(Not) Too Late - NaLu
Tumblr media
When Lucy yelped from the other side of the room, Natsu's world went fuzzy.
He couldn't even perceive the people he pushed past to run across the packed ballroom as quickly as possible. Everything flashed through his head at once - he wasn't sure what had happened, but visions of what had occurred the previous times he'd been too late plagued him.
In the time it took to shove past a group of people, Future Lucy had died again.
When he accidentally tripped over an extended chair leg and almost knocked someone over, his Lucy was once more laying limply in the corner of a stone room, blood pooling around her head.
Distantly, a glass crashed to the floor, as he shook an unresponsive Lucy while pleading for her to wake up.
This couldn't be happening again.
None of this was allowed to happen again.
So where in the hell was-
"Natsu!!"
Yanked from his too-real memories, the dragon slayer blinked his fuzzy vision away and focused on the overwhelming sight before him. Lucy.
It was Lucy, unharmed.
Lucy, completely fine.
Lucy, …concerned?
"Natsu, what the heck has gotten into you?" The blonde mage scolded, glancing behind him at the excessive disruption and upset he'd caused. But Natsu couldn't give a damn about them.
"You're okay," he croaked, taking a few deep, grounding breaths, the air smelling of alcohol, perfumes, and Lucy.
"Of course I'm okay, what even-" Her irritation dissolved entirely when she saw the foreign look of anxiety on his face. "Are… you okay?" The worry stitched in her brow distantly reminded him that she'd said she was certain she would have wrinkles on her forehead by the time she was twenty.
Natsu sighed in relief. "Yeah. I'm fine." His face lit up with the expression that came so easily to him, a broad and reassuring smile that most people hadn't been able to read through. Natsu had always sworn to wear his heart on his sleeve, but when it came to Lucy that idea felt so wrong. He needed to be the strong one, to comfort her when she cried, to encourage her wherever she went. His own negative emotions only got in the way - and besides, they felt terrible.
Maybe another time Lucy would have dismissed it, continued on with her night while worrying about her partner. But this situation was too strange, his outburst too profound to ignore. Lucy turned to go outside, gesturing for him to follow, and the action came naturally to him.
As he trailed behind her, however, he noticed how uneven her walk was. That was odd. Too odd. Before they'd even made it through the doors, Natsu stopped her with a hand on her shoulder. Lucy didn't turn around.
"What happened?" He asked, all hints of a smile gone.
"It's fine. I can barely feel it."
"Feel what?"
Lucy seemed exasperated at his demanding tone. "Natsu, really, I'm okay-"
"But what if you weren't?!" He snapped, desperation seeping into his voice. Lucy blinked up at him with owlish eyes, those beautiful brown eyes that made him feel so warm every time they landed on him.
It wasn't just her eyes on him now, though. A small crowd of people had taken notice of the situation, their prying eyes and (what they thought were subtle) whispers flooding through his senses. Natsu did not want an audience.
He scooped Lucy up into his arms before she could get away, marching them outside and around the corner, into the garden. Lucy seemed to be too shocked to insist on walking herself, until she noticed their seclusion.
With nothing more than a look, Natsu got the message to put her back down, albeit with great reluctance.
"Okay, what is going on with you? You've never spoken to me like that before Natsu. You can't push me away this time, you're my best friend and I'm worried about you." Her voice shook, and the telltale smell of salt hit his nose. No no no, please don't cry. He'd do anything to stop her from crying.
Natsu dropped his gaze, trying to burn a hole in the hedge bushes with nothing more than the intensity of his eyes. Unfortunately, even for dragons, that remained impossible. He'd still try though. Anything to avoid this situation.
So slowly yet all at once, Natsu felt Lucy's warmth envelop him. Lucy, at a loss for what to do when Natsu was being so nonverbal, wrapped her arms around him and buried her tears in his chest. If all else failed, she knew actions were one way to get through to him.
"Sorry, Lucy." Natsu finally spoke. Then it was his turn to be at a loss. What should he say? What could he do?
Thankfully, his brilliant partner had an idea. "I tripped on my heel and hurt my ankle," Lucy drew away from him and confessed, crystal droplets accumulating in her eyes. Always so emotional, he thought.
"Your turn," she urged quietly, looking up at him. "What's wrong?"
It all hit him at once. The ghostly memories of her death, her pain, her tears, all whirling around his mind in a terrifying tornado. Natsu shut his eyes, but he only saw the image of crimson blood stapled to the back of his eyelids.
