HEART OF HAWAII
WHICH ISLAND WOULD YOU CHOOSE?
Hello Travelers!
The American writer Henry Miller famously said, "One's destination is never a place, but a new way of seeing things." Doesn't that quote capture Hawaii perfectly? The Aloha Spirit, literally meaning, "the presence of breath," is the philosophy of living with love, compassion and grace for others. This makes Hawaii the perfect environment to create meaningful memories with friends and family... no matter which (if not all) of her picture perfect islands you choose to experience. With that said, if you have Hawaii in mind for the winter holidays, now is time to be thinking about reserving your space for festive travel. Please get in touch soon, as availability is quickly becoming extremely limited for many popular warm-weather destinations.
OAHU: SNORKELING AT HANAUMA BAY
THE KAHALA HOTEL & RESORT
If you want to get acquainted with hundreds of tropical fish and marine life, no matter your snorkeling level, take a 20-minute transfer from The Kahala Hotel & Resort to the famous Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve. “Hana" is the Hawaiian word for "Bay" and "Uma" refers to the curves of the indigenous canoes. The bay was declared a protected marine life conservation area and underwater park in 1967. It remained one of the premier destinations in Oahu, featuring majestic green sea turtles, vibrant parrotfish, and more. When you return to the resort, continue getting up close and personal with sea life at their private dolphin lagoon.
KAUAI: A HAWAII & SOUTH PACIFIC CRUISE
CRYSTAL CRUISES
Wrapped in magnificent beaches, draped in lush rainforest and kissed by translucent waters, the gem-like islands of Hawaii and the South Pacific have long been the treasured muses of great artists, captivating all with their serene natural beauty. On this journey of locales, you’ll pause in Kauai, better known by its well-deserved nickname, the "Garden Isle." Fewer people live here than on the larger neighboring islands, but Hawaiian residents and out-of-state visitors alike are attracted to its acclaimed beaches, rugged emerald-colored cliffs, cascading waterfalls and magnificent sandy shores. Secluded coves are found all along the island's irregular coastline and a luxuriant rainforest flourishes on the "wet" side of the island, Kauai being one of the wettest spots on earth.
LANAI & BEYOND: ISLAND HOPPING IN FIVE STAR LUXURY
FOUR SEASONS RESORTS HAWAII
Island hopping has never been more of a necessity when you have the opportunity to experience four distinctly unforgettable island settings with unparalleled Four Seasons luxury, cuisine and service. Furthest north, the authentic yet contemporary Oahu property is nestled in the upscale vacation community of Ko Olina, known for its gorgeous sunsets and lagoons. In Lanai, explore the rugged terrain of this unspoiled island on horseback or ATV before Maui takes you in with her lush tropical landscapes and prime views for epic whale watching. And lastly, the beautiful Hualalai property is a natural sanctuary set on the exclusive Kona-Kohala coast of The Big Island.
THE BIG ISLAND: LAVA & RAINBOW FALLS EXCURSION SHORETRIPS
If you love nature, history and drama, this 5 1/2 hour tour might be a perfect add-on for your Hawaiian adventure. Located in Hilo, Hawaii, Rainbow Falls (known in the Hawaiian language as “rainbow water”) is an 80 ft tall masterpiece where the Wailuku River rushes down into a large pool below. On sunny mornings, this natural phenomenon projects rainbows as it flows over a natural lava cave. From here, you will head down the older back roads of Hawaii through mango groves before arriving at the lava flow that caused an evacuation of the town of Pahoa in 2018. Although at first glance it can look slow moving and harmless, lava can be incredibly hard to contain. At Kaimu, you will have the chance to walk on old lava flows that covered what was once a small beach town with beautiful black sand beaches. Lastly, in one of the most unique spots on the island, you’ll see where lava once burst out of fissures onto Ohia trees, leaving fascinating lava molds.

