the one good thing about my bus home being delayed by five hours is that i had time to reread both Thief of Time and Hogfather, and they're still two of the all-time Discworld bangers

So obviously I always love the concept of an inhuman monster getting a humanity contact high and becoming torn about its previous wicked plans, but given that John's time with Arthur involved flailing around a bunch of haunted venues and almost getting murdered a lot, with a brief coma interlude, I'm not sure what sweetened him on humanity so much. Must've been some coma.

'Please call me Myria.' 'I don't think I-' 'Please?' said Lady LeJean meekly. A name is important.'

Chapters: 25/25
Fandom: Discworld - Terry Pratchett Rating: Teen And Up Audiences Warnings: Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings Characters: Myria Lejean, Susan Sto Helit, Gaspode (Discworld), Angua von Uberwald, Jonathon Knäcke, Jessica Knäcke, Carrot Ironfoundersson, Samuel Vimes, Auditors of Reality Additional Tags: Angst and Humor, Hurt/Comfort Summary:
Once upon a time, the Auditors committed the ultimate arrogance and created life. But the Auditor inside 'Lady Myria LeJean' soon discovered that the flesh shapes the mind as the mind controls the flesh, and learned why living is so hard to set aside.
This story takes place both during and after Terry Pratchett's novel Thief of Time. The first five chapters are an expansion on the secondary character of Myria LeJean with some retelling from her point of view of scenes that originally appeared in that novel. As such, this story will contain some spoilers if you have not yet read ToT.
I took my daughter to Scout camp and a Scout Master from another troop and I connected over books. He wrote this wonderful take on the mad auditor from Thief of Time.
Enjoy ☺️

Me: Ha ha I’m on break, I’ll have time to do requests!
Also me: *has to help my mom clean the house and cook for an Easter party*
Anyways I hope she looks alright! I like exclusively draw the same characters over and over again so thank you for forcing me to diversify.
Also I pulled some opacity lowering color stunts sorry not sorry

Thief of Time - WSP 26 -- Audio issues and Auditor issues won't stop Manning, Dani, and Liz from discussing the final Death book, Thief of Time!
@wyrdsisterspodcast does it again -- with, yes, a few audio issues, but as usual some interesting takes on a lovely Discworld novel. The “nobody’s neurotypical in Discworld” is strong in this one.

Thief of Time is one of my favorite Discworld novels, but Jeremy Clockson and Myria LeJean are a better 'ship than Lobsang Ludd and Susan Sto Helit, and that is a fact.
If I had my druthers the book would have ended a tick differently...

I finished my reread of Thief of Time. Of course I loved it, but theres part of the ending I find... weak and dissapointing. Spoilers after cut
I liked Myria Lejean/Unity. I liked that she was exploring how to be human, and seemed to be genuinely trying. I liked how Susan warmed up to her, and stopped referring to her as an it. I loved how Unity had enough of a personality to get picked up by Death, and a chance to see what comes next.
but the “I want to die” bit kinda took me offguard, especially with the reason “I am horribly insane”. What does that even mean. I just did a word definition daisy chain back to “Psychosis”, which is admittedly a bad take, but its also a bit of twisting meaning.
I believe two things. 1. this was just a way of tying up loose ends. 2. I think pterry had a bad opinion of psychiatrists. If this had been written later, with our culture having less open stigmatism of mental illnesses, then this would’ve been handled differently.
I think, personally, that a cooler ending would be to have Deaths assistant, (name begins with A?), help slowly rehabilitate her in Deaths garden, as he has already helped a non-human(Death) adopt human ideas and habbits. A space to heal from the truama/PTSD/guilt, to slowly get used to senses (deaths monochrome world seems like a great place for those who suffer overstimulation).
And then Susan could have another supernatural friend. :(

So what, in your opinion, is The Most Underrated Discworld
Probably either Equal Rites or Thief of Time
Equal Rites gets a lot of flack for things that aren't really its fault - it's the first Discworld book that isn't about Rincewind and it's very clear Pratchett isn't completely comfortable with that idea yet, the most interesting character is a side character that later span off into her own series, and because it was published in 1987 there are a few jokes that haven't aged well. But honestly I still really like the messages in it, Esk is a really great character and it's refreshing to have a glass ceiling style story whose protagonist doesn't fit the 'Not Like Other Girls' formula.
As for Thief of Time... idk, I just think it's neat. I don't think it has any great messages in it, which is probably why it's less regarded considering the last Death book was the Hogfather, which had messages up the wazoo. But... there are moments in Thief of Time, like the Auditor traps and the Abbot who's a centuries old man in the body of a toddler so he keeps interrupting his wise speeches with 'Wanna Bikkit', and War living in a classic 50s sitcom with a Valkyrie, and the entire story of Myria Lejean, and the Auditors exploding when they eat chocolate, bits and pieces of that book that are etched into my brain ever since I first read it.
Also it's about 100,000 pages of Terry explaining away every continuity discrepancy he made before and after this book with the explanation 'Time literally exploded twice and what are basically Jedi had to desperately patch it together again despite not knowing what bit goes where' and I can respect that kind of commitment to batshit explanations.
