The cousin and cash handler for one of Russia’s most notorious oligarchs poured tens of thousands of dollars into electing a newly minted congressman-elect who called Ukraine’s government “a totalitarian regime.”

Republican George Devolder-Santos vanquished Democrat Robert Zimmerman this month in the race for a House seat covering parts of Long Island and the New York City borough of Queens—riding a red wave that swept the Empire State this cycle, and washing away two decades of Democratic dominance in the district.

Devolder-Santos had long courted conservative media attention by presenting himself as a “walking, living, breathing contradiction”—a gay Latino millennial born in New York City, who is also a fervent devotee of ex-President Donald Trump.

For much of his professional career, which included a stint as regional director at an alleged Ponzi scheme, the Republican used the name George Devolder. However, as he ventured further into the world of politics, he began to increasingly use the name George Devolder-Santos or simply George Santos.

He stood out to the Washington Post earlier this year for his remarks in the aftermath of Russia’s bloody, unprovoked assault on Ukraine.

“It’s not like Ukraine is a great democracy. It’s a totalitarian regime. They’re not a great bastion of freedom,” the congressman-to-be told the paper.

He has insisted that Ukraine “welcomed the Russians into their provinces”—an apparent reference to President Vladimir Putin’s 2014 invasion to prop up rogue separatist parties—and that Ukrainians in the east “feel more Russian than Ukrainian,” even though every single Ukrainian province overwhelmingly voted for independence in 1991.

It was not the first time Devolder-Santos had parroted Kremlin talking points. In the weeks before Putin’s brutal, blundering attack upon his western neighbor, the candidate repeatedly took to Twitter to accuse President Joe Biden of plotting to “start a war” with Russia and deploy American troops to Ukraine.

But unreported until now is that by the time Devolder-Santos made these statements, his congressional ambitions had already received a $32,800 boost from a controversial figure linked to the uppermost echelons of the Russian regime—and that support would more than double in size during the months ahead.

The cash came from Andrew Intrater and his wife, who variously listed her occupation as “homemaker” and “analyst” for Falcon AI, one of her husband’s subsidiary firms.

Intrater’s main venture is today called Sparrow Capital, but it previously used the name Columbus Nova—and its primary function has long been to manage the investments of Intrater’s cousin, Viktor Vekselberg, one of Putin’s wealthiest and most influential courtiers.

So tightly intertwined is Intrater’s business with that of his relative, who snatched up swaths of Russia’s aluminum and fuel industries during the post-Soviet period, that Columbus Nova described itself in 2007 Securities and Exchange Commission filings as “the U.S.-based affiliate” of Vekselberg’s Renova Group. In fact, SEC records show that “Columbus Nova” was merely a trade name, and the company was in fact incorporated as Renova U.S. Management LLC until it rechristened itself Sparrow Capital in 2018.

The rebrand came just months after the Department of the Treasury froze almost all of the company’s assets for its tight ties to the heavily sanctioned Vekselberg. The following year, Intrater became a national figure when it surfaced that his firm had paid half a million dollars to longtime Trump fixer Michael Cohen, and the pair had exchanged hundreds of phone calls and text messages during the 2016 campaign.

Intrater sued the federal government in hopes of regaining access to his fortune, but a judge slapped the effort down in 2020. However, the businessman persisted and ultimately reached what court records refer to as an “administrative agreement” regarding at least part of the corporate accounts in late 2021. However, the case file does not include this document, and Intrater’s team did not respond to repeated requests for comment.

Intrater’s support for Devolder-Santos dates to the GOP pol’s first failed bid for Congress in 2020, which got a $11,600 cash infusion from the financier and his bride, reflecting the maximum contribution amount then allowed.

But after that initial defeat federal donation limits would prove a small obstacle. Starting in March 2021, Intrater and his wife began pouring tens of thousands of dollars into auxiliary committees backing Devolder-Santos: $20,000 directly to GADS PAC, a leadership political action committee bearing the candidate’s initials, plus $12,100 to Devolder Santos Nassau Victory, a joint fundraising committee formed with the Nassau County Republican Party. Devolder Santos Nassau Victory had to drop $10,000 of that gift into the Nassau GOP’s federal account—but that account made just two federal expenditures this cycle, the larger of them by far being the purchase of lawn signs supporting Devolder-Santos.

All this came on top of $12,400 Intrater and Pentinen gave the Devolder-Santos for Congress committee.

The individual who answered a phone associated with Devolder-Santos identified himself to The Daily Beast as his campaign coordinator, but declined to share his name. He would not speak directly about the Intrater gifts, but insisted that the national Republican Party had set the candidate up with most of his large contributors.

But Devolder-Santos was far and away the largest beneficiary of Intrater’s largesse this year. Further, Devolder-Santos’s committees are the only ones that received gifts from Intrater’s wife this cycle.

The campaign coordinator directed The Daily Beast to forward all questions to a press email, but messages sent to the address provided received no reply.

Shortly after the Russian onslaught against Ukraine began, and public opinion swung toward Kyiv, Devolder-Santos appeared to soften his stance on the country. In a Fox News interview, he highlighted that his grandfather was born in the Ukrainian capital, and on Twitter he has urged prayers for the country.

However, he seems to have avoided the topic since late February, and it is unclear at this point whether he will join the anti-Ukraine faction within the narrow GOP majority in seeking to sever aid to the embattled nation.

Dark Cybertron Chapter 11: The Word “Logic” Doesn’t Even Mean Anything Anymore

Our issue opens up with a flashback to establish some things. 

Because despite the six literal issues of prelude, and all the ham-fisted exposition we’ve gotten throughout the “Dark Cybertron” event, we still don’t have all the information we need to understand what the hell’s happening.

I have a feeling this won’t quite cut the mustard, either.

Anyway, back during the events of MTMTE #1, when Rodimus was making his call to action to his fellow Cybertronians (and by “Cybertronians” I, of course, mean “Autobots”, because prejudice is a hard habit to kick, even for the best of us) Brainstorm was doing science on Hardhead. He was doing this science to make sure that the Dead Universe hadn’t killed him without him realizing. This is a very common issue in the world of IDW2005 Transformers, considering that zombies are a part of canon, so it’s just best to be sure. Nova Prime’s lifeless body sits in the corner like the world’s worst coffee table book.

This will take some explaining, because this is Phase One related.

In Spotlight: Sideswipe, Nova Prime beefed it, except he didn’t, because his “essence” returned to the Dead Universe. This is because he was chosen by the Dead Universe to enact its will on the other, much cooler, Not-Dead Universe. In short, he’s a weird robot zombie-ghost with a save point in the Dead Universe.

Brainstorm has his corpse in his lab to make sure this bastard is true and proper dead, or that the body he left behind is at least. That, in combination with Hardhead proving to be very much alive, means that today can be counted as a win for everyone! The “Alive-People-Counter” machine proves it!

…This is why we can’t have nice things.

Brainstorm being undead does have some precedence within the narrative, given what happened in MTMTE #3.

Though I can’t help but wonder what the guy’s been doing for the last year and a half, that he didn’t notice being dead, when his soul is a large, glowing orb with physical presence. I dunno, he just seems like the sort of guy to keep up to date on that sort of thing, if only for scientific purposes.

In the present day, in the beautiful city of Iacon, everything’s gone to shit, and Whirl’s gotten hot for some reason, as billions of Ammonites fall out of the sky.

Who friggin’ drew this-

I should’ve known.

Up on the Lost Light, Ultra Magnus is breaking out the fancy swears, as a… tornado, I guess, of Ammonites hits the underside of the ship. Bumblebee wants to evacuate the friggin’ planet- which, I don’t know if you know this, would be a little difficult to do, even with a ship the size of NYC. Unfortunately, that’s not gonna fly, however, because all the stars in the sky are blue-shifting.

Wikipedia tells me that this is probably a bad thing, and Perceptor agrees, calling it “the end of everything.”

Over in Shockwave’s Lair of Villainy and Magical Bullshit, everyone’s favorite purple science gremlin has stabbed a “time drive” into his chest. Galvatron is laying dead on the floor in the foreground, but this isn’t about him. Shockwave orders Jhiaxus to activate the time drive, I guess because he doesn’t have long enough arms to do it himself. Jhiaxus warns Shockwave to be mindful, lest he lose himself in time, and then we get a return to a Roberts writing staple that we haven’t seen in quite a while.

Waxing poetic on the nature of time- this time, in a visual medium!

Awful lot of fixating on your ritualistic amputations there, Shocky-boy. I suppose this is ONE way to try to cope with a lack of control in your life.

