[HURLS A VERY SMALL BILLY/CHRISSY THING AT YOUR HEADS]
note: this is likely fairly early on in their relationship before Chrissy gets a truly full picture of Billy. Also I write Chrissy as very on the meek and fearful end (at least in her own mind and in this context) which plays into her perceptions. Basically a wee little blurb to get the idea out of my head and take stab at a voice for Chrissy.
(this is a repost from my blog hardestgrove which has been sent to hell by tumblr glitches twice.)
Tumblr media
The cruel comment is barely out of her mother’s mouth and something about Billy shifts. Something that makes Chrissy worried.
“Oh I don’t know about that Mrs. Cunningham. I knew a lot of pretty girls back in California, real model material, and I’d say Chrissy as them all beat easy.”
He’s smiling the same charming polite smile as before but there’s something mean about it now. Everything about him feels meaner, more dangerous. even the hand on her back scares her a little now. But there’s also a thrill running through her— a mix of horror and vicious glee.
Her mother respects Billy more than she does Chrissy, he’s handsome, smart, a star player and from a much more impressive place than Indiana. Plus he’s a boy. To her mother he’s obviously going places and unlike Chrissy. Her mother doesn’t know his reputation reputation like Chrissy does, even if Chrissy’s larger come to see past it by now at the real Billy. And Billy’s looking her dead in the eye and contradicting her on that thought, that Chrissy is ugly and thus not worth anything.
Chrissy knows about his temper, how he gets into fights and things. It scared her a little —a lot— at first, she’s so weak and he’s so strong. She always thought about how it could get used against her. Thought that maybe she should’ve just accepted Jason’s attempts and not let Billy sweep her off her feet, how that would’ve probably have been safer. It never occurred to her that he might defend her. No one ever defended her. She was still scared —Chrissy was always scared, of everything— but maybe she also felt a little better?
As her mother floundered to recover and save face in front the nice young man she was hoping would put up with Chrissy, Chrissy herself felt a little more safe. The wound the remark had made soothed just a bit. Chrissy couldn’t stand up for herself, but her boyfriend was mean and scary and he could take on anyone and anything. And he’d do it for her.
