27. Accidentally Sleeping In - Deacon/SoSu
(I don’t talk about it much, but I do headcanon that Deacon is my first runthrough, Noa Cassidy’s love)
the Radstorm had hit without warning– Deacon hoped to reach the farm by morning, but with them stranded and running low on Rad-x’s and Radaways, he had to agree with the illustrious Whisper– finding shelter had ultimately been the right move. Now, however, he was stuck in a careful predicament; He’d awoken to find her cuddled up to his chest on the single dirty mattress they’d found, in this small broken down cabin in the woods.
Exhaustion makes a fool of everyone eventually, and last night was no different. What seemed like a good idea at the time now felt like piece a muttfruit on the junk (thanks for that imagery, McCready)– sounds sexy at first, but ultimately the whole thing kinda goes burn-y and painful.
He dare not shift, for fear she’d wake, and give him that look– with those sweet, kind eyes.
His heart hammered in his chest. Damn it, not now.
With how many agents the Railroad went through, was it really worth the entanglement?
What if he died?
Christ, what if she did?
Besides, she was still looking for her son– and her husband’s killers– fuck.
Her husband. She never talked about it, but he knew she was still hurting from that one. Not that he wasn’t hurting with his own romantic shit, but… he knew what it was like to struggle with loss.
A loud moo from a wandering brahmin caused Whisper to stir, much to his chagrin. He attempted to hush the creature, but the deed was done– Whisper blinked slowly, allowing the sunlight to filter in through the broken slats of the wall.
“What time is it?” She groaned quietly, her eyes scrunching tightly shut.
“Sun’s been up for a while,” Deacon shrugged, his eyes focusing in on the pillow of her lips despite himself.
“Shit. Why’d you let me sleep that long?” Whisper shot up like a bullet, cranking the dial on her pipboy and checking what supplies were still usable this morning.
“It seemed like a good idea at the time,” he said, catching her gaze.
There it was; that look, with those eyes.
His heart ached.
“We should get going though,”
“Lead on, Deacon. I’m with you,” She nodded.
That’s what I was afraid you’d say, was all his brain could muster.

57 for delaney/johnny or 40 for noa/kaidan? 🥺
40. "Don't leave yet."
Kaidan wakes to the sound of glass shattering, and a wet dog shoving at his jaw.
He jolts awake at the intrusion, instincts burning and pulling at the dark matter in his veins before he has even got his eyes fully open. Bruno stumbles off Kaidan’s chest at the stench of eezo that has started to seep from his skin. The curtains shift across the room in the evening breeze. His eyes catch on the shadows that stretch across the floor towards him, the muscles in his back tensing.
Kaidan breathes, once, twice. Cools the burn to a distant hum. Lets his eyes fade from blue to brown until he feels settled in his own skin again. Bruno whines from the side of the bed, low in the back of his throat, and Kaidan settles a reassuring hand on the mutt’s head as he heaves himself from beneath their too-thin sheets. The plush carpet digs between his toes, and he tries to find comfort in the feeling like he knows normal people would.
Small steps, or however the saying goes. He’ll keep pretending until it sticks.
Bruno whines again, pulling Kaidan back to the present, before slowly wandering back to the ensuite. Right. The sound of glass scattering on tiles echoes through the ajar doorway. Kaidan doesn’t need to check the bed to know Noa isn’t in it.
He doesn’t panic and forces himself to walk rather than run the five or six steps. Bruno has pulled to a stop just outside the bathroom, his ears low on his head. Kaidan pats him again as he gently nudges the door open.
“Noa?”
She’s sprawled in a mess of water and glass, and if Kaidan rubs at the sleep in his eyes, he can see some blood speckled on the white tiles. Her skin glows with sweat in the dimmed lighting. The scarring is still just this side too bright, too raw, where it criss-crosses her bare torso and limbs. A still-healing skin graft here, a restitched limb there. From this angle, twisted as she is, the red of her cybernetics almost burns through the worn skin at the seam of her shoulder. His eyes, as always catch on her ribs where they dig at her skin, and Kaidan reminds himself to just breathe.
Her eyes stay planted on her hands where they’re splayed in front of her, shaking so badly he can hear her nails tapping against the floor.
Kaidan tugs a towel from behind the door and immediately moves to gather some of the glass with it. His knee protests as he crouches, but he ignores the ache, even if he’ll probably regret it tomorrow. Too bad.