Of course, to those on the outside of Shockwave’s brain, this doesn’t look nearly as impressive- it actually just looks like him screaming really loud at the ceiling. Bludgeon isn’t sure that this course of action is a healthy one to take, but Jhiaxus is too busy being sapiosexual to worry about that.

Sure. I’m not even going to bother trying to understand this anymore.

Jhiaxus orders Monstructor to go keep the Autobots away from Shockwave.

Also, Galvatron isn’t dead. Good for him, I guess.

Over inside Metroplex, Windblade’s face seems to be stuck in the generic “I am a nice, nonthreatening female character who is also pretty” position, as Ultra Magnus tells her that the universe is ending. Chromia watches in the background as this happens, likely wondering if being relevant in modern media again is worth this bullshit.

Hearing that Bumblebee plans to take the fight to Shockwave is enough to get Metroplex back on his feet, which is good, because I don’t think we have a lot of time to convince the guy to do anything- this event ends next issue.

As Metroplex windmills his arms through swarms of Ammonites, the Lost Light lands, and Bumblebee, Megatron, and all their experts disembark. Bumblebee makes an unsolicited comment about Megatron’s body. They go to meet Soundwave, who isn’t terribly thrilled with Megatron having become all buddy-buddy with Bumblebee. Megatron mentions that the Decepticons are going to have to rethink their strategy once this is all over, with the implication being that they’re going to- gasp- work together with the Autobots.

Then Starscream shows up with Metalhawk, Skywarp, Rattrap, Waspinator, and Scoop for some fucking reason, in tow. Skywarp is going to teleport everyone into Shockwave’s Bastardization of the Concept of Science House, even though he pretty clearly isn’t feeling too well. What a guy.

Starscream and Megatron have a bit of banter that won’t set your hair on end with how awful they are to one another, Metalhawk tries to apologize for attempting to kill Bumblebee, and we really don’t have time for this shit right now. The narrative knows this, because it shifts to focus on Prowl and the Constructicons. Things are looking real rough just about everywhere, and it’s coming down to the wire, so they gotta do the thing.

The thing Prowl really doesn’t want to do.

The thing he said that he wouldn’t do again.

So anyway, they form Devastator.

As Monstructor gets ready to get punched in the face by a bunch of construction workers and a cop, everyone down below is firing off laser blasts and gearing up for a teleporting adventure. However, there’s a small problem- there are too many people to teleport! Oh no! The only solution is for Soundwave and his cassettes, Scoop, Getaway and-

Excuse me, Hook?

Hook, my dude? What the fuck do you think you’re doing? You’re supposed to be a leg right now, motherfucker, why are you here? GO HOME, HOOK.

Anyway, I’m really glad we wasted the time establishing that Soundwave and his band of merry little men were coming along on this trip, only for them to not come along after all. Love that shit.

I don’t actually love that shit. I’m sorry for lying.

With the load lightened, Skywarp teleports the rest of the gang to where they need to be, and Waspinator is immediately stabbed with a massive raging poisoning sword of doom. Bludgeon’s here to greet everyone, and Metalhawk is gonna try his damnedest to get the guy to come around to their side.

You remember when Metalhawk did things like connive, and scheme, and actually had more depth than a sidewalk puddle? Because I remember. Now he’s just... Beast Wars Silverbolt, but he’s not even attempting to be charming. I bet he wouldn’t even call his evil girlfriend “my soul’s delight.” Lame.

Bumblebee, Megatron, and friends book it for Shockwave, while Magnus and Skids get ready to kick some ass. Brainstorm isn’t feeling so hot, but this isn’t about him.

Starscream is having a minor crisis over the fact that Scoop stayed behind in a literal war zone for Starscream’s sake. I dunno that he did it specifically for Starscream, but Starscream seems pretty convinced that he did, and who am I to argue with the leader of a whole friggin’ planet?

The gang makes it to Jhiaxus’ ship, where they find-

I swear to god, if there’s not a fucking explanation for what the shit is happening right here I’m going to scream.

…So anyway, Metalhawk and Jhiaxus start beating each other up, Starscream gets bent out of shape by Jhiaxus’ trash talk, and we get an explanation for his new look.

Which, y’know, thank fucking god.

Jhiaxus has new reactive armor, which takes anything thrown at him and adapts it to his own body for personal use, which feels like some Grade-A Kids Playing Pretend bullshit, but WHATEVER.

While this is going on, Megatron and Bumblebee have run into the center of Shockwave’s Laboratory of Morally-Abhorrent Mystical Buffoonery Masquerading as the Scientific Method. Dreadwing tries to make a case for self-defense of his property, but unfortunately he doesn’t understand how property rights work, and gets blasted for his troubles. Galvatron reveals himself to be alive to Megatron, who immediately grabs the dude by the throat.

Galvatron’s feeling pretty down about having inadvertently helped end the universe, and is throwing himself a little pity party. Megatron’s not having it, however, tossing the man into the ground and revving up to fusion-cannon him to death. Bumblebee stops him, for some reason, and then starts rambling, I guess STILL trying to be Optimus Prime 2.0.

Bumblebee, you put bombs in people’s heads to make them fall into line. You don’t get to talk to Captain Warlord about moral nuance. And weren’t you also berating Metalhawk for trying this same thing not five minutes ago?

Bumblebee’s words reach Megatron, and instead of annihilating Galvatron, he offers the dude a hand up.

Then Bumblebee gets shot and dies, while Shockwave just… stares menacingly, I guess.

Cool.

The death of his very best friend in the whole wide world sends Megatron into a rage, and he punches Shockwave in the face. This doesn’t really faze him much though, as he bats Megatron across the fucking room like he’s made of papier-mâché and dreams, going on about how the universe will save Cybertron by being its power source “in an endless forever.”

Shockwave, you’re a man of science. You ought to know that “forever” as a concept, doesn’t fucking WORK scientifically. It’s nonsense. You’re nonsense, and I hate you.

Back with the Bludgeon Ass-Kicking Squad, Brainstorm’s having a bad time, while everyone else sort of awkwardly poses. Skids gets stabbed. Skids falls down. Brainstorm falls down. Ultra Magnus is concerned, but he’s too busy not being stabbed to help anyone.

Brainstorm’s in a lot of pain, and then a hand bursts out of his chest and-

GODDAMMIT JAMES.

Fucking- Team -Imus burst out of the Dead Universe from Brainstorm, who I will remind you, is undead thanks to Dead Universe lightning bullshit, making him a link between it and the much cooler Not-Dead Universe. Everyone is posing, even Cyclonus, who absolutely should think that sort of thing is beneath him, but whatever.

Danna is the daughter of a noble in Gatlon city. Gatlon is ruled by King Hugh and King Simon, members of the Renegades, the gruop that saved it from the anarchists and Ace Anarchy. Nova is the niece of Ace Anarchy and is the worlds most feared and dangerous pirate. She kidnaps Danna as ransom, and while they travel back to Danna’s father the two girls begin to realize they weren’t so different after all…

Both girls deal with missing each other, and Danna has to make a big decision

Danna blinked her eyes open blearily.

“Nova?” she asked, her words slurring in her mouth.

A body collapsed on top of her. “Oh, Danna, you're alright.” It was her mom. “I’m so glad you're safe! I was so worried. Are you okay?”

“Mom. What happened?” Danna asked. The last thing she remembered was Nova looking down on her, eyes bright with tears and guilt.

“That awful pirate almost killed you!” Her mom let out a sob. “Oh, I was so scared. He held a knife to your throat. A knife! Can you believe it?”

Danna’s hand trailed to her throat where a thin cut lay. “No,” she whispered quietly. “I can’t.”

“Well, it’s all okay now. You’re back. You're safe.” her mom hugged her tightly. “You better come downstairs. Your father will be glad to know you’re up.”

Danna tried to smile. “Okay.” She picked herself out of bed. “What about No- the pirate?” she asked, correcting herself mid sentence. Danna wasn’t quite sure why. Nova had left her. SHe knew exactly what she was doing, but Danna was still protecting her.

“What about him?”

“Is he caught?”

“No.” Her mothers lip curled. “He got away. But don’t worry. He will never get anywhere near you again.”

“Good,” Danna said quietly, hoping with her entire heart it wasn’t true.

“Come quickly, your father has news!” Her mother said, then hurried out of the room.

“Would you like to bathe, Miss Bell?” A maid asked.

She shook her head. “I’m okay.”

“Let me help you change,” she started forwards, but Danna stopped her.

“I’d rather do it myself. If that’s alright.”

