First-grade field trip to the public library today yielded this mind-boggling photograph of "sidewalk surfing" in the mid-twentieth century. The car looks like a 1961 Chevrolet Bel Aire in good condition, which possibly dates the action to circa '61-'62. All skaters are riding DIY boards made with roller skate trucks and wheels, but the differences are quite notable; some of the boys are riding little more than 2x4s, while the kid in the white sweater is riding a thin shaped deck that looks like the current "No Games" model now available from the Heated Wheel. A young girl is holding her hands to her face, either in surprise at the thin ghost board rolling past her unattended on the rear wheels only (shot out by the kid with glasses over her shoulder?), or in shock at the mongo pushing occurring in the background. Some stylish footwork is in evidence as the tallest skater makes eye contact with the camera. All observed by the bicycle crew curbside. Neighborhood looks like Brooklyn or Queens, New York.
