VIETNAM; ECHOES OF THE ENDGAME...
In the Sixties and Seventies, the Cold War was at its absolute height. And nowhere did the flames burn more brightly- or voraciously- than in the jungle shrouded cauldron of Vietnam.
Both Russia and America poured in arms, ammunition and 'advisors' to their respective client states, North and South Vietnam.
Unable to deliver a knockout blow on the ground to an opponent that was about as easy to grasp as a ghost, the Americans and their South Vietnamese allies decided to carpet bomb North Vietnam into submission.
This proved about as effective as past attempts. Lyndon Johnson and Richard Nixon learned absolutely nothing from the folly and fury of Bomber Harris and Hermann Goering before them. The North Vietnamese did not break under the relentless barrage of bombs.
Today, unified Vietnam enshrines the memory of those who defended the country from both air and ground.
In these photos, you can see a preserved MIG-21 Fishbed fighter, an intact SAM ground-to-air missile system, and an example of a rapid fire flak battery...

"Nuclear powers do lose wars; big countries often do; and imperial powers will be humiliated." (Timothy Snyder)
While I agree with the general sentiment I sometimes wonder if its applicable to ukraine and what that would mean.
If we take vietnam as the example. Compared with Ukraine, Vietnam was on the other side of the world and not "really" the backyard of the US.
On the other side, there was a security narrative which made it to its backyard (domino theory) and ultimativly it's narratives creating backyards.
Those narratives can change when tested on the battleground. Northvietnam was an existential thread until it wasnt.
Could apply to Ukraine. But one should consider what the US went through and did to that region, before the narrative was defeated. Loco.
How loco would the Kremlin get before changing narratives? That it stops short before the blast requires some optimism one can sometimes lack.

Asia Pacific 60 years ago today: China under Mao (28 Mar 1959) https://buff.ly/2FB7Ria Following the end of the Korean War in 1953 and France’s Indochina War in 1954, China began to move away from its dependence on the Soviet Union. From 1958-61, Mao Zedong attempted to rapidly modernize China with the Great Leap Forward, only to trigger famines which killed tens of millions of people. At the same time, Tibet unsuccessfully attempted to throw off Chinese rule, forcing its leader, the Dalai Lama, to take sanctuary in India. #asiapacific #history #welovemaps #map #1950s #1959 #maozedong #chinesehistory #coldwar #indochina #indochine #indochinawar #frenchindochina #march #march28 #northvietnam #sovietunion #ussr #southvietnam #tibet #maps #koreanwar #todayinhistory #historytoday #historyteacher #historybuff #historygeek #historynerd #asianhistory #worldhistory (at Beijing, China) https://www.instagram.com/p/Bvis4SpA3HE/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=cevfc1t8gvau