The maid looked at her confused, then nodded. “Of course, milady. Call if you need help.” She hurried off.

Once Danna was alone, she crumpled to the ground. She struggled to find her breath as tears racked her body. Danna was alone. All alone. Nova had left her. Danna felt like she was suffocating.

So she lay on the floor sobbing, trying to find a reason to keep going.Without Nova near her, the future looked pointless. Was what Danna had even a life? No freedom, no choices. There was nothing for her.

They said she was home.

But Danna knew they were wrong.

This wasn’t her home. Her home was with a short girl with choppy black hair and sea colored eyes. Her home was with a girl who was as unpredictable as the sea. Her home was with a girl who was just as likely to cut you with her words as a blade. Her home was with Nova Artino.

No. Her home was Nova Artino.

And Danna wasn’t home anymore.

Nova dragged the chest into the storage, arms barely strained by the heavy gold.

“Nova?” A voice asked hesitantly.

“Yes?” She didn’t bother looking up. She knew who it was. “What is it Viv?”

“Look, I know you aren’t going to say anything. I know you are going to keep up your nothing gets to me, facade. But it's okay. You don’t have to pretend.” Viv placed a hand on Nova’s shoulder gently.

“What are you talking about?” Nova ducked away.

“I saw the way you and Danna acted together. I can tell when two hearts are made for each other. You’re like me and Moxie.”

“Listen. I have no feelings for Danna Bell,” Nova said quietly.

Viv sighed. “I know you won’t admit it. But I know you. And I can tell you're hurting.”

“I am fine.”

“No. Nova, you’re not fine. You are hurting, and I know that you don’t want to let your walls down. And that's okay. I get it. I get it maybe more than anyone else,” Viv sighed. “Just… I’m here for you. When you’re ready.”

Viv started to leave, but Nova shot her hand out.

“Wait,” She said in a quavering voice. “Stay… please.”

Viv smiled. “Of course. Do you want to talk?”

Nova slammed the door shut, and fell into Viv’s arms. She shook with sobs.

“I miss her,” Nova cried. “I could have let her stay. She wanted to. But I was too much of a coward. I was too scared of Ace. I traded Danna for money I don’t even need. I sentenced her to a life without freedom. It’s all my fault.”

“It’s okay, Nova. It’s okay,” Viv said, holding tight to Nova’s shaking form. “This isn’t your fault.”

“No. It is. This is all my fault. I should have just kidnapped Adrian. That would have been better. Then no one would have gotten hurt. Danna and I never would’ve met.”

“Look at me. If you never met Danna, you wouldn’t be the person you are. She’s like a second part of you. She’s your heart. Without her, you wouldn’t be Nova Artino. Never wish that you never met your soulmate. Because even if they leave you more hurt than before, they fill a part of you that was left empty before.”

Nova wiped her eyes. “I’m never going to see her again. She’ll spend the rest of our lives hating me. For what I did. And I deserve it.”

“Nova, you don’t. You deserve love. Not hate. And you have to believe that you are going to see her again. The universe works in strange ways. But if she’s yours, then you’ll see her again.”

“Promise?”

Viv nodded. “I promise.”

Nova smiled weakly. “I should go. Thank you.” She wiped her face off. “And Viv?”

“Yeah?”

“If I ever hear you telling people about this, I won’t hesitate to throw you overboard.”

Viv laughed. “That’s my girl.”

Danna stepped into the parlor, dress pinching her ribs tightly. She hadn’t worn a corset in ages, and she certainly hadn’t missed them.

“Danna! Oh, my baby, I’m so glad to see you home, safe and sound,” her father said, racing over to embrace her. “We were all so worried.”

“Thank you father,” she said stiffly. “I’m just glad that this whole mess is over.”

“As am I. Sit, sit! We have news.” He ushered her over to one of the plump couches.

Danna settled down, and reached for a scone. She stuffed it into her mouth, and sighed as the tart raspberries exploded on her tongue.

“Danna, back straight,” her mother reprimanded.

Danna suppressed a groan, and sat taller. She hadn’t missed that either.

“So, what’s the news?” Danna asked.

“Oh, we’ll tell you soon. We just need to wait a little bit longer,” her father said.

Danna gulped. “Wait for what?”

“You’ll see.” Both her parents were grinning.

“Hm.” Danna grabbed another scone, and crammed it into her mouth.

Her mother raised an eyebrow, but didn’t say anything.

Danna suppressed a grin. Normally her mother would have stopped her at one scone. But she was still worried about Danna.

“Have they found the pirate yet?” Danna asked nonchalantly.

Her father sighed heavily and shook his head. “No. But don’t worry. They will find him, and make him pay for what he did to you.”

Danna tried not to grin. Nova was still safe. “That’s too bad,” she said, trying her best to sound sad. She wasn’t. At all. She was giddy. Nova was still okay.

The doorbell rang, and the butler hurried off to answer.

“Smile, Danna,” her mother instructed.

“Who is it?” she asked anxiously. “Who’s coming over?”

“You’ll see.” Her mother smiled primly. “Please behave.”

“Behave? Mother, I’m not a child anymore. I-” Danna stopped talking when she saw who walked through the door. Her jaw dropped.

The Kings, and the crown prince stood in the doorway to the parlor.

“Your highnesses!” Danna hastily rose, and dropped into a low curtsy.

“Please,” the prince said awkwardly. “No need for any of that.” Adrian smiled.

Danna brushed herself off, and put what she hoped was a demure smile on her face. It felt like more of a grimace.

“What do we owe this visit?”

“You didn’t tell her?” King Hugh looked at her parents with surprise.

Danna’s father cleared his throat. “We thought it would be best if he told her himself.”

“Tell me what?”

“Perhaps we should give them some privacy,” King Simon suggested.

“What's happening?” Danna asked.

Adrian shuffled awkwardly. “Maybe we could go to the gardens,” he suggested.

“Good idea,” Dannna said quickly. She needed to get out of the house. She needed to be outside. “This way, your highness.” She extended an arm, and nearly bolted away.

She pushed the door open, and inhaled the scent of salt and flowers gratefully.

Adrian chuckled. “Couldn’t handle being inside any longer?”

Danna groaned and nodded. “Ugh yes. It’s awful. I’ve been back for less than a day, and I’m already suffocating.” Adrian and Danna were actually much closer than they seemed. For years, they had snuck away during events along with two other friends. They hated the scheming and politics of the court, and bonded over their shared hatred of it. They tried to keep it secret so no unwanted rumors would spread.

Adrian's face creased. “How are you? That must have been so scary…”

Danna laughed. “It wasn’t too bad. Can I tell you a secret?”

Adrian nodded. “Of course.”

“And you promise to never tell?” Danna asked.

He solemnly held out his pinky. “I’ll even pinky swear.”

Danna laughed, and shook his pinky. “Nightmare isn’t Noah Artino.”

“What is that supposed to mea?”

Danna sighed. “She’s not Noah, She’s Nova.”

“Nightmare’s a girl?” Adrian’s eyes widened. “Really?”

Danna nodded. “And she isn’t as bad as she seems.”

“Danna, she kidnapped you.”

“Yeah, and while I was kidnapped, I was more free than I ever had been.” Danna sighed. “She’s done bad things, but at heart she’s a good person.”

Adrian raised an eyebrow.

“So. What’s so important that you came here to tell me?”

Adrian groaned. “Danna, I know this isn’t what you wanted. I know you never asked for this life. I didn’t either. I have the same amount of choices as you. Maybe less even. But I get to choose who I marry. And…”

“No.” Danna held up her hands. “Don’t even finish that sentence.” she hurried away.

“Danna, wait. It’s not what you think!” Adrian jogged after her. “I don’t like you.”

“Thanks,” she said dryly.

Adrian sighed. He caught her arm. “Please… just listen to me.”

Danna groaned, and spun around to face him. “Okay. I’m listening.”

“Listen Danna, I know this isn’t what you want. But you have to face the reality of our lives. We can be together in public, but not as a couple privately. This is the only way we can escape something we both don't want.”

Danna inhaled deeply. “Adrian… I’m lesbian.”

“Oh. Shit.”

Danna laughed softly. “Yeah.”

“Can’t you tell your parents? My dads are together, and they are fine with it.”

Danna shrugged. “I don’t think it would matter. They would just say I’m confused. Or that I’m just being difficult. Look, Adrian, I don’t have a choice now. I know that you wanted to help, but you’ve just made everything so much harder.” Danna groaned, and rubbed her temples.

“The pirate… Nova…” Realization dawned in Adrian’s eyes. “You love her, don’t you?”

