Mother Nature added something very special to this wedding when she sent a thunder storm over the mountains of the Sierra Nevada with warm rain falling just when this cortijo ceremony was due to start. No one was in a rush. We waited. The Spanish guitarist played quietly in the entrance to the cortijo. I settled into a corner and read through my ceremony. The guests chatted and laughed in excited expectation. And the bride and groom no doubt enjoyed an extra glass of cava. Cabalgatas or parades may not be happening this year but you can't cancel cake! 👑👑👑 Whatever your beliefs it's important to respect the cultural traditions of others Spanish children all over the world are waking up this morning to gifts brought to them by "Los Reyes ", the three magic kings. On December 5th people would line the streets to watch the Three King's Parade. As the procession passes, sweets would be thrown into the crowds... top tip, open your umbrella to either protect you from the onslaught or turn it upside down to collect more sweets! ☂️☂️☂️ Families then go home and share "roscón de reyes", a special round cake decorated with crystalised fruit, traditionally baked with a figurine and an "haba " or bean inside. I was excited to be in on the first ever live event for a new wedding organisation here in Spain aiming to bring all wedding suppliers together under the banner of the APBE, Asociación Profesionales Bodas España 13 hundred wedding suppliers talking with one voice to protect and positively promote our wedding industry here in Spain. Now more than ever, I am proud to say that I have a registered self employed business (autonomo). I received a government benefit during the two months of enforced closure of my celebrancy business. During that time I supported my autonomo wedding community colleagues in the spirit of #communityovercompetition by mutually advertising each other's businesses. It felt good and we truly changed from being a wedding industry to a wedding community. As restrictions lift and we achieve a new normality in Spain, the #weddingcommunity will work together to once again embrace our brides and grooms and celebrate their special ceremonies. Celebrating variety! In 2019 I officiated weddings with a couple of hundred guest, elopements with just the couple, vow renewals that unified families and baby namings that celebrated new life. I performed ceremonies in castles and palaces, on clifftops at sunrise and on beaches at sunset, in private villas and all-inclusive hotels. I celebrated the love of my couples with traditional ceremonies, readings and ring exchanges but also with sand blendings, handfastings, ring warmings and arras coin exchanges. I officiated in English and in Spanish with a tincy wincy smattering of Flemish - OK perhaps just a few words but I will give anything a go! I danced on the rooftops of Malaga with a flashmob wedding recessional, sprung surprise vow renewals and officiated barefoot on beaches. Throughout my ceremonies I have coaxed and supported, laughed and smiled and seen soooooo many happy tears.
