hope my question doesn't sound so awful, i'm curious, when it comes to you and your ships like BruTim and etc., would you consider yourself a proshipper?
it's not! don't worry!
i consider myself very firmly anti-censorship which means that i am very firmly proship.
i know that there has been an attempt at changing the meaning of proshipping by people trying to cast it in a bad light because if you control the definition of something then you basically control all future arguments. (interestingly it's anti shipping that is the reason for pro ship's existence. livejournal was full of people telling others that their ships were gross and launching crusades against ships they hated calling themselves "anti-x-ship". pro, the opposite of anti, emerged to show as a symbol that you weren't an asshole. a lot of proshippers don't like or even approve of all ships but they believe you shouldn't get targeted and harassed for something as stupid as a ship essentially)
proshipping is something that i agree with not only for the anti-censorship aspects, it's also the finer details
1) your fictional interests are not a reflection of your irl beliefs
2) that harassment, doxing, and threats are not a logical or stable reactions to seeing something you don't like
3) fiction is not what influences reality it is interpretation of fiction that does (you were already a bad person if something you saw on tv or read in a book made you violent or do something depraved etc)
i've been lurking in fandom for a long time and i've noticed a trend with antis that have shaped a very low opinion of them because of the glaringly clear political agenda so many antis appear to have. there's been a rise in 'anti rhetoric' that pretty closely coincides with the rise in american alt-right movements and this is no different because it's people being radicalized by the exact same pipeline. anti's, right wing, q-anon people, etc say (oftentimes line for line) the EXACT same arguments.
arguments that tend to be anti women and anti lgbtq+
i realize indoctrination is hard to spot especially if you're young, vulnerable, or its being said by someone you look up to. but there are two things to keep in mind when you think about all the claims and stances antis make.
is the claim outlandish or incredibly bold? such as saying that people who like lolicon or make nsfw art of underaged characters are pedophiles. that is a VERY serious accusation and people online say it like its nothing. when you understand the full depravity of a crime like pedophilia there is ABSOLUTELY no way you could ever equate drawings of a fictional character to a living breathing child.
who benefits from you believing those claims?
-you ever wonder why ao3 writers who are majority queer women in their mid 20s tend to be baselessly accused of pedophilia? even though the profile of a pedophile in the USA is of a middle-aged white man in their 30s-40s? if we wanted to characterize fandoms by most likely to have pedophiles i'd be eyeing the nascar and sports fandoms given their fan basis fit the profile better.
did you know referring to queer people as pedophiles is a very age old tactic of eliminating public support or sympathy for them. look up 'boys beware' a 1955 PSA directed at boys to help protect them from the "sick" "pedophiles" known as the homosexuals.
-you ever wonder why antis claim to be "for the children" and yet use terms like 'cp' when referring to real children?
did you know RAINN has stated the proper term to use is CSAM-child sexual abuse materials. because 'child' and 'porn' cannot be used in the same sentence? fundamentally "(often) pornography online depicts adults who have consented to be filmed, that’s never the case when the images depict children". you'd think someone who cares so much for real children would get that.
-you ever wonder why so many antis rally for censorship on ao3 and cite the overnight mass deletion and censorship of fanworks from livejournal as proof of something that occurred because there was too much "cp" on the cite?
did you know it was it the 'warriors for innocence' who were behind not just livejournal but issues with other fansites and who directly stated their goal was to "hunt down people who support homosexuality, pedophilia and incest" and who have very clear ties to dominionism, and "Christian Patriot" militias?
do you notice how that's exactly what antis today say about "proshitters" just without the 'homosexuality' part because that part is being whispered since they know being homophobic within fandoms who are en mass queer would lose them a lot of support?
the anti and proship structure is a very american creation because it was born on forums mainly populated by americans and its only recently that this has started affecting overseas fandoms. recently on twitter a LOT of japanese artists have started referring to themselves as proshippers and blocking anyone who has 'antiship' in their description box because proship is the default for basically everywhere else that doesn't have american theocratic conservative powerplays.
maybe being an anti started as being an asshole but that's no longer the case. it's no longer just about "i hate this ship" its becomes "i hate this ship because ive fallen into an alt-right pipeline to appeal to the young future conservative and so fiction is real and you, a dirty fucking queer, are a pedophile, rapist, molester!!!!'
all you have to do to see a grown up politically involved "anti" is to turn on an american news station and watch the debate about banning library books that contain "explicit material" like things related to critical race theory or homosexuality. because that's what an anti evolves into. that's what all indoctrinated conservatives evolve into.
so the anti objectives and alignments have very firmly changed to something i will never respect or side with.
i think that an old article about WFI can summerize what i think is happening with modern antishipping and a changing political climate:
and if by chance an anti has somehow read this far: u were lied to girl. they knew you were a sucker and desperate for online connection or to be part of the "young activist" wave. but you were easy to trick and they filled your head with lies to help them push the christian conservative agenda that women dont deserve autonomy and gay people are depraved freaks who should all die.