Discovering Hawaii: 5 Family-Friendly All-Inclusive Resorts You Must Visit
Tumblr media
Let's be honest: when you think about a family vacation, the enchanting shores of Hawaii are hard to beat. I mean, sun-kissed beaches, mouth-watering food, and the adventures. Sounds great, right?
If you're up for the real deal, diving into the best all inclusive hotels in Hawaii can make your dream vacay an absolute breeze. Ready for the insider's scoop? Then, let’s take a look at five of the best options for your family vacation in Hawaii.
1. Four Seasons Resort Hualalai: Where Luxe Meets Local
Just saying the name "Four Seasons Resort Hualalai" feels like an escape, doesn't it? Perched gracefully on the Kona-Kohala coast, this resort seamlessly blends the warmth of Hawaiian aloha with world-class luxury.
For the golf enthusiasts in the family, the award-winning golf course will be your sanctuary, offering views that might just mess with your concentration. For the kiddos (and honestly, adults too), you’ve got a choice of seven pools. Each of them promises a unique experience, so whether you want a serene dip or some splashy fun, there’s a spot for you.
As for food, prepare for a culinary journey. Remember, over 75% of the food served here is sourced straight from Hawaii Island. So every bite feels like a true Hawaiian embrace. And when the day winds down, retreat to your cozy room in an intimate two-story bungalow. Can you hear the waves already?
2. Turtle Bay Resort: North Shore's Finest
If you've heard tales of O‘ahu's North Shore, they probably didn't do justice to what Turtle Bay Resort brings to the table. Spread over nearly 1,300 acres, this resort is a slice of untouched paradise with historic vibes.
Mornings here could start with a calming walk on five miles of pristine coastline or perhaps with a family hike on one of the twelve miles of trails that promise breathtaking views. Given its expansive space, there’s always a private spot waiting, whether you’re a sunrise enthusiast or a sunset chaser.
Once you’ve soaked in the natural beauty, the resort pulls you back with promises of holistic dining, drawing inspiration from native culinary traditions. And if you're itching for some off-site adventures, Turtle Bay’s location is unbeatable. From the ancient stories of Waimea Valley to the iconic surf breaks that have shaped legends, you're in the heart of it all.
3. Aston Kaanapali Shores: Your Home Away from Home
Beachfront beauty is one thing, but Aston Kaanapali Shores takes it up a notch. Nestled on the golden sands of Kaanapali Beach, this resort is a confluence of comfort and Hawaiian charm.
Every suite feels like a home, and they all include complete kitchens. So if you ever fancy whipping up a quick family breakfast or a midnight snack, you're all set. And for those who prefer being pampered, the in-resort dining, especially at The Beach Club Restaurant, promises island flavors that’ll dance on your taste buds.
But what truly sets this place apart is its cultural heartbeat. Throughout the week, the resort is alive with traditional activities. From hula lessons that’ll get your hips swaying to ukulele tunes that’ll have you humming along, there’s a slice of Hawaii waiting to be discovered. And if you're in the mood for some retail therapy, their Thursday Craft Fair is a treasure trove of local crafts and keepsakes.
4. The Royal Sonesta Kaua'i Resort Lihue: A Royal Hawaiian Retreat
Step into a world where luxury intertwines with the genuine spirit of the Garden Isle. The Royal Sonesta Kaua'i Resort Lihue is a sight to behold, with Kalapaki Beach as its picturesque backdrop. If the name alone doesn't give you a hint of the majestic experience ahead, the resort itself surely will.
Fresh from a whopping $50 million upgrade, every nook and corner of this place radiates charm and sophistication. Each guestroom and suite has been meticulously revamped to offer guests a stay that's nothing short of royal. Imagine waking up to the gentle sound of waves and the sight of the golden sun rising over Kalapaki Bay. Sounds dreamy, right?
Beyond the confines of your room, adventure awaits. Whether you're teeing off at the adjacent Jack Nicklaus championship golf course or unwinding with a sumptuous spa treatment, every moment here feels like a celebration. And oh, for the foodies, the on-site restaurants promise a culinary journey that’s as enchanting as Kauai itself.
