Good Enough.....

Last month, my husband and I set out on what may be the journey of our lifetime. I’ve always been envious of those people who had RVs and could go wherever they wanted. The idea of loading up what you need to be comfortable and hitting the open road has been a dream of mine as long as I can remember. When we purchased our travel trailer and secured Arvin’s travel job, I was overwhelmed with excitement. We were doing it, living out this dream and best of all, the dogs were able to come along. I imagined us sitting by the fire having the time of our lives without a care in the world.

That excitement quickly turned to frustration. When starting a journey, such as this, no one tells you how complicated and stressful it can be. From learning how to maneuver the trailer in tight spaces to coming “home” to water rushing out underneath your moveable home. In hindsight, a little more research and practice would have been beneficial to lowering our stress levels. After nearly being in tears about how in over our heads we are, we have come up with a motto. That motto is “good enough.” Once we adopted this way of thinking, our happiness level has been on the rise. Trailer not parked straight, “oh well, good enough.” Can’t find a proper place to put all of our stuff, “oh well, good enough.”

This new outlook on life has saved us countless headaches. I’m not saying that we don’t still strive to do our best, but we aren’t trying to be perfect. I feel that most people run themselves down by trying to have everything perfect. That isn’t what life is about, life is about experiences. You have to take the good with the bad, the happy with the sad. If you strive for perfection, you will miss out on the beauty that is life. For example, today I took our three big dogs for a walk. They were running around which resulted in all of us being in a tangled mess. I quickly got frustrated and thought, “I hate this!” After minutes of anger and tears, I looked up and you know what a saw? The sun broke through the clouds and was shining brightly on the fall leaves of the mountain trees. The anger immediately left my mind and a smile was put on my face. I was so caught up in the idea of what our walks should look like, I forgot to be thankful that I am here with the dogs.

I let my frustration turn in to anger and pushed away the happiness this moment was presenting to me. I’ve been doing this well before this trip started, but not anymore. I’m going to be grateful for all the tangled messes, late night walks, broken water valves, and tight spaces. These moments aren’t meant to make me upset; they are to make me appreciate everything I have been blessed with. When things get tough, look for the blessing behind it. Take it in, laugh it off, and move on. If you are actively pursuing happiness, that will always be good enough!

I should not have taken a nap at 5pm on a Sunday so now I’m awake past 4am...& have to be up in a few hours. But here’s a cute pic of our furry children from earlier this evening.
