Within the Field of music technology, what has my interest is the skills and techniques that many experienced or even non-experienced performers, composers, sound engineers, DJs, or record producers have to manipulate sounds into the songs they hear in their heads. Many believe that music is simple to make, simple to understand and that everyone can do it…well they are wrong to an extent. On the surface level, I agree that anyone can make music, especially with the resources we have online in this day in age such as YouTube, SoundCloud, and many more but after you write that song to a beat you found on YouTube or wherever, what is your next step? Surely you won’t make it far by posting your music like that and I’m sure that you hear things that you want to fix or tweak but you don’t know how to go about it because you can’t install auto-tune to your natural voice God gave you. The point I’m trying to make is that those who know similar or the exact techniques and skills even a speck of it can take their music/craft to new heights with a unique sound that could be considered timeless, inspiring, impactful, or flat-out just extraordinary. These skills and techniques vary as well: things like reverb, delay, doubler, how to properly use an EQ, and many others. As I mentioned above some of these basic skills or techniques can take your music to new heights or make your time making music a struggle you never knew existed, for example, if your track sounds muddy, nasally, and dry, how would you tackle this obstacle? Yes, you could go to YouTube and look for “tutorials” but the information could be so vague or confusing that you might not want to even keep going. But within the field of music technology you get to learn about those same issues and get to develop not only a solution but a new found understanding of that skill or technique that is needed(in shorter words you learn how to use those tools and create a stable foundation that many new music creators lack).

serum's delay was just gaslighting me and being slightly slower for no reason. how is that even possible. it's bpm synced at left 1/8 right 1/4 and yet the delay is playing each slightly faster which tricks your mind into thinking the next chord is slightly late so i've sped up the delays to 1.012x normal speed and they're finally on beat close enough that a 2 bar delay feedback doesn't make the next chord sound horribly out of time despite EVERYTHING BEING GRID ALIGNED!

Why can't I write music in html?
I shouldn't have to make a video, record sound, or faff with images to write a simple internet message about western music, which has a widely-used standard notation system, and make it accessible.
I feel like I should be able to type something like this:
<western music notation>    <staff-group type="grand staff">       <staff>          <clef type="G" position="2"/>          <key flats="1"/>          <time quantity="4" value="4"/> 8. 8d4 [8f48a4] [8b48a4] [8f48d4] | 8. 8d4 [8f48a4] [8b48a4] [8f48d4] | 1(d4f4a4)       </staff>       <staff>       <clef type="F" position="4"/>       <key flats="1"/>       <time quantity="4" value="4"/> 4d3 [8e38f3] 4d3 [8e38f3] | 4d3 [8e38f3] 4d3 [8e38f3] | 1(d3a3f3)       </staff>   </staff group> </western music notation>
and my browser should be able to parse that and display it like this:
Tumblr media
It seems to me that Musescore, which I use, and all other notation software, must be already doing something very like this, under the hood. So we should have it in the browser.
I know there will be lots of difficulties as soon as it gets more complex, but a lot of music is just not all that complicated, and a lot of the things we want to say about it are really simple. Multiple voices could work like an ordered list. Tuplets could be handled, I'm sure: I've only been thinking about this for a couple of hours and I've come up with the above, using symbols that are on everyone's keyboard.
Even just that, with no sound, would make writing about music 1. much easier to do and 2. much easier to use because you'd be able to adjust the size and colour and whatnot, and assistive technologies that the blind and hard of hearing use would probably be able to parse it easily into different forms without losing the important information.
The next step beyond the minimum viable product would be to have some common basic downloadable sound fonts so that the browser could sing you the music on command. This would be step 2, making the idea being communicated more accessible to people who don't already read it, without the need to make videos.
So you'd have some property in each staff like "sound-family=bowed". I think we'd probably want a minimum of seven font classes, not representing specific instruments but classes of sound: pitched percussion (probably just piano), bowed strings, plucked strings, reed, flute-recorder-family, voice, unpitched percussion. With sensible fallbacks and defaults, that would be enough for a LOT of communicating ideas about western music. You could have fancy fonts as well, but a handful of basics would take you a long way. This part is already solved by the MIDI standard: it's just that we don't have a sensible way of using MIDI in the browser for communication between humans.
I don't know why this doesn't exist yet. I'm sure I could write up some decent use cases in JIRA or something for a first pass, if anyone is interested in building an XML standard and/or a browser extension.

DYLAN - THE GREATEST THINGS I'LL NEVER LEARN TOUR
15.02.2022 @ O2 Institute, Birmingham (2000 Capacity)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Written Feb 2023
This was my first concert of 2023. We were up on the balcony, so we were able to see the entire stage, and it's set up.
Having seen her a little under a year earlier, I knew what to expect - not only for the concert style but for some of the songs that were previously unreleased at that point. Dylan has slowly become my new favourite artist with her pop lyrics so explicitly influenced by old school rock. Having toured with the likes of Tate McRae, Bastille & Ed Sheeran since last year, she and her band have grown so much, and it's been fun to watch. It's crazy to think that only 360 days before this concert, I saw her perform at a venue with a capacity of 250 and now, at one with a capacity, exactly 8 times that.
Her mixtape 'The Greatest Thing I'll Never Learn' was among my top 10 of 2022, even though it was only released in October, so it was exciting to hear some of my favourite songs live for the first time in person such as 'blisters' and 'lovestruck'. I particularly enjoyed her cover of Harry Styles' 'Kiwi', which she and other precious concert attendees managed to keep a secret from everyone so no one was expecting it. Additionally, one song I was looking forward to, one that everyone expected to hear, was a song of hers that came on 24.02.2023 alongside an extended version of the mixtape called 'Every heart but mine' which I had already heard in 2022 at the other show and it had become not just one of my favourites l, but her whole fanbase's meaning that it was highly anticipated within her community. Moreover, in its recorded studio version she gathered a group of pop musicians composed of Cat Burns, Rachel Chinouriri, Mae Muller, Sody & Beren Olivia to provide many backing vocals and compose a choir in the background of the song.
Overall, this has been my favourite concert to date, even though we weren't in general admission. I loved every second of it and can't wait to see Dylan grow even more as an artist and as a person.