Danna nodded sadly. “I don’t even know if she loves me back. But I’d die over and over again for her.”

“I can help you escape! I can get you to her.”

Danna smiled softly. “Adrian, thank you, but I can’t. I don’t want to risk it.” She sighed heavily. “I’ll marry you. You were right, it is our only option.”

“Danna, that wouldn’t be right. That’s not you! Don’t pretend to be someone else,” Adrian pleaded. “Shit, this is all my fault. Danna, I’m so sorry.”

“No, it’s not. You were trying to help. And you are right. It’s a good option. We can pretend to be together. Hell, maybe we can adopt a kid or something. But I can’t be with Nova. I know that.”

“Danna…”

“Adrian, we are out of options. Even if my parents let me turn you down, eventually they’ll force me to marry someone. I’d rather it be you.”

Adrian wrapped his arms around her. “If this is what you want, then I will help you as best I can.”

Danna smiled gratefully. “Thank you Adrian. It means a lot to me, I hope you know that.”

He nodded. “We’d better go tell the others then.”

She cringed. “Fun.”

“Get used to it.”

Text description provided by the architects. The New York Apartment´s project, located in the city of São Paulo – Brazil, is the result of a creative process that took into account important conditions. The family, consisting of a couple and two young daughters, before moving to this apartment, lived in the Netherlands for 8 years. Thus, constant references to Dutch culture and design permeated the composition process, so that the family would continue to identify with its own home. In addition, we considered the specific logistics of the four residents’ routine, categorizing the spaces according to the real needs of each one. Exclusive suites, one office and a playroom arose because of that.

The formal and chromatic composition brought together areas with the same use, generating four programmatic boxes, within the single space with double height ceiling. This concept can be seen in the schemes that follow this memorial. The first box consists of the entrance hall and access to the toilet. The ruby color highlights this space that works as a break between inside and outside the apartment. In front of the elevator, we exposed the couple’s collection of Dutch miniatures, so that right at the entrance, there is a connection with the family’s affective memory. The second box consists of the table that separates the kitchen from the living room, a large piece of furniture that received tensoflex as a lighting device that simulates the sunrise and sunset light, through the dimming of the LEDs. Through this warm and changeable light, we managed to change the atmosphere of the apartment’s integrated and single space.

The third box is the mezzanine that houses the office and the fourth box is the bookcase of the playroom. The materials follow the same color palette. The use of light wood tones was the artifice that brought us closer to the initial references.

The furniture was brought from the Netherlands, with some pieces developed by FCstudio, which also designed the joinery. The design of the New York Apartment translated the family’s emotional desires into interior design, at the same time considering its necessary and particular functionality.

Look On My Works, Ye Mighty...

WATCHMEN #11 AUGUST 1987 BY ALAN MOORE, DAVE GIBBONS AND JOHN HIGGINS

SYNOPSIS (FROM DC DATABASE)

Rorschach and Nite-Owl approach Karnak as they discuss about Adrian Veidt's agenda and his unexplained reasons for wanting to destroy the world.

Inside the retreat, Veidt gets up from his bank of television monitors and heads into a control room. He then pushes a button on the console next to a time gauge that reads "Eastern Standard Time: 11:25" before communicating to his associates that his work is done and to meet him in his vivarium to celebrate.

Veidt then recounts, to his friends, his life story. He was born in 1939, the same year his parents immigrated to America. He was a very intelligent young man, but he hid his intelligence from his teachers and parents by deliberately achieving average grades. By age seventeen, his parents died and he inherited their vast fortune. However, he chose to give it all to charity to prove what someone could accomplish from nothing. He idolized Alexander the Great and decided to measure his greatness against his by retracing the steps of his hero in which he traveled throughout the Middle East, Africa and Asia. On his return, he adopts the name Ozymandias, the Greek name for Pharaoh Ramses II, and starts his career as a costumed hero to fight all the evils of the world. As Veidt finish his story, he turn to his associates, which he has apparently poisoned, then opens the vivarium dome letting a blizzard of snow into its tropical enclosure.

Rorschach and Nite-Owl finally arrive at Karnak and eventually confronting Veidt. A brief melee ensues, but Veidt subdues both of his attackers with precision. Nite-Owl demand Veidt what he's trying to do. He explains that he realized fighting crime could never rid the world of evil, as he had been fighting only the "symptoms, leaving the disease itself unchecked." Then at the ill-fated Crimebusters meeting, he realized that The Comedian was right when he said it was pointless to form a crime-fighting team when nuclear war was inevitable. With the Cold War escalating and the proliferation of more arms - all of which are exacerbated by Dr. Manhattan's existence, he realized the military deadlock would eventually lead to one final conflict. For the last ten years, Veidt formulated his plan to solve this dilemma by tricking the world; frightening humanity into salvation with "history's greatest practical joke."

Veidt knew that Manhattan has to be out of the way of his plan first. He gave all of Jon Osterman's associates cancer which forced him into his exile. With the new technology that Manhattan had brought to the world, Veidt began to research advancements in the fields of genetics and teleportation on his private island. The Comedian discovered his island by accident while returning from Nicaragua. Initially believing to be a Sandinista base, Blake went to investigate and found a collection of artists and scientists working on a "monstrous new life form." Upon learning the creature's intended purpose, Blake was severely traumatized. But he was too afraid to expose the plot, and Blake only told Moloch, who he knew wouldn't understand. Since Veidt had Moloch's apartment bugged, he personally killed Blake before he could tell anyone else of Veidt's master plan: to frighten the world's governments into cooperation against a false alien threat designed by Veidt.

After killing Blake and ridding Manhattan, Veidt orchestrated his own assassination attempt in order to throw Rorschach's suspicion off of himself. He was also responsible for pushing a cyanide capsule into Roy Chess's mouth after subduing him to prevent him from talking as well. Veidt would finally teleport his life form, whose brain was cloned from a powerful psychic, into New York City. Since teleporting technology was limited, anything living that is transported would die of shock and explode. The ensuing psychic shockwave would kill half of the city's populace.

Nite-Owl is left deeply skeptical of Veidt's plans and asking him when he had planned on perpetrating this outlandish scheme while under the belief that he and Rorschach are here to prevent what he is about to do. Veidt replies that he didn't "do it." He already did it "thirty-five minutes ago."

In New York, the news vendor complains about the loud music being played by the Pale Horse band coming from Madison Square Garden that is being attended by knot-tops. He soon stops his rant when he sees Aline, Joey's ex-girlfriend. Aline ask him if he saw Joey, which he haven't. So she decide to wait outside the Promethean where Joey works. Joey soon steps out and is not thrill to see Aline, whose middle-class lifestyle and mannerism clashes with Joey's. The former couple attempt to salvage their relationship, but only to fall apart; Aline attempt to give her a book about relationships to help Joey understand what happened to them, and Joey complains that she just wanted to go to bed with her one time. Joey angrily tears the book apart and begin to fight Aline.

Meanwhile, Gloria Long meet Malcolm and tries to make amends with him. She admits she misses him, but cannot live with someone who fell driven to help hopeless cases that affect their marriage. But Malcolm then notice Joey's fight and tries to stop what she's doing against his wife's wishes.

The vendor talks to the kid reading Tales of the Black Freighter and is surprise to learn the kid's name is "Bernie", short for Bernard which is also the vendor's real name. But Bernie doesn't care too much since it's a common name. Bernard then notice Joey's fight with Aline. This is also seen by Detectives Steven Fine and Joe Bourquin, who are just passing by in their car. Fine, who has been suspended, stops the car and interfere the fight over Bourquin's objections. The scene also attracts Joey's boss and his brother, the Gordian Knot technician who fixed Dan Dreiberg's lock.

Just as everyone tries to break up Joey from Aline, they pause in stun horror when they see a large bright, blinding light emerge from the Institute for Extraspatial Studies building. Bernard and Bernie are closer to the building in which the vendor attempt to shield the boy from harm as the light engulfs them and everyone nearby.

TALES OF THE BLACK FREIGHTER

The mariner rides into Davidstown and enters his own home, expecting to find pirates occupying it. In the darkness, he attacks a woken figure to be a pirate. But he stops when he is discover by his own children and the figure he was beating is his wife. The mariner reel in horror of what he just done before fleeing from his house and the town. He runs back to the beach as he wonder how he could have mistaken the black freighter's nonexistence arrival. The revelation soon unfolds which he sees the very ship waiting out in the water. The mariner then realizes that the black freighter didn't came for Davidstown at all, but for the mariner himself. He then willingly swim towards the massive ship and joins her crew.