5. Hilton Waikoloa Village: Dive into Island Grandeur
Ever dreamt of a place where vastness meets vibrancy? That's Hilton Waikoloa Village for you. One of the world's largest and most splendid resorts, it's a veritable playground of Hawaiian wonders. Nestled amidst a beautiful expanse that includes lagoons, pools, water slides, and more, this is where "larger than life" meets the "aloha spirit".
The guest rooms here are more than just accommodations: they’re a promise of restful nights with dreams filled with Hawaiian lore. As you wander around the resort, you're bound to stumble upon a plethora of restaurants and bars, each offering unique flavors and vibes. From tropical cocktails to hearty Hawaiian meals, your taste buds are in for a treat.
And if the resort's internal charm wasn't enough, its location amplifies its allure. With every sunrise and sunset, the surrounding landscapes narrate tales as old as time, reminding you that while the resort might be a man-made marvel, it's nature that truly holds the magic wand.

CPEC WILL PROVIDE LONG TERM WELFARE FOR LOCAL RESIDENTS
By Qaiser Nawab:https://pakobserver.net/cpec-will-provide-long-term-welfare-for-local-residents-by-qaiser-nawab/
China and Pakistan are all-weather strategic partners. The two countries have formed a rock-solid friendship.
The China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) is a landmark project of the co-construction of the “Belt and Road Initiative” by China and Pakistan, and an important manifestation of the ever-growing “Iron-clad Friendship” between the two countries.
Tumblr media
The CPEC is of over 3000 kilometers, it is a bond, connecting the Silk Road Economic Belt to the north and the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road to the south.
While building a bridge for economic and trade exchanges between China and Pakistan, the CPEC is also constantly enriching the connotation of a China-Pakistan community with a shared future.
In 2013, the CPEC was formally proposed and positioned as a “Four-sphere Integrated” channel and a trade corridor covering roads, railways, oil and gas pipelines, and fiber-optic cables; in 2015, the “1+4” cooperation layout was formed with the construction of the corridor as the center, with emphasis on Gwadar port, energy, infrastructure and industrial cooperation.
In December 2017, the “China-Pakistan Economic Corridor Vision Plan (2017-2030)” was officially released, combining China’s “The Belt and Road Initiative” and Pakistan’s “Vision 2025”.
In December 2017, the “China-Pakistan Economic Corridor Vision (2030)” was officially released, dovetailing China’s “Belt and Road Initiative” and Pakistan’s “Vision 2025”, with a focus on development in areas including connectivity, energy, trade and industrial parks.
CPEC construction bears fruitful results since its start of construction in 2013, the CPEC has created miracles one after another: China-Pakistan cross-border optical cable, Karakoram Highway upgrading and reconstruction project, Karot Hydropower Station, Lahore Rail Transit Orange Line Project, second stage of dam cut-off achieved at the Sugejinaree Hydropower Project, etc.
As of September 2021, the 22 priority projects from the first phase of the CPEC are almost complete, half of which are energy projects. For example, the Port Qasim coal-fired power station, since it entered commercial operation in April 2018, has generated about 10% of the power supply of Pakistan’s national grid.
It is reported that the coal-fired power station will exceed 4.6 billion kWh in 2021. While accelerating its construction as a power supply base, the CPEC also attaches great importance to the development of clean energy.
In November 2021, the Karot Hydropower Station, the first hydropower investment project under the CPEC, has successfully completed the closure of its diversion tunnel and officially started storing water in the reservoir, laying a foundation for the commissioning of subsequent generators.
It is reported that the construction of the Karot Hydropower Station and the Sugijinari Hydropower Station is progressing smoothly, and the construction of the Kohala Hydropower Station project will also begin after the signing of the franchise agreement in May 2021.
During the first phase of construction, China and Pakistan are not only committed to improving energy shortage problems, but also focused on infrastructure constructions.
