Newt/Hermann Fic and Art Secret Santa-Winter Exchange 2023 ❄️👨‍🔬❤️👨‍🔬❄️

Hi all!! Here is the info and sign-up form for for the Newt/Hermann 2023 Secret Santa/Winter Exchange.

To join the exchange, sign up using this form by Monday, 11/27/23.

How does it work? If you sign up for the exchange by November 27th, I'll randomly and anonymously match up all participants and assign you a giftee by Saturday, December 2nd. It'll then be your responsibility to create some form of Newt/Hermann content (fic, art, etc.) for your giftee by January 31st, 2024, and in return, someone will make some form of Newt/Hermann content for you!

Note that this is a little different than previous years, where gifts were 'due' by early January. I'm hoping that extending the deadline beyond the busy holiday/school finals season will allow more people to participant if they would like! (You're of course welcome to finish up your gift by New Year's as usual if you would prefer that.)

There are some more specific details about signing up in the form, as well as a spot to share your ‘wishlist’ (i.e., tropes or scenarios you just can’t live without that might be helpful if your giftee needs some inspiration!), and another spot to indicate interest in being a pinch hitter.

2023 newt/hermann exchange (interest check + brief poll)

hi Newt/Hermann nation!! it's November at last, so as per the annual tradition i'm gearing up to run the newmann secret santa/winter gift exchange once again! I got an ask about it earlier this fall and it seems like there's enough interest that I can go ahead and start sign-ups soon. (as a reminder on what the gift exchanges are, here's the info post from last year--stay tuned for another one this year, lol)

i DID want to run a brief poll to get opinions on the length of the exchange. more on this below the cut!

in the previous years i've run the secret santa exchange I typically have the matches ready and out by late november/early december, with the 'due date' being around new year's in january (barring extensions, last minute pinch hitters, and belated gifts of course!). in a newmann discord chat recently I had a few people suggest expanding the loose deadline to be around valentine's day in feburary instead so it can be a nice long winter holidays exchange. this would give people at least two months to work on gifts rather than just December! and this way the deadline won't be in the middle of in a very busy season (ie, holidays, parties, family obligations, final exams if you're in school, and so on). of course you would still be welcome to gift by new year's if you would like :)

i'll keep the poll up for a week but will most likely open exchange sign-ups earlier than that if one option is winning by a landslide. full disclosure, I'm leaning towards the extended deadline, but I wanted to make sure other people don't have large newmann/pacrim fandom events planned for jan/feb that I would be overlapping with!

whether you vote or not, I would also greatly appreciate if you could drop a reply or a like on this post if you are planning on signing up so I can get a rough idea of how many people might be participating this year! it helps me budget time for doing the matches/contacting everyone

Below is my Newt Geiszler / Hermann Gottlieb fanfic round-up for 2023. It summarizes all my Newmann fics published in 2023 as well as a preview of what’s to come in 2024!

2023 total published word count: 31,479

Chasing the Rabbit: 5,373 words, rated T At a crossroads regarding his own encrypted personnel file, Hermann must decide whether or not to confirm his long-held suspicions about an event in his past. A story of old wounds, new beginnings, drift compatibility and a shared history with Newton that goes deeper than either of them could have imagined.

Shutterbug: 10,872 words, rated E Post Operation Pitfall and part way through the Black Velvet Rabbits’ world tour, Newt and Hermann find themselves once again in Berlin where Newt jumps at the chance to fulfill a fantasy or two Hermann didn’t know he had. A sexy, standalone sequel to ‘Compositions’ involving a pair of black rabbit ears and a camera.

Something Borrowed: 13,172 words, rated T Newt and Hermann are asked to be in the bridal party for Tendo and Alison’s upcoming wedding alongside Mako and Raleigh. Between planning the stag do, setting up the wedding photoshoot and writing a best man speech, who’s got time to finally admit to your long-time lab partner how you really feel about them? A wedding-centric Newmann getting together story (side pairings: Tendo / Alison; Mako / Raleigh).

Strikethrough: 2,062 words, rated T When Hermann seeks his feedback on a print interview about their joint contribution to Operation Pitfall, Newt jumps at the chance to get the love confession from his labmate he’s been waiting on for years by writing it himself. A mixed media tale of an eager xenobiologist, a flustered mathematician and the very, very liberal AWESOME interview edits that finally take their relationship to the next level.

All of the below are works in progress and the word count will increase (especially the two AUs). My new year’s resolution for 2024 is to post the two one-shot WIPs and start releasing chapters for both longer AU fics, plus anything else that pops up!

Hermann Gottlieb Consulting Detective: currently 62,000~ words, rated M Victorian-era AU, Sherlock Holmes pastiche: When Hermann Gottlieb, the world’s only consulting detective, receives a letter from American doctor Newton Geiszler, their correspondence sparks the joint investigation of a series of happenings that take them into the fog shrouded world of the capital’s criminal underbelly. A Pacific Rim adventure mystery set in the gas-lit streets of Sherlock Holmes’ Victorian London.

Nameless: currently 8,000~ words, rated M Historical + mythical creature / selkie AU: After a personal tragedy and irreparable fall-out with his family, Hermann Gottlieb leaves the comforts of his life in London to exile himself to a tiny town on the coast of Scotland. When he encounters a mysterious, green-eyed stranger without a name, he is soon drawn into a world of magic and legend where an underwater war for the fate of humanity is being waged between the selkie folk and beasts known only as the 'Deep Ones.'
