Todays rip: 21/12/2023
Lifelike Waterway
Season 4 Episode 1 Featured on: FIRST STRIKE ~ SiIvaGunner: King for Another Day Tournament Original Soundtrack VOL. 1
Ripped by l4ureleye
youtube
Every since the year the King for Another Day tournament came to a close, the Christmas season has always brought back memories of it. It was such a huge event, and only really happened to land around the Christmas season due to delays in production, yet it all felt so befitting - the kind of comforting, communal feel of the holidays just fit a tournament of this ilk so well. And while yesterday, with 11 Minutes of City Pop, I wrote about the tournament's beloved silver medalist, today we're going lower down in the ranks - to a combatant many thought went out before he could've shown his true potential.
To say that Cave Story means a lot to me would be an understatement - I alluded to it earlier this month with Whip Fortress, but its a game whose aesthetics and music have stuck with me and thousands of people all over the world for so many years. We all knew Quote would have bangers in the tournament, yet by the time he was up to bat, he'd barely had any arrangements up on the channel to truly show his stuff. That's not to mention the fact that his source list even included other early-2000s indie games, yet...before that could be taken advantage of, the voting was settled and he was out for the count. When his catalogue of arrangements started to finally be rolled out, there was an era of...sorrow, in their comment sections. And Lifelike Waterway was no exception to that - to me back then, it was the moment that it truly sunk in that Quote was down and out.
The dour circumstances of the rip were not something that the team could've ever planned around - the arrangements were obviously made far in advance before the voting actually happened. Yet as also happened with Geno and DEARLY BELOVED..., his loss added a magical form of ambience to the music, a secret spice to turn a chill arrangement into a full-on tribute in his memory. I've talked at length about l4ureleye's ripping prowess on the blog before with rips like Hopes and Divinity+ and SICKO TALE - she has an unparalleled ability to create entire worlds and galaxies in your mind, out of nothing but her sound. From the mashups to the remixes, she's uncontested in the art of lo-fi, music that sounds relaxing yet simultaneously gives off the feeling of venturing into an endlessly-deep cavern. With KFAD, she was able to flex her powers to absurd levels, and if you've been listening along you may already know what I mean.
The original Lifelike Waterway already marked one of the most intense emotional points of Cave Story, yet Lifelike Waterway is able to spin that melody, that soothing yet haunting tune into something else entirely. Its far from a faithful arrangement, yet the new atmosphere it creates is just so...gripping. Its hard to put into words the emotions it makes me feel, yet its palpably a blend of the feelings I still have from Cave Story, and the feelings from Quote's fallout in the tournament - yet, the arrangement doesn't fill me with sadness, either. Its more like...the feeling of taking long, deep breaths. The feeling that everything's going to be okay.
...Look, it's difficult to find many specifics to comment on with an arrangement that's as thorough and all-encompassing as this. All of this is really just to say, that Quote's part played in the tournament really highlighted just how emotionally attached many of us have become to this silly little music project, how SiIvaGunner has brought new emotional meaning to characters they didn't even create - and, most of all, that l4ureleye is a genius.

As much as I love cave story on switch I feel like they really messed up on the "visual enhancements" for the game. The updated pixel art was already perfectly fine I liked it a lot on Wii but the lighting and water physics on switch just look weird and out of place don't even get me started on the textureless exteriors of the levels

Touch Detective 3 + The Complete Case Files launches March 28, 2024 in the west
Gematsu Source

Touch Detective 3 + The Complete Case Files will launch for Switch on March 28, 2024 in the west, publisher Nicalis announced. It will be priced at $39.99 for the digital edition, $49.99 for the standard physical edition, and $59.99 for the special physical edition. Pre-orders are available now at Nicalis.

