Eind 19e eeuw maakte de middenstand wereldwijd een enorme ontwikkeling door. Winkels werden groter en chiquer en in steden als Moskou, Milaan, Londen, Brussel en Parijs ontstonden deftige winkelpassages. De rijken van Nederland, vooral woonachtig in Den Haag en amsterdam, kwamen tijdens reizen in aanraking met deze winkels. Dienstboden brachten bestellingen naar Brussel en Parijs en kochten daar zaken als parfums kwamen zo naar Nederland. Het was echter Rotterdam waar de eerste passage van Nederland werd geopend! Deze is echter volledig verwoest tijdens het bombardement van mei 1940. In 1885 werd in Den Haag de tweede passage geopend, een winkelstraat naar het voorbeeld van Parijs. Het werd o.a. ontworpen door J.C. van Wijk, die ook het Haagse Kurhaus en de Rotterdamse passage had ontworpen. Het werd ontworpen in de stijl van de neorenaissance. Voor de exploitatie werd een speciale maatschappij opgericht. In de ochtenden waren het dienstboden en dienstmeisjes die in de passage bestellingen kwamen halen. In de middag waren het deftige dames van Den Haag die er rondstruinden. —————- At the end of the 19th century shopping became a new phenomenon for the wealthy. In cities like Moscow, Paris, Londen, Milan and Brussels decadent malls were build. The wealthy Dutch saw these during trips and in 1879 the first Dutch passage was opened in Rotterdam. This one was destroyed in 1940 during the German bombardment of the city. In 1885 the Passage of The Hague was opened. It was designed by J.C. van Wijk, who also designed the Passage in Rotterdam and the Kurhaus in The Hague. During mornings the staff of the wealthy in The Hague made their rounds around the shops. Vienna State Opera

Designed by August Sicard von Sicardburg and Eduard van der Nüll in 1861 and was completed on 1869. This neo renaissance was formely named Vienna Court Opera until it became known by its current name after the establishment of the First Austrian Republic in 1921. I first knew about this building from the movie Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation and I finally met this building in June of 2018. This is the shot that I took. 😊📸