The two of them sit in silence for what feels like an hour. Kaidan busies himself gathering up the glass shards; it was a glass of water, judging by the small trails of it that are snaking their way around Noa’s feet, one organic and one artificial. He eyes her hands discreetly as he cleans, but the damage seems minimal.
“I’m sorry,” she eventually murmurs. She still hasn’t moved besides to keep shaking herself apart at the seams.
Kaidan wants to touch her. He throws the bundle of towels and glass into the corner instead. “It’s okay.”
Noa slams her already-bleeding palm flat against the tiles, and Kaidan doesn’t need to look to know the veins on her neck are bulging against her clenched jaw. “I just – I just –”
More blood has spilled onto the floor now, a slow trickle of it running down the inside of her wrist. Kaidan gently reaches for her hand, half expecting to have to fight her for it, but all Noa’s fight was left in orbit six months ago, and she relents. A shard of glass juts out of her skin. She doesn’t flinch when he pries it out.
He keeps her palm held lightly in his own and smooths out the worry etched on his face. “Do you want me to go?
Last night, she’d said yes.
The night before that, too.
It’s the routine they’ve found themselves in ever since she was discharged a month ago. He offers himself as a crutch, and she shoves it away only to stumble to her knees and curse him for it. Kaidan deludes himself that Bruno is helping, even if Noa had spat that he was just another spectator to her downfall the day after they’d brought the dog home.
Kaidan just holds her bleeding hand and stares at the green of her eyes when she lifts her head to look at him and hopes. It’s all his old, stitched-back-together heart can manage anymore; loving Noa, and hoping for Noa. One in the same now, really.
The fight is worth it. Always was, always will be.
A tear tracks down Noa’s freckled cheek as she whispers, “Don’t leave.”
“I’m not going anywhere,” Kaidan says, swallowing around his heart. He gingerly brushes the hair from her eyes. It’s getting long. “How’s your other hand?”
This time at least, when he holds out his hand for hers, she gives it to him.

1 and 37 for kaidan and noa maybe? 💖
SHIP ASK MEME
1. how do they fall asleep? wake up? any daily rituals?
sleep is hard for both of them, especially post-war. noa shakes herself awake at 4am just as the sun is creeping towards the horizon most mornings, if she even slept at all, and while kaidan has trained himself to sleep for at least four or five hours a night, he very rarely wakes refreshed. noa tends to lie on her back staring at the ceiling most nights and kaidan will dig himself against her side with all their sheets and blankets wrapped around him.
if kaidan has the time in the morning he'll work out with noa (which post war, consists of a brisk walk or maybe a light jog with their rescue dog bruno, if she's feeling up for it). he always cooks, even if noa struggles to keep the food down some mornings, and noa always makes them their coffee because if she doesn't have a Task she'll start caving in on herself. kaidan lets her be, and just kisses her on the shoulder before heading to the admiralty board or a council meeting (it depends on the day).
37. how much would they be willing to sacrifice for the other? any lines they refuse to cross?
both of them have fairly steadfast morals, kaidan moreso, but in saying that they'd also do a hell of a lot to protect each other. noa is more likely to compromise herself to keep him safe, is more likely to sacrifice something she couldn't really stand to lose, but there are still lines even for her. she likes to think she'd put him first above everything and anything, and maybe she would - the galaxy has always come first though for noa, above rules and other people's opinions and her own life, so i don't think she'd sacrifice the world for him. it would be a close thing though.
kaidan just wants to see her safe and whole and happy, but there are deep rigid lines in the sand that he will not step over, not even for noa. thankfully he's never been in a situation where that belief has been tested, not really. leaving her behind on earth was hard, but he still did it. he wouldn't have sacrificed the lives of her entire crew just for the chance to save her, no matter how much he might have wanted to. the lives of the many over the lives of the few and all that.