AFTER THE MASQUERADE

In 1975, Doug Roth, a reporter for the Nova Express, conduct an interview with Adrian Veidt at his Antarctic retreat Karnak. Throughout the interview, Veidt recounts his life story from his humble beginnings as a costumed hero to his retirement, his interest in subjects such as futurology and electronic music, and his views on his fellow costumed adventurers. Veidt finish his interview by saying that the public may see him as the smartest man in the world, he "wish it wasn't this one."

REVIEW

I always forget that Veidt has an actual flashback, but because it is narrated by him to others and it is short, mixed with the exposition about his plan, it gets lost. I also think his backstory, while logical, doesn’t have the human appeal of the other characters.

The punchline of this issue is of course, that Veidt already doomed New York on page 7. And with it, the supporting cast of the series that conveniently end up together by the end.

Veidt may not be another Republic serial killer, but he does like exposition. In fact, Gibbons had to ask Moore to shorten the exposition, as his original script wouldn’t fit the pages. Moore accepted the challenge and did that, but you can still see that Veidt talks too much.

The “Hiroshima couple” takes the shape of the two Bernies in this issue and the shape of the blood stain from issue 1 (and the cover of this issue as well).

Inhuman of The Day

August 10 - Ms. Marvel

Kamala Kahn. A latent Inhuman whose transformation was triggered by exposure to the Terrigen cloud. Her newfound powers enables Kamala to increase and decrease her size at will. She can also enact this size-shifting ability to specific limbs, allowing her to create giant fists, elated feet, or elongated legs. With a great deal of focus and energy, Kamala can completely shape-shift and change her entire appearance and size.

These powers take up a great deal of energy and, thus far, she can only utilize them for brief periods of time before she becomes exhausted. While Kamla’s powers help her be resilient to most forms of attack, she has shown a specific vulnerability to electrical based attacks; the reasons for this remain thus far a mystery.

Kamala grew up in Jersey City. Her parents immigrated from Pakistan and Kamala has often struggled in maintaining a balancing between her parents wishes that she adhere to more traditional Muslim values and her feelings of obligation to go behind her parents’ backs and utilize her newfound powers to be a costumed crimefighter.

Her best pal is a her fellow classmate named Bruno Carrelli, who runs his family’s corner bodega near Kamala’s house. Bruno has had a longstanding crush on Kamala, but thus far Kamala has only seen him as a good friend. Bruno was quite crestfallen when he saw that Kamala was a bit smitten by the son of family friends named Kamran.

Later on, Bruno has started dating a young woman named Mike (short for Michaela). At first, Kamala felt oddly jealous over the matter, but eventually came to feel happy for Bruno and also became good friends with Mike. Kamala’s other good friends include Nakia Bahadir (a fellow classmate who also attends the same Mosque as Kamala and her family); Zoe Zimmerman, a classmate and cheerleader who is not as shallow as she often acts; and Josh, a jock who is similarly a lot more intelligent and sensitive than he lets on.

Kamala’s older brother is named Aamir. Unlike Kamala, Aamir is quite strongly devoted to his faith and he often chastises his younger sister for not better adhering to the guidance and customs of the tenets of Islam. Although he can be stodgy and dogmatic, Aamir is a good brother to Kamala and very much wants the best for her.

More recently, Aamir met and fell in love with a young woman named, Tyesha Hillman. The two eventually married and recently Tyesha gave birth to a baby boy whom they named Malik. Kamala thinks Tyesha is just great and she was over the moon happy to have become an aunt. Tyesha’s younger brother, Gabe, is a classmate of Kamala’s and the two have become good friends.

Kamala went through Terrigenesis when the Terrigen Cloud passed through New Jersey while she and Nakia were attending a party near the Hudson Bay. Immediately after receiving her newfound powers, Kamala knew that a great responsibility had be foisted unto her shoulders.

A longtime fan of the super heroes, Kamala quickly decided she needed to use these powers for good and become a costumed hero. Her all-time favorite hero has been the Avenger, Captain Marvel (Carol Danvers), and Kamala initially shape-shifted into Danvers’ form when rescuing a Zoe who had fallen into the bay and was drowning. Kamala later decided that she should become her own hero with her own identity so she created a new costume, but assumed the name of ‘Ms. Marvel’ as a homage to her hero, Carol Danvers.

Initially, Kamala believed that her powers were a result of her being a mutant. After sharing an adventure with the X-Man, Wolverine, however, she learned she was not a Mutant and was instead one of the many new Inhumans created by the Terrigen Cloud.

Kamala was soon thereafter identified by Queen Medusa as being a new Inhuman possessing great potential (a great potential for heroics as well as a great potential for getting into trouble). Medusa dispatched Lockjaw, the watchdog of the Royal Court, to look after Kamala and keep her out of trouble (although it was more often Lockjaw who needed watching over and protection by Kamala).

Kamala and Lockjaw investigated a series of missing persons involving teenagers in the Jersey City area. They discovered that these youths had been abducted by the bizarre villain known as The Inventor. The Inventor held great disdain toward the younger generation and he used his captives as a bio-electric energy-source for his various machines and inventions. Kamila ultimately defeated The Inventor and freed his many captives.

Kamala was invited to train at New Attilan so to better hone and refine her powers and abilities. While visiting the Inhuman city, Kamala met a number of her fellow new Inhumans (including Inferno, Naja, and Iso and Flint). She also has had adventures alongside the Amazing Spider-Man, Wolverine, Loki, Moon Girl and the Agents of Shield.

Throughout her early adventures as a superhero, Kamala struggled with feelings of guilt over the fact that she was disobeying her parents and pursuing a secret life her family did not know about. She would often discuss these feelings (in a covert fashion) with Sheik Abdullah at her Mosque.

Sheik Abdullah has been able to offer Kamala good advice, encouraging her that carving her own path, doing what she feels is right, is the best way to honer her parents and her god.

Later, Kamala reunited with a childhood friend named Kamran, who it turned out was also a new Inhuman. Kamila was quite smitten with Kamran, yet he proved not to be as good a guy as he initially seemed.

Kamran was secretly in league with the duplicitous Inhuman named Lineage, who used him to lure Kamala into a trap. Like Medusa, Lineage was extremely intrigued by Kamala and certain there was something particularly special about her. Lineage was staging a coup of New Attilan to forward his Inhuman supremacist agenda; and he very much wanted Kamala to join his cause.

Kamala refused Lineage’s offer to join him and escaped his clutches. Lineage was later defeated by Medusa and the other Inhumans, but Kamran continued the schemes that Lineage had put in place. Believing that he might find a like-minded ally, Kamran abducted Kamala’s older brother, Aamir, hoping to expose him to the transformative Terrigen Mists. Ms. Marvel, joined by Captain Marvel, arrived on the scene and defeated Kamran, rescuing Aamir.

At the onset of The Secret Wars event, where it appeared as though the world was ending, Kamala’s mother admitted to Kamala that she is aware of her double life as a superhero. Kamala’s mother doesn’t entirely agree with this decision, but she is nonetheless very proud of her daughter.

Following the Secret Wars Event, Ms. Marvel was recurred to join Tony Stark’s all new, all different group of Avengers. Along with Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, and The Vision, Kamala was joined on the roster by her fellow young heroes Nova (Sam Alexander) and Spider-Man (Miles Morales). Kamala has found Sam to be a bit of an annoyance, but she’s cultivated a close friendship with Miles.

Being an Avenger had been a dream come true for Kamala., but the great responsibilities of being an Avenger, maintaining patrols of her local Jersey City, keeping up with her school work, on top of various social and family obligations has left her very much over-taxed and more of then not, quite exhausted.

Following an adventure where Ms. Marvel foiled a plot by the sinister Dr. Faustus to take over the minds of a trendy neighborhood in Jersey City, Kamala came to realize that she was being stretched too thin by all of her many obligations. In an effort to navigate around this problem, Kamala and her friend Bruno used a high tech 3-D printer and magical material that had been left behind by the trickster god, Loki, and created multiple drone-like clones of Kamala.

Kamala had hoped these clones might sit-in for her at school or during family functions, thus allowing her more time to attend to her duties as a super hero and Avengers.

As might be expected, this plot went terribly wrong and the various clones developed their own rudimentary sentience, running amok before amalgamating together into a rampaging behemoth. Ms. Marvel was eventually able to defeat this monstrosity with the assistance of Captain Marvel and Iron Man.