There are many highlight projects, including Gwadar Port, Lahore Rail Transit Orange Line Project, Karakoram Highway upgrading and reconstruction project Phase-II, China-Pakistan Cross-Border Optical Cable Project, etc. These mass transport infrastructure constructions are of great significance to Pakistan’s economic development.
Thanks to highways and energy infrastructures, an increasing number of Chinese enterprises have come to invest in Pakistan, effectively promoting Pakistan’s economic development and at the same time, laid down a solid foundation for industrial cooperation in the second phase of the corridor.
Under the framework of the CPEC, China and Pakistan have greatly facilitated inter-regional connectivity through the construction of various infrastructure facilities.
Taking Gwadar port in Balochistan as an example, it is not only one of the four key points of the CPEC, but also a pilot project for the co-construction of the “Belt and Road Initiative” between China and Pakistan.
In November 2016, Gwadar port was officially opened, and from this place, the first Chinese commercial ship set sail. From its humble beginnings as a small fishing village, over years of development, Gwadar port gradually turned into a regional logistics hub. Even during the epidemic period, the construction of Gwadar port continued to advance.
It is worth mentioning that Gwadar Port has also created many “firsts” in 2020: for example, the launch of transit trade through Afghanistan, fully showing its transshipment potential; for the first time, it is expected that 10,000 tons of LPG will be shipped to Pakistan each month through Gwadar Port; and it is the first time where commercial operation was realized.
In July 2020, a medium-sized cargo ship loaded with 16,000 tons of chemical fertilizers docked at Gwadar port for the first time, and completed the unloading, warehousing and storage of all goods, this marks the official launch of Afghanistan’s re-export business.
It also shows that the CPEC can be extended to Afghanistan and further to Central Asia. From this point on, Afghanistan and the landlocked countries of Central Asia have a connecting access channel.
Relying on the location advantage and connectivity of Gwadar port, in July 2020, a series of industrial projects such as Gwadar Fertilizer Factory, Gwadar Exhibition Centre and Gwadar Lubricating Oil Factory also started construction in Gwadar port Free Trade Zone. CPEC construction continues to benefit people’s livelihoods.
The changes brought about by the construction of the CPEC are noticeable. According to a 2012 study by PricewaterhouseCoopers, the power shortage has resulted in an average annual loss of $13.5 billion in Pakistan’s GDP.
The shortage of electricity has led to chronic power shortage in Pakistan, with rotating blackouts in all regions of the country, ranging from about 10 hours per day in major cities to 22 hours per day in rural areas, with an average national power shortage of 4,000 megawatts.
Since the construction of the CPEC, Pakistan’s domestic power shortage has been greatly alleviated. According to Pakistan’s CPEC Affairs Bureau, as of January 2022, the total capacity of completed energy projects under the CPEC framework has reached 5.32 million kilowatts.
Khalid Mansoor, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister of Pakistan on CPEC, has said that these power capacities have provided a large amount of residential and industrial electricity, relieving Pakistan from long power outages.
The local impact of the CPEC on Pakistan is also largely reflected in the boosting of local employment.
According to some statistics from the Planning Commission of Pakistan, the early harvest projects of the first phase of the CPEC have created about 38,000 jobs, more than 75 percent of which are local employment, with energy projects creating the most employment, absorbing 16,000 Pakistani workers and engineers in total. In addition, the construction of transportation infrastructure has created about 13,000 jobs. Chinese companies are also actively fulfilling their social responsibility when carrying out project construction.
Starting from 2021, the CPEC has smoothly entered its second phase of construction. The development priorities are also gradually shifting to the industrial sector and expanding agricultural cooperation between the two countries.
Pakistan is an agricultural country with a population of 220 million and with a good location, so it is reasonable for the second phase of the CPEC’s construction to focus on industrial cooperation, with a layout that focuses on sectors such as agriculture, manufacturing and textiles. With the joint efforts of China and Pakistan, CPEC’s constructions keep stepping up to new levels.
China and Pakistan are willing to work together to build the CPEC with the goal of higher standards, sustainability and benefit for people’s livelihood, and accelerate the construction of a closer China-Pakistan community of shared future in the new era.