ivy & hollyhock for the one taking up the most brain space right now! x
let’s do noa!
ivy :   what are your muse’s views on marriage ? do they believe it is something strictly for love ,   or an institution rooted in business   &   social benefits ?do they desire or have they desired to be married ?
noa never really saw herself ever getting married, because she never saw the point - love was always something foreign to her. she saw one slapdash wedding growing up, but it ended in a firefight and one of the groomsmen bleeding out from a hole between his eyes, so 🤷‍♀️. even once she reconciles with her feelings for kaidan and they settle into something more solid, the idea of marrying him doesn’t really occur to noa. kaidan probably asks once, if she’d like to, but she doesn’t see the need to sign a piece of paper. why should she need to prove she loves him to anyone but them?
hollyhock :   how strong is your muse’s sense of ambition ?what’s something they strive for in life ?
fairly strong. it didn’t really kick in until anderson dragged her off to the alliance on the verge of her 18th birthday, and once she stopped fighting the system and realised how Good she was at a lot of things, the ambition appeared. she wanted to be the best at everything and anything she could get her hands on - wanted her body and mind honed beyond perfection, so there was no doubt she was the best of them. it’s why she progressed through the ranks and got accepted into the n7s so quickly - she tore through the villa, beat or wrecked every test that was thrown at her, until she was standing at the top of pile demanding more.

86 for noa/kaidan? 🥺
86. "I love waking up next to you." || ~1000 words || READ ON AO3
Their bedroom smelt of petrichor and baby powder when Noa woke at 2am.
The bed shifted under her as she twisted towards the sound of Asher stirring, the static of rain against the roof thundering through the room. A soft blue glow washed over the bassinet shoved beside the bed and Noa smiled with a huff, despite the late hour and chill wind sweeping through the open window in the corner, at the writhing form of Asher in his swaddle.
She hadn’t been asleep anyway, had been lying staring at the ceiling while absently picking at an old, silvered scar that ran along the inside of her forearm. Kaidan was spread beside her, three quarters of their blankets draped over him after he’d tugged them from her during the night – a bona fide thief if she’d ever seen one. A crack of lightening had illuminated their little yard through the darkness, and Asher had woken, whether in spite of or with the storm she wasn’t sure.
“Come here, little man,” Noa whispered, gently lifting him into her arms. The angle was awkward enough that she once would have winced at the way her ribs caught but the injury was far enough in the past that it didn’t bother her anymore. Asher barely cracked open his eyes, instead scrunching his face in a way that looked almost painful as he squirmed in his swaddle again.
Shifting to sit back against their headboard with Asher cradled between her arms and knees was almost second nature at this point. He took to the bottle with little resistance, only a few gurgled cries echoing through the room before he realised what the object held before his face was. The little sharks on his swaddle glowed silver like her forearm every time lightning struck outside. The storm didn’t seem to bother Asher as much as it did his mother.
This routine, of waking and feeding and waking, was both foreign and familiar to Noa. The lack of sleep was an old friend to her, insomniac that she was, but the love and affection that soaked every moment of her existence that she shared with the bundle of wrinkles and gurgles and shark-printed pyjamas was an entirely new beast for her to tackle.
Never had she held anything as breakable and innocent as Asher. Her hands were meant for bearing weapons of mass destruction, for cradling the galaxy despite the way it burned – she worried, even now, that she would taint his pure skin with the blood stains and scorch marks on her palms. His tanned skin was so untouched by the world, his fingers so pure where they clutched at the bottle.
She could stare at him and his innocence forever. Her son. Her son. What a strange, wonderful concept.
“All good?”
Noa turned, careful not to jostle Asher from his ever-important task of eating, to see Kaidan staring up at her from his pillow. His hair fell haphazardly across his forehead, curls indignant against the humidity of the storm raging outside. The squint of his eyes was a near mirror of the face Asher had made mere moments before and Noa’s heart ached at the sight.
She just nodded at Kaidan, indulging in her still-warm heart by freeing a hand and brushing some curls from his face. “Morning.”
“Yeah,” he whispered, a lopsided smile stretching his jaw as he stared at her and Asher in turn. “Did the rain wake him?”
“I think his stomach did.”
Kaidan rolled onto his back, blankets tangling around his waist and legs as soft laughter bubbled up his throat. Noa smiled as he dragged a hand over his face, tousling the curls she’d just brushed aside. “Can’t blame him for that, I guess.”
Noa wiped at Asher’s lips with a cloth as he spat up excess formula. Even with his hands securely tucked against his small chest, she could feel him trying to settle back into a comfortable position against her thighs. In the twenty minutes it had taken for him to drink his fill, the cybernetic connection at her hip had begun to ache a little. She reminded herself to find a better position tomorrow night.
“There we go,” she muttered as she burped him, even if the process took longer because of his sleep-addled state. “Good job, little man.”
