a show being produced in the modern day where Nike is the big shoe brand of the era (and also they paid a lot of money to have their shoe brand prominently displayed). But in '83 and before they made the deal with Jordan Nike was not a basketball shoe or that popular with people who weren’t runners, at least not the go to anyway.
I watched Air this weekend with my parents who are both children of the 80s from smallish rural towns in Kentucky and Indiana. My father played basketball, graduated in '85 like Steve, and when he played in high school the team wore converse. I feel like outside of a world where product placement on a TV show decides what characters are wearing, a rich kid like Steve would actually be in Adidas or converse most of the time. But maybe he just likes the arch support.
Unless we're suggesting that Steve was a good enough high school basketball player pre-concussions to get noticed by Nike. Which they did at the time, giving away shoes to high school players to get them to play brand ambassador in high school and college, gambling on them being good enough to make it to the NBA and bringing Nike with them.
