As a former L5R player (both RPG and TCG, a little at least) I need to know about "l5r au except make it crab"

this is gonna be a long one so buckle up, kiddos! (gonna tag @scholarlostintime as they asked for this one, too!)

so for everyone else: Legends of the Five Rings started as a TCG, got turned into an RPG with four editions, then the game ended, then the IP got sold and the game rebooted as an LCG (which is ending again) and a new RPG. I don’t play the card games, and my interest in the RPG currently is mostly “okay how I do turn FFG’s fucking stupid hard-on for custom dice into a system I want to actually play.” BUT I fucking love the setting. like, A WHOLE DAMN LOT, and have seen I was like...thirteen or fourteen.

tl;dr L5R is a Fantasy Japan setting (like, Heian Era-style court politics, Tokugawa Era-style military/samurai culture, a bunch of other things) with some various other Far Eastern elements thrown in. this setting was originally developed by predominately white men in the nineties, and the early setting fluff definitely hasn’t aged well; my issues with FFG’s dice systems aside, they’ve done a great job making the setting both more egalitarian, friendly to players of all kinds, and respecting the culture the setting draws from. (with the caveat they still do some things I sigh very heavily about but that’s a discussion for another day.)

(aside: yes I realize how funny it is how much I love L5R while also having zero personal interest in exploring FFXIV’s Far East in my own fic or headcanon. I think it’s because especially Kugane/Hingashi is a bit too much of 1:1 match to real world Japan to ping at my worldbuilding interests, whereas L5R is very much its own beast and fun to chew on.)

so a big thing in the setting is that the county of Rokugan is basically divided up amongst seven Great Clans (and many assorted Minor Clans) under the Imperial Dynasty, and each Clan takes its name and symbol from an animal. the Great Clans are: Crab, Crane, Dragon, Lion, Phoenix, Scorpion, and Unicorn. each clan and the major family lines that compromise them have their own stereotypes about them (Crane are the courtiers, Lion are the military experts, Phoenix are the primary priest-magic users, etc). when FFG launched the LCG and new RPG, I basically ended up shooting the shit with one of my friends about hypotheticals of which clans our characters (FFXIV and original) would fit with each clan, and then NPCs and characters from other media, and it spiraled out of control from there. for non-OCs, we didn’t bother to try to find one-to-one matches for the stories, but instead focused more on which clan/family fit the personality best and then went from there.

so, “l5r au except make it crab” is the variation where we put all of our OCs in the Crab Clan specifically. the Crab Clan is one of the clans we both really love (my other top favorites being Unicorn and Scorpion): their conceit is that they guard the southern border of Rokugan against the demons and undead of the Shadowlands, using sheer brawn, tactical ingenuity, and engineering genius (including an enormous fortification known as the Carpenter Wall that spans the breadth of most of the southern border). they have no time for the pretty niceties of the Crane and are considered very coarse and uncouth.

they look into the literal mouth of hell day after day, month after month, year after year, and have done so for a thousand years, with no expectation or reward. it is their duty, and they will see it fulfilled.

this file really isn’t a fic, just a lot of funny little exchanges and scenes. Synnove is a Kaiu (basically the big engineering arm of the Crab), Heron a Hida (the bulk of the Crab’s soldiers), Alakhai a Hiruma (scouts and skirmishers), and Rere a Yasuki (formerly a Crane family, they’re the courtiers, and basically in charge of the vital job of keeping the Crab war machine fed and clothed). the big fun is leveraging the Crab and family stereotypes to highlight different aspects of their personalities or take them in different development directions. (same with other OCs; my old Fallen London character Ali is a Scorpion in the primary AU and works off more of her politicking side, whereas Crab!Ali is her criminal side changed into an kneebreaker to get what she needs from the Rokugani underworld.) one day I may even try to figure out proper Rokugani names for the lot. (Alakhai is easy as in the main version of the AU, she’s Unicorn, who have a strong Mongol influence and her name would stay the same.)

I have....so many OCs, so this one is specifically about Heron because I’ve been working on her story a lot (she’s from the Elder Scrolls series, particularly out of game Merethic Era, Oblivion, and Skyrim: Dawnguard DLC)

I wrote a lot so I’m putting it under the tag thingy.

