Antagonist!Celestia and Hifumi designs

Got the brainworms and wanted to draw my favorite dr1 pair as if they were in the antagonist role AKA byakuya to DR THH. I made sure to give them a more snooty/royal vibe while maintaining their unique silhouettes.

While they take on that role they have like 90% of the personalities, they just had some things in the past be different.

Celestia lost super hard against someone with the ultimate luck in the past and ever since then has been doing her absolute best to travel around the world (for real this time) gambling big and developing her skills to perfection. In THH she’d be like a breath away from scratching Makoto’s eyes out just because of his talent and the rest of the game would be her making digs at his luck.

She’d “fix” the ch2 murder to be a bit different like byakuya bc she’d find it too brutish and not interesting enough for the killing game.

Whoever does the ch3 plan she’d insult for relying so much on luck, not her, she’s more than that.

In chap 4 she’d break down hard because Makoto would actually start beating her ass in the arguments and she’d have to live out that resentment of losing to an ultimate luckster again.

Hifumi had a breakdown when the creator of princess piggles fell off super hard, he stayed a fan and tried to cheer up that creator. The creator blew up on him and caused Hifumi to go on a bit of a demon arc and long story short with ultimate talent he managed to make a fanfic so good it reinvigorated the love in the series and the creator just gave him the rights. He huffs his own farts even more this time and wants things to be perfect... even murders...

He’d fix ch2 murder because the circumstances are simply too messy for a good show at the trial and uses his storytelling skills to construct a better case.

He’d absolutely hate ch3 because the circumstances regarding it rely too much on coincidence and he’d be annoyingly semi-breaking the 4th wall when uhh bro someone just died.

Ch4 is when he’d fall apart because what he percieved as “the perfect crime” and his perfect deduction that aoi is the killer fall apart in front of him forcing him to recognize the situation they’re in is so much messier and... real.

I intend these to not be the last redesigns, I wanna do hiyoko and kazuichi being defeatist despairful losers for the next one and god complex angie and korekiyo after that :) cheers!

2) what’s your favorite thing about your style? Honestly I think my favorite part of my style is how i draw hair?? idk it looks really good sometimes dshgkjnfh.

4) favorite thing to draw? Faces faces faces dsghjmfnsh. Idk they're just really fun and personally I feel they're the easiest part to do dshgjnfh I love all the details that go into them and drawing them is just really relaxing for me.

9) show us a finished piece right alongside the original sketch: This took a bit of digging because I'm admittedly not great at documenting my sketches but I found the concept sketch from this piece that I'm still REALLY proud of sahjndh. I remember I had just watched the 1993 Mario Bros. movie and was experiencing intense brainrot lmao

most important business is up first! this is the last intensive lwa piece that i intend to produce for the foreseeable future. i burned myself out on drawing the girls way back in dianakko week, and then again last month.

while i (accidentally,,) paced myself for this one, i’m not quite feeling it anymore. i don’t know when i will be next, or frankly if at all. rebounding back into the fandom at all was a big quarantine induced surprise in itself. which is all to say- sorry if you were looking forward to more lwa from me :(

for the moment, i’m posting a whole lotta love live, personal pieces, and likely some other fandoms. please hang around for that if you’re interested!

NOTES:

i am aware that accidentally made diana’s face too ikemen >>; i intended to redraw it every time i popped open the doc, and forgot every single time.

i opted not to use a harsh lighting layer for this! just a gradient overlay (specific layer effect: add). i felt like hard lighting would take away from the cartoony vibe.

the lining took so long. every couple of weeks i’d just pop open the doc, slog through a couple lines, and close it indefinitely. i wanted so badly to not have to deal with the anatomy but we managed it ok bros

a lot of time was also dedicated to cleaning the lines. i’d taken so long to finish it that i figured i might as well make it just, way too polished

i wasn’t sure whether or not to keep the colored lines! i like the version with black lineart just about equally. colored lines feel more polished to me, but maybe it could use the extra contrast haha.

i was very tempted to change the color palettes- particularly in switching diana’s shirt to a blue, like i did with the face paint.

the last image is a reference to a meme that circulated back when the toh episode aired! i’d love to give credit to the original creator, but have completely lost track of it. if anyone recalls the link and can shoot it over that’d be very appreciated :)

lotte is a national treasure and i love her to bits

this is what the bg looks like! i rendered it just enough for it to look full with all the layers up. this was the quickest part of the process hands down- completed it start to finish in ~1.5 hours. because i rendered diakko+lotte in harsh solid lines and shading, i wanted the bg to be soft and fuzzy. ideally the contrast between the foreground and background coloring would be stronger, but i gave up trying to figure that out lol.

