We just finished revising our resistive 3.5" TFT FeatherWing (https://www.adafruit.com/product/3651) - it's been out of stock due to part shortages and needed a complete redesign, and then found this ancient box of 3.5" capacitive touch screens (https://www.adafruit.com/product/5846)…so with a bit of razzle-dazzle-CAD-o-matic we put together a 3.5" TFT Wing with capacitive touch support! This screen is nice in that it has true multi-touch capabilities. The 3.5" 320x480 capacitive touch FeatherWing will make an excellent Wing display that only needs SPI + I2C to interface. We only need to push down the bottom edge so that it can 'clear' the FT5336, which is on the FPC.

A Breath of Fresh Air

It was 2007, and I was nine years into my career as an interaction designer. Most of my work was for browser-based applications to be used on desktops or laptops. We had decided that we no longer had to consider 640x480 displays, and we were still laying out screens with HTML tables. I was really good at it.

Then the iPhone was announced. Pretty soon, designers were speaking a whole new language of touch targets, pinch-to-zoom, momentum scrolling, and pull to refresh. We talked about multi-touch, long presses, swipes, and taps instead of clicks. We thought more about screen orientation, and pixel density tied our brains in knots. It was like a breath of fresh air. There was so much more to learn and think about than there had been, and we developed a new lexicon to discuss it. We had new tools, methods, and approaches. We started thinking “mobile first”.

I’ve been watching some of Apple’s videos from WWDC on spatial design. I’m finding them to be rather exciting. I’m having little “aha” moments. I literally gasped when they showed a modal window that pushed the window it appeared over backwards in space so that the modal would be at the same focal point the window had been, accommodating the user, rather than forcing them to refocus. The use of depth goes way beyond drop shadows. They point out that rounded shapes focus the eye towards the center, whereas pointed shapes draw the eyes to the edges, and for a UI that determines selection by gaze, this is important for accuracy. I’m geeking out over this stuff.