Asher was well and truly asleep by the time she leant over to place him back in his bassinet. His skin was so soft when she ran her thumb along his forehead, the inklings of dark hair starting to grow from his scalp. More lightening cracked, painting them in silver and blue. She could feel as Kaidan snaked a hand out to rub at the exposed scarring along her bare torso.
“Come here,” he mumbled, as sleep addled as their son.
Noa let him pull her back towards him on the bed, smiling through the gloom. “Kaidan . . .”
“Don’t Kaidan me. You are not getting out of this bed until the sun has risen.”
His threat was dampened by the way he couldn’t keep his eyes open. “That trick doesn’t work anymore, old man.”
“Yeah well, can’t blame me for trying.”
Noa shifted to lay on her back again, this time with Kaidan pressed against her side. He stared at her through half lidded eyes from his pillow. The rain continued to rattle against the roof, the sound of water splashing in Bruno’s likely-overflowing water bowl echoing in from the yard. Despite the early hour and miserable weather, Noa could already hear the tell-tale song of birds in the air.
A yawn cracked open Kaidan’s jaw. “Just try, for me? I like waking up to the sunrise and you.”
“No promises.”
Kaidan stretched to plant a kiss on her shoulder, apparently deciding he’d won. Her skin tingled with ozone and love. Asher gurgled in his sleep beside the bed, by far the loudest sleeper of the three of them, which was saying something considering the soft snores that had already started to slip from Kaidan. Noa tugged back a few sheets that he’d stolen earlier, stared at the ceiling, and resolved herself to at least try and get some more sleep before the sun started inching through the curtains or Asher stirred again.
She had a fair idea which would happen first.
Noa couldn’t find it in her battered, stitched-back-together heart to mind.

42, 47 & 49 for Noa!
42. what are their goals? what would they sacrifice anything for? what is their secret ambition?
things have changed a lot for noa, over the years. her main goal used to be survival (on the streets, in the gang, in those early days of alliance training with anderson breathing down her neck), and then to achieve excellence (in her body, her skills, her rank - in everything and anything she could get her hands on). both of those things are still somewhat important to her, but i think more than anything she just wants to protect her loves ones, and the galaxy at large even if they’re shortsighted jackasses half the time. she’d give up everything she is for her people, for the galaxies people - does give everything she is, twice actually. in the end, protection was her biggest goal of all.
i think the only secret ambition she ever had was to feel loved, to find it and hold it in her own hands, but that was a secret even to herself for such a long time before kaidan came along and gut-punched her with his affection.
47. how do they act in a formal occasion? what do they think of black tie wear? do they enjoy fancy parties and love to chit chat or loathe the whole event?
she’s not particularly fond of formal events because that usually means a lot of networking and smiling at people who she’d rather punch in the face (like politicians), but she can hold herself back long enough to get a few good photo ops and make the brass (or anderson) happy. the free food and opportunity to wear something appropriately scandalous always makes up for the boring conversations. also, she’ll be much more enthusiastic if she can drag someone (usually kaidan) along with her.
49. what is their most valued object? are they sentimental? is there something they have to take everywhere with them?
she’s not that sentimental honestly - growing up on the streets with nothing but the clothes your back will do that to you. she still has the pocket knife that a gang member almost gutted her with when she was thirteen, blunt metal and fading purple engravings and all, and she’s fairly fond of her widow sniper rifle too. her dog tags count as well, i guess, but she wears them out of habit more than anything even once she retires from active service (she’s had one of kaidan’s since he rejoined the crew in me3, and doesn’t like to take it off).
if anything, the “object” she’s most sentimental about is the normandy. she struggles to give that and her crew up more than any inanimate object.

kaidan like explicitly tells noa that he’s not the kind of guy to sleep around or take sex lightly, and instead of her realising that he’s interested in her emotionally as well as physically and making the effort to meet him halfway there, she instead takes it as a challenge to get him into bed

6, 15, 34, 41, 48 for two ships that you're feelin' lately!
6. what do they argue about?
noa x kaidan — not a lot. they clashed a bit about cerberus, about morality and how far you’d go to save a cause, but neither of their hearts were ever truly in it despite the facades of anger and hurt they put up. post war they argue a bit about futures and jobs and petty, small things like burnt toast or leaving the washing piled in the bathroom, but it’s almost a luxury to be able to argue about such mundane things after everything, and it’s never heated.
rhian x dietrich — they rarely argue. rhian is too concerned with putting kindness and empathy out into the world to possibly snap at him, especially when she’s just grateful to have been given another chance at love. it doesn’t mean he doesn’t frustrate her sometimes, but it never lasts.