the og sketch!! when i was putting together this post, i did a handful of screencap redraws and saw what stuck.

more of those sketches! i liked how diana turned out :^) you can see that i still wasn’t sure how much of the toh style to integrate at this point!

figured i might as well stick the other sketches from diakko week in here as well! the latter two led to this and this respectively. i switched to diana not Doin Too Well with scary movies purely because i thought it was funnier lmao

While my friends fell in love with the guy anime characters, I fell in love with shipping!! (I can never tell them I’m a crazy shipper! They’ll understand crushing over a character, but not obsessing over getting two fictional characters together!!! HAHAHA)

I’ve been shipping since I was a kid. The will they, won’t they aspect is just arrhhgghh!!!! Watching FMA 1 - with EdWin, I know they’re canon now. BUT the pain. THE PAIN. Of that first FMA series. You. Don’t. KNOW. HAHAHAH. Then, to see that they’re actually canon in manga; then in FMA Bro. The betrayal! I was in pain for so many years!!! HAHAHA.

Shipping made me want to learn how to draw. Made me want to learn Japanese. Made me creative. I’m ancient now, doing boring adult things. But I still ship, it’s just become something I do to pass the time HAHAHA!

And still, for over a decade now, it’s the same headache with shipping. So much unnecessary vitriol from people with too much free time on their hands.

Firstly, who the fuck cares if you ship a gay or straight pairing? Good if canon shows us what their preference is. But, come on! Who are we kidding? You think a Japanese shounen manga will ever make their characters gay??? If you think your enemy is some innocent shipper riding on their own delusions on the internet during their free time, maybe while drinking their morning coffee before getting stressed with work, omg you may just be the dumbest person alive. HAHAHA.

Secondly, these poor fem characters!!! The first ship I was ever invested in was 1 x R. And holy cow! The hate on Relena back then. I couldn’t understand it at all. She was annoying sometimes. But, come on! She’s a kid. I thought she was cool honestly. She wasn’t afraid of Heero’s threats. She stood her ground. She fought for peace, for her kingdom. She was so OG.

Then, I realized that the hate was just really from simps of these bishounens. My brain went haywire then. Like - wtf.

It never occurred to me that people could go batshit crazy over a fictional male character. >.<”

Shipping is a fun pastime! It’s a bias! Specific to your tastes! You’ll never be wrong or right, because of the million headcanons that could fill up someone’s imagination. So, just ship and let ship. Haha~!

Do you think I like the thought that in some universe, my ship is actually destined for another??!!!! I. DON’T!!! But, I won’t go bitching about it on your tag and stay in my deluded world hahahah. Unless it’s the Naruto shipping wars. That’s just - it’s just too late for that mess. HAHAHA!

I can’t believe how I would just draw sketches on the back of my scratch papers, as a poor kid. Now, look at me, I bought a tablet with my own money. I’m so proud of myself for not giving up on my dreams. HAHAHA. *pats myself in, you still have a long way ahead of you*

okay sure yes this is fun! i havent posted a thing like this in such a long time. thank you new gal pal @scottspack for tagging me!

pigs????

alright first lets throw it back to preschool! my fav childhood toys were my baby doll (snookums) and a plush pig that my grandma got me that i just called ‘pig’ ...i watched the babe movies countless times, and piglet? that anxious little guy GETS ME bro. when my preschool did a nativity play and my class got to choose an animal to be in baby jesus’ manger, my mother recalls me saying that i would be a pig because jewish people (jesus christ) wouldnt eat me. she has no idea how or when i learned about kosher foods. ironically despite my namesake i was too afraid of the movie charlotte’s web to watch it more than once because the scary farmer tries to kill wilbur for being small and the pretty spider dies.

sugar creek gang

OKAY this is a book series from the 40s-70s about a group of christian little boys in indiana who went on adventures in the woods and helped people. my dad read a LOT of chapter books to me as bedtime stories when i was little (see also the mandie series, nancy drew and the hardy boys, little house on the prairie) but sugar creek gang is one that really hit. i read all 36 books with dad and at least once again on my own. there was a series of 4 or 5 movies in the early 2000s when i was the Perfect age to have a crush on most if not all of them. this might be too much detail but i have to tell you about these boys. we WILL not be revisiting the heavy religious themes.

