[Spoilers for Hellblazer: Dead in America #4]
Tumblr media
Absolutely loving Spurrier's writing of John Constantine's humour and attitude in "Hellblazer: Dead in America" (2024)
Tumblr media
Swamp thing is having none of John's nonsense right now.
Tumblr media
And Nat continues to be absolutely 100% awesome. Love her.
Spurrier and Co. not doing too bad with her accent, either. People tend to overdo the Glasgow accent in writing. Although, "bint" is not so common here tbh. "You'se" is on point, though. Make myself cringe with that all the time.
Tumblr media
Look at them. Pair of absolute twats.
Tumblr media
Every panel of Aaron Campbell's is a bloody frameable work of art.

I'm so excited to see where Noah's story is going and I'm so nervous for him. I bet he already suspects what John's not telling him. Poor guy.

I really like how John and Noah's relationship has been written so far. It's a very common storyline to give a complicated male protagonist a child to take care of and make him a father figure - and i don't necessarily mind it, i love well-written parent-child relationships. But i feel it's sometimes done in a way that's shallow, cliched and overly cute. I feel especially with John it would've been really ooc to portray him as a traditional caring and good dad, so i'm happy they're going more realistic and nuanced route. John doesn't really have any paternal instincts; being in a parental role or showing affection doesn't come naturally to him. He doesn't hate children and dislikes when they're hurt, but he hasn't usually been portrayed as someone who wants to have children himself. He never wanted something like this and doesn't know how to act.
John obviously cares about Noah deeply and is quite protective of him, but the way he shows (and often doesn't show) it is very practical and blunt. The way he talks to him is often rude and a mix of how he would talk to an adult and how you might to talk a younger child, because he isn't accustomed to dealing with teens. His feelings toward Noah are centered around his guilt and regret. Noah's safety and future are clearly constantly on his mind, and knowing how selfish John can be it's notable that he seems to be more worried about Noah than himself. This prioritizing his son over himself is probably the closest he can get to how a parent should act, but i don't think he'll ever be even remotely good father or enjoy being in that role or find it natural

hoping noah ikumelo doesn't hear about that alternate universe where john drops everything to raise his child after her mother dies in an accident

So, I just fell head first into the Constantine fandom (much to my husband's abject glee). I've written him a couple times for a couple crossover fics, but this time I wrote an entire DC only fic.
Bad Deals and Teddy Bears
This is set after the 2019 Hellblazer run. So after John finds out Noah is his son. For my fic, Noah gets hit by a spell and de-aged to 9 years old, specifically the night that his mother was attacked. John suddenly has a small child he has to find a way to protect, and not attract attention until he can get them somewhere safe. Nearly 17k words, John's POV (almost entirely). Includes John's self-recriminations, mentions of his father, Noah's teddy bear, Noah's jumbled memories, and lots of father and son naps and cuddles.

I am not an artist. I cannot draw for shit. Even my tracing looks juvenile. I understand that art is not easy, that being 'talented' is more skill/training than anything else, but I am losing my mind reading Hellblazer: Dead in America just like when I read Hellblazer 2020.
Why is the art team incapable of drawing Noah with a consistent face? Why does he always look like a 30 year old man or a weird doodle? His skin tone is always different (and yes, I am aware that time of day/lighting would make a difference, but the art team is able to be consistent with the white characters).
I have bitched about whole pages of different issues being near illegible thanks to filters and extremely dark coloring, but that's not what's happening with Noah. Why does he keep changing? If there was a single other black person in Dead in America at this point, I might actually struggle knowing who's who, simply because his face is always different.
I get that drawing is hard, but they couldn't have picked a celebrity or someone to use as inspo? Fuck, I would deal with Noah looking like he's thirty instead of sixteen if his face was consistent and didn't look like something I could draw.

Noah ikumelo. . .
Are.. you asking my opinion on him? I really need to reread the Spurrier run before it comes back because it's been a good while. I remember liking him well enough. But I always have mixed feelings on John having bio kids