Later, Ms. Marvel was recruited by Captain Marvel to head up a platoon of junior Carol Corps Cadets. Captain Marvel was using the prophetic visions provided by the new Inhuman, Ulysses, to prevent crimes and disasters before they happened. Ms. Marvel and the cadets were put in charge of intervening on future crimes occurring in the Jersey City area.

Initially, this plan to prevent on crimes before they occurred was working well and Kamala did not see a downside to the preventative justice program. When discussing the matter with Tyesha, however, Kamala came to wonder about how this system may be infringing on individual’s civil liberties. Ulysses’ powers to see the future was essentially a refined process of profiling. Tyesha spoke about how such profiling was used to essentially criminalize entire subsections of the population. She spoke about the neighborhood where Tyesha grew up and how the police utilized profiling as a means to enforce a very racist agenda.

The burgeoning doubts Kamala was feeling over the whole matter were further compounded when the young cadets under her charge started acting in an increasingly authoritative and aggressive fashion. The power to essentially change the future had quickly gone to these youngsters’ heads. Ms. Marvel and the cadets were made aware of a vision Ulysses had involving a mass murder at Kamala’s high school. They rushed to the would-be perpetrator's home to arrest him before he could commit this crime. Much to Kamala’s shock, the culprit turned out to be her good friend, Josh.

It turned out that Josh was bereft over the fact that Zoe had broken up with him. He had planned on causing a blackout at his school, yet (according to Ulysses’ vision) doing so would have caused an electrical surge and subsequent fire that would have claimed many lives. The cadets roughed Josh up and detained him to ensure that this disaster would not occur.

Although Kamala was glad to have prevented this tragedy, she continued to have doubts over the idea of detaining people without due process or access to legal representation. Her committed to the whole program of utilizing Ulysses’ visions to alter the future was beginning to wain. And she hasn’t been the only one. The entire superhero community has become split over the matter, with roughly half siding with Captain Marvel and feeling that Ulysses’ visions must be used so to save lives, and the other half siding with Iron Man, feeling that civil liberties must be maintained and Ulysses’ profiles of the future are not refined enough to put such absolute faith in. Following the death of The Hulk, the philosophical differences between these two groups came to a head, lines were drawn and hero came to battle hero. Forced to choose a side, Ms. Marvel opted to align herself with Iron Man (even though doing so put her at odds with her mentor, Captain Marvel, as well as her fellow Inhumans of New Attilan).

Meanwhile, Bruno attempted to break into the detention facility where Josh was being held. He used a homemade explosive device to get through the main door. The device malfunctioned and blew up right in front of Bruno. Kamala arrived to find Bruno gravely injured.

He survived, but sustained paralysis to half of his body. Bruno ultimately chose to leave Jersey and accepted an invitation to study at the School of The Golden City of Wakanda.

The whole affair caused Kamala to question the methods of the predictive justice program and lose faith in her former hero, Captain Marvel. Ultimately, Kamala left the Avengers and created a new team of young heroes called The Champions.

Following a brief vacation in which Kamala visited relatives in Pakistan, Ms. Marvel found herself matching wits with a mysterious new villain known only as Doc.X. It turned out that this Doc.X was actually a computer program that had somehow gained sentience and attempted to extort Kamala into doing its bidding, threatening to expose her and her friends’ secrets if she refused to do its bidding. With the aide of her friends, Ms. Marvel was ultimately able to defeat and apparently destroy Doc.X.

During the Secret Empire story event, Ms. Marvel found herself teaming up with her fellow Inhumans, Quake, Inferno, Karnak and Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur, pooling their strengths in an effort to take down Hydra. She had a few additional adventures alongside the Secret Warriors following the Secret Empire ordeal.

During this time, she developed a slight crush on her teammate, Inferno; as well as adversarial relationship with Quake. Kamala saw Quake as too extreme, too willing to take drastic measures. It was rather heartbreaking fro Kamala when she discovered that Quake and Inferno had engaged in a romantic affair. Ultimately, the Secret Warriors broke up and Kamala went rejoined her former comrades among The Champions.

Some time thereafter, Ms. Marvel was asked to join in for an event celebrating Asian American heroes. Other attendees included Shang-Chi, Jimmy Woo, Silk and Amadeus Cho. Kamala was very happy and proud to be a part of this event and she and her fellow Asian American heroes had a few adventures together.

Later on, the villainous cad know as Chuck Worthy, The Hydra Hipster, began a campaign to take over Jersey City by way of gentrifying the city and instituting an attitude of ultraconservative norms and anti-Inhuman/anti-Mutant sentiment.

Worthy had recruited two super-powered enforcers to help him in this endeavor. One was Becky, the former Carol Cadet Kamala had butted heads with during the Civil War II ordeal. The other was a mysterious masked villain called Discord. Kamala was ultimately dismayed to find that this Discord was actually her friend Josh in disguise.

Worthy’s plot was eventually foiled. Becky was captured and incarcerated, but Josh escaped and his current whereabouts remain unrevealed.

Needed a break, Kamla opted to spend her summer vacation visiting family in Karachi, Pakistan.

While in Karachi, Kamala met a young hero known as The Red Dagger. The two had an adventure together and Kamala found herself kind of crushing on the dashing young hero. Later on, Kamala’s family friend, Kareem, came to spend a semester abroad in Jersey City. Soon thereafter, The Red Dagger started showing up to aide Ms. Marvel in her missions. Both Kamala and Kareem suspected each other’s secret identities as Ms. Marvel and The Red Dagger, but opted to respect one another’s decisions to keep their secrets.

Around this time, Kamala found herself a bit overwhelmed by the various duties and demands of her school work, her social life, and life as a super hero. She needed a break and, with Red Dagger now in town to protect the streets of Jersey City, she opted for a sabbatical. She enrolled in a tony private school, stopped patrolling, and stopped hanging out with her friends.

Kamala’s pals (specifically Najia, Zoe, Mike and Gabe) were mystified by Kamala’s disappearance. Furthermore, they were very concerned that Ms. Marvel’s absence might invite all manner of crime and mayhem to Jersey City. They took it upon themselves to fill this void and each took turns dressing up as Ms. Marvel and patrolling the streets, just to let evil-doers know that the city was still being protected. Alongside The Red Dagger, these ersatz Ms. Marvel’s found themselves embroiled in a terrible scheme hatched by the evil Inventor (who had recently been paroled from prison).

This time around, The Inventor had set his sights on the elderly, victimizing senior citizens sent to assisted living facilities and using them as human batteries to power his army of creepy cyborgs.

Things got out of control pretty fast as The Dagger and the gang found themselves in over their collective heads. Fortunately, Kamala’s friend Neftali was able to track her down at the private school and convince her to return.

She arrived just in time to aide her friends (and Captain Marvel) in putting an end to The Inventor’s sinister plot. Along with defeating The Inventor, Kamala also got to rekindle her friendship with Captain Marvel.

Shortly thereafter, Kamala decided to reveal her secret identity to her friends. None of them were surprised in that they had each already put the matter together. It offered Kamala a great deal of relief that her friends were so accepting of her and had her back.

Meanwhile, Kamala has continued her adventures alongside The Champions. She also recently met Squirrel Girl and she has found herself embroiled in an adventure to stop a powerful new Inhuman named Ember. This adventure continues to unfold in the pages of the Marvel Rising.

Concurrently, The Red Dagger chose to let Ms. Marvel know that he had fallen for her. Kamala doesn’t really feel she is old enough or wise enough to handle being in a romantic relationship, yet it was difficult for her to push away her strong feelings of attraction toward The Dagger. Before she new it, the two were sharing Kamala’s first kiss on the roof of the Circle Q.

And just then, Bruno had returned home, just in time to see Kamala kissing this dashing stranger (it was rather crushing for him).

Bruno ultimately chose to be up front with Kamala and he divulged to her that he has been in love with her for as long as he can remember. Again, Kamala knew she is not yet ready to be involved with such things, yet hearing Bruno’s declaration of love stirred up a lot of feelings in her… maybe she loves him too! It was all just too much for her.

After consulting with Sheik Abdullah, Kamala ultimately decided that she just needed to deal with these feelings and follow her heart. She ultimately decided that she was going to stick with her values, she is not old enough to be ready for romance and will do her best to still be friends with these boys despite the fact that they make her feel all mushy inside.

After assisting Kamala in taking down a returned manifestation of the villainous Doc. X., The Red Dagger informed Kamala that he was returning to Karachi. He has let her know how he feels about her, but doesn’t want to unfairly infringe on her life. Were she to ever decide that she likes him the way he likes her, then she will know where to find him.