I watched the first episodes of both the new racing anime, MF Ghost and Overtake! Here are my thoughts.
A little bit about me: I do like cars. I'm a big fan of Top Gear and have been since I was a teenager. I married a car mechanic who is building his own racecar (a 90s Lexus that he is going to put a 2JZ engine into). We watch NASCAR and F1 from time to time. He plays Gran Turismo and Forza. We have watched stages 1 and 2 of Initial D together. I wouldn't say I'm an expert car knower like he is, but I'm somewhat of a car knower.
MF Ghost (which I am just going to jokingly call Motherfucking Ghost until they spell it out) is from the same artist as Initial D, so it has that same uhh distinctive art style. Very square jaws, everyone is drawn as if they have on lipstick, etc. It's not my favorite art style. The CGI on the cars looks incredible - Initial D truly looks like the Money for Nothing music video by comparison lol.
My husband and I are both no fans of electric cars, and he's sometimes worried that gas engines will indeed someday stop being manufactured entirely as they are in the "15 minutes in the future" world of MF Ghost. A character also implies that all other forms of auto racing have shuttered or been banned ("he would have been in Le Mans back in the day"), making MF Ghost almost a dystopia!
Kanata is interesting - coming back to Japan to look for his father, and something has happened to his mother too (what could that be?), after going to a racing school (what kind? Is it just an MFG school? Or do they still do other kinds of auto racing?), he hops into a beautifully rendered Toyota 86 (the famed Hachiroku - we named our cat Hachi after this car) to get into MFG.
We do not see much racing at all in this first episode, and it ends RIGHT as the Eurobeat starts - which seemed like the ultimate "Awww man! Seriously?!" moment to me - but we do get to know Kanata and...Ren. Oh, Ren, honey, I can already tell that men are failing you. She's a high school student who works as a race queen in the SKIMPIEST outfit I've ever seen on a race queen (it is literally just a sports bra and white panties. It ain't no dang way those are pants of any kind) and two grown ass men are seen lusting after her. Because she doesn't want to disclose any information about herself, they don't know her age but we do, thus making the extensive male gaze she gets all the more stomach-twisting. Just once I would love for her to tell that Aiba guy "Oh, by the way? I'm in high school." He would shit his britches.
Of course, Initial D also dealt with a teenage girl, a whole child, having an enjo kosai relationship with a grown ass man. So grown ass men messing with girls when they should know better seems to just be a Thing that Shuichi Shigeno likes to put in his stories. Doesn't mean I have to like it. As a woman, I just want to protect Ren and help her!
Overall though, it's an interesting premise with a lot of questions.
To me Overtake has more passion and heart though. It's set in just the normal world, where F4 and Super GT racing both still exist lol, and mainly concerns a photographer (who very much reminded me of Kaji from Evangelion) who has been traumatized and cannot photograph people's faces as a result. He is assigned to take pictures of the Super GT cars and gets distracted by the F4, their opening act. Since he's an audience stand-in character, he gets a helpful education in the finer points of racing, making this much easier for car not-knowers to pick up. The characters are fun and charming, I don't see any obvious evidence of girls being manipulated by the male gaze (there are race queens but they're wearing proper outfits with tops and bottoms), there's a Godfather reference and LOTS of racing right from the jump. Seeing Koya suddenly get that light in his eyes as soon as he went into the paddock, I understood that - that's how I felt when my friend took me to my first hockey game. Immediately I was just like YUP this is awesome, I love it, more please. So I think Overtake has a lot of heart and a more upbeat feeling than MF Ghost.
I'll keep watching both because I'm interested in seeing where they're going, but I am a little 😬 about the treatment and portrayal of Ren.
Still, it's fun to have not one but TWO car racing anime in the same season!

