Okay, so going by the words counts on fics published this year—though there’s one i was working on for longer, and though there are wips i’m ignoring, because that would make this annoyingly complicated—61663 words. Which is a lot. Go me!

“who’s looking at you, kid?” I hadn’t even started s5 at that point, I was just feeling really weird and messed up about the ben stuff, and i couldn’t find anyone else’s fics about it, so i ended up writing that in like… a couple hours? honestly, writing or publishing fic for something before i’ve familiarized myself with the whole source material (with the LARGE exception of comics) is really not my style, but i just kind of said screw it about that one

Hm… i definitely think that the sequels to the jenny-in-hudson and the dair-as-single-parents fics go in this category—i really just haven’t gotten around to or had the inspiration for the jenny-in-london fic, and the dair-as-single-parents sequel has been shelved if not permanently, then for a good while, just because of some irl stuff.
(Very much in the cards, but technically fitting in this category is the second half of the gay thoughts series)
I also did kind of want to write dairena getting together as a “dair are together and enter serena” situation, which is my usual hc for them, and i do wish i’d written more blairena. And i wanted to do some post-series stuff for nate and for serena about them getting much more genuine happy endings, but i really couldn’t find the words to explain it

I know you’ve mentioned before that you don’t like Nate getting into politics, and I totally agree with you! I even remember watching the finale when I was 12 and finding out that he was running for mayor and I was like, that’s not right...
But I literally have no idea what I would want him to do??? Like, at all???? So, I was wondering if you had any thoughts on that, cause your gg opinions are literally always on point.
I also to this day can’t decide what I think about the Spectator arc. I mean, journalism def feels better than politics, but that whole thing was also started with William and Diana thing, which was... yikes. But in the end he DID break away from them, and I feel like that piece he wrote after William tried to use the Spectator to further Tripp’s career was a real high point for his character. Can you see may dilemma here? What do you think?
Idk, Nate’s just my favourite character (out of the mains who stick around through the whole show), and I very much relate to him on like a neurodivergent level... I just need to replace canon with something better in my head.
hi, sorry about taking a while to come to this! i've been kind of unwell, RIP, and wanted to answer when my brain was like, more present & all that. nate being mayor sucks, because it has such a vibe of him giving up what he wants for whatever his family wants from him ("darthmouth, law school, blair, that was the plan nathaniel," etc etc).
i also don't like the spectator arc for nate at all? like it was so opposed to what nate was actually passionate about, it just didn't make any sense. if he really wanted to break free from his family and do something for himself, why would he choose journalism? from whatever we've seen of nate in the show, i think it's safe to say that'd actually be a really unfulfilling career path for him. he could've chosen to break free from his family by getting a job that's more aligned with things he likes, or at least, things he doesn't vehemently dislike. imagine how much fun it would've been if he'd decided to try his hand at becoming a professional chef! or something new and unexplored, for him, like that.
& your point re: the spectator arc/nate's family.. while i get what you're saying about him trying to break away, it didn't feel like that to me, tbh. it felt so much like he wanted a fresh start, but his grandfather did everything he could to control nate & get nate where he wanted him to be, if that makes sense. and yes, in the situation nate tried to make the best of things, but to me it feels tragic as fuck. and kind of horrible - the sense that no matter what nate tries to do, no matter how far away he tries to get from his family, they're right there, breathing down his neck. they just won't let him be his own person. it makes me wonder what happened to nate during those 5 years of fast-forwarding before the derena wedding & finale... did he try and escape his family more times before realising there was no way he could get out of their grasp, and is that why he succumbed to running for mayor? dammit, i'm sad now.
anyway! i skipped the first question so that i could come to it last, and i've put it under the cut here. so... potential careers for nate that i actually really like, under the cut, here you go:
i like the idea of him being a physical education teacher in high school, like, a lot. i think he'd be really good at it, and unlike some of the absolute garbage instructors i've seen, he would like... be mindful & considerate of kids' feelings and not comment on their bodies or fitness levels in disrespectful ways? you know what i mean.
he could also become a professional athlete? dude was the captain of three different sports teams in high school, come on natie, join a sports team as an adult for REALZ
horseboy!nate is very close to my heart so. i love to think of him doing some job that involves that. riding instructor who works in the stables? racehorse trainer? i don't know, i'm very much not a horseboy. but. yeah.
kindergarten teacher natie!!!! this one is really beloved to me. i am gonna write milofic with date endgame about it someday... milo's in kindergarten, nate's his teacher, dan's the hot single dad, you see where this is headed....
i like the idea of nate running vlogs, like "how to" vlogs, for people who are new to adulting, or whatever? i think he'd find it satisfying AND he'd be good at it. stuff like "how to cook if you're living alone," "how to file your own taxes," "how to assemble furniture from ikea" (bonus video: "how not to assemble furniture from ikea"), & i think he'd have a really good brand of like. humour & sincerity? like he would have "how to cook" videos but he would also have "i burnt breakfast again" kind of videos. idk, i just like natie being able to leave the sheltered bubble that is the van der bilt hivemind & do his own thing - and find joy doing his own thing! and share that joy!!
in that line - an arc i LOVE for nate is nate deliberately working jobs like customer service/retail & all that just so that he gets that experience and learns what that is like. cashier natie my beloved... i'm actually writing that one into a fic, lol. but just stuff like that.

