Yesterday night i watched this video essay about SA2's plot (specifically Shadow's role in it) and it was so good that i got. Genuinely upset about how the Adventure era became such a joke in the 2010s. Like, upset enough to spew paragraphs about it to a friend.
How were we, as a people, convinced that SA1 and SA2 were a mistake? How did we decide that multiple playstyles, complex themes, spoken dialogue and even 3D GAMEPLAY were the issues? How did we believe it so hard that even Sonic Team seemed to believe it?
I'm so sad that it went on for years. I'm so sad that we're still feeling its effects—from humans and G.U.N. being in off-screen limbo, to people looking at this Dragon Ball Mickey Mouse shit and only seeing the Mickey Mouse. (It's both!! It was meant to be both from the start!! It's when one overtakes the other that it stops feeling like Sonic!!)
Anyway I guess Sega heard my ramblings last night cus boom. "Shadow is cool and looking to him for inspiration is cool too. Also it's his year and we made his motorcycle real."
And the response?? On here and Twitter, people are talking about how they relate to Shadow and the kid in the video!! Yeah, there's still other people making fun of it, or are just confused by it... but they're being drowned out by the sincere stuff. That's so fucking wonderful.
Shadow enthusiasts: enjoy your year. You've more than earned it.
TL;DR: this shit dropped just in time to stop my supervillain arc 💙

im still laughing at the notes on that shadow lore post but now im also thinking about like... the gap between what "normal" people think sonic games are about, and what theyre actually about. its a pretty big gap and that post is a reminder of that.
what caused that? im genuinely curious. what lines of communication does the series lack in marketing or whatever that other games dont? was the gap always there, or did it begin after certain games? what can be done to close it?
cus i dunno, i just... wish it was easier for people to Get It. to get why some people are so passionate about these characters and their world and also being anti-military.
it felt like a miracle that enough people who know and care about the Lore gathered to make the Sonic Movies. with the direction theyre heading, they might help to shorten the gap. in the meantime, i just wanna know how to make that miracle the rule and not the exception.

one of those Personalized Mario 64 video things, but with Sonic 06. shaky beta footage uploaded from an old Nokia or Blackberry. tests of the day-night cycle and the Rainbow Gem failing in ominous ways, hinting at why they were cut. Lava in Soleanna’s canals, citizens t-posing in Crisis City, Eyes of Solaris spawning in the sky. NPC dialogue suggesting they can feel something’s wrong, that they know their world isn’t finished and never will be.
no jumpscares, no “apparitions.” just a sense of futility; the dread of knowing you can’t fix your mistakes in time, and that the price you’ll pay is eternity.

when people post cute or creative or just straight-up great Sonic fanart and tag it with "sorry for the cringe lol" i get. so sad. like you made something cool and utterly harmless! you dont have to apologize, even as a joke! the social ""rules"" that compel you to do so can and have wrecked people's self-esteem, and for what? who benefits from that?
the concept of cringe doesn't help anybody. it only holds people back. but the more people ignore it, the less power it holds on everyone.
so go on! post your Sonic fanart, and don't apologize for it! you'll be cringe, but you'll be free!

Sonic 06 was made for the series' 15th anniversary, and is now itself 15 years old. It's now the halfway point of Sonic's entire history, and honestly that fact's fucking me up.
Sonic Team has now spent half of its whole existence trying to make up for 06. That in itself isn't necessarily a bad thing, and for a time it wasn't. But somewhere along the way, the way they went about it shifted. It went from being bigger, better, truer to itself... to shrinking back and playing it painfully, detrimentally safe. And it's been so long that the things I love most about this series have been considered jokes longer than they were ever done sincerely.
I'm excited to see what Rangers/Frontiers has in store, and in the end this is all a #FirstWorldProblem. But it's hitting me now how long it's been since what I love about Sonic has been exiled from its identity, and it just... hurts.

been thinking about the way Shadow’s been handled as a character lately.
yes, i know about the Big Issue. i havent talked much about it because 1. i dont have the spoons to dig through dozens of justifiably upset comments to fact-check the specifics, and 2. for whatever reason ive just never been as passionately focused on him as other fans are. but its there, and it hurts, and its hard to make sense of.
sometimes i like to try.
i remember someone involved in IDW saying Sega said it was to preserve the “longevity of the brand”. judging by that (and assuming my subconscious didnt make it up, sorry still no spoons), maybe this is another case of them reaching too far to address the criticisms from the late 00s and early 10s. you know, the cases that ended with the series losing a bit of its identity where it really didnt need to.
im still excited to see whats on the horizon, dont get me wrong. its been a long while since these changes were made -- long enough that some new changes, in staff and in focus, seem to be in store. but... sometimes i think about whats happened, and a hopelessness sets in.
sometimes i think about whats been done to this world we love, for the sake of “longevity”, and think... what good is a world that lasts forever?

god im so glad sonic mania’s getting good scores so far
i’ve been worried about it all week tbh... i always get really apprehensive just before a new sonic game comes out even if i’m excited for it
cus for years now big-name gaming mags and websites have been giving them lower scores for petty reasons that they'd be discredited for if they said it about any other game.. instead of complaining about whether there’s glitches or missing content (stuff reviewers are supposed to complain about), they complain about what genre of game it is or how many side characters are in it (subjective things that should not influence a professional review).
(actually that second thing is a problem with game reviews in general)
and i’m sorry for not letting this go but im still upset about this... cus in the face of a game that’s been made by huge fans of the Classic games and looks like everything they’ve been asking for, they didn’t even discuss it. they mentioned it for three sentences, then insinuated that the entire series (even the Classic games) were never good in the first place. excuse me, insinuated isn’t the right word - they stated this as if it was fact. i’d let this slide as another case of them mixing up preference and quality again... if their reviews didn’t contradict with this sentiment.
but who cares? it’s sonic. if someone popular says it’s bad, nobody questions it or asks actual fans what they think.
im sure they’ll try it again with forces but for now i’m glad they had the decency not to do it with mania.