Lucy's blood.
Natsu shook his head to chase away those images. That was all in the past, and he'd sworn to protect the future. But the past still haunted him, dragging him back, weighing him down. Igneel's disappearance, Lucy's tears, Igneel's death, Lucy's death-
"Natsu." Her voice snapped him back. It was soft, gentle, the same tone she used to comfort kids when they were on missions. In a way, he felt like one, reliving his past all while standing right here as an adult. He was grown up, damnit, he could move on.
The party was a faint buzz of white noise as he stared at the ground, lost for words. After the silence extended even further, he heard the soft noise of air shifting as Lucy sighed.
"Okay. I'm going back inside to work on the job. I… I'll shout if I need you, 'kay?" He could feel her eyes on him as she spoke, but he didn't move. He couldn't.
Once again, Lucy opened her mouth to say something, but it seemed she thought the better of it. Instead she turned around and made her way back to the crowded ballroom. There was nothing she could do if he refused to speak.
A few minutes later, after a deep breath, Natsu cleared his mind as best he could, finally heading back inside. He could only hope there would be a fight soon, because these emotions running rampant were really getting frustrating.

hello, again - a nalu fanfic
synopsis: lucy heartfilia recently moved back to her hometown after leaving for the big city 6 years prior. she then runs into familiar faces like natsu dragneel- her old best friend- in the worst way possible. now trying to rekindle their friendship, will it develop into something more than just best friends?
chapter 2: the past 857 words (short, ik, but i'm gonna start out short just to feel it out for now)
- last moments from chapter 1...
I put my money into the vending machine and pressed the button for my soda. It dropped loudly in the machine, and when I opened it, it sprayed all over my face! How hard was this shaken beforehand?!
"ARE YOU OKAY LUCY?!" Levy asked frantically, "Hold up, I'll-"
She was caught off by someone bursting out into a fit of laughter. I turned my head to see the person and was shocked. He was bent over holding his stomach from laughing hard, and even though his face wasn't showing, I could tell who it was just from the hair color.
"Natsu...?!"
He finally stopped laughing and looked up. His face went blank as he looked at me with his mouth open wide.
"Lucy...?"
-
Lucy pov
We both stared at each other for a few seconds before Levy broke the silence, "you two know each other?" He broke the borderline staring contest and adverted his eyes away from us. "Yeah, from when we were younger." He was looking away from us but I could still see the hurt in his eyes.
"Were you guys friends?" Levy asked.
"No," he answered. I held my breath as my heart sank down all the way to my feet. Did I hurt him that bad? "We were best friends."
"Ohh okay... interesting..."
We stood there in awkward silence for a few more seconds until Natsu walked off into the boy's bathroom and came back with a few paper towels. "You should probably take these." He held his hand out with the paper towels for me to take. He was adverting his eyes to the side so we couldn't make eye contact. "Thank you... you di-"
I was cut off by the loud sound of someone shouting Natsu's name. I look in the direction it came from and see none other than the infamous Gray Fullbuster. We only talked back then because he was also friends with Natsu. He started marching down the hallway, his raven hair slightly bouncing from the fast pace. "Did you take my-" he stopped and looked at me, "Lucy? What're you doing here? And why are you wet..?"
"I transferred here for my last year of high school. I decided it would be better in some place I actually feel at home at I guess." I replied.
"Yeah, and she likes getting sprayed in the face with sodas now." Natsu said in a snarky tone. I rolled my eyes, "Totally."
"Well, I look forward to doing that in the future but now I gotta steal Natsu from you guys real quick. Cya." Gray grabbed Natsu's wrist and dragged him down the hall into a room I'm assuming is their shared dorm.
I sighed and turned to face Levy, "I think it's about time we leave." She nodded in agreement and we walked back to our room in a comfortable silence.
Natsu pov
I walked was dragged into my room with Grays hand tightly holding my wrist, "Dude, will you let go?! That hurts!" I yelled.
"I was DOING you a favor dumbass. I saw Lucy and knew you didn't want to be there because of that look on your face. You should be thanking me!"
"What look on my face?"
"The same look you give when you actually have to do school work"
"You mean my sexy, smart-looking face?"
"NO? Your 'I don't want to do this' face. Plus, you don't have a 'sexy, smart-looking face. You're too stupid for that."