the narrator is bill who is Good and Kind and wants to be a doctor when he grows up. his best friend is a chubby boy nicknamed poetry because he memorizes and quotes poems, he is the Detective of the group. BIG JIM is the leader of the group who is supposed to be like, 14, which was very cool and hot, to me. and yes there is a little jim, who is the baby of the group. then there is CIRCUS who is known for his climbing and acrobatics, and his FIVE SISTERS AND BEAUTIFUL SINGING VOICE. dreamboy. i’m almost done listing boys, i promise. a boy called dragonfly who is allergic to everything and hella superstitious. later in the series a new boy named tom moves to town and tom has an older brother bob who is NOT A CHRISTIAN (bully)

tangentially, the buttercream gang, a movie from 1992 that was almost definitely made by some christians who grew up reading the sugar creek gang series which i’m guessing on vibes alone. will spare you Good Boy details but scott is in love with his best friend pete who moves to chicago and falls in with a bad crowd and scott just refuses to stop LOVING HIM. very gay christian film in retrospect.

peter pan

so i know liking disney’s peter pan isnt niche, but it was the way i liked it. tinker bell stan from day one, i watched all of those disney fairies movies, even the ones that came out after i was definitely not intended audience. there was an online pixie hollow game where you could design your own fairies and play mini games where you gathered dew drops or something. had a HUGE CRUSH on jeremy sumpter in peter pan (2003) then i got really darkly obsessed with the idea of growing up when i was 12 or 13, and everything peter pan was deeply My Shit for my entire adolescence. i read the original book and every other twisted version of the story i could find and seriously freaked myself out about wasting my youth.

shug

you’ve probably heard of jenny han now, or at least the netflix adaptations for to all the boys i’ve loved before and the sequel ps i still love you (always and forever, lara jean, coming soon?) but before she wrote THOSE, she wrote my first ever Favorite Book, about annemarie “shug” wilcox, a girl in the summer before starting middle school. it is SO engraved on my heart i cannot explain. i felt so incredibly understood and cant even tell you how many times i read it. thinking about all of the ways it made me feel SEEN is actually making me very tender so i’m gonna go on.

the summer series

on the subject of jenny han, since she was now my Favorite author, when she came out with the summer i turned pretty in 2009, i was ALL IN. it’s not summer without you, and we’ll always have summer were published the next two years. a coming of age series about a girl isabel “belly” conklin who stays at her mother’s best friend's house at the beach in the summers. i really could talk about it forever yall. i actually dont know how to be succinct about it. i will try. her mom’s friend has TWO BOYS. one brother, jeremiah, is the golden boy and her best friend who is in love with her! the older one CONRAD is her childhood crush who's just sort of around while belly is firmly getting over her childish feelings and going out and experiencing teen beach life with jeremiah for the first time and figuring out who she is and wants to be! by the end of the summer he admits he feels differently about her (hence belly internalizing this as The Summer I Turned Pretty) and they get together. this is already too much so i will just say that the next two books deal with a PROFOUND LOSS and the selfishness of grief and the SELFLESSNESS OF CONRAD and i will absolutely lose my shit if netflix picks it up for a second jenny han series adaptation.

pappyland

this was a kids show in the 90′s that features a character named Pappy Drew-It, an artist dressed like a 49er who lives in a magic cabin in pappyland. there’s tons of characters and music and life lessons but the meat of every episode is a detailed drawing how-to (pappy is actually a cartoonist, michael cariglio) and i have a hard back cover sketch book from my grandpa that i FILLED with drawings that pappy and DOODLEBUG taught me to do. there is a running gag that pappy always breaks his crayons.

boy meets world

i KNOW this is beloved by many but i’m counting it because i’m simply too young to have such an obsession with it! the show ran from 1992-2000. i was born in 1996, but reruns on the disney channel and abc family cemented it as one of my favorite shows. cory and shawn, closer than brothers, shameless homoromantics, shawn is cory’s first wife!!!!! truly showed me what a best friend can and should be!!!!!! the great love of your life!!!!! TOPANGA, the og weird feminist girl who said stop shaving your legs and start speaking your mind, ladies! the characters are so richly developed that they are real people to my heart. YES every character on this show is in their late 30s-early 40s and YES i feel like we grew up together. in season one they’re in the 6th grade and we follow them all the way to COLLEGE. countless poignant life lessons, often literally dictated by the wise and hilarious MR. FEENY, cory’s next door neighbor and somehow one of his teachers for YEARS. my love was only solidified by the 2014 girl meets world reboot, centered on cory and topanga’s daughter and her best friend. (which was literally cancelled because disney didn’t want to transition from a kids show to a teen show, something essential to the original. also because that teen show would have had CANON LESBIANS. extremely shameful move in 2017!) boy meets world lives rent free in my heart and i will never evict it!!!!!!!