When Worlds Collide - The Early Merger Era of USCR
I remember when I was in high school I would always try and get my school's "Car Club" up and going. I'd post flyers, give announcements over the PA and ask the teacher lending us the room for help with ideas. Unfortunately it was only ever me and one other classmate who would occupy the classroom at lunch, never really finding a single person to share my rather obsessive interest with.
There was this one other kid, a senior at the time, that would be at one of the computers in the class room looking at spotters guides of some sorts. At the time I was solely a NASCAR fan, not really paying much attention to other forms of motorsport. I knew Super GT existed thanks to Gran Turismo 5, and of course there was Formula 1 but I never feigned too much interest in it. So when I peeked at his screen I noticed that it was what known as the Tudor United Sports Car Championship at the time.
Of course, I didn't know what it actually was at that time. My small little NASCAR infested brain had never heard of this series before -- and that's because it was a completely new idea, birthed from years of two separate American sports car series competing for the same audience throughout the 00s and early 10s. The American Le Mans Series was much like the rest of the ACO sanctioned championships across the globe, using state of the art prototypes and factory GT efforts to fill their grids. However, by the end of the ALMS era there was a clear struggle to fill the prototype grids, with only a literal couple of P1 entrants running in any given race weekend.

The Grand-Am Road Racing Series was the complete opposite of the sleek and sexy cars ready to travel to France every June. Their top class were these tube frame "prototurtles", which in their first year looked more Florida man rather than Florida endurance classic. However, what they did have in their pocket was the iconic Daytona 24, which throughout its years would play host to multiple big time NASCAR superstars hopping in to turn right for the first time in a few good months. Their GT cars were also a bit non-orthodox for that matter too -- whereas you had Porsches and Corvettes battling it out for top honors literally shoulder checking each other Grand Am boasted Pontiac GXPs and Mazda6s... though, admittedly they were also tube frame based machines.
So when the merger news came about, obviously it was a pretty big shock to everyone's system. I mean, how the heck would these two completely different types of series fit in with one another given that Daytona Prototypes were literally pieces of metal put together to look somewhat like a race car in comparison to the prohibitively expensive prototypes that literally no one could afford to run these days... but maybe that's what sports car racing needed.
After years of having to recover from the sudden decline of the sport (thanks Bernie) everyone was kinda doing whatever the hell in their own corner, with the BPR scurrying off into their own corner trying to make their own flavor of sports car racing before getting blown up by some guys from Stuttgart that would create so much baggage for Stephane Ratel that he garnered a hate boner for factory teams, the ACO still hanging onto the Le Mans 24 with its ever changing prototype category that once literally got gamed by those same German assholes from Stuttgart a few years earlier, the guys in Japan having to make a completely new regulation after their prototype series just kinda died off which even led one team fielding a 962C against some Skylines... America just kind of had to go their own way.
And we all know the trope of the USA saving the world.

I mean, the mere sight of seeing these brute beasts with their loud and brash V8 motors running alongside these sleek and sexy prototypes is enough to get anyone the least bit interested just for the weird factor. The racing it gave wasn't too bad either.
The premise of these awkward Daytona Prototypes bumbling through the bumps of Sebring just like their European brethren is worth the price of admission itself. And we haven't even gotten to the rest of the field! You had the infamous Prototype Challenge category that would provide the race with its full course yellow quotas and almost down right dangerous levels of idiocy, but they're just honestly trying their best. Of course, there was also the ever iconic GTLM field with multiple factory GT teams duking it out going all touring car on each other battling for 2nd to last, while the GTD class derived from the Grand-AM GT category had its own oddities that would be simply wrong to look over. The 911 GT America is a car that seems to come out of someone's fever dream that I wouldn't be surprised if it came up in a /r/ThomasThePlankEngine post. There was also the R8 LMS with the teeny ass wing. I don't know why I remember that, but it's always so funny to see that specific car show up in Forza games when there's literally newer R8s to feature.

Even the calendar itself was a "greatest hits" of both series, with both sides having to play on each other's grounds with the Daytona 24 and the 12 hours of Sebring being the big crown jewel events. Of course, you also had the rest of the endurance races that both series managed to carry over, the 6 Hours of the Glen from the Grand-Am side and the Petit Le Mans over on ALMS' side. Long Beach and Belle Isle were two street courses that both series brought along that would prove to be marquee events, and something of an interesting tidbit that I would be remiss to mention would be the Prototype Challenge only race at Kansas Speedway. Yeah. That layout. You know the one.
The Daytona Prototype mix of cars lasted up until the end of 2016, which would bring the beginning of the new era of sports car racing. While I don't have great opinions on the DPi platform, it nevertheless influenced the current resurgence of the prototype category, whilst the growth of the global GT3 regulation made up by our good friend Stephane Ratel would occupy the GTD category and would go on to encompass the entire field, becoming one of the many influences that would make it replace the declining GTE class as the top global grand touring class in the world. Indeed, the United part of the United Sports Car Championship really did become reality -- though it probably had a far bigger outreach than they initially expected. Or maybe it was their intention from the get-go. Who knows.
