The Visionary Surrealist Work of Nancy Fouts
Nancy Fouts had a knack for creating art that is familiar and strange all at once.
Her surrealist creations combined objects together in impossible ways, and shared visual irony in such a simple yet meaningful manner.
Some of these designs have been explored by artists on Instagram, but Fouts was a trendsetter, and actually made the items come alive, through elegant sculpture work, versus just a…

1. Cite some artists you researched that may be points of inspiration for you.
Joseph Cornell
Untitled (Bébé Marie) early 1940s.
Use of a box opposed to canvas keeps the subject within the same rectangular confines but introduces depth. Insinuates metaphorically and literally that there is more than what meets the eye.
Nancy Fouts
“Modern day surrealist” best known for her playful use and manipulation of found objects. She was also concerned with the animation of said objects (bringing them to life), employing motorised mechanisms to achieve this.
Purse with teeth (2010)
Deals with themes of time, nature, and religious iconography, by playing on the notions associated with certain objects.
Robert Rauschenberg
Bed (1955)
Combines found materials with painting, using a quilt rather than canvas.
2. What is you narrative? Your hook? Your theme/preoccupation?
I want my work to tell the story of the day I lost touch with reality. With a decrease in my dose of meds, I began to see inanimate objects smile at me. They would show their faces and tell me their stories: how they were created and what kind of life they lived. Though this was only a delusion, some of it still rings true- objects can hold a lot of history and meaning, and a smile can act as an invitation into this past life.
3. How will you go about this?
I want combine inanimate objects with painting to illustrate my idea. I will take toys, clothes and accessories from op shops and paint their smiles onto them. As well as mouths, I want to write their stories and paint other features that I see fit (this part hasn't been completely resolved yet).
OR
I could paint the objects then give the works away; engaging with the cycle in the lives of the objects, adding another story, then sending them on their way.

Purse Teeth by Nancy Fouts
I enjoy how the purse creates a physical reaction when most people see it. I like the mischievious nature of the purse as it sort of tells you off for trying to spend your money as you will get bitten by the purse, it reminds me of the 'monster book of monsters' in Harry Potter that also bites, I love how Fouts has made a similar piece that can be applied to the real world. The piece creates discomfort as the person trying to use the purse will be grossed out by the teeth.