15. where was their first date?
noa x kaidan — their first official date was the canon lunch at the citadel, actually. they don’t do dates too often, but kaidan likes spoiling her sometimes (especially post war), and they go out every so often. it’s never particularly formal, just an excuse to have a nice meal surrounded by normal people and pretend they’re normal, too.
rhian x dietrich — i’m not sure. i don’t know if they ever really did the dating thing, or if their relationship just blossomed over shared time on the road and quiet evenings at inns or the cottage.
34. how do their past relationships affect them?
noa x kaidan — noa never really understood love, or wanted it, and the fact that she’d slept with most of her fellow gang members in LA or n7 candidates at the villa spoke to that. casual sex and one night stands and friends with benefits were her main source of relationships for essentially her entire life, with a long term partner or lover not feasible or realistic (and also terrifying). it was one of the main reasons things didn’t become serious, in the sense of being anything other than comrades who slept with each other that one time, for such a long time.
rhian x dietrich — as much as she tries to distance herself from him and the grief that he brings with him, rhian carries dmitri with her everywhere. it gets significantly better, when there are years between her and that mud-soaked hill and she tries to not let it change her or govern her affections, and she does a fairly good job at it. he always lingers, though, like an old wound that twinges every so often.
41. how do their flaws clash?
noa x kaidan — despite her training and discipline, noa has a tendency to let her emotions get the better of her and to lash out in rage. there’s been many moments when she’s killed someone just a little too brutally, or put a foot a little too far over the line. kaidan is fairly stalwart in his morals and beliefs, but stronger than that is his loyalty to noa. he can accept that she does things differently, or does things wrong sometimes, but he’ll talk it out with her and move on instead of lingering on it.
rhian x dietrich — he has a tendency to keep to himself, to grouch and isolate himself, but it doesn’t really bother rhian; if anything, it just endears him to her more. she’s never minded the effort.
48. what was their biggest fight about?
noa x kaidan — i want to say that fight on eden prime, when she walked out of the smoke alive but red-rimmed, put back together but not quite right, with a cerberus insignia on her chest. in many ways it was the worse, was the thing that kept them on different sides of a conflict and away from each other, but i think post war there’s an especially terrible fight. she’s on the verge of breaking apart at the seams, has broken and been put back together for the second time, except this time it hurts and she’s alone and the war’s supposedly won and kaidan is too soft and too scared of hurting her anymore than she already is and .... she snaps. screams at him, tears and spit and all. tells him to leave but he doesn’t, he could never leave her. she calls joker an hour later, and he comes past their little house and picks her up while kaidan just sits on the couch with his head in his hands. she stays with jeff for a week before coming home, still tear-streaked but resolute, and even if it’s hard they’re okay.
rhian x dietrich — i’m not sure. i don’t think they’re really the kind of couple to fight a lot, but i’m sure there’s been at least one fight. my mind is blanking though.

1, 4, 6 for magdalena/joseph and one other pairing of your choosing!
i’ll do noa x kaidan as well then!
1. how many kids do they want? do they have kids already?
maggie x joseph— i don’t think either of them ever wanted kids, or at least maggie never considered it an option and joseph didn’t think he’d be given another chance at it (love, family, etc.), but in the end i think they both settle for wanting a large family. it’s totally not because they feel so alone with just the two of them, totally not because there’s no one else left and they feel the need to surround themselves with love and family. of course not. (ouch). they end up with three, two girls and a boy.
noa x kaidan— kaidan had always wanted kids, a family man at heart, but the idea was terrifying to noa, although she’d never admit it. she didn’t know the first thing about kids, didn’t know how to properly raise a child, didn’t have parents to ask advice from or her own childhood as an example of what to do (if anything it was an example about how to raise a kid wrong). after the war though, when she’s all-but kicked out of active service and suddenly has her whole life ahead of her with kaidan, the idea becomes something she could grasp, if she wanted. eventually her and kaidan have asher.