I sighed and patted his shoulder, "I'll just ignore that last part since you saved my ass right now, thanks."
"Yeah, no prob." He patted my shoulder back and went to go sit at his desk, and I went to go lay on my bed. "So... what's with you and Lucy? You never really told me what happened."
I sat up and looked down at my hands, "To be honest, I don't really know. It kinda just happened."
Natsu pov - 5 years prior
I stared down at my phone, looking at my messages with Lucy:

-
Lucy pov - present day
Levy had left to go see her boyfriend, who I’m assuming is the guy in the picture. It’s kind of scary thinking about it; she’s so petite, while he’s so large and buff.
I started unboxing all my stuff and putting them into their respective areas.
I purposefully didn’t open the smallest box till last- the box containing all my un-mailed letters to Natsu within the past 3 years. The letters I was too scared to mail, thinking he may hate me and wouldn’t want to see them, wouldn't want to think of me more. And then now I’m back here in Magnolia, taking a more tremendous step than sending out measly letters.
I picked up the box and fiddled with it for a second. Was I ready to let go of the past, and move on to the future? Would Natsu be able to do the same? I wanna be his friend again. No- best friend.
I looked at the trash bin next to my desk, and threw away the ugly past.

FAIRYTAIL HEADCANONS
By toast
-at this point there's a box at the guild acting like a lost and found for gray when he looses his clothes and cant find them
-i feel like Lucy would carry around those fire blankets to put out fires when natsu gets too reckless
-erza is probably the best person to go sweets shopping with because she's friends with almost every bakery owner in every town shes done a job in
-i feel like at some point since carriages are pulled by donkeys/horses n they walk a lil slow natsu would just walk along side the carriages when the journey is too long.that or he'd ride on the horse considering it's not a vehicle???????
-gajeel probably gives advice on piercings while fighting enemies
-laxus seems like the type to listen to bossmusic while he's lighting because it makes him feel more badass
-natsu probably gossips to Lucy unintentionally because of his dragon hearing
-" on that note, natsu probably mutters under his breath replies to convos he hears in the distance nobody else hears and people think he talks to himself
-i like the idea of gray chewing on his own ice
-elfmans sandals are probably deadgive aways on missions so he sucks at stealth and hiding(I mean considering his size I feel like hiding is already a far stretch
I don't know if any of these headcanons have already been said but I will say that I thought of these on the top of my head and if it is similar to anyone's I DID NOT COPY THEM Purely coincidence. Let me know if you want more!!!!

My first time posting anything ever and it's gotta be nalu
Tumblr media
"Lucy," he whispered, brow furrowed with some sort of feeling twisting his heart. It wasn't anger, but it wasn't really sadness either, and Natsu couldn't figure out what other emotions could feel this bad.
He had always hated her tears. Seeing the crystals falling from her soft eyes, in combination with the sniffles and sobs she'd occasionally let out was the worst possible thing he could witness, and he had vowed to make sure anybody who made Lucy cry would pay.
But… he couldn't do that here. As airheaded as Natsu was, he recognized that. Lucy was in the corner of her home, sitting against the wall and holding her knees to herself as the tears fell relentlessly. And for him, it was all too easy to figure out what exactly she was crying about.
He could just distract her, like every other time he'd found her distraught. Jokes and general cheer always brought her mood back up, and it was certainly less nerve-wracking than trying to offer emotional advice. Hell, Natsu barely knew what he was feeling at any point, and there was no way he could help someone else with the same.
That wouldn't work, though. Not this time.
As quietly as possible, Natsu approached his partner, kneeling down in front of her. In addition to being far too absorbed in her sorrow to look up and notice him, Lucy had her head buried in her hands as she weeped.
Natsu gingerly brushed a hand on her head, and the way she jolted and looked up made his heart shatter irreparably in his chest.
"Natsu…"
Truthfully, he had long since adored the way she said his name. He never thought that a name could sound nice until he heard the way Lucy called his out in the heat of battle, or how she excitedly greeted him with an exclamation, or even huffed it out in the most endearing form of annoyance he'd ever witnessed from a person.
Needless to say, he'd never get bored of her name either. Plenty of times he'd heard the name Lucy, seeing how common of a name it was, and yet the fact that it was hers made everything different. Lucky Lucy of Fairy Tail - that was her 'full' name in his head anyways. Because just as claimed in her past, Lucy was his good luck charm, and Lucy was, for lack of any words, simply the most Lucy she could be.