Hawaii, Finally
I have at last, finally purchased my one way ticket to the Big Island. I cannot wait. That being said if you live anywhere on the island, please reach out. I’d love to meet as many people as possible when I’m there. I’m a 20 year old woman who’s going to work on a family and spend all of my free time hiking or at the beach. Aloha

Sprouting
The month of August was about sprouting into my new home, the ever continuing evolution of myself, leaning into my inner world and connection  with myself, and the love that exists within myself.  Passionately exploring and opening up to the possibility of what exists on the other side of something that might seem really scary, life changing, even paralyzing. Trusting in a new beginning. A new awakening. And what a brand new breath of air, light, and environment can instill in onself.
I explored the island with Nala taking time to recenter and rejuvenate by getting into the natural world, away from others, and close to the ocean and spirit of the island. I headed down south to the southernmost tip of the island, known as Southpoint, where Polynesians first landed on the Hawaiian islands. I stayed at an epic airbnb with a 180 degree view of the ocean in a town called Naalehu. I then traveled up the coast to the Captain Cook area and visited the magical Puʻuhonua o Hōnaunau National Historical Park. Nala and I enjoyed beautiful times on a few beaches overlooking the most gorgeous and other worldly Kealakekua Bay!  In August, I also spent time traveling up north of Kona  heading to the north side of the island along the windy Kohala coast, feeling utterly alive and connected to all the elements. Nala and I were lucky enough to hike down into the most stunning and sacred Polulu valley, frolic in the river, prance in the bright green fairy looking forest, and stare out at the infinite and invigorating waves breaking on the rugged coast, reflecting light that danced back and forth from valley floor to ocean side. I also explored the town of Waimea, full of endless rolling green pastures which extended on for forever leading into the grandiose expansive heights of Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa. I then drove the north east coast home back to Hilo, stunned by all the aliveness of the island and the tropical magic that exists on the Hamakua coast. Back in Hilo town, I began to surf at Honoli’i beach! A huge dream of mine for living in Hawai’i was to be able to surf all the time and develop this incredible passion of mine! When I looked at the Big Island to live, I looked at all the surf spots and asked friends about the surf! That was a huge motivating factor in the desire to live in Hawaii! So I was so excited to finally be able to surf here!!! It had been on my mind everyday since I moved here. I started surfing by borrowing my friend’s board. The first day in the water moved me to almost tears. I jumped in the crystal clear Pacific with views of the green Big Island and flowing river behind me and sea turtles immediately were popping up everywhere! I was in heaven! I literally was in the happiest place I could ever imagine! Surfing with sea turtles?!! What more could a girl ask for!!!  So many locals there were so kind and encouraging and helpful giving my friends and me tips and tricks and even pushes down the line up! Within that week a friendly local offered to sell me one of his 8 ft wavestorms! I was on cloud 9!!!! Finally had my own board so I could surf whenever I wanted! I was in heaven surfing on the gorgeous days at Honoli’i and immediately started developing my surfing skills again!
I had exciting realizations about what I was experiencing and witnessing as a program guide holding a safe space and container for these adolescents to feel their emotions and gain more  control of their inner world and responses. It was so incredibly uplifting to see the process of their emotional growth and regulation after the pain they endured as sensitive beings trying to have their needs met and dealing with the external environments they were in and around in the best way they could. It gave me hope in the future of humanity seeing this desire to feel, process, and heal in this generation of adolescents.

The Xenolith Flow These barren rocks have sat on this site since 1802, when they arrived here after pouring out of Hualalai, one of the volcanoes that compose the main island of Hawaii.
