Crate Digger’s Corner: 2 More Great Shows In The Twin Cities
Tumblr media
Crate Digger’s Corner…by DJ Musically Rich
(If you’d like to listen to a track from the bands as you read, go to the end of the post to start the song)
10/10/2019- Minneapolis, MN…First Avenue Mainroom
It was a tense night in Minneapolis on this Thursday night as I made my way through protesters, police and people who had attended the Trump campaign rally. That rally took place at Target Center located on the corner of 1st Ave. and 7th St. Right across the street is a small (about 1,200 capacity) nightclub known as First Avenue, and on this particular night SF area band Oh Sees were preparing to take the stage. A few minutes after I entered the band was still sound checking behind the dropped curtain, and as they were getting things close they dropped into Pink Floyd’s ‘Interstellar Overdrive’ (or at least a groove that sounded close to it). Playing half of their songs off of 2 of their 3 heaviest albums (the recently released “Face Stabber” and “Orc”) the Mainroom’s crowd was ready to have a good time and the Oh Sees delivered. After starting off a little sloppy with their first couple songs which were at a very fast tempo, they settled in and rode a wave of music for about 90-105 minutes. The music ranged from aggressively punky to psychedelic rock explosions throughout the concert.  The double drumming was incredible as the two drummers stayed in perfect time at any speed the music called for. The founder John Dwyer was dynamic in both his vocals and especially his guitar playing which varied from quick bursts of riffs, to some great solos as well as taking the improvisation further and further out (which I’ll get to in a minute). The other notable thing about the sound is I felt the keyboardist could have been turned up in the mix. Besides for comping and soloing (which he did seem to get turned up some as he soloed), he also seemed to control most of the sound effects and at times those could have definitely been louder in the mix. As the band continued to play, the crowd continued to amp up their intensity which continued to the end of the concert. When the band hit the final song of the night they went into a nearly 20 minute version of ‘Encrypted Bounce’ from the album “Drop”. That is where Dwyer got to show off all of his virtuosic skill on the guitar, and he also brought out a surprise (at least for me), for about 2-3 minutes of the improvisation during the song, he played an EWI (electronic wind instrument) made popular largely through deceased jazz sax player, Michael Brecker. It was a fantastic ending to a very good show and I look forward to them coming through town again.
RIYL: King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard, Ty Segall, Six Organs Of Admittance, The Exploding Eyes
Albums to start with by the band…A Weird Exits, Smote Reverser, Mutilator Defeated At Last, Face Stabber

10/15/2019- St. Paul, MN…Turf Club
On this night I’m making my way to the Turf Club with two friends to see the sold out show by Tank And The Bangas. The New Orleans band brought everything they had to this set and it showed. This was essentially my first time hearing them (my friends showed me their NPR Tiny Desk Concert before we left) and was stunned by the breadth of what they brought musically, especially to the very little I had seen, before we came to the show. Their live show certainly includes the spoken word element that will at times start songs, if not last almost all the way through. You also hear the strong Erykah Badu influence in the music and even in the lead singer’s voice, but there is still so much more. First, the band was a 9 piece on the small stage of the club. It included the lead singer, 2 back-up singers, guitarist, bassist, drummer, keyboardist and two sax players (one of whom also played flute and clarinet). Despite the size, the band was extremely tight and versatile. Besides the type of R&B mentioned above, the band also showed clear influences in their playing and songs to Prince, early Funkadelic, and multi-metered jazz fusion that I felt probably came through either Chick Corea’s Return To Forever or Stanley Clarke’s solo work (he was the bassist for RTF as well). A few very minor things, knowing what the band is fully capable of, I would have liked to have maybe seen fewer ballads. Also, the lead singer who was able to, basically, shape-shift her voice into whatever tone she wanted from full-throated gospel type singing to sounding like a young girl singing a song in a somewhat nasal manner. She was also a very good rapper and was able to blend with the backup singers or cut through all the other instruments to come to the forefront.  Another band that I’m seeing (and in this case hearing) for the first time and that I hope makes their way North on the Mississippi River again soon!
RIYL: Erykah Badu, Jill Scott, Prince, Janelle Monae
**I picked up their album, “Live Vibes: Tour Edition”. It’s very good, but sticks mostly to the R&B, poppier side of their live show.