What was the first element of your OC that you remember considering (name, appearance, backstory, etc.)?

I think I thought of a lot of things regarding her at once? Mostly her backstory though! Her story spans over....lmao thousands of years so I’ve been focusing a lot on her character development to figure out how I’m going to write present her based on all that background knowledge. Her appearance (race + specialization) came after especially while I was tinkering with character creation in Skyrim. And then fantasynamegenerator helped me pick out an Altmeri name for her hvnfjcx

Did you design them with any other characters/OCs from their universe in mind?

Yes!! So many!! There’s so much world building that I need to do since a chunk of her life is set in Merethic Era Summerset and then pre-Atmoran v Falmer war Skyrim. A big part of her story also revolved around the other members of the Volkhair vampire clan (where she resides presently) and her relationship with Serana (useless lesbian and vampire girlfriend) and the Dawnguard knight who freed Serana in the first place (another OC! I don’t hc Heron as freeing Serana because it wouldn’t make sense for her because that’d be mean betraying Valerica’s trust about keeping her daughter and the elder scroll safe + I don’t wanna deviate from the canon questline too much and well...Heron would Never willingly work with the Dawnguard, aka people who kill people like her).

How did you choose their name?

In developing their backstory, what elements of the world they live in played the most influential parts?

So much of her story revolves around change. When change becomes stagnant, that’s when you see her fall apart. She lived through the Merathic Era, a time in which Tamriel and Nirn as a whole was still undergoing a revolution with the stabilization of Mundus. She became particularly adept at alchemy, a new science for mortals, and that’s what garnered attention for her in the first place. Albeit bad attention considering the Aldmeri hierarchy was really kicking off now. Manipulation of the earth by non-ehlnofey was...looked down upon to say the least.

But that bad attention turned into a sweet chance to join the new and upstart Psijic Order made up of other presumptuous Altmer (not Aldmer) who wanted to mess with the Earthbones to hone their magic). In centuries to come, they’d garner so much more respect as the Altmer seek to become the Aldmer again, searching for the answer to their past immortality in the remnants of the ehlnofey, but for now they’re just kinda...there.

Mind you this is a lot on Heron, going from being a nobody to a...sort of somebody? Anyways she continues with alchemy and then finds out she’s really good with elemental magic, particularly storm! So she learns more about it, something she couldn’t do before due to her social status.

Eventually she’s like...I wanna go explore the far north since so little is known about them. Some people give her the side eye because really? You’re gonna mingle with the non-Aldmer/Altmer who we kicked off not too long ago because they’d mess with out stasis too much? Fine.

So she does! She goes off to stay with the Falmer on some anthropological fieldwork to study how they interact with the Earthbones. But then she finds a surprise guest: Atmorans! Humans! What’s up with their ears?

And that’s how she meets Serana! (The timeline for pre-entrapment/vampirification for Serana is...murky, but based on the ingame interactions, her family was def powerful and influential and around before the first era.)

So it’s constantly change. The changes in her life. The study of changing Mundus. And the rapid change that was to come after. And then nothing. Queue Heron’s start of depression and greater apathy because for thousands upon thousands of years to follow, she remains the same.

Bal’s immortality really takes a toll on people.

What (if anything) do you relate to within their character/story?

She embodies some of the worst qualities in me. Honestly, she’s vent OC lmao.

Are they based off of you, in some way?

In the aspects of nostalgia and jealousy, yeah.

If they have an LI, how much of their character is tailored to be compatible to that person?

I’m not sure...I’m still caught up in her pinning for Serana for a few thousand years.

Did you know what the OC’s sexuality would be at the time of their creation?

I have a Big Fat Crush on the vampire lady so yes

What have you found to be most difficult about creating art for your OC (any form of art: writing, drawing, edits, etc.)?

I have too many ideas and I can’t get them down on paper. Also researching lore since I don’t wanna get anything wrong (but so much of the lore can be so confusing ugh)

How far past the canon events that take place in their world have you extended their story, if at all?

Not that far if we go by the Skyrim: Dawnguard DLC. Actually, it’s simultaneous as that DLC.

