Kichiemon, a leading Taishö actor famous for his imperious scowl and proud glare, was well suited to the role of Mitsuhide in the historical play ""The Banner of Rebellion,"" about the tribulations of a royal retainer falsely accussed of treason.

By cropping the composition so that Mitsuhide seems ready to explode, Shunsen conveyed the psychic energy of the enraged warrior. Shunsen, using softly modulated colors in the naturalistic manner of the Maruyama-Shijö school of painting, adapted Western methods of life drawing rendered with light-colored lines that expressed the features of an actor's face more naturally.

Natori Shunsen 名取春仙 (1886 – 1960).

Natori Shunsen est considéré comme le dernier maître de l'art du kabuki 歌舞伎, yakusha-e 役者絵, littéralement « images d'acteurs ». Il est né dans la préfecture de Yamanashi mais sa famille s'installe à Tōkyō peu après sa naissance et il demeure dans la capitale jusqu'à sa mort en 1960. Les portraits d'acteurs de Shunsen ressortent principalement du genre ōkubi-e大首絵 (grande tête), format qui lui permet de se concentrer sur les expressions et les émotions du visage du sujet.

Thirty-six Kabuki Actors Portraits - Morita Kanya, by Natori Shunsen (1928)

From the series "Thirty-six Kabuki Actors Portraits" which contains Shunsen's most attractive Okubi-e portraits. They were lavishly made and sold by subscription only in 1925-1929. This print is the series installment no.28, Kabuki actor, Morita Kanya XIII is in the role of Genta Kagesue.