Likewise, Bruno has also chosen to respect Kamala decisions. The two have struggled to figure out a way to remain friends despite their mixed up feelings toward one another. In an effort to do so, Kamala and Bruno have begun trying to better understand the nature of Kamala’s powers. Doing so has proven disastrous in that for some reason Kamala has suddenly found herself unable to fully control her powers.

And this has happened at the most misfortune of times in the villain known as The Shocker has come to Jersey City to pull off a heist. Kamala donned her guise as Ms. Marvel to take down the Shocker only to find her powers short circuiting with her unable to control them. Something that could bring about deadly results. How Kamala and Bruno will cope with this frightening turn of events continues to be told in current story-arc in the pages of Ms. Marvel.

Alita: Battle Angel Review

As another of James Cameron projects that has been simmering away on the writer-director's back-burner for nearly two decades, the manga adaptation of Alita: Battle Angel, directed and co-written by Robert Rodriguez and digitally produced by Peter Jackson's digital effects team Weta Digital, had the time and the cinematic pedigree to drop jaws and pop eyes out of people’s head. While the bravura special effects and visuals will certainly do both, the film has very little spark to the rest of proceedings to keep you from wanting more. It is a scrapped together narrative from the mechanical parts of other sci-fi films as Rollerball and Blade Runner, amongst others. It’s all parts but has no motor.

Set in the year 2563, under the floating, mysterious metropolis of Zalum, is the dusty and junk ridden Iron City - the remanence of a large municipality from before the war known as The Fall. Christoph Waltz plays the kind-hearted Dr. Dyson Ido, a physician for the repairing of cybernetic injuries (for the large cyborg population that inhabits the city). Ido finds a discarded but intact head and spinal column of a female android in an industrial-sized scrapyard. He decides to give her a fully reconstructed android body, originally made for his now deceased disabled daughter (he also names her Alita after her as well). But Alita (Rosa Salazar, in CGI make-up) has no memory of her past, and Ido becomes the Geppetto to her Pinocchio; teaching her of this harsh, violent and cruel world that she has been nursed back to life into.

You are your own worst enemy sometimes, and the major ailment that Alita: Battle Angel suffers from is the titular character. Not from Salazar herself; she plays the eerily beautiful, sweet teenage girl very well, who is slowly rekindling her warrior spirit as the dangers of this world begin to target her. Particularly with Zalum’s mysterious overlord Nova who wants her decommissioned once more. But once that initial naivety has faded off and she forms into this terrifyingly unbeatable warrior that things begin to malfunction. The film devotes too much time on her relationship with the cute but bland mechanic Hugo (Keean Johnson) in a vanilla romance that has that bad taste left by those YA dystopian franchises. While the solid supporting cast of Jennifer Connelly as Ido’s ashen ex-wife Chiren, and Mahershala Ali as Vector, the scheming and on-the-ground subordinate to Nova, are left being brooding scene apparel.

Coming from the grind-house sorties of the Machete franchises to a more mainstream titan, Rodriguez certainly adds his mark with the combat sequences, involving plenty of cyborg vs. cyborg martial arts. But as Alita’s killer instinct ramps up, that sense of peril becomes non-existent. The thrills waver off, as does Alita’s casual attitude toward her past-life and her relevancy in this one. The film wants us to care, but what reasons do it have to make us?

Alita: Battle Angel has the innovative SFX holding it up from being a narratively generic blockbuster that, like the titular character, is missing its identity.

Shows:

3%: The show is set in a future where people are given a chance to go to the “better side” of a world divided between progress and affluence in the Offshore, and devastation and poverty in the Inland, but only 3% of the candidates succeed. Very nice show, and season two has just been released! ;) (Available on Netflix)

The Mechanism: If you’re looking to learn portuguese and know a bit more about Brazil and it’s politics, I’d definitely recommend this show! The Mechanism depicts Operation Car Wash, an ongoing police taskforce that discovered a widespread corruption scheme involving the Brazilian government and several prominent engineering firms. It’s like our own version of House of Cards, but more interesting. And based on real facts lol (Available on Netflix)

Avenida Brasil: Idk wheter you’re familiar with brazilian soap operas or not, but this one… I have no words, it was such a hit! To me it’s still one of the best brazilian productions EVER! I was just 12 at the time it aired and still remain a fan! Basically, a young girl who had her life ruined by an ambitious, unscrupulous woman returns to her as an adult, under a new identity and seeking revenge. It’s NOT like the american show “Revenge”, believe me. It’s a lot better!! Unfortunately I couldn’t find a place where you could watch it subtitled, I just came across this website, it’s got the first episode with english subs :(( You can definitely find it over the internet for downloading, both the subs and the episodes, if you eventually like it after you watch the first episode tell me so I can help look for some links :)))

Cidade de Deus (City of God): This movie is more serious, and you’ve probably heard about it maybe? It became very famous. “Rocket, a budding photographer whose way out lies in his camera rather than the gun, narrates the story of the gangs of children and youth he grows up with, armed to the teeth, who thieve and threaten their way through daily life to survive in a place that holds no other options. Ignored by the cops and social services their lives and livelihoods grow harder as petty pot dealing turns to major drug trafficking and the stakes get higher” (Available here)

CZWG Student Scheme and Revitalised Railway Arches In for Planning

CZWG has submitted plans for a 284 room student scheme on Hornsey Road adjacent to London Metropolitan University and opposite the Emirates Stadium. It includes proposals for the opening up of a new pedestrian route between Holloway Road station and Hornsey Road and the revitalisation of 21 dilapidated railway viaduct arches and a derelict building on Holloway Road (25 May 2022).

The shape of the site suggests a triangular plan building with a curved frontage expressing the change of direction of Hornsey Road. The 12-storey student building would create a townscape marker to the stadium and complete the built form on the northwest side of Hornsey Road. The new landscaped public realm designed by muf architecture/art, with flexible commercial space at ground level of the new building and the railway arches, would activate the currently disused area, improve access, pedestrian permeability and facilitate a 15-minute city lifestyle for the students and surrounding community.

The student accommodation is a mix of studio rooms and cluster flats with 35% being affordable. There are extensive indoor amenity facilities for students including common room, dining room, library, gym, dance studio, laundry and quiet contemplation rooms. There is also an amenity terrace with great views on the roof which is characterised by a large circular planter and pergola structure to add to the urban greening of the project.

Piers Gough, CZWG Founding Director said: “The building is in the form of a grand Palazzo fronting the extensive piazza and podium of the Emirates stadium. The alternate triple height arched openings of the base of the building relate to the height of the railway viaduct while single storey rectangular vertical openings between deliver a human scale. The frontage terminates each end in ‘flying’ half arches which dramatically extrude along the other two facades and meet in a double curve over the main student entrance. Doubled up windows to each room on the top floor make a distinctive cornice to the building form.”

The proposals have been subject to extensive pre-application consultation with the London Borough of Islington, the GLA as well as Transport for London, Network Rail and London Metropolitan University. If granted planning permission, the scheme will enable the revitalisation of the derelict viaduct arches and create a lively pedestrian connection with Holloway Road.

I now want to imagine what it'd be like if the Dark Ones had somehow corrupted Gyrus Krinkle instead of the Alchemist as their Skeleton King... But I can't fathom how disturbing things would be. Though a SK fanboying the Hyper force would be the most terrifying thing ever. Probably ask them where they'd like their bodies to be mounted if he can't brainwash them into his minions (not thinking too hard about the timeline mess. It's all too scary).

I shit you not, from the moment I first got this ask(however long ago that was – my bad,sincerest apologies) this concept’s been stewing in my mind. I already have a ludicrously self-indulgent AUgoing I don’t need this.

ugh here we go again I guess Okay let’s set the scenehere, because for DO!Krinkle to happen, then our canon SK can’t. So let’s say that Captain Shuggazoom, instead of hurryingoff to save the city, stayed with the Alchemist as he went to shut down theNetherworld gate. He had a really skeevy feeling about the whole thing,whatever Al said about the grid being “impenetrable,” so even though his alarmstarted to go off he hung around a few more seconds just to make sure. Thusly,when Mandarin tried to jump up onto the grid, Cap was able to make a smooth-asssave and be like “c’mon little buddy listen to your dad he’s shutting it offnow” and held him back until everything was safely turned off.

(Mandarin sulked for the rest of the day, because being toldwhat to do by anyone other than his dad makes him insufferably cranky.Thankfully for dinner that night they had a noodle dish that happened to be hisfavorite, so his mood perked up considerably. And that’s the anti-climactic endto what would have been a horrible, life-altering evening otherwise.)