The Big Island of Hawaii is made of 5 volcanoes that today sit above the Pacific Ocean; Mauna Loa and Kilauea are the most active, Mauna Kea and Kohala are older and less active or extinct, and Hualalai is in the middle, between those groups. Hawaiian volcanoes are most active as they’re growing; once they get to about the size of Mauna Loa they slow down and erupt less. Mauna Loa right now erupts once every decade or few decades, Kilauea erupted non-stop for 3 and a half decades, and Hualalai erupts once every few centuries. This lava flow came out of Hualalai and made its way towards the North coast of the Big Island, destroying a few villages in the process. Today, the Kona airport actually is built on part of a lobe of this lava flow – you can see in the distance the difference in darkness between this younger flow and the older, weathered rock it covered. This flow is interesting from a geologic perspective since it is loaded with xenoliths – rocks that are picked up and carried by the flow as it goes. The xenoliths from this flow are made of dunites and gabbros and their presence tells us that there are dunites and gabbros deep within Hawaiian volcanoes. These rocks form as the volcanoes are growing: dunite is a rock rich in the mineral olivine, the first mineral to crystallize from Hawaiian lavas, while Gabbro is made of clinopyroxene and plagioclase, the next two abundant minerals that form from Hawaiian lavas. When the volcano is active and growing, it produces piles of dunite deep in its core when olivine grains form and sink, while the structure of the volcano gets built of rocks that look like gabbros. Late in the volcano’s life, its magma chamber cools off and solidifies, leaving behind a pile of dunite at its bottom with a pile of gabbro on top; the exact same rock chunks being ripped up and carried by this flow as it came through the once active cone. -JBB Image credit: Ken Lund https://flic.kr/p/7U4DoV Read more http://bit.ly/1GKWD1T http://bit.ly/1GMVIio http://bit.ly/1RR8lhA

The creation of adam
Picture Perfect || Accepting
The Creation of Adam: What is your favorite story from Mythology? Do you have any favorite Fables or Fairytales?
Beth closes her eyes and recites the stories by heart.
Kamapua’a and Pele:
Fire and water must rule together.
Life comes from the cascading waterfalls in lush Hamakua and Kohala. Life comes from the fertile green land in the north. Without water, Pele is barren.
In the fertile mountains reigns Kamapua'a, once Pele’s lover. Now pictured as a feral hog, he wasn’t born repulsive. Angry as he appears, he wasn’t born bitter. Pele didn’t always rule. Kamapua'a was born with a heart.
Here is what happened.
Many years before Pele and her family set foot on the island of Hawaii, Kamapua'a was born to Hina, in the cool mountains of Koolau on Oahu.
Hina’s husband Olopana, an influential chief, was already an old man while fair Hina was in the spring of her youth. Dutifully she shared his bed, but her heart longed for her husband’s younger brother Kahiki-ula. She often invited her handsome brother-in-law to go berry-picking. He accompanied her gladly to cool springs and creeks. They talked intimately about the lore of herbs. Olopana, aware of his advancing age, resented their friendship, but didn’t interfere. Only Hina herself knew if Kahiki-ula was also her lover.
When she gave birth, however, Olopana refused to acknowledge the baby-boy as his son.
‘Let Kahiki-ula claim him,’ he said bitterly to his estranged wife. 'I name this child Kamapua'a, or Hog-Child.’ His throat was choked with anger and revenge.
The boy grew up to be extremely handsome, smart and strong. He grew tall, gifted with a powerful and fiery temperament, and blessed with sparkling black eyes. He was god-like, and, born to Hina the Moon, he had god-like skills, able to change appearances and then to duplicate his own appearance around him.
The hatred of his father, which only increased as Olopana witnessed the boy’s talents, hurt the young man deeply. Kamapua'a didn’t understand. He wanted to be loved and accepted. Instead Olopana scorned and mocked.
Hardened by this first cruel blow of fate, Kamapua'a allows anger to take over his soul. He left his home bitter with thoughts of vengeance burdening his young heart.
Kamapua'a found shelter in the hills, and, still carried by his own charisma enlisted a few dozen young men to play hard on his side. Together they plundered and pillaged Olopana’s lands. One day, drunk with new power, Kamapua'a had his upper body and head tattooed in black and menacing designs. He shaved his head, and grew a short black bristle on scalp and chin. He cut himself a short cloak out of the skin of a wild hog, and wore it, hairy side out. Did he look like a hog? Some would say so, but there are no mirrors in the mountains and the ever moving rivers deceive.
