Una pequeña empresa española integrada por seis empleados ha creado las muletas más ligeras del mundo y ha sido elegida por ello como finalista al Premio a la Innovación que concede Naidex, la mayor feria europea de productos para la autonomía y la movilidad de personas con discapacidades y que se celebrará en marzo en Reino Unido, informa Europa Press.

Se trata de IndesMed, una compañía creada en 2011 por los ingenieros de Telecomunicaciones Rafael Vidal Rodríguez y Miguel Capiello, quienes detectaron a base de investigación y experiencia propia —Vidal sobrevivió al accidente de Spanair y tuvo una larga convalecencia— de que las muletas que se ven obligadas a llevar miles de personas cada día suelen ser pesadas, feas, incómodas y pueden causar complicaciones como tendinitis en las manos.

«Me di cuenta de que en general, en la ortopedia parece que vale todo, nadie cuida la estética ni la funcionalidad ni nada y además se vende todo a precio de oro. Yo buscaba algo más cómodo y que fuera estético, porque bastante tiene uno con tener una enfermedad o una lesión, como para que tener que cargar con un aparato que te recuerda todo el tiempo que estás mal», explica.

Comenzaron a trabajar en la idea de unas muletas que se pudiesen llevar «como un complemento» y resultasen cómodas y ligeras. En 2011 ya tenían el producto, las primeras muletas del mercado fabricadas en fibra de carbono, que según explica, «no se utilizaba entonces para la ortopedia, quizá porque se pensaba que era innecesario».

Vidal explica que las muletas tienen otra particularidad, pues no producen tendinitis ya que el diseño, que han patentado, se basó en un estudio médico sobre la posición de la mano para lograr «una postura neutra, en la que no se fuerce» y por tanto no se dañe. Se ofrecen además en colores vivos, como el naranja o el morado, lo que «influye mucho a nivel psicológico».

«Esto se convierte en un complemento igual que pueden ser unas gafas. Se trata de muletas que podrían pasar por bastones de esquí y que te quitan esa sensación de llevar un trasto porque tienes una discapacidad y estás fastidiado. Es un complemento estético y, lo más importante, lo utilizas sin que se te fastidien las muñecas», añade.

Las primeras se vendieron en el extranjero, donde creyeron que era una empresa alemana, algo que según afirma, siguen pensando hoy muchos de sus clientes, «como si no se hiciera buen diseño e innovación en España». En este sentido, lamenta la falta de apoyo y de reconocimiento dentro de las fronteras, pues no han contado con ningún tipo de ayuda institucional para el desarrollo de la iniciativa.

A partir del 27 de marzo, presentarán sus productos en Naidex, la mayor feria europea de productos para la autonomía personal de personas con discapacidades, en la ciudad británica de Birmingham. La organización ha seleccionado las muletas españolas como candidatas al Premio de Innovación, que reconoce «la idea más innovadora que haya abierto nuevos caminos se destaca de la competencia por factores como el diseño, la operatividad y la efectividad», según explica Naidex.

Vidal destaca que esta empresa de seis trabajadores, «la única española de la feria, competirá con gigantes del sector» como la compañía multinacional Ottobock, aunque en España, donde además de las muletas venden ya andadores y bastones fabricados en fibra de carbono y con el mismo concepto estético, se ignore.

«Los extranjeros son mucho mejores con el márketing, como la empresa que le puso las muletas al Rey emérito, aquellas que tenían luces. Sabemos, porque hemos visto fotografías de sus últimas apariciones públicas, que el Rey Emérito está ahora utilizando al menos dos de nuestros bastones así que lleva el bastón más ligero del mundo, que es de fibra de carbono y pesa sólo 100 gramos, con un letrero que dice ‘made in Spain’. Aunque no lo sepa todo el mundo», afirma.