i consulted my mother when i got stumped for more and she reminded me that i had obsessions with the impressionist art period and babies and ANYTHING fairies or pixies, and i was way too young when my love of the canadian teen after school special degrassi began. she also said bob ross, which i was hesitant to include because he’s been super ~trendy in recent years, but to be fair (To Be Faaairrr) she’s right! i don’t think people really watched the joy of painting as much as i have throughout my life. best sick day show of all time.

lastly i could honestly list anna herself as a niche interest, my mom actually metioned that ive always hyperfixated on my girl friends (gay) but i’ll just note that YES friday night lights, YES barry lyga novels. love to share so many things with you, niche or not, they’re niche in Our Mind.

#with the baby obsession came an obsession with adoption #my aunt and uncle adopted and when i learned that there were ORPHANS whew #i was in preschool judging people for getting pregnant when there were SO many babies without mommies #she had a good point!#also does being a niall girl in 2012 count

Goodbye SourceFed

And here we are. I have no idea how to go about this. I don’t know how to begin. Maybe that was the proper intro. I don’t know.

SourceFed comes to an end tomorrow. I’ve delayed writing this because I’m having trouble processing everything that comes with the news we all got on Monday.

In 2013, I found a channel as an 18 year old who just finished freshman year of college. I was on the edge of giving up my pursuit of an entertainment career since I wasn’t feeling it anymore. Then on May 12, 2013 - I found them. I found a Truth or Dare, then a Comm Comm, then a news piece, then a Table Talk and it spiraled into googling every host until 6am the next day. I found the channel when I found Steve and Lee through a YouTuber’s React and swear to god thought they were a comedy band (idk, they had the look). I went “Oh, SourceFed. That’s an interesting name for a band”.

They are what kickstarted my interest in YouTube. I had casually watched it since 2006 but I turned hardcore and obsessing over many YouTube creators since finding them. Their chemistry is unlike anything I had ever seen on YouTube and I have never seen anything like it since then. They reminded of my friends and that was something that resonated with me.

I owe a lot to SourceFed. They propelled me into my YouTube and comedy career. They're the main reason I ended up at Groundlings which turned into everything else I do now. I’m still in the program at Groundlings as well as taking classes with iO West and Second City. I did two years of sketch comedy with my college and I have been making videos consecutively since last August.

They've given me the most amazing friends (Hi Lee, Andre, Sophie, Kara, Ming, Ryan, Carol, Katie and many many more). I have a lot of memories. Getting picked for TableTalk 5 times as well as CommComm and Truth or Dare. Watching BFTT, Santa Steve, Truth or Dare, and the SourceFed Christmas Special. The OG comment commentary couch. Jonathan Gay. I hate wasp. DeFranco Does LA. The SF booth at VidCon 2015. Going to VidCon 2015 (and 2016 and eventually 2017). Competing against DeFranco in Super Smash Bros at VidCon. Matt Lieberman was even my mentor last year at VidCon's mentorship program! Meeting any of them in person always made me feel so special seeing how personable and genuine and encouraging they were even while working in an industry that can leave a person so jaded.

And then fan interaction went to a whole other level. Lee is now my friend and mentor at Groundlings and meeting her was one of the best things that happened to me. We’ve now known each other for a few years and she is like the sister I wish I had. That was something I NEVER expected to happen.

I went to their channel first when a friend passed away suddenly a few years ago. It was my go-to for laughing again after a hard day of school or work. Finding them changed the trajectory of my life forever. It ended up in my life at the right place at the right time. Watching the hosts grow into incredible pros in the industry and really wonderful people was a joy and I'm going to continue to watch what they do next because they will conquer the world. YouTube was blessed with 5 years of a channel that dared to experiment and I will respect them for that. It's the end of an era. But I know I speak for many people who say that SourceFed is what prompted them to pursue a career in new media and through that we can carry on the impact of those 5 years.

I want to thank the team for pouring so much into their work to inspire and educate everyone who was lucky enough to find their videos. Thank you for inspiring me, pushing me, and encouraging me. Thank you for being so kind to my baby brother at last year’s VidCon (his picture is at the very end. It’s blurry AF but you get the picture). He got the best group hug he’s ever gotten in his life. I write this now as a 22 year old with an office job in programming but spends most of her free time during the day at her desk writing, reading scripts, editing scripts, planning camera shots, you name it. I’m gonna make sure to eat shrimp scampi at some point soon to commemorate. And then I will make you proud one day.
