A-T-3 272 Sufferin'
UB40 have their biggest commercial success with their first number one single and album, Red Red Wine and Labour Of Love respectively. Loved by the wider public, Red Red Wine stayed in the U.K. singles chart for two years, it also went to number one in the US. Despite this it's here where music snobs say, ah I like their early stuff but... yeah, you heard Food For Thought for the first time last week! I remember Red Red Wine being played on the radio a lot. London based music journalists have written some stupid stuff about UB40 from this period whist at the same time praising actual white boy reggae made by post-punk bands (UB40, a multicultural group, there's tons of 'em it's not just Ali and Robin Campbell. Two-Tone artists like Terry Hall or Dave Wakeling didn't get the same treatment) and Jamaican pop or poppy lovers records
Labour Of Love period UB40, my three points are:
"After finding out that many of [Jamaica's] artists were being exploited by music producers, who would claim all the royalties and proceeds on the recordings, while the singers remained penniless." UB40 tracked down the vocalists and musicians that play on the original records they cover for the Labour Of Love series of albums and made sure they got paid, many for the first time since the session
B-sides. Their are some brilliant b-sides coming out at this time
The b-side of Please Don't Make Me Cry is used to showcase up-and-coming artists. The band fully realise this on the Baggariddim series of albums