4. do they go overboard with buying baby clothes?
maggie x joseph — not really, especially with how limited resources are post-bombs and how anti-materialism joseph is. they have enough to be practical.
noa x kaidan — noa definitely has to rein kaidan in on one shopping trip when he gets stuck staring at all the tiny shoes and socks. she lets him buy one pair of each. (noa doesn’t want to spoil asher, doesn’t want him to grow up ungrateful - she knows what it’s like to grow up with nothing, and while she wants him to have the world she doesn’t want to ruin his humility in the process).
6. what did they dress up their baby(ies) for their first halloween?
maggie x joseph — again, i doubt halloween is even celebrated much once all the kids are born. their son definitely runs around the montana hillside dressed in a wolf fur terrorising his sisters. joseph lets it slide because it reminds him of jacob and makes him smile. i think that’s the extent of dress ups in the seed household though.
noa x kaidan — as a younger kid asher definitely wants to dress up as his mum for halloween, in his own little n7 armour with shepard-alenko drawn on the breastplate in sharpie. he wears the outfit for a solid two weeks, neither kaidan or noa able to get him out of it afterwards.

8 & 10 for rhian & noa?
8. how do they celebrate their baby(ies) 1st birthday(s)?
rhian— she spoils them, more than she normally would anyway. lots of cuddles and kisses, a trip to the market maybe or to see the baby ducks by the lake. she would do anything for them, honestly.
noa— i imagine she and kaidan don’t go to much trouble for it. a small thing, in the back yard of their house with a few close friends and family. they don’t start really getting into birthdays until asher is older and more likely to remember it.
10. What type of personalities do their kid(s) have?
rhian — one of the twins is definitely a lot shyer and quieter than the other, a lot more prone to sit reading in bed or stay close to rhian and dietrich at gatherings/events rather than socialising. the other twin (who i’m imagining as a girl) makes up for her sibling with rowdiness and enthusiasm, always moving, always asking questions, deeply curious and enamoured by the world around her. she also inherits her mother’s teasing nature, much to dietrich’s dismay, although it’s usually 2v2 instead of 3v1. the other twin is definitely a daddy’s little boy/girl.
noa — i imagine he’s a good mix of his parents, leaning a bit towards noa. stubborn, brash, feels like he needs to excel at everything he does. from the outside it looks like asher takes after his mum more, but beyond the slight buzzing energy and gruffness he also has a deep-sated empathy and anxiety about him that he subconsciously inherited from kaidan. he definitely feels a bit pressured to do well, more so because of who his parents are, even if noa and kaidan make sure to raise him as normally as they can. some things are inevitable.

1,2,23,24,34,36,37,39,40-47 for whomever you want! (sorry if that's too much™ fhfnfn) 🌹☀💕
hmm … i’ll do this for lana/ortega and noa/kaidan cause i haven’t talked about either of them in a while and i miss them!!
1. who wakes up first?
lana x ortega— lana barely sleeps at all, and is also too anxious about ortega and being in bed with him, so she’s always fully dressed and smoking on his little balcony with a coffee long before he drags himself out of bed every morning. it surprises both of them when ortega gets up and finds she hasn’t left entirely.
noa x kaidan— both of them are early risers from habit, but kaidan comes to treasure his sleep a bit more post-war. noa is always still up at sunrise, even if she stays in bed for a bit.
2. who wants to stay in bed just a little longer?
lana x ortega— sleep scares more than comforts lana, so ortega. his job and life and everything is so tiring sometimes, and he enjoys when he can sleep in a bit.
noa x kaidan— kaidan, and it only gets worse post-war when the responsibilities on both their shoulders aren’t as stiff.
23. who is better with kids?
lana x ortega— i think they’d both be disasters with kids, lana more so, although i think ortega would do better. he’s a bit gentler, a bit more caring and open with his emotions. i wouldn’t put a kid within a hundred metres of lana, she’s barely holding herself together at this point.
noa x kaidan— kaidan is naturally an amazing father when they get around to it, and takes to it so quickly it almost gives noa whiplash. she’d known he’d always wanted a family, but it still surprises her a little just how patient and understanding and good he is with kids. noa is a bit more rough around the edges, struggling to be Soft and Calm and quietly worrying about raising a kid, but she ends up being a pretty good parent in the end too. it just takes her a bit longer to get the hang of it.
24. who’s the better cook?
lana x ortega— ortega, definitely. if given the choice lana (and ortega) would always prefer he cooked.
noa x kaidan— kaidan’s objectively better because he had extensive training in it, but noa’s actually alright herself. she just detests it, and would rather eat out or have kaidan cook than sit around making a meal for an hour. she doesn’t have the patience for it.