After months of ravaging the lands, Kamapua'a was captured. With the help of those who remembered his former beauty, he escaped, and brutally murdered Olopana.
Kamapua'a travelled to Maui. No longer adolescent nor naive, the child in him continued to hunger for a loving father. He found Kahiki-ula, now engaged to Hina.
'I do not know you,’ said Kahiki-ula, 'I have no son.’
If Kamapua'a held any lingering feelings of compassion, hope, or love, they were swallowed by the black deluge of bitterness. From now on Kamapua'a plundered, killed and ravaged without discrimination, changing himself into the true appearance of a wild hog as he pleased, and seducing women as he desired.
One day his boat harboured in one of the lush green valleys between Waipio and Pololu on the Big Island of Hawaii. Kamapua'a travelled south towards the crater of Kilauea. Here he heard about a gorgeous young woman, Pele, who had come to the volcano with her sister Hi'iaka and two brothers, Moho and Kamakaua. Stories spread about Pele’s beauty matched only by her fiery temperament. Kamapua'a, intrigued, found her, saw her, and fell deeply in love.
'Love me. Be my wife,’ he pleaded. He didn’t know how repulsive and hideous the black tattoos and the stubble are to her. All he knew was that he wanted to be loved, still, always and forever.
Pele turned away in disgust. 'You are a pig and nothing but the son of a pig,’ she shrieked. Kamapua'a, his hurt digging ever deeper, shut off his heart one more time. In anger he decided that if she would not welcome him gladly as her partner, he would submit her forcefully as his friend. He planned an attack with his companions. Kamapua'a and Pele each invoke their own gods, those of storm and rain, those of fire, those of love, forgiveness and fate.
'If you drown me with water, you will still not have me as a woman,’ she laughed.
'If you burn me with fire, your own barrenness will starve you,’ he retorted.
In the deadlock of their destiny, Pele yielded. Then Kamapua'a embraced her, and his anger vanished. While they lay as lovers, he became again beautiful, soft, intelligent and strong. For a few glorious moments Kamapua'a breathed as the man he was meant to be. In the arms of Pele he came home to the love he so needed and he gave to her the love that no one wanted.
But Pele was afraid and confused by this sudden transformation and she withdrew as soon as their bodies sought distance from each other.
'Not again,’ she whispered. 'Leave me alone. I came here to be queen. But you are more powerful than I. Stay away. Take the lush green valleys of Hilo, Hamakua, and Kohala. Keep them wet and fertile. I’ll stay here in Ka'u and Kona and balance your rain with the fire of the sun.’
She slipped away from him, hiding herself and her family in the tunnels and caverns of Kilauea. Kamapua'a called and called. As if in answer, the earth shook. When Kamapua'a looked up the slope, he saw hot lava streaming down. The molten stone, slithering towards him, set bushes and trees ablaze on its relentless course. With intense horror and dismay Kamapua'a realised that his beloved Pele would be buried underneath the lava. 'Aye, Pele, good-bye!,’ he exclaimed as he fled and plunged into the ocean, seeking respite from the burning earth. He swam the ocean in the form of a fish now named after him, humuhumunukunukuapua'a.
He knew that Kohala, eternally moist with rain, was his to rule, even if he would never set foot on the land of Hawaii again.
Did he know that Pele didn’t perish in the flow? Three seasons later she gave birth to their child, Opelu’nuikau’haalilo. This child became the ancestor of certain chiefs and common people.
Pele, sensing the magnitude of Kamapua'a shining through in the child, now missed her lover deeply. How she longed for his cooling presence. Her love chants, heard across the mountains, remain in vain.
Kamapua'a reigns without ever returning to land. He protects the pigs in Kohala. He protects the abundance of Hawaii by roaming the falls. But more than anything, he protects the pain of a wounded heart.