Years pass, and things progress pretty much how they did incanon in terms of the monkeys’ training, with a few key differences: Obviously,there was no need to wipe their memories, so even though the monkeys split upto learn their respective trades (Mandarin + Antauri and the Verans, Nova andOffay, etc.) they all still remember each other and would write and videochatand meet back up at their Dad’s for special occasions and stuff. (Also itshould be noted that they became robot monkeys and go off to train at a MUCHmore relaxed pace than in canon. Without demons breathing down their necksthey’re all allowed to move at a healthier pace towards things.) When they allget back to Shuggazoom, they work to help Captain Shuggazoom defend the cityfrom his assorted rogues gallery. TechnicallyCap’s in charge of the whole outfit, but Mandarin secured himself as leader ofthe Monkey Team “conditionally” (hepestered Cap and Al until they caved).

And then along comes Krinkle.

While he’s just as obsessed with the monkeys as he’s everbeen, the difference here is that he ends up coming into the monkey’s lives alittle earlier than he does in canon (Timeline? I FEAR NO TIMELINE). Since themonkeys are – at least – fifty years old by the time of the show, and I’d placeKrinkle anywhere from mid- to late-forties, let’s say he’d start stalking them here during his teens. ThinkSyndrome-from-Incredibles originstory: after pestering Cap to let him be his partner for an unspecified amountof time (and being repeatedly rebuffed; “Kid where the heck are your parents??”),he becomes bitter and disillusioned and decides to take matters into his ownhands. Krinkle’s selling point was that he could be the scientific/mechanicalgenius to Cap’s rough-and-tumble fighting style; he either hadn’t gatheredenough info on the monkeys themselves yet to know that the Team already has oneof each of those, or when Cap pointed this out he was like “yeah I know they couldhelp me it’ll be so cool!!” Cap eventually tries to shut the matter down forgood by saying he already has apartner that fills that role for him, and he’s worked with Al for years so hereally didn’t see a point in changing things now.

Baaaad move there.

So now Krinkle’s all indignant, because whatever this“Alchemist” guy can do, he’s positive he can do better. He manages to find outwhere Al lives (which is still out in the middle of nowhere, bless his oldhermit-y heart), and heads down there with the intent of having a gadget build-offor something to prove he’s the better mechanic. He gets there, breaks in, andstarts plodding around the place trying to find the Alchemist so he can makehis dramatic challenge. He gets distracted when he gets to the lab, because nowthat he’s found his competition’s invention stash he wants to have a look toget a feel for what he’s up against (he grudgingly admits that yeah, fine,these inventions are okay, but hecould still do better if only given thechance). There’s one thing whose function he can’t work out, though. It’s abig, ugly looking machine with a big, circular fixture on it. Kind of lookslike it might be a portal, actually… wonder where it leads to?

Y’ALL KNOW WHERE THIS IS HEADED.

The Hyperforce (who’re still located in the city, as percanon) get a really rude awakening in the middle of the night and have to goout to take care of the demons who’ve managed to escape. Since Cap has themonkeys and the Robot helping him out this time, they manage to wrap it up inwithout too much issue. But when they’re done they all panic a little becausethey only know of one place where demons could come from, and they’re scaredsomething happened to the Alchemist. Obviously, they rush over to his house tocheck on their friend/dad.

Back at the ranch, Al heard Krinkle screaming and ran tohelp (he had no idea who this kid was or whyhe was in his lab, but y’know what those are questions for later).Unfortunately, he’d come onto the scene justas demons were starting to crawl out. He really only caught a glimpse of whatwas happening to Krinkle before he was accosted by unholy netherbeings. He’sstill not corrupted, but by the time the Team get to his house to help he’sbeen plenty disfigured. His face doesn’t really even look like a face anymore, justa skull…

(Confession time: this bit is mostly just because I reallylike SK’s first design. Your skull has no reason to be that weird shape ya bigdoofus. Ya absolute dope. Ya feckin weirdo. God I love ya.)

At some point before Cap and the Team got there, Krinkle hadrun off. After assuring his worried family that he’s okay (all thingsconsidered, anyway), Al feels fucking AWFUL. Some poor child will have tosuffer a fate worse than deathbecause of his machine. Everyone tries to convince him it’s not his fault withlittle success. Sprx, though well-meaning, says something to the effect of“Better him than you, Pop,” which inadvertently makes Al feel worse. Mandarin is unapologetically ofthe mind that the little weasel deserved what he got, and it served him rightfor breaking into the lab in the first place. Not surprisingly, this viewdoesn’t exactly help either.

They don’t see or hear from Krinkle after that. They assumethe corruption was too much for him and he died sometime after running fartherinto the Zone of Wasted Years. Al is continually guilt-ridden.

Not too long after, unfortunately, whatever weird thing thatkonked the monkeys out in canon so Chiro could find them and wake them up stillexists here, so they have to go to sleep and Al and Cap are left alone for abit (I… STILL DO NOT FEAR THETIMELINE, BUT THIS MAKES IT A LITTLE BLURRIER).

Things progress kindanormally from this point, i.e. Chiro wakes the monkeys up, gets Power Primatepowers, and is on the Team. Only differences are that Mandarin’s still on theTeam (and still leader, both because Cap’s kinda old now so “conditionally”turned into “officially,” and I’m sorry but destiny or not if you think foreven a second that Mandarin would let some random human kid lead the Team overhim then you clearly don’t know this simian), and Cap and Al are around.Everything’s hunky-dory for maybe a month as everyone settles in to the newsituation, and then you get exactly one guess what happens next.

Some ways that having Krinkle take SK’s place in canon wouldchange things: Firstly, though he’s still obsessed with the Monkey Team andgunning to lead them, it’s ONLY the monkeys he wants now. Now that he’s gotSpecial Dark One Insights on things, he views Captain Shuggazoom as essentiallya pawn in the grand scheme of things (he don’tgot no special destiny) instead of worshipping him along with the monkeys likehe used to. Moreover, while he doesfixate particularly on Chiro like he does in canon, here it’s because he loathes Chiro. Not only because he’skinda against anything with a “Chosen One” label on it now (as per request ofthe Dark Ones), but he’s also supremely, viciouslyjealous of him. Oh, so he just wasn’t goodenough for the Team, is that it?? He was older than Chiro when he asked to be on the Team, and a mechanical genius! What’s this brat got that he didn’t?!

Next, Krinkle wouldn’t use formless as minions. I’ve alwayskind of headcanoned that the reason SK had the powers that he did was actuallymore because he’d been an Alchemist before rather than it solely being a resultof the Dark One’s corruption. They gave his powers an extraordinary boost, nomistake, but it was only because he’d known how to do magic prior that he wasable to do it as SK. Now Krinkle doesn’tknow a singular thing about magic, so while he has some dark powers now (mostly that he doesn’t need to eat or sleepand has the ability to corrupt other things to some extent), he’s nowhere nearas powerful as SK. So yeah none of that creating goopy-legions with the flickof a wrist for him. He’d fashion himself some mechanical mooks instead (formlessstill would exist in this AU, but I can get into that another time).

Can’t decide if the Skeletal Circle – or whatever theKrinkly-version of this would be – would exist here. On the one hand, I’m sureKrinkle would love to have a group ofpeople dedicated to kowtowing to him (if Krinklezoom’s any indicator, anyway,which I personally think it is). On the other hand… well, we just establishedthat Krinkle wouldn’t be as powerful as SK, so would he really be able toinspire enough awe or terror to justify a cult?

Anyway, if Krinklehas a cult to mirror SK’s, and if Valinahappens to be a thing in this AU, her relationship with Krinkle would be verydifferent than her relationship with SK. Again, Krinkle doesn’t have SK’spower, and one of the things Valina seemed most enamored with about SK was his power. Not to mention the factthat his main goal (possibly even more so than releasing the Dark Ones) seemsto be making himself leader of his enemies.She might have started out in his cult because her parents dragged her there,but I’m decently positive that all she’d see when she looked at him would be apathetic, whiny little man unworthy of the powers he was bestowed. So I can seeher either going “fuck this bullshit I’m out”and splitting to become a threat independent from him, or hanging around andstringing him along until she became his Dragon, and then stabbing him in theback once she’d decided he wasn’t useful to her anymore. So still technicallybecoming a threat independent from him, but just manipulating him and leechinghis power while she did it.

All Canadians stand with you and grieve with you today and always.” A horrific rampage Over 12 hours beginning on April 18 and continuing to April 19, Gabriel Wortman set out on a murderous rampage in rural Nova Scotia, killing 22 people — some of whom he knew, others were strangers.