okay, this one is a favourite: tour guide nate!!! like, one of those guides who escorts a group of tourists around a city and tells them about the history and monuments and shows them the sights. i mean, he canonically did do this with raina, but of course, as a tour guide, there'd be... less romance in his job, LOL.
im suddenly thinking of nate being a cab driver and i'm really into it, idk what to tell you.
mechanic nate! but mostly just for the potential datefic. dan's car breaks down and nate's there to fix it and dan can't stop staring at nate's arms, good lord,,
jokes aside, there's something really good about nate specialising in repairs of some sort. any sort! hardware repair, clock fixing, plumbing.... it doesn't matter whatever it is, i love the idea of nate making broken objects better.
nate would be really good at being an actor or a model i feel, but i think those jobs would make him miserable, so unless we're looking at angsty/whumpy fic premises for him, that's not what i wanna see him doing
i know that both S & liz have mentioned social worker nate at some point, and while i personally don't really see it, i do think he has the right skillset for it & that it's a cool headcanon!
someone - i don't remember whom, i think it was leila but i could be totally mistaken - said something about nate being one of those counsellors who work in school & yeah, he's definitely got the right skillset for that.

Oh there is no doubt in my mind that they named that baby Jack after Wade's mother, I refuse to accept anything else lol. And of course I do lol!
I put this in my fic, but George and AB accidentally have four kids in very quick succession, three boys and a girl, Will, Henry, Simon, and Jane (Jane for Jane Austen, the boys' names because they are both British in origin - let's not forget AB is a canon anglophile! - and basic enough for George lol)
Also I said this before, but Jane grows up to be a lesbian firefighter like Jaysene lmaooo
Lemon and Lavon have two kids, a boy and a girl, the girl named after a flower of course
I go back and forth on whether or not Zoe and Wade ever have more kids tbh, so I don't have a definitive headcanon on that but I do really love the idea of Zoe, Wade, and Jack being this tight cute little family trio living in the carriage house forever lol
And I sent those to you already, but I am obsessed with the headcanons another blog came up with about Wade having a feminine son and Lemon having a butch daughter, and them helping the other deal with that, it's just *chef's kiss* I love to think of the characters still being challenged post canon
I don't think Crickett and Jaysense would have kids tbh (Crickett was married to Stanley for 10 years, if she really wanted kids she probably already would've had them) but you just know that they are the favorite aunties of all those kids cause they spoil them rotten lol
(Also let's not forget that Tom and Wanda's baby is only a couple months older than Jack - Wade and Tom are TOTALLY dad friends lol and one year Zoe and Wanda compete to the death to be room mom rip)
The kids all grow up really close in age - Jack, the oldest, and Jane, the youngest are only 8 years apart with the rest of the kids somewhere in the middle there (I think with previous headcanons I have Lemon & Lavon's first kid being born about two years after Jack, and then AB & George's first kid being born about 6 months after that kid lol)
But anyway so lots of family brunches and events and holidays spent together as well as one awful group vacay lol. Pictures before school dances, picking each other's kids up from school, Jack and Lemon & Lavon's kids basically growing up in the same house together...yeah. It's about the found family!
On the one hand, they would be practically raised like sisters, but on the other...imagine Lemon & AB's daughters dating...Blairena energy (okay wait also Derena energy tho rip)

