Mother Nature added something very special to this wedding when she sent a thunder storm over the mountains of the Sierra Nevada with warm rain falling just when this cortijo ceremony was due to start. No one was in a rush. We waited. The Spanish guitarist played quietly in the entrance to the cortijo. I settled into a corner and read through my ceremony. The guests chatted and laughed in excited expectation. And the bride and groom no doubt enjoyed an extra glass of cava. Celebrating Andalucía Day. 

28th of February is an important holiday in southern Spain to celebrate the autonomy of the area. 

The green and white flag of Andalucía is not just hung from public buildings, but from the balconies of the ordinary people too.... schools are closed today but yesterday children wore green and white facepaint and sang the Andalucian anthem. 

Historically, the people of southern Spain took to the streets in their hundreds of thousands many times over the years in support of regional autonomy and ultimately voted "yes " in 1980. 

Today there will be spontaneous dancing of Sevillana and Flamenco in the streets instead. It's a matter of pride and happiness. And I am very proud and happy to call Andalucía my home.