She meant the world to him, and that was that.
As soon as she'd recovered from the initial shock of being found like this, she let out another sob and threw herself into Natsu's chest, embracing him in a death hug that he fully reciprocated. Here in her arms, burying his face in her golden hair and drowning in her scent, Natsu knew he was done for. He'd never be able to give this up, he realized. He just hoped with all of his heart that she could ever feel the same.
"S'okay." He mumbled in assurance, though he wasn't sure why she was crying in the first place. Whatever it was, he vowed, he would fix it, be it a broken heart or a nerve touched by some guy - that warranted a good beating from one of the strongest mages in Fairy Tail. Anybody who dared badmouth Lucy soon saw the wrath of a dragon, akin to a glimpse of the afterlife.
As he was caught up in his thoughts of violence towards any who wronged her, Lucy was in fact crying about a whole different thing. The bad guys weren't out there, she'd long since learned never to take others' criticism to heart. It was the voice in her own head that hurt her the most, the one thing that Natsu couldn't beat up and move on from.
"What's up?" He asked in the gentlest voice he could muster, terrified of saying something wrong.
"I'm… not good enough."
What?
Apparently his face said it all, because she decided to explain herself, if only a little.
"I'm so useless to you guys! My spirits can only be as strong as I am, and after seeing their Eclipse forms… what if they feel trapped just because I'm so weak? Like they can't access their full power because of me?" Bleary-eyed, she shook against him helplessly, stuck in the realization of this tragedy.
Natsu thought it was the most bullshit thing he'd ever heard.
"What are you talking about? You're amazing."
She sighed. "No, Natsu, face it, I'm the weakest link. Our team would be so much better off without me, and we all know it. So why do we keep pretending like I belong?"
His head shook adamantly. "You aren't anything like that. You're what keeps us going, what holds us together. We'd never finish half the things we do if you weren't there to save our butts." He pulled back from their embrace to look into her eyes, with conviction rooted in his. "We're a team. And we'd be a team, magic or not. Nothing's ever gonna change that." Then, he simply dazzled her with that brilliant toothy white smile, dark eyes sparkling with happiness in a way that she'd only known Natsu to do. Everything about him was utterly unique, each expression, gesture, and sentence from him being incomparable to anything Lucy had seen. To her, he and his flames were like the sun- no, not like The Sun. Natsu was a new kind of sun, a different but incredibly welcome kind of warmth and light for everyone in Fairy Tail.
She only stared at him through all these contemplations, until she realized how strange it must have felt for him. What could she say? It wasn't like she could agree, but outright denying him felt wrong too. Why, these days, did it feel like they were constantly shifting on a glass floor, with each bad move threatening to send them crashing? Did it feel the same way for him?
"Lucy," he called softly, his grin fading into a soft smile that melted every bit of her. It was clear he was waiting for a response, something to let him know she was okay, but Lucy still didn't have anything she felt satisfied with giving. For being a writer and priding herself on her eloquence, she sure couldn't remember any words when she needed them the most.
It's not like Natsu was any good with words.
An idea struck her.
Her beloved partner was inspiring, encouraging, and uplifting in all the things he said - but ultimately, over their friendship, Lucy had learned that Natsu knew actions much better than words. When she was upset, he hugged her. When he was sad, he rarely ever spoke about it. When he was livid about some despicable act, he would fight his way to peace, despite how contradictory that was. When she had fallen ill and was unable to see the Sakura blossoms, Natsu uprooted the entire tree and sent it down the river just for her! Yes, Natsu showed everything through actions, so it made sense that an action would be what he best understood.
Now resolved, Lucy took a deep breath to calm her racing heart. It didn't work; her proximity to Natsu was going to keep her heart rate escalated indefinitely. Damn her charming teammate and his endearing smiles.
Leaning up a bit, Lucy was trembling as she carried out this action. Her heart sang as she pressed her lips to his cheek, almost giggling at the feeling of his absurd body temperature against them. The moment lasted a mere second before she drew back, opting to shut her eyes and bite her lip rather than face what she'd done.
Meanwhile, Natsu drew a blank.
He'd gotten kisses on the cheek before. He was well familiar with the custom of greeting close friends or family with this particular gesture of affection, so it wasn't really strange that Lucy had done it.
Wasn't it?