34. do they go on dates? what are they like?
lana x ortega— not really. lana hates the publicity of it, and ortega is happy just to be spending time with her and doesn’t really need the formality of a date. the closest they ever get is going to one of ortega’s dingy diners that he likes, or meeting at hq.
noa x kaidan— noa isn’t really into it, but kaidan is nothing if not a gentleman and persuades her to let him take her on a few over the years. a nice dinner, a trip to the casino; any excuse for them to get out and enjoy seeing the other dressed up and pretend to be normal. they usually spend the whole time talking and drinking and eating (and making people stare because of their high profile and also they’re hot), and just checking in with each other. also, there’s always sex afterwards when they tear the nice clothes off.
36. which one is the secret snuggler?
lana x ortega— ortega would do anything to hold her against him every night and just kind of .. wrap himself all around her (he’s big enough and she’s small enough that it’s relatively easy to do), but lana isn’t really into such intimate physical contact. it makes her uncomfortable, less so with ortega but it’s still a work in progress, so they keep it to a minimum.
noa x kaidan— it’s kaidan. it’s always been kaidan. especially after he gets her back (both in me3 and post-war).
37. which one offers their jacket to the other when they complain they feel cold?
lana x ortega— ortega wouldn’t offer so much as be nosy about if she’s cold or not because he’s far too perceptive for his own good, but he’d be the one doing it if one of them had too. lana is too small for anything to possibly fit ortega, and also would just tease him about how he should have brought a jacket/jumper.
noa x kaidan— kaidan would offer, and noa would make a jibe about him being all proper and gentlemanly, but she’d probably still take the offered jacket. i like the image of her in a nice dress and his suit jacket.
39. who leaves little notes in the other one’s lunch?
lana x ortega— ortega because he’s nosy and a bit intrusive like that.
noa x kaidan— i can’t really picture either of them doing this, but kaidan is the only one working so technically noa i guess?
40. who is the most affectionate?
lana x ortega— ortega by a mile, although if you know what to look for it’s easy to tell lana has a soft spot for him too. she’s less brittle, less fractured and quick to lash out with ortega, as conflicting as her feelings are.
noa x kaidan— initially it was kaidan, mostly because noa wasn’t as used to the whole romance thing as him, but she comes to be really affectionate with him in her own way. throwing an arm around her, kissing him on the forehead, offering to rub his feet when he gets home after a long day.
41. who is the big spoon/little spoon?
lana x ortega— lana little spoon, ortega big spoon. always.
noa x kaidan— it changes depending on how they’re feeling, and if one needs comfort or not. noa likes big spooning but also doesn’t mind being held by kaidan occasionally. they get pretty tangled in bed.
42. what is their favourite feature of their partner?
lana x ortega— lana likes his quiet, his static, the fact that she doesn’t know what he’s thinking. it might make her paranoid, but some part of her also likes it too. ortega has always liked her eyes, eyes that see too much and feel too much and betray her more than she probably thinks.
noa x kaidan— noa would’ve said she liked his body the most, the hard panes and edges, but really she’s mostly partial to his hair. especially once the greys start coming in. also the beard when he lets himself grow it. kaidan has always liked her hands, so sure and calloused and warm against his skin. he also liked how bright her eyes are.
43. what is the first thing that changes when they realize they have feelings for the other?
lana x ortega— the paranoia and anxiety for lana shifts from somewhat manageable to full-blown insane almost. he makes her go against everything, makes her feel when she shouldn’t, and it’s really just confusing and overwhelming a lot of the time. ortega gets a sort of understanding glint to his eyes, starts noticing more about her and worrying that something is very deeply wrong. he also takes as much of her time as he can, always wants to sit and talk or just be in her presence more than usual.
noa x kaidan— she becomes a bit more focused on winning him back, on making him realise that this is something she’s feeling and it’s real and she’s sorry for being careless before. she becomes a bit more gentle (as gentle as noa can get), a bit more understanding and a bit less callous about the whole thing; she becomes serious, which is the biggest change. kaidan had feelings fairly early on, and always found himself asking to talk to her, always wanted her opinion and support on things. it’s not that he can’t do things on his own, but he enjoys her insight and private company, and took as much of it as he could.