If you had to narrow it down to 2 things that you MUST keep in mind while working with your OC, what would those things be?

Not to go off track with world building because then I’d skew off the plot and that’d be boring for the reader.

Their anger and jealousy. It’s painful to write sometimes.

Empires SMP Au Child of Corruption

After finding an egg belonging to Zornoth Joey keeps it,

Unfortunately the other empires find out after what hatched out was a small little girl. half demon half girl.

Joey, protects her and even cuts other alliances to keep her safe. He calls the little one Zorra. he raises her as a princess and she is to stay in the Lost Kingdom for her own protection.

Zorra is a sweet, shy but moody and rude girl when she gets mad. She is talented in magic and can control corruption.

She is also very lonely and is an outcast. but she is friendly with the strange demon (zornoth) who follows her and is invisible to the others. this demon teaches her her magic. though Joey forbids her from practicing it in fear of her being locked away or destroyed by the other empires

A New Ducktales Au.

Ducktakes Spoilers: So since the Ducktales Finale just got rid of a good villain. I am making an au for her.

The Curious Tale of Holly Heron: After being betrayed by Bradford, Heron is somehow transported to a strange uncharted forest far from Duckburg. Severely injured and in a coma a strange man finds her and nurses her back to health. This man...Poe he goes by helps her but when she wakes up she has complete amnesia from the severe head injury. Renaming her Holly, he helps her with physical therapy and she grows to love him...however a chance meeting with the Mc Ducks turn her world upside down. Soon her past will come to light and she will have to face her past sins and may have to chose who to be.

i think Stella and Stolas were arrang to be married since they are demon royalty.

I think Stolas liked men at a young age but was made to marry Stella to be able to have an heir. From what I have kinda seen I don’t think they really loved eachother fully, maybe tolerated.

but Stolas began to like men again after Octavia was born so...when he met Blitzo, he decided to do it cause he was was bored of Stella.

Cookie Run Kingdom Au

A Dark Cookies Redemption:

After failing Dark enchantress way TOO much, she orders Licorice Cookies death. Pomegranate lures him to a mountain range then attacks. Thinking he is dead throws him off the cliff, However he survives a fall off a cliff but hits his head very hard. He is found by gingerbrave and his group and soon they uncover he has complete amnesia. They decide to allow him to stay in their kingdom and for once licorice feels like he belongs…although, he feels a strange pull. A pull that he tries to ignore.

So, tell me what you think. This game is adorable and I’m In love with it.

I see everyone else doing introductions so might as well do a quick one myself (don't be afraid to say hi, I don't bite ^^)

My name is Soul, sometimes I go by Soulie, Soup, Soil, Suop, Soupie (Woopie), Newt, really anything you wanna call me

I go by any pronouns

INFP-T, 9w1, Chaotic Neutral

I'm born in Bangladesh but I grew up in Canada

I'm a passionate polyjamorous metalhead, my favourite few bands/artists being Bad Omens, STARSET!!!!, Sleep Token, Bring Me The Horizon, Updog, Palaye Royale, Creo, Wage War, Ice Nine Kills, CG5, Glass Animals, Chase Atlantic and many others that I cannot name cause there's too many lmao

I occasionally do art and sometimes write as hobbies when I get the time to, I mostly make OC art of mine and my friend's and will maybe drop stuff about them here

I'm a huge science nerd and I love Biology and Chemistry, especially in genetics, cells, and atom theory (I hate Thermodynamics, don't ever talk to me about Thermodynamics) Call me crazy but I LOVE Trigonometry too

I love gaming as well, a few of my favourites being METAL GEAR!!!, Devil May Cry, Call of Duty, Ghost of Tsushima, Sky: Children of the Light, Soulsborne games (Firekeeper <3), Geometry Dash, some Roblox games and Minecraft; I go CRAZY for Psychological horror games, I hate all other type of horror games unless it involves messing with your sense of security :]

I like a few particular animes but I don't really watch stuff; Jujutsu Kaisen, To Your Eternity, Bungo Stray Dogs, The Great Pretender, Chainsaw Man, and Trigun/Trigun Stampede-- Not an anime, but I really like Lucifer too, and I really like BFB, mostly Four lmao