Here is an overview of the collection, via Nicalis:
A collection of charming and eccentric adventure games that originated on the Nintendo DS platform, the Touch Detective series follows the adventures of Mackenzie, a rookie detective who attempts to solve local mysteries with the help of Funghi (her mushroom assistant). Touch Detective 3 + The Complete Case Files includes all three mainline Touch Detective games, marking the first time that Touch Detective 3 will be localized and officially released in English. Nicalis also worked closely with Success and Beeworks (the game’s Japanese publisher and developer) to update the localizations of Touch Detective and Touch Detective 2½, restoring some small details from the original Japanese text that were lost when the games were originally released in English-speaking territories on Nintendo DS. In some cases, these changes actually introduce subtle clues that are intended to aid in Mackenzie’s investigations. Also, since the original releases used a second screen to display Mackenzie’s thoughts, these brief asides now appear as interludes superimposed over the main gameplay. This makes it easier to follow the story and ensures that players won’t miss any of her often humorous inner monologue.

Was Jet Set Knights really a "lost" PS Vita game?
There’s a huge buzz amongst the PS Vita community right now surrounding the impending release of Jet Set Knights. Not only is this the first commercial game release for the console since 2021, but what is now almost certainly the final physical game release for the console on an official Sony produced cartridge. But amongst all the excitement, there are questions surrounding the release… A…

Game Thoughts: Cave Story's Secret Santa by Nicalis
Tumblr media
This one has a bit of a history with us… Well, particularly me.
We got this around Christmas time last year, and I started to make gameplay videos of it. This was before we started streaming, so there was no audio commentary, and they were pretty short compared to our streams nowadays.
ANYWAY, I didn’t finish the playthrough since we got busy.
But we’re not busy now, or rather, we’re streaming now, so might as well play it, right? - Kochan
What’s It All About?
In this game set in the Cave Story universe, you play as Santa (the Mimiga) who needs to put back all the Mimigas’ stolen presents to their rightful places. And that means sneaking into their homes through the chimney, avoiding detection, and finding their Christmas trees, then going all the way back to the starting point.
And maybe eating their cookies as well.
World
To be honest, none of us are truly familiar with the world of Cave Story. We vaguely know about the game’s existence, and the Mimigas, but that’s it.
But yeah, apparently, their houses are spread all over three different maps, and apparently their houses are dangerous…
Art
As you would expect from something from the original Cave Story, the art is a cute pixel style. As far as I know, the Mimigas look pretty much the same as the OG game.
I don’t really have much to comment about it, to be honest. It’s nice, and all the different objects are easily distinguishable.
Music
Since it’s a short game, there are only a few tracks used in it, and one of them is a chiptune Carol of the Bells. They’re nice, but the volume can’t be changed in-game, and the default volume is loud, so you would have to adjust it from the computer’s volume mixer.
It does get you into the gameplay, though.
Gameplay
As described earlier, you need to help Santa navigate through various houses/levels and find their Christmas trees, where he will put back the missing presents. But it’s not as easy as it sounds, as he doesn’t like being seen by people, so aside from any environmental hazards, you would also need to avoid detection.
Thankfully, you can see where they are looking, and you can use certain objects to help you get through the levels, including gift boxes, blocks, and treasure chests with items. There’s also no scoring of any sort, just the time that you took clearing the level.
There’s also the optional goal of eating cookies that (I think) were put out just for you, which serves as an additional challenge.
I just find it a little inconvenient that they don’t explain some mechanics, like the gift boxes, which apparently let you stay in a spot where you would otherwise be detected, and will not be destroyed when you pick up items such as cookies or prybars. Also, there were times when I thought I would be detected, but it’s apparently out of the enemy’s hitbox.
Then again, you could always experiment with unfamiliar elements and retry if you get caught. How long you play the game is partly based on a mix of skill and timing, and partly depending on your patience.
Overall
Pros
It’s a short game (for some)
Not too hard as to make people too frustrated, and there’s no permanent game over. Trying again is encouraged.
It’s a free game
This might be a good game for speedrunners, since it keeps track of time for every level.
Cons
It’s a short game (for some)
There are some hitboxes that you might find “weird” (Otherwise, it’s okay level design.)
Some mechanics aren’t explained/don’t have a “tutorial”
But then again, with the repeatable nature of the game, you can experiment with those environmental elements freely.
It was available on certain sites last year (it was supposedly limited-time), but it’s now unavailable on Epic Games and GOG. Apparently, it’s still available on Steam for some reason.