But to get into the GG of it all specifically...I’ve finally started reading sudsnewsletter’s analyses in full (like, I read your post digests but now I’m reading the whole things and OMG they’re so good), and anyway, she makes this point in her Jenny essay, about GG falling into and perpetuating the fixation on sexual purity that was so prevalent in the 00s. Maybe it still is? Idk I’m not a teenager anymore (thank fuck), and I don’t really pay attention (thank fuck) (1/6)
I mean, one of the most definitive pieces of media from the era was created by a Mormon housewife who wrote 3 novels full of repressed judgement before marrying off her 18-yr-old heroine so that she could finally have sex! Gossip Girl really is such a time capsule of a show, in so many respects, and especially how it acted surrounding all of this. So, taking what I know about living through the 00’s, and what I know about GG, and Chrisinda’s absolutely god tier analysis…(2/6)
I think the fixation on sexual purity has a lot to do with how the GG writers/production behaved in regards to its cast members’ relationships, almost as if the real-life relationships gave more validity to the relationships that appear onscreen? Like, it’s okay to yank Serena & Dan around by the collar in their relationships, because look! And, in the case where the relationship came first, it’s almost the inverse, like GG was giving its benevolent blessing which is just *shudders* (3/6)
It’s like they had to keep the story and the behind-the-scenes parallel to create an appearance of monogamy? If that makes sense? Like, all the promiscuity and scandal on the show is justified or absolved if they brought it back to this, to the beginning, which ties into Dan being fated for Serena and Blair being fated for chip, bc hey, that’s who they made their debut with. Which, the show's fiction on virginity just makes me want to punch a wall. (4/6)
And of course, we can’t separate this from the fact that it’s really only the sexual purity of the women characters that GG is interested in perpetuating, or preserving, or punishing for the loss of it. Lively I think is the one you quote most, and for Serena, they seemed to do all three. Gossip Girl is not a documentary, nor an instructional text, it’s fiction, and that’s all it should be.(5/6)
This compulsion though, that the story that plays out on the screen also has to play out in reality is a juvenile one, and the fact that the production team of people in their 30s and 40s pushed this to hold the interest of their teen audience who didn’t know better onto their cast of 20-something emerging artists who didn’t have the power to demand better, is pretty gross. And letting this PR fixation lead the story rather than the characters…*whispers*~it’s bad writing~ (6/6)

And yeah! Very interesting to tie the purity culture present in the show to the BTS relationships, I never thought of it that way, but that's certainly an interesting perspective. And yes, re: derena and chair, I definitely think that was the narrative, particularly with chair, although even when Dan is single and sleeping around in season 6, one could argue that the show is judging him for that/connecting it to him being morally bankrupt now.
And yeah, the reason I keep quoting Blake is because she is by far the most willing to be interviewed in that Vanity Fair article, and I do wonder if it's because at that time of that article (2017) she was the one who had most broken away from her character, and therefore she didn't have to worry about still being overly connected to Gossip Girl like the rest of them.
Like it must be so frustrating for the cast (now all in their mid-30s) to never put behind these roles you got when you were 20. People referring to Joe Goldberg as Dan Humphrey gone off the deep end, Chace being on SNL and still being identified as being from Gossip Girl instead of the show he's currently on (and yeah it was a joke, but the best jokes are always based in truth as they say), when Ed made his tiktok (which...don't even get me started on the gross fan reaction to a man who has been accused of SA by multiple women in real life) and everybody was commenting "Where's Leighton? She needs to duet!"....
And I know that's just part of the game of being on a popular show, especially a popular teen drama, this phenomenon is not unique to Gossip Girl. And I know people take this attitude of "how dare [x] actor be ungrateful for the role that launched their career!" and yeah I get that, but also it can't feel good to be pigeon-holed like that for the rest of your life either and that's certainly something worth thinking about from the actor's perspective. Idk.
But anyway, re: your last point, there is no reason they had to run their show the way they did. There are hundreds of successful TV shows that did just fine without capitalizing off the stars' personal lives (and even when the stars' personal lives became just as big as the show, i.e. Friends, the push came from the media, not the show's producers themselves?? Like wtf. Can you imagine if your boss (cause that's what a showrunner is, your boss) was exploiting your personal life like that? That's what we're talking about here). Gossip Girl didn't have to be like that. That was a choice made by the show's producers, and a very toxic one at that.

Despite the frequent late shifts, Wade's still the morning person of the two. Rufly + travel
They had traveled half of Europe together before even going on their first official date.