44. what are their nicknames for each other?
lana x ortega— he used to call her “sidestep” or “step” a lot, but quickly drops that when she comes back. he tested the waters with “chang” a bit too, but mostly sticks with lana these days. lana sticks with “ortega”, very rarely calling him ricardo.
noa x kaidan— they use each others last names a fair bit, from habit and preference. noa calls him “k” every so often, and kaidan comes to like it when it comes from her.
45. who worries the most? over what?
lana x ortega— ortega, about literally everything to do with lana after she comes back. is she eating, is she in trouble, what’s going on, why the paranoia, something’s not right, where did those bruises come from? lana worries too, but mostly about herself and how she’s concocted this shit storm that’s bound to burst at any given moment. she worries about how he’ll look at her, once he knows. worries that it will break her even more.
noa x kaidan— they’re both fairly confident in each other’s abilities in the field, although they always have an eye on each other when shits starts to get a bit hairy. kaidan worries more off field, especially as the war comes to a head, because he sees how noa isn’t sleeping as much and how she sits staring at reports with a blank expression late at night. the worry intensifies post war, but they help each other through.
46. who initiates kisses?
lana x ortega— ortega is always more bold in moving in, but will always take it slow and wait for her approval before actually kissing her. he knows how the touch is still a problem for her, knows how she is with intimacy, and always checks she’s ok with it first. but it’s always ortega.
noa x kaidan— it varies, they’re both big fans of kissing and also aren’t really worried about doing it in public or anything. kaidan probably initiates a bit more though.
47. who says i love you first? how did it happen?
lana x ortega— i can’t remember exactly how it happens in canon, but i stand by canon on this. i remember it hurts, and it’s a weight off but another burden put in it’s place, and kind of dooms them both all over again.
noa x kaidan— kaidan told her in me1, and noa didn’t really reciprocate until me3 when he’s in the hospital half dead and the world’s falling apart around them and she’s been a fool for so many years. kaidan knew, i think, knew she loved him but knew that was hard to admit. things are rough for a little, but they mend it together.

Note
for the angsty relationship ask meme: 1, 2,14, and 40 for noa shepard or ida greene? (or another character that strikes your fancy!)
both? both is good!
1. do they have a lot of arguments? if so, over what?
noa/kaidan - they butt heads every now and then, moreso after the war when noa’s struggling a lot mentally with her rehab and the notion of not Fighting something at any given moment and feels like kaidan’s babying her. kaidan keeps a cool head for the both of them though, or at least tries to, since noa’s temper is pretty terrible.
ida/mason - they less argue and more bicker and tease each other, and usually about really trivial things. her car is the center of a lot of mason’s jibes, and she likes teasing him about the whole vampire thing which usually ends with him baring his fangs at her and ida getting … really turned on lol.
2. who apologizes first? in what way? is it hard for either of them to apologize?
noa/kaidan - it used to always be kaidan, but noa got better about it over the years. she knows she can be a pain sometimes, and she appreciates kaidan so much for sticking with her. she owes him that much, even if apologising was never something she was very good at.
ida/mason - ida usually apologises first, because even if she’s not usually sincere about most things she is about that and she wants him to know it. if something serious happened though (a bad fight, for example), mason would feel bad enough about it that he’d mutter an apology to her. it always takes some convincing, though.
14.who grieves more when the other is away?
noa/kaidan - kaidan, as independent as he is and as mature as he is, missed her terribly. after everything, he likes being with her and knowing she’s okay. he might be a bit of a mother hen post-war, but it eases the anxiety pulsing in his stomach, and even if it frustrates noa she’s thankful for his almost-constant presence too.
ida/mason - they both miss each other something terrible, but mason is worse about it. if he could have it his way he’d be with her all the time, especially once his feelings really start kicking in. the separation anxiety/frustration is real.
40. who sleeps on the couch? can either of them sleep without the other?
noa/kaidan - kaidan, although he usually ends up back in the bed by the morning. after the whole cerberus thing, and their confrontation on horizon, neither of them have the energy to be mad at the other for very long. after the war, noa also relies a lot on his presence to get a good night’s sleep, to know she’s not alone with the expanse of her thoughts.
ida/mason - mason would reluctantly leave her room if she really wanted him to, but he’d less sleep on the couch and more just laze around her living room brooding until morning. maybe take a walk. clear his head. ida always feels bad about it, but sometimes he frustrates her so much and she needs some space. things are always good again by the morning, though.
