Leucaena leucocephala, is a marvel tree. It has many benefits and grows vigorously. But if you dont already have it then better think twice. Its just too good at what it does. The leaves are 25-30% protein, but can only be eaten by ruminants after an adjustment phase. You'd need to innoculate 10% of the herd with a rumen microbe that eats the toxic alkaloid mimosine. It was isolated from Indonesian goats. With this microbe Cattle and goats can eat it freely, and cows have been recorded gaining 1.7kg per day body mass feeding on pure Leucaena. Goats can put on over 100g per day A hectare of Leucaena can fatten 5 cows, or 40 goats, versus 0.3 or 2.4 on regular pasture It fixes large amounts of Nitrogen from the atmosphere and with it a lot of carbon. The soil beneath the trees becomes rich and full of humus. It can be coppiced for firewood Its roots forage down up to 8 metres and can use quite brackish groundwater. It would be perfect. If it were not so weedy. Its such a strong competitor for light, water, nutrients and space that it can outcompete most other vegetation We have some infestations on Tampah hills and its going to be a multi year process to eradicate them. Its one of just 5 environmental weeds we have. I dont use that term lightly, but a handful of plants fit the bill. To start we slash all growth, and lop adult trees to one metre, these coppice and we can cut for mulch without letting it seed again. Then the young trees can be chipped out with a hoe. Im glad it doesnt sucker from the roots, thats a small mercy. Root suckering would make it invincible! Eventually we will grub out the main stem. The seeds will continue to sprout for several years so its an ongoing procedure. Once the closed forest gets a foothold then its finally outcompeted by shading We have a commitment to not using herbicides in Tampahhills, so we will outsmart the plants by finding their weaknesses If you have Leucaena, you must manage and use it.