He'd never seen her do anything like this before - maybe with Michelle, a couple of times with Levy, but never quite like this. For one, those kisses were fleeting, barely a brush of contact. That was not what had just happened. Did she do this more than he initially thought? Had she done this to Erza, or Cana, or even Gray? Red hot jealousy shot through him at the thought of Lucy's lips touching Gray of all people - that didn't seem normal. He tried to imagine Erza kissing Gray on the cheek to see if it invoked a similar feeling, but all he found in that endeavor was disgust.
Happy was right, he realized.
Virgo was right.
The whole guild had been right.
He liked her.
He LIKED Lucy. More than normal, more than he'd ever liked anyone before, more than just a friend.
This revelation needed to be shared.
"I like you." He blurted unceremoniously, looking at his partner anxiously.
Lucy opened her eyes and furrowed her brow, what? "Well I know that, we're best friends, right?"
Natsu shook his head fervently. "No, I REALLY like you, Luce."
The blonde shrugged in his arms. "Right, we're partners, then. I like you too Natsu," she spoke nonchalantly, in a way that told Natsu she wasn't getting it.
"That's not what I-" The dragon slayer felt a frustrated growl bubbling in his throat as he stumbled over his words. Good lord, how he hated words. Why did everything have to have a double meaning? There had to be a simpler, more efficient way of communicating.
Lo and behold, there was one.
One that could break their friendship, if he went through with it. One inspired by her, in hopes that what he had felt really was a sign, and one that sounded more appealing with each fleeting thought. This was what people did when they liked someone they're close to, right?
Natsu absolutely hated the uncertainty coursing through him right now, and he decided the only way to tip that horrible feeling of bated anticipation was to dive headfirst into action. Almost literally.
He reached his hands up to rest on her face, almost laughing at how serious she tried to appear despite the way he squished her cheeks. Before she could even protest, Natsu ducked his head down and placed a clumsy kiss right on Lucy's soft lips.
"Lucy," he said once again, unable to meet her eyes as a shade of pink rivaling his hair covered his cheeks. His tone was… uncertain, in a way that Lucy had rarely ever heard before. "I like you."
Wait a minute, she wasn't concerned about his tone, he'd just KISSED her?! Natsu Dragneel, the most idiotic dragon slayer, the most hot-headed wizard in all of Fiore, the rowdiest member of Fairy Tail, and her best friend - it couldn't be. For months she'd disregarded her own feelings, out of pure anxiety and fear that was completely warranted. She was so sure he didn't have a clue what romance meant, much less how it felt.
"Th…" Lucy brought a hand up to brush against her lips, still replaying the memory of the way his felt. "That was… my first kiss."
What?!
Natsu recoiled instantly, eyes wide and flustered face now on its way to match Erza's hair. "Oh, crap! I'm- I'm sorry Lucy, I know how much that meant to ya I swear I didn't mean it- well I did, but- augh!" Frustration took over his voice as he grabbed a fistful of his own hair, as if to calm himself - or maybe yank a good sentence out of his head. Whatever the case, Lucy didn't pay much attention. That is, until he turned to leave. No, he couldn't leave!
"Wait!" Without thinking Lucy grabbed his hand, forcing him to turn back around and look at her. What the hell was her plan?! Of course, she didn't HAVE one! But had he?
Without allowing it much more thought, Lucy put her hands squarely on his shoulders and leaned up on her toes to kiss him. It was shy, it was hesitant, but it was everything she'd dreamed it to be and more. Natsu's lips were hot against hers, just like she thought they'd be, and he was rather stiff throughout the kiss. Then again, Lucy was sure she was the same way.
As she drew away, she looked up at Natsu, who still had his eyes closed as he attempted to recover.
"Luce," he rasped, toned arms wrapping around her firmly, burying his nose into the soft skin of her neck and inhaling deeply. She smelled divine, in that comforting way that managed to quell his motion sickness even the slightest bit. In the way that told him everything was going to be okay, because as long as he had Lucy by his side he could never allow himself to die. In the way she always had.
The blonde squeaked, alarmed. "Natsu!" She gasped, unsure of her partner's intentions until she felt him heave a content sigh. Oh, right. He said I smell good to him. Any other time, Lucy would have called him a creep and told him to knock it off. But now? Now she found it endearing, in a way. How strange.
Their future was uncertain, now. But for once, Lucy truly welcomed this uncertainty, as that very fog harbored a whole new land of possibility that she couldn't wait to explore; with none other than Natsu by her side.
